Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the reserves of columbium (niobium) minerals in Arkansas and to develop metallurgical methods for concentrating the minerals and extracting the metal. The columbium resources of central Arkansas were explored by drilling and trenching, and a number of samples were taken. On the basis of this exploration the known reserves of the metal were estimated to be over 78,000,000 pounds. The reserves could possibly be extended by additional exploration to 150,000,000 pounds.

"The mechanism of vanadium(V) V ) toxicity is still not fully understood in spite of extensive current effort (1-3). The presence of a vanadium(V) V ) -dependent NAD ( P )H oxidase in cell membranes suggests that at least one of the pathways involves oxidation of NAD(P)H (1-3). Considerable effort has therefore been devoted to finding the mechanism of NAD ( P ) H-oxidation by va¬nadium( V ) (1-19). Recently Liochev and Fridovich (4, 16) provided a critical review of vanadium( V) -stimulated NAD (P )H oxidation by plasma membranes. They out¬lined a mechanism in which vanadium(V) V )-stimulated oxidation of NAD ( P )H by biomembranes involves an O2 - initiated free radical chain reaction (4 ). While the above may be the major pathway for the vanadium-me¬diated NAD (P )H oxidation in membrane-related sys¬tems, some recent results suggest that in the presence of NADPH the flavoenzyme glutathione reductase can function as a vanadium(V) V ) reductase (18). Because of the significance of this result in relationship to the mech¬anism of vanadium( V) metabolism and the novelty of the metal-reductase behavior of a flavoenzyme, we have car¬ried out additional studies on one-electron reduction of vanadium( V) by two other, related flavoenzymes: lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADPH oxidoreductase. These two enzymes were selected because they are known to catalyze a one-electron reduction of Cr ( VI ) (19-21 ), which is isoelectronic with vanadium( V ).The present study also reports on the generation of hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals in the vanadium( V) -flavoen-zyme redox system without exogenous H2O2. The • OH study was undertaken because • OH radicals are known to be generated in reactions of vanadium( IV) with H2O2 (17,18,22-27). For example, Piette and co-workers (17, 22) have studied effects of vanadium(IV) IV ) on lipid per-oxidation and NADPH oxidation and suggested that va-nadium( IV) -induced • OH radical formation may play an important role in vanadium( V) toxicity. Carmichael (25, 26) investigated the reaction between a RNA /VO 2' complex and H2O2 with a view to probe the possible re-lationship between vanadium( IV) -mediated • OH radical generation and DNA damage. He has suggested that in this reaction the • OH radical adds to the C (5) carbon of uracil, causing nucleotide damage, similar to what occurs in the nucleotide /Fe2+ / H2O2 reaction (28) and in y-irradiated aqueous solutions of nucleic acids (29 ). To our knowledge, however, there is as yet no report on ·OH radical generation in any reaction involving the reduction of vanadium ( V) by a well-characterized enzyme, without exogenous H20 2 • The present study provides evidence that ·OH radicals can form in a flavoenzyme-mediated reduction of vanadium( V) to vanadium( IV) and that this process involves also the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The H20 2 thus generated reacts with vanadium( IV) to produce ·OH radical, in analogy with the Fenton reaction ( Fe2 + + H20 2 - Fe3 + + OH- + ·OH)."

This report describes a weighted method for evaluating the mean and variance of assay data from samples of different length . The method , which produces unbiased estimates from which valid confidence limits can be computed , is appropriate for bedded deposits of variable bed thickness and for vein deposits of variable vein width . Assay data from the bedded Florida phosphate deposit is used to illustrate the procedure .

This paper describes a method and a computer program for calculating shape factors and areas of channels that turn more than 90° and conduct fluids into the backs of wells. The program represents an improvement over a previous Bureau of Mines investigation by using a 4-point Lagrange interpolation equation instead of a 3-point and by summing areas of trapezoids with either x altitudes or y altitudes. Some of the techniques reported in this paper can also be used to compute the areas between contours and the lengths of lines that turn more than 90°.

During the testing of porcelain insulators with a " 60 - cycle flash - over apparatus " , gases are liberated having an odor greatly resembling that of ozone . Since the two main constituents of normal air are nitrogen and oxygen , and high voltages (approximately 90,000 volts ) are used during the tests , the conditions are favorable for the production of ozone or oxides of nitrogen , and perhaps both simultaneously . The presence of these gases is only noticeable during the testing period . They soon disappear after the test is over . No fatalities have ever resulted from these gases at the plant visited nor are there any records of any of the men who worked on the tests being confined to their homes from this cause . New employees sometimes complain of a depressed feeling and shortness of breath , which is most noticeable after leaving work and getting into fresh air , but they som become accustomed to it and no ill effects are noticed . In view of previous work*** which the Bureau of Mines has done on oxides of nitrogen in connection with mine gases and problems in gas analysis , tests were made at the plant of the Westinghouse High Voltage Insulator Company at Derry , Pa . to determine the kind and amount of gases liberated .

Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force's Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond's recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A's ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpage in the area has controlled most of the water's movement. Pond recharge from Mine B has led to similar conditions, and the degraded water is moving towards a local public-supply well. Pumpage from Mine D's interceptor wells is controlling some, but not all, of the movement of recharge seepage from Mine D's ponds. Recommendations include the need for enhanced monitoring programs at each current mine site, development of a monitoring program for Mine C's area, development of water budgets for all mines, investigation of tailings pond compaction and sliming, establishment of mine closure plans for containment of recharged pond water, and the need for additional interceptor wells in several locations.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes State severance taxes imposed on minerals and mineral fuels, provides a hypothetical example of how a State severance tax affects selected components of a firm's income statement, and uses the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) to estimate the effect of assumed changes in State severance tax rates on copper recovery cost at given levels of potential copper availability. A reduction of the rates to zero or a doubling of them results in changes in costs that are of the same order of magnitude as the cost of transporting copper to the United States from major foreign producing countries.

Synthesis of hydrocarbons by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction in a hot-gas- recycle system was demonstrated to be technically feasible. This project was undertaken, by the Bureau of Mines, to determine if the system was operable and to ascertain the optimum conditions for the production of gasoline. Carbon steel turnings packed with a void volume from 88 to 90 pct. were satisfactory catalysts, but steel catalysts with greater void volume, either turnings or steel wool, were not as active. Good temperature control with a pressure drop of less than 0.5 pounds per square inch (p.s,i,) per foot of catalyst bed of turnings was obtained by operating with a recycle to fresh feed ratio of 20 and by splitting the total gas flaw and injecting portions into the reactor at different entry ports.

"INTRODUCTION Exploration of the Iron Mountain and Bader iron-ore deposits in Llano County and the Gamble deposit in Mason County, Texas, was begun by the Bureau of Mines in January and completed in May 1944. The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. Detailed geophysical studies by the gravity method as well as with a dip needle were made by the Bureau of Economic Geology 3/ of the University of Texas and the Federal Geological Survey. 4/ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn the program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy., It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploration project as soon as practicable after its completion. "INTRODUCTION This report contains information on the approximate size of the smallest dust Particles revealed by or the limit of visibility of various microscopic systems. The information was obtained mainly for use in interpreting and evaluating results of number-contentration and particle-size, determinations on, samples of unhygienic particulate matter collected from industrial atmospheres and in developing better methods for determinations nations.Some speculation and even controversy have been published on the limit of visibility of the widely used microscopic system (16-mm., 0.25-or 0.3-N.A. objective, and axial light-field illumination) used in counting the dust in the liquid medium from impinger, 4/ 5/ filter-paper, 6/ and other samples, but little or no quantitative data have been published on the limits of visibility of this or other microscopic' system.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe interest, encouragement, and assistance received from H. Mineral analyses and electrical resistivity measurements of 324 representative samples of oilfield brines from 24 oil-productive counties in Mississippi and Alabama are presented in tabular form. Results of the mineral analyses, which include calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, sodium, and barium (with strontium if present), are reported in milligrams per liter. Electrical resistivity measurements in ohm-meter2 per meter at 75° F are reported in ohm-meters in the tables. Chemical analyses of formation waters are helpful to operators having water problems associated with petroleum recovery; electrical resistivity values are helpful in making interpretations from electric logs.

The continuing development of the nuclear industry in the United States requires a program of waste disposal that insures against the release of large amounts of radioactivity to the environment. This paper describes research on one proposed means of disposal of this waste, that of injection into geologic formations at depth. Nuclear production plant wastes were simulated and injected into samples of sedimentary rock obtained from outcrops, quarries, and deep wells. Changes in the chemical and physical characteristics of the rocks caused by the interaction of ions and suspended particles in the waste solutions with the cementing material and claylike particles in the rock are discussed. Laboratory tests show that nuclear wastes can be injected into many natural porous, permeable geologic formations. Injectivity can be maintained over a longer period by monitoring the ionic balance and particle-size distribution of waste streams. The combination of permeability and porosity with low cation-retention capacity, as exhibited by most sandstones, would satisfy the engineering requirements for the subsurface disposal of nuclear waste. Shales and clays with their low permeability and high cation-retention capacity would make excellent confining formations. The amount of cation retained by sedimentary rocks increases with increasing valence or concentration of the cation or decreasing brine concentration. The use of rock cores as model reservoirs had proved successful in determining some of the parameters that need to be considered in full-scale field disposal of wastes.

