Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.

One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.

A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Effective exploration, testing and analysis is essential for good process design and optimisation of coal preparation plants. Coal processing relies on the sizing and washability characteristics of the particular coal to define the most cost effective design to meet the market requirements. Flowsheet development and equipment selection is dependent on the natural quality characteristics of the coal, its physical properties and the value of the final product in its market. The methodology of process selection and the key elements in design are discussed. Coal is consumed in two general markets: ò steaming coal - both domestic and export, and ò metallurgical coal. This paper discusses the typical economic analysis required to evaluate the potential for, and cost benefit of, providing the flexibility to switch coals between markets. A case study illustrates the methodology of process selection in a typical high value metallurgical coal.

This paper has been written collaboratively by members of the International Mining VR Group. It is the first of a series of papers. Mining in the 21st century is a high technology industry that strives to reduce risk and improve safety through the use of improved processes and procedures. This risk reduction process is aligned with the innovative use of technologies often developed for other industries. Computer-based visualisation systems and their content are such innovative technologies, in particular the use of virtual environment systems and mixed reality. A primary objective of developing virtual environment systems and the mixed reality content displayed in them for the mining industry is to allow mine workers and operators to practice mine processes and demonstrate competency in tasks that will be encountered in day-to-day mining operations at mine sites. It is anticipated that providing easy access to virtual environment systems will facilitate the avoidance of high-risk situations through improved knowledge, skills, understanding and decision making. Via virtual environment systems mine workers will also be able to practice infrequent or emergency events and maintain preparedness for such events. Day-to-day mining practices can also be evaluated. The rapid pace of technology innovation and the decreasing cost of simulation hardware and software present a plethora of technology to the uninitiated. This can be confusing. In this paper taxonomy is presented that classifies hardware, what it can display and also content that can be included or displayed on the various computer-based visualisation systems. The taxonomy provides insight into where technology can and may be implemented in the future as virtual environments are a dynamic and evolving technology. The taxonomy should also assist in the decision making process when scoping or selecting technology for a particular purpose.

"Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation in the future. The importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing.This paper outlines the introduction of automated mining systems in large conventional mines as well as their growing role in block cave mines currently operating or being developed. The paper will then focus on a case study of how the communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation system within the overall mine operation.Mining operations already embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote and automated mining, but also provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments and requirements. Removal of gangue minerals from ilmenite concentrates can be accomplished by relatively low temperature roasting in controlled gas atmospheres to selectively enhance the magnetic separation characteristics of the ilmenite. At roasting temperatures below 800¦C the magnetising reactions are often not consistent with phase equilibria considerations. Metastable phases can nucleate and control the roasting products. In weathered ilmenites the phase assemblages and microstructures in the altered ilmenite grains can influence the roasting reactions. In this paper we give an overview of the phase chemistry of chemically weathered ilmenites and of metastable phases formed by low temperature roasting. We also report the results of roast experiments conducted in a neutral gas atmosphere. Major increases in magnetic properties after short roasting times at low temperatures were obtained for a range of ilmenite concentrates. For example heating a secondary ilmenite concentrate from Western Australia for 15 minutes in nitrogen at 600¦C gave an increase in the three kilogauss magnetic fraction from three to 92 wt per cent. The solid state phase changes accompanying the inert atmosphere roasts were characterised by combining elemental analyses with quantitative phase analyses of the ilmenite concentrates and their roast products. It was found that the phase reaction that is principally responsible for the increase in the magnetic properties of weathered ilmenites involves a transformation of disordered ferrous-containing pseudorutile to an ordered ilmenite-hematite solid solution containing typically ten to 35 mole per cent of the hematite component. Examples are given of the application of the inert atmosphere roast to effect separations of ilmenite from gangue minerals.

The Konongo Gold Project is located on the western margin of the 125 Moz Ashanti Gold Belt in Ghana, West Africa. It is situated 60 km along strike of the world-class mineral system at Obuasi and is interpreted to lie on the same controlling regional shear system.The project is operated by Signature Metals, a subsidiary of the Liongold Corporation, and is managed and funded by the Liongold Corporation.Historic underground operations at Konongo produced 1.6 Moz Au at a head grade of 11.8 g/t Au, from eight operations spread along 16 km of the shear system. Mining focused almost exclusively on free-milling gold in quartz, ignoring the gold-bearing sulfide mineralisation associated with the quartz veins. Underground mining ceased in 1986.In 2013, Signature Metals re-focused the program at Konongo to assess the viability of mining the sulfide ore sustainably. This led to the first campaign review of the historic underground data and resource potential since mine closure. The Obenemase mine was the first of the eight operations to be assessed as part of this campaign.Large amounts of legacy data have survived for Obenemase and several historic resource estimations have been completed based on these data. The data typically consisted of hand-drawn sections and plans, and ledgers of commonly incomplete drilling and sampling data. Some drill core have been lost over time, but a large amount of quarter-core and half-core as well as pulps and rejects are still available. Previous resource estimates had a low confidence value because all the available assay and geological data were integrated effectively with the estimates, resulting in a lack of understanding of both grade and geological continuity.This project built a new geological model for Obenemase that greatly enhances the understanding of the controls on mineralisation using a thorough approach of re-surveying, re-cataloguing and re-logging. This model led to an increased degree of confidence and a subsequent upgrade of resource classification, and created several previously unrecognised strong exploration targets. The objective of this paper is to examine the operation of high frequency screens in closed circuit grinding, where the outcomes achieved indicate favourable economic gains at the comminution stage and downstream processes, including flotation, dewatering, and filtration operations. The classification process in grinding circuits has been slowly evolving within the last century. The history of classification devices brings to mind rake classifiers and spiral classifiers, which although having higher efficiencies compared to hydrocyclones, were not able to keep pace with the evolution of concentrator equipment treating higher tonnages. This higher tonnage throughput has tended to drive the concept of utilising hydrocyclones as the classification stage in closed grinding circuits. The comminution process is commonly the most energy intensive stage of mineral processing. Researchers have determined that the classification stage in the comminution process has the greatest potential for improvement. This paper is intended to inform mineral process engineers of the benefits that high frequency screens offer over hydrocyclones. This will be done by reviewing the purpose for the evolution of classification in the comminution process, documenting past and recent studies, and explaining the modern technology that is currently available.

