Although the pattern of metamorphic zones south of the Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault is much obscured by polymetamorphism, displacement of the orthopyroxene isograd by the fault agrees with the displacement of a horizon of "banded aplite" mapped by Andrews (1922). A dextral transcurrent component of 20,000 ft is indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe east-west Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault (Andrews, 1922; King and Thomson, 1953), one of the major geological structures in the Broken Hill district, New South Wales, cuts across the general north-easterly strike of outcrops and fold structures of the Willyama Complex. The degree of shearing and recrystallization in its unusually wide crush zone and the manner in which adjacent rock units and structures have been dragged into conformity with its strike denote considerable movement on the fault. Information concerning the nature of this movement is of critical importance in the search for possible continuations or repetitions of lead-zinc mineralization south-west of Broken Hill.A transcurrent movement of 20,000 ft, with the southern block moving west, was estimated by Andrews (1922), who correlated prominent outcrops of "banded aplite" at The Pinnacles (north of the fault) and Big Hill (south of the fault). Displacement of this order, however, does not seem sufficient to explain the extent and character of the fault zone. Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, " Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack," read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that 'which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.

Conventional flotation technology has historically failed to achieve high recoveries when treating <15 µm particles (Lynch et al, 1981). The new StackCell™ flotation technology was developed to specifically target this particle size range, and was tested at pilot plant scale at Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The streams tested, Slimes Rougher Tailings and Fines/Slimes Cleaner Tailings, represent 21% and 11% of the total nickel lost to tailings in the plant. Laboratory scale test work indicated that an economically significant fraction of these losses was consistently available to be recovered by additional flotation. The pilot plant experimental scope included over 50 tests. A grade recovery curve for each stream was developed, as well as information on the effect of ore type, feed rate, wash water, air flow, collector and frother on the performance of the cell. The single StackCell was able to achieve nickel recoveries of 16.8% and 16.5% on the Rougher Tailings and Cleaner Tailings, respectively, at grades consistent with these blocks. Additional test work of the StackCell in a cleaner scalper duty yielded final quality concentrate with a maximum nickel recovery of 59.5% for the single stage StackCell. Laboratory scale simulation of the downstream impacts of the StackCell operating as a cleaner scalper indicated a net recovery benefit of up to 2.0% for this cleaner block.Tests were completed to compare residence time requirements of the StackCell, as compared to conventional flotation. In 55 seconds, the pilot plant StackCell achieved 50% of the recovery of a 960 second laboratory scale conventional flotation on the same feed material. The apparent improvement in flotation kinetics is attributed to the novel high intensity aeration system, which provides efficient bubble-particle contact thereby shortening the residence time required to achieve high recoveries. The smaller footprint and lower energy costs of such a cell are also benefits of this technology, which is being considered for industrial scale installation as a result of this test work. Troy Resources acquired the Karouni Gold Project in Guyana, South America in 2014 and immediately proceeded to a Pre-Feasibility Study and project implementation. The study considered two open pit mines feeding a conventional carbon in leach (CIL) gold plant with a capacity of 1Mtpa. The study assumed a total of 2.61 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 3.84 g/t gold with a recovered gold production of 303,526 ounces over a three year mine life.The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, securing second-hand major pieces of equipment where suitable, and arranging shipping to Guyana. The remote location meant logistical considerations were paramount. The plant consists of conventional two-stage crushing with single stage ball milling and a gravity circuit. The tailings circuit includes DETOX.The extremely high rainfall presented challenges with water management and the necessity to dispose of clean water to the environment. The DETOX was also mandatory due to the highly sensitive environment and past history in the area. The criticality of this meant that in the design, any cyanide in the tailings would precipitate in a plant shutdown.Lessons were learned and the project has been both profitable and successful for Troy Resources in a new operating location. The disasters between 1920 and 1979 in coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales due to underground fire, gas or coal dust explosion or to gas or coal outbursts, have been assessed. The evidence relating to disasters caused by gas explosion points strongly to divergence from safe mining practice as the main cause. There is a need for greater training and education of personnel, closer analysis of gas reports, better monitoring and testing procedures, improved ventilation standards and a policy where safe working practice is actively encouraged. Conditions in the New South Wales occurrences of gas explosion were similar to those at Collinsville, Queensland in that dykes, igneous sills, burnt out coal and faulting were common to all. Information on outbursts indicates that contributing factors were intrusions, depth of cover, fault zones and other geological disturbances, methods of work, pressure and type of gas.

