The Brazilian economy has always presented a strong correlation with the mineral activity. Since colonization days, due to the territorial expansion caused by the explorers search for gold, mining in Brazil became a basic sector of national economy. Currently, the Brazilian mineral sector¹ estimates a 550% production increment (Figure 1A) in the last 10 years, reaching the US$ 50 billion value, reflecting the increased global demand for raw materials from mineral origin. According to the Brazilian Constitution², mineral resources belong to the Federal State and, consequently, their exploitation must be authorized, under penalty of engendering federal crime. Furthermore, activities of this nature are prone to cause environmental degradation such as, but not limited to, deforestation, pollution, soil deterioration and water contamination. The GPEMA represents the forensics group of the Brazilian Federal Police responsible for the technical analysis of traces related to crimes against the environment and consequently, illegal mining cases.

Rapid drifting enables quicker access to orebodies, higher productivity rates and a resultant reduction in activity costs. Increased advance rates, by examination of the key components (face preparation and drilling, hole loading and blasting, scaling, mucking and support installation) in the development cycle, and optimizing these processes is a high priority for research in the Canadian mining industry. Support installation time alone is typically 36 to 46% of the total development cycle time. A reduction in support installation time or techniques and alternative scaling strategies could result in significant gains in drift development advance rates. Support Staging and hydroscaling within the drift cycle could offer alternative drift development sequences that could reduce the overall cycle time. MIRARCO?s research into the support and hydroscaling processes for rapid drift development also suggests that there are many other factors (e.g. mine ventilation services) that have a significant impact on the rate of advance. These factors should be considered to promote and manage safe and rapid drift development. Constraints to the rapid drift development processes can only be overcome by sound construction management practices. In other words, the goals of rapid drifting can be achieved by the implementation of contractor-type construction management. This paper examines various constraints and processes affecting rapid drift development and draws attention to other factors affecting safe rapid drift development.

In an underground mine rock reinforcement elements and surface support units are often exposed to conditions that make them susceptible to corrosion. These unfavourable conditions include high relative humidity, the presence of dust and various other particles in the atmosphere, splashing of water and gases from blasting and diesel equipment. The corrosion of support systems is often associated with a loss in capacity that can be a major safety and economic concern in underground mines. A support system is composed of several components such as bolts, mesh, plate, retaining nut, cable ties. Every individual component can deteriorate due to atmospheric or aqueous corrosion and consequently can damage the integrity of the support system. This paper reports the results of a 5-yr study on the loss in capacity of individual support and reinforcement components at selected underground hard rock mines. As part of this investigation corrosion coupons were installed at selected locations at participating mines. A number of these coupons were recovered at regular time intervals and analysed for any signs of corrosion and subsequently tested to quantify any loss in capacity. The testing of the corrosion coupons was complemented by similar tests on recovered mesh and friction bolt specimens from the site. The collected data have provided useful insights on the factors that contribute to the corrosion of support systems. This knowledge can aid in the selection of appropriate support strategies and a reliable assessment of the predicted useful life of a support system and the need for rehabilitation.

"This paper presents the result of the research done on the effect of temperature on the dilatancy of rocks from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC), where the South African Platinum mines are located. The BIC has higher virgin rock temperature (VRT) than the gold mines of the ‘Witwatersrand Basin Complex’. If the platinum mines advance to ultra-deep levels as the gold mines, since the Merensky Reef has been reported to extend beyond 5km, then the virgin rock temperature at 5 km below surface would be approximately 140oC. Hence, there is a need for the investigation of rock behaviour at high temperatures. Five different rock types (norite, leuconorite, mottled anorthosite, pyroxenite and chromitite) were tested in a 2600 kN servo-controlled multi-purpose triaxial testing machine. The tests were done at a constant strain rate of 5 x 10-1 S-1 and a confining pressure of 10 MPa within temperature range of 20 °C (ambient temperature) to 140 °C. The results show a general strength reduction and increasing dilation angles with increasing temperatures. The results also demonstrate that dilation angle is close to the internal friction angle at lower temperatures; however, they are greater at higher temperatures.INTRODUCTIONMany challenges are faced with increasing depth of mining in underground mines. The most obvious are heat, in-situ stresses and those associated with logistics. Issues related to underground heat have mainly focused on the side effect of heat on workers' health, increasing production costs as a result of higher cost of ventilation. The effect of increasing temperature with increasing depth on the behavior of rock has not been given much consideration. Generally, gold mines in South Africa are deeper than the platinum mines but the latter have higher temperature gradient, which makes the platinum mines to be warmer at similar mining depths. Although the study of the effect temperature on the behaviour of rock can be beneficial to both gold and platinum mines, the focus of the research is limited to the platinum mines because of their higher temperature gradient. Donoghue (2004) stated that the virgin rock temperatures (VRT) and air temperatures increase with depth, due to the geothermal gradient and auto-compression, that is, compression of air by its own weight."

