Determining the roof stability condition of underground coal mines in the Illinois Basin is sometimes very challenging. The roof stability of Illinois mines are mostly affected by two types of shales: Anna Shale and Energy Shale. These layers are sometimes weak in parallel bedding when subjected to horizontal stresses. The roof rocks in the Illinois Basin are are typically more moisture sensitive than the other coal fields. In this study the geotechnical properties of some of the shale units as well as limestone layers will be presented. The geotechnical properties of roof rocks consist of moisture content, unconfined compressive strength, slake durability, indirect tensile strength, and point load tests (Axial and Diametral). The correlation of indirect tensile strength versus diametral point load strength as well as unconfined compressive strength versus axial point load test are explored and discussed. These correlations will help in identifying the roof mass index and planning appropriate roof control measures. This study also evaluates the application of CMRR rock mass index for an Illinois coal mine.

"Coal seams in Tashan Mine of Datong Coal Group in China average 49.2 ft (15m) thick and have been mined by the top coal caving longwall mining method of large mining height. Mining height was 12.5 ft (3.8m) and the top coal caving height was 36.7 ft (11.2m). The gateroad pillar between panels was 124.6 ft (38m). During retreat mining, serious bumps occurred in the gateroads on both sides of the pillar affecting safety production. Therefore, pillarless mining was experimented.Using numerical modeling and comparative study of cases of similar mining condition, it was decided to employ a 19.7 ft (6m) wide pillar, rather than the previous 124.6 ft (38m) wide pillar. Support system for the gateroads was designed and implemented. During gateroad development, pillar failure conditions and entry deformation were monitored. Hydraulic fracturing method was employed to cut off the K3 sandstone along the entry rib so as to reduce the abutment pressure induced during retreat mining. Support reinforcement method combining grouting and advanced reinforcement methods was proposed to insure stable gateroad ahead of mining. Methane drainage and nitrogen injection were implemented to eliminate hazards associated with mine fire and spontaneous combustion.Since the development of gateroad has just completed, and retreat mining has not begun, the effectiveness of the proposed methods is unknown at this point. However, monitoring will continue until after mining. "Chain coal pillars are pans of the structure of longwall mining system that play a significant role in the stability of the entries. With mechanization and developments in the various aspects of the method, higher efficiency in optimization of the design of chain coal pillars seems appropriate. In this paper the three main methods of chain pillar design, namely the empirical analytical and numerical methods arc compared. Real data from the Tabaslran coal mines have been used in order to make the comparison process reliable. It is concluded that the most apparent advantage of the empirical method is the reliability of the results while the use of numerical methods enjoys the advantage of flexibility. On the other hand the analytical methods are complex unless simplifying assumptions arc made that can substantially decrease the accuracy of result which is thought to be the main advantage of the design method. A new method is therefore introduced here that combines all of the three presently used methods and by doing so the new method has the advantages of the three while minimizing complexities and inaccuracies associated with the use of the individual methods.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining is a high production method that can use mechanization to its full extent. Its initial development can be traced to 17th century European collieries but it was not until the second half of the 20th century with the development of self advancing support systems that the method gained popularity in the USA (Oraec. 2001). During the last decade, the production of longwall faces has increased significantly (Peng. 2006). The ability for mechanization along with good safety condition is the main reasons for such development. In the longwall mining method a good design for panel and entries on both sides, are two essential parameters. In this method, the thickness of overburden (depth of mine) nom1ally ranges from 60 to 20 m (197 to 2.7 9 ft) (Hartman, 2000) and with increasing mine depth designing for stabilizing the entries on both sides of the panel become more difficult. Thus, for safety and stability the size of chain pillar must increase. This causes the overall coal recovery to decrease and increase mining costs per ton. As such wide pillars hinder the air flow and hence ventilation costs increases too. Therefore with accurate identification of loading conditions and stress analysis. pillar that are a minimum size and sufficient safety factor are carefully designed."

