The principle that conventional schemes for taxing petroleum or mineral resources are "inefficient" is illustrated using simulation calculations tested against an "ideal" system. Inefficiency is defined as the relative success in maximizing expected government revenues from the resources. Most systems fail because: 1) they leave oil in limbo, i.e. unproduced because of excessive fiscal burden; or 2) they unnecessarily increase the variance in the explorationist'c, rate of return by undertaxing large fields and overtaxing smaller but infra-marginal fields. This increases his discount rate and reduces taxable surplus. An "ideal" tax system is specified which maximizes government revenues while minimizing risk to the operator. Two criteria are developed: 1) the tax falls to zero on fields which yield only the minimum necessary rate of return ("marginal" fields); and 2) the after-tax present value of all fields is the same for all fields above a threshhold size. In particular, marginal fields, while contrib- uting little to expected values, do contribute to reducing variance and hence risk praemia by distributing the exploration costs over a higher probability of successful outcomes.

A perspective is presented of the steel plant sulphur distribution and elimination problem from coal to liquid steel ready for teeming, giving distributions of sulphur over a range of coke sulphur content, and some methods of sulphur control, in the blast furnace, external desulphuriza-tion between blast furnace and open hearth, distribution between fuel, slag, and metal, and methods and limitations of control of sulphur in the open hearth furnace. AS a part of the 1951 AIME symposium on sulphur in steelmaking, it was thought that a discussion of the distribution of sulphur throughout the whole series of operations, from coal and ore to finished steel ingots, might have some value in giving a perspective on the whole problem. The following discussion is an attempt to present such an overall picture. The order is that of the actual plant operations, beginning with a very brief consideration of the coking process. Sulphur in Coal and Coke Since by far the largest source of sulphur entering the steelmaking cycle is in the coal used to make coke for the blast furnace, it would seem reasonable to eliminate some of it, either from the coal, or the coke, or during the coking process. This has appeared impracticable up to the present, at least, for two main reasons: the low activity of the organic sulphur in either coal or coke, and because of price limitations involved in treating a low cost material such as coke. A variable portion, usually M or less, of the sulphur is present in coal in the form of pyrites or similar compounds, and a large part of this sulphur may be removed in the coal washery. Most of the sulphur, however, is normally present as "organic" sulphur, intimately associated with the coal structure. Its distribution prevents any separation by mechanical means. Its low activity makes improbable ' any rapid chemical removal, although hydrogen will remove sulphur from both coal and coke. Thus, prolonged recirculation of coke oven gas in the coking process would tend to leave a smaller percentage of the total sulphur in the coke residue. Table I shows a typical distribution of sulphur from coal into products in the coking process. As the sulphur in the coal increases, the sulphur in the coke tends to increase in about the same proportion. Sulphur in the Blast Furnace The best picture of the situation in the blast furnace is provided by a sulphur balance of raw materials entering, and of products leaving, the furnace. The difficulties in accurate weighing and sampling of the variable solid materials entering this process, and the number of hours required for the raw materials to descend through the furnace under variable operating conditions, make it difficult to obtain an accurate balance. However, balances made over periods of weeks or months tend to average out some of these uncertainties. Table I1 presents three typical sulphur balances similar to a number that the writers have calculated. In most of these the slag volume calculated from the sulphur balance is, in some instances more, and in other instances less, than the value corresponding to the best input and output balances of the other slag constituents (lime, silica, alumina, etc.). Probably the greatest source of error in these calculations is the sulphur content of the slag. Despite some possible inaccuracies the balances of Table II show rather definitely the following points: 1—That 87 to 95 pct of the total sulphur input is in the coke and 95 to 97 pct of the total sulphur output is in the slag. Also, that if any sulphur leaves the furnace with the gas it is relatively small, amounting to a possible 1 pct or less. 2—At the lower sulphur coke level of 0.86 pct the total amount of sulphur charged is 15 Ib of sulphur per ton iron increasing to 26 lb per ton at the higher sulphur, intimately associated with the coal struc-rare burdens containing sulphur-rich ores will the total sulphur burden fail to be nearly proportional to the content in the coke used. 3—The 7 to 9 pct of the total sulphur input from the limestone of furnaces B and C is due to the relatively high sulphur content of the stone, 0.226 and 0.265 pct, respectively. In the case of furnace A, the sulphur content of the limestone was only 0.06 pct which resulted in only 3 pct of the total sulphur input coming from this source. The information in this paper was collected by the author during a five years' residence in the State of Minas Geraes. Outside the State itself, very little is known of the gold-field. Such