"A review of the major renovation of the fifty-year old C-I headframe facilities at NERCQ's Con Mine, Yellowknife, N. W.T. is provided. The project was complete with only two 3-day shutdowns of the facility .Work consisted of four major phases: structural reinforcement of the adjoining mill building prior to dismantling; relocation of virtually all mine and mill utilities which transited the headframe collar en route from the adjacent powerhouse; dismantling of the entire headframe facility and portion of the mill building, including the removal of asbestos siding; and erection of a new headframe, idler rower, collarhouse and mill wall.This paper describes the work and methods used by NERCQ, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited, Acres International Limited, and others to bring the project to a successful completion. The history of the project is discussed from the planning phase through construction, including; design, procurement, and construction scheduling. The paper discusses the unique elements of the project, the problems encountered, and the methods used to achieve success.IntroductionThe Con Mine is a 800 tpd gold operation located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Originally owned and operated by Cominco Limited , the Con Mine was sold in December 1986 to NERCO Minerals Company, and officially renamed NERCO Con Mine, Ltd. The Con Mine has been in operation for over 50 years. The first gold brick ever produced in the Northwest Territories was poured at the Con Mine in 1938. The original C-1 shaft was sunk in 1937 to a depth of 235 ft. In 1941 the shaft was deepened to a depth of 950 ft, and the original timber head frame was replaced with a steel structure. Following the discovery of the Campbell Shear in 1946, the C-l shaft was again deepened to its present depth of 2443 ft. Over the years, mine production gradually moved deeper and further from the C-l shaft."

Aggregates production is a huge global industry which uses an enormous amount of energy and produces a massive amount of unsalable fines. Reducing the amount of energy used per tonne of product and/or the amount of fines produced, would make a quarry more efficient. This reduction would make the quarry more environmentally friendly and profitable. This research looks at modelling Mountsorrel Quarry, a granite quarry in the United Kingdom (UK), using JKSimMet and Split-Desktop software packages in conjunction with the European Union (EU) project, EE-Quarry. Samples submitted to drop weight tests confirmed Mountsorrel Quarry granite as an extremely hard granite. Rock fracture data (t10) and energy of comminution (ECS) data were obtained from analysing the results. Split-Desktop image analysis software was utilized to determine the particle size distribution (PSD) of the primary crusher feed, as it contains particles too large to screen manually. It was also found that <1% of the feed is fines, which at Mountsorrel Quarry are classed as particles smaller than 5 mm, and that no particles were larger than 3,810 mm. JKSimMet was used to create a flowsheet of Mountsorrel Quarry. The crusher product PSDs were simulated and found to have strong correlations with experimental data, calculated by screening samples from conveyor belts, especially in the fines region, with a mean difference of 1%. The simulated primary crusher product PSD showed that it contains ~6% fines. A simulation over the entire quarry showed the product to be within the size range produced at Mountsorrel Quarry, and with a simulated fines content of 13%. When the CSS on the primary crusher was altered from 165.1 mm (the operating size on site) to 100.0 mm, it increased the overall percentage of fines produced by 3%, increased the power draw by 140.6 kW, but reduced the overall plant production percentage of fines by 2%. Two blasts were analysed on adjacent rock faces. They had identical blast designs, but the order of deck detonation varied; the first blast detonated the bottom deck before the top and vice versa in the second blast. For each blast, measurements of the feed PSD to the primary crusher, the number of particles that required secondary breakage on the quarry floor, acoustic levels and vibration readings were measured. No significant difference was identified between the two blasts in any of the parameters measured. In conclusion, a working model of Mountsorrel Quarry has been made in JKSimMet that has been validated against data from site and Split-Desktop has been used to simulate the primary crusher feed PSD, something that was previously unknown. The effect of reversing the order of deck detonation in a two deck blast was also analysed but with no significant difference between the two blasts found.

