Gua supergene enriched iron ore deposit from Jharkhand, India has been geostatistically modeled. Population modeling shows a negatively skewed 3-parameter log-normal fit for Fe and positively skewed 3-parameter log-normal fit for Al2O3 and SO2. Semi-variographic studies for Fe indicate spherical function fit using point kriging cross-validation technique with Co=4.06(%)2, C5.11 (%)2, Co+C=9.1 7(%)2 and 'a'=348m. Kriging with 50mx50mx 10m block size at 740mRL led to a global mean kriged estimate of 61.98% and kriging variance of 4.04(%)2 for Fe with central 90% geostatistical confidence limits at 61.39% and 62.24% for that level. This led to an ore inventory at 740mRL as 7.29 million tonnes of ore.

The Coal supply and demand review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. In 1991, the US coal industry produced 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal, according to preliminary data compiled by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This amount was 32 Mt (35 million st) less than the record 933.5 Mt (1 billion st) produced in 1990. Most of the decrease in coal production occurred east of the Mississippi River. The substantial stock buildup that stimulated production in 1990 was not repeated in 1991. In addition, coal consumption by electric utilities and coke plants dropped by about 1.8 Mt and 4.5 Mt (2 million and 5 million st), respectively. Moreover, a higher level of coal exports failed to bolster the 1991 production. Production Surface mines accounted for about 59% of the 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal produced in 1991. Underground mines produced for 41%. More than one-fourth of the total coal output was from federal and Indian coal leases. Production of all ranks of coal, except subbituminous, declined in 1991. Bituminous coal is produced mainly in the East. It totaled an estimated 590 Mt (651 million st), a 6% decrease. Production of subbituminous coal, mostly in the West, rose 3% to a record 228 Mt (252 million st). Lignite output was from Texas and North Dakota. It decreased by 1 % to 79 Mt (87 million st). Anthracite production, all from eastern Pennsylvania, fell by 17% to 2.7 Mt (3 million st).

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. On April 3, 1981, Harrison Western Corporation was awarded a contract by Amax Alloy - A Division of Amax Inc., to sink the Henderson #5 ventilation shaft. The project was located on the Henderson Mine site 88 kilometers west of Denver near the town of Empire, Colorado (Figure I). The Henderson No. 5 Shaft, located in an Alpine environment at an elevation of 3145 meters, was a 9.8 meter diameter concrete lined shaft with a total depth of 793 meters. Work started and continued with Harrison Western employees until January 15, 1982. At that time, Amax made the decision to continue the shaft-sinking with their own labor, and with Harrison Western providing supervision under a management service contract. Shaft sinking continued under this arrangement to October 1, 1982, at which time Amax put the Henderson No. 5 project on standby status until further notice.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the US Department of Energy. The repository is located at a depth of 655 min the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation. The exhaust air from the facility is independently monitored by the Environmental Evaluation Group to verify compliance with regulatory release limits for radioactive materials. A May 1995 video inspection of the exhaust shaft identified fluid migration into the uppermost 25 m of the shaft. Since then, water has been observed flowing in from cracks in the shaft lining between 16and 25 m below surface level at an estimated rate of between 5 and15 m3/d. This water inflow has not only negatively impacted the equipment in the shaft, associated duct-work and monitoring equipment located at the top of the shaft, but also challenged efforts to verify compliance at the WIPP. This paper provides an analysis of these effects.

The dissociation (ionisation) constant of hydrogen cyanide, pKa(HCN), has been measured by high precision glass electrode potentiometric titrations in saline solutions containing up to 5 mol/L sodium chloride. The dissociation constant of water that is necessary for the calculation of pKa(HCN) has also been measured. In saline solution, and in contrast to literature values, pKa(HCN) changes considerably at both high and low ionic strengths as a result of changes in activity coefficients. In addition an equation is presented, using literature data, that describes the variation of pKa(HCN) with temperature up to 150°C. The significance of the changes in pKa(HCN) for optimising the pH of alkaline cyanide gold recovery streams is briefly discussed.

