A novel sol ? gel (SG) synthesis procedure utilizing varying ratios of glycine and ethylene glycol to total metal cations has been developed to create high purity nanometer sized La0.65Sr3.5MnO3 powders. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) have confirmed that the crystallite sizes of such powders are ~ 20 nm, and the aggregate particle sizes vary between 100 to 300 nm. Mixing varying weight percents of SG LSM powders with commercially available Praxair LSM in a composite LSM/YSZ functionally graded cathode has been shown, through the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), to exhibit enhanced oxygen reduction kinetics vs. at conventional cathode materials.

This paper presents a novel action recognition method for observing human workers using interactions between actions and related objects on an internal construction site. This method can be used to measure work rates for labour productivity monitoring. This monitoring is critical because the performance of a construction project is significantly impacted by labour productivity. However, construction sites are generally crowded with a large number of workers and objects. Such congestion disrupts the accurate, automatic recognition of construction workers? actions. This congestion is one reason that existing automatic action recognition studies of construction areas mainly focus on workers? actions themselves. However, the crowded conditions mean that sites could offer a great deal of clues that could be used for automatic action recognition. According to psychological studies, interactions clearly take place between human actions and related objects, such as between hammering and a hammer. Humans use these interactions to recognize actions or objects more accurately. On the construction site, workers, materials, tools, and equipment are carefully planned out ahead of actual construction. The categories of workers and objects are pre-defined and, as noted, specific interactions define relations between worker actions and objects. In this paper, the interactions are limited to human workers and their hand-held objects. Action recognition results can be combined with hand-held object information to improve recognition accuracy. With the limited interactions, experiments in this paper show a significant improvement in action recognition. This paper describes the utilization of these interactions to improve construction action recognition accuracy based on human skeleton data and 2D color video from Microsoft KINECT sensor.

"The theoretical solution for a viscoelastic well was presented by Gnirk and Johnson in 1964. From this an exercise was executed to validate the numerical simulation of a cemented salt well. The exercise comprised the geomechanical behavior through time of a cemented salt well, this was achieved using a finite element commercial software. This simulation showed the accuracy of the theoretical solution for viscoelastic materials such as salt rock. The theoretical solution presented elastic and viscoelastic analytic equations for the tangential and radial stresses. The equations for the elastic material (casing and cement) and for the viscoelastic material (salt rock) are presented here: Where equations 1a & 1b are the radial and tangential stresses of the elastic material; equations 2a & 2b are the radial and tangential stresses of the viscoelastic material; and a, r and b are the geometrical parameters explained in Figure 1. These equations are function of Pb, a stress time dependent factor that comes from the Burgers model of viscoelasticity. This is well explained in Gnirk and Johnson (1964) and for the sake of simplicity is not disclosed here. Po is the stress at section A-A’ dependent of the depth h."

