World class performance is the ultimate objective of many maintenance organizations. It marks the organization as a leader in its industry and sets it apart as the ultimate achiever. But what is a “world class” standard and how can it be achieved? Is there a yardstick by which an industrial organization can measure the relative performance of its maintenance activity and compare it with performance levels that universally identify “world class” status? Are there financial formulas, achievements, evaluation techniques or indices that provide this yardstick?

In this paper, long-term measurements in five underground mines are presented to demonstrate how these measurements can be applied to stability evaluations and design of underground excavations. These case studies address both the global aspects of strata response to mining activities as well local ground behavior and support loading. The measurements include static (stress and deformation) and geophysical. Case studies quantify pillar behavior, roof-floor deformation patterns, overburden response, and microseismic activities. Large-scale studies quantify the nonuniform nature of overburden deformation and collapse. Local measurements address yield and stable pillar load deformation characteristics, as well as the performance of support systems under combined axial and lateral loads.

The Factorial Model Experimenters are often interested in systems that are multi-factorial. A multi-factorial system is one whose output is believed or known to be dependent on the particular settings of several inputs, or factors. We can think of these factors as defining a space, with each point in this space corresponding to a particular set of factor settings. Experimenting can be thought of as exploring this space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. There are several challenges in this exploration, among which are deciding what region to explore, designing an experiment that explores it most effectively, and describing the results of the exploration. This paper deals principally with the last of these; it shows how the factorial model can be used to describe how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. A strength of the factorial model is that it treats the factors as causes of change in the system's response and focuses on relations among these causes. In particular, the factorial model focuses on whether causes act independently on the system (in a sense to be explained below), or whether they interact. This is important because the experimenter generally seeks to control the system, and because control based on causes that act independently of other causes is relatively simple, whereas control based on causes that interact is more challenging. Also, mapping the space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed - will require less work if, during the exploration, it can be determined which of the causes act independently. For the sake of example, let us assume that the space we are exploring is three-dimensional, and that we have already defined, for each of the three factors, the range of interest. Let us consider all the ways in which the response of the system might depend on the settings of these three factors. In the simplest case, the response in this region does not depend on any of the factors. The response is constant throughout the space, at say, 80 units.

Limestone-based technology for arsenic removal from water is an innovative and promising method. The technology offers the potential for low-cost disposal of a stable waste product after arsenic removal, either in an ordinary landfill or by encapsulation in concrete. Leaching research described in this paper shows that the limestone waste, after encapsulation in concrete, passes the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Leaching was less than 0.05 mg/L, which is 1/100 of the U.S. EPA?s standard for disposal of arsenic in a landfill. Disposal of arsenic-enriched waste is critical for commercial viability of arsenic-removal technologies. Low-cost disposal gives the limestone-based method an advantage that could help communities meet the new maximum contaminant level of 10 parts per billion for arsenic in drinking water. The ability to recycle the waste material in concrete could add a significant economic benefit, further reducing overall costs.

"Underwater hydrothermal vents are known since the 1970s and their importance for the global economy is growing as new discoveries and new assessments are made each year (Cherkashov et al., 2010; Corliss et al., 1979). The similarities of seafloor massive sulfides, representing the younger versions of the well exploited on land volcanogenic massive sulfides, bring an increased awareness to the potential of the sea (Ajan G. Galley, 2007; Hannington et al., 2011; Herzig and Hannington, 1995). The Arctic Ocean presents itself as an opportunity to study new interest areas and numerous hydrothermal systems (active and inactive) were discovered along the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge (AMOR) (Pedersen et al., 2010b). The Mohns ridge is an ultraslow spreading ridge of the AMOR (Vogt, 1986) where two hydrothermal vent sites were recently discovered, the Jan Mayen and the Loki’s Castle (Pedersen et al., 2010a; Pedersen et al., 2009; Pedersen, 2005). Here we compare these two Arctic hydrothermal systems, which represent two well-differentiated end-members of hydrothermal fields in the region."

This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

"The Vietnamese economic growth of more than 5% per year leads this country to an enormous demand for raw materials. In the duration of ongoing expansion, the big challenge in the coming decades will be to make this process as sustainable as possible when it comes to economic, environmental and social objectives. Risk management especially in occupational safety and health (OSH) in enterprises is one of the most important tools to achieve this aim. But until now, this has not been taken into priority by Vietnamese coal mining enterprises. Main reasons for this situation can be found in deficient legislative conditions and in non-synchronized risk management systems. In contrast, Germany has implemented an adequate legal system and the German mining industry has gained lots of experiences in risk management, especially in occupational safety and health. This paper seeks to point out specific challenges how to improve occupational safety and health in Vietnam by transferring and applying German methods and standards."

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. The World Bank Group (WBG) believes that extractive industries can make significant contribution to sustainable development and poverty reduction, providing that environmental, social, and corporate governance issues are properly managed. The WBG recognizes that stakeholders have legitimate concerns about the impact of extractive industries, and management proposals are built around the central theme that investments and policy advice in the extractive industries should lead to poverty reduction. To help governments create appropriate policy and regulatory frameworks, this paper focuses on the linkages between overarching policies and laws and the management / governance of extractive industries at the local communities. It encourages the use of new instruments designed to help ensure that local communities benefit from extractive industries.

The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.

