The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

In response to the enormous amounts of coal discard generated during coal mining and preparation, the development of an efficient and sustainable strategic use of this resource is essential. Furthermore, the rising urban population over the next decades is confronted with the depletion of quality raw materials for building components. To this end, this study reports new information on the morphology, water absorption, and flexural strength properties of ceramic composites produced from three different coal discards and polysiloxane pre-ceramic polymer (PCP) resin. In addition, test results relating to the continuous operating temperature, chemical resistance, and efflorescence potential of the composites are presented. The results show that the water absorption and flexural strength of the coal composites, up to 1.94% and 36.46 MPa respectively, exceed the requirements for ceramic and clay roof tiles. The continuous operating temperature of composites is found to be more thermally stable than conventional roofing tiles (concrete and ceramic) between ambient temperature and 600°C. In addition, the excellent chemical resistance of the composites (94.43%−99.98%) compared to conventional roofing tiles (67.82%−99.97%) eliminates the need for additional external coatings. The interesting results documented so far suggest that this technique could be used to produce low-temperature application building products such as bricks, panels, roofing tiles, etc. This new recycling technique offers an excellent opportunity to eliminate enormous volumes of coal discard and to advance the circular economy in the coal industry.

I appreciate the honour that has been bestowed upon me by my election as President of this Institute. We are starting what I believe will be a challenging year. The first challenge facing the Institute is financial. From the accounts for you will note that the Institute operated at a loss for the first time since 1987. average membership subscription was increased by only 10 per cent, reflecting desire to keep costs down in the minerals industry. The Institute will therefore to rely on other income to meet its budget requirements and break even financially. source of these funds will be the activities of the Technical Programme Committees. disciplines-Mining, Extraction Metallurgy, and Metals Technology are planning programmes for the coming year. I urge al members to increase their support of colloquia schools. Increased membership would also bring in more funds. Please, therefore, encourage colleagues who are not yet members of the Institute to join it.

The reprocessing of tailings resources to extract gold on an industrial scale has become common practice. While these projects are common in the Witwatersrand basin, similar low-technology processes are not operational in smaller goldfields. This study explores the possibility of reclaiming the tailings dump of the Louis Moore Mine in the Giyani Greenstone Belt, investigates potential hazards to communities in the vicinity, and identifies mitigation strategies. Auger samples were taken from the Louis Moore tailings at depths of up to 5 m. Aqua regia leach analyses show Au concentrations of up to 1 g/t. Inferred estimations based on ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) methods put the residual Au resource in the Louis Moore tailings dump at 0.20 t. Reworking the tailings is viable, although a potential environmental risk exists in the form of elevated arsenic concentrations. Further exploration is required to determine the mineralogical associations of Au and As. Tailings reworking would assist in raising funds for mine rehabilitation. The secondary tailings could potentially be repurposed, which would provide employment and facilitate community development, as well as deliver environmental benefits.

Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X-ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

"In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra Diamonds is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘PDL’. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the 3106 carat Cullinan Diamond — the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found — was discovered there. The mine has produced over 750 stones that are larger than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are larger than 400 carats. Cullinan is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds (Petra Diamonds, 2018)."

The influence of solution treatment on the phase evolution and tensile properties of Ti-Mo alloys was investigated to assess their potential use in biomedical applications. Phase formation and microstructural evolution were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties were characterized by means of tensile tests and bending strength. XRD analysis showed that solution treatment increased the volume fraction of β phase and supressed the α" phase. The microstructures of the as-cast alloys consisted of β equiaxed grains with sub-grain structures of different sizes, while the solution treated alloys comprised β equiaxed grains only except for Ti- 10.02Mo, which comprised needle-like α" structures. EBSD showed an increase in the volume fraction of the ω and α" phases in all the alloys after solution treatment. The elastic modulus and UTS of all the alloy significantly decreased after solution treatment, except for Ti-15.05Mo,whereas the elongation significantly increased. The fracture surfaces of all the alloys after solution treatment indicated more ductile behaviour than brittle

