FUSED quartz is a glass made by the fusion of nearly pure silica. Some confusion in terminology exists but in the trade today "fused quartz" generally refers to the perfectly transparent colorless product made from rock crystal whereas "fused silica" is a white, translucent product made from silica sand. Vitrified silica is the term preferred by purists for all quartz glass, but it lacks the definiteness of -the trade terms. Since the raw materials, methods of production, and properties of the finished products arc different for the two types, the trade terms are preferred. As fused quartz is amorphous, it-physical properties differ greatly from those of quartz crystal. Lacking crystallographic directions and having no piezo-electric properties, fused quartz. of course, has no value for the making of radio oscillator plates; but it does have other valuable and unique properties. Perhaps the 'best known and most useful properties are its extremely low coefficient of expansion and its ability to transmit short-wave ultraviolet radiant energy. They let the whole world know again that not only could we do it, but we make it look easy. The great crews before Scott, Irwin and Worden of Apollo 15 have all blended warm humor, informality and dexterity to put on a good show: but it keeps getting better and the last one was the best. Scott's rendition of Galileo's experiment using a hammer and a feather--not just any feather, but a falcon feather after the name of the LEM-was priceless. One generation of school kids will never forget that lesson. The final touch was in the "would-you-believe''" category, Now if English astronauts had been performing the mission, the sign-off would have been typically low key. Something like; "well its tea time, chaps; we'll have to toddle along." Apollo 15 surprised and thrilled spectators by blasting off to the Air Force song "Off we go into the wild blue yonder" and leaving a camera behind to photograph their own ascent. Now that is what we call showmanship. There is another aspect to our space show and that is that it cost billions of dollars to put on. With that kind of backing, the world for an audience and in the face of grave personal risk, one would expect the space explorers to be all business. Instead they did their jobs with limpid buoyancy. Our older readers will recall and contrast a movie of the thirties and the tense atmosphere when they had to talk that kid up there (Franchot Tone) down through the zero ceiling. A feat of considerably less difficulty than docking LEM. but nevertheless the gut tightening drama was absent in the latter event. In another example, few of us can visualize reporting back after a business mission to one of the old barons such as J. P. Morgan in any but the most sedate and business-like terms. In fact we don't have to go that far back, as we can think of a few pepper-pot bosses we have had to whom one always played it straight.

THe results obtained by pneumatic flotation throughout the country on all classes of ore, and the tonnage now being treated by this particular method, speak for themselves. Its advantages over the so-called agitation process are now established by facts and data from practicc. The comparative efficiency of a rapidly revolving paddle, as a means for aerating an ore pulp, and of a cyeloidal or turbine blower for the same purpose, would seem to be so obvious as to leave no room for discussion. Practitioners in this art are to be congratulated on the acquisition of the valuable literary contributions that have recently been made on the theory of flotation by Messrs. Ralston, Van Arsdale, Taggart and Beach, and others, and the very valuable and able articles by Messrs. Laist and Wiggin on "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont.," by Dr. Rudolf Gahl on the "History of Flotation at Inspiration," and by David Cole on "The Advent of Flotation in the Morenci District." It is not within the province of this article to attempt an answer to the various issues raised in regard to the theory, or to defend the one advanced by me a year ago. But since discussion usually benefits the profession, a reply will be made to some of the statements made by the last-named writers. CoMPABATIVE SENSITIVENESS AND ATTENDANCE Concerning the article, "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont.," by Laist and Wiggin, a little explanation is in order. It should be stated that, with the exception of about 24 days at the end of the testing period, the Callow experimental plant at Anaconda was not run under my direction. This perhaps accounts for some of the concIusions drawn on page 499 of the descriptive paper. The conclusion that the use of acid seems to be of considerable advantage, calls for some comment. While the tests conducted by the Anaconda Copper Co. do show acid to be of considerable benefit, this is a consequence of using acid sludge as a flotation agent. A sumMary of the consumption of coal in 1945 shows that the coke industry ac-counted for 17 pct of the total coal used. No substitute for coke and the blast furnace in the reduction of iron ore has gained sufficient prominence so far to be given serious consideration. However, while the same slot-type ovens are being built and used now as were in use a few years ago, the problem of obtaining suitable coking coals, both high- and low-volatile, has forced many operators to revamp coal-blending facilities. Until the beginning of World War 11, high-temperature ooke plants were