IN approaching the problems of sampling coal, a brief statement of certain facts that are more or less taken for granted may be helpful: 1. The coal-mine operator needs reliable data as to the physical and chemical characteristics of his coal in order to plan and control intelligently its mining, preparation, and marketing. The consumer needs such data in order to select the equipment and the coal best suited to meet his requirements, to check the quality of fuel delivered, and the efficiency of its use. Various government control agencies require such data as a basis for classifications and establishment of limits, for use in carrying out the requirements of federal, state or municipal laws. 91. All such data must be obtained by analyses, measurements, or tests made on samples, which are taken to represent the coal tested. It is now becoming generally recognized that, in accordance with statistical laws, test results from samples are not expected to represent the exact qualities of the lot or lots from which they are taken, except within statistical, or "expected limits. Such limits are definitely specified by some present standards of the American Society for Testing Materials and the British Standards Institution. 3. Samples that give ash within satisfactory limits are usually assumed to be sufficiently accurate for other analyses, except under special condi¬tions such as meeting close specifications for coals showing wide variability in sulphur, fusibility of ash, or other quality. 4. In modern coal sampling the increment is recognized as the basis for taking samples. For a given accuracy the number and weight of increments specified are increased with: (a) the expected ash, and (b) the top size designation of the lot to be sampled. 5. It is extremely important that every sampler recognize that: the specified number and weight of increments are minimums, and that the precautions to be used in order to take them properly are also minimums; that in the reduction of the gross sample the sizes specified for the coal after each stage of the crushing are maximum; that the quantities specified to be taken after each crushing stage are minimum; that any short cuts or failures to meet the requirements specified will reduce the statistical accuracy of the results, although it is possible that one or two checks on a few results may seem to show otherwise.

Both the room-temperature and 600°F (315°C) primary solid-solution phase boundaries for the silver comer of the Ag-Cd-In temary system have been determined using X-ray diffraction and metallo-graphic techniques. Solid solubility of indium in silver at room temperature and 600°F (315°C) is shown to be between 20.3 and 21.7 wt pct, and corrects the previously extrapolated value of 18 wt pct appearing in the literature. The solid solubility of cadmium in silver at room temperature, not previously established, is shown to be between 34.9 and 41.3 wt pct. The solid solubility of cadmium in silver at 600°F (315°C) is confirmed as 43.2 wt pct. The shape of the primary phase boundary line for the subject temary system appears straight at room temperature and curves con-vexly towards the solvent (silver) comer at 600°F (315°C). THIS investigation was undertaken to initiate development of the Ag-Cd-In ternary diagram by establishing the primary solid-solution phase boundary in the silver corner of the diagram. At the present time, a diagram for this ternary system is not available, while this system appears to offer potential for a variety of uses. One alloy in the system has already proven to be useful as a control rod material in nuclear reactors.1"3 To encourage additional exploration of the potential of the system an understanding of its ternary diagram would be beneficial. It is towards this end that the present study is directed. LITERATURE SURVEY In undertaking this study, a comprehensive literature survey was first conducted to find information that would be useful for guidance. Useful knowledge did result from investigating the respective solubilities of indium and cadmium in silver as indicated in the binary constitutional diagrams of the systems Ag-In and Ag-Cd and also reviewing possible shapes of ternary primary phase boundaries. Weibke and Eggers~ used metallographic techniques to establish the system In-Ag as illustrated in Fig. Is This diagram shows that silver in the solid state is capable of dissolving approximately 18 wt pct In. This solid solubility of indium in silver holds true from room temperature up to 1276°F (691°C), then decreases continuously up to 1'761°F (960.5"C), the melting point of the silver. The solid-solubility limit of indium in silver established by Weibke and Eggers has been confirmed by Hume-Rothery and Reyno1ds. G Durrant' used a method which consisted of microscopic examination of quenched specimens to establish the Cd-Ag system as displayed in Fig. 2.' The primary phase boundary of Fig. 2 proved to be in good agreement (ie., within 1 wt pct) with other studies*'1' of the Ag-Cd system made using X-rays and metallog-

