The solid state bonding of aluminum to nickel was studied as a function of temperature, pressure, and time at pressure. The initial results indicated that as the reaction conditions were varied, marked changes in tensile strength occurred. Plots of the log penetration coefficient vs the reciprocal of absolute temperature for various isobars were straight lines displaced from each other. THE techniques of bonding different metals to A each other include brazing, welding, welding by application of a molten phase, and solid state welding without any molten phase present. This last technique, the pressing of metals either at room temperature or at some temperature below the melting point of the metals to be joined, seems to offer interesting possibilities for bonding purposes. However, this technique has not been completely investigated, and very little is known about the diffusion phenomena which occur during solid state welding. Some previous work on the effect of pressure on diffusion1 was inconclusive. This paper is concerned with an investigation regarding the effect that the processing variables, such as pressure, temperature, and time at pressure, have in solid state bonding. The tests were made with aluminum and nickel and special emphasis was given to the strength of the bond between these two metals and to the intermetallic penetration rate during the bonding process. It seems that the effect of pressure on the intermetallic penetration is of particular importance for practical purposes and this effect was therefore studied in detail. Procedure Apparatus: The means of solid state bonding used for this study was that of the hot-pressing technique. This method requires the equipment pictured in Fig. 1 and involved the following procedure. The two metals to be bonded were placed in an aquadag lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diameter made of the same material. A thermocouple

IN reality, the Butte district is the birthplace of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., for it was here that strength was gathered and means provided for later expansions of the Company. The Butte district was organized at a miners' meeting on Aug. 20, 1866, primarily for gold placer-mining operations. Substantial amounts of placer gold were recovered from gulch gravels during the period 1862 to 1868. The earliest lode claim locations in the district were recorded in July and August 1864. The Pennsylvania-grade oil industry suffered a serious decline in 1938, which can be largely accounted for by the decrease in the use of lubricating oil. Production was considerably lower than in previous years and prices were very much lower. Operating profits undoubtedly were lower than the year 1933, for the average price of Bradford crude in 1938 was $1.898 as compared with $1.86 in 1933, and the difference in average price of $0.04 per barrel was more than offset by increased operating costs and taxes. Bradford Field Production in the Bradford field in the state of Pennsylvania averaged 36,759 bbl. per day in 1938 as compared with 41,300 bbl. in 1937. The decline in average daily production of 4541 bbl. can be attributed to low market price and pipe-line proration rather than to the actual physical capacity of the field. Pipe-line proration was in effect for the last eight months of the year and the daily average production per month fluctuated between a maximum of 41,852 bbl. per day in March 1938 and a minimum of 33,649 bbl. per day in November. Production figures for Bradford field have been corrected to include only the parts of the Bradford field that arc within the state of Pennsylvania, but the well-completion data for the Bradford field cannot be segregated and include those of the entire Bradford field, part of which is in Sew York state. Production from the Bradford field was obtained almost wholly by water-flooding and no radically new methods or practices occurred. Intensive research work was carried on both by individuals and companies and as a cpooperative enterprise, and minor improvements are gradually occurring in spacing, shooting, application of pressure and water conditions. Drilling Central and Southen Pennsylvania.—Pennsylvania production in central and southern Pennsylvania was obtained largely by air and gas repressuring together with the usual amount of natural production, and the repressuring operations in other than the Bradford field have not

Oil production and activity in northern and central Pennsylvania was slightly less in 1939 than in the previous year, but owing to higher average prices 1939 was undoubtedly a better business year. The last quarter showed markedly increased activities throughout all of the Pennsylvania fields. Production, Stocks and Price Storage of Pennsylvania crude oil at pipe lines and refineries totaled 5,413,000 bbl. on Dec. 31, 1938, and declined during the year 1,124,000 bbl. to a total of 4,319,000 bbl. at the end of 1939. The stocks of crude at the end of the year represent the lowest point reached in Pennsylvania-grade crude storage in recent years. Stocks increased slightly during April, May and June, but decreased during all other months of 1939. The Bradford field production within the state of Pennsylvania averaged 35,340 bbl. per day throughout 1939, which represents a decrease of 1419 bbl. a day from the 1938 average. The production in central and southern Pennsylvania increased 1176 bbl. per day, averaging 12,159 bbl. throughout 1939. Table 1 includes annual production for the part of Bradford field situated within the state of Pennsylvania, for central and southern Pennsylvania, and for the entire state of Pennsylvania. A definite segregation of production between the Bradford field and central and southern Pennsylvania is slightly ambiguous because a portion of the oil from the newly discovered Music Mountain pool is included statistically in each area. In all probability the entire increase and some small addition to the production from southern Pennsylvania can be attributed to oil produced from the Music Mountain pool. Within the Bradford field, six price changes occurred throughout the year. At the beginning of 1939 the price of Bradford crude oil was $1.80 per barrel, whereas by the end of the year it had risen to $2.50. The weighted average price for Bradford crude during 1939 was $2.059 per barrel.