able to secure the required high-volatile and low-volatile coals from two or three seams and from three or four mines. Thus, many of our coke oven plants were able to operate with storage bins for two coals only. The vari-pnce in raw materials was not great, and uniformity of blend was a relatively simple problem. Since the beginning of World War 11, many and important changes have taken place. Demand for all coals increased greatly. Production, though kept as near maximum capacity as possible, could not meet the demands for coal generally, and particularly for the various kinds of coal which have proved to be satisfactory for specialized uses; coals were allocated as nearly as possible in the order of greatest need; storage piling was reduced to the minimum necessary to keep plants in operation; uniformity of quality could not be maintained, and with this last, uniformity of composition of blends for coking could not be maintained. Whereas before the war producers of metallurgical coke could fill their needs from three or four mines, by the end of the war it was not unusual to find shipments to a single coke oven plant coming from as many as 30 different mines, in a single month. Since many of the mines producing both high- and low-volatile coal for high-grade metallurgical coke are rapidly nearing de-pletion, the problem of seeking new sources and of blending a number of coals in each plant for the production of high-temperature coke is facing practically every producer in the United States at the present time, and is one which will probably continue for many years to come. Midwestern byproduct coke ovens in the Chicago and St. Louis areas use annually from 12 to 15 million tons of bituminous coals which are transported 500 to 700 miles from the Appalachian coal fields of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. Approximately two-thirds of this coal is high-volatile bituminous. The critical transportation problem confronting the nation in 1943, and the growing scarcity of the best Appalachian coking coals, prompted the Illinois Geological Survey to propose a research program in which would be studied the coking properties of blends of low-sulphur, high-volatile Illinois coal with the high- and low-volatile coals from the eastern fields. THERE has been considerable speculation among mining geologists and mining men in general as to the relative merits of gravity methods in iron-ore exploration. Most of the investigations which have been carried out in recent years have been done by mining companies, and few if any of the results have been published. Three gravity surveys have been made in the Iron River-Crystal Falls area,1,2 one by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, with inconclusive results, and the other two by Radar Exploration Co. for the Cleveland-Cliffs and the M. A. Hanna companies, with results not known to the writers. Both the last-mentioned surveys were detailed investigations, the stations being spaced as close as 10 ft along traverses,1 and were made to determine the feasibility of locating iron ore by gravitational methods. Because of the presence of a large body of ore already extensively drilled, Dr. Harold L. James of the U. S. Geological Survey, Iron River, Mich., suggested that a further test of gravitational methods of exploration be made in the Round Lake area of Iron County, see Figs. 1 and 2. This survey indicated a considerable regional gradient and led to a study of the surrounding gravity field and its relation to the major structural features of the syncline within which the iron formation lies. The southwestern part of Iron County presents a series of hills and hollows elongated in a roughly north-south direction. The bedrock topography is of pre-glacial origin. Relief is moderate; a maximum elevation difference of approximately 350 ft was observed during the survey. Major drainage is dendritic with the larger streams: the Brule to the south, the Paint to the north, and the Iron in the central part. Hills are thickly grown with hardwoods, and lowland areas, not under cultivation, are usually covered by second-growth softwoods. The area covered in this paper includes the southern half of Iron County, Mich., with a deep synclinal basin occupying the central part of the area, and the southeast corner of Gogebic County, immediately to the west of Iron County. The upper Huronian iron formation, slates, and graywackes which form the synclinal basin rest upon a greenstone basement. The basin has not been completely outlined by exposures, drill records or other means, as outcrops are scarce and the thick mantle of glacial drift makes geological investigations extremely difficult. Glacial drift varies in depth up to 300 ft or more. The drift is usually thickest under the hills and is thinnest in the depressions and along drainage courses where most of the bedrock exposures occur. The area over which gravity investigations were made is almost entirely covered by glacial material. Bedrock of the basin consists of a complexly folded series of iron formation, slates, and graywackes. One of the series of slates has a high magnetic susceptibility due to the fine-grained magnetite it contains. This formation can be detected readily by magnetic methods and provides a marker horizon which can be easily followed. The magnetic slates are stratigraphically above the iron formation, and much of the geological interpretation of the area is based upon the magneticc anomalies they produce.