"Double shearing tests were carried out on the 28 mm (1 in) hollow strand Jennmar TG cable bolt to gain a better understanding of the shearing behavior of the cable. The first test was limited to a 50 mm (2 in) travel on the testing machine and produced a shear load of 900 kN (92 t) at the maximum 50 mm (2 in) displacement. The axial load generated on the cable bolt was 238 kN (24.3 t). In the second test, the machine travel was increased to 75 mm (3 in), and first strand failure of the cable, due to shear loading, occurred at 1,354 kN (138 t) vertical load at a vertical displacement of 59 mm (2.3 in). The cable axial load was in the order of 385 kN (39.3 t). Analysis of the failure mode and loads achieved showed that the cable strands bent and the concrete crushed along the shear plane; the shear loading across the concrete and grouted cable then reached the tensile strength of the steel wires.INTRODUCTIONCable bolts were introduced to the mining industry around 1970, initially to surface mining and underground metalliferous mining and then to coal mining in the early 1980s, mainly for roadway reinforcement as a secondary means of support. Cable bolts have since been used as both primary and secondary supports. As primary support, Fuller et al. (1994) described the application of cable bolts, known as FLEXIBOLT, for strata reinforcement in both Angus Place and Ellalong Collieries, in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. As secondary support, cable bolts have also been used as cable trusses, which act to support the immediate roof in a sling-like manner (Fabjanczyk and Tarrant, 1988; Fuller, et al., 1991; O'Grady and Fuller, 1992), and for reinforcement at higher stratification and beyond the rebar bolt length, mainly for anchoring lower strata layers immediately above the coal seam to the higher, competent bedding formation above. Initially cable bolt anchorage was by cementatious grouting and, since the 1990s, by chemical resin. The dominant type of cable bolts used for secondary support in Australian underground coal mines are 588 kN (60 t) capacity cables which are point anchored, pre-tensioned and post-grouted. Point anchored refers to a cable resin anchor. The cables are tensioned on the resin anchor; then the same cable is grouted by cementatious grout pumped to ·fin the annular gap around the cable from the collar of the hole to the resin anchor. Bulbs are located within the resin anchor section for mixing of the resin chemical components and efficient anchorage. The installation of these typically 8 m long cable bolts involves a lot of manual handling of the cables, lifting of heavy hydraulic tensioners, and exposure to resin grouts. Table 1 shows the specification of various cable bolts currently marketed and installed in Australian underground coal mines."

"Safe and efficient mining of extremely inclined thick coal seams less than 20m thick is one of the new challenges in China coal industry. In recent years, the extremely inclined thick coal seams have been encountered in some old mines and western China, and currently the top coal caving longwall mining method has been successfully applied to this kind of coal seams. Accordingly, this paper studies the roof movement and its impact on shield supports of top-coal caving longwall mining in extremely inclined thick coal seams. The structure of main roof before failure was simulated by the fix-ended beam, and provided the solutions for determination of maximum compressive stress of the bottom beam end and maximum tensile stress of the top beam end. The failure mode on the upper end of working face is mainly a combination of compression and shearing, while that for the bottom end is tension and shearing. Roof fracture begins at the upper end of working and propagates downward. The shape of collapsed roof strata can be described as parabolic and divided into three segments from top to bottom, including no filling, uneven filling and densely filling segments. The roof loading conditions of no filling segment is more likely to have dynamic burst impacts.INTRODUCTIONExtremely inclined thick coal seam refers to that the dip angle of coal seam is greater than 45° and the thickness is greater than 3.5m (Wang and Zhang, 2015a; Wang and Zhang, 2015b; Wang, 2005; Xie, Gao, and Shangguan, 2005; Wu, et al., 2014; Deng and Wang, 2014; He, et al., 2015). This type of coal seams can be divided into three categories: 1. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is less than 5m and the dip angle is less than 60°, is usually mined by fully-mechanized longwall mining method. 2. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is 5 m-20m, is usually mined by top coal caving longwall method. And 3. When the thickness of extremely inclined thick coal seam is greater than 20m, it is mined by the horizontal section top coal caving longwall method. For example, the average angle ofWudong coal mine in Xinjiang province is 45°, and the thickness is 27m. Wudong coal mine is applying the horizontal section top coal caving longwall mining, producing 3 million tons annually per working face (Figure 1)."

