The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. The monosaccharides glucose, galactose and arabinose, and the polyols glycerol and mannitol (0.1 Ufo WIV) supported pure and mixed culture heterotrophic bacterial manganese leaching of solid pyrolusite (MnO2, 2% W/V) to yield 14-38 mg/litre manganous ion in 3 days from a simple mineral salts media at 30°C. Supplementation of pure bacterial isolates growing on glucose with soluble intracellular photosynthate from freshwater algae (0.07 g/l carbohydrate) and marine algae (0.11 g/l) led to an improvement in Mn++ yields of 24 and 100 per cent respectively. Extracellular products of the freshwater algae (0.3 g/l carbohydrate) boosted recoveries by 57 per cent.

The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

An extensive suite of elements are routinely assayed on all resource drill core samples to assist in deposit scale resource definition, local mine scale delineation of ore zones, and ore characterisation for the planning and scheduling of mining and processing of ores at Olympic Dam. This paper discusses a deposit scale geochemical relation that can be used by mine geologists to find more high-grade ore at the local mine area scale at Olympic Dam.A 3D grade shell representing 0.8 per cent Cu was created for a mine area using drill hole assay data. This defined the geometry of the ore zone. The Cu-grade shell was then overlain onto the existing resource block model to evaluate the relationships between the Cu-grade shell, copper and other elements. The strongest correlation was between copper and manganese. The block model showed a dramatic decrease in the concentration of manganese just below the below the Cu-grade shell.Several drill holes that intersected the Cu-grade shell were selected to evaluate the copper manganese relation at the drill hole scale. As expected, the individual drill holes displayed a strong inverse relation between copper and manganese. A geochemical footwall was then modelled representing 0.1 wt per cent Mn. Using both the Cu– and Mn-grade shells, several drill holes were designed/drilled and all hit high-grade copper.For the vast majority of the deposit the inverse relation between copper and manganese is valid; however, in areas with intense chlorite alteration (related to amounts of mafic to ultramafic rocks) this relation is not as strong, due to increased manganese in the rock mass. Even though using the copper manganese relation as a drill targeting method was not always as reliable in a few small areas of the deposit, it demonstrates the value of using existing assay data integrated with the resource block model to discover local mine scale geochemical relationships which can be used to more effectively design drill holes to discover high-grade ore at Olympic Dam.CITATION:Griffith, J and Ehrig, K, 2017. Coromandel Peninsula gold mineralisation has an epithermal style which involves extensive alteration of host rocks and addition of pyrite over large volumes of rock. These altered rocks therefore have high potential for generating acid rock drainage. Natural acid groundwater discharges occur in altered rocks, but not in propylitically altered rock. There is little calcite available in mineralised rocks to neutralise this acid. In contrast, the mesothermal veins of the Otago Schist cause little alteration of the host rock, and that alteration has similar mineralogy to the host rock. Calcite is a common mineral in host and mineralised zones, and sulphides are generally subordinate. Hence acidification of Otago rocks is unlikely. This lack of acidification in Otago facilitates arsenic mobility in solution, up to hundreds of ppm. Arsenic is insoluble under acidic conditions in the Coromandel. Base metals are soluble under acidic conditions of the Coromandel, but they are immobilised by adsorption on to the widespread clay minerals where the solutions are neutralised. Base metals are generally immobile in Otago, but when they are mobilised, adsorption is less effectiveas an attenuation mechanism because clay minerals are rare.

The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.

Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...

Environmental investigations have been undertaken by Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) since 1981 when the Ok Tedi Environmental Study was commenced. Environmental monit- oring and management programmes were implemented in 1983. The programmes included water quality monitoring, river flow and sediment monitoring, surveillance of aquatic biological communities and a health and nutrition survey of the local people. These original programmes have continued, and additional programmes of work have been developed and revised to reflect changing operations and the need to focus investigations on specific areas and issues of concern. In April 1990, following the establishment by the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) of environmental management criteria for the Fly River system, compliance monitoring programs were introduced. Details of the compliance and additional monitoring programmes undertaken by OTML throughout the Ok Tedi and Fly catchments, including programmes of investigation in the Fly River estuary, Gulf of Papua and Torres Strait, are presented.

In late 1989, first-pass reconnaissance exploration delineated a 4km x 6km geochem- ically anomalous area centred 10km WNW of Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands Province at 6¦13'S and 145047'E. The area, named the Basangka prospect, lies between 2 200 and 2 400m asl. Interest in the area was prompted by a 14ppm Au assay of a silica-pyrite breccia float sample taken near Henkai village. The prospect was defined after several acid-leached silica- pyrite breccia and comb textured quartz float samples returned assays above lppm Au and relatively high Ag. Very encouraging and anomalous Au values were obtained from panned concentrates, despite the absence of visible Au colours. Several pan concentrates returned greater than 1mg Au and it is believed that the Au occurs as inclusions within iron oxides which were originally pyrite. In this early stage of prospect exploration, any Au value above 0.lppm in- 150# fraction stream sediments is treated as anomalous. Rock chips, panned concentrates and -150# fraction geochemistry all vividly define the areas of interest at Basangka.

