Accurate evaluation of stress and geological conditions is critical to ground control design in underground openings. For a slope entry, the problem is more difficult, because a slope will transverse through many types of strata. Over the last few years, Keystone Mining Services LLC, an affiliate company of the Jennmar Corporation, has developed a new methodology designated the “Stress, geologic and support design system (SGS).” The method analyzes the stress, geology and support design for a mine slope. The method has been successfully applied in various new slopes across the United States, and ground control plans developed using SGS methodology has helped coal companies successfully pass review and/or hearings by state and federal regulatory agencies. With a case application in the U.S. Midwest, this paper details and demonstrates the main concepts of the methodology, including (1) analysis of stress and geology and identification of strong, fair and weak zones along the slope; (2) primary and supplemental support design; (3) long-term support design in the form of steel square sets or arches and (4) validation of the support design utilizing advanced finite element computer modeling.

INTRODUCTION Alpha-emitting radon daughter products are a recognized health hazard contributing to the development of lung cancer in persons exposed to excessive concentrations over an extended period. The primary control technique used by the mining industry is dilution with fresh air. Because the uranium is deposited in porous sandstone in most U.S. mines, the control of this hazard with dilution requires excessive volumes of air. As the mines become larger and deeper, the cost for ventilation becomes a major expenditure for the mining industry Most mines are maintaining levels of radon daughters lower than required by law but to maintain these present levels the mining companies are going to be drilling more vent holes or using other control techniques as the mine expands. These control techniques are being investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine their effectiveness, cost, and safety for underground use. [Instrumentation] The Bureau's early research used batch sampling of both radon and radon daughters for determining the concentrations. In both cases it was determined that batch sampling did not give a complete understanding of what was happening to the concentrations. Therefore, continuous monitoring systems were developed for both. A continuous flow-through radon monitor was developed by the Bureau (Franklin, et al.., 1976) using a modified Lucas flask mounted on a photo-multiplier-tube (PMT). The air was filtered twice prior to entering the flask to remove dust, diesel smoke, moisture, and radon daughters. The signal from the PMT was then inverted, shaped, and driven to a data acquisition system (DAS) which accumulated the signals. The DAS has two comparators for setting the scan time and interval, a 24-hour clock with Julian date, a printer, and a perforated paper tape punch. Sampling time is determined by the type of experiment being conducted. Our normal sampling time is one 10-minute scan every 15 minutes, but could be set as low as one scan every minute or as long as a 16-minute scan every 167 minutes. There are two models of the DAS. One is a 10-channel system and the other a 30-channel system. On a 10channel system normally 6 channels are used for radon and radon daughters and the other four channels are used for temperature, absolute pressure, air velocity, and relative humidity as described by McVey (1977). Figure 1 shows a scan of five channels monitoring the radon concentration from intake to exhaust in a stope for a non-work day. If the radon concentration stayed this constant during work days, then continuous monitoring would not be necessary. [ ] Droullard (1977) developed a continuous alpha-beta monitor. This monitor has been modified so that it can be used with the DAS previously mentioned. Control Techniques The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research in controlling airborne radon/radon daughter for 10 years. Major efforts have been conducted in sealing the rock to prevent the release of radon, bulkheading to seal nonproductive areas, backfilling with classified mill tailings, and positive pressure ventilation. Also, tests have been conducted to determine the mining cycles contribution to the radon problem. Surveys One stope with two intakes and one exhaust was continuously monitored to determine the effects of blasting, mucking, and drilling on the airborne radon concentrations (Franklin, et al., 1976). Two other detectors were located inside the stope which were close to the mining activity. In this stope no appreciable change in radon was observed during drilling holes for blasting and roofbolts. The high lithium demand forecasted for some high tech applications and batteries for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, in particular, has sparked increased exploration for lithium, particularly for lithium- and potassium-bearing brine deposits. The latter have generally followed the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) NI 43-101 guidelines on resource reporting, formulated for hard rock deposits (metals and industrial minerals). While a number of the requirements can be appropriately applied to brines, brines are fluids and require a specific analysis leading to a distinct set of reporting requirements. Brines cannot be considered industrial minerals because the various elements occur as ions in a dynamic fluid, rather than being chemically bonded in a solid. Although chemicals are produced from brines, brines have no relation to industrial mineral deposits. This article analyzes the recently released (Nov. 1, 2012) document CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines, in light of the practical knowledge available from existing brine operations. It recommends modifications to the guidelines, which, if applied in their present format, will result in overstating resources and reserves and mislead potential investors. The CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines document is generally descriptive and does not fully address the methodology for brine resource or reserve definition. Lithium and other elements (potassium, magnesium) are contained in a fluid, the hydrologic characterization of which should be the principal focus of a brine exploration program. The fundamental requirement in defining lithium brine resources and reserves in a salar is the identification and definition of those formations ? the aquifers ? that will yield brine in a usable quantity to a well, because brines can only be extracted by pumping wells. Fine-grained sediments will never, as required in the summary Table 1, have ?reasonable prospects of economic extraction,? cannot be considered and, therefore, need not be tested. However, the guidelines recommend the collection of solid samples and a high-core recovery for laboratory testing of various sediments instead of focusing on the brine.

