The Ranger Uranium Mine is surrounded by a World Heritage National Park. The strict environmental controls under which the mine operates are based on scientific and social requirements. Release of non-process storm runoff water to the Magela Creek during flood discharge and under controlled conditions has been identified as Best Practicable Technology for the operation of the water management system. Social and political factors have limited this release to a wet season with an Annual Exceedance Probability of one in ten. The first-generation trigger mechanism was based on a percentile analysis of monthly rainfall. The second-generation trigger is based on cumulative monthly volume increase in the retention ponds and is considered to be more applicable to the operation of the mine water management system.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Frieda River Project is located in the north-west of Papua New Guinea. The target commodities for a bulk mining operation are copper and gold associated with a large felsic porphyry system. The project comprises a series of deposits, with the Horse-Ivaal-Trukai (HIT) being the largest. It also includes the adjacent smaller Koki and Ekwai deposits.Previous resource estimates for the HIT were made using 14 separate mineralised domains based on structure, copper grades, lithology and alteration. H&S Consultants (H&SC) has revisited the deposit and concluded that a simpler methodology could be used for resource estimation without using wireframes as hard domain boundaries. This conclusion is based on reviewing all the available geological data combined with geological and resource experience of porphyry deposits.It is generally acknowledged that porphyry deposits form by diffusion of mineralising fluids through the host lithologies, meaning that sharp boundaries are unlikely unless these fluids encounter specific physical or chemical boundaries. It is important to prepare a comprehensive geological model prior to attempting resource estimation as it forms the framework for the estimates; however, not all geological features may be relevant to the distribution of mineralisation and there can be a tendency to overcomplicate the estimation process by using too many domains. Unless a hard boundary can be identified consistently and unequivocally, it is generally better not to use a boundary in that location.H&SC completed unconstrained models with no top-cutting using both a simple flat search ellipse and a steep search ellipse to generate global resource estimates reported within a predetermined pit shell at a 0.2 per cent copper cut-off. Both outcomes are within 10 per cent for the tonnes, contained copper tonnes and gold ounces compared to the constrained resource estimate. The slight differences are most likely due to the different search strategies, but also indicate the robustness of the unconstrained modelling approach.CITATION:Queen, L D and Tear, S J, 2015. Slag foaming is an important control item in the process of refining molten steel. This study aims to investigate the factors controlling slag foaming by observing the bubble formation behaviour resulting from the chemical reaction between iron oxide and Fe-C alloy in the slag. In this study, 0.06 g of Fe- C alloy was introduced at the bottom of a BN crucible, and 6.0 g of slag (SiO2:CaO:Fe2O3 = 40:40:30) was placed on top of it. The crucible was positioned inside an infrared image heating furnace, where the temperature was rapidly raised to 1370°C at a rate of 1000°C/min in a nitrogen stream, and then held at that temperature for a predetermined time before rapid cooling. Following rapid cooling, the internal structure of the sample was examined using a high-resolution X-ray CT device. The spherical equivalent volume was calculated based on the number of observed bubbles and their equivalent circle diameter. Additionally, the relationship between the volume ratio of small bubbles in the slag volume and the distance from the bottom of the crucible was determined, along with the calculation of bubble density and volume ratio. Under various experimental conditions, numerous bubbles with equivalent circular diameters ranging from 200 to 300 μm were consistently observed. The density and volume fraction of bubbles with circular equivalent diameters between 200 and 500 μm showed a tendency to increase as the distance from the bottom of the crucible increased. Bubbles with equivalent circular diameters of 500 μm or more consistently exhibited lower bubble densities, regardless of their height within the crucible. The formation of larger bubbles is attributed to a decrease in iron oxide concentration within the slag as the reaction progresses. However, this is believed to be due to their higher buoyancy, resulting in shorter residence times within the slag and a reduction in the number of encapsulated bubbles.

