"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Cependant, l’aménagement physique de l’équipement a une incidence non négligeable sur le coût installé d’une usine de concentration, et les répercussions sur l’aménagement de l’installation d’un circuit de triage du minerai dans l’usine doivent être soigneusement examinées. Effects of microsilica and reactive alumina type on flowability, flow decay and working time of Al2O3-SiC-C castables for blast furnace trough were investigated. The results show that at a targeted self flow values of (80 ± 10)%, water demand markedly decreases with increased microsilica addition. The nature of reactive alumina has a strong influence on flowability of the castables. Higher microsilica content contributes to a longer working time. The flow decays gradually until the working time and then drops abruptly. In addition, microsilica have positive effect on both cold strength and hot strength.

Glue is an animal protein that is used with other organic agent such as thiourea, in copper electrorefining. The concentration of glue has to be controlled carefully, because the electro-deposition process is often very sensitive to small fluctuation in the operating variable. This additive (glue) prevents rough and nodular copper cathode deposits. The nodular deposits may grow causing short circuits, which results in losses in production. Addition agents are effective in controlling metal growth; they modify the normal nucleation and lattice growth steps and refine the grain structure. In this research glue concentration was determined in an industrial copper electrolysis plant. A non-linear model with high capability was constructed and after optimizing its parameters, the accuracy and precision of the model were evaluated. For determination of glue concentration, electrochemical voltammograms in optimum condition (Differential pulse voltammetry technique, Hpulse=50 my, scan rate=10 mv/s) were plotted. Some information from voltammograms was transferred to the model as inputs and the calibrated model analyzed the information and the glue concentration was determined with high precision and accuracy. In this way there is no need to separate or add agents to remove interferences. This method has been successfully applied at Sarcheshmeh copper complex.

"Water availability is one of the principal parameters in determining the feasibility of mining projects in arid and semi-arid regions. The volumetric water footprint (VWF) of a conceptual model of a copper flotation plant was found to be 2.45 kL/t Cu ore, compared with an actual measurement reported in the literature of 2.72 kL/t Cu ore. The flowsheet considered included mineral processing stages such as crushing, screening, grinding, classification, separation, flotation, thickening and filtration. The effect of a number of variables on the VWF was evaluated, including solid/liquid ratio, feed mass flowrate, ore loss, water loss, moisture content of ore, ore grade and water recycling. The use of seawater with recycling provided the most environmental and economic advantage among several scenarios evaluated. The study assumed a price of $1/kL freshwater, $4/kL for transport over a 200 km distance at 2,000 m altitude and $4/kL for water treatment. The water related cost of the desalinated seawater use scenario was A$493/t Cu concentrate, while the water related costs of fresh water and blended water scenarios were A$308/t and A$268/t Cu concentrate, respectively. The water related cost (fresh water scenario) accounted for 44% to 49% of the entire mining and processing costs that included drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and concentrating. The total overall cost was A$435/t Cu concentrate for the seawater with recycling, compared to A$451/t Cu concentrate for the fresh water with recycling case.INTRODUCTIONReducing the water footprint (WFP) by utilising alternative water sources has been a focus of mining projects due to increasing concerns about water scarcity and growing energy costs. The global mining industry can expect to experience fresh water shortages in the future, and saline or hyper-saline water may be the only available water source to process minerals in arid regions. Extensive studies on alternative water sources (e.g. seawater, desalinated seawater, blended water) and the reuse of process water have recently been conducted (Moreno, Aral, Cuevas, Monardes, Adaro, Norgate & Bruckard, 2011; Aral, Mead, Cuevas, Davey & Bruckard, 2010). Such studies provide sustainable and economic strategies for mines and concentrators in the arid or semi-arid regions of the world such as in Chile, Peru, Indonesia, and Portugal. More work, however, is needed to confirm water consumption data for different base metal flowsheets and use this data to develop water models that can lead to reduced WFPs and more sustainable water usage in the mining industry."

