Uranium metal was electrowon from uranium dioxide dissolved in fluoride melts . The UO₂ was fed directly to the cell in a continuous manner . Electrolysis was performed at 1 , 200 ° to 1,300 ° C in electrolytes composed of UF4 , LiF , and BaFa . A single regulus of metal was collected in a confined area of the crucible . Product purity of 99.8 percent was attained . Carbon was the major contaminant . Compartmented cells were studied as a means of confining the oxide feed to the vicinity of the anodes .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating strata interactions associated with mining of multiple coal beds to provide the mining industry with improved methods of planning and developing multiple coalbeds, conserving resources, and increasing the safety of underground coal mining. This study involves analytical predictions and underground observations of longwall development ground control problems at a south-central Pennsylvania coal mine affected by subsidence induced by multiple-seam mining. As predicted, strata interactions were found in upper mine areas mined over lower mine gob. Observations revealed roof deterioration accompanied by excessive water inflows in the first 170 ft after crossing the gob line as mining entered and exited the subsided area (over the lower mine gob). In contrast, superimposed mine areas and areas mined a substantial distance out over the gob showed no signs of interaction with previous lower seam mining, again as predicted.

"The presence of agglomerated particles in airborne dust in coal mines has been confirmed by SEM examination of static samples collected on substrates. In addition, the effect of agglomerated particles on the performance of cascade impactors and cyclone-type personal samplers has been studied. Simple procedures have been developed for evaluating the extent of agglomeration in air-borne dust by comparing the observed size-selectivity of the sampling devices with that expected under idealized conditions. Applications of these techniques in the laboratory and in underground mines are discussed.INTRODUCTIONAirborne dust is invariably present in mine atmospheres. Particle size is a primary factor in determining the behavior of the dust, its effects on miners' health and the effectiveness of dust control measures. Obviously, agglomeration of the dust particles can have important effects on: ""natural"" dust removal processes such as settling• the use of water sprays etc., for dust control• pulmonary deposition characteristicsIn addition, the presence of agglomerates could influence the effective toxicity of the dust. For example, ultrafine particles are often thought to be relatively unimportant in the development of respiratory ailments because of their low deposition efficiency. However, the latter could be substantially increased if such particles were present in larger agglomerates. It is by no means obvious that there should be significant agglomeration of the airborne dust in a mine atmosphere. In fact, calculations based on the classical coagulation theories indicate that, at the kinds of dust concentrations that exist even in what would be regarded as “very dusty"" atmospheres, the coagulation half-time* .should be of the order of weeks or even months. On this basis, agglomeration would be expected to be essentially negligible. On the other hand, laboratory experiments (Polat et al., 1991) have revealed very extensive agglomeration in the airborne dust released during the crushing of individual coal and mineral particles. It is postulated that such agglomeration occurs immediately at the point of dust generation. In other words, many of the fine fragments produced on fracture are never completely separated from their neighbors."

This paper , which describes the mining methods and costs at the Atwood copper mine in the Lordsburg ( Virginia ) Mining District of Hidalgo County , N. Mex . , is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices , methods , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and surface plant are situated in the west half of sec . 7 , T. 23 S. , R. 18 W. , about 3 miles by road southwest of the center of Lordsburg , near the old abandoned townsite of Valedon ( see fig . 1 ) . The main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes through Lordsburg , as does the paved eastwest U. S. Highway 70-80 . A spur line of the Southern Pacific ends near the mine . A good graded road connects the mine with Lordsburg . The following pages present a brief history of the district , describe the geology , and outline methods of prospecting and exploration, including sampling and estimations of tonnages and values . Development, and mining methods are explained , and transportation , ventilation , drainage ,. safety measures , and organization are described . The wage scale and costs of development and mining comprise the corrcluding sections of this circular .

