What is the meaning of the Life of a Mine (LOM) if that mine results in a requirement for water treatment in perpetuity? ‘In perpetuity’ is of course a duration with no relationship to a Life-of-Mine or what might rightly be regarded by external stakeholders as a fair and reasonable post-mine recovery period. It exceeds the life span of investors, mine managers and governments, indeed even of capital markets as we know them, and of corporate and individual memories.In mine and mine closure planning, decisions are usually based at least to a significant extent on traditional economic analysis underlain by discounted cash flows (DCF). For investments in income-producing facilities, such as mining development and equipment, and ore-processing plant and equipment, this analysis reflects commercial reality and allows for comparison of competing investments. However, for environmental and social infrastructure, the same analysis using the same input parameters, especially the discount rate applied to cash flows, can lead to a bias against the adoption of best practices for non-investor stakeholders. This paper discusses the implementation and potential limitations of the method for estimating sampling and analytical errors of multiple source mine output blended into a shipping product, described by Everett and Ziegelaar (2010). The practice of quality measurement varies between iron ore miners. The common objective is to monitor effective resource utilisation and control of product quality to customers. A flow diagram is given presenting the various options used by iron ore mine operators and the merits of the different options are discussed.

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd since October, 1960. Since the introduction, the.: number of thickeners in use in the continu-ous thickening stage has been reduced from eight to three; there has been an increase of 25% in throughput and a reduc-tion of solids in.:thickener overflow from 3-4 gòpòl . solids to 0.5 g.p.l. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0.25. lb SEPARAN, NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3% in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of SEPARAN NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution prior to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strip-pings from 47 to 71 hours. However, there has been a slight increase the lead content of the cadmium-metal produced.

The amount of land subjected to coal surface mining in the United States has been reported at 1, 302, 000 acres (1). Latest National Coal Association estimates (1968) show that about 65, 000 acres are affected annually in the production of 186, 000, 000 tons of coal. Peabody Coal Company affects approximately 9500 acres annually in the ten States in which we are presently operating. Surface mining at Moura, Australia was begun in February 1961. In Marcy 1963, the Marion 7900 dragline with 35 cubic yard bucket went into operation and in 1967 the Marion 8900 dragline with a bucket capacity of 130 cubic yards was put into operation. In addition a third dragline, a 480W was added in 1969. It carries a 15 cubic yard bucket and is used to work areas that are too small to justify movement of the larger machines, In 1969 the Moura surface mine produced 3, 002, 774 short tons, and in 1970 3, 418, 933 short tons.

The direct method of gas content determin ation developed by McCulloch and Diamond of the U.S.B.M. has been adapted to estimate the gas content of coal seams from slim exploration borecores in the Southern Coalfield. Emphasis has been placed on the measurement of this parameter without the physical destruction of the core which is required for subsequent chemical analysis. In field and laboratory equipment is simple and inexpensive. It enables the determination of lost and desorbed gas from a fresh geological core. Residual gas is not measured but is considered to be relatively low and of no consequence in ventilation considerations. Results to date show good correlation with those obtained from underground face samples. Gas contents from the mined seams varying from 2 m3/tonne to 14 m3/tonne have been measur- ed with this apparatus. Gas desorption characteristics of South Coast coals have been found to closely follow exponential mathematical Models.

With the aim of producing a concentrate with silica content lower than 1.0 per cent SiO2, laboratory experiments were conducted using a sample of the final concentrate from the Samarco iron ore flotation plant (mechanical cells circuit). The sample contained 3.08 per cent SiO2. This sample was split in two size ranges: >105 ¦m and 2. The >105 ¦m fraction, representing 23.3 per cent of the initial mass, was re-ground to 100 per cent 2 content were obtained. Considering the mass proportions of the two size fractions, the calculated silica content of the combined concentrate was 0.68 per cent, which is considered satisfactory for the objective of this investigation. The major reasons for the higher (0.90 per cent) silica content of the concentrate from the coarse fraction are the presence of silicon in the lattice of goethite and the presence of residual silicious slimes in the pores of porous hematite.

Mining companies worldwide have an increasing interest in restoring indigenous ecosystems following mining. Low levels of plant nutrients and organic matter, pH extremes, heavy metals, physically challenging media, and difficult climatic conditions all hinder revegetation of steep rockdump slopes. Our techniques use colonising pioneer plants to accelerate natural soil development and plant succession processes on minesites that are difficult to revegetate with locally sourced plants by traditional techniques. Suitable treatments and pioneer species must first be identified for each rocktype. Field trials at the Stockton Coal Mine in Buller have shown that successful acceleration of moss and pioneer plant establishment is possible. Best plots showed a mean of 15 per cent moss cover and 3.3 per cent vascular cover after 12 months compared with 0.1 per cent and nil respectively for controls. Techniques have been extended to field-scale trials, using hydroseeders and dryblowers. These techniques show potential for practical land rehabilitation, whilst conserving local biodiversity.