"The successful commissioning and ramp up of the Albion Process™ at the GPM Gold Project relied on the successful scaling up of the process from batch and continuous pilot plant campaigns (Voigt et al., 2015). Critical information about reaction kinetics and residence time, grind size and pulp density were determined at the laboratory scale and successfully applied to the commercial scale. A limitation of small scale testwork, is that some parameters cannot be measured reliably and scaling up is a function of the physical size of the equipment which isn’t possible to test with laboratory scale equipment. Oxygen mass transfer rate is one such parameter since this is a complex interaction of many factors including slurry temperature, solution and slurry chemistry, slurry viscosity, agitator type, dimensions and power, oxygen bubble residence time, oxygen purity, tank geometry and oxygen injection technique. Oxygen generation represents an important operating cost for the Albion Process™. Pivotal to the Albion Process™ operating economically at atmospheric pressure is the capability to efficiently transfer oxygen while utilising as much oxygen injected to the process as possible. To respond to this Glencore Technology developed the HyperSpargeTM supersonic gas injector. This paper compares the HyperSparge™ against other sparging techniques to quantify the benefits of oxygen injection via a supersonic gas jet on scale up of the oxygen mass transfer system. The paper then examines plant survey data from the GPM Gold Project to demonstrate the very high oxygen utilisation that can be achieved with a correctly designed oxygen mass transfer system.INTRODUCTION One of the main challenges in chemical reactor design is the scale-up of processes from the laboratory to industrial scale. Processes which cannot be faithfully simulated with an experiment at the laboratory scale face challenges due to the physical dimensions and complexity of full scale operation. One example of this is the design of oxygen mass transfer systems in atmospheric oxidative leaching circuits such as the Albion Process™. A number of constraints associated with the use of laboratory scale equipment to design full scale circuits are involved in gas mass transfer processes in agitated slurries such as the Albion Process. Chiefly, typical laboratory and pilot size equipment lacks the required volume to provide useful design data without relying on empirical correlations: the specific agitator power input is artificially high, the bubble residence time in the vessel is artificially low, the oxygen partial pressure at the base of the vessel is artificially low and the oxygen delivery method may differ significantly to the industrial process. Further, the dynamic nature of the process introduces additional impacts on gas mass transfer, including the presence of solids, recycle streams and minor elements, plus the variances within the reality of a process plant such as disruptions or variance of feed quality."

"Because of its wide areal extent, its numerous lithological facies and its high degree of metamorphism, the Quebec portion of the Grenville province has only partly been explored and prospected. Rock types that are economically among the most interesting in the Grenville are those of mafic and ultramafic compositions, because of their great potential for coppernickel and chromium-platinum. The peculiar mode of occurrence and the distribution of these igneous masses in which copper-nickel mineralization is known to occur indicate' two common geological features: (1) aerial photographs and/or topographic maps strongly' suggest close spatial (and possibly temporal and genetic) association of most of these mineralized mafic and ultramafic intrusions with circular structures; (2) when plotted on a large-scale map comprising the Quebec portion of the Grenville, these circular structures fall along two lines which could correspond to major tectonic features. Even though the genetic links among the mineralized mafic-ultramafic masses, the circular structures and the linear features are not yet fully understood, their associations are believed to be empirically valid and should therefore be used as geological tools by those interested in exploring the Grenville for copper-nickel and possibly chromium-platinum deposits. It should be noted that these mafic and ultramafic bodies do not appear to be spatially related to anorthosite complexes."