The stability of parallel underground coal mine galleries and pillars have been investigated using two- and three-dimensional (3D) numerical stress analysis. Anisotropic horizontal in situ stresses and the direction of the excavations have been considered in the numerical analysis. The stability of the tunnels driven in a coal seam at various working depths has been investigated taking into account different strata conditions and then results from two- and three-dimensional numerical modelling studies were compared. Maximum principal stress components have been chosen in three various directions: vertical, parallel and perpendicular to the tunnel axis. Analysis have shown that in the anisotropic in situ stress field, the favourable direction of underground mine openings which have different strata conditions depend not only on the horizontal in situ stresses but also on the vertical in situ stresses. Furthermore, 3D numerical modelling studies have been carried out to investigate stability of multiple entry longwall panel gate roads and pillars with various width-to-length ratios (W/L). Results of the modelling studies have shown that the critical dimension of coal pillars depends on their width and the direction of maximum horizontal stresses.

Stripping of Fe (III) from D2EHPA Using Different Reagents The common way to extract Fe(III) from an organic solvent is by using concentrated acidic solutions. The stripping of Fe(III) from organic solvent Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) by hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions has been found to increase with increasing the acid concentration. However, the use of a concentrated acidic solution such as 6 M HCl can degrade the organic molecules. In this research, to increase the efficiency of Fe(III) stripping from D2EHPA, effect of some acids, salts and buffer solutions was studied. Influence of Tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier on the Fe(III) stripping operation was also investigated. According to the results, the best Fe stripping recovery was achieved in the presence of low acid concentration and the salts which was 72.4 per cent oxalic acid, 70 per cent ammonium oxalate and 75 per cent buffer of oxalic acid and ammonium oxalate. The results also showed a better recovery in the presence of the buffer rather than the salt. Finally, increasing the concentration of TBP, HCl and H2SO4 resulted in a higher stripping efficiency of Fe(III). However, in the presence of oxalic acid and its salts increasing the reagent concentration did not increase the stripping efficiency and at this condition, the recovery of iron remained constant.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computerised management systems for spatial data, offering improved data management, extensive data manipulation techniques and greater understanding of data. At the Wangaloa Coal Mine, South-East Otago, ArcGIS is being used to manage, integrate, analyse and visualise the diverse range of datasets being generated from an interdisciplinary research team. GIS will assist with identifying spatial and temporal patterns associated with the current site rehabilitation strategy. This paper will present an overview of how GIS can be a useful tool for understanding ecological recovery during mine site rehabilitation.   The Wangaloa opencast coal mine, owned by Solid Energy NZ Ltd, was closed in 1989 after more than 40 years of operation. Rehabilitation efforts involving more than 60 000 native plants began in October 2001. At Wangaloa sample points were randomly selected at 100 m intervals and recorded using a differential GPS. Plant, soil and invertebrate data have been collected at each sample point. Plots of 8 - 9 plants have been established within approximately 5 m of each sample point. Since September 2003 seasonal monitoring of plant growth and survival has been carried out. Chemical and physical datasets have been generated from soil collected in June and December 2003 for each sample point. A more restricted dataset is being generated for soil collected on a seasonal basis from March 2004. Plant and soil characteristics from these datasets have been attached to each sample point and GIS layers have been created. Relationships between data layers can be explored based on their spatial patterns. Examples presented from Wangaloa include distribution of planting success and temporal variation; temporal change in pH; interpolated pH map; digital elevation model; relationships between planting success and growth with pH and organic matter. GIS is proving to be a valuable tool on the integrated project at Wangaloa.

While the search for new technology breakthroughs is important, huge gains are still available by better using existing research outcomes. This potential remains untapped due to a combination of organisational 'silos', inappropriate performance measurement, and poor science in some areas. It is time to see the elephant in the mill.