The I phase was discovered by Bardos, Malik, Spiegel, and Beck1 in the V-Ni-Si system at 1100°C and in the Mn-Co-Si and Mn-Ni-Si systems at 1000°C. Kuzma and Hladyshevskii2 and Kuzma, Hladyshevskii, and cherkashin3 have reported a new phase, which they named the S phase, in the Mn-Co-Si and the Mn-Ni-Si systems at 800°C at approximately the I phase compositions. The powder diffraction diagrams of the I and S phases, compared by Bardos el al.,1 are related but show distinct differences in relative intensities. Professor Paul A. Beck kindly sent us a specimen of the (v-Ni-Si) I phase for single-crystal study. Precession and Weissenberg diagrams taken with a tiny single-crystal fragment showed that the structure is monoclinic with a large unit cell. The cell dimensions were refined from a powder diffraction diagram taken with CrKa radiation in a 57.3-mm camera with our computer program LSCELP4 using only the indices of those reflections that were observed on Weissenberg diagrams (hnl, with n = 0 through 9 and n = 12) and precession diagrams (Okl, lkl, Izk0, hkl, hk2). Table I shows the agreement obtained between the l/d values calculated with the final values for the cell dimensions and the l/d values observed by Bardos et al .1 for I(V42Ni33Si25), by US for I(V41Ni36Si23), and by Kuzma and Hladyshevskii2 for S(MnpCoSi). The powder patterns contain many broad and diffuse lines. In fact practically all powder lines observed are near-superpositions of several reflections. The refinement program is not set up to handle several reflections contributing to one observed line: the position of each line is refined with the aid of one set of indices only. The final values for the cell dimensions were obtained from the lines of strong or medium intensity with the indices indicated by asterisks in Table I: a0 = 13.403(6), bo = 23.336(15), co = 9.129(6)A ß = 99.11(6) deg The standard deviations (given in parentheses) are those calculated by the refinement program from least-squares theory and do not take into account that the lines included in the refinement may not have been correctly indexed in every case or that the position of a line may also be partly determined by the overlapping reflections. In drilling operations, attention generally is given to hole angles rather than to changes of angle, in spite of the fact that the latter are responsible for drilling and production troubles. The paper presents means for specifying maximum permissible changes of hole angle to insure a trouble-free hole, using a minimum amount of surveys. It is expected that the paper will result in a decrease of drilling costs, not only by avoiding troubles, but also by removing the fear of such troubles. SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Excessive dog-legs result in such troubles as fatigue failures of drill pipe, fatigue failures of drill-collar connections, worn tool joints and drill pipe, key seats, grooved casing, etc. Most of these detrimental effects greatly increase with the amount of tension to which drill pipe is subjected in the dog-leg. Therefore, the closer a dog-leg is to the total anticipated depth, the greater becomes its acceptable severity. Very large collar-to-hole clearances will cause fatigue of drill-collar connections and shorten their life, even in very mild dog-legs. Another finding regarding fatiguing of collar connections in dog-legs is that rotating with the bit off bottom sometimes may be worse than drilling with the full weight of drill collars on the bit, mainly in highly inclined holes when the inclination decreases with depth in the dog-leg. Means are given for specifying maximum dog-legs compatible with trouble-free holes. An inexpensive technique proposed is to take inclinometer or directional surveys far apart; then, if an excessive dog-leg is detected in some interval, intermediate close-spaced surveys are run in this interval. The application of the findings should result in a decrease of drilling costs, not only by avoiding troubles, but mainly by removing the fear of such troubles. The result would be much more frequent drilling with heavy weights on bit, regardless of hole deviation. Because of errors inherent to their use, presently available surveys are not very suitable for detecting dog-legs. There is a need for instruments especially adapted to dog-leg surveys. Crooked hole drilling rules should fall into two distinct categories—(1) those whose purpose is to bottom the hole as desired, and (2) those whose purpose is to insure a trouble-free hole. Three kinds of first-category rules in usage today are as follows. 1. A means to bottom the hole as desired is to prevent the bottom of the hole from being horizontally too far from the surface location; this may be achieved by keeping the hole inclination below some maximum permissible value such as, for instance, 5. 