"Comparative roof beam performance, as measured by delamination within the bolted horizon, was used to evaluate two types of roof bolt drill hole geometries in a development setting. Short encapsulation pull tests had demonstrated a higher grip factor in drill holes featuring helical grooves in the side walls in comparison to drill holes featuring continuous smooth to slightly rough walls. The study incorporated the two geometries during development mining in which fully grouted mechanically anchored bolts were installed as primary roof support.bolts were installed as primary roof support.The study site, in an entry adjacent to a longwall panel, was instrumented with extensometers and data collected during longwall retreat. Statistical analysis was conducted to validate null and alternative hypotheses used to compare drill hole geometries. Analysis yielded no statistically significant difference between drill hole geometries. Inspection of the data does reveal less delamination within the smooth walled site in comparison to the site containing grooved hole geometry.INTRODUCTIONFrom their introduction as a means of ground control over sixty years ago, roof bolts today are the primary mechanism of roof support utilized throughout mining. Whether through suspension, keying, or beam building, roof bolts are employed to reinforce the inherent strength of the strata comprising the immediate roof with the goal of creating a competent bolted horizon of sufficient load bearing capacity to be self-supporting for a given mine's design life, stress regime, and geomechanical properties.For grouted bolts in sedimentary strata, axial loading due to vertical rock movement and bending due to horizontal rock movement are the principal means of loading (Signer, 2000). Regardless of the type of bolt and extent of grouting employed, the success of any roof bolting design is determined, to a large extent, by the effectiveness of load transfer between the rock, grout, and bolt.At San Juan Mine, an underground longwall mine located in the northwestern corner of New Mexico, a number of different roof bolt types, grades, and lengths have been used over the years in an effort to optimize primary roof support. One common denominator shared throughout has been the use of full length grout. Load transfer for full length grout is achieved primarily through mechanical bonding between the grout and rock. It is this interaction that is the focus of the study described in this paper. The study assessed and compared two types of bolt hole geometries employed during gate road development at San Juan. Underground instrumentation and evaluation of the bolted roof provided the means of assessment and comparison."

"Coal and gas outburst is an extremely complex dynamic disaster in coal mine production process which will damage casualties, equipment facilities and disorder the ventilation system by suddenly ejecting a great amount of coal and gas into roadway or working face. This paper analyzed the interaction among the three essential elements of coal and gas outburst dynamic system. A stress-seepage-damage coupling model was established which can be used to simulate the evolution of the dynamical system, and then the size scale of coal and gas outburst dynamical system was investigated. Results show that the dynamical system is consisted of three essential elements, coal-gas medium (material basis), geology dynamic environment (internal motivation) and mining disturbance (external motivation). On the case of C13 coal seam in Panyi mine, the dynamical system exists in the range of 8-12 m in front of advancing face. The size scale will be larger where there are large geologic structures. This research plays an important guiding role for developing measures of coal and gas outburst prediction and prevention. INTRODUCTIONCoal and gas outbursts are a complicated mine gas dynamic phenomenon that pose a serious threat to coal mine safety production. Since the first recorded coal and gas outburst occurring in Isaac coal mine of the Lule coal field in 1843, more than 40,000 outbursts have occurred in the world. China ranks first in outburst frequency and intensity. In recent 20 years, China on average increases 37 pairs of coal mines and more than 280 times outburst accidents every year (Yan, 2013). The coal and gas outburst occurred on Oct 20, 2004 in Daping Coal Mine, Zhengzhou Coal Group, caused serious gas explosions and ejected 1,894 tons of coal into the face, causing 148 fatalities. In recent years, despite implementation of numerous control measures, coal and gas outburst still occur frequently ash mining depth and mining intensity increase. The outburst mechanisms can be summarized in the following four aspects: the gas leading role hypothesis, the geostress leading role hypothesis, the chemical effect hypothesis, and combination hypothesis. The last hypothesis has won the acceptance of most scholars who consider that an outburst is the result of combined effect of stress, gas and coal (Yu, 1992).Numerous experimental measurements and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the permeability and damage development process in coal seam. Sobczyk, et al (2011) carried out a laboratory research of the influence of sorption processes on gas stresses leading to coal and gas outbursts. Wang, et al (2013, 2015) conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the rapid decompression and desorption induced energetic failure in coal using a shock tube apparatus. Xu, et al (2006) developed a coupled gas flow and solid deformation numerical model and applied to simulate the coal and gas outbursts in underground coal mines using RFPA2D-Gasflow. An, et al (2013) and Xue (2014) analyzed major parameters and the effect of gas desorption on outburst initiation and established a model of gas migration and mechanical processes during excavation."