A belt press filter (BPF) handbook containing practical information for the reference of plant designers and operators has been created as part of Australian Coal Association Research Program project C23040. The handbook combines research and experience with newer generations of equipment and circuitry. BPFs are increasingly finding application in the dewatering of thickener underflow tailings slurries due to changing environmental regulations, difficulty obtaining tailings storage facility approvals and limited water availability. Sources of BPF inefficiency and low availability stem from a lack of understanding of the key operational parameters that affect their performance. This lack of understanding typically leads to increased operational expenditure due to suboptimal reagent dose rates and increased maintenance costs, or decreases in plant availability due to excessively high filter product water contents and equipment failure. It is essential for the continued economically competitive operation of Australian coal handling and preparation plants that complex factors affecting BPF operational performance are clearly defined and understood. Installation and operation handbooks are often provided to sites with new installations, but these manuals are manufacturer- or even model-specific and are often focused on mechanical maintenance. The handbook identifies industry ‘best practice’ and improvements developed by other sites, such as extra spray bars, air system bleed valves, guarding designs, feed and filtrate protection screens and roller tensioning systems. Equations to predict optimum operating conditions – such as free moisture, belt tension and reagent dose rates, with simple feed-specific variable inputs – have been developed from site-specific test work. The correlations developed provide a benchmark for plants to attempt to achieve. This provides operators and process engineers with a tool to explain BPFs and assist them in optimising the performance of BPF dewatering plants of both contemporary and less modern design.CITATION:Mathewson, D and Eschebach, D, 2015. The discovery since 1990 of four major orebodies in the Mt Isa Inlier - Century Zn-Pb, Osborne Cu-Au, Cannington Pb-Zn and Ernest Henry Cu-Au - only serves to enhance the already high stature of the Inlier in world mining importance. Currently the known mineral resources of the Inlier represent about 11 per cent of the world's Pb-Zn resources, five per cent of the world's Ag resources, and one per cent of the world's Cu resources. More can be expected to be added to these impressive figures given that two-thirds of the Inlier remains obscured by younger cover. Individually, projects such as Century and Cannington may ultimately achieve `world's best' status; Century's proposed production of 450 000 tpa of Zn metal would rank it close to number one with Cominco's expanded Red Dog project in Alaska. Cannington, with projected production of 660 tpa Ag, could become the world's biggest producer of silver. For comparison, Mt Isa produced 170 000 t of zinc metal and 335 t of silver in 1995. The apparent physical diversity of deposits in the Mt Isa Inlier is matched by a great diversity of opinion as to their origins. Because Ernest Henry is hosted by `porphyries', it is described by some as a porphyry copper deposit, despite mineralisation age possibly post-dating volcanic age by 200 Ma. Cannington Pb-Zn could be a Broken Hill-type (BHT) exhalitive deposit, or a late epigenetic replacement `regional skarn'. Mt Isa - Hilton Pb-Zn deposits appear to have experienced all deformational events and he syn-diagenetic in origin, or may have experienced little of the above and be epigenetic replacement deposits formed late in the major Isan orogeny, some 150 Ma after deposition.