Global practice in hydrometallurgical production of copper cathode by electrowinning is reviewed, based on individual plant operating data for 2018. Data from 29 plants were collected, representing 38% of world cathode copper production. Similar surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2013. This survey includes analysis of historical and current data. Evolving trends in operating conditions and performance, as well as equipment design and process technology choices, are analysed and differences in operating practices with location are assessed. Examples of recent technology and operational choices to increase productivity, improve copper quality, and decrease electrical energy consumption are discussed. Significant project expansions, particularly in Africa, and the consolidation of numerous small Chinese operations are also presented. INTRODUCTION Global trends and operating practices in copper electrowinning (EW) in 2018 are reviewed and evaluated. Similar world and African surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2013 (Robinson, Davenport, & Jenkins, 1997; Jenkins, Davenport, Kennedy, & Robinson, 1999; Davenport, Jenkins, Robinson, & Karcas, 2001; Robinson, Garbutt, & Davenport, 2002; Robinson, Davenport, Jenkins, King, & Rasmussen, 2003; Robinson, Davenport, Moats, Karcas, & Demetrio, 2007; Robinson, Sole, Sandoval, Moats, Siegmund, & Davenport, 2013). Contributing operations included sites from the USA and Mexico (9), Chile and Peru (6), Laos (1), Kazakhstan (1), and Africa (9). Despite fewer contributions compared with past experience, this survey nevertheless represents 2018 copper EW cathode production of 1.76 Mt, or about 38% of world production of 4.64 Mt (International Copper Study Group, 2017). This drop in permission to contribute is attributed to the more competitive nature of the industry and unprecedented production pressures; furthermore, several operations in Australia have shut down, while large operations that are currently commissioning or ramping up to full production in Africa and Asia declined to participate. Of the Chinese operations, which represent an increasingly important proportion of global electrowon cathode copper, particularly in Africa, only Tenke Fungurume (Democratic Republic of Congo; DRC) participated in this survey.

"HistoricalWHILE DIGGING caves and underground passages for living quarters, primitive man must have had some means of illumination. Most likely he used pieces of wood or slim bundles of reeds or grasses as torches, perhaps steeped in animal fats to give more light. If this is so, we may accept these as the first means of underground illumination. Very little was clone to improve lighting devices for many generations, but slowly there was developed a fount holding fatty oils, with a spout in which was inserted a form of wick.Actual mining. for metals first of all, was started about 3,000 B.C. Some of the old Greek and Roman records refer to the use of torches underground, and some evidence of clay lamps has been found. Candies came into use some time during the first century A.D. When coal mining began about the 14th Century in England, candles were used for illumination because of the ease of manufacturing and handling them. Open oil-lamps came into use early in the 16th century -Agricola, in his De Re .Metallica, written about 1540. pictures a miner with such a lamp. However, the expense of these was so great that candies still continued as the general means of underground lighting.Unfortunately, as miners went deeper underground, they encountered a mysterious gas which. upon coming in contact with open lights, flamed violently, resulting in explosions and accompanying loss of life. The first reference to the results of these gas explosions appeared in 1621. No help seemed to be available. The gas was given off when the coal was mined and the miners could not see without lamps. Attempts were made to use the phosphorescent glow from partly decayed fish, fish skins, and fungus, also to bring daylight clown into the workings by means of a series of • mirrors; •but these means of illumination proved to be impracticable."

