In many electronic/optoelectronic devices, interaction between the metal stack and solder is undesirable. If a reaction happens, a nonuniform joint containing spikes and voids is likely to form and as a result the heat dissipation deteriorates significantly, which in turn, leads to the degradation of the bond. In the present work the interaction between Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system, which was sputter deposited on AlN substrates, and Pb-Sn solder was studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, an EDX system was used to trace the changes in chemical composition of the layers after solder tests. The microstructural examinations show that the Ti and Mo layer from the Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system are not impermeable enough and thus Ca from the surface of the substrate moves all the way up to the interface of Au/Mo and forms an intermetallic at the interface, which grows over time.

"The Wasa Lake property is a block of about 1,640 acres in Beauchastel township, Quebec. Gold was discovered there first in 1936 in what is now known as the 'Southern area ( Fig. 1). Stripping and trenching were followed by 9,218 feet of diamond drilling in twenty holes. A number of good intersections were obtained, but their interpretation in terms of ore was difficult. A shaft was then sunk to 220 feet vertical depth. Thirteen hundred feet of lateral work and 543 feet of diamond drilling were completed at the 200-foot level before work was discontinued in 1938. Results up to this point had been just fair.Early in 1944, surface diamond drilling was resumed. The first hole cut material of ore grade in a strong shear zone 1,000 feet north of the old workings, and holes to the east and west showed this to be an extensive gold-bearing zone.In August 1945, a main working shaft was started. This has been sunk to 550 feet slope depth. A cross-cut at 390 feet vertical depth was driven to the ore zone and, by drifting and drilling at regular intervals, a length of 725 feet had been tested to December 31st, 1946 ( Figs. 1 and 2). The results check those from surface drilling quite closely.In the main zone, scoping widths from 8 to 40 feet and averaging about 25 feet are indicated. The grade after dilution should be about 0.15 oz. gold a ton and operation will probably start at 1,000 tons a day."

"The effects of brazing and use of composite powder mixture as interlayer material on hot corrosion resistance of brazed IN738 superalloy were studied. Brazing was observed to result in significant reduction in the hot corrosion resistance of the superalloy. However, application of composite powder mixture, which consists of additive superalloy powder, enhanced the hot corrosion resistance of brazed samples. It is also found that although the use of composite powder mixture increased hot corrosion resistance of brazed alloy, if the additive powder completely melts, which is possible during brazing, it can significantly reduce the hot corrosion resistance of the brazed joint. Elemental micro-segregation during solidification of the joint with completely melted powder mixture produces chromium depleted zones and consequently reduces hot corrosion resistance, since a uniform distribution and adequate chromium concentration is necessary to combat hot corrosion. This has not been previously reported in the literature and it is crucial to the use of composite powder mixture for enhancing the properties of brazed superalloys.INTRODUCTION Superalloys have been developed in response to the increasing demand for materials with higher resistance to corrosion and creep and also with higher mechanical strength at higher temperatures (Smith, 1981). Ni-base superalloys are predominantly used in manufacturing hot sections of gas turbine engine components. This is due to their high strength and corrosion resistance in extremely high temperature service environments which is typical for hot sections of gas turbine engines (Miglietti, 2009). The continuous demand for higher efficiency and output has resulted in the use of higher operating temperatures and gas pressure in modern gas turbine engines (Jahnke & Demny, 1983). Consequently, this has caused thermal and mechanical stresses which result in severe degradation and damage of gas turbine engine components due to creep, fatigue and hot corrosion (Zhang, Feng, & He, 2006). The decision to replace or repair damaged parts depends on the overall repair cost and expected life of the repaired components (Jahnke & Demny, 1983). However, in most cases, it is more cost effective to repair damaged parts rather than use a full replacement."