"Abstract - The Draa Sfar polymetallic deposit, at about 16 km NW of Marrakech in Morocco, is a massive sulfide zone at the contact between an underlying volcanic and an overlying clastics sequence. The mineralized body is a flat lens with schistosity and "boudinage," tilted to the west and with a strong dip to the east. The lens extends over a strike length of about 2 km and from surface to a depth of about 1 km, with thickness varying from 1 m to almost 30 m. It has been intersected by about one hundred surface drill holes and, in its south part, by about thirty underground fan holes from two exploration levels at depths of 300 m and 400 m. On these two levels, the massive sulfide zone has been channel sampled over a cumulative length of about 0.7 km. Results from drill and channel samples are used to estimate the resources of the orebody according to several methods: sections, polygons around intercepts on a longitudinal plan, grids on the same longitudinal plan with various distance weighting methods including kriging and, finally, a 3D grid with the same range of interpolators. A comparison of the various estimates delineates the important factors in deriving resources for this type of deposit. Those factors are mostly geological and related to the interpretation of the geometry of the two limiting surfaces of the zone. For the 3D gridding, the authors have devised a new and original method that constrains the interpolation of blocks from samples to a geometry of limiting surfaces. The resulting model shows internal grade variations that parallel fluctuations of zone thickness and orientation without having to re-orientate the search window in each block. Résumé - Le gisement polymétallique de Draa Sfar, situé à environ 16 km au NW de Marrakech est un horizon de sulfure massif au contact d’une formation volcano-sédimentaire de base et d’une formation détritique sur-jacente. Le corps minéralisé se présente sous forme d’une méga-lentille aplatie, schistosée, boudinée et déversée vers l’ouest avec un fort pendage vers l’est s’étendant sur une longueur de 2 km et une profondeur de près de 1 km avec une épaisseur variant de moins d’un mètre à près de 30 m. Il a été reconnu par plus d’une centaine de sondages de surface et, dans sa partie sud, par une trentaine de trous souterrains en éventail à partir de deux niveaux à des profondeurs respectives de 300 m et 400 m. Sur ces mêmes niveaux, des traçages ont permis de rainurer le minerai sur une longueur cumulée de 0.7 km. Les données de sondage et de rainurage ont servi à estimer les ressources du gisement selon plusieurs méthodes : sections, polygones sur longitudinale, grille sur longitudinale avec différentes pondérations en fonction des distances incluant le krigeage et enfin grille tridimensionnelle avec le même éventail de pondérateurs. La comparaison des estimés obtenus permet de mettre en évidence les facteurs importants dans l’estimation des ressources de ce type de gisement. Ces facteurs sont essentiellement géologiques et relatifs à l’interprétation de la géométrie des limites des corps minéralisés. Pour l’estimation sur grille tridimensionnelle, on a mis au point une technique originale qui calque l’interpolation des blocs à partir des échantillons sur cette géométrie des surfaces de contact. Le modèle résultant montre des variations internes de teneurs qui épousent les fluctuations d’épaisseur et d’orientation de la zone sans qu’il soit nécessaire de ré-orienter les fenêtres de recherche dans chaque bloc."

To determine the optimal circuit configuration for gravity gold recovery consideration should be given to a range of factors in addition to the efficiency of the gravity circuit, including capital costs, ease of operation and impact on comminution. The most common gravity gold circuits utilise a centrifugal concentrator treating a portion of the hydrocyclone underflow. This paper will examine this option and alternative circuit configurations to illustrate the effect of various gravity circuit feed and tailings configurations on the equipment sizing, capital costs, operating costs, water balance, comminution efficiency and gravity gold recovery. The optimum circuit configuration can provide reduced capital and operating costs, maximise gravity gold recovery and improve comminution efficiency.

"Malcolm Knowles, the famous adult educator once wrote: ""What a challenge we in human resources development face if we are to avoid the obsolescence of our workforce. I can foresee this challenge requiring that we reconceptualize (...) and redefine the role of HRD, away from that of managing the logistics of conducting training activities to that of managing a system of learning resources"".The context in which this was written surrounds the subject of adult education and the need for business and industry to change its approach to the treatment of adults as learners. In explaining what &apos;managing a system of learning resources&apos; means, Knowles refers to line supervisors and managers as the most ubiquitous resources for day-in and day-out employee development. In many organizations training has been largely a staff rather than line responsibility. Even where trainers reported to line management, it was still seen as a staff function performed by a few specialists.This change referred to by Knowles places a much heavier responsibility on line supervisors and managers for the development of their personnel than has traditionally been the case. Managing that change - handing over the responsibility to the line organization - is the supreme challenge for the HRD function.Just why is this change necessary? Because too often, the learner does not effectively use on the job what he or she learned in the classroom. In fact, learners often discard new methods and revert to the older ways. The reason training does not stick is that the systems for training and work management are most often separate entities and while one may support the other, they need to be a single integrated system in order to ensure the transfer to the job effectiveness of training and some real value for the training dollars.Because much training can be wasted, steps have to be taken to ensure that it fulfills its intended purpose. The effective and continuing application of knowledge and skills that learners acquire can only be realized when line supervisors and managers are at the centre of the training system.This paper describes how such a systemis being developed at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) as a functional training program is introduced. The following text provides background information on the IOC - who they are and where they are located, a definition of functional training, an evaluation of the suitability of this approach for adults in industry, a description of how the program is being implemented at IOC and some observations that have been made as this change is experienced."