"This paper outlines the development and inplementation of functional training at the Thompson Mine of Inco Metals Company, Manitoba Division. This training is an extension of similar methods implemented throughout the company to meet safety and health and productivity objectives. It consists of the orientation to the mine, induction in the basic mining skills, and specific training in drilling and other skills in the mine. Initial results indicated a positive effect on the safety performance and proficiency of the mine workforce.IntroductionThe primary mining method at the Thompson Mine is mechanized cut and fill, with secondary recovery of pillars by undercut and fill . These methods require a workforce of about 900 hourly operating employees to obtain capacity production of 6500 tons of ore per day.Historically, turnover of mine employees has been high and large numbers of new recruits are introduced to the mine every year. These men are recruited primarily in Manitoba, but also from distant areas of Canada; most of the se people have no previous mining experience.Training has always been an important component of mine operations. Mine supervisors and experienced miners have committed an appreciable amount of time and effort to training these new recruits. As well, training efforts have been directed toward upgrading the skills of experienced workers.Recently, a growing awareness of the significance of this training effort and its impact on accident frequency, productivity, turnover and other important parameters of the mine operation has led to a review of training methods. The training program described in this paper has resulted from this review."

"Smelting of copper concentrates in the flash smelter generates a flue dust stream that contains a substantial amount of copper and accumulates more than half of the arsenic input to the smelter. In view of its high copper content flue dust recirculation to the flash smelter is common practice. Globally traded copper concentrates are affected by ever increasing arsenic contents and cause an increasing circulating arsenic load in flash smelter operation. Control of the arsenic level in the smelter slag becomes a challenge. This interaction of arsenic loaded copper feedstock, need for flue dust recirculation and slag quality control call for possibilities to reduce the arsenic load of the recirculated flue dust stream.The technology of partial roasting is known from pre-treatment of copper concentrates before smelting, and gold concentrates before cyanide leaching, to remove the harmful element arsenic. The partial roasting technology can be adapted for use in the purification of the flue dust. A major challenge for flue dust treatment is its extremely fine particle size compared to usual concentrates. For this reason Outotec developed a new process, which allows handling of such fine flue dust. This process solution provides an efficient possibility to reduce the arsenic burden in copper smelter operations.The suggested process aims at reducing the arsenic load to the smelter by treating the flue dust prior to recirculation to the smelter. The presented results are based on test work in the Outotec R&D-centre in Frankfurt. It is possible to remove 80-85% of the contained arsenic and to collect it in an arsenic trioxide residue with a concentration above 90%. The final off gas contains SO2 from decomposition of sulphates that are contained in the flue dust. The off gas stream is relatively small. We assume that it is possible to combine the off gas stream with other smelter process gas streams and to treat it in an existing sulphuric acid plant. Coal is used as fuel and as reductant to reduce pentavalent arsenate to trivalent arsenite. Arsenite can be kept in gas form at temperatures above 450°C. This permits separation of a calcine stream with arsenic levels of 0.2 – 0.3%, which is recirculated to the furnace.Outotec has a wide range of roasting testing facilities from lab-scale to pilot-scale. Outotec has both capability to modify and adapt technology to specific ore or concentrate requirements, but also the necessary infrastructure in its research centers in Frankfurt and Pori to do appropriate validation tests in lab and pilot scale size plants."

A HISTOR Y of the development and application of instruments, from the simplest U gauge to a modern indicating recording controller, would contain many interesting accounts of difficulties experienced and over-come. Important as is the history of development to any branch of science, this phase will, of necessity, have to be omitted from this paper and remarks confined to the results from the use of instruments in their present form. The steel industry bas, in the past decade, become increasingly instrument minded. More than ever, economy and adherence to doser specifications are demanded, and any tool that will aid in attaining these objectives by intelligent application and use finds a ready acceptance. The open-hearth furnace bas offered a field for instruments which is different from almost any other and one in which even a small percentage saved in operating costs may represent a considerable sum. Nevertheless, this department of the steel industry has been more cautions than most others in accepting the benefits which automatic control bas given on many other types of industrial furnaces, and one is puzzled why open hearths have not more generally benefited by the application of controlling instruments. The furnace operator bas to adjust the same three main valves that control fuel, combustion air, and stack draft as on most other furnaces, with the additional regulation of reversing the furnace. He is just as aware of the importance of proper draft control and correct air volume to burn most economically the applied fuel as any good boiler-plant engineer. What, then, are the special conditions that pertain to the open-hearth furnace?