"The Banick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (Goldstrike) operation is located in Eureka County in north-central Nevada on the Carlin geological trend. Gold in the sulphide mill feed, occurs primarily as submicroscopic inclusions or possibly solid solution in a pyrite and marcasite matrix. Sulphide mill feed is pretreated in a pressure oxidation plant allowing gold recoveries of 90 per cent and greater to be achieved. Anticipated 1994 gold production for the sulphide gold facility is approximately 1,500,000 ounces.In January 1989 American Banick Resources Corporation (Banick) announced the US$365 million Betze Development Plan for the Goldstrike property. The Betze plan was based on a three (3) staged expansion of the original 4,500 STPD oxide gold plant. This expansion would involve addition of ore and gold processing capacity and the total conversion of all ore handling facilities to treating Betze sulphide ores.Phase 1 of the Betze Development Plan involved the construction of a pressure oxidation circuit, including a single autoclave and supporting ancillary services. The pressure oxidation circuit was commissioned in February 1990. Currently a throughput of 2,000 STPD is being achieved.Phase II of the Betze Development Plan, commissioned throughout April and May 1992, included the expansion of grinding, leaching, and gold recovery facilities enabling the treatment of combined oxide, and sulphide ore. Pressure oxidation capacity was increased by the addition of two (2) autoclave circuits each treating 2,600 STPD of sulphide ore and other required ancillary services. By June 1992, the Phase II gold facility had achieved a combined throughput of 15,000 STPD of oxide and sulphide ore.Phase Ill, the final stage of the Betze Development Plan, was successfully commissioned in February and March 1993. This final stage of development increased the design throughput of the pressure oxidation plant to 15,000 STPD by the addition of three (3) autoclave circuits with combined capacity of 7,800 STPD."

"With declining feed grade and increased production targets, it became necessary to upgrade Key Lake's eight stage counter current decantation (CCD) circuit. Following laboratory trials, mill operations recognized that dilution of the feed slurry and buffering of the feed density variations would improve thickener throughput. Plant testing resulted in the installation of Outokumpu's Supaflo ""Floe-Miser"" system. The circuit's flowsheet, instrumentation and control strategy were also upgraded along with the thickener feedwell modifications. The paper will also discuss these modifications and the implementation of the current control strategy.IntroductionCameco Corporation's Key Lake operation is the largest single uranium producer in the world. Current production is fourteen million pounds of uranium oxide (U 308) per year. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining with Cameco as the operator.The mine is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca basin. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.Process DescriptionThe Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants: crushing and grinding; leaching and counter current decantation (CCD); solvent extraction; yellowcake precipitation and ammonium sulphate crystallization; and bulk neutralization (Figure 1 -Simplified Mill Flowsheet). Arsenic extraction from Chilean copper concentrates up to nearly 99% was achieved, using hydrothermal reactions. Arsenic appears in nature in more than 200 mineral species, being arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4), and tennantite (Cu12As4S13) the most common species. In addition, arsenic is present in a large amount of copper concentrates, produced in northern Chile. Medical statistics show that in northern Chile, the amount of cancer to the lung, skin and bladder are the highest in the country. The latter situation, demonstrates the importance of studying metallurgical processes that do not generate atmospheric pollution. The hydrometallurgical processes such as hydrothermal treatment in autoclave reactors, do not produce gaseous emissions. On the other hand, the arsenic remains in solution from where it can be transformed in scorodite by widely known methods. Previous works about hydrothermal treatment of enargite have shown the feasibility of transforming the enargite of the copper concentrates into chalcocite or mineral species of the chalcocite family such as djurleite, digenite and for this reason enrich the concentrate in copper and pass the arsenic to solution. For this research, two Chilean copper concentrates were used, concentrate 1 with 5.5% arsenic and concentrate 3 with 1.8% arsenic. These concentrates were subjected to a complete chemical and mineralogical characterization. Later these concentrates were carry out to batch tests of hydrothermal treatment. Also, these concentrates were subjected to grinding to have different particle sizes. For the hydrothermal tests, a liter capacity Autoclave Engineer reactor was used. Characteristic of this reactor was the maximum temperature 350°C, 5000 PSI pressure, and 900 rpm agitation speed. Kinetic tests were carried out with the two concentrates maintaining the same solid: liquid relationship, the same agitation velocity and the variables studied were treatment temperature, time of reaction, concentration of copper in the solution and grain size of the concentrates. The conclusions of the study indicated arsenic extraction of the order of 93.98% from the concentrate 1 and arsenic extraction of the order of 98.74% from concentrate 3. After the hydrothermal treatment, the solids and solutions were characterized chemically, by electron microscopy and X ray diffraction. Also the solids were characterized by grainsize through a particle size analyzer (MICROTRAC). Results of batch treatment shows that arsenic can be release almost completely from real copper concentrates using this hydrothermal process and the next stage will be a scale up process in order obtain results for pilot plant design. INTRODUCTION Arsenic is an impurity that appears associated with copper minerals forming enargite, tennantite, tetrahedrite, and that due to the pyrometallurgical treatment either in conversion or roasting furnaces, it goes into the atmosphere together with the sulfur dioxide. A great quantity of literature can be found to eliminate arsenic or try to separate arsenic from copper. The methods used are mainly leaching processes with or without pressure (Padilla, Jerez & Ruiz, 2015) with different reagents like chloride media (Herreros, Fuentes, Quiroz & Viñals, 2003) or chloride media with sulphuric acid (Riveros & Dutrizac, 2008) or sodium hypochlorite (Mihajlovic, Strbac, Zivkovic, Kovacevic & Stehernik, 2007). It is known too that Chile is the first copper producer in the world and a great quantity of its minerals are in the north of the country, in Antofagasta.