ONE of the most unusual features in connection with the strike of the union coal miners in the bituminous fields, now in its sixth week, is that the public interest seems to have completely died out. There is nothing on the front page and very little on any other page of the daily newspapers in connection with the strike. The United Mine Workers' officials must be rather disappointed to find that the only way in which they are being featured in the papers at present is in the reports of the trial for treason that is going on in Charlestown, West Va., against the local leaders of that organization for their responsibility in connection with the attack of the miners' army last summer against the non-union mines of Logan and Mingo Counties. Recent reports state that there are 13,000 cars of coal standing on the sidings at union mines for which no billing has yet been found. The output of the non-union mines has been gradually increasing but has never reached the maximum that they are capable of producing, owing to their inability to obtain enough orders to make it possible to run full operating time. The, present output is estimated at, 4,500,000 tons a week. It is possible, with a full car supply and full demand, to bring this output up to approximately 6,000,000 tons per week, and it is very doubtful whether, at this season of the year when probably there is less consumption of coal than, at any other season, the requirements of the country are greater than the 6,000,000 tons which the non-union mines are capable of producing. It would appear, therefore, that there is no immediate prospect of any settlement of the bituminous strike, and there is certainly no reason why the operators of the union mines should show any anxiety to begin operations as long as they have unbilled coal standing on their sidings.

THIS topic was discussed at the meeting in St. Louis in September, 1917, and at the meeting in New York in February last, but in the interval the war has accentuated in measurable degree the necessity for considering human relationship, not only as between nations, or in the treatment of our returning soldiers, but with respect to the relations between labor and capital in industry. It is my firm conviction that no other subject will have so large a place in industrial and political life during the next decade as this. Heretofore, the employer has been so engrossed with the financial, mechanical, and technical aspects of his business that he, has been willing to muddle through 'his relations with labor as best lie might and, on the other hand, the laborer has been so engrossed in his endeavors to secure a livelihood under whatever living and working conditions might be offered him that he has given little thought to his relations to his employer, until some misunderstanding has ended in disagreement and strike. No thinking man doubts that were the machinery available for friendly, personal, face-to-face consideration of the problems confronting employer and employee, there would he fewer disagreements, fewer strikes, and a better and more settled industrial situation. The necessity for some such medium for exchange of views has resulted in the organization of labor and, in some measure, of capital. Each party, engrossed only in defending its own viewpoint, has generally tried to gain its point by might rather than by right. Gradually, however, the representatives of both elements are beginning to appreciate that when the machinery for bringing them together in friendly communion is available their differences frequently settle themselves. There remain yet vast numbers of employers and of employees who are not organized and to whom the opportunity of friendly discussion of differences is not available; for these the machinery should he provided.