"The production of pig iron, wrought iron bars and castings in Quebec during the 18th and 19th centuries has been so closely identified by historians with Les Forges du St. Maurice on the St. Maurice River a few miles north of Trois Rivieres (Three Rivers), that one is sometimes left with the impression that it was the only iron works that ever operated in the province. There were however, about twelve others, one of which was so completely re-built that it should probably be considered as a separate entity. All but two were constructed after the midpoint of the 1800s, coinciding with the growing Canadian demand for ""charcoal pig"" for railway car wheels and castings for industry, and about half of them were technically, if not economically, successful. The misconception about Les Forges du St. Maurice may have come about either because of its long history of somewhat less than continuous production over a century and a half, or a tendency of Quebec historians to concentrate on events in the French-Canadian milieu, but whatever the reason, the other Quebec iron works have been generally ignored. All but one of the Quebec blast furnaces could be described as ""pre-industrial"" with capacities ranging between three and ten tons per day, the exception being the Radnor furnace built in 1892 with a maximum production of about 35 tons per day and an alleged capacity of 50 tons per day. Until a railway network was completed in the 1880s, the location of all the Quebec iron works except the Grantham Iron works was dictated by close proximity to adequate ore reserves because horse transport was of little use beyond a ten-mile radius. The other essentials of forest resources (mainly soft woods) for charcoal, limestone for flux and water power, were generally available except within a few miles on either side of the St. Lawrence River. Among the dozen iron works established in Quebec between 1732 and 1880, seven used bog iron ore in charcoal-fired furnaces. Five of these, including Les Forges du St. Maurice, were located on or near the St. Maurice River which enters the St. Lawrence River from the north, and two, the St. Francis Forges and the Grantham Iron works were on or near the St. Francis River which enters the St. Lawrence from the south. In a general way deposits of bog iron ore in the St. Lawrence lowlands of Quebec were contained within the limits of the post-glacial Champlain Sea, with many clustered along the flanks of the St. Narcisse recessional moraine which is crossed by the St. Maurice and other near-by streams, and the Drummondville recessional moraine which is crossed by the St. Francis River."

"This study describes the strain behavior in vertical shaft lining (VSL) embedded in thick soil deposits and its application in assessment of concrete deterioration. The observed strain in VSL continuously decreased companied by a sinusoidal fluctuation due to the influences derived from negative skin friction (NSF) and temperature. The increase in strain increment between peak and trough at each year and compressive strain level as the servicing time continued and VSL depth increased implies that the concrete strength was attenuated, and this attenuation was significantly dependent on the existing compressive strain level in VSL. The reliability of the proposed approach was validated by Schmidt Hammer Technique (SHT) – based concrete strength, and is applicable in concrete assessment and then fracturing prediction of VLSs in thick soil deposits.Concrete strength, Field monitoring, Strain behavior, Vertical shaft liningINTRODUCTIONOver 100 VSLs in Southeastern China subjected to an unpredictable fracturing as shown in Figure1, and there are over 1,000 VSLs embedded in thick alluvium su?ering from challenges of damaging and potential fracturing (Cheng, Yang, Zhou, Li, & Hu, 1993; Zhou, Cui, Lv, Huang, & Chen, 1999; Li & Li,2005). Therefore, a reliable assessment of these VSLs is significant to the normal servicing of mine shafts and the recycle of underground space when these mine shafts were closed.The continuous increasing of NSF induced by the drainage of water–saturated deposits well interpreted such extensive fracturing phenomenon, and it is universally regarded as the governing indicator to determine the VSL stabilization (Cheng et al., 1993; Zhou et al., 1999). Based on this recognition, the fracturing prediction and VSL strengthening according to the field monitoring on hydrogeological characteristics, servicing environments, and mechanical behaviors of VSL were carried out (Zhao, Zhou, Zhong, Zhu, & Liang, 2009; Liang et al., 2009; Xie, Lv, & Wu, 2014). As known, the compressive strain level in VSL and the in–situ strength of VSL concrete were the main factors to perform such fracturing prediction. However, the existing studies in literatures were limited to the strain accumulating or releasing behaviors (Zhao, Zhou, Zhao, Kuang, & Hu, 2017), and lack of considering the VSL concrete strength and its attenuation. In this reported study, the in–situ monitoring data on the strain in typical VSLs and the VSL elevations between 2004 and 2014 were initially analyzed. Then, an observed strain behaviors–based approach was developed to quantitatively evaluate the VSL concrete deterioration."