The chemistry of selenium and tellurium is discussed , along with a method of preparing a synthetic oilfield brine , an oilfield brine sampling method , and methods for determining selenium and tellurium in complex oilfield brines . Selenium either can be reduced to the elemental form with sulfur dioxide and determined semiquantitatively by color comparison of the red amorphous form or can be converted to selenite and determined quantitatively by reacting it with 3,3 ' - diaminobenzidine and obtaining its spectral absorbance at 420 mu . Tellurium can be reduced to the elemental form with hypophosphorous acid , and the spectral absorbance of its red hydrosol can be measured at 400 mu . Less than 0.05 mg / 1 of selenium and 0.1 mg / 1 of tellurium can be determined by the described methods .

Accurate flammability and ignitability data for chemicals form the cornerstone of procedures used to assess the hazards associated with commercial chemical production and use. Since 1967 the ASTM E27 Committee on the Hazard Potential of Chemicals has issued numerous, widely used consensus standards dealing with diverse testing and predictive procedures used to obtain relevant chemical hazard properties. The decision to issue a standard rests solely with the membership, which consists of representatives from industry, testing laboratories, consulting firms, government, academia, and instrument suppliers. Consequently, the procedures are automatically relevant, timely, and widely applicable. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the widely used standards, complemented with hypothetical but relevant examples describing the testing strategy, interpretation, and application of the results. A further goal of this paper is to encourage participation in the consensus standards development process. The paper is published in two parts. The first part (in the preceding issue of Process Safety Progress) dealt with the E27 standards pertaining to thermodynamics, thermal stability, and chemical compatibility. During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1.) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams. (2.) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard' were consistent throughout their calibration. (3.) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple. It seems that a calibration between 0 and -193° C. can be made within the stated accuracy by determining experimentally the e.m.f. of the particular couple at -78.50°, the normal sublimation point of carbon dioxide, and at -182.97°, the normal boiling point of oxygen. This report describes the dropping - mercury electrode , its use in analysis , and the procedure of the Health Division of the Bureau of Mines in determining lead , cadmium , and zinc . The dropping - mercury electrode or polarograph is an electrolytic device , one electrode of which consists of mercury issuing in small drops from a capillary tube . Such electrodes have been in existence for more than 50 years, but they were not used for analytical purposes until about 1922.6/ Developments since have been rapid , especially in Czechoslovakia , Germany , Italy, and Japan and more recently in the United States . A recent bibliography / contains references to, 825 articles issued from 1903 through 1940. In 1939 Kolthoff and Lingane presented the first comprehensive critical review, in English , of the device and its use in analysis . They have recently issued a book on the same subject. Similar information also is included in a recent book10/ by Kolthoff and Laitinen . Much of the information in this and the two following sections on this device and its use in analysis was obtained from these three publications . The use of the dropping - mercury electrode in analysis is based upon the fact that the kind and amount of electro - reducible and electro - oxidizable constituents in solution can be determined from the current -voltage relationships revealed by this electrode or electrolytic device .

The Bureau of Mines determined the factors involved in the corrosion of starting sheets used in the production of electrolytic zinc with the ultimate purpose of adapting zinc starting sheets to commercial practice . Under present practice , zinc is electrodeposited on aluminum cathodes and subsequently stripped for melting . The use of zinc instead of aluminum would eliminate the need to strip the deposit , thereby reducing the cost of handling and melting it , but zinc has not been suitable because it was too vulnerable to the corrosive attack of the electrolyte . Serious attack was found to be limited to the areas of the cathodes situated immediately above the surface of the electrolyte and to re - entrant corners . It was possible to avoid solution - level corrosion by immersing the starting sheets completely , exposing only a relatively heavy suspension member to solution - level attack . Zinc starting sheets could be made as reliable as aluminum and could be continued in residence for periods up to 39 days . Periods as long as a week were feasible under conditions similar to those found in commercial practice . A test of zirconium as a starting - sheet material showed that it promoted corrosion of the deposit to a lesser extent than aluminum and that the deposit adhered less tenaciously . These two properties lend themselves to the development of ways to strip deposits mechanically from zirconium starting sheets . Titanium was unsuitable for use as a starting - sheet material .

Two molten salt systems were evaluated as electrolytes for the repetitive recovery of tungsten from tungsten oxide (W03) made by calcining commercial-grade ammonium paratungstate. Using a sodium chloride-sodium fluoride-potassium aluminum tetrafluoride electrolyte at 800° C, 1 pound of 99.8 percent tungsten was recovered for each 2.7 kilowatt-hours of energy consumed. The metal contained 1,100 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of spherical grains, and had an apparent bulk density of 5.41 g/cm3. T ngsten of 99.9 percent purity was won from a sodium pyrophosphate-sodium tetraborate-sodium chloride electrolyte at 1,000° C; 6.0 kilowatt-hours of energy was consumed for each pound of metal recovered. The metal contained 120 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of hexagonal acicular crystals, and had an apparent bulk density of 7.25 g/cm . Each metallic impurity--aluminum, calcium, copper, iron, nickel, and silicon--in the two tungsten products was 16 ppm or less.