Fin I As far as continuous casting plant concepts are concerned, this specifically requires an optimal adaptation and flexible operation when converting liquid steel into a directly processable product without any in-between treatment. Continuous casters need to fully satisfy the requirements of both the upstream steelmaking facilities as well as the downstream rolling facilities.

This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

A Simulation Study on Two-Stage Grinding with High-Pressure Roller Mills By the application of high-pressure roller mill (HPRM) in the field of mineral processing, computer simulation can be used to predict overall performance of a grinding circuit based on data obtained from HPRM comminution test in pilot scale or industrial scale. Using the model developed by Klymowsky and Liu for HPRM comminution and an extended Plitt's model for classification, steady-state of a closed circuit grinding can be calculated by means of a virtual locked-cycle-test conducted on computer. This paper presents the result of a simulation study on two-stage grinding with HPRM as the comminution device. The emphasis is put on the influences of circuit-configuration and way of recirculating classifier's coarse-product on the overall circuit performance. The results show that two-stage grinding with HPRM has its merit and flexibility in meeting demands of various grinding tasks in mineral processing.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. A Good Product Range - So What! While in terms of water, waste management and environment protectrion, the Gippsland Basin may appear to have a good product range, what does this really mean? What it means is that, like any product range, the virtues of the product range must be sold and accepted by a majority of the public. The social, economic and environmental benefits of any enterprise using these products must be sold and accepted by the regional population. Many a budding entrepreneur has failed because he assumed that the public would accept his product, so good did it appear to be! However, we know that such an assumption must be avoided and that a great deal of time and effort needs to be invested in promoting and gaining acceptance of a product to ensure a long term and viable market.

Mineral formations, accumulated during technogenic activities greatly influence an economic and ecological situation in the Kola North. On the one hand, the dumps from extraction of mineral resources, tailing ponds of beneficating plants, ash dumps, wastes of metallurgical and mechanical engineering productions destroy the regionÆs environment and require taking certain measures and costs to bury or protect from weathering, oxidation, etc. On the other hand, technogenic mineral formations contain a lot of valuable scarce components. The amount of solid wastes increases annually, causing damage to ecology and economy. Researches conducted in recent years showed a possibility and economic expediency of comprehensive processing of wastes from different enterprises in Murmansk region and their use for production of new competitive commodity output, possessing high consumer properties. Thus, involving mineral wastes from Khibiny apatite deposits into hydrometallurgical industrial processing provides the basis for setting up a large beneficating-metallurgical complex. In this case ores and wastes from other deposits on the Kola Peninsula, containing titanium, rare, rare-earth and other valuable elements, may be involved into processing. Establishing such a complex will allow to organise a deep processing of natural resources, utilise some production wastes, improve ecological security and supply production with competitive output. Expanding the complex implies not only involving new mineral raw material into processing, but mainly deepening raw material processing, maximum utilisation of local natural resources and obtaining a wider variety of prime products.

The Reefton Goldfield has produced 67 t of gold from mesothermal vein gold deposits in metasedimentary rocks of the Greenland Group (Cambrian-Ordovician). The Globe-Progress deposit contributed 13.2 t (418,000 oz) of this total, predominantly from quartz veins. Recently a resource of 14 Mt at 1.96 g/t Au (27.5 t or 882,300 oz of contained gold) has been delineated at Globe-Progress in quartz vein remnants and disseminated within adjacent sedimentary rock, much of which has been locally brecciated. The breccias consist of quartz vein and sedimentary wall rock fragments set in a matrix of clay ærock flourÆ and sulphide (arsenopyrite plus minor pyrite and stibnite). Gold, closely associated with sulphide, is disseminated within the breccia. Disseminated gold also occurs in massive siltstone and sandstone adjacent to the quartz veins and breccias. Exploration drilling at Globe-Pogress, and several other Reefton prospects (e.g. Capleston, Merrijigs, Big River and Alexander River), has intersected zones of disseminated arsenopyrite carrying up to 20 g/t more gold. These mineralised sediments commonly have little or no megascopic quartz and or carbonate veining. There is little visible indication of former primary or secondary permeability for the passage of hydrothermal fluid and deposition of gold. However, porosity and permeability were formerly present in inter-granular pore spaces and microveinlets now filled with quartz, carbonate and K-mica. The Fosterville gold deposit in Victoria bears many similarities to the Globe-Progress deposit at Reefton, in terms of age, host rocks, hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation style. Many ofthe disseminated deposits in Nova Scotia, including deposits at North Brookfield and Moose River (Touquoy Zone), have similar characteristics to the Reefton disseminated mineralisation, but commonly have abundant pyrrhotite and some deposits have disseminated metal alloy grains of complex metallurgy.

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days. Magnetite cenospheres 40-270 I/m in diameter have been found during the combustion of pyrite concentrate.Micrographs of the surface and internal structures are presented together with comment on the mechanism of forrnation.The similarity to cenospheres found during the combustion of pulverized fuel was noted and speculation raised to their contribution to the dust and fume load in flash smelters.

Australia is now the world's second largest exporter and coal is now the nation's largest single export earner.Despite this very significant growth, Australia's competitive position is in jeopardy.