"This paper examines unpredictability in the parameters governing hydraulic fracturing (HF) as used in stress amelioration for underground excavations, with the aim of showing how this unpredictability may affect design decisions. Using uncertainty models that are appropriate to particular levels of information and degrees of uncertainty, this paper demonstrates how these can aid in decision-making related to feasibility assessments of HF arrays for stress amelioration.Cave mining operations produce large underground voids and high stress concentrations around critical mine locations. These stress concentrations increase the potential for rock burst events. Although de-stress blasting has a long history for redistributing high stress concentrations, to improve safety and reliability HF is now being trialled as an alternative.Unfortunately the HF process is extremely uncertain, and so predicting fracture propagation geometry is difficult. Although the major parameters governing HF propagation have been previously identified, no indication has been given regarding the contribution that uncertainty in these makes to unpredictability in the overall HF system. Using simplified models of HF and referencing a recently proposed characterization of unpredictability, we relate unpredictability in the various governing parameters to the effect it has on strain energy density (SED) in the surrounding rock. Within these models we analyse SED as well as the stress intensity factor (KIc) when investigating the effect of parameter uncertainty and its influence on various crack propagation criteria (Sih & Macdonald, 1974). These models are applicable to unpredictability associated with the development of new fractures; the case of pre-existing fractures is the subject of on-going work.The paper will assess in greater detail the various governing parameters, and investigate the appropriate use of other uncertainty models. As a result, we will show how assessment of uncertainty in HF parameters can be used to both guide feasibility studies and determine the optimal allocation of resources to improve the final design."

"The Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia. It is divided into the Duke Mountain Block on the north east and the Dip Slope on the west. Together, these areas cover 39,503 ha of coal licences.The property is underlain by Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous marine and continental sedimentary rocks. Economic coal measures are contained within the Gates Formation. Exploration of the property began in the early I970s, with drilling commencing in 1975. To date, 255 holes have been drilled and nine adits have been driven to recover unoxidized coal samples.The property has a geological resource potential of 2.8 billion tonnes of medium and high-volatile bituminous coal. Medium-volatile bituminous reserves, totalling 68.9 million ROM tonnes at an over-all strip ratio of 6.3:1, have been identified in three pit areas in the Duke Mountain Block.Construction start-up will commence when sales contracts are arranged. The clean coal will be exported via the Ridley Island Terminal at Prince Rupert.IntroductionThe Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia in the southern port ion of the Peace River Coalfield. The coal field encompasses a strike length of 250 km of Lower Cretaceous coal-bearing strata in which 13 companies have identified several billion tonnes of resources and several hundred million tonnes of reserves. Currently, two companies with contracts are in the construction phase, and are scheduled to produce coal by early 1984. Quintette Coal Ltd. has a contract with Japanese steel mills to supply annually 5.0 million tonnes of metallurgical and 1.5 million tonnes of thermal coal. Teck Corporation (Bullmoose property) has a contract to supply 1.7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually."

The small town of Bruce Mines lies a few miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on the north shore of Lake Huron. This was the site of the first copper mine. This copper smelter used a reverberatory furnace, based on the Welsh process, and operated in the period of 1849 to 1850, when the plant was destroyed by fire. During the period of 1850 to about 1869, crushed and sorted ore was shipped to England and later to the United States. In 1869, a roastleach plant, based on the Henderson Process, was constructed at Bruce Mines and was operated until about 1872. This short article describes the early development of this historic operation. Although the rich copper ore found in the vicinity of Bruce Mines was known to the Indians, its discovery in or about 184 7 was credited to Mr. Keating, who named the area Bruce in honour of Lord Elgin (James Bruce), Canada&apos;s Governor General. In 1848, the property was acquired by the Montreal Mining Company for 40 000 pounds sterling and the company immediately sent a small party to investigate the deposit. The party sank a shaft on a lode within a hundred yards of the lake and also reported two adjacent lodes farther inland, which were left undeveloped until the turn of the century. Initially, the foundation of the headframe and hoist was built above the frost line and when the machinery was set in motion it collapsed. Eventually, the shaft was to reach a depth of 300 feet. By 1849, the property was well established and the small settlement consisted of 77 miners, 65 labourers, 4 boys, 11 tradesmen, including blacksmiths and carpenters, 2 mining captains, 1 engineer, 2 clerks and 1 superintendent. The community, including the workers&apos; families, numbered about 250.