"The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. "A review of lI5 significant volcanogenic massive sulphide discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian during the past 65 years reveals that only 7% resulted from surface exploration methods aimed at depths below the effective reach of current geotechnical systems. This has been due to the relative ease of shallow discovery, resulting in the harvesting of ore deposits within 100 m of surface. This surficial layer has been more or less effectively supersaturated by routine exploration. In view of the fact that a mining district's metal content is not likely to be confined to a surficial layer, the time has come to explore the vertical dimension, prospecting for ore at depths in excess of 150 m in productive districts.Essential to this task is an understanding of the Precambrian volcanogenic ore deposit model. The deposits generally have .a tendency to be associated with the terminal phases of felsic volcanism, and to be located along certain time-stratigraphic horizons, marked by the products of volcanic exhalation. The significant massive sulphide deposits are discrete entities, ranging from the top 5% of deposits greater than 45 million tonnes in size, with a surface area of 0.30 km2, to median-sized deposits greater than 1.2 million tonnes in size with a surface area of 0.02 km2. These significant economic ore deposits range in value from $5.5 billion for the top 5% of deposits to $125 million for median-sized deposits. In terms of their frequency of occurrence, the former group has a 4% distribution and the median-sized deposits have a 15% distribution.An historical review of many of the principal Precambrian mining districts, such as Noranda and Flin Flon, shows that major tonnages are usually discovered during the initial phase of application of each new geotechnical search system, until carried to its ultimate limit of effective depth penetration. With the exception of the Noranda district, the mean depth of ore discovery in the other districts is still generally confined to within 50 m of surface.Targeting deep ore is difficult. One effective prospecting method is the detection of fracture-controlled mercury leakage haloes in outcrop (or core) above and peripheral to blind deposits. This technique has proved to be a useful pathfinder, and focuses attention on deposits buried at depths in excess of 700 m in some instances. Down-hole EM systems also promise to be effective in locating deposits previously bypassed by drilling. In addition, trend surface analysis programs of trace element geochemistry should be used as an aid to targeting ore by directing exploratory drilling along the plane of ore-hosting stratigraphy.By definition, mining districts have a proven ""favourability"" for the occurrence of ore. Discovery probabilities in these districts will be considerably enhanced if future search efforts are concentrated below a depth of 150 m, and more use is made of ""deep"" ore search systems coupled with sound geological reasoning. Deep drilling programs to a depth of800 m should initially be designed to search for the top 25% of deposits greater than 3.3 million tonnes in size, with a surface area of0.05 kmt. :a value of$310 million and a 12% frequency of occurrence; This can be accomplished for an over-all cost approximating $40,000 per drill hole. If the search depth is limited to 400 m, the over-all cost of each drill hole is $20,000, equivalent to expenditures routinely allocated to grassroots exploration drilling in the remote greenstone belts of the Precambrian. Depending on a company's objective, prospecting for deep ore offers a stimulating challange - though risky, it has its rewards."

The Huelva smelter was commissioned in 1970 coinciding with the shutdown of the old smelter in the Rio Tinto mine site. That new smelter consisted of two Momoda blast furnaces with a capacity of 500 dmtpd of concentrate. Nevertheless, soon after their start-up, it was clear that an increase in the smelting capacity was needed. After an analysis of the existing alternatives at that time, the flash smelting technology was chosen. The new Outokumpu Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF) came into operation on 18 September1975, with an initial capacity of 900 dmtpd of concentrate, using four Venturi-type burners and preheated atmospheric air. Since that date the Huelva Smelter team, together with Outokumpu (now called Outotec), have continuously improved our FSF design, process conditions and operational practices, leading to a present capacity of 3,500 dmtpd of concentrate. Since 1975, five smelting campaigns have been completed, the last ending in November 2013 with the rebuilding of the original FSF hearth. This paper describes the history of these improvements and the lessons learned.