The control of mud properties affords two practical means of tnitigating pipe sticking caused by differential pressure: (I) teducing weight and, therefore, differential pressure; and (2) reducing the friction berween the pipe and mud cake. This paper describes investigation of the second of these—the friction between the pipe and the mud cake. Friction between a steel plate and a mud cake, held in contact by a differential pressure, was measured in the laboratory while maintaining a constant area of contact. Experiments were performed to determine how this friction varied with changes in mud composition and with changes in experimental conditions such as the differential pressure, time of contact of plate and mud cake, and filter-cake thickness. It was found that the apparent coefficient of friction, or the "sticking" coeficient, was not a constant; instead, it increased with increased time of contact between plate and mud cake, and with increased barite content of the Mud. The sticking coeficient varied from about 0.05 to 0.2 afer 20 , and eventually reached values of 0.1 to 0.3 after two Hours. Quehracho or ferrochrome lignosulfonate reduced the sticking coefficient at short .set times but did not reduce the maximum value. Carboxy-~t~etlz~lcellulose had no effect on the sticking coeficient. Emulsification of oil in the mud reduced the sticking coefficient. Some oils reduced the sticking coefficient to about one-third of its Value in the oil- free base mud, while other oils reduced it only slightly. Addition of certain surfactants with the oils further reduced the sticking coefficient. Spotting a clean fluid over the stuck plate caused a reduction in sticking coefficient only if the differential presslrrr was reduced, either temporarily or- permanently. INTRODUCTION Often during drilling operations the drill string becomes stuck and cannot be raised, lowered, or rotated. This condition can be brought about by a number of causes, such as sloughing of the hole wall, settling of large particles carried by the mud, accumulation of mud filter cake during long stoppage of circulation and, finally, sticking by pressure of the mud column holding the pipe against the filter cake on the hole wall. This paper is concerned with the last-mentioned phenomenon. Helmick 2nd Longley' in 1957 suggested that a pressure differential from the wellbore to a permeable formation covered with mud cake could hold the drill pipe against the borehole wall with great force. This situation occurs when a portion of the drill string rests against the wall of the borehole, imbedding itself in the filter cake. The area of the drill pipe in contact with filter cake is then sealed from the full hydrostatic pressure of the mud column. The pressure difference between the mud-column pressure and the formation pressure acts on the area of drill pipe in contact with the filter cake to hold the drill pipe against the wall of the borehole. Helmick and Longley also presented laboratory cxperiments which showed that the force required to move steel across a mud cake increased with increasing differential pressure and with the time the stcel and mud cake had been In cuntact. Their data indicated that replacing the bulk mud with oil reduced the force required for movement. Field evidence was rcported that spotting oil over the stuck interval sometimes freed the pipe. Outmans- in 1958 presented a theoretical paper which described the sticking mechanism and explained the increase of sticking force with time with equations derived from consolidation theory. Since publication of these papers, there has been interest in the differential pressure sticking of drill strings, and several mud additives to reduce sticking or special equipment to free stuck pipe have been proposed."" Haden and Welch" have recently reported laboratory evidence showing that the composition of the filter cake influences the force necessary to move steel on the filter cake. There seems no doubt that differential pressure sticking is a real phenomenon and that its severity depends on the magnitude of the pressure differential across the mud cake, the area of contact and the friction between pipe and mud cake. The mud weight required to control a well is determined by the highest formation pressure in the well: hence, the magnitude of the differential pressure opposite normal or subnormal pressure formations cannot bc reduced. The area of contact may be minimized in several ways (control of filter-cake thickness, use of stabilizers and spirally grooved drill collars), but there arc practical limitations which prevent reduction of contact area from becoming a complete solution of the problem. However. the mud composition might bc altered to reduce the friction between pipe and mud cake. This paper presents quantitative measurements of the friction between steel and mud filter cake and shows how the friction varies with mud composition for given experimental conditions.

