During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the potential for metal removal and recovery from river bed tailings by ferric chloride leaching. The lead, zinc, silver and other metals in the river bed occur due to the old method of dumping mill tailings into rivers. This was practiced prior to the introduction of tailings impoundments. The effects of the leaching method, leaching time, pulp density, ferric chloride concentration, and leaching temperature on the rates and recoveries of lead, zinc and silver were studied. The effects of pulp density and leaching temperature were significant on the extraction rates of lead, zinc and silver. The lead content in the leached tailing was reduced to 0.023 percent, when using an 353O K leaching temperature and 0.384 g of FeC13/1 g of sample.

Surface mining in arctic regions is characterized by many unique problems. Continuous and discontinuous permafrost (perennially frozen ground) occurs in most of the arctic and subarctic areas. Permafrost presents special problems of slope stability. Stability of permafrost depends on its temperature, moisture content, and material type. Permafrost slope fails due to solifluction, disturbance of ice-rich slopes, and liquefaction. Drilling and blasting of frozen ground present special problems. Depending on their degree of saturation with water, freezing soils and rocks have a number of important characteristics that affect blasting efficiency. Metals used in mining equipment and mining structures require special selection. At low temperatures, many steels lose most of their normal ductility and toughness (resistance to brittle fracture). This paper discusses engineering solutions to unique problems of arctic mining.

One of the Swiss transalpine highways includes two remarkable tunnels: the 16.3 km long Gotthard Road Tunnel and the 9.3 km long twin tube Seelisberg Tunnel, both presently under construction. Large diameter shafts up to 900 m long are required for ventilation. Excavation techniques for rock formations ranging from loose sedimentary rock to granite and very hard siliceous limestone were carefully evaluated. The methods finally applied include excavation of shafts in hard rock, conventional drilling and blasting, excavation by ripper-tooth excavator ("Big John") in marlstone, shield protected heading in loose material and soft rock, and tunnel and shaft lining, both by poured concrete and by prefabricated elements. A critical review of the success of these methods can now be made after a five year construction period.

With the construction management team established and a full funding agreement secured the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) now has the manpower and the financial resources to continue Metrorail construction into the 1990's. This paper describes WMATA's new role as construction manager after the transition from Bechtel Associates and gaining the full funding agreement with the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) and regional governments to complete 84.7 Metrorail miles (136km). The authors review the most recent station and line tunneling projects. WMATA's contractors have employed the state of the art soft ground and hard rock tunneling equipment and methods - an earth pressure balance TBM, a closed face TBM, and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). In final, the paper previews future underground work to be let under the funding agreement.

Dexter pit lake, within the townsite of Tuscarora, Nevada, has been in existence since 1990 and provides a natural laboratory for the study of cycles of trace elements associated with ore deposits (e.g. As, Cu, Pb, and Se). Our goal in this study is to develop and calibrate methods of geochemical modeling that may be applied to estimating the concentrations and fluxes of trace elements in pit lake systems. Our initial modeling work considers limnology, hydrology, wall rock mineralogy and geochemistry, benthic fluxes, and colloid composition. Results from our work may be useful in evaluating water quality in the arid West.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The monitoring system has been one of the key to the success of the project.The excavation of tunnels under the water table, with a hydraulic head of over 10 m in not homogeneous soils having different mechanical properties and permeability and below existing sensitive structures, involves special ground freezing sequences and methods, as well as peculiar drilling systems and operations, such as TDDT (Trevi Directional Drilling Technology).THE NEW “C” LINE OF ROME’S METROThe world’s most complex and extraordinary Metro System is currently being built in the heart of Rome. TRANSPORTATION TUNNELING The use of tunnels for transportation, namely rapid rail transit systems and highways is on the increase. How much that increase might be through the 1980's is the question that is discussed in this paper. In 1975, there were 218 route miles of subway tunnels for rapid rail transit and 154 lane-miles of highway tunnel. From the viewpoint of many transportation planners and designers, the tunnel is one of the tools which may be used to by-pass many types of obstacles: a mountain, a body of water, or a Central Business District (CBD). Therefore, the transportation tunnel is a rural as well as an urban solution with major emphasis on the latter because of the current transportation needs of our cities. In the case of rural locations, tunnels are usually constructed through mountains in order to eliminate miles of steep grades and dangerous curves, such as the Eisenhower Tunnel which cuts through the Continental Divide in Colorado along 1-70 and saves 10 miles and 40 minutes of driving time. Tunnels also provide an excellent transportation link across bodies of water in order not to interfere with shipping lanes. The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel and Bay Tubes of the BART system are excellent examples of this type of tunnel.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. INTRODUCTION Phase I of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project, known as MOS-1 (Minimum Operable Segment-1), is the first phase of the 27 km± (17 mi) subway starter line. MOS-1 is currently under construction and involves approximately 6.4 km (4.4 mi) of subway, five stations, yards and shops routed through the downtown area of Los Angeles. The project will form the initial heavy rail backbone of a more extensive light and heavy rail transit system planned for the greater Los Angeles area in the future. Construction Contract A-171 is one of 4 tunnel contracts within MOS-1 and involves construction of twin tunnels running from the downtown metropolitan area west to MacArthur Park. The heavily populated and developed downtown area, potentially gassy ground conditions, and the possibility of undocumented abandoned oil wells in seismically active southern California made the design and construction of Contract A-171 a uniquely interesting project. This paper summarizes the construction history to date (December, 1988) including design geotechnical considerations, tunnel support design, as-built geologic conditions, shield tunneling performance through soft ground, and ground response. Flotation chemists have long sought to unravel the mechanisms of carboxylate collector adsorption by semi-soluble salt minerals. In particular, the adsorption density of adsorbed carboxylates, adsorption kinetics, speciation (chemisorbed, physisorbed), orientation, and conformation are of interest. Given the importance of these phenomena in establishing the hydrophobic state at a mineral surface, in-situ surface spectroscopy studies certainly are justified. Such measurements traditionally have been difficult to perform. However, beginning in the late 1980s, a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic technique was developed that has allowed for the acquisition of a wealth of detailed information concerning carboxyiate adsorption in semi-soluble salt flotation systems. The technique, internal rejection spectroscopy using single-crystal internal reflection elements, is reviewed, as it applies to semi-soluble salt flotation systems.

