Since the late 19405, St. Joe has operated rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment underground in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt operations. At first, the trackless equipment was operated in conjunction with rail haulage equipment in the room-and-pillar operations, but was to later replace rail haulage completely. The first pieces of equipment to travel on pneumatic rubber tires were short-haul shuttle cars of 12-ton capacity hauling rock from the heading to the mainline railroad. Early-model drill jumbos were the next pieces of production equipment to be carried on rubber, along with mobile slusher ramps. Mobile diesel equipment, in the form of conventional rear-dump trucks, made its appearance underground in the early 1950s, introducing the era of relatively high-speed mobile equipment as compared to the electrically powered shuttle cars. Haulage distances for rubber-tired vehicles were no longer dictated by trolley lines and trailing cables and tires were subjected to increasingly severe applications. St. Joe's first completely trackless mine, the Hayden Creek Mine, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and for the first time, an articulated diesel truck consisting of the tractor unit of a conventional earthmoving scraper and a rear-dump rock wagon. Those machines rolled on the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an In- creasing portion of the underground haulage today.

The unutilized iron ore fines (IOF, − 10 mm, 45% to < 60% Fe(T)) left at various mine sites during blasting and processing are rich in goethetic-hematite associated with high clay and considered a potential iron ore resource. The variation of loss on ignition (LOI) from mines to mines is based on the goethite and clay mineral content. The clay containing below 45 μm is mostly brittle, causing beneficiation problems. The IOF has an LOI of 7.83%, with high silica (5.52%) and alumina (4.57%), and 57.17% of Fe(T) subjected to both conventional deep beneficiation (CDB) and magnetization roasting using high-ash non-coking coal to adopt the suitable upgradation process. The CDB and magnetization roasting concentrate has 62.61% and 67.58% Fe(T) with 64.69% and 85.19% yield, respectively. However, the presence of 6.40% LOI in CDB makes the ore challenging for pelletization. Characterization like X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), and chemical analysis was used to assess the concentrate quality and potential industrial application.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) Roof Control Division (RCD) collects a variety of geological and engineering information pertaining to mining conditions in surface and underground mines throughout the United States. Recently, lineament analyses, trends of geologic structures, and inferred stress directions based on mapping at mines with problematic ground conditions, have been integrated into a GIS. The incorporation of different kinds of information into the same geographic coordinates and map projection, placed on digital geologic maps, allows site specific data to be evaluated in a regional geospatial context, identifying trends in the orientation of horizontal stress or patterns of structural geologic features. As more information is collected, the GIS will evolve as a tool for district- and basin-wide evaluations of controls on ground instability, and may evolve into a predictive tool for some kinds of geologic hazards. In addition to the geologic and geotechnical evaluations, the GIS also serves as a searchable database of previous mine investigations. The database can be searched for a variety of criteria, and the results displayed in real geographic coordinates to find the locations of previously visited mines or to evaluate mine fatality and injury data. This not only allows old reports to be found, but also places the information in a geospatial context with respect to neighboring mines or geographic areas. The GIS also has the capability to serve as a digital mine map repository, where maps can be stored in digital, georeferenced format for display in relation to each other and various themes of interest. This allows evaluation of multiple seam mining interactions and proximity to other mines, and on a national level could serve as an abandoned mine map database.

At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.

Myanmar Ivanhoe Copper Company Ltd. (MICCL) has been operating the Sabetaung- Kyisintaung (S&K) Project producing LME Grade A Copper Cathode using the Heap Leach-SX-EW Process since 1998. The mineralization is mainly Chalcocite and the mine has a life of 20 years at the designed annual production of 25,000 tonnes of cathode copper. Design capacity was achieved within two of months of start-up. The mine is among the world’s lowest cost, Heap Leach-SX-EW operations. Information regarding plant design and operation are presented along with the challenges lying ahead and the latest developments. Daniel Kunz is President and Chief Operating Officer of Ivanhoe Mines, and a director of MICCL. He has more than 20 years’ experience in mining, construction and engineering. Prior to joining Ivanhoe Mines in 1996, Mr. Kunz was Vice President and Controller of Morrison Knudsen Corporation, a major international mining and construction company. He was also President and Chief Executive Officer of MK Gold Company, a public mining company listed on NASDAQ.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