SINCE the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. STANDARD BALL-MILL GRINDABILITY TESTS The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The combined minus 6-mesh screen undersize is mixed, sampled and screen-analyzed, and its apparent specific gravity is determined by packing and shaking in a standard container, and weighing. The apparent specific gravity ordinarily is about 60 per cent of the true specific gravity. The unit volume present in the mill in all tests is 700 c.c. of the packed minus 6-mesh roll product, and the number of grams occupying 700 c.c. is the unit test weight. This weight is placed in the mill dry, ground for the number of revolutions estimated to be necessary, discharged, and screened mechanically in three testing sieves of the mesh size at which the test is to be conducted. The oversize, or circulating load, is weighed, sufficient fresh minus 6-mesh feed is added to bring the total weight up to that of 700 c.c., and the charge is returned to the mill for a second grinding period. All standard ball-mill tests are conducted at 250 per cent circulating load, and the number of revolutions in the mill necessary to obtain this circulating load at any grinding period is estimated from the results of the previous period. The number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution of the mill approaches its final equilibrium value after several grinding periods, and this is recorded as the grindability, or relative ease of grinding, of the sample. A cylindrical ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, with a smooth lining and rounded corners, is used with a revolution counter. Under standard grinding conditions it runs at 70 r.p.m., and contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams, ranging from I ½ to ¾ in. in diameter. The Round Table on Qualities of Pig Iron, under the auspices of the Joint Committee on Qualities of Pig Iron, which is made up of members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Foundrymen's Association, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Gray Iron Institute, and the Malleable Iron Institute, was held at the Palmer House, Chicago, III., on Oct. 1, 1935. Y.—Seven years ago last June, in Chicago, we had a round table on qualities of pig iron1, and at that time the foundrymen were out with their battle-axes for the blast-furnace men, and the open-hearth men were doing the same thing. After that meeting there was really a determined effort to find out about the qualities of pig iron, and great progress has been made all along the line. This afternoon we want to have a frank discussion of the qualities of pig iron, whether it is the molten pig iron going into the steel plant, or cold pigs going to the different foundries. We ought to hear something from Dr. J. T. MacKenzie, who is chairman of the Joint Committee, and from Mr. R. E. Kennedy, the Technical Secretary of the American Foundrymen's Association. J. T. Then the Bureau went on further with the fluidity test, and developed a method for the absolute changes of volume at the freezing point. There is one serious gap in the yardstick, which has never been developed, and that is the tendency to draws from heavy sections to light. This brief resume of events, transpiring in Mexico, culled from the daily New York newspapers, since the last Bulletin went to press, does not indicate any degree of improvement in the situation. MEXICAN MINISTER TO FRANCE RECOGNIZED A dispatch from Paris quotes Alberto J. Pani, Mexican Minister to France, as saying lie lead received notification that lie might present his credentials at the French Foreign Office on May 13. This notice came at the moment the Mexican press was announcing his departure for Spain because of inability to present his credentials. MORE REVOLUTIONARY TROUBLES SOUTH AND NORTH Revolutionary outbreaks hulked large in advices from Mexico City at the end of May, says the New York Tribune. General Eznesto Danny, a major, four other officers and forty men, composing a train guard on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railroad, were killed recently in an attack by rebels under Felix Diaz's command. The troubles in the south, coupled with the fact that Villa's activities in the north have necessitated sending troops to campaign against him, have reacted in the capital seriously, it is reported. Military guards hi Mexico City have been doubled and machine guns have been placed on the roofs of the National Palace and the Cathedral. STRIKE AND MARTIAL LAW IN MEXICO CITY Advices from Mexico City, according to the Evening Sun, said that virtually every school teacher in the city was out on strike and that recurrent rioting was being put clown by armed trucks manned by Federal soldiers. The strike of the school teachers was clue to the fact that they had not been paid for months, but the direct incitement is said to have been the contrast between their impoverished position and that of Carranza's generals, who are described as rolling in wealth, and who flaunted their opulence on the streets of Mexico, riding about in high powered automobiles with women bedecked with diamonds and other jewelry. The city is said to be virtually under martial law with no immediate prospect. of a subsidence of the bitter feeling against the military caste.

