The primary purpose of the Bergius (hydrogenation of coal) and Fischer-Tropsch (hydrogenation of carbon monoxide) processes is the production of synthetic liquid fuels. This objective is of importance in insuring an adequate supply of motor fuels and lubricating oils in the United States. In the urgency of the basic research and process development work on synthetic liquid fuels, the possibilities for the production of synthetic chemicals inherent in these processes have hitherto received little attention in this country. However, the by-products, as well as the primary products, from the Bergius and Fischer-Tropsch processes are rich source materials for organic chemicals. The overhead oil from liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal, for example, contains benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, aromatic solvents, about 20 percent tar acids (largely phenol, cresols, and xylenols), and 3 percent nitrogen bases. Wax, alcohols, and acids are by--products of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In addition, techniques have been developed which make possible the production of aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, aldehydes, and other oxygenated organic compounds. These chemicals are more valuable on a unit basis than gasoline. Because of continued rapid expansion of the plastic, resin, lacquer, and solvent industries, larger amounts of many of these chemicals will be needed in the near future.

The technological and economic pattern of the U. S. mining industry has undergone a rapid and continuing change since World War II. To provide realistic up-to-date cost data and to disseminate knowledge of technical developments, the Federal Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of individual mining companies, is presenting a series of mining methods and costs reports similar to those it issued before 1939. Shaft sinking has always played an important part in mine development and [ration] and is an appropriate subject for this series of reports. Shafts [are] especially important in areas such as the Coeur d'Alene district of Idaho, where every major mine is served by one or more shafts and shaft sinking is in progress at one mine or and her almost continuously.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974 was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (D.E.I.) on research and development, laboratory; field and other engineering studies for the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included a discussion on the peculiarity of retorted shale materials to be investigated and a discussion of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. Mineral raw materials produced in California, other States, and foreign countries were purchased for consumption in quantities valued at over $60 million at 800 of the 1,200 chemical plants operating in California in 1960, according to questionnaires completed by company officials. These and other data received from mineral consumers, producers, dealers, and Government agencies formed the basis for this the first of a series of reports designed to present the intricate features and relationships controlling mineral raw material supply and demand in California industries. The results of this study indicated certain changes in use patterns of minerals in chemica 1 manufacturing; a shift in requirements from metals to nonmeta ls, from inorganics to organics, from natura 1 to synthet ic materia ls , and from distant to local sources of supply.

This report covers the calendar year 1953 and has been prepared and submitted in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 106(a) and Sec. 212(c) of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U.S.C. Secs. 451-483). During this first full calendar year of operations under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the coal-mining industry of the United States attained the best injury records in its history - improving the former best records (made in 1952) by 91 fatal and 10,020 nonfatal injuries. Whereas, the mandatory provisions of the act were intended and designed to prevent major mine disasters, apparently the effects have reached beyond the scope thereof in reducing mine accidents generally.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars on accident prevention at metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: 1. Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

When a flat-lying mineral deposit such as a coal seam is mined, some coal is left to separate the roof and floor so that miners and machines can safely mine the seam. The mineral left is in the form of mine pillars. If too much is taken, support problems and unsafe working conditions result. If too little is taken, the mining operation will be unable to compete economically with other mines. Therefore, one must select pillars of the optimal size to maximize mining recovery and minimize risk to miners and equipment. Later, if the pillar support is no longer needed and the surface can be allowed to subside the thickness of the coal seam, then the pillar support can be removed to increase mining recovery, and initial pillar size is not as critical. Only a small part of the information available on pillar design can be presented here. The purpose of this report is to summarize some of the work done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others on pillar design, which is reported in the literature from 1833 to the present, and present rock mechanics test results that aid in understanding mine pillar behavior. The variable names used are those of the authors cited. This results in multiple use of some variable names.