Underground mining requires a variety of specialized equipment. With ever-changing mining conditions and methods, some mines have had to resort to purchasing existing industrial equipment and adapting it for underground use. Since this equipment is not made for underground mining or their specific task, the result is often lost time, money, and sometimes an unsafe working condition. One such application is the setting of a CAN. A CAN is a type of cylindrical secondary roof support made from a cement composite and encased in steel. The CAN has become popular because of its simple one-piece design that can handle heaving and sagging better than other available designs. ?Because of this exceptional ability to sustain load through extended convergence and displacement, the CAN is one of the most robust and stable standing supports in use today.?It also promotes better air flow due to the size and shape of the CAN. CAN size and weight have increased over time to handle more difficult mining conditions. Significant down time and inefficiencies with existing CAN setting machines at Twentymile Coal were directly due to the item in use not being designed to be task-specific. They were undersized with very limited movement. The miners had to take extra steps and precautions when setting CANs. Maintenance delays were significant. Twentymile Coal Company realized that they required a safer, more reliable and more efficient machine to handle and set CANs, and looked for a partner to develop a new design-specific machine. They worked jointly with J.H. Fletcher® engineering and sales to design and manufacture a machine specifically made for setting CANs. The objective was to produce a machine that would handle the conditions and methods that the mine required for setting CANs during longwall retreat. The resulting design had to be safe, stable, have a wide range of motion, be ergonomic, simple to use, and easy to maintain. The machine also had to improve efficiency. The resulting machine has been operating for approximately one year at Twentymile Coal and has been proven to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency. In conclusion, with the task-specific CAN Manipulator, the mine is able to better plan daily tasks with the knowledge that the machine will be available throughout a shift, and the employees will be safer because of the machine?s ergonomics, stability and safety. This has resulted in better productivity and a safer environment.

"The Broadmeadow mine is a punch longwall mine owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. In 1999, an exploratory adit was driven as part of the feasibility study for the establishment of the mine. Subsequent development of the mine in 2004 started some distance away from the initial test adit. Ten years later, the trial adit would be used as the headgate of the 5'h longwall panel. However, multiple roof falls had occurred in a heavily jointed area over a distance of 1, 000 ft (300 m) during the past 10 years. Due to the immediate coal roof, low stress environment and time, some of these falls had progressed to 38 ft (11.5 m) above the mining floor. As a result of the extensive work involved and safety implications of trying to recover the roof falls conventionally, a strategy was developed to fill these roof falls with a cement based product from the surface, down boreholes, and redrive the roadways through the consolidated roof fall material. This paper describes the process of rehabilitating these roadways, the results when the roadway was redriven and the headgate performance as the longwall mined through the area.INTRODUCTIONBMA operates 7 open cut and 2 underground mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia producing over 50 mt per year of high quality coking coal. As a result, BMA has established over 150 miles (250 km) of open cut highwall.Broadmeadow Mine is a punch longwall mine located 22 miles (35 km) north of Moranbah in Queensland, Australia on the western limb of the Bowen Basin Coal Measures (Figure 1). Broadmeadow Mine commenced development in 2004 and began longwall operations in 2005. Broadmeadow is currently completing the fifth longwall panel and produces over 4 Mt per year of high quality coking coal. Mining is undertaken in the Goonyella Middle Seam, which is 21 to 25 ft (6.5 to 7.5 m) thick in the current mining area.The mine layout required the use of an old exploratory gateroad as the headgate of its 5th longwall. This gateroad had experienced numerous large roof falls and required extensive rehabilitation."

