TBMs can last for decades and be rebuilt project after project with proper maintenance. How successful can rebuilt TBMs be? At the DigIndy Tunnel System in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, a rebuilt TBM was used to great effect. The 6.2 m diameter Main Beam, originally manufactured in 1980, bored 40+ km of tunnels and set three world records in its size class of 6 to 7 m, including a best month of 1,754 m. In this paper, the authors analyze the TBM rebuild, performance and lessons learned to make recommendations for future projects seeking to use rebuilt TBMs over long distances.

INTRODUCTION The development of nuclear industry in Taiwan requires an increasing supply of uranium. Uranium recovery from phosphate ores, becomes an important item of the R & D programs. Many countries have already started such a program. USA has set up an industrial-scale production plant; South Africa, Israel, Morocco and other countries have also engaged in the development of extraction technology of uranium from phosphate ores and started setting up the production plant. In Taiwan, a feasibility study of establishing the production plant was started in 1977. A pilot plant was completed, tested, and operated in 1979. The main source material. - phosphate ores is obtained from China Phosphate Company. The annual yield of the pilot plant has been planned to be one ton of ammonium diuranate (ADU). The Health Physics Division of Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER), Atomic Energy Council of Republic of China (ROC AEC), is responsible for the radiation safety control of the plant. The purpose of the radiation safety control is to collect radiation safety information of the plant of this type, to evaluate possible radiation hazards to the personnel, and to analyze the radiation safety of the immediate environment adjacent to the plant. Furthermore, the information and experience obtained are used as the basis for applying radiation safety control to the production plant. The main emphases of the radiation safety control are therefore the arrangement of radiation safety control areas and the collection and evaluation of the health physics data. This report includes the past one and half years' experiences of the radiation safety control of the pilot plant, the planning of the production plant with an annual yield of 10 ton ADU, and considerations given in improving the radiation safety control of the production plant. PILOT PLANT AND ITS OPERATION PROCESS The pilot plant occupies an area of 350 m2 and is a two-story rectangular building. Exits are provided by a front and a rear door. An additional small door at the central right side of the building is connected to the maintenance area located outside the main building. The interior of the building is divided into interconnected offices, laboratories and process area (Figs. 1 and 2). A stairway to the process area of the second floor is located in the central part of the first floor. The second floor offices are accessible by the additional front and rear stairways. The main process area of the first floor is furnished with plastic floor, and the second floor with poriferous iron-grid floor. The building is not furnished with centralized air-conditioning system. Individual air conditioners are, however, available to some laboratories. Because the back door of the building is frequently open, the product storage room is provided with a blower to maintain good ventilation. Natural uranium contents of phosphoric acid solution vary in the range from 0.07 to 0.11 kg/m3. The process consists mainly of the uranium concentration cycle and the purification cycle. A flow diagram of the process is shown in Fig. 3. CONSIDERATIONS GIVEN FOR RADIATION SAFETY CONTROL AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RADIATION CONTROLLED AREAS The radiation safety control of the pilot plant is carried out on the basis of the considerations listed below:1,2 1) Since the wet process is adopted, and the flow of the radioactive material is confined to closed pipes and containers, air contamination is therefore not too much of concern. 2) The concentrations of radioactive material of the whole process are mostly less than 10 ppm. An exception is the final ADU product after precipitation and centrifugal separation, which contains up to 50% natural uranium. Why did it fail? My first reaction when assigned this topic was to say: because somebody "goofed"--then thank you all for letting me say those few words, then promptly sit down. All of you have been bandying this problem around for many years--so all of a sudden I should come up with the solution. Well, While I might not provide you with your particular answer, I think I can show you some of the resolutions to it. Somewhere along your path of experience you may have discovered that a good formula for starting a fight is to tell a group of dedicated (Nordberg Crusher) users they should be using (Allis-Chalmers), or a group of (Allis-Chalmers) 'users they should be a (Traylor). Now, if you really want a melee, get both groups together and tell them they should be using a (Stedman Cage Mill). This is one sure way you can learn how great minds arrive at logical, well thought-out conclusions, based on all the relevant facts. Why did it fail? I could go on for hours giving you specific reasons why. One of my engineering professors used to start his new class off each year by writing on the blackboard--four and two, then turn to the class and ask: What is the problem? One brave scholar would venture to answer 8. His head would shake no. Another would dare 6. Again, a head shake. Now that the ball had gotten rolling, a number would vocally decide it had to be two, which produced only another shake of the head--no. All of them had missed the question he had asked : What is the problem? What he had gotten ,were some of the possible answers to the problem.