Sulfate-reducing passive bioreactors efficiently treat acid mine drainage (AMD) by increasing its pH and alkalinity and by removing metals as sulfide precipitates, in addition to hydroxides and carbonates. However, the new mining legislation sets discharge limits based on physicochemical parameters and on the non-toxicity of treated effluent as well. In this study, toxicity was assessed for effluent from 3.5 L column bioreactors filled with mixtures of natural organic carbon sources and operated at two different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 7.3 d and 10 d for the treatment of a highly contaminated AMD. Acute toxicity was observed for D. magna, and a toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) procedure was performed to identify potential toxicants. To help the interpretation of the toxicity results, metal partition in the effluent was also determined by filtration and ultrafiltration, while geochemical modeling was performed for metal speciation evaluation. The 10 d HRT effluent was nonacutely lethal for rainbow trout but acutely lethal for D. magna, whereas the 7.3 d HRT effluent was toxic for both organisms. The toxicity to D. magna was eliminated by 2 h of aeration for the 10 d HRT effluent, and the TIE procedure suggested iron as a cause of toxicity. However, the 2 h aeration eliminated the toxicity of the 7.3 d HRT effluent, only if performed after the pH rising to 9.3. Data regarding metal speciation indicated instability of both effluents during aeration and were consistent with the toxicity being caused by iron. The study indicates that design of passive treatment should include sufficient HRT and posttreatment aeration to meet acute toxicity requirements. "New developments in centrifugal slurry pump technology are discussed in relation to their importance for improving pump operation and reliability.Experimental data obtained by measuring the velocity of liquid flows in a slurry pump casing using Laser Doppler Velocimetry are presented. This demonstrates the importance of selecting pumps with the proper hydraulic design to provide optimum efficiency, maximum part life and minimum operating cost.The paper also discusses the use of new wear resistant materials, such as ceramic/metal composites, which can significantly improve the life of parts exposed to abrasive media. The results of laboratory attrition tests are presented. IntroductionCentrifugal slurry pumps are of primary importance for the hydro transport of abrasive and corrosive media in the mineral processing industry. As for all process equipment, slurry pumps must be carefully selected and operated to provide optimal performance. To achieve this, it is necessary to select equipment which will provide efficient and reliable operation for the specific service conditions and incorporates the best materials available to obtain maximum parts life.Abrasive wear of liquid end components is the most important aspect that distinguishes the design and application of slurry pumps from other types of pumps. It is therefore necessary to have a fundamental understanding of the mechanical interaction between pump components and the media being handled, as this will impact significantly on hydraulic design, mechanical reliability and selection of wear resistant materials. Recent advances in computational approaches'» have greatly improved the prediction of wear rates in pump casings by facilitating the solution of complex equations which describe the wear mechanisms mathematically. In conjunction with this, new experimental techniques allow researchers to measure flow fields in pump casings using non-invasive devices such as Laser Doppler velocimeters."

Since connnencing underground prcxiuction in 1979, the Ruttan Mine has been prone to secon:iacy sulphide dust explosions. Al though infrequent during the early years of prcxiuction, these occurrences did result in major damage and lost time injuries. 'As the mine exparrled and developed to further depths, sulphide dust explosions occurred on a more frequent basis. Incomplete ventilation se:rvices, required to exhaust the affected areas, caused frequent delays resulting in lower prcxiuction rates due to the time required to ventilate the affected areas of the mine. CUrrent procedures to minimize the effects of secon:iacy dust explosions evolved from practical suggestions arrl examining methcx:ls other mines have developed to cope with the problem. Procedures and regulations to protect errployees from exposure to hazards of sulphur dioxide are time consuming, expensive and counter prcxiuctive in their present fonn. This paper describes the history of secon:iacy sulphide dust explosions at the Ruttan Mine and the methcx:ls and proced.ures currently in place to minimize and contain the effects of dust explosions.

"AFTER SPENDING a lifetime in the mining industry it is normal that one should be concerned with the future of his profession, especially if he is directly responsible for the education and formation of future mining engineers. It is not necessary to insist on the importance of mining for Canada and for the entire world to prove the necessity of the Mining Engineer. A statement was made by Zay Jeffries, former vicepresident of General Electric Co., and here I quote: ""Even though minerals without man are of no moment, man would not be man as we know him without minerals ... ""minerals are as essential to the life of social man as food is to man himself"". This certainly expresses magnificently the purpose of the mining profession. These are the reasons why I have accepted to present my views on the future of the Mining Engineer. If I express some concern it is not because I feel that there is any danger for the profession to disappear; men will always respond to a challenge and this can be found in the extraction of minerals as well as in any other field of human endeavour. However, the first big question concerns the competitive position of Canada in the world of mining. To be made available to Canadians and to the rest of the world, all this tremendous potential mineral wealth that our country has been so generously endowed with by nature must be gained from the earth's crust at a competitive cost. Otherwise it will never become ore and will have no value. Let us not forget that although minerals are discovered, mines are not found but are made. So let us be more efficient mine makers. To accomplish this end, it is the duty of the different responsible organizations at all levels - be they governmental, para-governmental, public or private institutions - to do their utmost to assure the profitable development of our mineral wealth. The University has an all-important role to play in preparing all the specialists required by this intricate machine that mining is. All the different disciplines of engineering, health, social and -managerial sciences are needed for the good functioning of the mining industry. Although they are all essential, some will play a more important role as a member of the structure. In this discussion it is the role of the most important member, the mining engineer, who is actually responsible for the extraction of the minerals from the earth's crust that must be established. From this we will then be able to analyse his responsibilities and try to suggest the mining engineering program most suitable to prepare this engineer for his future role."