A nutating grinding mill, exemplified by the commercial HICOM mill, achieves efficient particle size reduction through the accelerated motion of the material charge within the nutating chamber. This design, characterised by high particle velocities and rapid charge circulation, offers a compact solution compared to tumbling mills. There have been concerns regarding the mechanical reliability of kinetic joints for certain specialised mining applications. Recognising the need to model internal forces in such systems, this study focuses on the uncoupled simulation using multibody dynamics and the discrete element method. The investigation employed a small-scale experimental test mill, referred to as the NuMILL, featuring a cylindrical chamber (140 mm internal diameter, 245 mm height, 6° nutation angle). Instrumented with an array of sensors, the NuMILL provided internal load data for validating the simulations. Experiments were conducted with an empty chamber or filled with charge material. Charge materials included coarse sand or steel pellets with a charge-to-chamber mass ratio of 0.25. The mill speed ranged between 100 to 700 RPM. Multibody dynamics modelled resultant inertial and frictional loads within 5%, while the discrete element method simulated the internal material contact loads with accuracies ranging from 1% to 19%. The combined simulation approach predicted the resultant forces in the critical kinetic joint within a 20% margin. Representing the charge using rigid lumped mass elements was also studied. The presented simulation techniques, validated against experimental data, offer a robust foundation for analysing larger systems, including the industrial-scale HICOM.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African industry, with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel and possibly more pressing need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. It is in these essential areas that chronic shortages continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to meet the needs of the South African mining industry, in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

Accretions often form in furnaces when slag and charge materials attach to the refractory wall and build up over time. Accretion formation is usually unwanted because it reduces the working volume of the reactor and hinders material flow through the reactor. However, in some instances a thin, stable accretion layer may be desirable to protect the underlying refractory material. In order to prevent and/or manage accretion formation, it is important to understand the underlying principles of this phenomenon in the particular reactor. Excessive accretion formation hampered production at the Exxaro FerroAlloys ferrosilicon melting and atomization plant. This plant uses induction furnaces in which a 15% silicon-iron alloy is produced by batch smelting a mixture of ferrosilicon of 75%Si grade and low-carbon steel. The molten ferrosilicon alloy is then gas-atomized to a powdered product for use as a dense medium in mineral processing plants. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different impurity levels in the ferrosilicon feed material on the extent of accretion formation as well as the effect on the accretion properties, which influence the ease of accretion removal upon furnace shut-down. Refractory and accretion samples were collected after a furnace shut-down and characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy. It was concluded that the trace elements in the FeSi-75 feed material (Al, Ca, Mn) were mostly responsible for accretion formation, but that rust on the low-carbon steel and oxidation of the steel contributed to accretion attachment to the lining. The total contaminant content, calcium to aluminium ratio in the FeSi-75 feed material, and thereby the liquid to solids ratio in the accretion at temperature determine the strength of attachment as well as growth of the accretion.

Mine-impacted water, including acid mine drainage (AMD), is a global problem. While precipitation of dissolved metals and neutralization of acidity from mine-impacted water is accomplished relatively easily with lime addition, removal of sulphate to permissible discharge limits is challenging. This paper presents a high-level comparison of four sulphate removal technologies, namely reverse osmosis, ettringite precipitation, barium carbonate addition, and biological sulphate reduction. Primarily operating costs, based on reagent and utility consumptions, are compared. Each process is shown to be subject to a unique set of constraints which might favour one over another for a specific combination of location and AMD composition. Access to and cost of reagents would be a key cost component to any of the processes studied. The total cost calculated for each process also depends on the type of effluents that are allowed to be discharged.

"Investment in diamond exploration has been declining over the past decade, in spite of positive long-term industry fundamentals and a growing interest in diamonds as an investment category. The lack of new significant discoveries in recent years has eroded investor confidence, yet no new discoveries are possible without investment in exploration. Junior ‘mine finders’ have been the hardest hit. Their agility, tenacity, and appetite for risk are not sufficient to attract the funding required, even at the greenfield stage. Developing new discoveries into mineral resources can be crippling without solid financial support. Junior incubators could play a crucial role, especially at the project evaluation stage – but where are they? Alternatives to traditional funding mechanisms have become available, many still untested in the junior diamond exploration space. Valuable lessons can be drawn from the past and used to inform emerging new strategies. IntroductionDiamonds are the ultimate expression of love. Their ancient and timeless allure continues to influence consumer emotions and behaviours across continents, cultures and age groups. Analysts are predicting a sustained supplydemand shortfall in the years ahead which will trend diamond prices generally upwards. With positive long-term industry fundamentals, one cannot help but wonder why funding for diamond exploration and development projects is so scarce.Investment in exploration across commodities – including diamonds – has been declining for a number of years, reaching a historic eleven-year low early in 2017. The lack of major diamond discoveries in recent years has done little to strengthen the case for investing in diamond projects, yet no new discoveries can be made without investment in exploration.Global estimates of known carats in the ground stand currently at 2.5 billion carats, which equates to around 18 years of production at current levels of 140 million carats (mct) per annum. Sustainable replenishment of depleting diamond resources is possible only through the development of new discoveries. This is what junior explorers are best at – but they need investors to fund their evaluation activities from early in the project development continuum."