2. Another means to achieve the same goal is to limit the rate at which the inclination is allowed to increase with depth. A frequently used rate is 1/1,000 ft. In other words, a maximum deviation of l° is allowed at 1,000 ft, 2 at 2,000 ft, 3 at 3,000 ft, etc. 3. Whenever application of the first two means precludes carrying the full weight on bit required for most economical drilling, then the best course is to take advantage of the natural tendency of the hole to drift updip, displace the surface location accordingly and impose a target area within which the hole should be bottomed. This method has already been successfully applied,'.' and its usage probably will become more frequent in the future. Means for calculating the amount of necessary surface location displacement are avail-able.3'5'6 If in high-dip formations the full weight on bit should result in unreasonably great deviations, the situation could be remedied by increasing the size of collars and (if needed) the size of both hole and collars,351 or in some cases by using several stabilizers. Rules which would fall into the second category (i.e., rules whose purpose is to insure a trouble-free hole) are seldom specified today. It is vaguely believed that following Rules 1 and 2 of the first category will automatically prevent troubles. Actually, this is not true. If at some depth the only specified rule is that the hole inclination must be less than 4", the hole may be lost if the deviation suddenly drops from 4 to 2, or if the direction of the drift changes, etc. Rule 3 of the first category is generally used in conjunction with a rule belonging to the second category, namely, that the hole curvature' (dog-leg severity) must not exceed the arbitrarily chosen value of 1½ /100 ft. The ß and a ß transformations in plutonium were studied with particular emphasis on the transformation kinetics and microstructure. Significant observations are: 1) The kinetic data show conclusively that the ß — a transformation in high-purity plutonium can proceed isothermally with no athermal component. 2) Plastic deformation of the stable (3 phase retards the subsequent (3 — a transformation. 3) Plastic deformation of the stable a phase accelerates the a — ß transformation; the acceleration is attributed only to residual stresses. 4) The a and a?a volume changes occur anisotroPically in textured plutonium. 5) An apparent crystallogvaphic relationship exists between the parent and the product phases of the and (3 — a transformations. 6) Both applied uniaxial compressive stresses and uniaxial tensile stresses raise the starting temperature for the ß — a transformation. 7) A given uniaxial tensile stress favors the a — ß transformation more than an equivalent applied uniaxial compressive stress opposes the transformation. These observations of the (ß —a and a — ß phase changes in plutonium are consistent with known mar-tensitic transformations. ThIS paper elucidates some of the characteristics of the a— ß and ß —a transformations in plutonium. Because considerable conjecture exists about the mechanisms by which the phase transformations occur in plutonium, experiments have been performed to provide indirect information concerning the mechanisms responsible for the a —ß and ß -a transformations. Indirect information is of particular value in the study of plutonium because of the experimental difficulties presented by the metal. Single crystals have not been produced in any of the allotropes. The large density results in high X-ray and electron-absorption factors and consequently complicating X-ray and electron diffraction. The kinetics of ß — a and a — ß transformations of plutonium and the behavior of the transformations under a variety of conditions have been investigated in detail. Information about the mechanisms of the allo-tropic transformations of plutonium was obtained indirectly from three sources: 1) the effect of plastic deformation of the stable parent phase upon the transformation kinetics; 2) the behavior of the metal transforming under applied stresses; and 3) the microstruc-tural and crystallographic features between parent and product phases. PHASE-TRANSFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS In characterizing solid-state phase transformations in metals and alloys, it is useful to define several types of transformations. An aim of the present work was to identify the low-temperature transformations in plutonium by type, i.e., as martensitic or nonmar-tensitic. Practical definitions for these terms follow. The terms commonly used to categorize phase transformations lack universally accepted definitions. This confusion arises doubtlessly because some terms specify crystallographic or morphological character while other words have a kinetic or a thermodynamic connotation. For example, martensitic specifies certain definite crystallographic restrictions. Unfortunately, martensitic is sometimes used in an ill-defined way to imply kinetic characteristics. Further confusion attends the use of such expressions as nucleation and growth, diffusional, and massive. From time to time new systems of phase-transformation nomenclature are suggested; unfortunately none of these has gained general acceptance.1,2 The authors of the present paper have no intention of entering the controversy. We recognize that some readers may object to the nomencliture used here. For exampie, the terms military and civilian have recently been used in much the same way as martensitic and non-martensitic are used in this paper. This paper is intended to describe several specific details of the low-temperature phase transformations in plutonium. The authors have found it useful to identify these transformations as martensitic; the term was chosen as the best available to describe the