Introduction The study of the ore deposits of British Columbia is one of fascinating interest not only from a scientific but also from a commercial standpoint and certain wide problems in connection therewith have interested me for some years. Several of these problems have been set forth in papers presented before this Institute on previous occasions. In 1918 it was pointed out that the commercial ore deposits of British Columbia, with one exception, were associated with the granodiorite batholiths of upper Jurassic age. This was followed, in 1922, by a discussion of the ore deposits of British Columbia in which the mineral belts of the province were defined and named, showing a zonal arrangement of ores in which the Pacific coast deposits are characterized by the presence of copper, while the interior belt is marked by the presence of silver, lead, and gold. Methods Of Investigation In reading various reports on the economic geology of British Columbia one is struck with the fact that the mineral veins may be arranged as a system and further examination will show that such a system follows two main directions, one northeasterly and the other northwesterly, both related in origin to the same force.

"The Snow Lake massive sulphide deposits are hosted by Aphebian volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which in this area were deformed and metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies during the Hudsonian orogeny. All the known deposits occur in felsic rocks a short distance below the contact with an overlying mafic rock unit.The Stall Lake copper deposit occurs close to the top of an explosive felsic volcanic sequence. Rocks stratigraphically underlying the deposit have been hydrothermally altered by the mineralizing fluids. The sulphides were probably deposited from submarine volcanic vent(s) on the flanks of a felsic dome. The ore has been tightly folded, flattened and elongated parallel to the northerly trending lineation of the surrounding rocks during the several periods of deformation. Strike lengths of the lenses range from 60 to 300 feet and plunge-to-strike ratios are as much as 15:1.Ore lenses 1 to 4 typically consist of massive coarse-grained pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. A stratigraphically higher lens differs in that it contains fine-grained pyrite and chalcopyrite, with an increase in sphalerite toward its hanging wall. The No.4 orebody has a distinct footwall alteration zone characterized by brecciation and abundant chlorite-staurolite-garnet schist, with minor kyanite, anthophyllite, cordieriteand anhydrite, as well as sulphide minerals. Chemically, the alteration zone is distinguished from the unaltered felsic rocks by Na20 depletion and Mg-Fe enrichment.IntroductionThe Stall Lake copper deposit is located aproximately 4 miles southeast of Snow Lake in northern Manitoba (Fig. 1). The Snow Lake district has been a producer of gold (Rex, Bingo, Laguana and Nor-Acme Mines) and, since the fifties, of copper and zinc from deposits of Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd . The district is located near the eastern limit of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which contains Amisk metavolcanic rocks of Aphebian age."

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. THE Joggins coal field, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia, is on the easterly side of Chignecto bay, at the head of the bay of Fundy. In area, so far as proven, the field extends easterly from the town of Joggins about fifteen miles to Chignecto. The distance across the outcrops of the several seams exposed is approximately one mile. HISTORY Early records of coal mining in this locality are somewhat obscure, but it is known that prior to 1750 the French settlers were mining coal for their own use from the seams which outcrop in the floor of the bay adjacent to the shore, where, at low tide, the reefs are bared for a mile or more. Coal was also mined from the seams outcropping in the cliffs. It is known, too, that at Joggins coal has been mined commercially for over one hundred years. At first, all shipments were made by water, but in 1882 a railway connecting with the Intercolonial railway at Maccan was built to serve this field. GEOLOGY Due to the abundance of fossils in the strata forming the Joggins cliffs, this area was for many years a mecca for geological students from all over this continent. A 'sunken fcrest' in the shoreline was of particular interest but, due to constant erosion by the sea, this has apparently been all washed away. On the Joggins shore, the cliffs stand sixty to one hundred feet high, and six workable coal seams, with numerous smaller ones, are there exposed. Others outcrop in the reefs extending from the shore toward the bed of the bay. In working underground, fossilized trees are often found immediately overlying a coal seam, and standing at right angles to the pitch of the seam. This is said to be an unusual condition. In most cases, the bark of the tree is a fine-quality coal, with high carbon content, whereas the pulp has turned to 'stone'. There is a definite tendency for the coal to run out, or turn to shale. One seam, workable two miles from the shore, has almost completely disappeared in the outcrop at the shoreline. ? It was thought that a large area could be mined under the bay from an opening near the shore, but the first submarine level had to be abandoned at a distance of 4,000 feet, where the coal became very dirty and shaly, and the mine able area to the westward became more restricted as the mine was developed to the deep. This tendency is common to all seams.