The $650 million financing for Into Ltd.'s Soroako nickel project is a story worth telling-not only because the project itself represents a significant achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. A critical appraisal of the methods and successes in the financing plan is presented in this article, in light of goals which Inco sought to achieve. A technical assessment of the project is not included, since Inco Ltd. has submitted a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of AIME in February 1979. THE Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company is the largest copper producer in the Philippines, and the only one that makes a concentrate valuable principally for its copper; also, it has the only productive copper mine situated at considerable distance from the sea, and is the only one in the islands operating its own smelter. The Lepanto mine is in the Municipal District of Mankayan, sub-province of Benguet, near the heart of the Mountain Province of Northern Luzon. It is 165 km. from its shipping point at San Fernando, Province of La Union, on the shore of the China Sea. Elevations at the property range from 3200 to 4500 ft. The climate is very mild; temperatures are seldom below 50° or above 80°F. Annual rainfall approaches 170 in. and is mainly confined to a rainy season lasting from May to October. The months from December to April, inclusive, are usually extremely dry. This climatic pecularity entails the problems of landslides on the roads during the rainy season and water shortage during the dry season. The Mountain Trail, an improved rock-surfaced toll road maintained by the Commonwealth Government, gives access to the property. The 105 km. over this road may be traveled in about 4 ½ hr. during the dry season. Very few sections of the road are straight for more than 100 meters, and about one third of it is a one-way road controlled by gates. All freight for the property is delivered by the Manila Railroad Company to Bauang, La Union, 45 km. west of Baguio and at sea level, where it is picked up by freight trucks and hauled via Baguio to Lepanto. Granulated matte is hauled in bulk from Lepanto in four-ton lots on freight trucks to the storage bins at San Fernando. Freight rates from Bauang to the property amount to P8.00 per ton, and from the property to San Fernando the rate is P16.00 per ton. The company pays the road toll, P1.00 per truck, each way. THE CAMP The company maintains a modern camp, well separated from the mine and reduction plant. Comfortable and sanitary living quarters, water, and light, as well as free medical service are provided all employees. A hospital staffed by a doctor and two nurses takes care of all medical treatment. Considering recreational facilities of great importance, the company has provided two tennis courts, two basketball courts, and badminton courts for employees. Bowling alleys and a motion picture theater are operated by the company, the profits being expended for other recreational purposes. THE fundamental problem concerning the fracture of both crystalline and noncrystalline solids is the divergence between the actual and the theoretically computed fracture stresses; the stress required for fracture, computed from the forces between atoms, is many times that actually observed with commercially available materials. Computations have been made1, 2 indicating that the theoretical fracture stress should be from 100 to 1000 times that actually observed. There are other incidental problems that have arisen, perhaps the most important of which is the problem of size effect often observed in the measurement of the fracture stress of non-metallic solids, such as glass. Another effect concerns the relation between deformation and the stress required for fracture. Experiments recently made with pearlitic steels indicate that the tensile fracture stress increases with increasing tensile deformation and decreases with increasing prior compressive deformation. This marked anisotropy of the effect of deformation on the fracture stress is in contrast with the essential isotropy of the flow stress. Early experiments on rock salt crystals by Joffé, et a13 have illustrated the effect of tensile strain in increasing the tensile stress required for fracture. A consistent theory must be constructed that will explain not only the divergence of the measured fracture stress from the theoretical value, the size effect, and the effect of deformation; but will also explain and predict the effects of combined stress, of temperature, of strain rate, and of metallurgical structure. With respect to this last variable, it has now been relatively well established that the carbide particle is the element of structure controlling the fracture of steels. In steels carbide particles vary in shape from plates to spheroids. It has been found that not only does the magnitude of the fracture stress depend upon the size and shape of these particles, but also its dependence upon strain is affected by changes in shape and size of the particles. The precipitate resulting from the age hardening of duralumin also modifies the fracture stress of this alloy. Nonmetallic inclusions greatly lower the fracture stress of all metals. The magnitude of the lowering depends on the size and shape of the included particles. In glass, the major source of the low fracture stress has been fairly conclusively demonstrated by Griffith4 to arise from real flaws or cracks present in the material. He showed that the stress concentration at the end of a defect was of sufficient magnitude to raise the stress at this location to a value comparable with the theoretical strength of the material. If the cracks were reduced in size, Griffith showed that the observed fracture strength increased by virtue of the decrease in stress concentration. He also pointed out that cracks disposed perpendicularly to the applied tensile stress would be more effective in lowering the fracture