"In Australia, a wide roadway is commonly defined as any roadway that is driven to a width greater than 5.5 m (18 ft). These roadways are typically required to enable the installation of longwall equipment (termed installation roads); however, other applications include the need to house conveyor driveheads and pre-driven recovery roads.As a result of the increasing size of longwall equipment and mine infrastructure, in some mines, roadway widths of between 9 and 12 m (30 and 39 ft) and are being developed.Accepting that these almost always constitute strategically important and often long-term roadways, this paper considers the use of: (i) an empirical roof support design model, which is based on over one hundred case histories, (ii) various roof support design principles, and (iii) commonly accepted strata management techniques.The paper demonstrates that wide roadways can be driven and supported to an acceptable standard providing due consideration is given to the prevailing ground conditions (including the quality of the immediate and upper roof strata, the Depth of Cover and the horizontal stressfield), the final width of the roadway and the required use of the roadway.INTRODUCTIONRoof behaviour and the associated roof support requirements in wide roadways, which are roadways typically driven to a width that is greater than 5.5 m (18 ft), are controlled by a number of key geotechnical and operational factors. The recognition of these factors is an important first step in the design process and it is imperative that each is considered in conjunction with local mine site information.The main points of note in this regard can be summarised as follows:• The greater the final width of the roadway, the greater the resulting surge in roof displacement on widening - note: a) see Figure 1 for a schematic illustration of the roof displacement trends typically measured during the development of the first pass and roadway widening, b) since displacement increases with roadway width, it is always recommended that the roadway width is kept to the minimum required and c) general buckling beam theory indicates that the capacity of any beams present in the roof will reduce in inverse proportion to any increase in roadway width squared (i.e., [final width2 -first pass width2] I final width2)."

"Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 Mt annually. They produced over 400 Mt in 2015, over 99% of which is from open-cut mines. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse year by year: the stripping ratio is increasing, the economy is worsening, and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is not being maintained. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. In consideration of growing need, our research program is conducting a study on the potential for an underground coal mine in Indonesia. This research is being done through the roadway heading research program, which is looking into developing an underground coal mine from an open pit highwall. The greatest challenge for underground coal mine development in Indonesia is the maintaining the safety of the mine roadway during heading because the roof rock is exceptionally weaker. There is a potential for heading below mobile, unconsolidated soft sediment, and instead mining a deep area. This increases the likelihood for problems in the stability of the support system due to increasing ground pressure. The ground behavior around the roadway was measured using telltales, extensometers, and convergence measurements. Moreover, rock property tests were also conducted on exploration drilling cores. Based on the geological dates and monitoring data, a series of numerical analyses were conducted in order to assess support needs in the main roadway under different depths. Results of numerical analyses indicate that the current arch support design is effective when the mining depth is lower than 100m. However, if the mining depth is larger than 100m, the current arch support design should be changed to include the application of higher yield strength material, shorter spacing, etc. Moreover, bolting may also be useful if ground pressure is high locally. Based on a series of measurement data of ground and support behavior, a control criterion for main roadways under weak geological conditions is proposed in this paper."

"Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan. Almost all the coal is produced from open cut mines. However, a great deal of coal is left in the highwalls of the mined-out pits. The use of highwall mining systems has increasingly come into play in the U.S. and Australia, when overburden depth exceeds economical recovery in an open cut mine. However, the stability of the highwalls is always a major safety concern in such mining. This paper describes the characteristics of the highwall mining system and discusses the appropriate highwall mining system for use in Indonesia.INTRODUCTIONIndonesia produces over 200 Mt of clean coal and is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 32 Mt of coal annually. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. More open cut mines will be developed and more coal will be mined in order to fill the great demand both in Indonesia and the rest of the world.In open cut mines in Indonesia, there are many sites where mining operations have developed long highwalls that have been abandoned due to the current economics. Mining operations have been transferred to lower stripping ratio blocks of coal or overlying seams. In some cases, coal lies buried beneath spoil heaps or is covered with mud and water. It is estimated that there is a great deal of coal beneath abandoned and working highwalls. Considering these situations, it seems to be worth introducing highwall mining systems into Indonesian open cut mines.Final highwalls of open cut mines can form the starting point for other mining methods, such as highwall or underground mining. In its basic application, highwall mining is a technique utilized after an open cut portion of a reserve has been mined, sometimes prior to the introduction of underground mining (Seib, 1993). In this system, the coal seam is mined by remotely operated equipment, such as an auger machine or a modified continuous miner incorporated into a highwall mining system. The major problems with highwall mining systems are less coal recovery due to leaving coal as the pillars and the instability of openings and highwalls due to the pillar and roof failures."

