Ground falls represent a significant hazard at underground mines in the stone, sand and gravel (SSG) sector in the United States. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting detailed investigations into the complex loading conditions at underground stone mines operating in challenging conditions. This paper presents the application of numerical modeling to analyze pillar and roof stability at a dipping underground limestone mine.

Computer-assisted instruct ion is now being used in areas as diversified as training handicapped children to preflight simulation for airline pilots. This paper reports on two courses that have been developed at SDSM&T on the PLATO system for miner safety training. Advantages of computer-assisted instruct ion for this type of training is discussed. (Figures show examples of actual use.) A discussion will be given on other applications such as maintenance troubleshooting, training of engineers and managers at remote sites and training of local people for working in the mine.

The Rødsand Gruber mining company is a subsidiary of the Norwegian industrial corporation Elkem AS, and its mine is situated in the northwestern part of southern Norway. The ore from this mine is a relatively low grade, magnetite ore with a small amount of vanadium. The ore bodies are very irregular in shape, resulting in a high amount of waste rock intrusion in the stopes. The annual underground production in the mines is approximately 1 million t. Because of varying dimensions of the ore bodies, both transverse and longitudinal stopes are employed. The inclination of an ore body is usually 1.04 to 1.59 rad (60 to 90°), and the horizontal width varies up to 100 m. Sublevel stoping has been the traditional mining methods in this mine. Until a few years ago, the ore was primarily blasted using horizontal blasthole fans drilled from Alimak raises. Recently, however there has been an increasing demand for a les expensive mining method. Alternate systems were considered, and finally a method based upon large blasthole stoping was found to be the most suitable. GENERAL LAYOUT The general layout of a stope is shown in Fig. 1 As with all the figures in this chapter, only the prin¬ciples of the method are emphasized and the details may not be valid for any particular site in the mine. In transverse stopes, the horizontal width of the ore determines the length of the stopes. The average length is approximately 50 m, the width of the stopes is 20 m, and there is a 10-m wide vertical pillar between. The distance between the main levels is 60 m. Usually a horizontal (sill) pillar 10 m thick is left below the mucking level. Each stope is first undercut along the entire stope length. This undercut is made with 50.8-mm (2-in.) diam drill holes in a fan pattern. At the moment this is being done by a trackless Atlas Copco Promec jumbo equipped with two Cop 130 pneumatic rock drills. The drill drift is 4 X 4 m, and the crater is 20 m high. This leaves a 36-m stope height to mine with large blastholes. To achieve a fair portion of vertical drilling withlarge blastholes, there are two parallel drill drifts at the top of each stope. These drifts are 4 m high and 9 m wide, separated by a 4-m wide pillar in the middle of the stope. To ease the drilling of perimeter holes, the drifts extend 1 m into the vertical pillar on each side of the stope. The pillar will thus be only 8 m wide on the drill drift level, but 10 m wide down the rest of the stope.

To many people, the word cartel implies illegality. However, although it is illegal in the US, cartels are an effective and legal way to conduct business elsewhere in the world. But be-fore we continue, what is a cartel? The American Heritage Dictionary defines a cartel as "a combination of independent business organizations formed to regulate production, pricing, and marketing of goods by the members." However, that definition does not fit many of the "cartels" we are examining today. The International Tin Council is an organization of both consumer and producer nations--no individual companies are represented. The buffer stock is used by the ITC to provide protection for both producers and consumers, and has only been in effect since 1955. (Earlier tin producers groups date back to 1921 when the Federated Malaysia States and the Netherlands East Indies formed the first intergovernmental tin agreement, known as the Bandoeng Pool, which only lasted three years.) The International Bauxite Association only dates back to 1974 when seven nations--Australia, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Guinea, Guyana, Haiti and Jamaica--agreed to three main objectives: 1) to promote the orderly and rational development of the bauxite industry; 2) to secure a fair and reasonable return on the raw material for the benefit of the nations' citizens; and 3) to safeguard the interests of member countries in relation to the international bauxite industry. 1 Again this organization is composed of nations, not separate firms. This generally follows the pattern that the oil producing countries (OPEC) chose since the nations' mineral product-ion is controlled and often owned by the state. However, the group I am going to discuss fits the more classic mode of a cartel. The informal lead-zinc producers' cartel can be dated as far back as to Roman times when Romans are said to have imposed a quota system on British lead production to safeguard their Spanish lead mines. Also, the lead-zinc producers group is composed only of individual companies, not do not include any lead-zinc consumers. Finally, the activities of the group are not open to public scrutiny, and details are only now available due to a leak in the Australian government. At this point, it is necessary to split the two metals since while many of the members of the cartels produce both lead and zinc they do have different histories and marketing arrangements.