This paper examines manning best practice in the Australian mining industry. In particular, the paper considers a range of mining operations and their manning levels as measured by operational benchmarking. The benchmarking results presented cover 15 open pit and 37 underground studies in Australia. The data was collected as part of AMC?s benchmarking and operational improvement studies conducted between 1999 and 2008. The results examine overall manning levels in mining, processing and administration functions. Manning levels for a range of mining methods, including open pit and underground methods, are segmented. Productivity measures such as ore tonnes per man day and metres developed per man day are presented and where direct relationships can be established, the relationships are described. Finally, the paper considers perspectives on best practice with regard to manning in the Australian mining industry and the limitations in application of this type of analysis in a global context.

Pavement condition assessment is an indispensable constituent in maintaining roadway infrastructure. Current practices for pavement condition assessment are labor intensive which introduce subjectivity in pavement rating and are time consuming. Automated methods rely on full 3D reconstruction of the pavement surface which introduces high equipment and computation costs. This paper presents a methodology for detection of patch type distresses in asphalt pavement images. This method uses filtering and histogram equalization for clearing and enhancing the image accordingly. It continues by applying the morphological process of closing, along with some rules based on the characteristics of a patch when captured in an image, to finally detect the area it occupies. Criteria for area, length, and width of a patch as seen in an image are taken into account to decide whether a probable patch is actually a patch. The method has been implemented in C#. The preliminary experiments demonstrate it produces promising recognition results

"The in situ block size is a key parameter in the geomechanical characterization of rock masses. It describes the fracturing of the rock mass and thus is a measure for the degradation of the rock mass strength. Several classification systems use the in situ block size. For instance, the Geological Strength Index (GSI) requires the “blockiness” and joint surface condition factor as key input parameters. The “blockiness” has recently been related to the in situ block volume (Cai et al., 2004). Due to the limited information about the internals of a rock mass, it is not possible to determine the in situ block size directly. Currently, the in situ block size is determined by calculations using oversimplified models, vague estimations or, due to the lack of relevant information, it is neglected. As remote measurement systems have become available for rock mass characterization, a more comprehensive record of discontinuities can take place. Measurements can be performed on exposed rock outcrops and in particular on tunnel faces and walls, delivering the location, orientation, spacing and persistence of discontinuities at an arbitrary number and locations. An estimation of the in situ block size at the same level of sophistication is still not available. This paper aims at examining the relationship between visible and measureable information at the rock surface, and the in situ block size. Three-dimensional block model simulations were performed using the block model engine of the distinct element code 3DEC. Initial investigations focussed on the minimally required observation area in order to obtain reliable block size distributions. Based on a representative volume element, a reference distribution of the block area at the observation area for a specific discontinuity system was determined. Subsequently, the size of the observation area was decreased stepwise and each new distribution was compared to the reference distribution. For all analyzed systems, it turned out that the mean block area must be smaller than 1% of the observation area to achieve a reliable block size distribution. Further simulations focussed on discontinuity systems with three non-persistent sets. The results were compared to the formula proposed by Cai et al. (2004). A transformation factor T was introduced which replaces the persistence terms in Cai et al.’s proposed formula. The factor describes the correlation between block volumes generated by persistent and corresponding non-persistent discontinuity sets. The simulations included the variation of the discontinuity set spacing, persistence, and orientation. The mean and additionally the 25%-, 50%- and 75%-quantiles of the block size distribution were analyzed. Examining all values for the transformation factor the distribution can be described by a power function with a negative exponent. The function depends on the persistence only. Finally, the results of random simulations were compared to the analytical formula using the transformation factor. The predicted mean and selected quantiles show a good agreement with the simulation results. It gives a comprehensive picture about the block size distribution in discontinuity systems with three non-persistent sets."