"India’s tryst with mechanized longwall coal mining started with the introduction of the first self-advancing powered support longwall (PSLW) face at Moonidih Colliery of Jharia Coalfield in 1978 and at Godavarikhani (GDK)7 Incline of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in 1983. During the last 37 years, about 30 longwall units in Coal India, Ltd., (CIL) and 10 longwall units in SCCL have been introduced with powered roof supports of varying capacity, ranging from 280 to 800 tonnes, in many mines in India under varying geological and geotechnical conditions. The majority of the longwall faces in India have been worked under relatively shallow cover (up to 200m), and significant strata control problems have been encountered due to poor caveability of the roof, inadequate capacity of the supports, a lack of knowledge on longwall caving mechanisms, less than adequate strata monitoring systems, and the non-availability of quality spare parts, etc. This has resulted in structural damage to supports and increased downtime of the equipment, thereby making longwall mining in India a case of technology failure. Energy demand for a developing country like India with a population of 1.2 billion is huge, and the thrust on increasing coal production continues. However, the share of coal production from underground mines in India continues to decline (current share is around 6%) because of absence of successful mass production technology in underground coal mining. Under this backdrop, a high-capacity longwall with state-of-the-art technology was introduced in 2014 at Adriyala Longwall Project (ALP) of SCCL for the first time in Indian Coal Mining Industry. The first longwall panel (LWP) has been completed successfully. This paper highlights the major geotechnical challenges encountered during development of the longwall gate roads due to the presence of two overlying clay bands, significant in-situ horizontal stresses and the experience of using rigid (welded) steel wire mesh with resin-anchored roof bolts. Efforts have been made to analyze longwall weighting and caving behavior, such as main and periodic weightings, the effect of front and side abutment pressures, and the behavior of gate roadway support systems under immediate friable weak roof with overlying massive sandstone."

"Inherent existence of different rooms (openings) along the extraction line in a depillaring panel provides an easy path for the goaf to encroach the working area. Each of these openings in a mechanized depillaring (MD) operation along the extraction line is supported by the roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) to restrict the goaf encroachment. Different field studies by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) found that the RBBLS works effectively during the depillaring under the shadow of stable surrounding ribs/fenders only. It is observed that, generally, these natural supports experience high value of induced stresses after a large amount of void creation inside the goaf. The induced stress creates spalling/loosening of the sides of the natural supports. Field studies also found that the positions of the RBBLS at the goaf edge need to be adjusted according to the depth of this spalling/ loosening. However, a systematic study in field for the correct positioning of the breaker line as per the spalling/loosening under different site conditions is difficult. Therefore, on the basis of the data and guidance provided by these field investigations, a detailed parametric investigation was conducted in the laboratory on simulated models for an effective design of RBBLS in a MD panel. FLAC3D is used for the simulation of the depillaring, and the available empirical formulations for Indian coalfields are used for subsequent calibration. An analysis of stress redistribution for different stages of the MD in simulated models showed the significance of the nature of overlying strata/induced stress for the RBBLS design. Discussing some results of field studies, this paper presents results of the laboratory investigations for an effective design of the RBBLS.INTRODUCTIONContinuous Miner (CM)-based mechanized depillaring (MD) is an important issue for Indian coalfields, where huge amounts of coal are locked up in standing pillars (Dixit and Mishra, 2010). Considerable variations in site conditions of these developed pillars bring a number of technical challenges into consideration during their final extraction. One of these challenges is goaf encroachment/overriding during caving of the competent roof strata. Goaf encroachment/overriding can effectively be controlled, mainly, by suitable design of natural supports (rib/snook/fender). However, there is a requirement of applied supports against the immediate roof as a considerable portion of this roof is exposed due to the presence of different openings along the line of extraction. These applied supports act as a fulcrum at the goaf edge between the working area and the goaf to facilitate the break out of the hanging roof inside the goaf. This is called breaker line support. An effective breaker line support is important for the efficiency of a depillaring operation. Generally, MD adopts roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) at the goaf edge (Singh, et al., 2014). For the first time in India, roof bolts were applied at the goaf edge as RBBLS in a CM-based MD (Leeming, 2003). In the beginning, three rows of roof bolts were installed as primary and secondary breaker lines support. On the basis of the observations of instrumented bolts, only two rows of roof bolts were used as secondary RBBLS (Ram, et al., 2014). Now, most of the MD operations in India are using only two rows of bolts as RBBLS (Table 1). However, the strata mechanics studies at different MD operations showed interesting characteristics resulting from this support (Ram, et al., 2015)."