In the construction of recent subsurface projects, particularly mined openings and transit systems, it has been apparent that final costs were often greater than first expected. Because many overruns result from alleged differing site conditions, there was reason to suspect that pre-bid geotechnical investigations were inadequate for predicting subsurface geology. In 1982, nine federal agencies involved in constructing underground facilities funded the National Academy of Sciences' U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNC/TT) in an effort to evaluate and clarify the relationship between geological knowledge and construction costs. That committee formed the special Subcommittee on Geological Site Investigations, which spent more than two years studying underground projects by examining contract documents and geologic reports, making site visits, and interviewing owners, designers and contractors. The study ultimately encompassed 84 mined tunnels and chambers and three deep shafts in the United States and eastern Canada. Data collected on geologic exploration, design and construction were analyzed and conclusions reached concerning whether and how site investigations need to be improved. The results of the study are published in two volumes by the National Academy of Sciences. Due to the recent completion date of the main report, it was not possible to prepare a summary for inclusion in the RETC Proceedings. A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the potential for recovering anthracite from coal preparation-plant tailings. The study included washability analyses, cyclone simulations and froth flotation testing Samples were collected from either the tailings streams or the slurry ponds of five anthracite-cleaning plants. From each sample, a washability analysis was conducted on the 28x100 and 100x200-mesh fractions. Using the above data, along with published partition data, simulations were performed with various cyclone-staging arrangements for both water-only and dense-medium cyclones treating the 28x200-mesh fractions. Separate froth -flotation tests were conducted on the 28x100- and 100x200-mesh fractions from three of the plant samples. The washability, simulation and flotation results are presented as grade-yield curves.

The situation of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, or Cominco, may be somewhat unique in that the Company is not only a manufacturer of ammonium nitrate, but as a mining company is a major user of its own product. This situation has resulted in highly successful application of ammonium nitrate-oil explosives. Several noteworthy techniques have been developed and others have been improved. Use of this material in the mining industry has led ammonium nitrate producers to adopt the term nitro-carbo-nitrate or INN for ammonium nitrate-oil blends. A small blending plant at Cominco's largest mining property, the Sullivan Mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is producing more than 80% of all the explosive used at the Sullivan, and is supplying two other Cominco mines. Application has required intensive research to determine the best forms of ammonium nitrate for use in small holes drilled for development and long-hole stoping. It has led not only to experiments to determine the best blending oil, but also to development of loading techniques to the point where NCN is being moved through loading tubes over 700 feet. It has required research into mining practices such as hole arrangement and blasting of development cuts. It has resulted in the development of a special product for secondary breaking. All this has been accompanied by the recognition of the importance of insuring safe practices at every stage.

The mining industry needs to assure compliance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). Congress has enacted this legislation with the intent of preventing, reducing, and eliminating pollution of the nation' s surface and groundwaters. Recognized sources of pollution such as seepage from tailings ponds, waste dumps, and contaminated effluent from mine dewatering operations pose a serious threat to adjacent groundwaters. In addition, technological innovations being implemented by the industry such as in situ leaching of low grade ore deposits may also lead to ground- water contamination. An adequate monitoring methodology designed to meet the needs of the mining industry is needed. Monitoring and control methodology devised for other man- caused sources of ground- water pollution - e. g., landfills - offer considerable promise for adaptation to the problem. The prediction of deleterious effects on groundwater quality usually requires extensive geohydrological data in addition to a thorough analysis of the mining activity that is underway or projected. If the avail- able data are adequate, mathematical models of surface and groundwater flow can be constructed that will help to predict effects on water quality. Data are inadequate to allow a realistic interpretation of pollution potentials. These data can be supplemented by computer simulation as a method to explore a number of possible environmental effects and also to develop a minimum-cost approach to identifying and gathering the additional necessary supporting data. Incorrect assessment of the important environmental considerations may, in many instances, prove to be the weakest link in analyzing the financial feasibility of a mining operation.