experimentally observed features of the transformations studied. A martensitic transformation is one that occurs by the cooperative movement of many atoms; the rearrangement of atoms from parent to product crystal structure occurs by the passage of a mobile semico-herent growth interface. The geometric features characteristic of a martensitic transformation are a specific orientation relationship between the product and parent phase lattices, a specific habit-plane orientation for the growth interface, and a shape change with a specifically oriented shear component. There is no alloy partition between the parent and product phases in a martensitic transformation. Martensitic transformations may display either athermal kinetic behavior or thermally activated isothermal kinetic behavior. Some martensitic transformations occur isothermally, although more commonly martensitic transformations are athermal. Isothermal martensitic transformations are suppressible by rapid cooling. In athermal martensitic transformations, nucleation and growth are not thermally activated and the transformations are essentially time-independent. THE following is a brief account of the methods of measuring intelligence especially prepared for use in the U. S. Army, of typical results, and of some of their immediately practical applications. It has been prepared for the assistance of army examiners and for the information of all who are interested in the relations of scientific placement to military efficiency. PURPOSE OF THE INTELLIGENCE TESTS Under the direction of the Division of Psychology, Medical Department, and in accordance with provisions of War Department General Order No. 74, mental tests are given recruits during the 2-wk. detention period. These tests provide an immediate and reasonably dependable classification of the men according to general intelligence. Their specific purposes are to aid: 1. In the discovery of men whose superior intelligence suggests their consideration for advancement; 2. In the prompt selection and assignment to development battalions of men who are so inferior mentally that they are suited only for selected assignments; 3. In forming organizations of uniform mental strength where such uniformity is desired; 4. In forming organizations of superior mental strength where such superiority is demanded by the nature of the work to be performed; 5. In selecting suitable men for various army duties or for special training in colleges or technical schools; 6. In the early formation of training groups within regiment or battery in order that each man may receive instruction and drill according to his ability to profit thereby;

NAME AND OBJECT. SEC. 1. SEC. 2 All Members, Honorary Members, Associates and Honorary Associates of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as the same existed on the day of the incorporation of this Institute, are Members, Honorary Members, Associates and Honorary Associates, respectively, of this Corporation SEC. 3. The following classes of persons shall be eligible for membership in the Institute, namely, as Members and Honorary Members, all professional mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists or chemists, and all persons practically engaged in mining, metallurgy or metallurgical engineering ; as Associates and Honorary Associates, all persons desirous of being connected with the Institute who, in the opinion of the Council, are suitable. Although many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other intercsted parties to give out their "inside information " Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County, at this time. Locality and Description The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. LouisSan Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 21/2 hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75' west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south 45" east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parall el syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin south of the Cement anticfine. The positjon of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of-Cement, has not been discovered. TOPOGKAFHY In the southwest part of the state, nearly all maps of Oklahoma show two mountain areas—Arbuckle and Wichita—which are conspicuous geological and topographic landmarks. In addition, some maps show a third, and smaller, range, named the Keechi Hills, in the vicinity of Cement. These hills also form a conspicuous feature in the landscape; but for some reason they have been neglected by geologists, and the

Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in nonmetallic mining with limited financial risk-if properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgments are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate, and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources. Basic Reasons to Establish a Limestone Quarry Profit Motive: Certainly the dominant and overriding motive must be that of attaining a reasonable profit. In certain situations a quarry firm may acquire land, necessary rezoning (if required), and satisfy all of the other prerequisites preparatory to beginning operations but delaying the actual development.