An adaptive approach to control the deformation in tube hydroforming process is presented. This requires: the use of an existing non-linear FE software (ABAQUS) that incorporates a user material model (VUMAT), the development and implementation of an adaptive control strategy to coordinate the internal pressure and the axial load so as to prevent fracture and wrinkling failures (knowledge-base controller) and the application of the developed adaptive simulation approach for finding the optimal loading path required to hydroform a defect-free part with as uniform thickness distribution as possible (user's load subroutine (VDLOAD). In order to validate the approach, the case of conical hydroforming and the case of bending followed by hydroforming component is discussed.

"The low consumption of reagents can probably be attributed to a good clean type of ore. The cyanide level is kept at 0. 8 lb/ ton of solution and the lime at 1. 8 to 1.9 lb per ton of solution (pH 12. 2 to 12 .3). Experience in cutting down the lime level in half produced troubles in the presses, in the refinery and resulted in higher cyanide consumption. Finally the residue increased under these conditions, High lime always seems to prevent the trouble from occurring.A survey at one mine of the taxable work, performed in the mine shops for use in the mine, showed that under the new regulations, this had increased some 30 times what it was before the new rules came into effect on June 14, 1963.A water softener idea is incorporated at Lamaque with the crude addition of 100 lb of lime per shift to a spare agitator to precipitate the bicarbonates as carbonates from the water before it enters the mill. The lime titration of the softened water is about 0,2 to 0.3 lb per ton of solution (pH 11). This water is used mainly on the filters as washes."

In the spring of 2009, Suncor Energy Inc. technical personnel saw an opportunity to improve planning 0and mining of overburden material in order to address aggressive construction goals and increased mining complexity. By tying together current and historical equipment performance, geological model information, and material observation in the field new operating elevations for the shovels were developed. At the same time, methodology of recording and reporting overburden movement through the Modular Mining DISPATCH system was changed. The result of this first stage of improvements was an increase in construction-grade material available at the face. The personnel involved realized that other opportunities were available to build on the initial successes and establish processes that would stand up to attrition and experience levels. A cross-functional technical team was assembled to identify ways of further improving workflows around overburden mining. Some of the opportunities realized include greater alignment between planning, reporting and operations as well as development of reporting tools that help steward Mine Operations to the plan. All of which have resulted in Suncor meeting or beating its forecast overburden targets. The cross-functional technical team continues to seek out new and better ways of doing business so Suncor can continue to deliver on its commitment of outstanding performance and results.

Further increase in gas turbine engine temperature necessitates continuous development and advancement to thermal barrier coatings. While tremendous effort has been devoted to developing new thermal barrier coating materials and processing methods in order to decrease the thermal conductivity, limited attention has been paid to radiative thermal transport through coatings. It is the purpose of this study to develop a new layered coating structure that can be used to effectively reduce the both radiative thermal transport as well as thermal conductivity, and to demonstrate the mechanism and effectiveness of the proposed multilayered structure. Mathematical modeling based on the multilayer quarterwave stack and simulation results are presented.