The load capacity of a friction bolt has long been regarded as 4 t/m of embedment for ground support design analysis and supported by in situ pull test results. In recent years, the authors have observed lower pull test results or inconsistent results which were rarely sighted in the early 2000s. The lower pull test results indicated in some cases that reliable friction bolt capacity (≥90 per cent of results) is closer to 3 t/m of embedment with some geotechnical engineers adjusting the ground support parameters in the design work accordingly. This can be in contrast with other mines which reliably obtain 4 t/m (or greater) using the same suppliers bolt in similar ground conditions. This raised several questions: • What is the effect of poor installation (bolt twist or bolt hole deviation)? • Does the performance of friction bolts vary in different rock masses? • Does bolt performance vary between suppliers? • What effect does increased jumbo feed/percussion/rotation settings have? • Have the bolt dimensions or steel strip width changed? • Have the physical bolt properties changed? • Have the steel properties changed? This paper was aimed to answer as many of these questions as possible and discuss each variable in detail. This project included friction bolt trials at various mine sites across Australia, multiple friction bolt manufacturers, steel manufacturers and laboratory analysis. The paper also includes discussion on what the authors consider best practice for pull testing. It should be noted, the terms ‘friction stabiliser’ and ‘split set’ used in this paper are used in a generic manner and is not linked to any specific ground support supplier. Whilst its acknowledged within the industry the term split set and friction stabiliser is used interchangeably, the authors acknowledge that the term split set is a trademark of Split Set Mining Systems and has been used in context in this paper.

The Jianchaling gold deposit is located about 1200 km south west of Beijing in central China. The deposit was discovered in 1988 by the Northwestern Geological Exploration Bureau (711 Exploration Team). Sino Gold Limited, an Australian based company, developed the mine in 1998 and is currently operating a 1000 t per day underground mine, producing about 80 000 ounces of gold per year. The pre-mine resource for Jianchaling was 1.6 million tonnes at 9.85 g/t gold. The deposit occurs within the east-west trending Mesozoic Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt formed during the Yanshanian Orogeny. In the Jianchaling region, gold mineralisation is primarily hosted by regional west-northwest to east-southeast striking faults, the most important of which, the reverse sinistral F145 fault, hosts the larger gold deposits including Jianchaling. At the mine scale, the most important zone of mineralisation is localised within a shallowly north dipping dilation on the F145 fault. Proterozoic dolomite forms the hangingwall and serpentinite and talc schist the footwall to the fault. Within the footwall, serpentinite is the most important host rock to mineralisation. Initial alteration involves replacement of serpentine to dolomite ¦ pyrite, talc to ankerite ¦ pyrite, and magnetite and chromite to pyrite, the latter locally through a transitional hematite phase. Proximal to feeder structures, the carbonate minerals have undergone partial dissolution and replacement to quartz. Gold is related to arsenean pyrite and marcasite rimming and replacement of early-formed pyrite, and associated with iron release during the processes of dolomitisation, silicification and carbonate dissolution.

The oil crisis had repercussions throughout the world and most importantly on mining, where the drive to reduce the use of liquid fossil fuel led directly to the appearance and subsequent growth in the design of mobile crushers in late 1970s early 1980s, which heralded a new era in both quarrying and mining. Even though mobile crushing has now become common, even preferred in the quarrying industry, this has not been the case in mining. This paper looks at why, in spite of the initial optimism, this technology has yet to gain full acceptance in the mining industry. The paper examines some of the problems that have been encountered in the past and offers suggestions as to how they can be avoided by applying the appropriate technology. It then takes a look at the successful application of the semi-mobile in-pit crushing system used by Italian Thai Development Company (ITD), on the Mae Moh Phase 5 contract and examines how the techniques used successfully there could be applied to the industry at large.