The c axis indentations in zinc crystals were shown to undergo 100 pct strain recovery on heating. The mode of deformation and the details of the polygonization and collapse of indentations were found to be consistent with a number of predictions of dislocation theory. IT has been observed that indentations of the type made by Jillson in zinc crystals can, under certain conditions, be macle to shrink in size and even completely disappear on heating the crystal, Fig. 1. The details of the process are interesting in that they afford a simple experimental illustration of several predictions of dislocation theory. The indentations were made as shown in Fig. 2 by dropping a 0.2 g indenter with a hemispherical point on a cleavage face of a. zinc crystal. Such indentations can be made through relatively great thicknesses in the c-axis direction. The material close to the struck surface, where mechanical twinning and complex distortion occurred, was removed by cleavage. The remaining crystal, which was about 1 cm thick, contained a dent that was accurately round and almost the same size on both top and bottom surfaces. The indentation had the form of a flat cone of half angle approximately 89°, having a rounded apex and a rounded intersection with the unde-formed part of the crystal. The mode of deformation was primarily slip on the three equivalent systems in the basal plane. Six types of dislocation loop (plus and minus in each of the three directions) as shown in Fig. 3 are required by the geometry of the indentation. The maximum shear strain in the radial direction amounted to approximately 2.5 pct. Slip was distributed in the usual, microscopically nonuniform, manner among the possible parallel slip planes. When an indentation was made close to a (2110) surface, three separate sets of interpenetrating slip bands appeared as shown schematically in Fig. 3. A small biaxial tension strain in the plane of (0001) is also a geometrical necessity for the formation of an indentation. VERY little is known about the properties of relatively pure refractory metals in the cast state since these metals are customarily made by powder-metallurgy methods. Recently, the development of the vacuum arc-melting furnace has made possible the study of large, sound ingots of cast molybdenum. The ductility of molybdenum, at room temperature, may vary considerably. Often the brittle state depreciates the utility of molybdenum, even for the material prepared by powder-metallurgy techniques. At the outset of this program, it was felt that if the causes of brittleness were to be determined it might be possible to reduce the difficulties met in the working of molybdenum. Also, the problem of producing strong, fusion weldrnents of molybdenum might be solved. The conditions required to produce ductile molybdenum by the powder-metallurgy technique are reasonably well known. A fibrous or elongated-grain structure has good ductility although this property is probably directional. The equiaxed structure obtained in fully recrystallized molybdenum has been considered to be brittle. The reasons for this behavior of molybdenum have not been established. The preparation of cast molybdenum ingots by the vacuum-arc method was described by Parke and Ham.' By this method, ingots weighing up to 250 Ib were produced." Parke and Ham1 found that molybdenum ingots containing more than approximately 0.0025 pct oxygen could not be hot forged. On the other hand, they found that fully deoxidized cast molybdenum, containing up to 0.06 pct carbon, could be hot forged. However, the as-cast ingots containing either carbon or oxygen were brittle at room temperature. Parke and Ham,1 Woodside,3 and Zapffe, Landgraf, and Worden4 noted the inter-granular precipitation of oxide or carbide in cast molybdenum. This study—part of an extensive program on mo-lybdenum—had the following objectives: (1) To investigate the causes for the brittleness of cast molybdenum at room temperature, (2) to investigate the means for improving the ductility of cast molybdenum at room temperature, and (3) to add to the knowledge of cast molybdenum and of cast metals in general.

BITUMENS have been defined by Abraham1 as substances of variable color, hardness, and volatility; composed principally of 'saturated hydrocarbons, substantially free from oxygenated bodies, sometimes associated with mineral matter; the nonmineral constituents being fusible and largely soluble in carbon disulphide. The principal bituminous substances other than petroleums known to commerce are: (1) native asphaltites, such as gilsonite, grahamite, and glance pitch, distinguished by their hardness and relatively high fusing point; (2) native asphaltic pyrobitumens, such as wurtzilite, distinguished by their infusibility and comparative insolubility in carbon disulphide; (3) mineral waxes, such as ozokerite, distinguished by their high content of crystallizable paraffins; (4) native asphalts, containing varying amouqts of mineral matter, distinguished by the comparative absence of crystallizable paraffins; and (5) bituminous residues obtained from the distillation of petroleum. GILSONITE Gilsonite, a black native asphaltite 98 to 99.9 pct pure, characterized by a hardness of 2 (Mohs), a specific gravity of 1.01 to 1.10, and melting point of 230° to 400°F (K and S), is mined commercially only in northeastern Utah. It occurs in parallel, almost