In the present study the effect of Silicate Sodium oxidation agent concentration and Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) treatment time were investigated on properties of oxide layer on Aluminum alloy. The phase composition and surface morphology of PEO films were evaluated through x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Pin on Plate abrasive machine were used to investigate of were resistance of coating. The results showed that oxide layer which formed on Aluminum surface consist of high temperature a- Al?O? and ?- Al?O? phases. The diffraction peak intensity and percentage of these phases were increased by increasing silicate sodium concentration. Microscopic studies revealed a porous surface for PEO coating. This was affected by silicate sodium concentration and oxidation time. The wear test results showed that the weight loss of PEO coating was reduced due to improvement of their wear resistance.

Extraction by organic solvents is a chemical process in which metal species in the aqueous phase react with an organic reagent to form an organometallic com- plex, thus, the metal species leave the aqueous phase and enter the organic phase from which it can be stripped back in the aqueous phase to obtain a pure and a concentrated solution. The metal in the organic phase is not bound to carbon atoms as in organometallic compounds but to oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, or hydrogen by a co-ordination (dative) bond (Habashi, 1999).Solvent extraction was used for the first time in hydrometallurgy in connec- tion with the special and urgent materials requirements of nuclear energy during World War II. A plant was constructed in the United States for the preparation of high-purity uranyl nitrate solution. In this plant, the yellow cake (a high-grade sodium or ammonium uranate) was dis- solved in HNO,, and uranium was selec- tively extracted by ether then stripped by water to give a concentrated solution of pure uranyl nitrate. This was gradually followed by developing methods for other high-priced metals such as plutonium, thorium, niobium, tantalum, zirconium, hafnium, boron, beryllium, and molybde num. The second step took place in the 1960s when solvent extraction was applied for the first time to extract a rela- tively cheap metal-copper. At present, solvent extraction technology is wide- spread, well accepted, and highly efficient. "In spite of the applications of DEM models to emulate the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and strengths of isotropic rock in laboratory scale, extensions to anisotropic rock and larger engineering scale still have many challenges to overcome such as robust verification and validation against observed field case. In this study, a discrete element modeling was performed in order to represent a transversely isotropic rock such as shale, and the upscaled model was applied to foundation and borehole problems using PFC2D. The applicability of the upscaled rock mass model was verified by an analytical solution. The DEM modeling of stress redistribution induced by an applied surface line load compares well with Boussinesq’s isotropic solution and anisotropic solution given by Bray. The borehole model with a circular opening under biaxial stress was compared with both isotropic and anisotropic solutions resulting in good agreement. The abilities of DEM model to investigate the micromechanisms accounting for complex macroscopic behaviors and to predict the macroscopic behavior are discussed.The results demonstrate that DEM modeling has the potential to be applied to anisotropic rock mechanics problems on larger engineering scales such as wellbore stability problems especially in shale formations. Furthermore, the effect of anisotropy modeled through this study may be able to explain failure behavior of anisotropic rock encountered frequently in real cases.INTRODUCTIONAnisotropy is prevalent in various types of rocks, especially in shale that contain a set of parallel bedding planes. These weak planes in various forms are sources of large deformation and low shear strength and contribute significantly to the anisotropic behavior of rocks (Amadei, 1996; Cho et al., 2012; Kim et al., 2012). As elastic and strength behavior of anisotropic rock is substantially different from that of isotropic rock, proper consideration of anisotropy is of great importance. There is extensive of experimental evidence showing the anisotropy of shale. Niandou et al. (Niandou et al., 1997) analyzed the plastic deformation and failure mechanisms of Tournemire shale were highly dependent on the orientation of bedding planes. Cho et al. (Cho et al., 2012) presented various deformations and strengths of Boryeong shale obtained from laboratory experiments. Fjaer and Nes (Fjaer and Nes, 2013) performed uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength tests using Mancos shale, and they observed that the shear sliding along the planes of weakness before the occurrence of a major failure can reduce the strength of anisotropic rock. The recent research has demonstrated that the anisotropy of rock is an important consideration in rock engineering."