accounts as have been published are antiquated and contained in publications mostly out of print. The increased attention now attracted to the natural resources of Brazil, and the probability that American capital will be, in the near future, largely invested there, will make an up-to-date account specially useful at this time. I. Historical and General. Soon after the Jesuits founded what is to-day the city of S?o Paulo, gold was discovered in the streams of the neighborhood; and this incited the natives, known as paulistas, to look for it farther afield. After many expeditions into the interior, gold was found in quantity in placer-deposits in the vicinity of Ouro Preto, in 1699, by a prospecting party headed by Antonio Dias. The name of Ouro Preto (black gold) was given because of the superficial dark coating of the gold, and the inhabitants of the district were known as mineiros (miners). Later on, the placers of Cuiaba, in the State of Matto Grosso, were discovered in 1718, and those of the State of Goyaz in 1724. All this territory was at the time a private colony, but on account of its increasing importance it was taken over by the Crown, and in 1739 a royal governor was appointed, with his nominal capital in S?o Paulo, though for a number of years the real capital was Ouro Preto. In 1711 Ouro Preto was raised to the rank of a city, with the name of Villa Rica de Ouro Preto (" rich city of black gold"); and in 1720, by reason of administrative difficulties, Minas Geraes was constituted a separate colony from S?o Paulo, with Villa Rica as its capital. High-temperature heat contents of InSb, GaSb, and AlSb were measured over the temperature range 400" to 1450°K using a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. Smoothed ualues of the thermal properties, H$ - H:9s, have been derived and are tabulated at even temperature intervals. The heats of fusion of the three compounds were determined as, respectively, 5707 *100, 7780 * 100, and 9800 5 3011 cal per g-atorn at the determined melting points of 797" l°, 985" * , and 1330" * 5°K. The calculated entropies of fusion are, respectively, 7.16 0.12, 7.90 * 0.11, and 7.37 * 0.23 cal per deg per g-atotn. The heat capacities increase substantially on tnelting in contrast to the behauior of structurally related germanium and silicon. Deriations from the Kopp-Neumann rule are negative for solid compounds and positive for the liquid phases. Previously obsevrrd "post melting" in InSb is confirmed. The high-temperature thermal properties of 111-V compounds are presently not well-established, despite the technical importance of these semiconducting cbmpounds. Uncertainties in available heats of fusion and heat contents have seriously hampered thermo-chemical evaluations' and thermodynamic analyses of phase equilibria2"" in these systems. This paper reports results of high-temperature heat content investigations of InSb, GaSb, and AlSb measured in the range 400" to 1450°K employing a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. Similar measurements for InAs and GaAs will be reported in a following publication.~ EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Samples. High-purity samples of the compounds InSb and GaSb were supplied in the form of crushed crystal fragments by Dr. Carl Thurmond of the Bell Telephone Laboratories and in the form of single crystals by Dr. A. Strauss of the M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory. Single-crystal samples of semiconductor-grade AlSb were supplied by Dr. W. P. Allred of the Bell and Howell Research Center. Chemical analyses indicated that all compounds were stoichiometric to *0.1 at. pct, which is within the experimental uncertainties of the analyses. Samples were crushed, weighed, and encapsulated in evacuated, thin-walled, fused silica capsules. The capsules were nearly identical in external shape, 2 cm by 2 cm diam, but varied in weight due to differences in wall thickness. One sample of AlSb was contained in a thin-walled, high-purity alumina cup encapsulated in silica and used for heat content determinations of liquid AlSb. The capsule materials showed no visual evidence of reaction with any of the compounds. The sample and capsule weights are given in Table I. Calorimeter. A Bunsen-type calorimeter, similar in design to a previously described instrument6 but employing diphenyl ether (C6H5)'0 as the calorimetric substance, was used for measurements of heat contents above 300.0°K, the melting point of diphenyl ether. Heat input to the calorimeter caused isothermal melting of diphenyl ether, and the resulting increase in volume was measured by displacement of mercury from the calorimeter into a 200 cm horizontal, calibrated capillary, 1.25 * 0.01 mm diam, or into a weighed beaker. The advantages of diphenyl ether over water have been previously pointed out7 and include: i) an increase by a factor of 3.5 in sensitivity as measured by the ratio of the volume change to the enthalpy change on fusion, ii) the smaller required extrapolation from the melting point to the standard temperature of 298.17"K, and iii) the positive volume change on fusion of diphenyl ether in contrast to the contraction which occurs on fusion of ice. Diphenyl ether was purified by fractional crystallization to 99.95 mol pct as determined from the melting point depression with fraction crystallized. During assembly of the calorimeter, the ether was repeatedly outgassed under high vacuum to remove dissolved air. The calorimeter receiving vessel consisted of an 8-in.-long by 1:-in.-diam copper tube with twelve horizontal 3-in.