To identify and characterize potential domestic chromium resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated podifom chromite deposits along the Border Ranges Fault in southern Alaska. Part 1 of this two-part report describes an extensive field investigation and preliminary resource evaluation studies by the Bureau's Alaska Field Operations Center. This paper, part 2, describes the mineralogy of 38 samples that were collected from low-grade deposits in the Chugach Mountains, on the Kenai Peninsula, and on Kodiak Island, and presents the results of laboratory batch beneficiation tests designed to concentrate the chromite. The samples are peridotites and chromites that consist primarily of variable amounts of chromite, olivine, and serpentine. They were beneficiated by a sequence of grinding, sizing, and gravity concentration operations. Twenty-four high-chromium or marginal high-chromium chromite concentrates, six high-iron or marginal high-iron chromite concentrates, and five submarginal concentrates were produced with chromium recoveries that ranged from 37 to 95 pct. Three very low-grade samples were not beneficiated. These results indicate that several of the de- posits may be significant chromium resources, Potential precious metals association with the chromite was also investigated. Analysis of these samples indicates that the chromite deposits are not good platinum sources.

This report describes the design, development and manufacture of production stoper drills and results of their field tests, it is shown that underground stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using these pneumatic drills. The design concept of these drills is a radical departure from the standard valved rifle bar type drill machine design to a drill featuring a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and a shroud tube. Six drills were manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.

This report presents the results of tests conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the transport characteristics of highly concentrated paste backfill mixes made from dewatered total mine tailings. The slurry concentrations of the mixes were all above 78 pct by weight with slumps ranging from 6.4 to 16.5 cm (2.5 to 6.5 in). Laboratory material property tests and full-scale pumping tests were conducted using pipe diameters of 102, 128, and 154 mm (4, 5, and 6 in) and a positive-displacement pump. The results indicated that the tested backfill mixes can be successfully transported as a stiff paste and identified the influence of and the interaction among the various mix and system variables.

The Bureau of Mines is sponsoring a variety of long-term, high-risk research to advance state-of-the-art technology in U.S. underground coal mining. This report reviews the status of many Bureau projects that support fundamental underground coal mining operations; the project areas include cutting coal from the solid (extraction), hauling coal from the face (transport), and activities that sustain daily operations (logistics). Innovative equipment and technology have been developed, with these major objectives: to significantly improve coal mine productivity, to further advance coal recovery and personal safety within the mining industry, and to reduce the time needed to develop longwall panels. The majority of the prototype equipment covered in this report either has undergone or will undergo comprehensive evaluation at Bureau surface test facilities so that performance and reliability can be improved before the equipment is tested and evaluated in a working section underground.