In preparing a well for pumping, observations are often made of the fluid level in the well bore or bottom-hole pressures at various times before equilibrium has set in. From a qualitative point of view one may immediately infer that if the rise in the bottom-hole pressure or fluid level is rapid the permeability of the sand about the well bore is large, and converse conclusions may be drawn if the rise is slow. However, a more quantitative estimate will give additional information of value, as will be shown in this paper. To derive such an estimate we may proceed as follows. Let h be the fluid height, above the sand face, at time t, and let yo be the average density of the fluid that enters the bore. The bottom-hole pressure, for a fluid height h will therefore be p = rogh, neglecting, of course, the friction drop in the well bore, while the fluid is rising, as may be justifiably done for most pumping wells. If a is the free area of the open-flow string—assumed to be uniform— the rate of production from the sand during the rise of fluid will be: where the last part of the equation merely indicates that, in general, the production rate Q must be considered as a function of the back pressure, and is determined by it alone. In fact, equation 1 shows that if the rate of rise of the pressure or fluid level is determined as a function of the height of rise, or p, for a number of values of the latter, this functional relation between Q and p will be immediately given. Conversely, if we know this functional relation, the rate of increase of p or h may be predicted, or, by observing the rate of rise of p or h some of the constants of the sand may be determined. WHEN a molten zone traverses a long, solid ingot in a level, open boat the ingot becomes tapered. While the taper may be slight after one zone pass, it can be appreciable after repeated zone passes, even to the extent of causing an overflow of matter at the end of the boat. It will be shown here that such matter transport by a molten zone arises from the volume change on melting and that it corresponds in magnitude and direction to the magnitude and sign of the volume change. It will be shown also that the mechanism of matter transport is basically similar to that of solute transport by a molten zone, which has been discussed elsewhere,1,2 and that the two processes can be described by similar equations. Finally it will be shown that matter transport can be prevented by inclining the ingot at a critical angle. Contraction on melting results in forward transport, that is, transport in the direction of zone travel; expansion on melting results in reverse transport. The way in which forward transport arises from the contraction on melting may be seen as follows: At the starting end of a solid horizontal ingot of uniform rectangular cross section of height h., form a molten zone of length 1, as shown in Fig. 1. The height h of the liquid will be h. where a is the ratio of density of solid to that of liquid. Advance the molten zone, at constant length, a distance dx. The volume of solid melted will be hdx; the volume of solid frozen will be Izdx, because the height of the freezing solid will tend to be equal to that of the liquid. The resultant change, dv, in liquid volume will be the difference in these quantities multiplied by the density ratio. A career in the coal mining industry today offers students one of the most interesting and challenging opportunities available in the industrialized world. As reserves of other fossil fuels dwindle in face of the world's demand for energy, it has become apparent that coal, once the king of energy sources, must be relied upon again as the major fuel for powering industrial growth in developed and developing nations. Centuries of coal supplies lie beneath the earth's surface, assuring the world of a steady, plentiful supply of energy until science and technology can produce a way to harness and efficiently use renewable sources, such as solar. The need to increase our use of coal during the last two decades of the 20th century is reason enough to believe that the future growth of the coal industry is assured. A major impediment to that growth might be backward national public policies that could restrict the full utilization of our coal reserves. These policies could result from overregulation and a failure of the public to recognize that coal use, with proper techno- logical safeguards, is compatible with our society's environmental-quality objectives. Communication of this problem and its solution is a major undertaking of the coal industry in the 1980s. At the end of the 1970s7 the American coal industry was producing approximately 635 Mt/a (700 million stpy) of coal. To meet the nation's projected energy needs by 1985, the annual tonnage must be doubled. A similar scenario is predicted for the rest of the world. Such growth in the modern international business world will require huge additional amounts of capital, equipment, and people who know how to wisely raise and apply the capital; use the equipment productively; and deal with the many community, public, and governmental problems such expansion will create. At the present time five localities in the Argentine Republic are known to bear direct evidences of the presence of petroleum. The segregation of these localities is more or less arbitrary inasmuch as minor indications may be found to