The Bureau of Mines conducted drag cutting experiments in hard, abrasive rock in an effort to extend the capabilities of an experimental kerf-core mining machine. The basic kerf-core mining machine cannot be used in hard, abrasive rocks because of the high wear experienced by the kerf cutters. These experiments were conducted in an effort to develop a method of preweakening the rock ahead of the kerf cutters in order to reduce the high cutting loads and hence the higher wear rates experienced by the cutters. The two "preweakening" techniques studied were indenting with mechanical wedges and single and double slotting with diamond saws. The best cutter force reduction achieved with mechanical indenting as 70 pct, whereas double slotting achieved force reductions of up to 99 pct. Conceptual designs of preweakening systems that could be retrofitted onto the basic kerfing cutterhead were developed for both the indenting and the slotting techniques. A high-energy impactor with wedge bit was used for the indenting method, and high-pressure water jets were used for the slotting method. A preliminary technical and economic analysis was performed for both of these full-scale systems to illustrate the methodology and to point out the important technical and economic factors that must be considered.

"INTRODUCTION Respirable dust is defined as the dust which penetrates to the alveolated regions of the lungs. Due to the size selective nature of the particle removal mechanisms in the nasal passages and lung airways, criteria defining respirable particles must be a function of the particle size. Three criteria defining respirable particle penetration are shown in Figure 1. These criteria have been defined by the British Medical Research Council (BMRC), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and German TBF 50-11 (1).The quantity of respirable particles in an aerosol can be measured by use of two-stage samplers. The first stage consists of a particle preclassifier with penetration characteristics corresponding to one of the respirable penetration curves in Figure 1. The large nonrespirable dust particles are removed from the airstream in the preclassifier and the smaller respirable dust particles pass on to some device which can measure their concentration (the respirable dust concentration).Instrumentation for the measurement of respirable coal mine dust has been limited by the severe conditions existing within the coal mine. The conditions of particular importance are the methane atmosphere, high humidity, and the general non-laboratory type environment. The most severe of these conditions is the methane atmosphere since any electronic or electric powered instrumentation must be intrinsically safe to operate in such an atmosphere.In spite of the difficulty of sampling respirable dust within the mines, many instruments have been developed for in mine use. Although these instruments operate under a variety of principles they generally fall within two categories: personal samplers and area samplers.A personal sampler is worn by the mines while he is performing his duties in the mine. These devices are generally small, light weight and require little power so as not to interfere with the miner's ability to work."

Increasing longwall panel dimensions, particularly face width in gassy coalbeds, may result in unexpected increases in methane emissions. To investigate this problem, continuous longwall face emission monitoring studies were conducted at two adjacent mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed, where longwall faces were to be extended from 229 to 305 m (750 to 1,000 ft). It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229 m (750 ft) wide longwall faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7 percent (0.6 m3/min (20 cfm)), to 8.6 m3/min (304 cfm) at the VP-1 Mine. In contrast, it was predicted that extending faces at the VP-3 Mine could increase methane emissions by as much as 13 percent (1.8 m3/min (65 cfm)) to 16.1 m3/min (567 cfm). The geologic and mine design factors influencing the variation in face emissions between the two mines will be discussed.

The ever-increasing need to guard against stream pollution has intensified interest in the problems of handling and disposing of flotation tailing. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of using crushed washery refuse to adsorb the free water in thickened flotation tailings on a bench scale and then in a pilot plant because the conventional methods of disposing of coal flotation tailings--impounding them or filtering them so they are dry enough to be conveyed to the refuse dump--are sometimes either impractical because of space limitations or costly because of low filter capacity. Most of the refuse samples tested were of similar mineralogical composition and exhibited similar water retention capability. The amount of crushed refuse required to adsorb the water in a particular tailing was influenced greatly by the fineness of the solids in the tailing and hence the percentage of solids to which it could be thickened. The ratio of crushed refuse to tailing solids required to provide a mixture dry enough to be carried on an inclined conveyor belt varied from 2.4 to 6.4. Several chemical agents that were tested were very effective in turning the free water in tailings into a stable gel. Fly ash also was very effective in adsorbing water.