"Over the last 50 years disposal of uranium mill tailings has evolved from dumping untreated tailings into the nearest depression to depositing chemically-stabilized tailings into highly engineered management facilities. This paper describes the evolution of disposal methods and the criteria which have determined the development path followed. Remediation techniques to bring older and now unacceptable tailings deposits into satisfactory compliance with today's· regulations are reviewed.With the closure of the uranium mines in Elliot Lake, Ontario, considerable effort is being made on decommissioning the tailings areas by developing long term maintenance of water covers. The innovative methods being used to develop these water covers are detailed. Methods now under development in Saskatchewan for subaqueous deposition of high density or paste tailings for permanent disposal in mined out open pits are described.SummaryThe technology for uranium mill tailings disposal in Canada has evolved considerably over the past 51 years. This evolution has been driven by an improving understanding of how best to safely and permanently store tailings, in conjunction with stricter environmental protection regulations. Old sites are being decommissioned in situ, but may require long term care and maintenance. The use of water covers is an important technique in eastern Canada to prevent intrusion, radon evolution and, for the Elliot Lake tailings, acid generation. The major drawback of water covers in any above ground disposal method is the requirement that a long term maintenance and monitoring plan be put into effect for each site.New higher grade mines in Saskatchewan will increasingly use disposal in mined-out pits using the pervious surround method and/or paste tailings technology as a method to permanently dispose of these wastes and to permit “walkaway” after a few years of monitoring."

The mechanical behaviour of Opalinus Clay, an indurated over-consolidated argillaceous rock, is heavily influenced by the presence of preferably oriented bedding planes. The objective of this study is to illustrate a new modeling approach aimed at capturing the bedding-induced anisotropy of Opalinus Clay as observed in the laboratory and in situ. The combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM) is employed as the main simulation tool. FEM/DEM is a numerical method that models material damage processes by explicitly considering fracture nucleation and propagation. A transversely isotropic elastic constitutive law is used to account for different elastic property values in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the layering, while strength anisotropy is captured using a directional cohesive fracture model. Quantitative calibration and validation of the model is based on laboratory results of indirect tensile tests and uniaxial compression tests. Emergent strength and deformation properties, together with the simulated damage mechanisms, are shown to be in good agreement with experimental observations. Preliminary results relative to the analysis of a circular tunnel show that the approach is able to reproduce the main Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ) formation mechanisms as observed in the field.

"IntroductionThe Key Lake uranium-nickel ore deposits are located in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan, Canada (Fig. 1). Many papers have been published on Key Lake in the past (Dahlkarnp and Tan, 1977; Kirchner and Tan, 1977; Kirchner et al., 1980). Immediately after its incorporation in 1968, Uranerzbergbau GmbH, a German holding company, set up exploration subsidiaries in Australia, the United States and Canada. This account reviews those exciting years starting with the concept to explore the rim of the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan, and leading up to the discovery of the deposits in 1975 and 1976.A few summary statements can be made:• The discovery of Key Lake resulted from a very systematic exploration approach and the persistence of Uranerz, the operator. • Cluff Lake and Rabbit Lake had been discovered some seven years before, but it was the discovery of the Key Lake deposits which brought Saskatchewan to the forefront to become Canada&apos;s foremost uranium producing province.• The experiences gained at Key Lake, which were subsequently published, triggered the discovery of many other deposits of similar, or even larger, size than Key Lake. The spatial relationship of those deposits to graphitic conductors and hydrothermal alteration zones are presently the most effective indicators for locating new deposits - indicators which were first recognized at Key Lake.• Key Lake is, and will remain for some years to come, the largest producing high-grade uranium mine in the world."