Although the majority of current steel production is supported by iron ore sourced from high-grade haematite deposits, the long-term growing demand for steel has led to higher raw material prices and opened the way for many new magnetite deposits to also be developed. There is a rich and long history of magnetite ore processing in Western countries, including large operations such as Cleveland Cliffs in the USA and LKAB in Sweden, as well as smaller operations like Savage River in Tasmania. The challenge for virtually all magnetite operations is to minimise operating costs, which is dominated by the cost of power required to fine grind the ore in order to achieve acceptable concentrate iron grade together with low impurity content. This remains the case today and will be even more important in the future when a carbon tax is expected to become a significant addition to the operating costs for magnetite deposits. Historically, the lowest operating cost was achieved by multistage fully autogenous grinding with integrated magnetic separation steps between the stages. The major benefit of fully autogenous grinding is the elimination of steel grinding media costs and the need to discriminate between steel and magnetite in coarse magnetic separation. The separation step between grinding stages progressively reduces the amount of material to be ground. Application of more efficient grinding technologies developed in the last 20 years, including high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) for fine crushing and stirred milling for fine grinding, has provided opportunities to further reduce the operating costs associated with comminution. Both technologies are already implemented in some magnetite processing operations, although in limited capacity. The results of a theoretical option study for high capacity processing of a hard, fine-grained silica-rich magnetite ore is presented in this paper, with the emphasis on comminution circuit options. Several circuit options are ranked based on a net present value analysis incorporating an estimate of carbon tax added in the operating cost. The study demonstrates the significant advantages of applying more efficient autogenous grinding technologies.

The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. The presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in acid conditions has already been tested in advance, however, the presence of fungi species in these conditions are studied to prove their efficiency as another alternative for the bioleaching of refractory auriferous minerals and Baptista, 1998).

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. Prior to exploitation, the feasibility of mining and recovering ore can usually be determined to a satisfactory level of uncertainty by the consideration of conceptual scenarios, using a range of reasonable parameter values. Such values are selected on experience, knowledge of other mining operations, and the characteristics of the particular deposit being considered. Having established such feasibility, it is usually considerably more demanding to determine what the optimum set of parameters might be. Yet many decisions taken at the feasibility stage represent commitments extending at least into the medium term.

Gunite was invented in 1907 by Carl Akeley to repair a crumbling facade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. The method used was to blow dry material out of a hose with compressed air and inject water at the nozzle as it was released. In 1911, he was granted a patent for his invention, the ‘cement gun’; the equipment used; and ‘gunite’, the material that was produced.The advantages of using the dry mix process is that the water content can be adjusted instantaneously, allowing more effective placement in overhead and vertical applications without using accelerators. The dry mix process is useful in repair applications when it is necessary to stop frequently as the dry material is easily discharged from the hose.This paper describes the applications and principles of the gunite pump system in underground coal mining and discusses why it is the preferred spraying system for both cement and plaster products.It also addresses improving productivity and examines dust, respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and health issues around gunite pump systems. The Olympic Dam deposit is truly a world-class IOCG-Ag deposit, the world’s fourth largest deposit of copper and the world’s largest known single uranium deposit. Traditional and non-traditional methods have been used to accurately model the geology and mineralisation of the Olympic Dam deposit. Conditional simulation models have long been used as the most robust method for estimating risk and uncertainty in mine planning decisions at other mines around Australia and the world. There are many challenges associated with simulating the Olympic Dam deposit at a selective mining unit size sufficient for underground mine planning purposes. These include the size of the deposit, resulting in hundreds of millions of grid blocks; the disseminated nature of the zoned sulfide mineralisation. And lastly the direct relationship of the relative abundances of the sulfide mineral species that are crucial to the Olympic Dam smelter performance. Several geostatistical techniques have been utilised in the workflow for the Olympic Dam Conditional Simulation model to address these challenges. The key techniques are: • Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform to de-correlate the main elements before simulation. • Pluri-Gaussian implicit boundary simulation method to simulate the mineralisation domains. • Spectral simulation method of de-trended and de-correlated attributes with account of local varying variance. The resulting conditional simulation models have been validated against histograms, grade-tonnage curves, cross-plots and assessed for variogram reproduction. This paper presents how the final conditional simulation models compare to benchmarking models created using alternate estimation techniques of ordinary kriging and local uniform conditioning. It also presents a validation process using historical samples to test final estimate accuracy of the simulation models.

Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.

Blasting related indices were developed to quantify variation in rock strength and structure for each stope, and for each lift of each stope, as part of a Mine to Mill study at an underground open stope mine. The indices were derived from combinations of data from underground diamond drilling because the simplifying assumptions contained in the block model prevented sufficient differentiation in rock mass characteristics to enable adjustments to the blast design.Application of combinations of blasting related indices enabled the identification of stopes with a high potential for inconsistent and oversize fragmentation, underbreak and overbreak. The indices also fragmentation outcomes to deliver increased material flow within stopes, better digability and predict indicative mill throughput. The stopes with issuesCalibration of the results enabled adjustments to the blast design based on the rock mass conditions and accordingly improved the blast outcomes. This enabled improved productivity by reducing underbreak and overbreak, having a more appropriate fragmentation, which reduces unplanned rock handling and improves bogging. The reduction in recovery drilling creates huge opportunities to improve output by reducing production delays and decreasing the overall cost per tonne. By understanding the explosive performance and blast energy distribution in relation to rock mass blastability poor, performing designs in blind upholes and convex stopes were identified.The conclusion of the work is that value improvement, regarding increased revenue and reduced costs, can be achieved across the whole underground Mine to Mill process chain by developing stope based indices from the existing geological information to correctly tailor the blast design to the rock within, and surrounding, the stope.CITATION:Jackson, J and Sellers, E, 2017.