The status and outlook for mining, in your view. Minerals remain a major part of the world’s economic foundation. The fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends, but mining is no less important today on a global basis than it has been historically. Certainly, portions of the industry are critically depressed — domestic copper to name one area —but other sectors are prospering. Mineral consumption, both worldwide and in the United States, has increased steadily since the Great Depression, hitting all-time highs in 2000, the last year for which I have seen data. The highly developed economy in the United States tends to obscure the continuing importance of minerals here. But in less developed nations the critical nature of minerals is obvious and well accepted. In short, although there is no shortage of problems or challenges facing mining — there never has been — mining remains an essential business with great global opportunity.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is an internationally recognized classification system that can be used for preliminary ground control design. The RMR system assigns quantifiable values to predefined classified parameters of a rock mass. Assigning a single value rather than a range to each parameter is a source of uncertainty, however, assigning a single value can be useful for further studies related to RMR ratings. Fuzzy systems are being used in an increasing number of application areas where linguistic rules are used to describe the system. In past decades, fuzzy systems have been successfully used in geotechnical and mining engineering problems to cope with uncertain data as well as with vagueness. In such scenarios, linguistic rules and rating-based classification of rock masses have always been questionable. The objective of this study is to apply fuzzy set theory to the RMR classification system. The fuzzy system proposed in this study is specified for weak and very weak rock masses (RMR<50) based on data collected from Nevada gold mines where 68% of RMR data is in the ?poor? and ?very poor? classes. In this approach, a Mamdani fuzzy algorithm has been constructed to evaluate basic RMR89 rating for the ?wet condition.? Comparison between basic RMR89 and fuzzy RMR shows the fuzzy RMR system is valid to predict RMR from the discrete rating of each input parameter.

"A reliable supply of non-energy raw materials is a precondition for the functioning of the European economy. In line with its importance, the issue of raw materials supply has become more prominent in the past years, especially owing to turbulent raw material markets. However, these turbulences are not due to depletion of the geological resources but to a missmatch of (expected) supply and (expected) demand, with several interacting factors influencing the markets both from the supply as well as from the demand side. A recent evaluation, published in June 2010 within the framework of the EU Raw Materials Initiative, sought to bring together these two sides of raw material markets and asked the question "which raw materials are critical for the EU?" Herein we present the methodology used by the Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials and the results obtained, complemented by results from the study "Raw Materials for Emerging Technologies"."

Moisture deterioration of clay-rich roof rocks causes high numbers of roof falls in coal mines in humid summer months. Rocks with high moisture content are generally weaker and can further deteriorate when subjected to wetting and drying cycles. As a result, it is important to evaluate the moisture-sensitivity of roof rock prior to mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated three moisture-sensitivity index tests on roof rocks from 23 U.S. coal mines. The three tests were the University of Kentucky Weatherability test (Weatherability test), the Consol Energy Water Sensitivity test (Water Sensitivity test), and the NIOSH Immersion test (Immersion test). Of these three tests, the Weatherability and Water Sensitivity tests are more reliable in classifying the moisture-sensitivity of roof rocks. Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard rock and mixed face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM over fifty years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates higher and cutter costs lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. This paper describes recent improvements in disc cutter components including cutter ring materials and processing, as well as improvements in lubricants, bearings, seals and cutter condition monitoring. These developments have resulted in more reliable cutters capable of operating in a wide range of geological conditions. Ultimately these improvements result in a better value for both contractors and project owners.

Increasingly new interceptors or new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) projects require connections to existing tunnels. More often than not, the existing facilities are old, in poor or questionable conditions, without proper construction records or as-built drawings. Many cannot be easily inspected unless major construction effort provides flow by-pass for safe access. This paper provides general guidelines on how to approach the problem of assessing the condition of old tunnels, how to plan and design the connection with limited physical assessment, how to develop the scope of work for the bid documents and how to provide geotechnical guidelines and designs for the bid documents.

Binders have been suggested as an aid for agglomeration to improve copper recovery in heap leaching operations. However, it has not been established if the use of binders would negatively affect the solvent extraction process, which is used to purify the pregnant leach solution from the heaps and remove any contaminants. Such negative effects would lead to an increase in processing costs or a decreased in copper production. The controlled studies reported here have shown that some binders (a polyacrylamide and a waste treatment additive) did not interfere with the solvent extraction process. Other binders (a polyvinyl acetate emulsion and tall oil pitch) negatively impacted copper solvent extraction and, therefore, should not be used in copper heap leaching plants.

The Brightwater Conveyance System consists of four tunnel segments in three tunnel con-tracts, comprising over 21,760 m (71,400 ft) of pressurized face tunneling in complex glacial and non-glacial soft ground conditions with a large proportion 60 m (197 ft) or more below the ground surface with up to 7 bars groundwater head. This resulted in unique technical challenges for establishing geotechnical baseline values. The process used to develop these baseline values and specifications with regard to the level of risk that the owner, King County, was willing to accept is described in this paper.

The incorporation of low cost technology transfer to increase the ability of locals to acquire and maintain long term employment are key ingredients for sustainable industrial development. Alcoa’s Alumar plant on the island of Sao Luis is the largest and most modern refinery/smelter complexes in northern Brazil. The plant has one of the most advanced Environmental, Health, and Safety management process in the aluminum industry. Technical assistance, training and financial support were made available to Alumar to address social sustainability issues. Through several programs led by employees on a voluntary basis and applying intensive and extensive training programs, Alumar has enabled local people to develop skills on agriculture and land management, wastes minimization, small business development and administration, all based on sustainable development and social responsibility concepts.