"This paper begins with a brief discussion of the geology of the Newfoundland Zinc Mine area. The results of groundwater studies and pumping tests are then presented. It was decided that groundwater in the mine could best be controlled by conventional sump pumping and grouting. The system is fully described, as well as plans for improvements on the method. LocationThe Newfoundland Zinc Mine is located in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, six miles northeast of Daniel&apos;s Harbour. The mine is situated at an elevation of approximately 350 feet above sea level, 5 miles farther inland , west of the long range of mountains which rise abruptly with elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.GeologyThe ore deposits occur in lower Ordovician carbonate rocks that form part of the stable St. Lawrence platform, which is mainly composed of (1) the lower Cambrian Labrador group, (2) the upper Cambrian to lower Ordovician St. George group, (3) the disconformity overlying Middle Ordovician limestones and shales of the Table Head formation and, (4) two overlying klippen composed of Cambrian and lower Ordovician rocks.The ore deposit is a Mississippi Valley type of the Tennessee variety, having proven are reserves of 5.3 million tons averaging 9.70/0 zinc from eleven ore zones which exist in an area of 5.5 square miles.Among these ore zones, the L zone is the major underground mining area, and is by far the largest of the known deposits. It has proven are reserves of 3.4 million tons with 11.5% zinc; this underground development has been inprogress since 1974.Stratigraphically, the orebody, which occurs about 300 feet below the disconformities between the Table Head and St. George formations, is situated in the upper St. George formationof lower Ordovician age.The upper St. George formation of the L zone is divided into three main units (Fig . I) : the underlying lower limestone the middle grey dolomite pseudo breccia unit and the overlying siliceous dolomite unit. In this area of the mine, the beds of the St. George formation dip gently west to northwest to 10 to 15 degrees. The orebody, which is generally strata controlled with a southwesterly plunge and which has the form of thin, narrow, but elongate, en-echelon ore bed s, is contained in grey dolomite pseudo breccia. Its dimensions vary from 50 to 900 feet in width and 8 to 120 feet in thickness, and the over-alllength exceed s 6,000 feet.The surficial deposit of the area is a till comprising a heterogeneous mixture of sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders, with an average depth of 20 feet."

"Dust collectors are used to reduce airborne dust levels generated during crushing at a mining operation and their adequate maintenance is required to ensure effective control of health and safety hazards associated with dusty conditions. Although the pitot traverse technique is commonly employed to balance these dust collectors, the use of an alternative-the equilibrium concentration tracer gas method-is proposed in this paper. This method, which uses sulphur hexafluoride as a tracer gas, can be used to balance airflows in dust collectors and to determine hood collection efficiency accurately and effectively. This technique also reduces some of the errors inherent to pitot tube measurements. IntroductionIndustrial dust collectors are used to reduce dust genera ted by processes like cru shin g, and these must be periodically checked and balanced to ensure continuing effective control of health and safety hazards associated with dusty conditions.To date, the pitot tub e traverse technique has been commonly used to balance air flows in dust collectors. However, this technique is both time -consuming and cumbersome. The equilibrium concentration tracer gas method, described in this paper, is proposed as a viable alternative as it is faster, more reliable, and amenable to automation. The use of tracer gases for such task s is not new. "Three stages, each characterized by a particular sedimentation, magmatism, mineralization and deformation, are recognized in the geological history of Gaspe. The first stage led to the formation of the Taconian orogen, the second to that of the Acadian orogen and the third stage to the accumulation of a post-orogenic cover. The Taconian orogen includes volcanic and detrital rocks of Late Precambrian or Cambrian and Lower to Middle Ordovician ages in which ultrabasic intrusions have been emplaced. Folding is severe. Mineralization is of the Cr-Ni-Cu type, related to the igneous facies.The rocks constituting the Acadian orogen include two distinctive sequences corresponding to two successive sub-stages. The second substage began in Early Devonian time with the first pulses of the Acadian orogeny. The rocks of the first substage grade southward from a nearly platformal sequence to an assemblage implying less stability and spotty volcanism. The second substage was one of synorogenic deposition of elastic rocks, first in a marine environment and later under terrestrial conditions. Granitic intrusions, surrounded by aureoles of skarn and hornfels in which Cu-Pb-Zn mineralization is found, accompanied the Acadian deformation. The second-stage"

