For each hydrocarbon, compositions are given for five fuel-to-air ratios--two lean, two rich, and one stoichiometric--at five pressures, from 1 to 20 atmospheres, and at an ambient temperature of 25° C.

Accurate determination of moisture in coals of various ranks has long been a subject of intensive investigation. Excellent reviews of methods developed over many years are given by Brown (9)4/ and, with experimental comparisons, by Goodman, Gomez, and Parry (11). As pointed out in these and other writings, one of the principal difficulties in assigning absolute merit to one or another procedure is the multiplicity of conditions under which water may exist in coal and the difficulties involved in obtaining sharp separation and distinction between these classes. Gauger (10) states: Water recoverable from coal is obtained from the following sources: (1) Decomposition of organic molecules (sometimes called combined water), (2) surface adsorbed water, (3) capillary condensed water, (4) dissolved water, and (5) water of hydration of inorganic constituents of the coal.

This report presents pertinent data on all active water-flooding projects in Washington County, Okla., and describes in detail the operation and production history of five representative floods. The flooding of partly depleted oil-bearing sands to produce petroleum that would not be recovered by other methods is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry. In 1942, two water-flooding projects in Washington County produced 35 barrels of oil daily from 90 developed acres. In March 1951, 4,000 barrels of oil was being produced daily by the injection of 58,000 barrels of water on 19 active projects covering 1,645 acres. Several projects are being extended, and new operations are being initiated. Figure 1 shows the location of the active water-flooding projects in Washington County. The yearly oil production from Washington County increased from 1,076,000 barrels in 1948 to 1,720,000 barrels in 1950, owing principally to the effects of water flooding. To March 1951, permits to flood more than 8,000 acres in Washington County had been granted by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

This report describes a new application of electroamalgam metallurgy in recovering all the zinc as refined metal from galvanizers' sal skimmings. Pure zinc was recovered by electrolysis of skimmings leach liquors in amalgam cells. The following information was gained as a result of literature studies and subsequent laboratory investigations. 1. Reports in the literature indicate that pure zinc can be recovered from chloride solutions with the aid of amalgam cells. From Europe it was reported that amalgam cells could be used to recover pure zinc and chlorine from leach liquor obtained from pyrite cinders following a chloridizing roast.

Instrumental analysis has become an indispensable tool in research and production of the rare-earth elements. This development can be attributed mainly to a combination of two factors--the marked chemical similarity of the rare-earth elements, which excludes classical methods of analysis, and the speed and accuracy of instrumental-analysis techniques. With continued improvements in methods of producing high-purity rare-earth elements, keeping pace instrumentally is becoming much more difficult. Accordingly, greater emphasis is being placed on improving instrumental limits of detection and accuracy. The methods employed most frequently for determining impurities in rare-earth elements involve use of the optical-emission spectrograph (3, 4)4/ and the spectrophotometer (9). Although numerous X-ray-emission spectrographic methods (6-8) have been developed for analyzing rare earths, these techniques have not included detection of low-level impurities. This investigation was conducted to find the precision and accuracy of X-ray fluorescence in deter-mining impurities in rare-earth oxides in the 0.01-to 1.0-percent-concentration range.

"The US Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota have developed design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. These are based on the premise that size can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is mostly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. The sampler has three stages: a respirable aerosol preclassifier, a 0.8-um aerodynamic diameter inertial impactor to collect mineral dust and a final filter to collect the diesel aerosol. Using a sample flow rate of 2 L/min and gravimetric analysis to within 0.1 mg, the measure sub-0.8 um diesel aerosol has an a-priori limit of detection of 0.3 mg/m3.A miner working in an underground coal mine with diesel equipment is exposed to a wide array of pollutants from the diesel exhaust. These include CO, CO2. NO, NO2, SO2, diesel exhaust aerosol, and a variety of hydrocarbon compounds. A quantitative definition of the health risk resulting from these exposures remains elusive. During the past several years, though, progress has been made in defining the problem.Results from epidemiological studies by Garshick et al. (1988 ), animal inhalation studies by Mauderly eta). (1986), Iwai et al. (1986), and Brightwell et al. (1986) and in vitro studies by Lewtas et al. (1986) have provided sufficient data for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH) to recommend that ""whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration"" (NIOSH, 1988). NIOSH further stated that ""though the excess risk of cancer in diesel-exhaust-exposed workers has not been quantitatively estimated, it is logical to assume that reduction in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the excess risk.""The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has also been directed by an advisory committee to establish a diesel exhaust aerosol standard and to establish regulations to minimize exposure to diesel pollutants in underground coal mines (MSHA,1988). Both reports point out the need for development of measurement techniques for respirable diesel aerosol.In the past four years, the US Bureau of Mines (Cantrell,1987 and Cantrell, et al. 1987), in cooperation with Marple, et al. (1986), at the University of Minnesota's Particle TechnologyLaboratory (PTL), have studied the use of size-selective sampling techniques to measure the mass concentration of diesel aerosol in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for use in underground coal mines.These criteria are based on the premise that size-selectivesampling techniques,can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is predominantly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. In addition to the performance criteria, this paper discusses the laboratory and field test data used to develop the criteria."