The title assigned to this paper permits a discussion of one of the most interesting chapters in the history of the American petroleum industry. Nature was kind to man when she prepared crude oil for him in commercial quantities in the hills of Northwestern Pennsylvania. Most of the refining operations we are now accustomed to apply were either not needed or had been carried out by earth processes ages ago. Such technology as was applied dealt with the physical separation of the valuable components in the crude oil and intermediate products and did not need more than mild refining treatments to bring them to marketable quality. • The pioneer refiners were concerned principally with distilling, dewax-ing and decolorizing operations. The products produced were limited in number and the uses to which they could be put were few. Natural products from the very high grade crudes, then plentiful, supplied the domestic demand and no other markets were open. As time passed, other producing fields were discovered and crude oils of lower natural quality were made available. To refine these grades to a quality expected by buyers, refinery practice had to be changed and new methods found. At the same time the accidental discovery that crude residues could be cracked by dry distillation at atmospheric pressure to produce a much larger amount of lamp oil than had been customary, opened a new vista for the industry. Export kerosene soon became the leading revenue product for all refiners and considerable new technic was added to refinery practice. High sulfur crude oils from Ohio next made their appearance, causing the development of the first commercial desulfurizing process, the sodium plumbite treating method for "sour" lamp oil stocks and the application of fine earth for the removal of "flock." Some improvements in methods of handling lubricating oils and cylinder stock fractions of crude were worked out, but in general, it can be said that the closing decade of the last century found the industry in a stabilized condition. HE task of measuring the specific gravity of the -*- operating medium in a heavy-media separation system has never presented a particularly difficult problem because the medium is fairly stable and the overflow of the separatory vessel, as well as its underflow, can be sampled easily and accurately and the specific gravity of the suspension determined easily by weighing a known volume. However, while this method is simple and accurate it does require the operator to take the sample by hand and to weigh it and there is considerable temptation to avoid the periodic sampling if everything seems to be going well, or if something is occupying the attention of the operator. Furthermore all operators do not sample in exactly the same manner and considerable practice is required for two operators to be able to "check" each other to the last few hundredths, particularly if the sample is cut underneath the drainage screen where location of the point of sampling and load on the screens tends to influence the determination. While none of the above presents much of a problem, we have all recognized that some mechanical method of continuous measurement and recording would be advantageous since the operator would merely have to glance at the meter to check the gravity and to have an indication of the trend of any changes. Also if the instrument were of the recording type, a permanent record would be available for the guidance of the superintendent. The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. was the first heavy-media user to actually install such a recording meter. In 1946 they installed in their Central Mill at Cardin, Okla., a specific gravity recorder manufactured by the Bristol Co. of Water-bury, Conn. R. A. Barnes, of the Bristol Co., working with E. H. Crabtree, Jr. and Elmer Isern, of Eagle-Picher, made the application and worked out the problems of sampling and measuring. Their attempts to measure the specific gravity of the medium in the cone itself were not entirely successful and they resorted to an outside sample tube for actually making the determination. Because of the particular flowsheet used, it was possible to tap off from the medium return pipeline a stream of medium and divert it into the sampling tube, which was provided with a constant level overflow and a spigot underflow, and into which the bubbler tubes dipped. The Eagle-Picher installation was successful and its possibilities were recognized by the Mineral Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. It