-diam radiator "fins" for dissipating heat to the surrounding mantle of diphenyl ether. Experimental production of Al-Si alloys, containing from 33 to 55 pct Al, by direct reduction of aluminum silicates in a three-phase arc furnace is described. Advantages of a smelting technique utilizing hogged wood waste as part of the reductant and for temperature control are discussed. WORK on the problem of producing aluminum by smelting has been in progress since the middle of the eighteenth century. Early work met with little success and in 1782 Lavoisier, an eminent French chemist, expressed the belief that alumina could not be reduced by carbon. It was almost a century later when the Cowles brothers developed a process for the production of aluminum alloys by reducing alumina coincident with the reduction of other metal oxides. In practice, the other metal oxide was usually copper. In 1907 it was first shown that alumina alone could be reduced by carbon at a temperature of 2200°C. The metal produced was volatilized and lost or recombined with the oxides of carbon formed in the reaction.' For a number of years after the Cowles brothers abandoned production of Cu-A1 alloys because their product was not commercially competitive with the aluminum produced by the Hall process, there was little interest in thermal reduction processes. After World War I interest in such processes was renewed and a number of patents were issued on processes for the production of A1-Si alloys.' , "he function of the silicon in these processes was the same as the function of the copper in the Cowles brothers process, namely, to prevent the reduced aluminum from recombining with the oxides of carbon and to promote absorption of the aluminum vapors set free at the high temperature required for the reduction reaction. The advantage of using silicon in place of copper for this function is that silicon has a higher boiling point (2600"C) than copper (2310"C) and its oxides, combined with aluminum oxides, occur in nature in almost unlimited quantities. No A1-Si alloys have been produced commercially in the United States, as far as is known. However, considerable experimental smelting of aluminum silicate materials has been done by the TVA at Wilson Dam, Ala.' Study of the normal interaction between flotation collectors and the silicates through measurement of the electrokinetic potential carried out by the streaming potential and flotation recovery methods indicates that the interaction is wholly 07 partly of electrostatic origin. In some cases, it partly consists of the chemical affinity of the polar head of the collector for the active surface sites. Reagents composed of a polar head and a paraffinic chain and forming micelles in solution were used as flotation collectors. They are sodium dodecylsulfate (anionic collector) and dode-cylammonium chloride (cationic collector). The adsorption isotherms on biotite of alkylamine chloride having 10 to 18 carbon atoms in their chain all show a sharp change in slope relevant to the condensation of alkylammonium ions into bidimensional phase.1-1 Condensation is possible because of the relative homogeneity of the adsorbing surface and of the very strong lateral binding forces through Van der Waals type bonds in the adsorption layer. The different isotherms are seen to coincide when, instead of the equilibrium concentration, the under-saturation ?µ = kT In C/C, is plotted in abscissa, C representing the concentration of the solution with which the adsorbed layer is in equilibrium and C, the saturation concentration of micelles in solution or. critical micellar concentration. The aim of this present paper is to determine by studying electrokinetic phenomena and recovery curves effectuated with a cationic collector and a anionic collector, the nature of the normal adsorbate-adsorbent interaction. Literature on the electrolysis of aluminum from cryolite melts and on the structure of these melts is surveyed critically. Data on density, freezing point, and other properties are reviewed. Theories of the electrolysis are examined in the light of these data. Two theories are presented which account equally well for the observations. ALTHOUGH the production of aluminum is a large-scale industrial process, consuming approximately 3 pet of all of the electric current generated in this country, the mechanism of the Hall Process remains a 70-year-old mystery. It is a remarkable fact that the aluminum industry, which was established largely through research and owes much of its growth to research, still employs as its basic process the one developed by Charles Martin Hall while he was still a young man working in a woodshed. There are, of course, modifications in detail and a tremendous expansion of the size of the units used, but basically the process employs carbon anodes and a carbon-lined iron vessel as a cathode for the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten salt. Of the almost infinite variety of salts available, the relatively minor Greenland mineral, cryolite, 3NaF.A1F3, is still the only one which gives good performance in the electrolysis. In the early days, the process was thought of as a simple one. The dissolved alumina dissociated and, during the electrolysis, the aluminum was carried to the cathode where it was discharged and collected in a pool of metal. The oxygen was carried to the carbon anode where it reacted to form primarily carbon dioxide together with some carbon monoxide. About the only virtue that can be claimed for this hypothesis is that of simplicity. The actual mechanisms must be tremendously more complex. This paper is devoted to a rather narrow part of the whole subject, namely, what ions are present in the bath, and by what mechanism the current is carried. The complexity