Although viscosity is known to be important in processing and handling finely ground urea, its effect has never been fully quantified. This report describes the methods used and the results obtained in the initial phases of a broad investigation of the influence of viscosity of water suspensions of minerals in flotation, thickening, filtering, and other mineral-dressing unit operations. Several types of vis-cosimeters were tested before reliable and reproducible results could be obtained on mineral suspensions. After the viscosimeter used in the research was calibrated and standardized, tests were made on six pure minerals to study the relationship of pulp density, particle size, crystallinity, and cleavage on viscosity. An orifice-type viscosimeter equipped with a mechanical stirrer gave as good results as other types and was more flexible, faster, and simpler to operate. The orifice-type viscosimeter, when calibrated and standardized with glycerin and water mixtures, proved satisfactory over a wide range of viscosities. The accuracy and reproducibility were reasonably constant between 1 centipoise and 200 centipoises, the anticipated range in common mineral-dressing unit operations.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

"The in vivo toxicity of vanadium(V) has been found to correlate with the depletion of cellular glutathione and related non-protein thiols. With a view to understanding the mechanism for this observation, we have investigated the oxidation of glutathione, cysteine N·acetylcystcinc and pcnicil· lamine by vanadium(V), using electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology. The spin trap used was 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline I-oxide (DMPO). It is found that the oxidation of these thiols by vanadium(V) generates the corresponding thiyl radicals and vanadilim- (IV) complexes. The results suggest that free radical reactions play a significant role in the depletion of cellular thiols by vanadium(V) and hence in vanadium(V) toxicity. 1. INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports on the identification of thiyl radicals formed as intermediates in the reaction of vanadium(V) with glutathione (GSH) and related nonprotein thiols. This study was undertaken because the biochemical mechanism of vanadium toxicity is still not fully understood,. despite being a topic of current research activity [1-20). As to possible clues, it is known that vanadium is most toxic when administered in its pentavaient state [21), and that vanadium(V) administration into laboratory mice reduces cellular levels of NAD(P)H and GSH [22). While the oxidation of NAD(P)H by vanadium has been studied extensively [16-20), that of glutathione and related non-protein thiols has been paid less attention. On the other hand, GSH and related thiols are important cellular antioxidants [23). Their functions include decomposing lipid peroxides and protecting cell membranes [23-25). Thus any reduction in the cellular contents of such nonprotein thiols after vanadium exposure may result in the accumulation of lipid peroxides which might ultimately lead to tissue injury. With a view of finding the mechanism for this thiol depletion process, we have investigated reactions of non-protein thiols with vanadium(V). Particular attention has been paid to the detection of thiyl radicals, since it has been postulated [l] (but not experimentally proven) that the glutathionyl radical (GS·) might be an intermediate in the reaction between vanadium(V), NADH and GSH. We have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology for investigating the reactions of GSH, cysteine, N-acetylcysteine and penicillamine with vanadium(V). The results show that the corresponding thiyl radicals are indeed formed in the one-electron reduction of vanadium(V) by all of the above mentioned thiols."

The transverse loading requirement for stoppings as specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations is 39 psf. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on arching has been developed to determine the true transverse load capacity of stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate rigid-arching of stoppings was developed and verified through full-scale in-mine tests. Using this protocol, a systematic study of the design parameters that affect arching capability in block stoppings was conducted. The study included a theoretical assessment of arching and development of design formulations that can accurately define the transverse load capacity of various stopping constructions under various loading conditions. This approach should lead to a safer mine environment by matching the transverse load capabilities of the stopping design to the requirements in the mine to ensure proper ventilation control is maintained.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted considerable research to improve life support technology for underground mining applications. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that may help increase the chances of mine workers in surviving underground disasters. Several papers address the performance of present self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's) and provide proposed guidelines for the design and testing of a second-generation SCSR. Improvements In the safety and effectiveness of mine rescue and recovery operations are described, including the design of a low-profile rescue breathing apparatus and a rescue team helmet.