For many years the value of qualitative microscopic investigation has been recognized in both of the fields of pure and applied science. In particular, its aid has been invoked in the determination of rock specimens in thin section, and some at least of the interrelations of minerals present in any one section have been observed and, to a limited extent, applied for the solution of different problems. During the past decade this form of research has also been diverted to the determination of ore minerals in polished section, with some observation of their structural relations. Microscopic research of a quantitative character, on the other hand, while started nearly one hundred years ago, has found but a limited application in petrography and has scarcely been used at all in the more modern science of mineragraphy. This is very largely due to the methods employed, since most of them consumed too much time and were, in addition, too laborious to encourage many workers in their use. The details of procedure for these earlier methods will be found in another paper by the writer, and will be omitted from this discussion as being of small interest to practical mining men.

"The objective of the laboratory work described in this paper has been to develop a method f or producing small gas bubbles at moderate to high gas rates in a flotation column. Small bubbles are particularly important for attaining reasonable flotation rates of fine particles. An ultrasonic aerosol generator has been employed to add frother solution directly to the gas stream. Using porous glass and filter cloth spargers, aerosol frother addition has produced bubbles at 1/2 to 2/3 the diameter of those produced by conventional frother addition to the liquid, at a lower frother consumption.IntroductionGas bubbles are generated in a flotation column most commonly by forcing gas through a porous medium called a sparger. Typical sparger material includes rubber (pierced with small holes) , fabric (such as filter cloth), fritted glass, or porous metal (steel or bronze) . Solid sparger material is suitable for laboratory use; however, for industrial applications a flexible sparger such as rubber or fabric is necessary to prevent the eventual plugging of orfices with solid particles and/ or precipitates. An exception to this is the use of a gas liquid contactor external to the column in combination with pressure release of gas in water, a method that has been demonstrated to produce very small gas bubbles. The typical objective of bubble generation for flotation column purposes is to produce bubbles with diameter of about 0.1 cm (and less) at a gas superficial velocity of 1 cm/s to 3 cm/s. In general, the smaller the bubble, the better. In man y cases, though, there is little , or nothing, gained by generating bubbles less than about 0.05 ern in diameter.Several factors affect bubble size when generated by a sparger: gas rate, orifice diameter, sparger surface area, surfactant type, surfactant dosage, and static head. At very low gas rates bubble diameter is independent of flow rate and is proportional to orifice diameter. At the moderate gas rates encountered in flotation columns bubble diameter, db' is related to gas flow by: db oc vg n, where vg is superficial gas velocity (rate of gas flow per unit column area). For porous steel and filter cloth, n has a value of about 0.25 for vg between 0.2 cm/s and 2 cm/s(2). The magnitude of the effect of orifice diameter at these gas rates is unclear. The effects of frother type and concentration on bubble size issuing from a single orifice have been measur ed by Miagkovaru , shown here in Figure I(IS). The reduction in bubble diameter upon surfactant addition is due to the lowering of interfacial tension created by adsorption of surfactant at the gas liquid interface."