extend from one locality to the other at no regular distance apart, especially in the northern and western part of the republic. These localities are listed as follows: North Argentine-Bolivian region, Salta-Jujuy district, provinces of Mendoza and Neuquen, Comodoro Rivadavia, and the Gallegos-Punta Arenas region. Economic conditions attract us to the possibilities of developing these and other regions of countries in the southern hemisphere. Development work will, naturally, be undertaken first in such localities as present direct manifestations of the presence of petroleum; "hidden fields" may exist, but, unless discovered by accident, their development will be left to the last. The problems to be solved in the development of the petroleum resources of the Argentine republic are mainly of stratigraphy, structure, and transportation. We are not here concerned with the unfavorable climate of the countries to the north in the tropics where, for us of the "far north," life hangs by a thread ready to be severed by a mosquito, gnat, or tropical germ. North Argentine-Bolivian Region The North Argentine-Bolivian region has already been described by the author.' Geographically and geologically this is admittedly one field extending from Argentine into Bolivia. It is not necessary to repeat here the various conditions pertaining to this field, though the summary may be quoted as follows: Extending from northern Argentine northward into central Bolivia is a belt of petroleum seepages. On account of the remoteness of the district it has, heretofore, been little considered by oil operators. The regional geology is comparatively well understood but the local features have not been carefully detailed. Michigan produced 16,637,000 bbl. in 1937. This makes it a record year in the history of Michigan's oil industry. During the year 953 wells were completed; 779 within the limits of established fields and 174 wildcats; 616 new oil wells, 68 gas wells and 269 dry holes. Table 1 has been arranged in alphabetical order of field names. Production figures for 1936 have been corrected because December figures were estimated. In this year's summary, December production is based on actual reports. The Leaton and Mt. Pleasant fields have been re-defined. Mt. Pleasant production north of the south line of Denver township, Isabella County, has been included with Leaton in accordance with usual practice in Michigan. The locations of fields discovered since the last map was published1 are shown in Fig. 1. Activity during 1937 Buckeye Field.—The Buckeye field of Gladwin County was the center of greatest activity during the year and was responsible for the increase of 4,700,000 bbl. over the state total for 1936. Buckeye produced 6,428,-000 bbl. in 1937. In this field 328 producing wells were completed during the year—over one-half the oil producers drilled in the state. Buckeye was subject to voluntary and cooperative proration from April 1 to the end of the year. Other pools of the state were not prorated. The new production at Buckeye is from porous Dundee limestone of Devonian age, similar to the older fields. Other New Fields.—The Sherman field was second in importance as a source of new production, with a total of 1,532,000 bbl. Salem township, Allegan County, on the southwest side of the Michigan Basin, was developed during the year. Production at Salem is from the Traverse limestone at a depth of 1600 ft., and 52 producing wells have been drilled in this pool. Other active pools were Clayton and Adams townships, Arenac County. Development: Iron Ore In Peru Utah Construction Co., of San Francisco and a Peruvian Government corporation have signed an agreement for development of a large iron orebody in Peru. Most tests show 60 pct iron or better. Most of the ore is magnetite. Although ore will be shipped mainly to Eastern U. S. blast furnaces, shipments to the West Coast may develop as the orebody opens up. The construction firm indicated three American steel companies have shown interest in the project. The orebody is located 300 miles south of Lima and about 15 miles from the coast at the same longitude as New York City. Allen D. Christensen, executive vice-president of Utah Construction noted that the distance is shorter between Peru and the East Coast. The ore deposit measures about four to five miles in one direction and 10 miles in the other. As many as 15 outcroppings within these limits have been reported. Several of the outcroppings are thousands of feet long by several hundred feet wide, Christensen said. Shipments between 100,000 and 200,000 tons of ore per month are projected by the company. Cost of opening the mine to production may go over $5 million, Christensen said. It would include building of docks for ocean going vessels, housing, and heavy duty mining and processing equipment. The contract with the Peruvian government gives Utah Construction six to eight months for additional tests and a 20 year concession for mining the orebody. Peru will collect royalties on all ore. The company will also supply about 300,000 tons per year for an electric furnace to be installed by the Peruvian Government at Chimbote. No steel is produced in Peru now. Utah Construction formed the Argonaut Mining Co. last year, and was shipping iron ore from British Columbia to Japan at a rate of more than 50,000 tons a month, before winter weather decreased operations.