Autocompression and virgin rock tempera ture have a marked influence on the ventilation of the lower levels at North Broken Hill Limited N.S.W. To maintain comfortable working temp- eratures without penalty to working hours, increase in airflow or the cooling of the work area is necessary. The use of refrigerated air cooling is discussed. Ventilation of underground mining opera tions at North Broken Hill Limited is accomplished by downcasting air through No.3 shaft, the main operating shaft, 1581 m deep, with additional air through No.1 shaft (542 m) 2 and No.2 shaft (978 m), both no longer opera- tional shafts. Air is upcasted through No.3 ventilation shaft which is 4.9 m diameter and concrete lined, from the No.28 level (1140 m) to the surface. On the surface level of this shaft is a horizontally mounted Richardson 4800 mm diameter single stage axial flow fan with adjustable pitch rotor blades.

In hard rock mining, large-scale bulk mining methods such as block or panel caving (BC/PC) and sublevel caving (SLC) typically generate significant surface deformations such as subsidence. Surface deformations need to be considered in the project evaluation and planning stages of cave mines, for example, planning and location of critical underground mine planning infrastructure such as portals, haulage and vent shafts, access roads, or potential damage to existing infrastructure, changes to surface water management, waste dump, stockpile and tailings dam stability, and environmental impacts. Assessing the impact and risks associated with subsidence is a key component in robust mine planning and operations management.

The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. This extended abstract and associated presentation provide a series of real examples of the complex interactions between the numerous input parameters, both geological and mathematical, that are required for resource estimation. Many of these parameters can contain a large degree of uncertainty at the initial resource stage. The resource tonnages and grades at economic cut offs of some types of deposits are relatively robust to these initial uncertainties while others exhibit significant sensitivity. In some cases, changes in parameters can result in counter-intuitive outcomes. Grades and confidence levels are inseparable; as the parameters change the confidence changes and so does the grade estimate. The extended abstract and associated presentation also discuss the question of whether or not a single solution is still an acceptable outcome for an estimate or if even a set of simulations based on a single fixed set of parameters is acceptable.CITATION: Kentwell, D, 2018. Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.During the environmental impact assessment and project development phase, Nautilus completed a number of hydrodynamic modelling exercises in order to predict the nature, volume and extent of the plumes likely to be generated by the sea floor mining tools and return water discharge at the sea floor.The modelling was conducted using the suspended sediment fate model (SSFATE), developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and RPS APASA engineering consultants. The SSFATE model was originally developed in order to predict and manage dredging plumes, and has since been adapted for deep ocean sea floor mining. The model uses a Lagrangian approach to remove the limitations of grid resolution, and simulates far-field effects of sedimentation plumes by assuming that the average transport and turbulence associated with currents are dominant over the initial turbulence at the release point. The random walk procedure utilised in the model tracks particle size classes as they disperse and settle, and also takes into consideration any re-suspension that may occur following settlement (RPS APASA, 2014).CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. HukkiÆs law is an empirical law, which does not take into account several events of energy loss during the fragmentation processes. Since experimental results are very difficult to obtain, for a large range of fragment sizes, the verification of the law is very difficult. The relation between fractures and fragmentation processes with fractal geometry was proposed some decades ago. Empirical laws known in this context show basic features of fractal geometry, mainly self-affinity and power law behaviour. Thus, in this work a model was developed to simulate the fragmentation process and to check the relation between energy consumption and fragment sizes. The model is represented on a regular lattice. Links can represent pathways for fracture processes. The events of fragmentation have energy given by a probability distribution function. In the model there is no mass loss. Propagation of fractures occurs as self-avoiding random walks on the regular lattice.

The shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass in sublevel caving were investigated in this study. The paper first reviews the main factors affecting the shape and characteristic of caved ore mass in sublevel caving and then through the experimental blast testing with cement-sand concrete models, the shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass were found out. The experimental results indicated that the shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass was similar to that of the drawn loose body. This finding presented a new perspective for the future study on the ore drawing theory and on the optimisation of structural parameters of sublevel caving. The structural parameters must meet the principle that the shape of the drawn body is in consistency to the shape of caved ore mass.

Most developing projects face a range of technical and non-technical challenges, and examination of development histories can potentially provide insights into improved approaches to project development. The Kestanelik project in the Canakkale region of Western Turkey was acquired by Chesser Resources Ltd in 2008. Turkey is a significant and growing source of gold production, with sector participation by both domestic and international companies. While the broad ranges of challenges faced by developing projects is well known, there are relatively few case studies in which the range of technical, environmental, social and governance challenges are presented in a single contribution. Recent studies of undeveloped complex orebodies have particularly shown the extent to which environment, social and governance (ESG) complexities contribute to project delays and failures. The Kestanelik project faced a full range of technical and ESG complexities, and provides an illustrative example of the associated challenges. CITATION: Valenta, R, 2018.