THROUGHOUT this article, minerals used in the paint industry are designated 'pigments'. They may be classified in two groups: (1) Pigments which are used in the state in which they occur in nature, requiring only mechanical preparation. (2) Pigments which require heating or chemical treatment before use, in order to obtain from them a product of the desired quality or shade of colour. They may be further classified according to colour, as follows: White Pigments .-These include calcium carbonate (chalk, marble), gypsum and alabaster, kaolin-or china-clay, and magnesia. However, the white pigments most extensively used are compounds prepared chemically from minerals containing lead, zinc, titanium, and antimony. The white pigments are of particular importance because, not only are they used by themselves, but they also serve as adjuncts to other colours for the production of special shades. Yellow Pigments.-These are mainly naturally occurring ferric hydroxides, as limonite and bog iron ore, or similar. compounds prepared artificially. Brown Pigments .-Pigments of this group are distinguished for their beauty and depth of colour, and many of them are used in the finest of paintings. Familiar names are sienna, umber, and Vandyke brown. They are for the most part ferric hydroxides, containing varying amounts of water; but the group also includes a manganese brown, which consists chiefly of a mixture of oxide and hydroxide of manganese. Red Pigments.-Chief among this group is ferric oxide, known under various trade-names, such as Canadian red, Persian red, etc., and also the much prized and somewhat rare vermilion. The pigment used is either naturally occurring hematite, de-hydrated limonite, or artificially produced red ferric oxide.

THE origin of various types and groups of ore deposits was some years ago a subject of much controversy. To this statement the copper-nickel deposits near Sudbury afforded no exception. Not since the Report of the Ontario Nickel Commission, in 1917, has there been any serious discussion of the origin of this very important group. This may be because, from the opening-up of Murray mine by the British America Nickel Corporation until the recent work at Frood mine, no new ore-body of importance has been developed in the district. The controversy fifteen or twenty years ago between those who favoured the theory of magmatic segregation, among whom Dr. A. P. Coleman was the leading exponent, and those who considered that most, if not all of the Sudbury deposits could more satisfactorily be accounted for by the theory of replacement, will be remembered by many members of the Institute. Perhaps, as too often happens in controversial discussion, each side tended to overemphasize the importance of those geological phenomena which seemed to be most easily accounted for by the theory it favoured. A more balanced view would perhaps admit that replacement was probably predominant in the formation of most of the offset deposits, and magmatic segregation in that of most of the marginal deposits . But there is danger in generalization. Each body of ore should be studied by itself, and no general conclusion of this kind should be allowed to warp the judgment in making such a study.

