Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was described in a paper in Copper/Cobre 03. Four years on, the technology is operating at a full scale production facility.Hindustan Zinc Limited expanded their capacity by installing the AUSMELT process. The process proceeds through smelting, slag reduction, slag cleaning and holding stages sequentially in the same vessel, resulting in widely varying off gas characteristics. The off gas is suitable for treatment is a conventional acid plant for a modest proportion of the day, but at other times produces off gas too high in S02 to be discharged to atmosphere. Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was identified as a means of effectively removing the S02 down to low levels from the off gas during all stages of the pyrometallurgical process. Furthermore, the Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing System Technology produces high purity S02 that allowed for the captured S02 to be directed to an existing acid plant, avoiding the capital cost of new acid making capacity.

"Cobalt is regarded as technology enabling metal among the less abundant metals found in the earth crust. Electrodeposition of the metal from aqueous sulphate solutions is the preferred technology for its commercial production. Certain additives are added in the electrolytic bath during electrodeposition for the production of uniform, smooth and bright deposits of cobalt metal with higher current efficiencies and lower energy consumptions. A detailed investigation has been carried out to determine the effect of additive Sodium octyl sulphate (SOS) on the electrodeposition of cobalt. The results indicated that the additive apart from increasing the current efficiency enhanced the quality of cobalt electrodeposits. A maximum current efficiency of 98.4% was achieved at 10 mg/L SOS. The presence of SOS in the electrolytic bath did not result in any noticeable change in the crystal orientation of the cobalt electrodeposits except at higher concentrations (50 g/L) of the additive. Scanning electron micrographs indicate that smooth, compact and uniform deposits of cobalt were obtained at 10 mg/L of the additive beyond which there is detoriation in the quality of deposits. Polarisation of the cathode was seen in the presence of SOS. The effect of SOS on the electro kinetic parameters: Tafel slope (b), transfer coefficient (a) and exchange current density (I0) has also been investigated.INTRODUCTIONCobalt is recognised to be a strategic metal among the various base metals, owing to its numerous applications in various industries. Cobalt as a metal finds its use in the preparation of rechargeable batteries, as an alloying component in the manufacture of space craft and jet engines, as a drying agent for paint varnishes, ground coats for porcelain enamels and in the manufacture of the catalysts for the petroleum and chemical industries (Davis, 2000). Although there is a huge demand of the metal the supply of the metal is limited due to its scarcity in the earth crust. The metal comprises of only 0.02% of the earth’s crust for which the metal is recovered from various ores of nickel and copper as a byproduct (Hawkins, 1998). The present day techniques for cobalt production includes mostly hydrometallurgical methods which are preferred over the earlier used pryometallurgcial methods carried out for the metal production. Almost 70% of the world’s cobalt produced currently is from hydrometallurgical techniques in which electrodeposition of the metal from aqueous solutions is the final step for metal production (Verney, 1988). The most preferred route for electrodeposition of cobalt metal involves a sulphate medium (Das and Subbaiah, 1984; Lenthall and Bryson, 1997; Sharma et al., 2005)."