The effectiveness of induction fans in ventilating dead headings was studied in the laboratory and underground. The following fan attachments were evaluated: a. Aerodynamic nozzle b. Various lengths of vent tube c. Honeycomb airflow straightener. Various fan locations were also tested. The following conclusions were reached: a. A nozzle on a fan located against the drift wall gives the greatest jet penetration distance. b. Air straighteners are ineffective in increasing jet penetration. c. Induction fans are ineffective in removing contaminants from dead headings without sufficient main ventilation flow.

The post-World War II expansion of the Soviet petroleum industry has established the U.S.S.R. as a major oil-producing nation and has led to Russian reentry into the international petroleum trade. The rapid growth of Soviet petroleum production will allow the U.S.S.R. to displace Venezuela as the world's second largest oil-producer in 1960 and to narrow further the gap between Soviet and U.S. crude-oil production. U.S.S.R. crude oil output was only a tenth of U.S. production in 1946, but it will be more than a third at the end of 1960 and more than half in 1965. The Soviet Seven-Year Plan (1959-65) for oil provides for substantial increases in petroleum production, refining, storage, and distribution facilities. Crude oil production and primary distillation capacity are to double, considerable storage capacity is planned, and pipelines for crude oil and petroleum products are to increase threefold. According to the Soviets, the initial phases of this plan (1959 and 1960) have been completed successfully. However, this progress has been achieved with difficulty.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with floor heave. Factors affecting heave, such as in situ stress, floor characteristics, and mine geometry, are described. Floor-displacement monitoring and data analysis methods are outlined. Finally, floor heave remediation is discussed. The remedial techniques are divided into four categories: mine maintenance, supplemental support, mine structure, and techniques for multiple-seam operations. Other subjects covered in the report include laboratory and in-place testing of floor rocks, U.S. and international case studies, effects of mine layout, determination of excess horizontal pressure, and types of heave failure. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are kept to a minimum.

The Bureau of Mines has tested a low-thrust water-jet-assisted rotary drill. This work was performed to evaluate the performance of a water-jet-assisted drill operated at thrust levels typical of a handheld manual-thrust operation. Prior work by the Bureau had indicated that using water-jet assist with high-thrust drilling applications would increase drilling rate. Small-diameter holes were drilled in five different types of rock. Thrust and water pressure were varied as the drill rate was monitored. The test results indicate that drilling rates increase with increasing water pressure and thrust. The water jet has more effect on reducing the specific energy when drilling in the harder rocks than in softer rocks. Variation in drill rate for a given rock sample is attributable primarily to the material heterogeneity within the sample. One rock type (Greenwich sandstone) could not be drilled efficiently with the water-jet-assisted drill.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews hypotheses for the mechanism by which water jets reduce the specific energy of cutting for drag bits. Several of these hypotheses are shown to be inconsistent with published evidence and new observations. The notion of a limiting cutting speed, above which water jets would be incapable of rendering assistance, is shown to be improbable. The hypothesis that seems most plausible is that specific energy reductions are mainly due to the erosion of crushed materials from in front of the bit. This hypothesis leads to a prediction that, for a given rock type and jet-bit configuration at a constant depth of cut, the reduction in bit forces should be a function of dM/dx, the jet energy spent per unit length of cut. This dependence upon dW/dx is shown to be consistent with other workers? results.

When the disruption of gold mining stopped the usual source of siliceous flux needed by copper smelters , sandstone copper deposits in northern Arizona offered possibilities as a source of the flux during the war emergency . The Federal Geological Survey , while making a comprehensive survey of sandstone copper deposits , investigated the Warm Springs mining district in northcentral Coconino County in August 1943. A month later , J. H. Hedges , chief of the Tucson Division , Mining Branch , Bureau of Mines , examined the operations in connection with an application for an access road . Both investigations concluded that the district , as an emergency source of copper-bearing siliceous flux , had considerable merit , provided high prices for copper continued in effect . Early in 1944 , V. M. Ryan and S. B. Atherley requested assistance from the Bureau in exploring various deposits on their property . The Bureau / drilled 152 holes , aggregating 3,756 feet , on the Petoskey and Mackin groups of claims . This report is based upon churn drilling done under contract from October 7 to November 25 , 1944 .