of the literature on this system is demonstrated in Table I, which shows the ions postulated as being present during the process. This system is not easy to investigate. Cryolite melts at about 1000°C, so that all the investigations are at relatively high temperatures. Molten cryolite fumes in air, particularly if excess aluminum fluoride is present. The cryolite changes composition on heating at 1000°C, principally by reaction with moisture in the air, but apparently also by reaction with oxygen. Cryolite reacts with most of the customary materials of construction, and those that are not attacked by cryolite seem inevitably to react with molten aluminum. Graphite is the only common material that is inert to the electrolytic bath. Pure cryolite can be held in platinum. There is hope that some of the newer refractories will stand up in bath, and their development for this purpose would be a major advance in the field. The techniques to be discussed, then, are not the most advanced ones. Rather, they are examples of old standardized methods applied under difficult conditions. The principal methods that shed real light on the mechanism are density, electrical conductivity, freezing-point lowering, transport number, viscosity measurements, and reactivity of bath with carbon dioxide. The first measurement to be discussed is density. This procedure is relatively straightforward. A hollow platinum bob is suspended by fine platinum wire from an analytical balance into the melt being investigated. Density1-4 of the system sodium fluoride-aluminum fluoride is shown in Fig. 1. There is a maximum in the density near the cryolite composition, but actually the maximum is on the NaF-rich side of cryolite, close to the composition NaF - Na3AlF8. Density measurements are also useful in giving a clue to the nature of cryolite-alumina melts.1, 4 On the first addition of alumina, density decreases, Fig. 2, although the density of alumina, either solid or liquid, is higher than that of cryolite. These density results indicate that the systems are not simple. A great deal of effort has been spent in measuring the electrical conductivity of molten cryolite and of cryolite with various additives. Conductivity measurements are quite easy for fused salts that can be measured in a dip cell, but no successful dip cell has been made available yet for cryolite. Recourse is had

FOR the past eight years No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill, Nova Scotia-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Department of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S.. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room and pillar method wasp employed and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labor troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In the interval development work for longwall retreating below the 5900-ft. level was vigorously pushed. This longwall retreating system was suggested by Mr. Rice as a possible remedy and was heartily endorsed by the company officials. This paper describes the conditions and happenings subsequent to Mr. Rice's report and more especially the results with the longwall retreating system of mining under the peculiar circumstances pertaining to mining No. 2 Seam, Springhill, at depth, and records the conclusions which experience with several severe bumps under this mode of extraction would suggest. Except where necessary to make the paper intelligible as an entity any duplication of Mr. Rice's report will be avoided.

The process for smelting zinc developed several centuries ago is still in use. Through the experience accumulated over this long period of time, details of the process have been perfected until there is little opportunity to make any further improvement except by a radical change in method. Such a change was accomplished by the process recently developed by the New Jersey Zinc Co. The process to be herein discussed is a still more radical departure, which has been developed to large-scale laboratory operation by the Metallurgical Division of the U. 5. Bureau of Minesl. † The reduction of zinc oxide by carbon is a highly endothermic reaction, which requires temperatures in the range 1200° to 1400' C. for even a slow reaction rate. The transfer of the heat of reaction through thick fire-clay walls, the high radiation loss in the type of furnace used, and the practical impossibility of recovering or using the combustible products of the reduction (CO) cause a deplorable waste of fuel. With the one exception mentioned, all zinc smelting is done in small retorts manually charged and discharged. Attempts to mechanize these operations have been only partly successful, and there seems to be no way to avoid or improve the uncomfortable conditions in which the work is done. The reduction of zinc oxide by methane has a relatively high reaction rate at 1000' C. At this temperature most ore residues do not sinter, and it is possible to use metal retorts. These factors make gaseous reduction especially adapted to a continuous operation and compared to reduction by carbon make possible: (1) higher rate of reaction at lower temperature, (2) more nearly complete extraction of the zinc, and (3) much better utilization of fuel and reagent. Although the reaction between methane and zinc oxide requires 105,900 calories per mole, compared to 86,860 cal. in the carbon reduction, it is obvious that much less fuel will be required to supply 105,900 cal. through 36 in. of metal at 1000' C. than to transfer 86,860 cal. through 1 in. of fire clay at 1300° C. Moreover, the gaseous products of gaseous reduction (CO and H2) can supply 183,430 cal. by complete combustion.