A prototype mucking machine designed to operate in narrow-vein stopes was developed by Foster-Miller, Inc., Waltham, MA, under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The machine, called a compact loader-trammer, or minimucker, was designed to replace slusher muckers in narrow-vein underground mines. The minimucker is a six-wheel-drive, skid-steered, load-haul-dump (LHD) machine that loads muck at the front with a novel slide-bucket system and ejects it out the rear so that the machine does not have to be turned around. To correct deficiencies of the tether-remote-control system, a computer-based, radio-remote-control system was retrofitted to the minimucker. Initial tests indicated a need to assist the operator in guiding the machine in narrow stopes. An automatic guidance system that used ultrasonic ranging sensors and a wall-following algorithm was installed. Additional tests in a simulated test stope showed that these changes improved the operation of the minimucker. The design and functions of the minimucker and its computer-based, remote-control system are reviewed, and an ultrasonic-sensor-based guidance system is described.

"As stated earlier the primary goal of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. While initial work was directed to coal dust the charge to the dust center has been expanded to include diesel particulates and asbestosis, the latter of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace.A major facet of Dust Center research has been the analysis and documentation of comprehensive research protocol and procedures that are appropriate state-of-the-art in the various areas of respirable dust. In addition to definition of standardized research protocols and procedures which would be utilized by center personnel for uniformity and reproducability there is a considerable need for utilizing standardized respirable dusts in experiments with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. This respirable dust needs to be available in large quantities for a wide variety of research uses that include animal and medical experiments. The dust must be free of the lubricating oils and grinding wheel contaminants that are frequently encountered in laboratory generated dusts.The holistic approach to establishing standardized protocols and procedures applicable to the five major research areas of the center is presented in Figure 5.In one hypothesis, range in coal volatility is considered to be a major causal factor in the incidence and severity of pneumoconiosis. Therefore a suite of characterized standard respirable dust samples have been prepared for researchers from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz, limestone (rockdust) and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared.A suite of medical investigations have been developed utilizing small and medium size animals as well as non-human primates in a variety of dust/lung interaction projects which will be discussed in the next section. A number of respirable dust sampling and dust generation methods have been investigated and selected techniques utilized for both in-mine and in-laboratory research investigations. These will also be discussed in more detail later. A wide range of respirable dust size, chemical and mineralogical analyses have been investigated, standardized and documented for use in various research investigations.This interaction and documentation of various respirable dust sample procedures, animal and medical tests, sampling and dust generation methods, plus size, chemical and minerological analysis applied in the five major areas of research investigation have served to create a very favorable synergism and rapid technology transfer in the respirable dust center."

This report (Independent Functional Safety Assessment Guidance 7.0) is the last in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and after-market suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. The vapor pressures of liquid columbium and liquid hafnium were deter-mined by the Langmuir free evaporation method as a part of the Bureau of Mines program on the study of transition metals. An electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible was used for melting. Temperature was measured with a two-color ratio pyrometer. Least-squares analyses of the vapor pres-sure data gave the following equations: [Logp (atm) = 5 .429 -31,310 T] for liquid columbium in the range 2,740° - 3,140° K, and [Log p (atm) = 5,690 28 T] for liquid zirconium in the range 2,500° -2,810° K. Third-law evaluations of each data set gave mean heats of sublimation (298.15° K) of 175.1±3.2 kcal/mole and 148.3±1.2 kcal/mole for columbium and hafnium, respectively. Second-law standard heats of sublimation determined from sigma plots and from sigma-prime plots agreed fairly well with the third-law values. The sigma-prime plots gave standard entropies of sublimation of 30.96±0.84 eu and 33.S6±0.44 eu for columbium and hafnium, respectively.

Develop a simple and economical technique for determining the absolute stresses and the change of stress on the surface of roofs, floors, or walls in miners. Approach Use a commercially-available, permissible, Whittemore-type gage to determine the stress at the surface of a mine opening and to monitor any stress changes that might take place. How It Works The following equipment is used: ? One steel templet (for laying out a 60° rosette on the: rock surface). See first photograph. ? One 3/8-inch rock drill bit for drilling holes for the rosette pins. ? Six stainless-steel rosette pins. ? One Whittemore-type mechanical strain gage. ? One drill (not shown). ? Epoxy for cementing the rosette pins. ? Tape to hold the pins while the epoxy sets. The major industrial classifications in stone mining are dimension stone (used for construction purposes), crushed and broken stone (aggregates), cement, and lime. • Stone mines comprised 30.3% of all mining operations. • Mines producing crushed and broken stone (n = 3,412) comprised 78.3% of all stone mining operations.