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health integrated the results of studies from a seismic tomographic survey, a finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. The key findings were that (1) the seismic tomograms showed that seismic velocities in rock adjacent to mine openings were low, (2) a difference tomogram in which in situ stresses on the east and west sides of the slot were compared showed that velocities increased west of the slot but decreased east of the slot, (3) geologic features (rock types and a fault) identified through geologic mapping were recognizable in the seismic tomograms, (4) ultrasonic velocity measurements on the rock cores agreed with seismic velocity measurements in the tomograms, and (5) results from a finite-difference analysis compared well to the seismic tomograms west of the slot but not east of the slot. The significance of this research is that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars.

With the opening of the Tilden mine near Ishpeming, MI, a new era in iron ore beneficiation was begun. A description of a U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation is summarized to illustrate the selective flocculation-deslime-flotation process developed by the Bureau and used at the Tilden concentrator, which is also briefly described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation-cationic flotation of an oxidized taconite from the Mesabi range are discussed. A water reclamation system using lime and a cationic flocculant was applied to reclaim the effluents from a 900-pound-per-hour flotation pilot plant. About 80 percent of water requirements were recovered, and the calcium content of the reclaimed water was found to be more important than clarity in influencing the selective flocculation and flotation processes. Although reclaimed waters with about 10 ppm calcium registered turbidities of approximately 5,000 ppm SiO2 equivalents, the concentrates produced using these waters contained 64 percent Fe and =5.0 percent SiO2 and had accompanying iron recoveries of 75 percent. Lower grade concentrates resulted from using reclaimed water with higher calcium contents and lower turbidities.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). "Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

As part of a study aimed at understanding the hydrology of in situ leach mining (ISLM), the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation and the University of Arizona, is investigating dynamic transmissivity conditions during ISLM of a copper oxide ore deposit. Spatial and temporal variations in ore zone transmissivity during two years of ISLM operations at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine are evaluated during sixteen intervals of steady-state injection and recovery well operation. Direct inversion of an analytical hydrologic model is used to obtain estimates of transmissivity at 58 well locations during these intervals. Univariate statistical and geostatistical methods are used to describe the temporal and/or spatial relationships that exist between transmissivity and other ISLM parameters, including average well injection pressure, average sulfuric acid concentration in leach solution, and the relative configuration of injection and recovery wells. Average transmissivity during the sixteen steady-state time intervals varies between 6.00 x 10-6 m2/min. (6.46 x 10-5 ft2/min.) and 3.61 x 10-8 m2/ min. (3.89 x 10-7 ft2/min.). A trend toward decreas¬ing transmissivity is evident during two year of ISLM operations. This decreasing trend is found to correlate with a decreasing sulfuric acid concentration in injected leach solution, and suggests increasing geochemical precipitation within the deposit. Geostatistical analyses reveal a dynamic and anisotropic transmissivity structure within the target ore zone, that is dependent upon spatial and temporal changes in injection pressure and well configuration.

INTRODUCTION Pyrite responds to the flotation reagents normally used in sulfide flotation systems. For example, it is well known that xanthates are good collectors for pyrite, and cyanide, sulfide and hydroxides are depressants. The particular response of pyrite to these and other reagents is used to advantage in several areas. By careful control of depressant and collector additions, pyrite can be separated from other sulfides by flotation. This is of obvious importance in base metal sulfide flotation where pyrite depression is often required to produce a marketable grade concentrate. Flotation of pyrite has long been employed in gold ore processing, and it appears that pyrite flotation from coal may become important in the future (1). It is probably a direct consequence of this relative ease of separation, plus the low economic value of pyrite, that detailed investigations on the chemistry of its flotation and depression are relatively limited. Gaudin (2,3,4) and others, in the mid-1950's published data on the flotation of pyrite, but detailed or consistent mechanisms were lacking. In 1955, Sutherland and Wark's book (5) was published, in which a large amount of empirical information, especially earlier work of Wark and Cox, was presented. More recently, in 1968, significant contributions have been made by Fuerstenau et al. (6,7) and Majima and Takeda (El. These papers introduced electrochemical explanations of the effects observed with xanthate and cyanide ions.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