It is a difficult task to find enriched soft iron ore deposits in the central part of the Labrador Trough, New Quebec, Canada, when the areas investigated are covered by glacial drift. A qualitative interpretation of either a combined gravity-magnetic-seismic-resistivity survey or gravity-magnetic-seismic or gravity-magnetic-resistivity survey permits (with a low probability level) the detection of iron formations and ore zones as well as their delineation from most of the country rocks. This is possible because most of the altered iron formation underwent a slight increase in density through enrichment and because the accompanying geochemical alteration changed their magnetic properties. In order to increase the chances of success in finding ore bodies when using geophysical methods, different types of correlation were done for many deposits. These are: I) A quantitative correlation of the residual gravity anomaly intensities with the specific gravity, the iron content, the silica content, the porosity factor, and the dimensions of the underlying ore bodies. 2) A quantitative correlation of the ground magnetic intensity relative to a reference lithologic unit with the percentage of Fe.,O, recovery and with the volume ferromagnetic susceptibility. A few discoveries already have been made with this method. The details of the location, the description of the geology, and the history of previous geophysical surveys and their qualitative interpretation have already been given.', ' A very brief paragraph describing the regional and local geology is necessary in order to facilitate the understanding of this paper. The sedimentary iron formations of the Labrador Trough consist of a 700-mile geosynclinal segment composed of tightly folded and faulted Proterozoic sediments, volcanics, and intrusives that are rich in mineral deposits. The complex sequence rests unconformably on the basement of Archean granitic gneisses. The direct-shipping iron deposits are scattered along a northwest-trending strip, 5 to 10 miles wide and some 60 miles long in the facies rich in iron oxides and preferentially in localities where the original sedimentary environment favorized the deposition of a large concentration of magnetite associated with chert by physicochemical processes, e.g., oxidation-reduction potential, pH, temperature, pressure. Once leached of its silica and/or iron carbonate content and enriched with secondary a-hematite (occasionally goethite), this original magnetite associated with some primary hematite makes the blue direct-shipping ore which constitutes the important ore reserves in this mining district.

TRINIDAD, British West Indies, is an island near the north coast of South America, situated between latitudes 10° and 11° N:, and. opposite the numerous outlets of the Orinoco River Delta. It is separated from Venezuela by the Gulf of Paria (salt, water) and straits over 5 mi. (8 km.) wide. The area of the island is approximately 1750 sq. mi. (453,- . 250 hectares) and the population is approximately 400,000. The climate is tropical with an annual rainfall of from 45 to 60 in. (114 to 152 cm.). The oil fields consist of several units, or fields, located in the southern half of the island. Approximately 90 per cent. of the total production has been yielded by fields situated within 7 mi: (11.3 km.) of the famous asphalt lake and on the southwest peninsula. The most important producing fields, or units, are the following, which are shown on the accompanying map: Brighton, or Pitch Lake Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated beside the famous Pitch Lake; it, even encroaches on the lake. Vessigny Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated 2 mi. (3.2 km.) south of Pitch Lake. Lot One Field, operated by the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and Stollmeyer, Ltd., is situated 3 mi. south of Pitch Lake upon Lot One of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Parry Lands Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., is situated 3;2 mi. south of Pitch Lake on Lot Three of Morne l'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Point Fortin Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., is situated at Point Fortin, 6 mi. southwest of Pitch Lake. Fyzabad Field, operated by Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., is situated several miles southwest of Fyzabad Village and 6 mi. south-southeast of Pitch Lake. Barracpore Field, operated by Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., is situated several miles south of. San Fernando and 15 mi. (24.14 km.) east of Pitch Lake.

This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam, which averaged 1.07 m (42 in.) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is about 13.25 ML/day (3.5 million gal per day) of water. This water deteriorates the mine's predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplilshed by pulling the 5.44 t (6 st) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track 8.05 km (5 miles) to the next longwall panel. Using X-ray pole-figure information and the single-crystal elastic constants, the angular variation of an elastic modulus in a polycrystal can be calculated and compared to measured clalues. This procedure has been used in the past to provide supporting ecidence for a particular choice of ideal orientations in the description o the X-ray pole figure. Since it is well-known that the absolute value oj an elastic modlus oj a poly crystal cannot be acczrralely calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants, there exists a serious question about the reliability oj this modulus method in the study of textures. The vesults show that, although the absolute isallre oj Young's modulus depends strongly on the assumptions made, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the assumptions and thus can be used reliably in texture studies. Exatzples oj' using this criteriotz are illustrated in the text. NeARLY all poly crystalline materials have some preferred orientation in the arrangement of their grains and hence exhibit anisotropy in their properties. This preferred orientation is usually measured and studied by X-rays which yield detailed information on the statistical distribution of grain orientations in the form of pole figures. The usefulness of these pole figures in theories of texture formation and in predictions of properties has come