This report analyzes the petroleum-production potential of the basal Greenbrier dolomite zone, Sycamore-Millstone field, Sherman District, Calhoun County, W. Va., through the application of certain secondary-recovery methods. The well logs obtained and the core recovered from a well in this formation permitted an evaluation of the productive capability of the reservoir, Approximately 120,000 stb of oil may be produced from a 20-acre five-spot unit at breakthrough if the property is waterflooded. At an assumed limiting producing gas-oil ratio of 20)000 sef/stb, approximately 69,000 stb of oil should be recovered by low-pressure gas drive.

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve resource conservation, mine planning and development, is currently investigating the loading behavior of pillars in multiple-seam developments. The simultaneous mining of two or more coalbeds may cause instability between room-and-pillar operations resulting in an interaction known as pillar load transfer. Although pillars may be adequately designed for single-seam mining, the development of a second seam may complicate loading conditions in both operations. If pillars are not adequately designed to contend with this load transfer, failure of the mine structure may result. To improve multiple-seam development and pillar design, the Bureau studied the loading characteristics of pillars in three separate multiple-seam operations. In all three cases, instrumented pillars recorded increasing pressure after development of the second seam. Increases in the average pillar pressure ranged from 7 to 110 pct over predicted overburden loads. An analysis of pillar loading before and after second-seam mining indicates that the ratio of overburden to innerburden thickness is a critical factor influencing load transfer. Based on this relationship, safety factors for case study pillars are calculated and alternative design considerations are discussed.

One of the common methods of increasing recovery of oil from partly depleted oil sands is to inject natural gas, air, or air-gas mixtures into the sand, thereby supplying energy to move oil into the well bore. Where natural gas is not available, air or an air-gas mixture is used as the repressuring medium. Air-gas mixtures are obtained from the casing-heads of oil-producing wells in the areas repressured with air or air-gas mixtures and consist usually of varying amounts of the hydrocarbon gases, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Laboratory experiments have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of air on crude oils.4/ In these experiments the crude oils were oxidized by the air, and the degree of oxidation depended not only upon the chemical composition of the crude oil but also upon the duration and method of contact between the oil and air, the temperature of the fluids and the concentration of the oxygen. "The Bureau of Mines evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from 135 mines and deposits worldwide. Collectively, the evaluated countries represent 93 pct of world gold production. Total recoverable gold available (as of January 1984) from a subset of 111 significant producing mines and developing deposits in 13 market economy countries (MEC's) is estimated at 810 million tr oz. The Republic of South Africa is estimated to account for 87 pct of total recoverable gold. The United States and Canada account for 4 and 4.5 pct of the total, respectively. Eighty-three percent of total recoverable gold is available at a constant 1984 break-even price of $400/tr oz, and 70 pct is available at $300/tr oz. South Africa accounts for 90 pct of the gold available at $400/tr oz or less.Major conclusions are that (1) South Africa should remain the largest world producer through the year 2000, (2) annual MEC output in 2000 should not be significantly different than current output given constant 1984 gold prices of more than $300/tr oz, and (3) there may be a significant decline in production after 2010 in the absence of major new discoveries and continued development of new mines to offset the depletion of the South African mines. INTRODUCTIONSince the late 1970's the world gold mining industry has been characterized by dynamic growth in production and volatility in price. World production in 1983 was almost 15 pct greater than in 1980, and the short-term trend continues upward. Annual dollar-based price changes since the early 1970's have been unprecedented in both magnitude and volatility. This commodity, which sold for $35/tr oz3 for over a third of a century, reached an annual average $612/tr oz in 1980. Until 1980, the future price of gold seemed set on an upward trend. Since that year, however, world gold prices have fallen by over 50 pct to slightly over $300/tr oz at the end of 1984.Against this background, this study was undertaken to determine (1) the level of world demonstrated gold resources, (2) total and annual availability of gold mine production, (3) long-run production costs per operation and by national aggregates, (4) the economic and technical factors that impact upon cost and availability, and (5) probable future mine production and cost trends."