Mine gob has long been a safety concern in the coal industry due to the air flowing through the gob area. Therefore, knowledge of the airflow distribution and locations of hazard zones in longwall gob is important to prevent and control these hazards. Due to the inaccessibility of mine gob, many numerical studies have been performed to simulate gob air leakage using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs, but most of the studies isolated the gob from the mine ventilation network (MVN) with only predefined pressure boundary conditions. The MVN is, in fact, not static in a dynamic longwall mining process, and it consequently changes the boundary conditions and the gob flow field (GFF). Therefore, the MVN should be incorporated in the CFD model to prescribe the transient boundaries. However, it is very challenging to couple the 1D MVN and the 2D/3D GFF to make the mine ventilation simulation realistic. This research uses a proposed novel finite tube method (FTM) to couple the MVN and GFF. In the FTM, the GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes, each of which is formed by two adjacent streamlines. These tubes connect the MVN into a new coupling network. Based on the FTM, a model for gas migration in gob is established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion.

Carbon dioxide capture from coal-fired power plant flue gas and subsequent sequestration is expected to play a vital role in mitigating global climate change. To meet the growing need for CO2 capture Technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and Utilization. We have successfully converted CO2 into oxalic acid using an electrochemical approach. If oxalic acid can be produced in bulk from CO2, it can be used to leach rare earth minerals at low cost. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. In this paper, we will present an idea of how the factors mentioned above will effect the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to Oxalic acid. INTRODUCTION. CO2 is thermodynamically quite stable, as shown by its highly negative heat of formation. Thus, it is expected that the formation of any useful chemical from CO2 will require the input of at least as much energy as geological sequestration. However, to be more effective the resulting economic value of the chemical need only pass the cost of the additional energy required beyond geological sequestration. This lends itself to two extremes: one where the quantity of energy required is low and one where the economic value of the additional energy is low. It is expected that CO2 can be reduced via electrolysis to several compounds. Of particular interest are formic acid, oxalic acid, methanol, ethanol, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide (as a component to syn-gas). These chemicals have been reported as electrolytic products previously in literature and have considerable potential for application. EXPERIMENTAL Electrocatalytic Production of Oxalate from CO2 We are using membrane electrolysis cell to produce oxalate from CO2. A membrane electrolysis cell is a 2-chamber electrolysis cell where the chambers are separated by a selectively permeable membrane. To produce oxalate, a cation exchange membrane (which selectively exchanges cations) was used. Previous literature suggests that in the cathode chamber an organic electrolyte, such as tetraethylammonium perchlorate or tetraethylammonium bromide in dimethylformamide, are preferred3. In the anode chamber, a sodium hydroxide solution water is used. Carbon dioxide is then bubbled into the cathode chamber as a current is applied.

The calculation of costs for an underground mine, as well as the planning of the equipment and materials to be used, is a complex and time-consuming process. The estimation depends on a multitude of parameters, and all mining processes are interconnected. A novel tool has been developed that enables automated calculation of underground mines and allows for the comparison of the effects of changing individual parameters. Previously, changing individual planning parameters often necessitated a complete recalculation of the mine. The newly developed calculation tool provides an innovative planning aid that allows for more efficient and accurate mine planning and cost estimation. The tool enables the user to implement continuously up-to-data costs and prices. This allows for more accurate planning data and results. The underlying concept of the calculation tool, its implementation at a planned quartz porphyry mine in Germany, and the verification of the tool at an existing underground mine will be presented.