A prototype expert advisor was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to systematically offer advice on the control of a Florida phosphate operation. The PC based system receives input from remote sensors for circuit parameters such as feed rate, reagent addition, and pH and from operator entered information such as the quality of the concentrate and tailings in each of the coarse, fine, and amine flotation circuits. The computer evaluates the information using rules obtained from industry representatives and Bureau flotation experts. Recommended actions and questions are displayed to quickly guide the operator to a problem within the flotation circuit and suggest a solution. This process control system could provide more uniformity among the flotation operators and also serve as a trainer for new operators. In addition, it represents a step toward fully automated systems for phosphate flotation.

This paper describes the formulation of mine ventilation network optimization as a standard nonlinear programming problem and the solution of the problem using the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. In general, the GRG method is regarded as one of the most effective and efficient methods for solving large-scale nonlinear programming problems. The variables considered in the network optimization include air quantity, regulator pressure loss, and fan pressure for each branch. Each of the variables is constrained by lower and upper bounds. This facilitates proper assignments of ventilation requirements and provides a great flexibility to include various situations encountered in mine ventilation. The objective of the network optimization is to minimize the overall air power consumed by or supplied to the network; whereas the constraints are, in addition to the variable bounds, the two fundamental network laws: Kirchhoffs voltage law and Kirchhoffs current law. A computer program has been developed based on the GRG method for the network optimization. An example of network with 18 branches, 8 regulators and 3 fans is included for illustration.

El Abra has the world's largest leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning facility, The crushing plant capacity is 120,000 metric tonnes per day and the cathode production capacity is 225,000 metric tonnes per year. The El Abra mine and plant are located in the Province of El Loa, in Region I1 of Chile, 55 km. north of the city of Calama. The ore deposit outcrops on the southern slope of Cerro Pajonal at an altitude of 3,900 to 4,100 meters above sea level. The processing plant and camp facilities are located at a lower 3,300 meter elevation on an alluvial slope, 15 km southeast of the deposit. The operating company, Sociedad Contractual Minera El Abra, is 51% owned by Cyprus Arnax Minerals Company through the Cyprus Climax Metals Company subsidiary and 49% owned by Corporaci6n Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco). The present paper describes the ore reserves, mine operations, crushing, leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning and infrastructure facilities.

The Nordhalde is a waste rock pile resulting from uranium mining near Ronneburg, Germany. The pile contains over 27 million m3 of waste rock. Typical seepage water has a pH of 2.7 and a sulfate concentration of 10,000 mg/L. Geochemical investigations of the Nordhalde from 1993 to 1996 included drillholes, test pits, ABA and metals analyses, column tests, and a detailed review of the construction history of the pile. In 1996, eight drillholes were instrumented for monitoring oxygen and temperature. Monitoring continued for a fill year. Hourly temperature and pressure readings were taken by automated data recorder. Oxygen concentrations were measured three times per week, and periodic gas samples were obtained for complete analysis. The resulting data set is believed to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind. Effects noted elsewhere, such as thermal convection, are evident. However, unlike other data in the literature, the NordhaIde data shows a strong seasonal effect, with convection dominating oxygen transport only in the winter months. Analysis of the data allowed the amount of contaminants associated with ongoing and historical oxidation to be compared, and results were used to assess the potential effectiveness of proposed remediation measures.

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.