"The picture of the baby surrounded by the number of (usually) pounds of a variety of mineral products a newborn will use in a lifetime has been widely distributed over the years, both on the web and as business cards that could be distributed to anyone. Figure 1 shows a typical example. I have included a slide of the mineral baby in various lectures over the years, particularly in my lecture “Industrial minerals: much used, little recognized.” The mineral baby with associated estimated lifetime mineral quantities is updated every year. I collected a set of past mineral baby pictures to examine the changes in the quantities of the various mineral products over the years.The mineral baby was introduced by the Minerals Information Institute (MII) in 1999 and became known as the “MII Baby.” SME took over MII in 2008 and continued publication as the “MII Baby” until the merger of MII with SME’s GEM program in 2011 to form SME’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC). MEC is now the publisher. Figure 2 is the 2016 version of the mineral baby. The repositioning of the picture of the baby from lying on its back to crawling reflects a major design change to help emphasize that SME’s MEC is now the mineral baby’s publisher.Data sourcesThe data used to prepare each year’s mineral baby comes from the National Mining Association, which collects the preliminary annual mineral commodity data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources. This preliminary data becomes available late in the first half of each year. The life expectancy data for each year comes from the Center for Disease Control’s “Data and Statistics by Topic” and the population data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Quick Facts” tab.The source mineral data is compiled using metric tonnes as the basic unit. The quantity of of each mineral is the apparent U.S. consumption each year."

"The successful commercialization of a pressure oxidation (POX) process for recovering metal values, including gold, copper, zinc, nickel and molybdenum, is the result of a carefully planned development program. The initial task involves developing one or more conceptual flowsheets, including the POX autoclave and downstream purification and recovery steps. A laboratory program is completed to determine the technical viability of the flowsheets, define the operating parameters for each step and provide information for an initial economic assessment of the process. The process is then confirmed during a continuous pilot plant program, providing engineering design data and other information for the commercial design. A well-thought-out development program has been shown to be critical for reducing the risk of commercializing POX processes. Experiences developing POX processes for refractory gold ores and copper concentrates are briefly discussed. IntroductionPressure oxidation (POX) has become a common commercial operation for processing sulfide-bearing feedstocks. These feedstocks include gold ores and concentrates; copper concentrates; nickel concentrates and mattes; zinc concentrates; and molybdenum concentrates. Drivers for the development and commercialization of POX processes include:• The high cost for pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores, much of which is attributed to environmental controls.• The motivation to implement safe and more environmentally attractive alternatives for sulfide ores.• The need to process increasingly difficult ores with complex mineralogy.• Improvements made over the last 25 years in POX equipment design and experience operating commercial POX plants.Although the capital and operating costs for commercial POX processing can be high, this technology is capable of rapid oxidation of most sulfides and arsenic minerals in the feed, with little noxious gases and environmentally stable iron arsenate and other iron compounds in the POX residue (Marsden and House, 2006).In POX operations, sulfides are oxidized to either sulfates or elemental sulfur in an autoclave at elevated temperature and pressure with oxygen gas. For several generations now, the high alumina clayey sediments of Southeastern Alabama and Southwestern Georgia have supplied those regions with steady, mineral-based income although the impact of that income has been relatively minor until recently. Since World War II, mining activity has increased algebraically with over half of the total ore value in the Alabama area having been recovered since that time. The Georgia area production increases are even more dramatic. The trends are continuing and the next decade should see ore winning figures which will dwarf all previous production. It's time for the mining engineers to take note of this development as the mining methods, similar to the production, have developed rapidly and now offer challenges for the most competent professional. The development of mining techniques has followed a classic pattern. Beginning almost a hundred years or so ago, with the loading of weather-resistant surface boulders into mule-drawn wagons, mining methods have progressed to discovery of limited surface exposures in outcrop and eventually to stripping and development of non-obvious, subsurface deposits. Little by little, the overburden thickness of new pits has increased until, at present, pits with 100' -125' of overburden are being actively worked. Ground water problems in the Eufaula District are particularly challenging. At A. P. Green's J. W. Baker Pit, #l, in Barbour Co., Alabama, it is necessary to continually pump groundwater at the rate of about 400 gallons per minute from wells on the periphery of this large pit in order to keep the water table low enough to allow mining of the ore body.