The condition-based monitoring system is an important innovation for reducing the downtime of costly, heavy earth- moving machinery (HEMM). Vibration severity measurements were made on the HEMM located at the Gevra Project, the largest coal opencast project in India. Whenever the vibration severity levels exceeded the permissible limits, necessary actions were taken to replace the defective parts of the ma- chine. The systematic vibration monitoring of 120-t (132-st) dumpers, followed by corrective measures led to a substantial increase in component life (8.18% for an 445E Dressor and 28.44% for an MK-30 Unit Rig). The associated costs (including spareparts) were reduced by 21.55% and 25.74%, respectively. Because of the reduced downtime, savings for these two dumpers over the period from March 26 to June 25,1998, were of the order of Rs.26.47 (US$0.649) million.

"The United States coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history and regulatory impact. Trends since 1994Each year, U.S. coal mines are required to submit data on a variety of categories to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data include administrative records, production values and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the figures included in this article. There are several items to note regarding this data:1. The EIA reports from 2016 and 2017 were not released at the time of writing this report.2. The MSHA data set is actively maintained as information is provided. This means the data for 2016 is from June 27, 2016 and data for 2017 is from Aug 24, 2017. All other points represent the end of-year values.3. Each of the figures only includes data pertaining to active mines. EIA defines active mines as both active and temporarily idled mines, and inactive mines as nonproducing and abandoned mines. MSHA separates all four into separate categories, though this paper combines the MSHA values according to the EIA definition for the purpose of comparison."

On behalf of ME readers, the editors thank them.During the past 25 years, U.S. ball clay production (the quantity sold or used by domestic producers) increased from 788 kt (869,000 st) in 1990 to an alltime high of 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) in 2003 (Fig. 1). Housing construction within the United States, a leading market for ball clay-based ceramics and sanitaryware, began to decline in 2005, which resulted in a considerable decrease in sales of ball clay that continued through the 2008-2009 economic recession. After bottoming out at 831 kt (916,000 st) in 2009, ball clay production steadily increased through 2015 (Fig. 1). Estimated sales in 2015 were 36 percent higher than those in 1990 and 18 percent lower than those in 2003.Four companies (H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Imerys S.A., Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp.), mined ball clay in five states during 2015. An estimated 1.7 Mt (1.18 million st) of ball clay valued at an estimated $47.5 million was sold or used by U.S. producers, a 4-percent increase from 1.03 Mt (1.14 million st) valued at $45.2 million in 2014. Approximately 65 percent of total ball clay production was air-float, 25 percent was crude or shredded and 10 percent was water-slurried"

"Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country&apos;s diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia&apos;s economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. Mine fires and/or explosions continue to occur. While these are unusual events, they comprise emergency situations. Whenever one of these events occurs, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) responds with specially trained teams, mine fire experts, sophisticated scientific instrumentation, and trained instrument operators. In order to analyze mine air samples on-site, because time is of the essence, MSHA has a Mobile Gas Laboratory. The laboratory, which is stored near Pittsburgh, is totally self-contained. Sending air samples to a laboratory would take too long. Mine fire experts need the results of the latest analyses as soon as they are finished. The mobile laboratory is housed in the box of a diesel truck. Benches line both sides of the laboratory. Gas chromatographs are mounted on the benches. There is sufficient bench space for multiple bench top gas chromatographs. These instruments and their controllers are shock and vibration isolated to protect them during transit. The mobile laboratory can operate using on board diesel generators or line power. An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) supplies power to the instruments while switching from generator to line power or visa versa. Therefore, analysis of samples can proceed without interruption if a power failure would occur. In the rear of the mobile laboratory are racks that hold compressed gas cylinders. These cylinders contain carrier gas and compressed air. An air compressor is housed under the laboratory to operate the gas chromatograph actuators. Within several hours after arriving at a mine the instruments have stabilized and have been calibrated. The mobile laboratory is ready to begin analyzing air samples. The mobile laboratory has proved itself at many mine fires and explosions since its purchase.