Evaluation of the stability of a structure under given boundary conditions requires accurate knowledge of the state of stress as well as the mechanism of failure at the critical state of stress. This paper represents a part of the research done by N. K. Bohidar during 1965-1968 for his Ph. D. research in Mining Engineering at the University of Utah. It summarizes the determination of internal stress and failure phenomena around cylindrical openings in viscoelastic media subjected to lateral restraint and vertical uniaxial load. The conditions of lateral restraint and viscoelastic nature of the media represent conditions associated with subsurface openings in rocks. The financial assistance provided to the project from the University of Utah Research (Uniform School Fund), W. C. Browning Scholarship Fund, Earth Science Research Fund, and D. C. Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the cost approach category for real property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties. The author reasons that standards and regulations pertaining to real property valuation should be modified, and underlying principles should be expanded, so as not to inhibit appropriate application of these cost approach methods.

This paper examines the effect of bucket geometry (cutting-blade profile, floor profile and blade thickness), speed, motor power output and muckpile particle sizes on bucket penetration and draft for rubber tire loaders. The work uses a 1:16 scale model of a load-haul-dump (LHD) in full-factorial experiments to examine the effect of the variables on penetration and maximum draft. The results show that speed and motor output are positively correlated with penetration and draft, and muckpile particle size is positively correlated with penetration and negatively correlated with draft (p < 0.0014).

Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10&apos;) M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

"In April 2016, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) began requiring the use of continuous personal dust monitors to monitor and measure respirable mine dust exposures to underground coal miners. Mines are currently using the PDM3700 personal dust monitor to comply with this regulation. After the PDM3700’s implementation, mine operators discovered that it interfered with proximity detection systems, thus exposing miners to potential striking and pinning hazards from continuous mining machines. Besides the PDM3700, other electronic devices were also previously reported to interfere with proximity detection systems. MSHA sought the aid of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and mining industry stakeholders to determine how the PDM3700 and some other electronic devices and proximity detection systems interact with each other. Accordingly, NIOSH investigated existing standards, developed test protocols, designed experiments and conducted laboratory evaluations. Some interferences were observed to be caused by electromagnetic interference from some electronic devices, including the PDM3700. Results showed that there was no significant interference when the PDM3700, as well as other electronic devices, and the miner-wearable component of the proximity detection system were separated by distances of 15 cm (6 in.) or greater. In the present study, it was found that the PDM3700 and the personal alarm device needed to be at least 15 cm (6 in.) apart in order for them to be used simultaneously and reduce potential interference. IntroductionUnderground coal miners are exposed on a daily basis to a variety of hazards, such as coal dust exposures, high noise levels, roof and rib falls, potential for fires and explosions, and operating and working with heavy machinery. One of the hazardous jobs is that of operating or working near a continuous mining machine. According to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics, 44 miners had been fatally struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems have been developed and are required on all operating continuous mining machines in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face continuous mining machines, by 2018 (MSHA, 2015a)."

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. We commonly consider conflict in a two-party sense, but this deeply over-simplifies the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

The top-down extraction sequence in the sublevel open stope method relies on rib pillars to support excavations, making pillar and stope stability crucial for controlling dilution. This study introduces an integrated methodology using a genetic algorithm to optimize the layout of open stopes and rib pillars while considering both economic and geomechanical performance. The methodology incorporates user-defined parameters such as the minimum size of stopes and pillars, maximum accepted dilution and acceptable percentage of pillar failure. A profit function that attributes economic value to the geometric configurations, including geomechanical performance, is employed. The geomechanical performance, assessed using numerical models in FLAC3D, includes the average percentage of pillar failure and potential dilution. The study was tested on a mining panel from an underground gold mine using a top-down mining sequence. The optimization achieved an 8 percent increase in net profit compared to the traditional engineer’s design when 70 percent hangingwall support efficiency was assumed, and a threefold reduction in pillar failure percentage. When no hangingwall support was considered, the net profit increase reached 22 percent. These results demonstrate that the proposed methodology enables integrated optimization, balancing mining costs with geomechanical performance and reducing the need for secondary support compared to traditional methods