"CANMET has been operating as a Government Technology Centre for two years. Many of CANMET&apos;s programs involve long-term research and require special expertise, often available at Canadian universities. CANMET&apos;s involvement with universities ranges from research grants and contracts to exchanges of scientists and joint use of research facililies. Examples of CANMET - university cooperation in mining are presented. IntroductionIn the last two years or so CANMET has undergone a significant metamorphosis, resulting in greater emphasis on applied research to enhance Canada&apos;s industrial capability. CANMET&apos;s new mandate is reflected in the types of projects undertaken and their categorization, (Fig . I). Emphasis is being placed on two project categories: strategic R&D, to enable CANMET to serve the changing technological needs of the industry; and incrernental R&D, to serve the more immediate industry needs through modifications to existing technologies and knowledge. The balance of CANMET&apos;s e ffor t is devoted to providing Mandated and Specialized Services, and to Exploratory Research.CANMET interaction with universities can involve one of several available vehicles : contracts, research grants, exchanges of scientists , student employment and nomination of professors on CANMET&apos;s advisory council. Evaluating the economic viability as well as the sustainability of the Circular Economy (CE) system requires a deep understanding of the distribution of all elements, compounds, alloys, materials etc. in flows. In this paper, the circularity of the copper value chain, including primary and secondary processing, is rigorously evaluated. The studied system comprises the metallic copper production from primary sources (from mineral to metal), copper-containing commodity production (copper is mixed with other metals) and copper recycling through secondary smelting to close the loop. This is linked to photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage. A simulation model of this system is created using HSC Sim, considering more than 30 elements (and its various compounds), 180 unit operations and 800 flows. From the mass and energy balances obtained through the simulation, an exergy analysis is conducted to evaluate the resource consumption from a second law (entropy) perspective. Additionally, these results are complemented through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the recovery of technology elements and by-products is discussed, while quantifying the losses through the value chain. Through the digitalization of the complete system, a better CAPEX and OPEX understanding of the metal recovery and losses can be obtained, as well as the associated resource consumption and environmental impacts. New flowsheets and technologies can be evaluated. Several scenarios show how the resource consumption and the environmental impacts are affected by the recovery of different materials to produce different products. INTRODUCTION A key challenge of the circular economy (CE) is the linkage and optimization of both resource and energy efficiency of the (renewable) energy infrastructure and the resource cycle depicted by Figure 1 simultaneously. In addition, the CE requires the linkage of all stakeholders as shown by Figure 1. This has been discussed in some detail by Reuter and Bartie (2019) and Reuter et al. (2019). Copper and all its associated technology elements is one of the key enabling metals that is an economical copper colored thread through CE society (Reuter & Kojo, 2014). The Metal Wheel (Figure 2) shows the linkage of and recovery of various elements associated with copper and other carrier metals. This reveals that copper acts as an important carrier metal because of its properties i.e. the wealth of technology elements it carries from geological ores, but also its capacity to act as solvent of valuable elements and thence a key closer of various complexly connected element and material cycles when these technology elements are released during copper refining. The same applies to all other carrier metals of modern CE society as shown for example recently in a lead policy brief (Blanpain, Reuter & Malfliet, 2019).

"Abstract - The Labrador Trough contains world-class iron deposits which have been mined since 1954. The direct shipping of Knob Lake ores were mined at Schefferville from 1954 to 1982. Concentrate production began in 1961 in the southwest end of the Trough, with three mines currently producing concentrate and pellets at a rate of 35 Mt per year. West and north of Schefferville, several billion tonnes of taconite have been outlined in fine-grained, cherty magnetite iron formation. Several deposits of highly metamorphosed magnetite-specularite iron formation are located west of Ungava Bay. Numerous studies have shown that this medium- to fine-grained iron formation can be beneficated to 66% to 68% iron. In the area from Wabush Lake to Mont-Wright, a medium- to coarse-grained friable specularite-quartz iron formation is repeated by folding to form several large deposits. In this area, three mining operations are located with reserves and resources in the order of 5 billion tonnes.The iron deposits occur within iron formation in sediments in the extensive Proterozoic geosyncline called the Labrador Trough. Several facies of iron formation within the Sokoman Formation reflect variations in chemical composition and depositional conditions. The correlation between the mineralogy and textures is discussed to illustrate the development of different types of iron ores. This band extends for about 1100 km southeast of Ungava Bay through both Quebec and Labrador. Further south, it turns southwest past the Wabush and Mont-Wright areas to within 300 km of the St. Lawrence River. The iron formation is essentially folded and faulted along most of its length. The degree of metamorphism is variable, ranging from intense in the northern and southern portions to greenschist facies in the central portion.The stratigraphy, structure and mineralogy of the producing mines are described along with the history of discoveries. Geological input is required to achieve the strict specifications of the international iron ore market."
