This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

On-line analysis systems have found widespread application in the metalliferous mineral and coal industries. The continuous analysis and rapid response of these systems has led to improved control of mining, processing and blending operations, with increased recovery of valuable minerals and coal combustibles.The paper reviews developments in on-line analysis by CSIRO and Mineral Control Instrumentation Ltd which led to the award of the Australia Prize 1992. These commercialised systems analyse mineral and coal slurries; determine the ash and moisture contents of coal on conveyors, and the moisture content of coke on conveyors; and determine the carbon content of fly ash. These gauges are estimated to have resulted in productivity increases valued at $50 million per year to Australia.

A geostatistical study is made of the drilling results available one stage prior to the present for a tabular deposit. The results show that the blocks required by the mining engineers could have been assessed by the earlier drilling grid with an accuracy significantly better than that obtained by applying conventional methods at the present stage.

Automatic sampling and weighing of copper sulphide concentrate produced on Bougainville Island (PNG) is described. Contained metal weights gave satisfactory agreement with buyer's results after the introduction of polyethylene lined sealed aluminium foil bags for transport and storage of assay samples. Paper bags used previously for this purpose permitted oxidation of the sulphide concentrate and thus caused lower assay values.

The theory of declining optimimum cut-off grades is more than 25 years old, but for a number of reasons it is still not widely used in industry. A lack of faith in the veracity of estimated grades is not in itself a reason to abandon any attempt to optimise cut-off grades. The use of declining cut-off grades has been thought to cause high-grading, but in fact this is only true if an artificially high discount rate is used in the calculations. Perfect application of an optimum cut-off grade should ensure that only ore generating more than a minimum net return is mined, and that as much as possible of the ore capable of generating that return is mined. Therefore differing mining costs in different parts of some underground mines necessitate local modifications to cut-off grade. Optimisation of cut-off grade is of necessity an iterative process. Integration of that process into a feasibility study need not be excessively time-consuming. A number of approximations can be made to speed the optimisation (any attempt to achieve a high level of accuracy is probably doomed to failure by a lack of precise cost and price projections). A procedure is outlined for optimising cut-off grade during planning of a typical underground mine.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. The environmental and economic impacts of a significant dependence on fossil fuels are affecting the future of sectors such as of mining. These impacts are prompting the Australian Government to seek solutions for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels more generally, such developing clean energy and improving energy efficiency. However, limited research has been undertaken to assess the potential synergies between clean energy and mining in an uncertain global future. This paper analyses current energy use by mining in Australia and reviews the drivers and opportunities for energy efficiency and cleaner energy technologies to be coupled to mining under three future scenarios. Linkages between mining and clean energy are investigated for three global scenarios for mining and metals to 2030, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely Green Trade Alliance, Rebased Globalism and Resource Security. These scenarios are applied to assess how they could change the barriers, opportunities and trade-offs required for the development of a more sustainable energy sources by the minerals industry in Australia.

The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

Proceeding from statistical data on the development of waste volume, an endeavour was made to characterise waste materials with regard to the applicability of treatments based on mineral processing. Many types of waste are characterised by a high heterogeneity. The separation processes used for processing raw minerals can also be used for separation of various waste mixtures. For some waste mixtures, differences in properties can be utilised for separation which are mostly less distinctive for raw minerals. State-of-the-art technology is illustrated with selected Examples.

The extraction of platinum and rhodium from scrapped honeycomb autocatalyst into hydrochloric acid/aluminum chloride/nitric acid solutions is described. Results are given for the effects of leachant composition, temperature and catalyst pre-reduction using hydrogen. Data are also presented for the recovery, by hydrogen reduction, of platinum and rhodium dissolved in the leach solution. Parameters studied include solution composition and temperature, hydrogen pressure, and platinum seed addition.

Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins in the Hodgkinson Province are hosted by subgreenschist to greenschist facies metasediments and show no spatial association with granitic rocks. They commonly parallel axial plane foliations or occur in brittle to brittle-ductile shear zones. Detailed mapping in the Hodgkinson goldfield indicates that vein systems are isolated in distinct structural and lithologic domains by post-mineralization faulting. Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins have distinctive mesoscopic textures characteristic of the mesothermal vein environment. Some of the antimony-gold-quartz veins are located on domain boundaries which truncate the gold mineralization. In. some areas, tin and tungsten-tin mineralization which are spatially related to Late Palaeozoic granitoids appear to postdate the gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz mineralization.Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic studies of vein and alteration assemblages associated with these diverse ores provide constraints on fluid sources and have implications for the origin of mesothermal gold mineralization. The available isotopic data are consistent with a dominantly magmatic source for tin and tungsten-tin mineralization although there is evidence of a late-stage meteoric component in some tin-mineralizing systems. The high cost of sampling systems is largely due to the fact that indiv- idual mechanical type sampling units must be installed at the discharge end of ore/pulp pipelines, that is, at points where the pipeline discharges into pump sumps or the like. A considerable economic advantage may be obtained in the use of a samp- ling device that can be installed at any point in the path of the trans- porting pipe line. Initial tests on a vertical line with an injection sampler using iron ore concentrates reveal the validity of this type sample versus that taken with a mechanical sampler. A descrip- tion of the injection sampler shows its simplicity of installation, requir- ing minimum downtime on existing lines.