"Major industrial restructuring, which started to manifest itself in the mature economies of the Western World and Japan in the 1970s, will accelerate in the 1980s and 1990s. Conventional heavy manufacturing industries will continue to lose ground to lighter processing/assembly operations and the new wave of high technology, information and service sectors. The decline in heavy manufacturing has severely impacted on the steel industries of Western Europe, the U.S.A . and Japan.World trade in metallurgical coal has shifted correspondingly, with declining demand in the mature developed countries being only partially offset by large increases in the steel intensity of the newly-industrialized countries (NICs) of the Far East, Latin America and, to a more limited extent, the Middle East and Africa. These trends will be accentuated in future years with direct implications for the distribution of metallurgical coal trade. This paper discusses, in quantitative terms, such changes in the 1980s and 1990s, and examines the implications for, and impacts on, Canadian metallurgical coal exporters.IntroductionThe twenty-year period from the early 1950 s to the early 1970s was characterized by inexorable growth in consumer demand and industrial expansion in most of the advanced countries of the western world. Long- term forecasting during this period typically used linear extrapolation techniques which , despite their simplicity, invariably ended up predicting future demand and production level s with uncanny accuracy. Times have changed!The last decade has been characterized by a n abysmal failure of our economies to respond to simple long-term, linear growth patterns. We appear to have entered a new world in transition, where we can observe a wave of dying or sunset industries reluctantly being submerged by a wave of emerging or sunrise industries.This paper is aimed a t examining the evidence for long-term industrial restructuring trend s. For want of a better word, these so -called, megatrends are then used to predict future demand level s and spatial distribution of steel development and , hence, metallurgical coal trade. It is tempting to correlate the decline in economic activity in the western world with the first Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' (OPEC) crisis of 1973. This crisis was probably no more than the straw that broke the camel's back, as the megatrends and embryo s of major industrial restructuring were already evident. Today these megatrends are merely more apparent and transparent than they were ten years ago.While the concept of industrial restructuring is the new economic buzz word, the process was at work, to a lesser degree even throughout the period of strong economic growth of the post-Second World War boom. Many people still remain convinced that our present-day sluggish economy is just part o f the typical , though rather more prolonged, recessionary cycle. Yet, we have always been part of a dynamic economic system and industry throughout history has been the subject of a continuous process of evolution, restructuring and reconstitution . Now the time is ripe to examine the evidence for such restructuring in order to develop coherent policies of adjustment in this transition from one industrial regime to another."

"In China, the electromagnetic induction initiating system f or blasting engineering has been greatly developed in recent years. With this system, the total number of detonators that may be blasted in each round has been increased from 420 to 940 as a result of the invention of a powerful exploder, and the length of leg wires of a detonator has reached 12 metres. These developments make the new system suitable for blasting engineering of medium scale. Another attractive feature of this system is a set of testing instruments which have been invented that enable a final check of the system to be made before firing as in normal electric blasting. This paper reports on these developments.IntroductionThe initiating system for blasting explosives is one of the key factors to the success of blasting engineering, along with the progress of explosives and blasting technology. Today, we have initiating systems which may be divided into two groups: electric and non-electric. The earliest initiating system was non-electric. Many mines, as well as many projects where rock excavation was involved, were blasting non-electrically before the new nonelectric initiating system came into use in the 1970s. Electric and non-electric initiating systems are the two main initiating systems which are now being widely used, each having its advantages and disadvantages. In electric blasting, the blasting supplies and the blasting circuit can be checked before it is used or fired and, therefore, is regarded to be more reliable. In many large-scale blasting engineering where reliability of the initiation is of great concern, a checkable initiating system is preferable. The electric initiating system is not considered to be as safe as the non-electric initiating system due to its inability to choose proper ignition energy. Therefore, a non-electrical initiating system would be preferable where a hazard of stray currents or static electric energy exists. At this stage of development, one would say it would be advantageous to develop a new initiating system."

Aluminum coatings can provide galvanic cathodic protection for several metals and alloys, In order to be a suitable protective solution on structural components, the mechanical integrity of the component must be preserved, In particular, fatigue properties are a challenge for thermal-spray protective coatings on mechanical structures, To address the issue of the fatigue integrity of 7075 aluminum alloy with an arc-sprayed protective coating, different surface preparations prior to arc spraying were considered, In the present work, a feasibility study was performed using laser ablation as a surface-preparation technique before or during arc spraying of coatings, This was collaborative effort between the LERMPS laboratory in France, the National Research Council Canada and the Royal Military College of Canada, Both fatigue and adhesive properties of aluminum coatings were evaluated in relation to substrate-surface-preparation techniques including laser ablation (Protal® process), grit blasting and shot peening. Results indicate that a combination of key conditions, including the use of nitrogen as the arc spray gas, shot peening, and proper laser energy density for ablation, provide high fatigue resistance of metallic coated 7075 alloy substrates. Specimens prepared under these conditions show a similar fatigue resistance to uncoated substrates.