In addition to uintaite, the Uintah Mountains contain a deposit, or vein, of the peculiar hydrocarbon mineral, to which I have given the name wurtzilite, * in honor of the chemist, Henry Wurtz, Ph.D., of New York, who, in 1865, described grahamite, and who has added to our knowledge of the composition of the hydrocarbon minerals. Wurtzilite and uintaite are very similar in appearance, but are very different in their physical and chemical properties. Both are black, splendent and shining in fresh fracture; but the wurtzilite has a decided toughness, and a degree of elasticity, especially when warmed, which suggests to some persons a resemblance to caoutchouc. It was at first, at Salt Lake, believed and reported to be a mineral form of India-rubber, and great expectations of its value as a substitute for crude rubber were indulged in. It was, however, found that it would not act like rubber with sulphur; it would not incorporate with it and become "volcanized," and it was very refractory and insoluble in the ordinary solvents of rubber and of uintaite. The elasticity, though unlike the elasticity of rubber, led to the reference of the mineral to the species elaterite, the only name under which an elastic bitumen is described in the mineralogies; and it is so called in the list of the mineral products of Utah, given in the last message of the Governor of the Territory. The name elaterite, as used by Dana, covers at least three differing substances, ranging in specific gravity from 0.905 to 1.223. Two of the varieties are soft and elastic, much like India-rubber, and one is occasionally hard and brittle, imbedded in the softer kinds. All are rare, and comparatively unknown, and not generally represented in mineral collections. One of the varieties referred to here is the subterranean fungus from Derbyshire, described by Lister as early as 1673.

CARBONIFEROUS CLAYS FROM a geological standpoint, but scant attention has been paid to fire-clay beds. Only within the last few years have they been the subject of individual investigation, prior to this time having been considered only in their relation to coal seams. While the relative importance of coal and fire clay is still immeasurably in favor of coal, yet an industry as large as that of fire clay is entitled to a measure of attention. A discussion of the Carboniferous clays is practically a discussion of the clay beds in the Appalachian basin, since more than 90 per cent. of these clays mined are from this region. The clays are confined to the northern end of the basin, or the States of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia, ranking in importance about in the order named. The clay deposits of the Carboniferous period have been divided into two classes; those found in the Pottsville conglomerate series of rocks, and all those that are found in the formations above, for the reason that the clay beds above the Pottsville series all resemble each other in properties, composition and appearance, and all are distinctly different from the bed found in the Pottsville formation. The bed of clay found in the latter formation is unique in that flint clay is practically restricted to it. (A variety of flint clay is occasionally found in these upper deposits but this is in such small amounts as to be negligible.) Carboniferous clays occur between stratified rocks; sandstones, limestones, etc., in the same manner as coal veins. They are often accompanied by a coal vein although where the clay is of a workable thickness the coal is generally too thin to work. The clay beds are sometimes known by the name of the coal seam at which horizon they occur. Clay beds may be from a few inches up to 20 ft. in thickness. They may consist of all soft clay all flint or both soft and flint.