"The ventilation system of the Pyhasalmi Mine is described. The mine is located in an area where the annual atmospheric temperature may vary from +30°C to -30°C. Natural ventilation causes serious difficulties because the underground mine is connected by drifts and finger raises to the bottom of the 120 m-deep open pit.The natural ventilation tends to make the ventilation net unstable. The paper describes how the instability characteristics of the ventilation net can be studied and how they have been taken into account when automating the control of the ventilation. In addition, the software, hardware and costs of the system are described. The system consists of 12 automated ventilation doors, two mine fans, 8 elements for sensing the air flow and temperatures, a control panel and a process computer."

Most mine safety initiatives in South Africa are doomed to limited success because of one simple fact: they are a-historical and un-cultural and do not deal with the serious ?legacy issues? that still negatively impact on safety, production, and relationships. We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The programmes are no less than nation-building - something most necessary in the industry, with the pressures from community, unions, the DMR, and politicians. This presentation will describe and discuss the 4th Wave as an advance on previous safety technology and programmes, as particularly relevant to platinum mining in South Africa today.

This paper is focused on the development of iridium(IV)-specific quaternary diammonium cations containing electron-donating substituents in the benzyl group of methyl and electron-withdrawing substituents such as triflouromethyl and nitro groups. Quaternary diammonium cations used were tetra- 4-methylbenzyl-1,10-diammonium decane chloride (QuatDMDAMeBnz), tetrabenzyl-1,10- diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDABnz), tetra-3-trifluoromethylbenzyl-1,10- diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDACF3Bnz) and tetra-4-nitrobenzyl-1,10-diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDANO2Bnz). Polyvinylbenzylchloride (PVBC) nanofibres were used as support material, and the functionalised nanofibres were used for separation of Ir(IV) from Rh(III). The sorbent materials were characterised by FTIR and elemental analysis. The efficiency of the quaternary diammonium cations was investigated in a column study under dynamic flow adsorption conditions. Column sorption of [IrCl6]2- and [RhCl5(H2O)]2- on nanofibres functionalised with diammonium cations showed [RhCl5(H2O)]2- was not adsorbed by the sorbent materials while [IrCl6]2- was loaded onto the column. The loading capacities of [IrCl6]2- on the quaternary diammonium sorbent materials increased in the order of F-QuatDMDAMeBnz (3.08 mg/g) < F-QuatDMDABnz (3.39 mg/g) < FQuatDMDACF3Bnz (5.46 mg/g) < F-QuatDMDANO2Bnz (7.10 mg/g). The loading capacity for Ir(IV) with quaternary diammonium cationic nanofibres increased with an increase in the electron-withdrawing nature of the substituent on the quaternising group. The charge delocalising ability of the 4-nitrobenzyl group resulted in the best interaction of the decamethylene diammonium cation with [IrCl6]2-. "The primary function of a tundish in the steelmaking industry is to serve as a buffer tank, accepting molten steel from the batch ladle process and allowing it to be cast continuously. However, modern steelmaking has more stringent demands for the quality of the steel product, requiring increased control over the properties of the molten steel before casting. For this reason tundishes have been developed as metallurgical reactors to serve as the final step in refining of the molten steel by removing non-metallic inclusions, preventing the formation of new inclusions, and promoting chemical and thermal homogeneity. In this study the flow behaviour in a four-strand tundish was investigated by means of a half-scale water model as well as numerical modelling. Both the numerical study and physical model were used to characterize residence time distribution (RTD) in the vessel and calculate properties pertaining to the tundish flow regime. Three different tundish configurations were investigated: a bare tundish with no flow control devices, a tundish with a turbulence inhibitor and a tundish with both a turbulence inhibitor and a dam.The physical and numerical models showed that a tundish without flow control devices was prone to significant short-circuiting. A tundish with a turbulence inhibitor was shown to be successful in preventing short-circuiting and provided surface-directed flow, which aids inclusion removal in the slag. Despite the benefits of the use of turbulence inhibitors, it was observed that the upward-directed flow increased the maximum turbulence kinetic energy near to the surface by approximately 120% compared with the bare tundish. Therefore the potential for slag entrainment should be considered during the design and operation of tundishes utilizing turbulence inhibitors."