"Discussion at MeetingDR. D. DERRY (Ventures Limited) referring to the diagram (Figure 15) which shows a transverse structure section across the Central Slocan area, asked what the assumed structure at depth was, remarking that dips are steeper and more uniform at depth and that the contortions with gently-dipping axial planes are at higher elevations. He wondered whether the section represented ,part of a very large fold with steeply-dipping axial plane.MR. J. D. LITTLE (Canadian Exploration, Limited) replied that E. B. Mayo (Kelowna Exploration Company) and others had considered that the entire section illustrated faces to the southwest and represents part of the lower limb of a great overturned •syncline which is concave toward the southwest.DR. R. DEWIT (Geological Survey) remarked that the photograph of a ripple mark (Figure 7) showed internal lamination conformable to the ripple mark and wondered if the structure was not due to slumping during consolidation, since the normal mode of formation of ripple mark would seem to preclude the possibility of such internal stratification.MR. LITTLE remarked that in his opinion such structures should not be depended upon alone with-out other confirmatory evidence of the direction of tops of beds."

Magnesium and its alloys are attractive materials for use in automotive and aerospace applications because of the low density and good mechanical properties. However, difficulty in forming magnesium and the limited number of available commercial alloys limit their use. The present paper reviews the efforts to improve the attractiveness of magnesium through non-traditional processing, and presents preliminary results of current work on producing magnesium alloys via powder metallurgy P/M. P/M can be used to alleviate the formability problem through near-net-shape processing, and also allows unique chemical compositions that can lead to new alloys with novel properties. The feasibility of producing magnesium powder metallurgy products utilizing the industrially dominant process of mixed powder blending, uniaxial die compaction and controlled atmosphere sintering was investigated. An alloy composition based on the commercial Mg alloy AZ31 (3% Al, 1% Zn) was used to facilitate comparison to similar wrought products. The optimal processing conditions (compaction pressure, sintering time and temperature, and quenching temperature) were found to maximize sintered density and mechanical properties.

Arsenic, selenium and mercury species are common contaminants in mining aqueous streams and present significant environmental and health problems. The objective of this project is to investigate methods to lower the concentrations of these elements in mining aqueous streams. A new composite media for removal of these elements of concern from mining effluents was developed. The results of bench scale and pilot plant experiments, using the media, indicated removal of arsenic, selenium, mercury and other elements of concern below detection limits.

Ceramic fibers were classified as a category 2 carcinogen by The European U legislation. Therefore we developed non-fibrous insulating castable which utilizes n porous aggregate, which is composed of Calciumhexaluminate. Although at beginning we applied alumina cement as binder for non-fibrous insulating castable, kind of formulation had a poor resistance to spalling. We developed non-fibrous insulating castable without alumina cement. This solved a problem which pre\ formulation had a poor resistance of spalling. We applied a new non-fibrous insub castable for reheat furnace in steelworks, then we could achieve good result which condition equivalent to ceramic fiber insulating castable.

"Pulang Copper Mine is located in Shangri-La county, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with currently defined copper reserve of 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal and an average grade of 0.34% Cu. The mineralized zone in a dome shape is 2,300 m long, 600–800 m wide, and 1,000 m high. At present, the project is at a construction phase, with a first-stage mining and processing capacity of 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. Ore haulage is planned via a drift and ore pass development system. The cavability of mineralized rock is classified into three types (II, III, IV), with type III accounting for more than 98% of the total reserves. The cavability of the orebody is generally considered to be good and block caving mining method is planned. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are adopted for the mineral processing. The tailing dam construction method is a center-line method.INTRODUCTIONAs the China's largest underground nonferrous mine, Pulang Copper Mine is located in the northeast of Shangri-La County, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. It is 62 km northeast of Shangri-La city. Shangri-La County is a Tibetan-dominated, multiple-ethnic region, with a population of approximately 163,000 in 2009. The county is rich in mineral and water resources, thriving with tourism. Its economy is also dominated by agriculture. To date, the defined copper reserves at the Pulang Copper Mine is 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal at an average grade of 0.34% Cu. In addition, it contains a gold reserve of 145 tonnes, a silver reserve of 2,754 tonnes, a molybdenum reserve of 0.19 million tonnes, and a sulphur reserve of 10.5 million tonnes. The first-stage mining and processing capacity is planned at 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. When it ramps up to this production rate, the mine will produce copper concentrate containing 50,000 tonnes of copper and molybdenum concentrate containing 968 tonnes of molybdenum. A drift and ore pass system is planned for ore haulage and mining method is a block caving method. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are considered for mineral processing.