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. In the present study, a series of cyanidation experiments were performed on a bulk sulfide concentrate which contained silver in four distinct phases, to determine its extraction rate, varying the oxygen concentration. The results showed that three of the four phases were refractory, aguilarite (Ag,iSeS) being the only leachable phase, and that the effect of the oxidant concentration is minimal. Mathematical simulations were performed, adjusting only the Damkohler number to adequately fit the experimental data. This model, and the mechanism implied, was compared with that found for acanthite (Ag2S) in a previous study, and the differences between the two discussed.

"New terrain maps provide information on the ground conditions in northern Ontario. This information has a relevance to mineral exploration because it assists the user in determining ground conditions prior to entering the area. The prospector, geologist, geophysicist and geochemist can then plan for the optimum use of exploration techniques best suited for theseground conditions.These terrain maps are the result of the Northern Ontario Engineering Geology Terrain Study-a program carried out by five consultants under contract to the Ontario Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The area mapped is 370,000 km2 and more than 100 basic data maps at a1:100,000 scale will be published.An unique terrain legend was derived to facilitate the mapping and it allows the derivation of specific user information. In fact, the principles have been known in the western world for at least 235 years (Shilts 1976). More recently, Dreimanis's classic work on boulder tracing (1957) and Lee's work (1971) emphasize the role of glacial geology in prospecting. In addition, papers by Smee and Sinha (1979), Averill (1978), Bereton (1978), and Gleeson and Hornbrook (1974) all describe the importance of drift in mineral exploration programs. The discovery of the copper deposit in the northern Ontario township of Currie (Thompson, 1979) is attributed in part to till prospecting methods. So the significance of the overburden is firmly established, both in the literature and in the minds of today's prospectors, geologists, geophysicists and geochemists."

The main application of refractories based on andalusite in ferrous metallurgy are in air heaters of blast furnaces, mobile mixers, and hot-metal transfer, pig iron ladle, steel-casting, and intermediate ladles. Three specific properties of andalusite are very interesting for the production of high-quality shaped and unshaped mullite refractories: being free of water, its crystal a remains stable without changing its density or volume after firing and therefore has no internal porosity .Graphite additives due to its great wetting ability play an important role in raising the property of refractory bodies. In order to improve properties of andalusite graphite bodies, oxidant agent for increasing in hot strength and oxidation resistance can not be avoided. In this research, firstly 8 pig iron ladles from ESC(esfahan Steel company) with different conditions selected and monitored during usage to determine of main factors affecting on corrosion of refractories. Results showed that tap to tap time, undischarged pig iron ,penetrated pig iron are the main ones.Literature studies showed that the graphite addition help to thermal shock resistance and liquid penetration(steel,pig iron) effect. In this research particle size distribution of aggregates containing andalusite and graphite determined by andreazen equation. Then different mixes with different percentage of graphite,Si, FeSi, SiC prepared by uniaxially pressing under 1500kgf/cm2 pressure by adding 4%wt novalak resin and 0.4%wt HMTA as hardner. Samples fired at 1100-1500oC under reduction atmosphere. According to specific standards density, porosity and CCS measured. Analytical tests such as XRD, SEM were carried out on sample selected from point of view of mechanical properties at different temperatures. Results showed that optimized amount of Si and Fe-Si for _-SiC formation in body is 4 and 6 %wt respectively at 1500OC. XRD and SEM analysis on sample with Fe-Si additives showed no destructive phase through the matrix, also SiC additives not only increase oxidation resistance but also no effect on thermo-mechanical properties.