Pilot-scale tests indicate that effec¬tive concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% minus 400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concen¬tration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity -1.0 tph dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75.0%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

The Black River Falls Mine is owned and operated by Jackson County Iron Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Inland Steel Company. It is located in vest central Wisconsin, seven miles east of the city of Black River Falls. This is the first taconite plant in the state of Wisconsin. Iron mining started in this area in 1856 but soon failed due to the low grade ore and crude methods of mining and transportation. Inland Steel Company acquired the property in 1939. Some drilling and test work was done in 1940, but the economics of developing the property at that time were not favolable. Improved methods of concentrating and pelletizing in the 1960&apos;s made it possible to build the present plant. Due to the limited ore reserve of 45,000,000 tons with expected recovery of 33% it was necessary to limit the capacity of the operation to 750,000 TPY with a life of 20 years. There was some concern about an operation of such limited capacity. A million ton operation was considered the minimum size plant for a profitable operation.

With the depletion of high-grade iron ore resources, the utilization of existing low-grade iron ores, fines and tailings with effective beneficiation is inevitable to meet the iron and steel industry’s required specifications and demand. JSW Steel Limited is operating a 17-mtpa beneficiation plant at its Vijayanagar site in Bellary in Karnataka, which produces nearly 50 to 54 percent concentrate as sinter-grade fines. The sinter base mix consists of iron ore fines that are smaller than 10 mm, with 41 percent smaller than 0.150 mm; washed ore that is generally smaller than 3 mm and bigger than 0.150 mm, with 3 to 9 percent smaller than 0.150 mm; beneficiation plant concentrate, with 97 percent smaller than 0.150 mm; limestone; dolomite; coke breeze; lime; sinter return fines; direct reduced iron (DRI) fines; and micropellets produced from steel plant waste. Using more washed ore in the sinter base mix affects the sinter quality. Ball formation in the mixing and nodulizing drum is an important step in sinter making and requires sufficient quantity of smaller than 0.150 mm fines. Optimization of fines in the sinter base was carried out by replacing the smaller than 10 mm iron ore fines with washed ore. Size analysis, study of the granulation index (G index) and optimization of moisture with respect to sinter bed permeability were carried out to optimize the proportion of smaller than 0.150 mm fines in the sinter base mix as adhering material. This study explores the optimization of fines in the sinter base mix for ball formation to achieve higher sinter quality and productivity with higher sinter bed permeability.

The San Gabriel Valley contains some of the richest and most extensive sand and gravel deposits in California. Operating quarries within the San Gabriel area mine more than 15 million tons of high quality aggregate per year. This represents about 45 percent of the total mined in the greater Los Angeles area, one of the nation&apos;s largest aggregate markets and producing regions. Popular opposition to continued aggregate production in the San Gabriel Valley is high, especially in the city of Irwindale where 40 per-cent of the city&apos;s property is made up of "excavated holes," some 150-200 feet deep. Reclamation of 70 years of mining is now an almost impossible task. Zoning regulations have the effect of depleting these vast reserves rapidly by changing the definition of total reserves to include only "legally minable reserves." All but two or three of the aggregate mines now operating will be depleted or zoned out of business by the year 2000. Some studies indicate that there will be no aggregate mining operations by 1995. Recent studies show a drastic change in land use patterns within this valuable mineral resource area over the past 20 years. The San Gabriel Valley is a classic example of the lack of adequate regional planning with regard to urban development in MRA&apos;s and represents a "too little, too late" effort by local government and industry.

There are a number of air classifiers manufactured throughout the United States and the rest of the world. The classifiers manufactured by Alpine, A. G. of Augsburg, Germany, are unique in their abilities. It is this uniqueness that I wish to delve into and in this respect we will limit this discussion primarily to the classifiers as manufactured by Alpine. It has been reported in the past that these classifiers were introduced into the. United States in the late 50&apos;s. Until the introduction of the Alpine Classifiers, air classification seldom produced a satisfactory fractionation of a product below 45 microns (325 mesh) or above approximately 22 mesh. It has been a common practice to classify fine materials which used water as a carrier medium The use of centrifuges are today producing thousands of tons of finely partitive powders in the very small particle size range. The use of centrifuges in connection with wet grinding mills has increased the rates of production of these mills considerably.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.