was decided to install a similar unit in the heavy-media pilot plant to investigate further its possibilities. Chief among these was the continuous record which it was felt would be proof of the steadiness of the gravity in a heavy-media cone, something which is not always appreciated by POtential users. Because the heavy-media pilot plant is required to operate at a wide range of specific gravities, it was realized that the unit would have to record all gravities from 1.25 to 3.50, and do it to the nearest 0.01. It would not be necessary to record all of this wide range on a single chart and the method selected was to have 4 bands, each band range overlapping the other a small amount and calibrated so that with standard charts one division would represent 0.01 sp gr. A shift from one band to another could be arranged without alteration of the instrument itself, being accomplished by a simple change in the bubble-tube lengths, as described later. Accordingly, a recording type instrument was purchased and installed. Because there were some advantages in doing so, the first installation attempted to measure the gravity of the cone proper by placing the bubble tubes in the cone. This was not at all satisfactory and the second scheme utilized a fixed vertical screen at the surface of the cone, and an external sample-tube arrangement. We were particularly anxious to make this work as we felt it would be advantageous to measure the top level of medium where the separation was actually being made, but we were doomed to disappointment because it was impossible to keep the screen clean of float. THE Institute assembled in the Court-House, on Tuesday evening, May 22d, and was called to order by Vice-President E. B. Coxe. After announcement by the Local Committee of the programme for excursions, the Secretary read the following annual report of the Council The Council, in presenting to the Institute its annual report, has to record a most eventful year in the history of the Institute. Three meetings, as usual, have been held, two in Philadelphia and one in New York. At the Philadelphia meetings in June and October, there were present many distinguished foreign engineers, some of whom contributed communications to the Institute, and took part in its discussions. Sixty-seven papers have, in all, been presented to the Institute, which will be published in the fifth volume of Transactions. There has been an accession to the membership of 1 honorary member, 11 foreign members, and 162 members and associates; -8 have resigned, 6 have died, and 30 have been dropped from the roll, after due notification, for non-payment of dues. The membership now comprises 5 honorary members, 60 foreign members, and 644 members and associates, in all 699. As worthy of especial mention in the work of the year are the Discussions on Technical Education in connection with the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the report of the-International Committee appointed by the Institute to consider the nomenclature of iron and steel. The Discussions on Technical Education have been published in a separate volume, and comprise a valuable and suggestive collection of the views of practical engineers and educators. The report of the International Committee, composed of Messrs. Akerman, of Sweden; Bell, of England; Tunner, of Austria; Gruner, of France; Wedding, of Prussia; and Holley and Egleston, of the United States, has received the careful attention of engineers and metallurgists of all countries, and has met . with very general acceptance. Of the work of the Centennial Committee in Philadelphia the members are generally familiar, from personal experience, and from the detailed report of the committee at the last meeting of the Institute. But the record of the service rendered by this committee would he incomplete without mention of the numerous letters of thanks and formal expressions of obligations received by the Institute from individuals, societies, and governments abroad. The wise and generous spirit in which the work of the committee was planned, and the laborious and self-sacrificing manner in which it was carried out, call for emphatic expressions of thanks from the Institute. The gifts of Centennial exhibits to the Institute, largely as testimonials for services rendered, has necessitated the appointment of a Museum Committee for

The production of petroleum in Mexico during 1930 was approximately 39,600,000 bbl., or 5,188,000 bbl. less than in 1929. The decline which has continued for the last eight years, will place Mexico in fifth or sixth rank as an oil-producing country. The production of the northern and southern fields near Tampico declined over 5,250,000 bbl., while that of the fields in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec moderately increased. The wildcat operations which have been conducted for some years near the international border along a 290-mile belt, extending roughly 170 miles northwest and 120 miles southeast from Laredo, Texas, have so far met with little encouragement, although the oil possibilities of the region warrant the belief that commercially productive fields will be discovered eventually. An interesting development during the year was the starting of construction of the oil pipe line from Palma Sola in the South Fields near sea level—over Sierra Madre at 8660 ft.