During the drilling campaign conducted between October, 1942; and May, 1943, to prove the extent of the scheelite deposit worked by King Island Scheelite N.L. at Grassy, King Island, Tasmania, 35 holes were drilled and 606 samples recovered and assayed for their content. Of these, 238 came from outside the limits of the orebody and were for the most part barren, although a few contained some scheelite. The present statistical analysis is made only of the 368 samples taken from diamond-drill cores of the orebody itself.Drilling Pattern and Sampling MethodsFrom the purely statistical viewpoint, it is realised that methods employed in selecting sites for diamong.-drilling, and of collecting samples from drill cores, do not give a completely unbiassed set of data for analysis. Fig. 1 is a sketch plan showing the relativepositions of the drillholes, which were inclined at an angle of depression of 50 deg. The pattern does not conform to a properly randomized and' regularly-spaced grid, the positions of the later holes being determined by the results obtained from previous holes.Statistically, the bias is, therefore, favourable. The unequal spacing of the drill holes and the lack of uniformity in direction of the lines along which the holes were drilled are unsatisfactory from the mathematical viewpoint; but it is realised that these irregularitiesare difficult to avoid in determining by the most economical methods the extent of such an orebody, and are dictated by geological rather than mathematical necessity.Sampling, also, is lacking in complete uniformity. Each sample is approximately 10ft. in length. However, owing to the fact that 100% recovery of core is rarely achieved, and actual lengths of samples taken are ,primarily governed by the length of the drill runs,and secondarily by lithological changes, there is a considerable amount of variation in the sample length.AssayingWith the exception of 28 samples from three drill holes all samples dealt with in this paper were assayed in the Melbourne University Ore-Dressing Laboratory of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. These assays were given to the nearest 0.05% WOg as it was considered that more accurate determination was not possible. This fact has been taken into consideration in the frequency analysis below. The 28 assays determined by the Tasmanian Mines Department were given to the nearest 0.01%.

Direct transfer, or community translocation, comprises salvage and replacement of intact æsodsÆ of vegetation together with underlying soil. It has been applied to New Zealand mine sites restoration of native grasslands, wetlands, scrub lands, and forest. It is an equivalent technique to æinstant lawn or tree gardenÆ, commonly used in urban landscaping. Two to six m2 scoops of vegetation, with up to 0.7 m of soil attached, and including root plates of trees and shrubs, are relocated from stripped areas ahead of mining to sites prepared for restoration. Direct transfer uses hydraulic excavators or face shovels and dump trucks, possibly with the aid of bulldozers and other earthmoving machinery. The main advantages of direct transfer, compared with sowing or planting systems for mine site restoration, are the recycling of plant and soil materials which were often wasted by burying under overburden materials, a significantly faster revegetation process, and restoration of the whole ecosystem (plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, and microbes). The main disadvantages are higher costs of stripping and dumping, a greater degree of machine operator skill required, and scheduling becomes critically important. To illustrate the key principles, this paper gives examples of successes and failures of the technique for a variety of New Zealand mining situations. Direct transfer has been successful for a range of communities, from fern wetland and sub-alpine tussock grasslands to 5 m-tall beech forest under storey and seral shrub land, and from temperate to sub-alpine climates. Successful examples show both rapid recovery of indigenous vegetative cover and conservation of habitat for birds and invertebrates. Failures have resulted from excessive death of plants because of inadequate soil salvage depths, acidic leachates, inappropriate handling of stripped sods by inexperienced machinery operators, or prolonged drought conditions immediately following relocation. Change in plant species composition has occurred where clumps of vegetation are too far apart, or shifted plants were too small - in both cases invasive weeds have smothered the original vegetation. Changes in hydrology can also have significant impacts. Our experience indicates that the advantages of direct transfer far outweigh the disadvantages and is now used as the preferred restoration method, where practicable, at mines where it has been trialled.