Entry stability in coal mines is dependent on geologic conditions and engineering controls. Most engineering controls in ground control are predictable and standardized for typical geologic conditions. However, geologic anomalies may exist that are difficult to detect with traditional core hole drilling. Borescopes offer a cost-efficient way to gather more geologic data between core holes. Additional data obtained from borescope results provide a clearer picture to enhance detection of hazardous conditions due to geologic anomalies. The equipment, methods, and analysis of borescope results provide geomechanical engineers with a clear understanding of strata behavior and the best information to implement roof control plans and supplemental support to enhance miner safety and health. INTRODUCTION Borescope technology has changed very little since its inception. However, the idea to use borescopes to examine roof strata started with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1979 with the production of a fiber-optic borescope (FitzSimmons, et al., 1979). The first documented use of a borescope in the coal mining industry began during the 1980s in Australia by researcher John Shepherd. Shepherd’s idea was to use a borescope to collect a series of data points from the roof lithology and compose a geologic cross section. The cross section was then used to identify key features that suggested the beginnings of roof failure. The features Shepherd identified were bedding plane separations in the roof and low angle, extension, and tensile failures. Shepherd also suggested that the borescope findings could be used for geologic mapping for lithological variation, fracture distribution, and determining if supplemental roof support was needed (Shepherd, et al., 1986). In the United States the first publication about borescope usage for coal mine stability assessment was by Su and associates in 1999, who specifically related the combination of using borescope, geophysical, and corehole data to produce geologic hazard maps (Su et al., 1999). This work directly linked the usage of a borescope with the design of supplemental roof support. The use of borescopes in mining was adopted industry wide by the 2000s. Operator case studies were being published using borescopes to aid in supplemental support recommendations and hazard mapping. An Australian study published in 2007 based the optimization of secondary support after each longwall pass on the results of borescope data. The study stated that the borescope was an invaluable tool for understanding roof behavior (Black, et al., 2007). In 2009, a publication by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) took the concept of borescoping one step further. The work centered around creating a roof quality index (RQI) for limestone mines based on borescope data. The RQI attempted to assign a ranking to establish the nature of the roof and its stability (Ellenberger 2009). In theory, this would have been a very useful tool, but the RQI system has not been widely adopted in the industry.

Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain's famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,' and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand

California’s San Diego County Water Authority provides a safe and reliable water supply to more than 3.3 million residents through twenty-four member agencies. The 2nd Aqueduct pipelines, a critical infrastructure consisting of three large-diameter pipelines, are susceptible to natural threats including streambed erosion, channel migration, and seismic hazards within the 3,840-foot-long Moosa Canyon segment of the alignment. A state-of-good repair, hazard mitigation, and resiliency project is progressing to ensure uninterrupted water supply. For each pipeline, a segment will be replaced by tunneling. A high-level project development approach is presented, focusing on alternative selection, environmental and geotechnical considerations, and operations and maintenance constraints.

At its Technical Development Center in Tucson, Arizona, the UOP Mineral Sciences Division operates a completely integrated pilot plant testing a proprietary process for the extraction of nickel from limonite/saprolite ores. The process is based on the reductive roast- ammonia leach procedure now employed in several plants around the world. The process improvements are such that nickel extractions well above that experienced in these processes are possible, particularly on the more garnieritic/saprolitic ores. This paper will describe the process and the results of process development studies. The data show that pilot plant results confirm those obtained on the smaller laboratory and bench scales of experimentation.

The Subtropolis Mine is a room-and-pillar mine extracting the Vanport Limestone near Petersburg, OH. In February 2018, mine management began implementing a new mine layout to better control the negative effects of excessive levels of horizontal stress. Almost immediately, the conditions in the headings improved. Conversely, and as expected, stress-related damage was concentrated within crosscuts. Over the last 18 months, the mine operator has diligently experimented with different techniques/methods to lessen the impact of the instabilities in the outby crosscuts. The range of controls used by the mine operator include angled crosscuts, crosscut offsets, increased distance between crosscuts, arched crosscuts, cable-bolted crosscuts, altered blasting pattern, and windows. A window is used to resist roof deformation by leaving a strong brow of roof rock within the crosscuts.

This paper describes the development of a new method and device for determining the in-situ mechanical properties of rock masses. The method involves a self-recording mechanical deformation gauge for sensing-recording she deformation of the borehole wall when loaded hydraulically. The self-recording feature of the gauge eliminates the difficult technical problem of transmitting signals over very long cables for measurements at great depths. Adopting a mechanical gauge instead of electronic, electrical, optical or grid techniques eliminates delicate instrumentation and installation problems. Moreover, mechanical gauges are inherently rugged and suitable for use in severe borehole conditions including very high temperatures. The technique was tested in limestone, basalt and granite specimen. The calculated mechanical property values for 1 the tests agree with those obtained by conventional testing methods. The self-recording mechanical deformation gauge has a minimum reading of 50 micro inches (1.27 x 10-3mm), comparable with electrical resistance strain gauges, capable of reading deformations over a range of 0.25 inches (6.35mm). The sensitivity, ease and accuracy of the method recommends it highly for in-situ rock modulus measurements.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.