"ABSTRACTA brief background on in-situ testing of mine backfill, as well as pressuremeter testing is briefly described, and results from an in-situ testing on paste backfill are presented. A series of self-boring pressuremeter tests were done from the top of a backfilled stope in an underground mine. The tests were conducted along a 20-metre vertical line in the centre of the stope. Some 14 tests were performed along this depth. The instrument used was a Camkometer built by Cam Insitu, Cambridge. The instrument proved to be efficient and reliable for underground testing in a cemented paste backfill. The testing program was conducted within the planned schedule with a high success rate. The test done in this study permitted the measurement of paste backfill strength, stiffness and in-situ horizontal stress within the backfill. L’essai pressiométrique est décrit succinctement et des résultats d’une campagne d’essai dans un remblai en pâte sont présentés. Un programme d’essais au pressiomètre auto-foreur a été réalisé à partir du sommet d’un chantier remblayé sous terre. Les essais ont été réalisés le long d’un ligne vertical d’environ 20 mètres pour un total de 14 mesures. Le Camkometer de la firme Cam Insitu de Cambridge a été utilisé. "At the San Manuel mine (Arizona, USA), in-situ copper leaching of a copper porphyry deposit was carried out from 1986 to 1999 during underground and open-pit mining. In 1993–1994, well¬field testing of the supergene zone, composed primarily of chrysocolla and copper-rich clay minerals, led to estimates that 52% of the acid-soluble copper (ASCu) could be recovered during in-situ leaching; however, the actual recovery from zone 6, which had the longest leach history, was approximately 42%. Comparing drillcore assay data from holes drilled before and after leaching also indicated an approximate recovery of 42%. The last few years have been eventful ones for Manitoba in connection with mineral development. Perhaps the past year has been the most important of all. It is therefore a suitable time to review the mining situation in the Province. In order to obtain, in the following paper, a proper set ting from which to discuss the trend of recent developments, a brief review of the story of mining will first be given. This will include a summary of a few of the outstanding facts regarding prospecting, discovery, and operations in the several known metalliferous areas of the Province. Following this will come a more detailed description of activities during the past year or two. Special attention will then be paid to the outstanding enterprises, such a~ those associated with the names of Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, and Central Manitoba, names which have been attracting the attention of the mining world to Manitoba. And last of all will be presented a brief summary of mineral production, which, so far, has largely been credited to non-metallics. HISTORICAL To aid a proper comprehension of the recent trend in mining, it is well not to lose sight of the history of development in the different metalliferous areas in Manitoba. This Province seems throughout to have been more or less dependent on mining interest excited by discoveries in the neighbouring province of Ontario. The first interest came as an effect of the Lake of the Woods mining boom, when small adjacent parts of Manitoba were prospected. Several discoveries were made, but no mining industry resulted.

Umicore and MWH jointly demonstrated that mechanical dewatering of goethite and neutralised tailings significantly increased the life of a 30 ha tailings pond and improved the operation of the pond. Umicore operates one of its zinc production plants in Balen, Belgium. As part of its production process, an excess of neutralised and goethite¬containing tailings is generated. These have historically been stored inside large lined ponds. As the storage area of the current goethite pond was nearing its capacity, Umicore studied the potential for an extension to the existing embankment. However, this extension would face intense regulatory scrutiny, because the environmental and safety impacts were considered important. Together with Umicore, MWH suggested and investigated an alternative treatment approach consisting of mechanical dewatering prior to storage. A feasibility study was prepared where wet storage was compared to dry storage. Differences in safety risks, environmental impacts and economic costs were outlined. The study demonstrated that the life of the tailings pond could be increased from 6 to 22 years, seriously reducing the environmental impacts and safety risks at no significantly higher cost than would have been incurred with the continued operation of the existing pond. The results of the study are presented in this paper.

Abstract-Gahnite, a zinc-bearing spinel, is a resistate mineral that may be used as an indicator mineral of polymetallic deposits in high-grade metamorphic terrain. The Ontario Geological Survey recently completed surficial mapping and sampling programs in the Separation Lake area of northwestern Ontario and Kinniwabi Lake area of northeastern Ontario in which gahnite was recovered from samples of surficial sediments. Ternary plots of the composition (ZnO, MgO, FeO[t]) of gahnite recovered from these surficial studies reveal three distinct groups: Group 1 is characterized by low (< 1 wt%) MgO values; Group 2 by higher (>1 wt%) MgO values; and Group 3 by higher FeO(t) values than Groups 1 and 2. The composition of in situ gahnite recovered from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization, Zn-rich Sedex-type mineralization and peraluminous rare-element mineralized granite and pegmatite also was determined. The composition of the gahnite obtained from surficial samples was compared with that of in situ material. Gahnite from the peraluminous rareelement granite and pegmatite overlapped very well with surficial gahnite of Group 1. Gahnite from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization and Sedex-type mineralization overlapped well with surficial gahnite of Group 2. These results suggest that determination of gahnite composition in indicator mineral surveys may be useful in exploration programs when assessing the mineral potential of a region.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.