Provide a means for continuous measurement and display of respirable dust concentrations in a mine so that when high dust levels occur, timely, corrective measures can be taken. Approach Develop a personal dust monitor that (1) is small and light enough to be worn by a miner, (2) has the capability to continuously measure the respirable fraction of coal dust, (3) will display the respirable dust concentration in mg/m3, and (4) can store the average respirable dust concentration and sampling time of several sampling shifts for later play-back. How It Works The personal dust monitor (PDM-1) uses light scattering and convection air currents to sample the respirable fraction of coal dust. Convective air currents cause dust laden air to pass through an open-celled sampling chamber (light sensing chamber). A near infrared light emitting diode (LED) located in the PDM-1 emits pulses of light. The pulsed light passes through a focusing lens and glass window into the sampling chamber. The light is then reflected, scattered, and refracted by the airborne dust particles. Light scattered within the angles of 450 to 900 (the angles within which the intensity of the scattered light is most closely related to respirable-size dust particles) passes through another window and is focused on a light detector. The light detector signal is amplified and presented as analog output voltage for conventional recording. This signal is also converted to a digital signal which the microprocessor uses with its crystal clock to calculate the 10-second average dust concentration, the shift average concentration, the time-weighted average concentration, and the elapsed sampling time. The microprocessor also stores dust concentrations of the seven most recent sampling periods, controls the operation of the LED and detector, and operates the liquid crystal display (LCD).

As part of its effort to produce cell-grade alumina from clay, the Bureau of Mines investigated the hydrogen chloride gas-sparging crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) from aluminum chloride liquor, to provide information for optimizing the crystallization operation. Four parameters important in controlling the crystallization of the aluminum chloride hexahydrate and the concentration of impurities, particularly phosphorus and magnesium, in ACH crystals are (1) aluminum chloride concentration in the feed solution to crystallization, (2) hydrogen chloride gas flow rate, (3) temperature, and (4) concentration of phosphorus and magnesium also in the feed solution. Parameters 1, 2, and 3 affect crystal formation. The combined effects are very important because the phosphorus and magnesium concentrate in the crystals during the early stages of crystal growth. Aluminum chloride hexahydrate of cell-grade purity was crystallized from saturated aluminum chloride solutions containing less than 0.003 wt-pct P205 and 0.010 wt-pct MgO. Crystallization temperatures less than 600 C decreased crystal purity.

This report is an economic evaluation of the production of hydrogen in a continuous system by the steam oxidation of partially reduced iron oxide in a fluidized bed at 7 atmospheres using producer gas to reduce the iron oxide. The oxidation-reduction step is based on experimental data obtained by the Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh Coal Research Center. The estimated capital requirement for a plant producing 30 million std. c.f.d.3 of 99.8 percent purity hydrogen at a discharge pressure of 450 p.s.i.g. is $13,100,000, using January 1961 equipment cost data. Based on a 330-day operating year, the operating cost before profit and taxes with coal price as a variable is estimated to be:

Photometric instruments were designed and built for use with X- ray and spectrographic apparatus for the investigation and analysis of a variety of materials of hygienic interest . The instruments are simple in design , may be constructed economically , and have a number of features that make them stable and easy to operate . They are readily adaptable for measurement of either X - ray diffraction patterns or spectrographic films or plates . Because of these features and the interest shown in the instruments , they are described in detail , and reference is made to their application in the laboratory .

The principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji in 1982 were unrefined gold, silver, and tellurium. The combined value of these commodities was about $16 million,2 representing over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products were the other minerals produced in Fiji. Despite the small part played by minerals in Fiji&apos;s economy, exploration on land and in the coastal areas was carried out by several international mining companies representing Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and U.S. interests. At the end of 1982, 30 prospecting licenses covering 2,300 square kilometers were issued. Most licenses were for copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Total expenditure on mineral exploration was $3.5 million.