It is well known that the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) can only be operated efficiently under choke feeding conditions in which a material bed is built up between the rollers to ensure interparticle breakage. By increasing the fines amount in the material bed up to a specific level with the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained which results in compact flakes including more fines. Extensive test work has been carried out with an industrial HPGR unit grinding cement clinker in a cement plant in Turkey. During the test work the recycling load of the circuit was changed to achieve different ratios to the fresh feed rate in order to identify the effect of the recycling load on the circuit performance. Six different tests were performed with the circuit at steady state. For each test, samples were collected from HPGR fresh feed and discharge, and total feed, then the particle size distributions of the samples were determined and mass balances around the circuit were calculated. The conclusion was that the reduction ratio of the HPGR increased with increase in recycling load. The flake densities showed the same trend with more compacted flakes being produced for higher recycling loads.

The Pacific Mobile Belt (PMB) is characterized by old origin and complex evolution both in time and space. As the global structure, the PMB is a narrow tectonic region dividing two plan-etary hemispheres, viz. the Pacific and IndoAfro-Atlantic ones, the relative shifting of which defines the character of many geodynamic processes in this belt. The PMB features inhomogeneity of structure, special matter composition characteristics, sharply broken-out topography, and intensive fields. Generalized anomalies of the gravitational field closely correspond to the PMB boundaries defined by the real features, i.e. the andesite line and distribution areals of Mesozoic-Cenosoic granitoids. The belt boundary position is controlled also by seismic velocity anomalies at a depth of down to 200 km. The modern PMB deformation is defined by the left-hand equatorial shift and rotation of the Pacific Ocean counterclockwise. This rotation is non-uniform in time and of an oscillating character. The motive forces of the phenomenon are considered.

Chemical kinetics is a dependent process which usually correlates the rate at which a reaction proceeds with the mechanism descriptive of the manner by which reactive particles interact. Given the latter, the object gen- erally is to find the reaction rate dependency in terms of an intensive property of the system - number of reactive particles present, and of the energetics of the system - usually temperature. Chemical kinetics depend on a dem- onstration that reaction considerations alone control the phenomenological process under study. For these rea- sons, chemical kinetics are usually involved in homogeneous gaseous systems. Even in liquid homogeneous sys- tems earliness or lateness of reactant mixing rather than chemical kinetics may be controlling. Considerations of transport phenomena are involved in heterogeneous systems and often control the observable rate:an additional problem in such systems is to apportion the rate due to mass transfer - usually a linear process - and that due to reaction which may be linear or non-linear. Experimentally, conditions are often chosen so that only one consideration controls but this becomes more difficult where solid phases are involved. Kinetic modelling involves considerations of chemical kinetics, transport phenomena, and factors attributable to the physical environment in which the process takes place. The latter two considerations may be quite different as between experiment and plant. The kinetic model may be a mathematical representation of a conceptual mech- anistic model of the reaction. Alternatively, it may be an empirical relationship resulting from, for example, some curve fitting procedure applied to experimental data. The latter approach may be necessary where the system is particularly complicated.

Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.

In classical drill and blast underground mining methods, especially narrow vein operations economic quantities of broken ore can be left behind following normal mucking operations on the stope floors. The ore left behind can have significant economic value and if not collected can be lost forever. This paper reviews techniques for cleaning this material from stopes that have been used in the past and reviews possible modern techniques that can be applied to ensure this valuable material is removed from the stopes.

One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.

Geostatistics has been widely used for more than four decades as a powerful tool in ore resource/reserve estimates and grade control. This method has gradually replaced the conventional method such as polygon and cross-section for grade estimation by more mathematical techniques such as kriging. The advances in geostatistical understanding and the availability of appropriate software packages have given much more contribution in speed and high accuracy during production. However, in many cases, these techniques are sometime applied without support with a good thorough understanding of the geological controls on metal distribution. To produce the result close to actual, the geological control in interpretation and appropriate geostatistical task is a must. Geological logging was described in the core must be consistent with the level plan produced by commercial modelling software used as a guide for grade control during production. Experience gained through evaluation of the Central I deposit resulted that the most effective systems continue to be based on geostatistical methods of resource estimation. Computer applications modelling software packages are necessarily as the core of an efficient in undertaking these assignments. They contribute to make a valued to data management and are becoming increasingly effective during processing. The latter role is particularly important to check the actual versus estimated values where will significantly to improve personnel to have a confident with their knowledge combined with experience and complete their jobs satisfy.