"Goldcorp’s Hoyle Pond mine has recently completed several projects which have impacted the overall ventilation system. The project includes extending the Fresh Air Raise (FAR) to depth, development of a new Return Air Raise (RAR), and the installation of new sensors and ventilation controls throughout the mine. Two years after the completion of #2 Winze, the mine is ramping up its ore production to 1,300 tpd (up from 1,100). To ensure safe and profitable production, a reliance upon technology has been needed to provide the required ventilation to the work areas according to the mine plan. To systematically assess the mine’s ventilation in real-time, a significant increase in remote monitoring was required. This included installing additional flow, pressure, temperature and gas sensors. The first step in upgrading the existing monitoring was to purchase airflow and differential pressure monitors and install them in key areas of the mine. This paper presents the process of expanding the monitoring capability at Hoyle Pond mine, the selected equipment and the results of the implementation. The intended goal was to improve safety while minimizing capital and operation costs. The monitors were installed in strategic locations to provide immediate feedback on the impact of changes to the primary ventilation airflows. Comparing the available sensor technologies, installing them and systematically monitoring the ventilation served as a first step towards developing a mine wide Ventilation Control System. In addition, the initial state of the monitoring and control system, with final results and the chosen solution for the mine site, are presented. INTRODUCTION The Hoyle Pond mine is located in the City of Timmins, within the Porcupine mining district, Ontario, which has produced more than 70 million ounces of gold since 1910. Currently, approximately 60% of Porcupine Gold Mines gold production comes from the Hoyle Pond underground mine. Mechanized cut and fill and long-hole mining methods are used to extract the ore. The remainder of the ore comes from the Hollinger Open Pit mine. The Dome Underground mine ceased operations in 2017. Hoyle Pond is currently mining at 1820 meters below the surface and plans to go deeper. The average dry-bulb as wet-bulb temperature underground varies according to the depth and surface conditions which has extremes of –40°C in winter to +30°C in summer. The total airflow volume pushed down from surface is 240 m3/s to accommodate the diesel-powered equipment needed for normal operations. In order to improve the quality of air underground a program has been implemented to use diesel particulate filters, starting with the truck fleet and 6-yard scoops, followed by the intention to implement the rest of the functional diesel-powered equipment and eventually move to electric equipment."

THE Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, is engaged in the mining and concentrating of copper ores, and, incidentally, in the mining of coal and the production of electric power. The Company has been engaged in these various operations both on the mainland of British Columbia and on Vancouver island for the past forty-five years. This paper will attempt to cover their present operations in the Similkameen mining district of southern interior British Columbia. GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT The Interior Plateau in southern British Columbia ranges in elevation from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. In the vicinity of Princet0n, a depression in the Plateau forms a well defined basin which is floored with a series of nearly flat-lying Tertiary sediments containing some workable seams of lignite. From this basin, the upland surface rises gradually t0ward the south, from an elevation of 2,000 feet at Princet0n to 4,000 feet at Copper mountain, and 6,000 feet in the upper parts of the Similkameen basin, where it merges into the rugged and diversified t0pography of the Cascade system, with glacier inhabited peaks rising to over 9,000 feet. The valleys of Similkameen river and its tributaries are wide, having flaring sides and gentle slopes, and are separated one from another by subdued rounded spurs, of which Copper mountain is typical. The drainage of this district is taken care of by Similkameen river and its larger tributaries, such as Pasayten river, and Wolfe, Friday, and Whipsaw creeks. The name Copper mountain is applied to a gently arched, nearly flat-topped spur between the deep valley of Similkameen river to the west and the shallower valley of Wolfe creek tO the east. The mountain is appro-priately named from the number of copper deposits occurring on its sides and summit, some of which have been developed int0 an important producer, known as the Copper Mountain mine.

"Mining OperationsOre will be mined by open pit techniques. Because of the high grade of the deposit and the low strip ratio, mining rates are small relative to most other open pit operations.The ore deposit is located in the valley of the main fork of Red Dog Creek. The bulk of the deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the creek, but mineralization does traverse the creek in both the north and east directions.Erosion has exposed the orebody in a number of locations, and has resulted in oxidation of the mineralization closer to the surface. Although much of this oxide material is very high grade, it leaches readily and, at least in the initial phases of the operation, will be stockpiled and not treated in the concentrator.During construction, 2.3 million mt. (2.5 million st.) of overburden and waste will be stripped from the orebody to expose ore for initial operations. Competent non-mineralized waste will be used to build roads and waste dumps, but the bulk of material removed consists of oxide or ice-rich soils and weathered rock which is not suitable for construction.The annual ore mining rate will be 1.9 million mt. (21. million st.). The strip ratio will start off at 1.2 to 1, falling to 1.0 to 1 by year 5 and ultimately to 0.8 to 1.Bench heights are set at 7.6 m (25 ft). Pit slopes will vary depending on the material present in the wall. The slope, through competent waste and the sulphide package, was set at 45 degrees. This is flattened to 26 degrees (i.e. 2: 1) through overburden and Upper Kivalina shales. The Kivalina Shales are an ice-rich shale whose carbonate matrix has been leached out and which exhibits little or no strength as it thaws. In addition, a 100 ft containment berm will be left in the wall below overburden and Kivalina."