Pyrrhotite-rich tailings from Sudbury, Ontario mining activities are known to contain significant amounts of EV metals, such as nickel and cobalt.  CanmetMINING has developed a novel bioleaching process for recovering the nickel and cobalt (both critical for vehicle electrification) from tailings that incorporates partial neutralization and iron removal in the bioleaching circuit; bench- and pilot-scale tests have resulted in excellent nickel and cobalt recovery over a range of temperatures.  However, this process generates a new bioleach residue, which is heavier and more voluminous than the original tailings due to pyrrhotite oxidation and jarosite formation during the bioleaching process. This residue can be problematic for long-term disposal. A possible solution being studied for this issue is using mine backfill as a disposal mechanism.  Underground backfilling allows for effective re-purposing of mine waste, however the backfill must also be able to withstand a certain load, since in most cases it is used as an underground construction material, such as in cut-and-fill mining methods.  Therefore, the composition of the mill tailings must be such that when combined with a binding agent and pumped underground, the slurry or paste is then able to withstand a certain load within a certain period of time.  Unfortunately, high-pyrrhotite content tailings, commonly found on mine sites in Ontario and Quebec, are reactive and can easily oxidize and produce acidity and/or metal-laden drainage under some disposal conditions. This means that the pyrrhotite in the tailings can lead to acid mine drainage if stored on surface, however, it can also cause strength degradation if re-purposed in too high a concentration in underground mine backfill.  The research being done at CanmetMINING related to the bioleaching process is aimed not only at recovering nickel and cobalt from mine tailings, it is also being used in an attempt to neutralize the tailings to reduce acid mine drainage and backfill strength degradation. This paper reports on research designed to evaluate different options for transforming the bioleaching process residue into iron oxide phases, for better environmental footprints if stored on surface, as well as increased disposal possible, if re-purposed as underground mine backfill material.

Current practice tends towards "integrity as an afterthought". That is, integrity is treated as an isolated aspect of operations and maintenance. In fact, this works quite well. But it would work so much better and with less uncertainty if integrity management measures were introduced at the design phase and addressed the entire life-cycle of the pipeline asset. The talk will address the measures and metrics that can be implemented on a new pipeline during design to optimize integrity and deliver a comprehensive operating manual and integrity management program for the pipeline system. This deliverable should describe the risks to be assessed and monitored, and the actions to be taken to control these risk adequately. Properly executed, integrity by design will provide a good working estimate of the life-cycle integrity management costs and maximize system reliability.

MILLING of Nova Scotia gold ores began in 1862 with arrastras and wooden stamps and has progressed to heavier stamps followed by tables and other forms of concentration for the recovery of the sulphides. Chlorination and cyanide leaching of the concentrates has been practised, and in 1936 the combined amalgamation and all-sliming cyanidation plant of Seal Harbor Gold Mines was built. It has since been found that it is not necessary to cyanide the full tonnage and now only the concentrates are being so treated. From his experience in this enterprise, the writer presents the accompanying flow-sheet and supporting comments. While he has not the temerity to maintain that it is the best or only flow-sheet for Nova Scotia gold ores, he feels that it warrants thoughtful consideration by members of the milling fraternity of the Province. THE ORE The gold in Nova Scotia ores occurs both free and intimately associated with sulphides-chiefly arsenopyrite. Much of the free gold is quite coarse and crystalline. This is especially true when it occurs in white quartz. When in the slate, it is usually in thin plates and scales, frequently coated and discoloured. The values bound up in the sulphides are not amenable to amalgamation and must be recovered by other methods-concentration, followed by smelting or fine grinding and cyanidation. While high freight and treatment charges apply on concentrates shipped from the Province to smelters, a considerable quantity has been so disposed of in the past. However, it is hoped that a customs cyanidation plant will soon become available to producers of these auriferous concentrates in Nova Scotia.

"In 2002, Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator installed an Expert Control system for optimization of their SAG and Ball milling circuits. The advanced process control has been well received and is utilized well over 95% of the time. In the years since, many lessons have been learned and many advances have been made. Improvements have produced millions of dollars of benefits and have included directly controlling feedrate with complex logic as opposed to using a bearing pressure controller, modifications to how sound is used for control, modifying logic for maximizing asset utilization and using advanced control for automating equipment restart. INTRODUCTIONRio Tinto’s Kennecott Copperton Concentrator produces copper, molybdenum, gold and silver. The mill has 4 SAG mills (SAG 1-3, 34 foot diameter and SAG 4 36 foot diameter), 8 ball mills and copper and molybdenum flotation plants, as seen in Figure 1. The 2010 average data is shown in Table 1.In 2002, a Metso Cisa OCS Expert Control system was installed at Copperton for SAG and Ball mill advanced control. The expert control was first placed on SAG 2; data from the first few weeks compared with operator performance indicated approximately an 11 percent increase in throughput. After full commissioning, the system was gradually refined further by plant personnel to develop key performance indices based on SAG feed size, refinement of the sound setpoint for control of mill speed and throughput, specific rules to help the adjustment of speed based on loss of a feeder, etc. With the addition of the pebble crushing circuit, the expert control began utilizing a model estimation of crushed pebble bin level to help stabilize the impact of returned crushed and uncrushed pebbles on the SAG mills. As the ore and limitations change, it is necessary to evolve the SAG logic to better handle any constraints."