Although past investigations (2, 5)have been conducted to determine crushing relationships, no program which covered a broad range of crushing conditions had been conducted. The previous studies appear to concentrate on small segments of the overall picture and did not fullfill our desired information objectives. The Crusher Variables Research Program conducted at the Mineral Research and Test Center (MRTC) of Rexnord, due to the broad range of variables utilized in a production size crusher, is believed to be the most comprehensive study of its kind as of this date. The principles developed by the Symons brothers in 1925, when they patented the cone crusher as we know it today, are still being used in the machine known as the Symons Cone Crusher, During the development of this novel crushing concept, a technique known as the fall of material (called the Bouncing Ball Theory1 by some) was used to determine an idea as to the proper head angle, eccentric and speed of eccentric rotation, The final variables used for the Symons Cone Crusher design were, therefore, the logical conditions to start with and use as a reference against which other variables could be compared.

Extensive research on the beneficiation of Florida dolomitic phosphate pebble has been carried out by Lianyungang Design and Research Institute of China (CLDRI) in recent years. Test results indicate that the fine-particle flotation process could be used to effectively recover the phosphate values from Florida high-dolomite phosphate resources. With the CLDRI fine-particle flotation technology, a phosphate concentrate with 31% P2O5 and less than 1% MgO could be obtained from a flotation feed containing 25.8% P2O2 and 2.2% MgO at an overall P2O5 recovery of up to 85%.

Past research showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture. Rock dust must disperse with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion. Non-treated rock dust readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while anti-caking treated rock dusts can remain dry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health contracted the Central Mining Institute in Poland to conduct large-scale testing in their Experimental Mine Barbara to determine if a treated rock dust can be as effective as non-treated rock dust in attenuating or quenching coal dust explosions under the same experimental conditions. INTRODUCTION One of the goals of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to conduct research to reduce the risk of mine disasters and provide workplace solutions to reduce the risks associated with accumulations of combustible and explosible materials; the most common form of which is the generation of coal dust during the mining process and its subsequent distribution downwind. Dispersible rock dust is a primary defense for preventing coal dust explosion propagation in underground coal mines, and its properties are defined in 30 CFR 75.2. “Pulverized limestone, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, shale, adobe, or other inert material, preferably light colored, 100 percent of which will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 70 percent or more of which will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the particles of which when wetted and dried will not cohere to form a cake which will not be dispersed into separate particles by a light blast of air; and which does not contain more than 5 percent combustible matter or more than a total of 4 percent free and combined silica (SiO2), or, where the Secretary finds that such silica concentrations are not available, which does not contain more than 5 percent of free and combined silica.” An earlier NIOSH investigation of rock dust revealed two significant concerns with the supply of rock dust to U.S. coal mines: 1) insufficient particles <200 mesh (75 μm) and 2) all rock dusts when wetted and dried formed cakes and were not easily dispersed with a light blast of air (1). Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture (2). Rock dust must also be dispersible in concert with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion (3, 4, 5, 6). Non-treated rock dust, however, readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while a rock dust treated with long-chain fatty acids (such as stearic acid) can remain dry and dispersible. Stearin-treated rock dust has been used in British coal mines (7) and is commonly used in Polish coal mines.

There are numerous techniques and predictive models used by geologists and mining engineers to define coal reserves and plan mines. The traditional reserve estimation methods commonly used include the isopach, triangular, polygonal, inverse-distance weighting, weighted-moving-average, and trend-surface methods. Geostatistically-based estimation techniques are now being examined by many geologists and mine planners as a superior alternative to these traditional methods. With today&apos;s coal mine development costs often exceeding $100 million, and power generation $1 billion, it is logical that a technique that can indicate the degree of confidence associated with a reserve estimate (fuel supply), and thus also the degree of risk, is highly desirable to the coal producer, the financiers, and those desiring to commit to coal utilization under short or long-term supply arrangements.

This paper describes an investigation that MS carried out using the three-dimensional, stress analysis computer program "NFOLD" to assess pillar stability in relation to existing mining conditions and the proposed layout of future stopes. The stress analyses were designed to assess the present stability of the mine (particularly the pillars adjacent to the shaft), the change in pillar stresses as mining proceeds, and the optimum stope geometry to minimize ground control problems. The existing conditions were modelled first, and rock mass strengths were adjusted until a good agreement between the predicted and observed conditions was obtained. Analyses of alternative mining layouts, based on the calibrated rock mass strengths, were then compared. The paper describes the results and the conclusions of the study.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.

Federal Regulations require that coal producers conduct a written, in-house investigation with every lost time injury accident. Besides their obvious value in accident prevention, competently conducted investigations can provide a number of additional benefits to include positive supervisor involvement, the control of rising worker&apos;s compensation costs and a measure of protection from civil/criminal proceedings. The paper describes such topics as MSHA minimum requirements, investigator selection and training, accident site procedures, witness interview techniques and the management review process. The reader is also presented with a number of information resources available through MSHA, the National Safety Council and other sources.