These future improvements will be made possible by a greatly increased need for underground excavation and the awareness of industry of its own latent capabilities. The factors of most interest to any potential user of a tunneling machine are those making possible an increase in production. The first and most obvious factor, and probably the one that has created the excitement and interest of most people, is the increase in boring rate through faster rock fracture and improved support systems. Boring rate can be increased by more horsepower in the form of increased thrust, torque, and cutterhead speed, and by better cutters and cutting methods, better material-handling systems, and better ground-control systems. All of these items are extremely important and are the basis of much discussion and effort by everyone concerned with the excavation of tunnels by machine. The second factor, just as obvious and equally important as an increase in boring rates, is "increase in production through better utilization of the tunneling machine and related equipment," which means a reduction in downtime through greater reliability of equipment. Mechanical rock attack is presently capable of cutting hard rock at 5 fph and soft rock at more than 20 fph. In current practice, however, this advance rate is maintained for less than 50% of the shift time. I predict that tunnel-driving contractors and their supporting manufacturers of tunnel-boring equipment will provide machinery that will maintain these advance rates for more than 90% of the shift time. This increase in effective production will be due to the increase in reliability of the tunneling machine and tunneling system components. IT SHOULD be clearly understood that my remarks on economic conditions in Russia are entirely personal, and not official as an officer of the Ameri-can Relief Administration. The American Relief Administration is concerned exclusively in relief operations. The American Relief Administration has played a large part in the conditions as they exist in Russia today and it does not seem to be out of order to give you the high lights of the work accomplished. SIXTY MILLION DOLLARS FOR RUSSIAN RELIEF The Riga Agreement, by which we were enabled to carry on our operations, was signed in Riga on Aug. 20 of last year. On Sept. 8, we opened our first relief station in Petrograd. On Sept. 18, our first food was handed out in Samara on the Volga River, in the center of the so-called famine district. Altogether over 775,000 tons of food have been sent from the Atlantic Coast into Russia and we have moved this entire quantity of food over a dilapidated and wornout system of railways; and we estimate that our loss will be less than one-half of one per cent. in shortages and thefts. We have had available for this Russian work approximately $60,000,000. The bulk of this money was derived from a Congressional grant of $20,000,000 for food stuffs, a further Congressional grant of Army medical surplus supplies of $4,000,000, a grant by the Soviet Government of $11,400,000. This Soviet grant is a rather interesting phase of our operations. In all of Mr. Hoover's relief work abroad he has demanded of the country receiving relief that the people them-selves do something concrete for their own good before he would undertake to collect large sums of money in America. Secondly, before he was willing to go before Congress and ask for funds from our government he desired that the Soviet Government show their good will.

In the cyanidation of gold, silver and mixed ores, the solids, suspended in the pulp after fine grinding, primary settling and scries agitation arc subjected to a washing step known, generally, as countercurrent decanta-tion, abbreviated C.C.D The conventional C.C.D. plant consists of a series of separate thickeners—three to five in number—arranged in series on slightly different elevations. Solids settled in the first thickener are pumped at maximum density into the second thickener, where they arc diluted with weak solution overflowing the third. After settling in the second thickener they are pumped to the third, where the process of repulping with still weaker solution is repeated, and so on throughout the system, until they reach the last thickener and are repulped with barren solution or water. Recently there has been developed a new type of thickener, known as the Dorr Washing Tray Thickener, consisting of up to five individual thickeners, which performs in a single unit all the functions of a conven-tional C.C.D plant. Fig. 1 illustrates the essential features. It is a multicompartment tray thickener, in which the trays operate in scries instead of in parallel for countercurrent washing. Feed enters the top compartment via a central, semisubmerged feed well. Strong solution overflows into a peripheral launder. Solids settle to the bottom, are raked to the center and flow into the top of the second compartment, directly below, via an inverted cup and scal. Solids pass downward, compartment by compartment, against a counter flow of wash solution and finally of fresh water. Thus, in accord-:trice with the basic C.C.D. principle, the solids transfer the dissolved metal content to the wash solution and finally are removed by a diaphragm pump from the bottom compartment virtually free of valuable material. Similarly, the wash water, as it flows through the system, becomes increasingly enriched in dissolved metal until it overflows from compartment two and returns to the process.