The growing need to measure the extent of weathering of coking coal in storage and in transit prompted the comparison of the dilatation of coking coal on heating, which is known to be a sensitive index of oxidation, with the composition and volume of the gases produced by a mild pyrolysis of the same coal. It was found that the pyrolysis method had the advantage in that it could be used to study coking coals in advanced stages of oxidation, when the swelling properties had been largely destroyed. Of the various constituents in the pyrolysis gas, the most sensitive indication of coal oxidation was the volume of carbon monoxide evolved per gram of coal. For the coals examined, this index appeared to be at its best when the temperature of pyrolysis was approximately 35oC.

"In the present study effect of grinding media on flotation of two mineral systems have been investigated, viz. sulphide minerals (including a pure chalcopyrite and pyrite mineral, and two different base metal sulphide ores), and oxide minerals (quartz, hematite and cassiterite). It was shown that mild steel media milling produced lower recoveries in the case of chalcopyrite and pyrite, as compared to the case of milling using ceramic media. For oxide minerals, the effects of using mild steel media as opposed to ceramic media were not as significant as was for the sulphides, although, after mild steel milling, at acidic pHs their recoveries were significantly reduced. For two base metal sulphide ores, viz. Nkomati and Dexing ores, the differences resulting from different milling media , although marginal, were opposite for each of these ores.For oxide minerals XPS showed that oxides and hydroxides of iron (e.g. FeOOH) adsorbed on the surfaces of the minerals. In the case of the Nkomati ore, adding Fe2+ or F3+ ions after milling with chrome steel media resulted in reduced talc (gangue) recovery, but increased water recovery and reduced concentrate grades. Further investigations are currently in progress to examine the Fe ions effect on the talc surfaces and froth properties.INTRODUCTIONGrinding of ores is necessary to liberate the valuable minerals from its gangues to allow for their selective recovery during mineral processing such as flotation. The grinding process inevitably involves contact of the ores with the surface of the grinding device and the grinding media. Accompanied by grinding, several phenomena can occur including the grinding medium wear, formation of precipitated species on the ore surfaces, chemical reaction, galvanic effects, changes in the Eh of solution, etc. There is a considerable body of literature on the differences observed in the flotation of various ores after milling using various grinding media. Laboratory studies have used balls or rods made from mild steel, ceramic, stainless steel or chrome steel to investigate the effects of different grinding media on mineral flotation. It is found that the interactions between the ore and the grinding environment can affect flotation separation of sulphide (Wei and Sandenbergh, 2007; Bruckard, 2011), oxide (He et al., 2014) and carbonate minerals (Song, 2009 and 2010). For example, mild steel milling produces relatively high concentrations of Fe ions in the pulp, affecting the recoveries of minerals compared to the case of ceramic media. On the other hand, the stainless steel media or chrome media are reported to be beneficial to the recovery of sulphides, when compared to the cases of using mild or carbon steel media (Rey and Formanek, 1960; Peng et al., 2003a,b; Huang and Grano, 2006; Bruckard, 2011). It is not clear, however, whether these Fe ions may affect the surface properties of the minerals involved or the general pulp/froth behaviour and hence their floatability. In addition, in the study of an low-S PGE ore carried out by Miettunen et al. (2012), forged media grinding in the CO2 atmosphere led to the highest Pt and Pd grades and recoveries, but the high chrome grinding media gave lower flotation recoveries than those using the forged media."

"The wide interest in the application of the geochemistry of mercury to mineral exploration is leading to the continued development of a variety of analytical methods for the determination of nanogram quantities of this element. The various methods have different degrees of reliability, sophistication and portability. In this investigation, two simple portable instruments were used in geochemical prospecting surveys -an ultra-violet absorption instrument and a similar one modified with gold for the removal of interfering substances. The results show the application of the method to the determination of mercury in soils of different organic content, and in rocks, sulphides and air."

Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

The roles of the company&apos;s Strategic Technology Solutions team and the Barrick Technology Centre are discussed within the context of their responsibilities within Barrick&apos;s Operations Support group. The paper will present an overview of the development of the technology centre from the former Placer Dome Research Centre to its current form supporting strategic technology, capital projects, and operating sites. Novel approaches to research and development will be presented as well as an overview of some of the technologies developed from bench-scale to pilot-scale, and beyond.