The Middle Mississippi River extends from the mouth of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Missouri River, a distance of about 310 kilometers (km) measured along the river. From its founding in 1764 to the first steamboat arrival in 1817, the City of St. Louis was little more than a trading post. However, with the advent of the shallow-draft steamboat, the Middle Mississippi River rapidly became a major thoroughfare of commerce. In this regard, its importance has been reflected by the development of port facilities at St. Louis and by Federal activity relating to channel maintenance and improvement. First Federal work on the Middle Mississippi River was autho¬rized by Congress in 1824. This work was for snag removal and bank clearing and was directed at reducing the hazards to steamboat traffic, particularly during low-flow periods. During the 1820's and early 1830's, the main channel threatened to move toward the Illinois shore and abandon the St. Louis port facilities. In 1836 and 1837, Congress authorized construction of permanent improvements to keep-the river next to St. Louis (Missouri shore). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of a wet head continuous mining machine for reducing dust exposure for continuous miner operators. Wet head technology delivers water via sprays to the continuous miner's cutter head as opposed to traditional standard sprays located on the boom and body of the mining machine. The sprays, positioned directly behind each bit on the cutter head, deliver water at the point of attack, serving to cool the bits during mining to reduce the potential for frictional ignitions. The sprays also flood the coal with water to potentially suppress dust generation. Dust surveys were conducted at several mines to evaluate the wet head's effectiveness to control respirable dust exposure at the continuous miner operator location and in the immediate return. Results show that the wet head miner improved air quality at both locations to varying degrees in some cases and not in others when compared to a continuous miner with a standard spray system.

As part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project, 2.7-mile Combined Sewer Overflow tunnel is excavated with a 21.5-foot diameter EPB Tunnel Boring Machine. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, the tunnel is excavated maintaining a ground support pressure between 1 and 3 bar imposing significant challenges to the projects. The first part of the paper describes the general characteristics of the project while the second part focuses on the challenges and technical details of the pressurized breakthrough that took place in a deep shaft excavated in urban environment as part of the project.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) operates the largest regional water authority in the State of Michigan. Two of the tunnels supplying raw water to the system from the Detroit River are the Springwells and Northeast Tunnels. The existing 70- to 90-year old concrete lined tunnels have experienced distress and cracking over their life requiring non-structural repairs to sections of the tunnels. For the repair, an interior stainless-steel segmental liner plate system has been designed to restore the watertight capacity of the tunnel liner and resist the exterior hydrostatic groundwater pressure in a dewatered condition. The team is utilizing a “wet repair” approach to perform the necessary repairs while the tunnel remains fully flooded and operational. To test and validate the tunnel repair approach, a full-scale mock-up of the proposed repair has been performed using underwater equipment and divers.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. INTRODUCTION Tunnel construction has always been an extremely high risk form of contracting primarily due to the inaccessability of information concerning the ground conditions to be encountered during excavation. We certainly make every effort to overcome this problem through borings, geological research, site visits, etc.; but at best owners, engineers and contractors alike are only able to interpolate a relatively small amount of factual data from isolated sections of the project into a forecast of ground conditions for the entire project. In essence this becomes an "educated guessing game" with risk to reward ratios (and subsequently the bid price) in direct relationship to the contractor's confidence in the quality of the guess. In many instances it is economically or physically infeasible to obtain information and of course the total picture is never known until the project is complete. This problem effects the contract format as well as price. The contractor's ability to handle unforseen problems on the project become extremely important as to the project's overall success. The following pages contain an actual case history of a project which affords an excellent example of the entire spectrum of situations resulting from tunnel construction in difficult ground conditions.

The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

In the minerals industry today, the ?low hanging fruit? that once existed to debottleneck production and improve recovery, while meeting market needs for quality in mineral processing operations, are more and more difficult to find. Systematic methods for establishing plant mass flow, recovery, operational efficiency and control strategy in context with customer specifications provides the necessary insight and confidence for plant operators to prioritize improvement projects in order to maximize return on investment (ROI) for the site. The evaluation of aggregate and industrial mineral processing plants requires the following steps when projecting cost saving opportunities: collecting background data, conducting a base-line evaluation, analyzing specific unit-operation performance, defining investment options, prioritizing the selected improvement opportunities and the implementing process changes. The following paper describes the approach and challenges of developing an improvement plan for a dry and wet mineral processing operation.