The adsorption of magnesium and calcium ions on sphalerite and pyrite is discussed. These ions are common in process water and often considered be detrimental in sulphide flotation. The study attempts to characterize the adsorption mechanism, which has been less studied than the oxide system. Generally for oxides metal ion uptake occurs when cations are hydrolyzed. Our findings reveal that magnesium and calcium adsorb on sulphides at pH below hydrolysis, but adsorption is not chemical. At higher pH, charge reversal occurs that does correspond to presence of hydrolysis products. Advances

In 1997, the Zinifex Hobart Smelter ceased ocean disposal of jarosite and the flowsheet was converted to reject iron as paragoethite. This paper describes the evolution of the flowsheet since the changeover and considers future flowsheet developments. The major change to the flowsheet has been an increase in the silica content of the calcine resulting from treating increasing levels of Century concentrate. The high silica levels impacted on the paragoethite precipitation stage, causing a deterioration in the settling and filtration characteristics of the paragoethite and an increase in the contained zinc level. The implementation of a two stage neutral leach step has enabled the flowsheet to cope with the higher input silica levels. Future developments include an understanding of the form of the zinc in the paragoethite and options to lower the zinc level to improve the overall zinc recovery.

The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia’s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

Grand Junction, Colorado’s legacy with uranium mining and milling serves as a model attracting international interest. Access to water and central location to carnotite ore containing uranium and vanadium resulted in the World War II military creating a site in Grand Junction for developing extraction techniques; subsequently, several commercial mill sites were built in the area. Uranium mills produced ore into the 1970’s as well as tonnes of radioactive waste tailings. Tailings contain radium that emits radon gas. Despite the radiation hazard, sandy tailings were added to concrete and became incorporated into roads, schools, businesses and homes. Clean up of sites containing tailings and mill sites began in the 1970’s involving city, state, and federal officials. The Climax mill site had become an auto junk yard mixed with mill tailings. A new disposal site was built out of town and away from the river in the 1990’s. After Climax mill tailings were removed to the disposal site, the land sat vacant for two decades until citizens and city officials developed a masterplan for the riverfront property. The Las Colonias river park is being built in stages including an amphitheater, gardens, businesses and parks. One of the biggest obstacles to site remediation and reuse was overcoming public outrage, fear, and lack of trust which made funding sources scarce.

"Ores enriched in critical rare earth elements (CREE) keep on being of particular interest. The CREE are Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, including Y. In conjunction with beneficiation tests on Y-mineral bearing flotation tailings of complicated mineralogy, the Mineral Liberation Analyses (MLA) was used to work out processing characteristics fraction-wise in terms of modal mineralogy, mineral recovery, locking and liberation, and particle size.Size fractions from mechanical sieving (“real fractions”) as well as fractions created virtually by using filters on the MLA-data of the unsieved head material (“virtual fractions”) were investigated comparatively thereby. The ""virtual-sizing-approach"" features a much simpler sample preparation procedure and considerably lower cost if a fraction-wise investigation of a head sample is needed. It can be conveniently applied to intimately locked ores needing a fine grinding to a particle size distribution (PSD) range below 25 microns for instance. However, its practical use is sometimes disputed in terms of the reliability of the results. Results are shown for the main Y-bearing mineral xenotime and selected main gangue minerals of a low grade REE-ore.The influence of sample representativeness, sample preparation and particle counting statistics turned out to be of crucial importance. Given that all preconditions for reliable results are met, locking characteristics, modal mineralogy, and even PSD trends can be read from virtual fractions.The authors encourage processing engineers to use the virtual approach. They propose practical measures to improve the reliability of the MLA results, identify and tackle conflicting results, and mitigate evaluation problems that may arise."