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

Comprehensive field tests were made in the Gas Hills, Wyo., to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in marginal uranium deposits. The tests were made on property owned by Federal American Partners, Gas Hills, Wyo., and included seismic refraction, self-potential, induced polarization, magnetometer, electrical resistivity, airborne infrared thermal scanning, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling with electrode spacings in the range of 25 to 50 feet was most diagnostic of faults. The method is quick, cheap, accurate, and one that can be easily used by personnel employed by mining companies to detect and delineate faults.

"The amount of ash in anthracite coal interests every buyer, and occasionally produces caustic comment, but there is a lack of authentic figures that will take the subject out of the realm of opinion and agitated fancy and. give a true picture of the quality of coal actually delivered. What per cent ash is to be expected when the coal is good, and when have we a right to make serious complaint?During the past summer the Bureau of Mines took 127 samples of 1000 pounds each, representing nearly 30,000 tons of anthracite is dealers' yards in seventeen cities in the State of Massachusetts. There were three objects in view, to discover the average and the variation in amount of ash in anthracite in some easily described area; to demonstrate standard sampling methods, and to learn something about the feasibility of itinerant coal sampling. Massachusetts was selected because its principal cities could be visited in a single season. There also appeared need for demonstration of standard sampling of coal, since a coal quality law had been passed in the State, to be administered by those unfamiliar with coal sampling."

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1937 , but the total capacity to process crude oil continued to increase . These facts were ascertained in the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1 , 1938 . Several important changes were made in the census questionnaire for January 1 , 1938 . First , the basis of reckoning cracking capacity was changed from cracking stock charged to cracked gasoline produced . Although this is a definite improvement , in that it is no longer necessary to consider the yield , it is unfortunate that the data for January 1 , 1938 cannot be compared with cracking - capacity statistics since 1925. Other changes or additions included separating capacity at operating plants into that actually operating and that closed down ; collecting data on capacity added or retired during the previous year ; breaking down idle capacity according to physical status ; and separating new capacity into that built for replacement and that built to augment existing capacity . Prior to January 1 , 1938 , the total capacity of an operating plant was listed as " operating " even though some stills might have been closed down ; furthermore , the only capacity reported as being under construction was that of new plants that were being built on January 1. To make the statistics clear , the totals for the United States as of January 1 , 1938 , are given on both the old and the new bases . On January 1 , 1938 , there were 551 completed plants compared with 572 the previous year . Ten new plants were under construction on that date compared with 11 the year before . The greatest number of completed plants recorded was 632 on January 1 , 1936 ; since then , competitive conditions , particularly in the East Texas field , have been instrumental in reducing the number of small independent plants . The total crude- oil capacity of the completed refineries on January 1 , 1938 , was 4,351,151 barrels , of which 3,970 , 196 barrels ( 91 percent ) represented the capacity in actual operation and 380,955 barrels ( 9 percent ) was shut down . The " shut -down " capacity ( 199,875 barrels on the old basis ) was the lowest since pre- depression days , chiefly because numerous idle East Texas plants were removed from the list . The new method of compiling the statistics sheds considerable light on excess crudeoil capacity , which has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent years . The highest daily average crude runs to stills reached in this country was about 3,460,000 barrels in September 1937. At that time , the total crude - oil capacity was about 3,925,000 barrels . Many investigators have reported studies of size distributions for particulate solids ; usually , these have involved the fitting of size distribution data to a particular mathematical function . Such studies are of unquestioned value and have contributed much worthwhile information regarding the breakage mechanisms for a variety of brittle materials . In connection with a Bureau of Mines study of the size distribution of coke , which has been subjected to the standard American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) tumbler test , attention was focused on the relation between the 1 -inch tumbler index (usually considered to be indicative of the ability of coke to resist degradation by impact ) and the 1 /4 - inch tumbler index ( indicative of the ability to resist degradation by abrasion ) . Specifically , it was noted that for certain sets of data the correlation coefficients denoting the relation between these indexes were positive ; for other sets of data , these coefficients were negative . Preliminary consideration of this problem indicated that the usual interpretation placed on correlation coefficients was erroneous in this particular instance because the variables being correlated were necessarily related . The work described in this report was undertaken to clarify the interpretation of results of correlation studies for variables of this type .