vertical veins, from a few inches to 18 ft wide and 8 to 30 miles long, that cut across the Tertiary limestone and shale of the broad Uinta Basin. The bitumen is believed to have been distilled by heat from oily material in the underlying Green River shale. INTRODUCTION The King and Beaver mines of Asbestos Corporation Limited (ACL) were joined in 1957 to form the King-Beaver mine. In 1964, ACL purchased the Johnson's Asbestos Company. The combined underground workings are a part of the King- Beaver mine. Asbestos ore is mined at the rate of 4080 metric tons per day (mtpd) to provide 15% of the company's daily requirement in the Thetford Mines area. Figure 1 shows the location of Thetford Mines. Two shafts service the underground. No. 3 shaft, 457 m deep, is used for personnel and material transportation, downcast ventilation, and ore hoisting. No. 4 shaft, 820 m to the south, is 389 m deep. It is used for material transportation and upcast ventilation. Figure 2 shows the relative locations of the shafts and the underground workings. The ore is mined by block caving. HISTORY The orebody outcropped at surface and was first mined as an open pit. Underground mining commenced when open pit mining became impractical. Shrinkage stoping, used initially, was unsatisfactory in the highly fractured ore. Sublevel stoping improved ore recovery and safety, but did not overcome the adverse effects of the un- stable rock. Observations of the rock failures indicated that block caving would be satisfactory. This was confirmed by careful investigation and testing. A method of block caving similar to that used at the Miami Copper Company was adopted. The first block commenced production in June 1933. BLOCK CAVING General A large block of ore is undercut above pre- pared drawpoints. The ore above the undercut caves by its own weight. Caving progresses up- ward as the caved ore is drawn. A large proportion of the rock breaks up in the caving action so that it will pass through the drawpoints. Oversize blocks are broken by drilling and blasting or mudcapping. Figure 3 shows the progressive stages of block caving. In the central part of the ore zone, the vertical dimension of a block is determined by the 132 metres between production levels. When isolated ore pockets are developed, the vertical dimensions of a block depend on the extension of the ore zone above the undercut. The minimum horizontal dimension of an under- cut determines the cavability of the overlying block. When necessary, caving is assisted by drilling long horizontal holes into the block above the undercut and blasting them. This procedure speeds up or restarts caving. It will not ensure complete caving of blocks having undercuts less than 30 m wide. Orebodies suitable for block caving are highly fractured and wide enough to cave freely without excessive dilution. THE fact that this latest and most modern of the Universal Atlas Cement Company's plants at Northampton, Pa., is the fifth to be built on these same properties, and their development has been coincidental with the development of the portland cement industry in the United States, makes it appropriate to sketch briefly the history of the successive steps. In 1889 the original Atlas Portland Cement Co. started its first plant at Coplay, Pa., which is just across the Lehigh River from the present operation. Here the first successful rotary kiln was operated. These kilns were 6 ft. in diameter and 60 ft. long; they used oil for fuel until 1895, when the company developed the first burner for pulverized coal. Shortly thereafter the Atlas company acquired property on the Northampton side of the river and built its plants Nos. 2, 3 and 4 within the following 10 years. During the same period the production of portland cement in the country was increasing rapidly; owing largely to the development of the rotary kiln and improved grinding machinery, which lowered the cost and improved the quality of cement. The general tendency has been to increase the length of the kiln and grind both raw material and finished product finer. In 1930 the Atlas Portland Cement Co. and the Universal Portland Cement Co. united to form the Universal Atlas Cement Co., and the same policy of improving the product has been continued. Because of the large amount of research carried on by manufacturers and consumers, including government agencies, there is a demand for cement of different chemical and physical characteristics for different kinds of structures. Hence many engineers in recent years have been asking for cements of certain definite chemical analyses, which they think are best for their particular jobs. This has compelled the manufacturer to make several different types of cement by variations of chemical composition. These are generally made by adding silica, iron and lime to the standard mixture, which necessarily increases the cost of the product. Therefore the Universal Atlas Cement Co., in planning the modernization of its Northampton plant, gave this particular phase of the problem considerable study. Research and experimentation have developed the practicability of making a wide variety of differently proportioned raw materials for cement by a process of subtraction rather than by addition. With such process, it is possible to discard the undesirable aluminates and silicates from the ample supply of impure limestone available from the