Dehydrogenation factors, proximate analysis, and ultimate analysis were examined as predictors of the low-temperature -carbonization properties of coals varying in rank from lignite through anthracite. All factors studied contributed to reduction in variance of the sample populations investigated. Response surface regression models based on variables from proximate and ultimate analyses of coal were constructed for eight low-temperature carbonization assay product and gas component Fields. These models were tested with independent samples that included drill cores, sized fractions, petrographic fractions, and run-of-mine coal. The models developed were used to predict low-temperature carbonization yields or coals from major fields of Wyoming. This information was cast in the form of contour plots describing the potential low-temperature carbonization product yields of Wyoming coals and the properties of the resultant char or coke. The variables used as input v the models may be measured and collected during exploration; thus, the carbonization properties of a seam can be determined in advance of mining. The information presented in this report is useful in that it broadens the deciionmaking base for management when either mine locations or coal conversicl plant sites, or both, are being considered.

The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas con-tent of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and des orbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

The geology, mining, beneficiating, types of products, and costs in terms of percent of total costs and of labor, power, and supplies of two crushed- limestone operations in Madison County, Iowa, are described in this paper. The operations are basically similar, differing in refinements in mining, product types, and markets. The operations are comparable as to personnel and as to weighted costs in terms of percent of total costs and in terms of man-hours, power, and supplies. The waste-to-stone stripping ratio is 1 to 0.8 at both operations, the powder factor is 0.29 pound of explosives per ton of stone, and daily production is 95 tons per man-shift. Both companies use crawler-mounted diesel shovels for loading, truck transportation, wagon drills, and dry screening.

OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of using electrokinetic densification to dewater Bayer process red mud, magnetic black mud prepared by pressure digestion of red mud in the presence of ferrous sulfate, and magnetic black mud formed by simu-lated Bayer digestion of Jamaican bauxite with added ferrous sulfate. Tests showed that the solids content of presettled muds could be increased from 25 pct to approximately 40 to 48 pct by gravity draining followed by electrodewatering for approximately 48 h. Electrodewatering may not be practical because of increased reagent and processing costs and because the muds must be thoroughly washed prior to electrodewatering to remove dissolved ions and decrease mud conductivities.

The coking time has considerable influence on the throughput of a coke oven, and for this reason a large number of papers dealing with the relationship between coking time and the different operating variables have been published. Although all factors known to influence the coking time have been studied, agreement has not been reached on several questions.2/3 Therefore, it appears worthwhile to evaluate any data that become available during investigations of the carbonizing properties of various coals and coal blends. Because it is expected that reports covering several different phases of this problem will be forthcoming as additional data-become available, the following study of the relationship between coking time and bulk density represents a report of progress on the overall investigation of factors influencing the coking time in slot-type ovens. The practice of including coarse coal in the blend going to the ovens to obtain increased bulk densities is well known. Similar increases have been realized by adding small quantities of oil to the coal mix. Although it would appear that such procedures provide inexpensive methods for increasing the capacity of existing coke-oven installations, Ramsburg and McGurl4/ point out that this increase is possible only if the additional coal can be carbonized in the same coking time as regularly employed without using abnormally high flue temperatures. This statement is in substantial-agreement with the position of Auvil and others5/ and implies that any change in bulk density may be accompanied by a corresponding change in coking time. On the other hand, a recent review of proposed methods for calculating the time required for carbonization6/ includes a number of equations that completely ignore the effects of variations in bulk density.

Because surface mining removes the original plant cover from the land and exposes the soil, special care is needed. Until the mined land is stabilized by revegetation, snowmelt and rainfall can pick up sediment and erode mined lands much faster than undisturbed areas. Sediment control is an important aspect of protecting the environment during mining and reclamation because without it, large amounts of sediment can clog streams, increase the risk of flooding, damage irrigation systems, harm aquatic habitat, and limit the use of water for other purposes. Stream quality can be affected many miles downstream from the mine. Before SMCRA was implemented many streams were degraded by uncontrolled sediment from mining. Sediment is controlled through careful planning and a design that incorporates a variety of measures that work together to reduce soil erosion at the mine. Disturbed areas are graded, and some areas terraced, to achieve stable slopes, reduce runoff water velocity, increase infiltration, and divert runoff into drainage channels so that it flows away from unvegetated, erodible areas. Grading along the slope contour and scarify in gun vegetated slopes with bulldozer track marks help prevent erosion by slowing down the flow of water. Runoff from haul roads is controlled by culverts and roadside ditches. Sedimentation ponds or other forms of sediment control are required at all mines to minimize the amount of sediment leaving the site.