to depend almost entirely on the characterization of the pole figure by one or more ideal orientations. Unfortunately, this characterization is not unique and different authors often present different ideal orientations to characterize a given pole figure. In order to distinguish between these different choices of ideal orientations, it is necessary to go beyond X-rays and consider other physical properties which reflect the texture' simply because any choice of ideal orientations must predict correctly the observed anisotropy in all physical properties. The most common example of this procedure has made use of the angular variation of Young's modulus with respect to the rolling direction in the plane of a rolled sheet.3 4 Here the anisotropy can be measured easily and it can also be calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants and the chosen ideal orientation. Unfortunately the methods used to calculate this anisotropy were chosen for their simplicity rather than for their mathematical rigor so that there exists a serious question as to the validity of conclusions reached by this modulus method. It is well-known5 that the absolute value of the Young's modulus of a polycrystalline aggregate cannot be calculated very accurately because different mathematical averages over the grains yield different results. It is one purpose of this paper to examine the effect of different averaging procedures on the calculated anisotropy of Young's modulus in the rolling plane of rolled sheets in order to see if this property can be used reliably in texture studies. This particular modulus and type of material were chosen because the modulus is easily measured and rolled sheet is technologically important. The results show that, although different averages yield different absolute values for Young's modulus, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the averaging procedure and thus can be used as a criterion to check the various ideal orientations used to characterize the X-ray pole figure. Examples of this checking procedure are given in the final section. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of using the anisotropy of Young's modulus as an indicator of texture without reference to pole figures or ideal orientations. Such a use would require that different textures yield quite different shapes for the modulus vs angle curve so that the distinction between textures would be quite clear. It also causes a serious increase in the normal wear and deterioration of all equipment with which it comes in contact. It is important to the consumer if it increases his as-received moisture. No attempt will be made in this paper to cover the entire subject of water-spraying of coal for dust control. It will be confined to discussion and data on (I) percentages of dust in bituminous coals, (2) moisture increases due to spraying for dust control in mines or plants by methods which have proved satisfactory for periods of one to five or more years, and (3) a few suggestions for research. Size and Percentage or Coal Dust The U. S. Bureau of Mines1 classifies as coal dust all bituminous coal passing a 20-mesh sieve (0.0328 in. square opening). The percentage of such dust to be found in ROM coal, of course, varies widely with the characteristics of the seam, and with the methods used in the mining and in the preparation of the coal. ROM screen analyses of 12 U. S. coals selected at random from personal files given in Table I show: A few other screen analyses examined indicating 40 pct or more of 20-mesh X 0 dust in 3/8 in. X 0 sizes were not included because of uncertainty that they were representative. The number of results in Table I is not sufficient to give a reliable estimate of the average, or of the range to be expected, but it indicates that in every case the coal dust is a relatively large percentage of the total ROM coal, and, of course, a progressively larger percentage of resultants as the larger sizes are separated for marketing.

The details of this perturbation will depend on the beterogeneity size and shape, the Permeability contrast, and the mobility ratio. This paper deals with the displacement front behavior for one, simple, mathematically tractable model: a circular permeability discontinuity and unit mobility ratio. The progress of an initially planar front is shown for four permeability contrasts: k2/k1 = 0, 5/2, 2, m. The front distortion is more pronounced than streamline and isopotential distortion and it approaches a constant shape downstream from the discontinuity. INTRODUCTION The impact of reservoir heterogeneities on oil displacing processes depends upon the variation of the heterogeneous property (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution), and the inherent stability of the displacement mechanism.l The interplay of these factors plus the impracticability, if not impossibility, of describing a natural rock system in any detail makes exact displacement front movements difficult to determine. It is useful, however, to be able to qualitatively visualize what heterogeneities will do to a displacement front. In this respect certain simple models that can be treated analytically are of value. The following analysis will show the displacement front behavior for one such model. MODEL DESCRIPTION The flow field is two-dimensional and infinite in extent. The fluid flow is single phase, steady state and unidirectional at x, y = 2 m, or before insertion of the discontinuity. A circular permea- bility discontinuity is placed at the origin. Porosity and thickness are the same within and exterior to the heterogeneity. This is exactly the same model that was used by Greenkorn et al. to check analytically Streamlines as determined by Heie-Shaw flow models and finite difference computer techniques.2 FRONT POSITION CALCULATIONS The results of displacement front calculations are presented in Figs. 1 through 4 for four different permeability contrasts: k2/kl = O, %, 2, m. The times corresponding to the front locations are the Same for the 0 and cases! and for the 1/2 and 2 cases. DURING the course of an investigation on the horizontal growth of semimetals,' it was found that crystals of Bi-Sb alloys contained many closely spaced parallel arrays of striations. These striations occurred perpendicular to the growth direction and parallel to the solid-liquid interface. We shall refer to them as transverse striations, or just striations'', to distinguish them from lineage substructures or longitudinal striations which form parallel to the growth direction and have been known to be associated with cellular structures.' Similar transverse striations have been reported previously to occur in other materials prepared by horizontal growth: metals,4 semiconductors,5 as well as their alls. - Various methods of crystal preparation have apparently little effect on the occurrence of the transverse striations. They form whether the crystals were grown by the vertical Czochralski technique, withe1' or without'3- rotation, or by the horizontal zoning methd.