It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. A number of ideal detonation codes are used internationally for estimating the strength of explosives compositions. Important and far reaching decisions by explosives users are ofen based on the predictions of these codes, but since different codes can deliver very different answers for the same composition, there is a strong possibility of decision makers being misled. In order to both provide a sensible basis for comparing the theoretical energy from explosives from different manufacturers and to prevent the entire rating system from slipping into disrepute, it is in the interests of all to reach agreement on fundamental criteria used by detonation codes for detemtining strength. The problem is illustrated by a case history and basic conventions are proposed, specifically the adoption of energy of reaction as a fundamental and code independent indicator of explosive energy, and agreement on disclosure by suppliers of key non-proprietary information. These measures would assist explosives customers in assessing the true strengths of explosives from the strengths calculated by the different ideal Codes.

An integrated mining equipment development organisation is typified by Deutsche Montsn Technologic of Essen, Germany. working on improvements in reliability, production and control in coal mines. Examples of recent mining advances are in mechanised roadheading, in different approaches to cutting technology, and in low height roof bolting.On the longwall face the mechanics of cutting are related to supplied energy as well as to dust make. In conveying both armoured face conveyors and conveyor belts are monitored. Roof support is not neglected and the continuous pumping of stowage slurries provides further options for longwall support. Surveying developments, particularly the gyro-theodolite, directional drilling. and shaft vehicle monitoring provide further examples of advances in control in coal mining activities.

Draglines have been used exclusively for primary overburden stripping at the German Creek Mine complex in central Queensland, where coal has been extracted from a series of ten open cut pits working seams of the German Creek Coal Measures. Due to the dip of the seams, most of the pits have now reached the limit of current economic viability and the emphasis has switched to underground extraction using longwall methods and to a new area of open cut reserves in the nearby Rangal Coal Measures at German Creek East. This area is characterised by weak Tertiary overburden, relatively steep dips and low strength intraformational shear planes at the top and bottom of the coal.The first pit, with a maximum depth to coal of 15 m at the low wall, avoided any major slope failure through use of scrapers to excavate the boxcut and dump the spoil away from the low wall. However, this method was not considered economically viable for the second pit where low wall depths reached 44 m. Following geotechnical investigations the boxcut was divided into a number of zones depending on depth of cover, dip and thickness of Tertiary clay. Slope stability was assessed for each zone using several analytical techniques to ensure that dragline mining would be acceptable. Slope design parameters incorporating various stabilisation techniques, notably an updip trench backfilled with competent spoil to form a low wall buttress prior to excavation of the boxcut panel, were successfully integrated into the mine plan after careful consideration of the complex scheduling to minimise rehandle.

In 1991, the first horizontal raise drill hole in Australia was successfully completed by Australian Raise Drilling Pty Ltd (ARD) at the Perseverance nickel mine of Western Mining Corporation's (WMC's) Leinster Nickel Operations in Western Australia. At that time, WMC were experiencing considerable difficulties in developing the horizontal drill drives through the orebody using conventional drill and blast techniques. Following the success of the initial hole, a further two holes were drilled as part of the evaluation program. The technique has proved so successful that it has been accepted by WMC for on-going development of drill drives at Perseverance.This paper describes the program. It relates how the project evolved, the modifications that were required to the equipment used, the performance experienced during the program and the future of the method in this and other applications.

A description is given of a detailed examination of a coal bore core and of attempts to predict properties of equivalent "as-mined" coal using the bore core data so obtained. The accuracy of the prediction was measured by testing independently a large sample of coal which was produced under near mining conditions from a site adjacent to the bore core. Very encouraging results were obtained particularly in the prediction of size and ash distributions and washability characteristics of run-of-mine Coal.