In polish coal mining due to specificity of seams lying the multiple extraction is used. In this kind of mining, it is essential to take into account all geological and mining conditions which have an influence on stability and functionality of workings during their using. In view of above, for one of polish coalmines, by mean of Phase2 program, the numerical calculation were made for assessment of the influence of advancing excavation front on convergence of roadway located 30 meters above longwall was analysed. In order to verify developed prognosis, in analyzed roadway the underground investigations in scope of convergence measurement and changes of load exerted on working support were carried. As a result of these investigations it was found that real convergence on certain part of roadway was significantly larger then determined in prognosis. Additional calculations and analysis showed that the main cause of differences was underestimation of influence of dynamic load, which was an effect of numerous low energetic rockmass tremors. These tremors, related to excavated longwall, were located in close proximity of roadway in its part where the biggest convergence occurred. In current practice, in this type of convergence prognosis, the maximal value of dynamic load exerted on roadway resulted from single rockmass tremor is taken into consideration. Quantitative consideration of all tremors including their location is impossible at the stage of convergence prognosis because of lack of this type of data. This paper presents results of roadway convergence prognosis compared to results of underground investigation. Conclusions formulated on that base allow in future similar designing works for obtaining more accurate results.

"It has been the practice in Europe to extract the most economic seams first: taking the seams sequentially, top down, to avoid operating within the fractured strata formed by the subsidence trough above previously mined coal seams. In the 1990s, the UK coal industry found itself at a number of sites having to operate over one or more previously mined seams. This led to specific geotechnical challenges with respect to maintaining economic, safe and stable rectangular roadways with rock-bolted support.Within this paper, the current challenges and mitigation strategies of overmining in the UK are described following the completion of a -three-year European Commission-funded project in 2015. The challenges and mitigation strategies are related to:• A case study with overmining of older workings of variable geometry;• Numerical modeling for overmining layout and support design; and• A case study site planning mine layout when considering future overmining.INTRODUCTIONAt the first case study site, case histories were examined for a mine operating at a depth of approximately 700 meters where five longwall panels were extracted above workings 35-40 m below. The overmining of various extraction geometries below led to challenging conditions in areas of high vertical stress concentration. It was found that results from one longwall panel could be suitably used to predict behaviour in a subsequent panel. The experience was used to update previously existing guidelines on the positioning of roadways in relation to subsidence troughs. Existing guidelines recommended that only as a last resort should longwalls be planned to retreat over narrow pillars, or from solid ground into a subsidence trough. Existing guidelines regarding the layout of overmining panels are conservative, and new work indicates that such multi-seam geometries are possible with appropriate support management strategies."

"Indonesia is a major coal producer, the vast majority being sourced from opencast operations. Underground production to date has been constrained by unfavorable ground conditions and limited local experience. However, an underground trial in East Kalimantan has now shown that it is possible to successfully extract coal and mine safely, despite the technical challenges.A trial drift mine has been worked to a current maximum depth of 160 m (525 ft) in a dipping coal seam. The 3 m (10 ft) thick coal seam is overlain by very weak mudstone and sandstones. The mudstone forming the immediate seam roof strata proved a particular challenge given its adverse reaction to water and overall friability.Rock bolts were used as roadway support, the system being carefully selected to optimize effectiveness. An innovative method of partial extraction was trialed, which demonstrated the potential for productive mining despite the ground conditions. Roof falls have occurred within the working area, and roadways demonstrate reasonable stability over time.Throughout the course of the trial, strata behavior monitoring has been an important aspect, and a comprehensive ground control monitoring system is in place. This has enhanced the ability to increase the level of support where required and to react to deteriorating conditions. In addition, monitoring information has allowed a quantitative assessment to be made of the technical feasibility of future full-scale mining.INTRODUCTIONWith current production at over 200 million tons, much of this destined for overseas markets, Indonesia is the second largest exporter of coal (Ritschel and Schiffer, 2007). The majority of the coal is sourced from the Kalimantan coalfields. Mining is predominately opencast, yet in recent years there have been attempts made to introduce underground operations. This move would permit continued access to good quality seams that are beyond the reach of viable opencast mining."