This paper focusses on technological developments which occurred in the village of Deloro, Ontario between 1868 and 1919. These developments illustrate the manner in which improved metallurgical processes linked Ontario mineral resources to industrial expansion. Overview of Deloro The village of Deloro is in Hastings county, about 5 miles from the village of Marmora, the site of the old Marmora iron works and the more recent Marmoraton iron mine. In this area, the Canadian Shield meets the Great Lakes lowlands. The first settlement in the vicinity occurred in the 1820s and was associated with the Marmora iron works. Settlement grew around agriculture. Gold was discovered in Hastings county in 1868. Deloro - the name derives from gold - developed as a concentrated settlement in proximity to several gold mines and the related processing activities. By 1901, substantial smelting works were successfully producing gold and arsenic from local ores. The village was developing as a company town within the framework of benevolent paternalism. For reasons associated with markets and with local ore supplies, the Deloro mills were idle for a period beginning in 1902. Developments in later periods connected Deloro to world events. In 1903, silver was discovered at Cobalt, Ontario. By 1907, M.J. O'Brien, who owned mines at Cobalt, had purchased the Deloro works and was using them to process Cobalt-area ores*.

Reducing accident rates keeps getting more and more complex as the usual tools enter a curve of diminishing results. Fortunately, nothing modifies behaviour in a stronger and wider way than having a robust safety culture. On the other hand, managing cultural change is difficult and the risk of back-fire is very high, especially if the workforce does not trust our intentions. A personalized approach of well chosen and targeted actions tends to be the only yet difficult option. We have found, via experience in the metallurgy and chemistry industries, a way of preparing the company and the workforce to accept these sorts of culture changing measures faster and easier. Using company-wide changes based on workplace perception, yields the most optimal acceptance. It is based in the principle that we all use clues in our environment as guides to choose our behaviour. So, controlling the perception that our workplace generates can affect behaviour and simplify our task before it even starts. It is a matter of using the tools that other disciplines such as marketing, social engineering and architecture bring to us and adapting them to a very defined objective: Having our installations “sell” safety so that our people unconsciously believe that they must adapt to safety values in order to “do well” in said environment. INTRODUCTION After decades of improvements in accident rates, we are understandably hitting a diminishing results curve: most actions that spectacularly reduced accidents in the past (e.g., Innovation in Personal Protection equipment, adapting international standards and legislation, and innovative safety programs; Figure 1) now hardly get us the exponential gains we saw years back, regardless of the investment we put on them. Furthermore, the improvements in safety of the last 3 decades have been creating new sets of issues that start to show their face such as: By reducing accidents we can create feelings of invulnerability as we lose view of the consequences. With innovative protection equipment we increase Risk Homeostasis, meaning that people behave in a more dangerous way in order to maintain a constant level of risk in their lives (Getting closer to fire after getting better fire-proof garments for example). Too much Legislation can create a feeling of disengagement from personal responsibility. And despite improvements, we haven’t really solved the production vs safety confrontation, it is now stigmatized and less visible, yet it tends to reappear in moments of weakness.

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba's foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. "Given the high demand of copper and the lack of new high-grade deposits, low grade copper ores containing copper oxides and refractory sulfides need to be processed as well. However, in order to recover copper from refractory copper ores, the leaching performances should be improved. In this study, we investigated the effect of the mechanical activation in the leaching of copper from covellite. The influence of a mechanical treatment by planetary ball milling on leaching rate in sulfuric leaching media was evaluated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), mineral liberation analysis (MLA) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Results showed a significant increase in copper leaching from around 50%up to 100% along with an improvement of the leaching kinetics when using planetary ball milling. XRD spectra showed the disappearance of the covellite peak from (101) face, thus suggesting the amorphization of covellite associated with the use of planetary ball milling. XAFS results showed that the coordination number of Cu changed from 6 to 3, thereby confirming the effectiveness of the mechanochemical effect.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last decades, while the copper grade in copper ores has been decreasing, the concentration of impurities such as arsenic tends to increase, thus requiring for the processing of low grade copper ores. For a suitable processing of copper minerals, hydrometallurgical processes are preferable due to the lower costs, the lower environmental impact and the easier implementation (Watling, 2006). However, for an economical recovery of copper, the leaching performances must be improved.Among the recent advancements in leaching technologies, the mechanochemical activation allows for an improvement of the leaching performances by means of high-intensity grinding(Mohammadabad et al., 2016). In the first place, the improvement is the result of the dramatic decrease of particle size, which results in an increase of the mineral surface area and the consequent enhancement of leaching kinetics. Furthermore, the intense mechanical stress due to the high-intensity grinding could induce the rupture of the crystal structure producing a decrease of crystallinity. Such changes of the mineralogical structure, also known as mechanochemical effect, can lead to more leachable mineral, thereby resulting in a greater dissolution of copper. Last but not least, whereas the mineral surface might undergo passivation during leaching, the high-intensity grinding can continuously refresh the surface of the mineral, thus exposing portions of unleached bulk mineral."