- Thus, the transverse striations are not limited to any one class of materials, nor to any particular method of preparation. It is likely, therefore, that all of the observed transverse striations may have some common cause. Previously, workers agreed that periodic changes in the growth rate bring about the striations. However, no agreement exists as to the origin of the growth-rate fluctuations. Some attributed the discontinuous growth to a purely external cause, such as fluctuations in the furnace temperature, jerky motions in the crystal pulling mechanism, or a nonsymmetrical temperature distribution in the melt (in the case of crystals grown by the Czochralski technique with rtation). Others looked for the cause in some fundamental property of the growth process itself. For instance, a certain degree of supercooling is required to initiate growth from the melt. But, with further growth, the degree of supercooling decreases because of the liberation of the heat of solidification at the solid-liquid interface. Thus, crystal growth would be brought to a halt until sufficient supercooling is resotred and the cycle begins again.3'11 According to this model, periodic fluctuations in the melt temperature should exist at the solid-liquid interface. Since the periodic fluctuations in growth rate would result in changes in the segregation coefficient of solute atoms, crystals containing the transverse striations may, in some cases, show a periodic impurity fluctuation along the length, resulting in a degradation of electrical properties. The resistivity striations in doped germanium'9-10 or lnsbB are well-known examples of this microsegregation. The present work was undertaken to explain the exact origin of the transverse striations, and to assess the extent of their effect on chemical homogeneity as well as on electrical properties of Bi-Sb alloy crystals. Results from our previous study of the crystal growth of Bi-Sb alloys1 indicated that the transverse striations may arise from the temperature fluctuations in the melt during growth. This paper will show that the melt temperature fluctuations are indeed responsible for the occurrence of the transverse striations. I) EXPERIMENTAL Although the transverse striations have been observed in all slow-grown Bi-Sb alloys across the entire compositional range, we selected a composition, Big3Sbs, for the present study in view of the extensive data available on the crystal growth of this alloy from a previous study.' High-purity bismuth and antimony, both a 6-nine grade by the manufacturer's emission spectrographic analysis, were used throughout. Independent mass-spectrographic analysis showed, however, that the starting materials were more nearly a 5-nine grade. each containing metallic impurities of approximately 10 ppm atomic. In zone-leveled Big5Sb5 alloys, the total metallic-impurity content was slightly lower, about 7 ppm atomic, indicating that some degree of purification was achieved during the growth. None of the electrically active impurities, such as tin and lead (acceptors) and tellurium and selenium (donors), were present in significant quantity in undoped Bi95Sb5. Typical analysis of the undoped Bi95Sb5 alloy is shown in Table I. Nonmetallic impurities, such as carbon and oxygen, were detected, sometimes as much as 100 ppm, in both the starting materials and the zone-leveled alloys: but the data were only qualitative. The major portion of the work described in this paper was performed by R. W. Young, † a graduate student in the department of Mining and Metallurgy, Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, working under a cooperative agreement between the Hardinge Conical Mill Co., the Sheffield Scientific School, and himself. Since this cooperative scheme is at present in effect in the case of a considerable number of other students in the department and since it is the hope of the school that the privilege thus extended may be utilized even more freely in the future by mining and manufacturing companies, it may not be amiss at this point to give a summary of the general plan. Briefly it is as follows: A graduate student, whose undergraduate work in this or other universities shows promise of ability to handle research work, is chosen by conference between the company and instructor involved. The aim of the company in the agreement then entered into is to obtain the solution of one or more of the technical problems with which it may be confronted, or, at the end of 1 or 2 years, to obtain as an employee a man especially trained in its work. As a means to accomplish one or both of these ends, the company furnishes the machine, apparatus, or material to be tested and pays the student during his graduate work a small salary, usually just sufficient to cover his living expenses, tuition and fees. The aim of the student is special training along a line in which he is particularly interested, the attainment of his advanced degree, and the chance to show to his future employer ability to handle such problems as may be presented to him. In return for the financial aid which he receives he agrees to devote at least half of his working time to the special problem submitted by his company. The other half is devoted to study of the collateral subjects required by the department for the granting of the degree which the student seeks. The student further agrees to enter the employ of the company in question at a wage not greater than that paid in like positions to recent graduates not specially trained and to remain with his employer at such wage for at east 1 year. If the student is to obtain a degree, the special work forming the basis of his investigation must be such as will involve real research and not mere routine manipulation. The subject is chosen by conference between the three parties to the agreement. The work is carried on under the direct supervision of the instructor involved. The school furnishes the general laboratory and library equipment essential to the pursuit of any extended investigation. In