Calcine is transported from the Reduction Plant at 850°C in insulated hopper cars and charged into three rectangular electric melting furnaces each equipped with three - 18.5 MVA transformers. The electrical energy is applied through six in line prebaked carbon electrodes, and slag and metal are tapped at opposite ends of the furnaces on an intermittent basis. The slag, 5000 tonnes per day, is disposed of by a pot train directly to the dump. The ferronickel, 250 tonnes per day, is tapped into 40 tonne capacity ladles in which it is refined in two ASEA-SKF ladle furnace stations. Casting is done over lip at 1520°C in a pig casting machine with stepless speed control at up to 55 tonnes per hour. The ingots are stacked into self palletizing bundles weighing about 1500 kilograms and are strapped and tagged and transported to the seaport, from which the final shipment is made to the world market. The paper describes constructional details and gives information of both normal operation and start-up and shut-down procedures. Consumption figures for refractory, electrodes, electric energy and refining additions are given and metal chemistry is given before and after refining.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. The CP-3A contract is the final segment of the MWWST’s 28.3 km (17.6 mile)pressurized water supply tunnel for the metropolitan Boston area. The 1,288 m (4,226 feet) of U-shaped tunnel alignment passed through five rock zones employing four different primary support systems. The short tunnel began in Weston, Massachusetts, at Shaft 5A in soft, completely weathered argillite, passed through a fault zone, and ended in Dedham granite. An 18-foot diameter horseshoe starter tunnel was built to accommodate a 4.94 m (16-foot 2 1 / 2 inch) diameter Robbins TBM. Heavy water inflows were anticipated and subsequently encountered during probe drilling. Pre-excavation grouting was implemented at high pressures to displace high water inflows in the starter tunnel and consolidate the fault zone. This paper will provide an overview of the tunnel construction with an emphasis on ground control, grouting and survey control.

"INTRODUCTION For several decades, the use of fibre-reinforced sprayed concrete (FRSC) has been becoming increasingly widespread, either as a replacement for or in addition to traditional reinforcements. Macro-synthetic fibres appeared on the market at the same time as metal fibres (in the 1980s), but their use has developed more recently in France, starting in the early 2000s. While their properties are attractive for underground operations, their long-term performance remains the subject of some controversy, particularly with regard to the phenomenon of creep [1-5]. Unfortunately, the many differences of protocol among the studies carried out (materials, metering, spraying equipment and test methods, etc.) mean that, in general, the results cannot be compared. Although several methods have been developed to assess the bending creep behaviour of fibre-reinforced concrete, the majority of them test notched beams resting on isostatic supports. There are currently no standardised test methods adapted to FRSC on hyperstatic supports (as is the case for FRSC used for underground support). The Asquapro association has thus developed a new test specially designed for this type of concrete. Slabs of thickness 10cm, measuring 60 x 60 cm in plan have been sprayed and tested under bending stress according to a test procedure inspired by the standardised test of energy absorption capacity (NF EN 14488-5). An experimental campaign was launched in October 2014 to study the behaviour of seven types of sprayed concrete, manufactured using the same concrete matrix: six of them were reinforced with different metal or macrosynthetic fibres and the seventh with a welded wire mesh. Fourteen slabs were sprayed for each type of concrete and also for the non-reinforced concrete with the same matrix. The types of mechanical performances measured were the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity (at seven and twenty-eight days), in addition to the creep behaviour of these seven types of concrete, placed under stress on the seventh day. This article follows on from that published in the WTC 2015 congress proceedings [6]: the programme and the test methods are briefly described here and the results available at the time of writing are presented and discussed."

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade.