The extractive industry has the potential to impact the health and well-being of workers, families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of social performance, project planning considers that activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way across the development cycle (i.e. from exploration ? post-closure). In this context, health impacts of mining can be mapped and extend over the Life of the Community and can encompass worker injury and disease, exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases, and health outcomes specific to family and community health and well-being outside the fence. To contribute to an emerging field focused on Health and the Extractive Industry, this paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining, oil and gas companies with operations in Australia and Canada. The objective of this review is to map corporate approaches to public health management across our previously developed Life-of-Mine within Life-of-Community (LOMLOC) framework in order to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments across the project cycle, as well as identify the level of prevention targeted by this investment activity (i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of detrimental health impact). With the extractive industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, this paper provides preliminary comparative information about corporate health spending by some companies in Australia and Canada. This information serves as a resource for minerals industry managers, civil society and regulators regarding current health management approaches in this sector.

Determination of the nonlinear behavior of multivariate dynamic systems often presents a challenging and demanding task. Therefore, complex geomechanics systems are an ideal area for the application of intelligent methods. Often the physical problem is controlled by nonlinear equations, conveying to the use of neural networks. Hudson, (1992a), aiming at efficient engineering modelling and design, introduced and developed Rock Engineering Systems (RES) approach, through the implementation of generic interaction matrix GIM. This approach has been used for a wide variety of rock engineering and other problems, resulting in many case studies available, which illustrate the application of RES to rock engineering problems. Considering the spectrum of the coding methods for the Generic Interaction Matrix, we suggest an objective coding approach. Among the five proposed coding GIM methods, the coding method according to the slope of Pi and Pj relation is relatively accurate, but it might be difficult or impossible to establish or estimate the exact relation of Pi vs Pj for most of the variables involved within a rock engineering system. Self organising maps, are a special type of unsupervised artificial neural networks, which can learn from complex, multidimensional data, and transform them to visually decipherable clusters. The proposed, coding of the GIM, is performed through the combined use of scatter plots produced through, (SOM), and the coding according Pi vs Pj slope. Naghadehi et al., (2013) constructed a database of worldwide experience, in open-pit mine slope stability, the selection of the principal factors was based on Hudson (1992a) who proposed an ‘atlas’ of factors affecting the stability of rock slopes. Slope classification was performed according to status of stability. The rating of the GIM matrix was completed, coupling scatter matrix produced by SOM training, and Pi vs Pj slope plot. Results refer to the identification of clusters, according to status of stability within the original multivariate data set, and the rating of the principal factors according to the dominance and interaction intensity within the open pit mines RES.

"This paper presents regional radiometric gamma-ray spectrometry maps of Syria for total radioactivity (Ur) and surficial concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU). The maps were created by merging airborne and ground-based gamma-ray spectrometric survey datasets. On the regional radiometric eU map, eU anomalies are closely related to either phosphate and/or glauconite deposits. The Ur and eU maps delineate the boundaries of three phosphate deposits, close to the Palmyrides ridge, in the northern part of the Coastal Range and Syrian Desert. Scattered occurrences of uranium mineralization in other phosphate formations are attributed to secondary chemical and physical processes, rather than primary accumulation.RÉSUMÉ Cet article presente des cartes regionales radiometriques de spectrometrie gamma de la Syrie pour la radioactivite totale (Ur) et les concentrations en surface de l’equivalent en uranium (eU). Les cartes ont ete creees en combinant des ensembles de donnees, aeroportees et au sol, de releves de spectrometrie gamma. Sur la carte regionale radiometrique eU, les anomalies eU sont etroitement reliees aux gisements de phosphate et(ou) de glauconite. Les cartes Ur et eU delimitent les limites de trois gisements de phosphate, a proximite de la crete des Palmyrides, dans la partie nord de la chaine cotiere et du desert de Syrie. Des dispersions de mineralisation d’uranium dans d’autres formations de phosphate sont attribuees a des procedes chimiques et physiques secondaires, plutot qu’a une accumulation primaire."