—to Atzcapotzalco, a suburb of Mexico City at an elevation of 7350 ft. This line, about 146 miles long, has a diameter of 10 in. and an estimated daily capacity of 10,000 bbl., and with its terminal refinery at Mexico City will form a transporting and refining unit which should materially affect the distribution and marketing of refined products in the Republic. Development During the past year 148 wells were drilled, as compared with 214 in 1929 and 371 in 1928, the percentage of producers being 49 as against 47 in 1929. With the exception of one well in San Isidro, at the extreme southern end of the Golden Lane, the Jardln Paso Real area was the only sector of the old fields where new development could be considered as successful, all other producers brought in during the year being drilled in nearly exhausted pools to be operated as ('strippers." Northern Fields A total of 71 wells were drilled in the northern fields, of which 22 were producers; one well in Ebano was estimated at 5000 bbl. per day, while the general average of all producers was less than 300 bbl. THE history of the development of the strip in- dustry, mentioned in this paper, was covered in considerable detail by Stephen Badlam in his paper presented. before the American Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in New York last October. The description of progress in rolling strip there out-lined will be found good reading by anyone interested in the subject. Quoting from Mr. Badlam's paper, "For practically thirty years, we find no record of the use of the backing-roll principle, until in 1916 the Lukens Steel Co., Coatesville, Pa., put in a 206-in. plate mill of the four-high type. This was a reversing mill with two 32-in. working rolls and two 50-in. backing rolls and is today making the widest and heaviest plate made anywhere in the world." The functioning of this mill, though rolling hot plate, is, on account of the extreme width and thinness of plate rolled, quite comparable to the rolling of wide strip either hot or cold and was a considerable factor in demonstrating the marked advantages available with the four-high or backing-roll mill for thin accurate rolling. As the writer has brought out, a demand for a product, the rolling of which required the character-istics of the backing-roll mill, was broached by the In-ternational Nickel Co. This resulted in an inquiry of March, 1924, for the building of a mill capable of cold-rolling wide nickel and monel metal sheets or strip, as mentioned. It may be of some interest to note, that whereas the .six-roll cluster mill with plain bearings was built for this installation, the mill designed by the United En-gineering and Foundry Co. for this inquiry was of the four-high type with roller bearings on the backing-roll necks, being essentially the same design as the four-high roller-bearing mill built in 1925 for the Rome Brass & Copper Co. This Rome mill, to quote again from Mr. Badlam's paper, "fulfilled every requirement, and was the model on which succeeding mills of this type were built."

THE Hudson Coal Co. is an anthracite concern with 22 mines, employing, when operating full, something around 18,000 men. We have, there-fore, necessity for a large number of subordinate officials and for a considerable number of major officials, and we carry on two separate courses of training in our endeavor to develop these two groups. The one in which college professors will be most interested is that which we call our two-year course. A man to be eligible for it must have completed a college course at one of several institutions from which we regularly seek our men, but he need not necessarily be a graduate of the course in mining, although we have been giving prefer-ence to graduates of schools of mines. Each year we take a number of men from these col-leges, sometimes five, six or seven, and put them through this two-year course, which is carefully. laid out so as to give them experience in the various details of our business. A schedule of the typical two-year course laid out for a man who started in July, 1925 shows that he was employed in the mining engineering department first for a period of four months, then for six months in inside mine work, three months in the mechanical and electrical departments, two months in "preparation," which with us means the cleaning of our product for market, one month in the study of statistics, one month on transportation and safety, and seven months in loading coal at the face, working with a shovel, making twenty-four months in all. We started this training in 1915 and in the first year we gave six months in the mining engineering depart-ment. We have now cut that to four. We gave six months in inside mine work and have continued that. We gave four months in the mechanical department, which is now cut to three; five months in preparation, now cut to two; two months in statistics, now cut to one; one month on transportation and safety which re-mains, and we have added seven months in loading coal. This last class of work gives them experience with the miner at the mining face.