In the minerals industry numerous problems cannot be solved by conventional mathematical models owing to their complexity or a lack of phenomenological understanding. Neural networks provide one way of mapping the ill-defined relations between process variables and functions for such ill-defined problems. Consequently, processes such as leaching and froth flotation are mostly controlled in an empirical way by using rules of thumb. In addition, these processes involve so many independent and dependent variables that the plant operator finds it difficult to visualise or even observe a change in process conditions. The structure of froths developed on the surfaces of industrial scale froth flotation cells has a significant effect on both the grade and recovery of valuable minerals in the concentrate. Although these effects are well known at the process operational level, where considerable heuristic knowledge is available, little work has been reported on a detailed characterisation of the mechanisms and the visual characteristics of the surface froth. Recent results from an on-line observation of froths in several plants have proved the relationships between image features representing froth behaviour and metallurgical results. It will be shown how supervised and unsupervised neural nets are being used on operating plants to interpret computer vision data. In froth flotation the operator is supposed to visually observe process changes from the appearance of the froth, which is an unreasonable demand under industrial conditions. The system described here determines textural parameters on-line, and tracks the changes in process conditions via a Self-Organising Map (SOM) neural net. This monitoring system warns the operator about fluctuations in reagent addition, and gives an idea of the type of froth encountered. In another example, changes in the mineralogical characteristics of gold ores are represented on an SOM map, based on the diagnostic leaching behaviour of such ores.

Legislation up to the early 1950s prevented the mechanical extraction of pillars. The mines operating at that time had formed extensive areas of pillars. When permission for the mechanical extraction was gazetted, conventional equipment was employed for pillar extraction and generally using hand mining systems. The mid-fifty's saw the of continuous miners. These machines eliminated the disadvantages of conventional equipment and the necessity for multiple working places. Some new layouts for panels emerged; however, actual extraction methods of pillars still followed closely that of hand mining. During the early sixty's the extraction of standing or new formed pillars was undertaken by the "open-end lift" or a "split and lift" method.

The San Vicente stratabound zinc-lead rhythmite deposit, Peru, is hosted in carbonates of the Late Triassic - Early Jurassic Pucara Group. These strata were deposited in a large, shallow water, carbonate platform which extended nearly continuously for 150 kilometers (north-south) in the eastern part of the Pucara basin.The distinctive sulfide-bearing rhythmites occur in three dolomite units which, from bottom to top, include the San Judas horizon with one sulfide-bearing manto; the San Vicente horizon with seven sulfide-bearing mantos including the main ore horizon; and the Alfonso horizon with three sulfide-bearing mantos. The dark gray sulfide-bearing dolostone layers range in thickness from a few millimeters to a few centimeters and contain variable amounts of carbonaceous material, pyrite, quartz, fine-grained sphalerite and galena. They are bordered on each side by selvages of yellow to red-brown coarse-grained sphalerite containing minor amounts of galena. Coarsely crystalline white or gray sparry dolomite is found between the coarse-grained sphalerite layers. Although commonly stratiform and uniform in thickness, the dark layers curve, "pinch out," coalesce, and form "islands" and "peninsulas."Mineral replacement textures, the paragenetic sequence, and presence of sparry dolomite, bitumen, intraformational breccias and isotope data support a hydrothermal replacement origin by metal-bearing solutions that deposited the ore and related minerals in space previously occupied by dolomite and evaporite minerals. The alignment of the Zn -Pb deposits, and at San Vicente the orientation of the mantos, the spatially and temporally associated igneous sills and the tourmaline-bearing sandstone support hydrothermal mineralization driven by a magmatic heat source in a tensional regime.

The Skybolt is a new bolt concept, point anchored with resin in large diameter holes of specific sizes 38 mm and 45 mm. The new design achieves the optimum annular spacing required for mixing the resin anchor components which is essential for optimum resin bonding of the bolt to the surrounding rock. This paper explains the load transfer mechanisms between bolt/resin/rock, unique to this bolt concept. It compares the pull-out test results to those of paddle and expansion shell type bolts, and highlights the versatility of Skybolt over existing, currently used, rock support systems and the benefits mine operators can achieve when using the Skybolt.

Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

This paper describes the methodology developed to establish a sequentia mining plan applied to a coal mine, using computers. Firstly, isocontou. maps were generated from the drill holes and outcrop description information, representing the thickness and depth of the rock formation: present in the mine site. The procedure relies on the repeated application of the cross validation techniques, until the standard deviation of thi estimation is reduced to a minimum.From this map the coal reserves of the two coal seams, the overburdet (separated in hard and soft material) and the interburden were calculated After that, the maps were transferred in digital files to AutoCAI software, where different mining plan simulations were performed. 7b ore evaluation in each case was done automatically, including tonnages volumes and stripping relations. The final mine configuration consider the economic aspects of the operation.