Among the more important factors involved in the use of high explosives in blasting operations is the means employed to bring about the detonation of the charge. When flame is applied to high explosives many of them may burn if not confined; but all of them when burning under certain conditions of confinement may detonate. Detonation may also be effected by mechanical means, such as frictional impact caused by a blow or by rubbing between surfaces. By this means, however, the full effect of the explosive charge may not be developed, so that a partial detonation, often accompanied by the burning of the explosive, results. When nitroglycerin was first used it was fired by the application of flame, but considerable difficulty was experienced in exploding it with certainty and in obtaining uniform resl'llts. In 1864 Allred Noble, a Swedish engineer, discovered that nitroglycerin could be surely and completely detonated by exploding in contact with it a small quantity of an initiatory explosive. Mercury fulminate was the substance then found capable of producing the best results There are many other fulminates and other substances that will produce complete detonation of commercial" high" explosives, but detonators or electric detonators containing mercury fulminate as the characteristic ingredient are still almost exclusively used in this country. The term" detonator" is used in the publications of the Bureau of Mines to designate what the miner calls a "blasting cap "-a copper capsule containing a small quantity of some detonating compound that is ignited by a fuse. The term" electric detonator" is applied to a blasting cap that is similar except for being ignited by means of a small wire which is heated to incandescence or fused by the passage of an electric current. One of the conditions prescribed by the Bureau of Mines for a permissible explosive a is that it shall be :fired by a detonator, or preferably an electric detonator, having a charge equivalent to that of the standard detonator used at the Pittsburgh testing station. A further requirement is that this charge shall consist by weight of 90 parts of mercury fulminate and 10 parts of potassium chlorate (or their equivalents). At the request of a manufacturer of permissible explosives, an investigation was undertaken by the bureau to determine the relative strength of detonators and electric detonators having different compositions. The tests of electric detonators herein reported were conducted by H. F. Braddock, junior chemist; J. W. Koster, J. E. Tiffany, junior mining engineers; and A. S. Crossfield, junior explosives chemist, at the Pittsburgh testing station of the bureau. Similar tests of detonators were not conducted because it was believed that the results would not show sufficient variation to warrant such tests. It is hoped that the conclusions drawn from the tests made will be of service to those using explosives by enabling them to select the grade of detonator or electric detonator that will insure the most effective results. The conclusions are given in this bulletin, which is published by the Bureau of Mines as one of a series of publications dealing with the testing of explosives and the precautions that should be taken to increase safety and efficiency in the use of explosives in mining operations. The results of tho experiments described in this bulletin show that the average percentage of failures of explosives to detonate was increased more than 20 per cent when the lower grades of electric detonators were used instead of No. 6 electric detonators, and was increased more than 50 per cent when these lower grades were used instead of No. 8 electric detonators. It is noteworthy, however, that when sensitive explosives, such as 40 per cent strength ammonia dynamite (p. 33), were tested under conditions ideal for detonation, the same energy was developed irrespective of the electric detonator used. When tests were made with a less sensitive explosive, such as a 40 per cent strength ammonia dynamite containing nitrosubstitution compounds (p. 32), the energy developed increased with the grade of the electric detonator used. For example, the average efficiency of four different explosives was increased 10.4 per cent when a No.6 electric detonator was used instead of a No.4 electric detonator, and 14.9 per cent when aN 0.8 electric detonator was used (see tabulation onp.45). The results of the tests emphasize the importance of using explosives in a fresh condition, but as fresh explosives can not always be had in mining work, strong detonators should be used in order to offset any deterioration of explosives from age.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined a low-temperature tar obtained from a small-scale commercial unit for carbonizing North Dakota lignite for products that might be important to the economic processing of the tar. Tie tar may be divided into three distinct parts: (1) Tar acids, 45 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume percent; and (3) neutral compounds, 54 volume-percent. It has a boiling range of approximately 150° to 380° C. (the decomposition temperature) and yields 18 weight-percent as hard pitch. The tar distillate up to 365° C. may be separated as: (1) Tar acids, 48 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume-percent; and (3) hydrocarbons, 51 volume-percent. The tar-acid distillate, boiling to approximately 265° C., was characterized in some detail; the neutral fractions and the tar bases were less thoroughly examined. In general, as might be expected of a primary low-temperature tar, the lower boiling fractions are less in quantity compared with the usual high-temperature tar. The homologous series of each major class appears to be rather complete, although some components are present in very small amounts. The tar is quite unstable thermally, and might be more conveniently processed by extraction methods rather than by distillation procedures. The neutral fraction of the tar is highly aromatic, and might be considered as base stock for the production of liquid fuels.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of its designated duty of investigating the causes of mine accidents, is conducting at its experiment station in Pittsburgh, Pa., a study of mine gases. Some of the work already done in connection with this study is outlined below. A large number of mine-gas samples have been collected under normal conditions in returns and in splits, and at other points in the ventilating current, also at the face, in the goave or gob, in unventilated places, and wherever the air was still. Samples have also been obtained under abnormal conditions, as after explosions and while mine fires were in progress, or from sealed areas behind stoppings and darns where the air had been stagnant for some time. Chemical changes in the composition of mine atmospheres during mine fires have been studied," and conditions peculiar to certain mines have been investigated. The question of the effect of a change in atmospheric pressure on the escape of gas (methane) in coal mines has been studied. Explosives have been fired in both coal and metal mines, and samples of resulting gases have been collected to ascertain the degree to which these gases vitiate the air. A series of samples in mines where gasoline locomotives were being used have been examined in order to ascertain the degree to which the exhaust gases from such locomotives foul the mine air. Experiments have also been performed in regard to the relative effect of carbon monoxide b upon men and small animals. A preliminary report relating to the inflammable gases in mine air has been published. Full reports of the results of the investigations outlined above will be published as soon as all the necessary data have been gathered. The first part of this report deals with the methods used by the bureau in the collection and examination of the various mine gases; the latter part discusses the bureau's methods of sampling and examining natural gas.