If the industry keeps doing what it has always done, it will continue to get what it has always got - rising operating costs. Why is this so? Generally grades being chased are becoming lower, stripping ratios becoming higher, ability to attract personnel to the industry becoming harder and/or more expensive, higher safety standards are being demanded and environmental governance is being enforced.   How then should the surface mining industry plan for the future whilst delivering on improved safety and the environment? In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) points the way, as a partial or complete substitute for trucks.   IPCC systems promise significant advantages over traditional truck and shovel operations, including improved safety, reduced operating costs, reduced dust and noise emissions, far greater efficiency in energy use (electric versus diesel motors predominantly and the ability to regenerate electricity back into the local grid for downhill situations), reduced carbon emissions (dependent on power generation source) and reduced water consumption. Despite these advantages, there is a general industry reluctance to migrate from truck and shovel operations. This reluctance stems from a familiarity with truck and shovel operations and a perceived concern that IPCC lacks flexibility which will negatively impact on the mining operation.   In studies conducted since 2007 (with the new modular builds) comparing IPCC with truck-optimised pit designs, IPCC has delivered up to USD$0.82 per tonne moved less than an equivalent truck operation. In addition, IPCC is easily automated from a central control room (local or remote) - something that trucks have yet to commercially achieve.   IPCC is a proven process that, with a fresh mindset, can make a significant improvement to mining operations - its safety, the impact on the environment and its costs. It maybe of interest to note that there is over 200 IPCC installations worldwide today.   This paper and presentation will assist in furthering the understanding of IPCC and its applicability.

Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. Drilling and blasting are an essential part of most mining operations, and are commonly major operating cost centres. The effectiveness of blasting can have a significant influence on all subsequent activities, and hence overall operating costs. Drilling and blasting systems must be compatible with the overall mining method, to minimise total costs and ensure operational efficiency. Selection of suitable equipment and techniques requires an understanding of the total operation, plus current skills in specialised technologies. This paper examines the contribution of drilling and blasting to total costs, including the balance between capital and operating costs. The use of computer modelling is discussed, to demonstrate how blast performance and costs can be predicted and alternatives analysed. Case studies illustrate how cost savings can be made in operating mines, and alternative systems evaluated to optimise new projects.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. The new legislative regime applying to the mining industry has been in force for nearly two years. However the parameters for the permits required under the Crown. Minerals Act 1991 and the resource consents required under the Resource Management Act 1991 are still being established. Mining operators will benefit from participating in the development of policies and plans currently being formulated by local authorities. The Energy Legislation Amendment Bill currently before the House contains amendments to the Crown Minerals Act to clarify points of uncertainty and to reduce transaction costs where possible.

Conventional hand drawn isopach maps of the cover of the Bulli Seam are too eomplex for use in the delineation of large domains of similar cover. Isopach maps prepared from trend surfaces fitted to the cover data are much simpler in form and so provide a convenient method of delineating broad domains of similar cover.

The contiguous Kotre Basantpur and Pachmo (KBP) coal blocks in the Hazaribagh District of Jharkhand State in east India are being developed by Tata Steel Limited (Tata Steel) to supply coking coal to a new steel mill at Kalinganagar in Orissa.The planning challenges are many. The multiple coal seams range in thickness up to 6 m and extend to nearly 500 m depth, with dips up to 25¦ and highly variable quality. Several normal faults with throws up to 150 m intersect the deposit. There is little room for waste dumping on the lease, several large nalas (seasonal creeks) cross the blocks, and the KBP leases are not contiguous with Tata Steel's existing mining operations at West Bokaro. Geotechnical conditions, while not well defined at this stage, are largely unfavourable. There are several villages on the blocks, and extensive paddy fields. In 2009, Adelaide Mining Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a production level of 8 Mt/a. A terrace mining system was proposed using 28 m3 hydraulic excavators and 185 t trucks working horizontal up-dip slices. Subsequently the viability of in-pit crushing and conveying was assessed, but the full results were not available for this paper.It is planned to extract a total of 147 Mt of raw coal at a strip ratio of 5.2 bank cubic metres per tonne (bcm/t). The planned maximum pit depth is over 300 m.The project includes a washery, a 2 + 25 MW fluidised bed power station to utilise all the coarse washery rejects, and a railway spur line to carry the washed coal to the railhead some 7 km distant.