In an attempt to determine the relative collecting ability of 18-carbon fatty acids, studies were performed on rutile in aqueous solutions of the fatty acid soaps. The preceding article reported the electro-kinetic properties; this article outlines the flotation behavior. Results of these flotation experiments are described and correlated with the electrokinetic results. Recent studies of the electrokinetic1-4 and the electrochemical5,6 properties of a few solid-liquid interfaces have provided a better understanding of the flotation process. A number of investigators have attempted to determine the relative collecting ability of 18-carbon fatty acids, but their published results (even for the same mineral) vary widely. Such lack of agreement indicated a need for further investigation. In an effort, therefore, to resolve the problem, electro-kinetic studies were made on rutile in aqueous solutions of the fatty acid soaps. Following the determination of the electrokinetic properties, the flotation behavior of rutile was studied. Results of these flotation experiments are described in this paper and are correlated with the electrokinetic results. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials: Pure -28, + 35-mesh rutile crystals were used for all flotation tests, and nitrogen-saturated conductivity water was used throughout. Sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid were added for pH regulation. The methods of purification for these materials and the preparation of the soaps have been described elsewhere. 7 Equipment: A Hallimond cell, constructed in a manner similar to that described by Fuerstenau, Metzger and Seele,8 was used for the flotation of mineral particles; however, a coarse pyrex frit was substituted for the capillary. Procedure: Purified nitrogen was led through a two- way stopcock into a graduated cylinder partly filled with water. The gas forced water from the cylinder back into a header tank until the water level in the cylinder coincided with a predetermined mark. Reversal of the stopcock then allowed water in the tank to force nitrogen into the cell until the water in the graduated cylinder rose to a second predetermined mark. In this way a constant volume of nitrogen under practically constant pressure was used for each flotation test. However, the flotation time varied, depending upon the amount of mineral floated and the pH of the solution. Rutile crystals were transferred under water from a storage bottle by a glass scoop holding 1.7 g. Consistency of the scoop samples was good, varying from a low value of 1.67 to a high of 1.74 g. The water added to the conditioning bottle during mineral transfer was drained off, and then 2 cu cm of either hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide were added. The concentration of pH regulator was adjusted to give approximately the final soap solution pH that was required. The order of addition of reagents did not affect the results within the limits of experimental error. Soap solution of the required concentration was added under nitrogen pressure to fill the bottles completely. Conditioning for 1 hr was carried out on rolls rotating at 35 rpm. After conditioning, 2.5 cu cm of solution were run off into the container of a Beckman (model G) glass electrode pH meter. The electrodes were rinsed in this solution, which was then discarded, and 2.5 cu cm more were added for pH determination. The remaining solution and the mineral were transferred to the cell; care was taken to ensure that all mineral was washed out of the bottle by the conditioning solution. With the cell back in its flotation position the liquid just reached the desired level, and the test was started immediately. The amount of agitation in the cell was kept constant, and flotation was carried out without the use of a frother. In each series of ten tests one was run with no collector added to ensure that the mineral had not become contaminated, and two were conditioned at the same pH to check reproducibility. After each test the cell was dismounted, soaked in cleaning solution, washed in hot water and then rinsed with distilled water.

QUESTIONS as to the methods of smelting ores and of obtaining metals I discussed in Book IX. Following this, I should explain in what manner the precious metals are parted from the base metals, or on the other hand the base metals from the precious'. Frequently two metals, occasionally more than two, are melted out of one ore, because in nature generally there is some amount of gold in silver and in copper, and some silver in gold, copper, lead, and iron ; likewise some copper in gold, silver, lead, id iron, and some lead in silver ; and lastly, some iron in copper2. But I will begin with gold. Gold is parted from silver, or likewise the latter from the former, whether it be mixed by nature or by art, by means of aqua valens3, and by powders which consist of almost the same things as this aqua. In order to preserve the sequence, I will first speak of the ingredients of which this aqua is made, then of the method of making it, then of the manner in which gold is parted from silver or silver from gold. Almost all these ingredients contain vitriol or alum, which, by themselves, but much more when joined with saltpetre, are powerful to part silver from gold. As to the other things that are added to them, they cannot individually by their own strength and nature separate those metals, but joined they are very powerful. Since there are many combinations, I will set out a few. In the first, the use of which is common and general, there is one libra of vitriol and as much salt, added to a third of a libra of spring water. The second contains two librae of vitriol, one of salt-petre, and as much spring or river water by weight as will pass away whilst the vitriol is being reduced to powder by the fire. The third consists of four librae of vitriol, two and a half librae of saltpetre, half a libra of alum, and one and a half librae of spring water. The fourth consists of two librae of vitriol, as many librae of saltpetre, one quarter of a libra of alum, and three-quarters of a Mbra of spring water.