Over the past several decades, cement-based grouts using ultrafine cement as are placement for portland cement have begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts, however the amount of information currently available on these grouts is limited. For this reason, the authors developed a field testing program to evaluate the penetration capabilities of various ultrafine cement grout mixes. The tests were conducted by injecting sand columns using different portland and ultrafine based grouts, the measuring penetration distances after applying equal injection pressure for the same time period. Results of tests performed in 1999 and 2000 are discussed herein.

The latest in mining technology and equipment will be show-cased this month at MINExpo International 2004. The event, billed as the world’s largest mining equipment exhibition, is set for Sept. 27-30at the Las Vegas Convention Center. MINExpo, sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), is held every four years in Las Vegas, NV. This year’s event is expected to attract more than 40,000 mining industry professionals and executives from around the world. And several key members of the U.S. Congress and other senior government officials are expected to attend. In addition, senior industry and government officials from Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa and South America will be on hand.

Mining activities at Kennecott and Park City are similar in that both districts began operation in the last half of the 18th century, and both operated on a large scale for many years. However, they are different for two important reasons. First, the mines in the Park City district were always underground. The city of Park City was above many of those mine workings. It remained in place after mining activity stopped, and as the town became an up-scale ski resort, property values increased and the tailings dumps became desirable building sites. In contrast, Kennecott eventually became an open pit mine, and the growing pit effectively consumed many of the small towns that had grown up around the underground workings. Even towns on the periphery of the open pit were razed to allow for the disposal of mine overburden. Second, almost all mining activity stopped in Park City in the early 1970s, just as the first rigorous environmental legislation in the United States was enacted. (The Ontario mine operated sporadically until 1982.) Many mine structures, waste dumps, tailings ponds and piles, and tunnels were simply abandoned as the mining companies ceased business or were bought out. Kennecott, on the other hand, has been in continuous operation for more than 120 years, so a closure plan hasn’t been finalized. Nonetheless, environmental and social problems have arisen, and the company has had to address them.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125kt/d (137,700 stpd). The most recent expansion included the installation of a semiautogenous mill (SAG) designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation, including conventional and column cells, and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modern distributed control system. PTFI’s operations are located in the Ertsberg mining district of Irian Jaya’s Jayawijaya Mountains, the eastern-most province of the republic of Indonesia on the Island of New Guinea. PTFI, the operator, is owned by Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the government of Indonesia (9.4%) and private Indonesian investors (9.3%).

"Construction of large facilities underground in urban areas has many advantages. In order to show the advantages, a case study of the Norsborg metro depot in Stockholm Sweden has been made. The Norsborg metro depot will be the largest and most modern underground metro depot in northern Europe. The depot has been built in hard rock in an urban area with small impact on the environment and local residents. The paper describes how it is possible to build underground facilities in a cost efficient way and take care of the challenges regarding working environment that comes with locating a permanent working place underground. INTRODUCTION The Stockholm area is one of the five fastest growing regions in Europe and home to more than a fifth of Sweden's population on just two percent of Sweden's surface. The population is growing rapidly, with about 35,000 people per year and is expected to reach 2.6 million in 2030. In order to meet the development and enable continued growth, housing projects and expansion of infrastructure need to keep the same pace; this is an easy conclusion to make but much more difficult to realize in practice. The main challenge is to accomplish development in a sustainable and efficient manner, minimizing the use of resources and land. By constructing facilities underground more urban space will be made available for development and/or for greening of city centers. Considering sustainability factors such as land value in decision making for placing of structures or facilities, underground locations could become a first choice alternative. During 2015 and 2016, several major underground infrastructure projects in the city of Stockholm will start, including a 14 km sewage tunnel and an 18 km by-pass highway tunnel. Furthermore the Stockholm metro system is currently undergoing the largest expansion since the 1970’s, a 19 kilometers extension of the metro system including new trains and new stations is planned. During 2013 - 2015 Skanska Sweden took part in the construction of a new metro depot placed underground in the southern part of Stockholm; the Norsborg metro depot. This is a top modern urban underground facility that in 2017 will serve as depot for 17 new metro trains. The project was selected for “Outstanding Project of The Year” at the ITA Tunneling Awards 2015."

Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature&apos;s basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable.