Moranbah North is a modern longwall operation mining premium coking coal in the Northern Bowen Basin, Central Queensland. Australia Moranbah North Coal (MNC) is owned and operated by Anglo Coal Australia. Extracting approximately 4.5m of the Goonyella Middle seam using a single longwall, the mine produces 5 to 6 Mt per annum. The weak coal (4.5 MPa), low strength laminated immediate roof, and strong upper roof sandstones, make operation of the longwall at depths in excess of 250m geotechnically challenging. In the past, there have been a number of production delays due to geotechnical issues. Roof instability resulted in a long stoppage on Longwall 105, and the eventual relocation of the face further outbye in the block. (Figure 1). When mining commenced in LW106, there was a requirement for uninterrupted production, particularly in the more demanding inbye area of the panel. Following discussions with a number of Geotechnical experts, it was decided to narrow the face, and test the theories of reduced face weighting due to spanning of the goaf across the panel. A new on line chock monitoring system, and microseismic monitoring was installed in order to characterise the difference in the rockmass response, as the panel width changed from 175m, to 265m, and then 300m. The nature of the goaf formation and impacts on face loading and production are discussed, having the unique opportunity of three different face widths within the same area.

"Previously, in 2013, a laboratory version of the computer code ARMPS-LAM, introduced at the 32""d International Conference of Ground Control in Mining, successfully integrated the laminated overburden model of LaModel into an ARMPS-style pillar stability analysis. The ARMPS-LAM analysis has now been fully integrated into the ARMPS program allowing users to more accurately classify the stability of a given mine design utilizing a laminated overburden model for the determination of pillar loading within theAMZ. ,This paper introduces the new Windows-based ARMPS-LAM program. The program's ease of use, output result generation, and limitations are highlighted through the parametric analysis of three hypothetical case studies where traditional ARMPS output is compared to output generated by LaModel. As mining operations continue to produce at greater depths and in more complex geometric and geological conditions, flexible and efficient analyses of mine stability for underground room and pillar mining has become more and more essential. The ARMPS-LAM program provides the mining industry with an empirically backed, numerical design tool for the evaluation of underground room and pillar mine plans.INTRODUCTIONIn the Southern Appalachian coal fields of the United States, retreat room-and-pillar methods have allowed mining operations to maintain high rates of production in the face of adverse geologic conditions and shrinking coal reserves. Over the years, research has been dedicated to understanding and mitigating mining-related dangers due to second mining practices, such as: pillar squeezes, floor heave, roof falls, pillar bumps, etc. However, as mining operations continue at deeper depths and with more complex geometric and geologic conditions, there is an inherent industry need for more accurate, flexible, and faster evaluations of stability for underground room-and-pillar mining."

Backfilling using coal waste is not a novel means for waste disposal throughout the world; yet, backfilling using a high density (paste) backfill is relatively new, except in Germany and Poland. One of the main benefits of a high density backfill, as opposed to a low density (slurry) backfill, is that, if placed at a low permeability and low moisture content, the risk of water table contamination can be relatively low. In addition, if paste backfill can be placed cost effectively, environmental benefits are huge because the surface impoundment footprint can be greatly reduced or even eliminated. This is especially true in room-and-pillar applications. In its current state, backfilling is considerably more costly than surface disposal. This is mainly because paste, as opposed to slurry, significantly increases backfill placement costs; however, this could be offset by increasing the achievable extraction rate. Overall, such a system could potentially improve the public?s image of coal mining in the US for a myriad of reasons. This paper discusses a proposed backfill system for a typical room-and-pillar coal mine in the Illinois Basin of the US and clearly shows the technical advantages, although costs are still higher with fill. The cost differential will likely reduce over time, in favor of the backfill option, as costs of traditional surface disposal increase, due mainly to ever-restrictive disposal regulations.