company's property rather than by adding high-grade limestone obtained from distant sources. This procedure requires mineral separation by centrifugal sedimentation and froth flotation. Experiments performed in this laboratory on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures through unconsolidated sands have been described and discussed in an earlier paper.4 In these earlier experiments a definite relationship was found between the liquid saturation of a sand and its permeability to the liquid or gas phase. Furthermore, the nature of the sand, the permeabilities of the sands over a range between 17 and 260 darcies, appeared to have a negligible effect upon the saturation-permeability relation. Likewise experiments indicated that the viscosity of the liquid, or the substitution of an immiscible liquid for the gas phase, had only a very slight effect on the permeability-saturation relation. This conclusion has since been definitely confirmed by the experiments of M. C. Leverett3 on the flow of oil and water through unconsolidated sands. The sands used by Leverett were of very low permeability (between 6.8 and 1.04 darcies), while the oil-water viscosity ratio varied between 90 and 0.057. Since the sands that constitute petroleum reservoirs are largely consolidated, although of widely varying degrees of consolidation, it was desirable to extend the experiments on gas-liquid mixtures to consolidated sand. In the study of consolidated sands additional variables are involved, but for the initial experiments the only new variable to be introduced was the cementing material. Experimental Procedure A comparatively limited assortment of sandstones was available for the selection of the experimental material. Of these, the Nichols buff sandstone appeared to be most suitable. It gives no visual evidence of any bedding planes, it has a firm structure, permitting easy handling, and its permeability is about 0.5 darcy. Its only disadvantage is the fact that it contains an appreciable amount of ferric oxide which, for experiments involving water, will hydrate and reduce the permeability. This

I. INTRODUCTION IT is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its -magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current Josses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that; indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use.

Exploratory drilling in South Central Texas for the year 1944 showed a marked increase over that of 1943 and resulted in a similar increase in new fields discovered. In this area, which comprises the 30 counties included in district No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas,? 61 exploratory wells were drilled during 1944 as compared with 29 exploratory wells drilled during 1943, or an increase of over 100 per cent. Three new oil fields, two new gas fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered during the year, as compared with one new oil field and one new gas field discovered during 1943. These new fields were the result of exploratory drilling throughout the district along the Wilcox trend and the deeper Edwards lime trend, which was started during the previous year. The Wilcox trend yielded the new Loma iilta-Wilcox oil field and the San Caja gas-* tlistillate field, both in McMullen County. The Charlotte field, in Atascosa County, was discovered along the deeper Edwards lime trend. These three discoveries were of considerable importance and subsequent development should indicate the desirability of continued exploration along these trends. The other three discoveries, United oil field in Guadalupe County, Pederson gas field in Milam County and Van Cleve gas field in Zavalla County, were of minor importance. Charlotte Field, Atascosa County, was discovered by the Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. 3 Pruitt, completcd on Aug. 9, 1944, flowing 176 bbl. per day, 3/16-in. choke, 710 lb. tubing, 475 lb. casing pressures, 37.7º A.P.I. gravity, from the top of the Edwards lime from 6917 to 6923 ft. Two oil wells were completed during the year in this field. This discovery is 14 miles southwest of the same company's Imogene field, also producing from the Edwards lime but with considerable difference in reservoir characteristics. The discovery of this field is the result of surface geology and subsequent seismograph survey of the area. Loma Alta-Wilcox Field, McMullen County, was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Company's No. I Atkinson, completed on June I, 1944, flowing 102 bbl. per day, 9/64-in. choke, 1900 lb. tubing pressure, 37º A.P.I. gravity, from Wilcox sand from 6866 to 6869 ft. after being drilled to a total depth of 7185 ft. This discovery is the result of subsurface geology and an extensive seismograph survey of the entire area. Sun Caja Field, McMullen County, was discovered by Edwin M. Jones No. 2-C Ezzell, completed on June 2, 1944 as a dual completion in the Wilcox sands, flowing 1,740,000 cu. ft. gas with 53 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2035 lb. tubing pressure, 53.2º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6416 to 6453 ft. and flowing 2,000,000 cu. ft. of gas with 127 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2500 lb. tubing pressure, 50º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6889 to 6916 ft., after being drilled to a total depth of 7264 ft.