It is therefore not surprising that the recent Symposium on Ion Exchange and Solvent Extraction in Mineral Processing, held at the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) on 7th and 8th February, 1980, was a resounding success. There are two main types of densifying cyclones currently available in the market, namely polyeurethane (PU) and ceramic. The PU densifying cyclones are currently used throughout the Grootegeluk complex and coal beneficiation in general. It has been identified that PU densifiers wear relatively fast depending on the operating pressure and need to be replaced frequently as a result. The motivation for this paper is to achieve an increase in the densifying cyclone lifetime through less wear and an increase in efficiency resulting in the ability to build higher relative densities (RD) more quickly. This will allow for a reduction in downtimes due to replacing densifying cyclones as well as building RD and a reduction in the operating costs associated with replacing worn densifying cyclones. Some of the major findings of the study indicated that the ceramic cyclone theoretically undergoes less wear than the PU cyclone, but since wear is application-specific and was evaluated, the wear on the polyurethane cyclone was found to be minimal. The RD differential is higher on the PU cyclones than the ceramic cyclones, showing that the PU cyclones perform better in a densifying application. This is the first test conducted on this application and type of cyclones. It should therefore be noted that having the PU cyclone significantly outperform the ceramic cyclone was not expected, due to the only change being the material of construction. This is an indication to take the material of construction into account when selecting cyclones as it can have a significant impact on the cyclone performance in specific applications. "Syngas from Africary’s Theunissen underground coal gasification (UCG) project will be used for power production and synthesis of liquid fuels and commodity chemicals. However, some of the coal components, especially condensable water, oils, tars, inorganic trace elements, and a small fraction of fly ash and particulate matter, make their way to the surface via the production well and can cause adverse impacts on downstream processes. Africary’s standard design incorporates a cold gas clean-up system that relies on relatively mature techniques based on highly effective wet scrubbers and acid gas removal (AGR) systems such as Rectisol®, but with the downside of low energy efficiency and waste water generation. In this paper, novel technologies for removing contaminants and species separation from the hot (T > 300°C) raw syngas are compared. Comparisons are made between supersonic gas separation (SGS), Ranque–Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT), vortex gradient separation (VGS), and inertia vacuum filtering (IVF), and a vortex-based gas separation concept is proposed for UCG applications. IntroductionImpurities in gasification feedstock (coal, biomass, waste, etc.), especially sulphur, nitrogen, chlorine, and inorganic mineral matter, often end up in the syngas and can cause adverse impacts on downstream processes. Some available warm gas cleaning technologies include traditional particulate removal devices such as cyclones, candle filters, membranes, and molecular sieves. The warm gas desulphurization process technology developed by RTI LLC (2018) requires hot syngas to remove sulphur and has become commercially ready. Many other hot gas cleanup systems are still under development, given the technical difficulties caused by extreme environmental and operating conditions."

Thirteen different slag compositions were chosen based on different levels of the MgO content and the mass ratio of CaO/Al2O3. The results indicated that the density of the slag decreases with increasing MgO content (from 0–3.78 mass%), but increases with further increases in MgO content up to 11.33 mass%. At a fixed MgO content of 5.5%, the trend of density change with CaO/Al2O3 in the slag is similar to that for changes in MgO content. On the basis of the regular solution approximation rules of excess molar quantities, an attempt was made to estimate the molar volume of the slags investigated. The application of the molar volume model confirmed that the present expanded approximation rules are applicable to predict the molar volumes of the melts discussed.IntroductionDensity is one of the most important fundamental properties of slags, which influences metallurgicaly phenomena in many ways. Density is sensitive to the nature of the chemical bonds and the species in the melt, and is of great importance not only for theoretical research on the structural properties of molten slags, but also for industrial applications. Density is also required to estimate other key properties used to assess the behaviour of high-temperature molten oxides, e.g. viscosity, surface tension, and thermal conductivity.Liquid calcium aluminate slags that contain magnesia are the basis of most ladle slags for secondary refining processes. The CaO-Al2O3 binary phase diagram (Hallstedt , 1990) shows the eutectic composition (50 wt% CaO and wt% Al2O3) has the lowest melting temperature. The main emphasis of this study is on the 12CaO·7Al2O3 refining slag with MgO additions. The CaO-Al2O3-MgO ternary system is of considerable importance in industrial metallurgical processes, and is fundamental to the understanding of metallurgical slags, ceramic materials, and geological phenomena."
