"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original shell top hat liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits.The original liners were chrome-moly steel Norsteel with rubber grates and rubber-lined pulp lifters. The design was based on experiences of other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Liner design modifications were made in an iterative fashion after observing the wear rate profile of the liners; over ten liner sets were implemented. Shell liner design improvements were supported by a design of experiments approach in conjunction with discrete element method (DEM) charge motion simulations. Design optimization took into account lining costs and impacts on operating performance. The team approach to the liner design improvements process is described with emphasis on the application of the design of experiments. The liner wear history and mill operating performance are presented."

In today?s evolving and globalized world, mining companies are being pressured to move beyond compliance towards long-term sustainability and sustainable development. Companies are expected to ?engage? communities without a clear understanding of ?how? to do this or to what end. This move, away from compliance, develops more of a focus on ?Community? Social Responsibility and sustainability. This shift leads to the development of world-class projects that provide sustainable development for people, reduce the incidence of costly delays, and promote good global citizenship for companies. The process of ?engaging? communities in mining project design and development leads to a stronger license to operate, and a reduction in social and political risk. To create this mutually beneficial relationship between communities and companies, communities must be ?engaged? in the project development and risk assessment processes as early as possible, preferably during the exploration or the concept phases. How to create this ?engagement? and manage this risk will be discussed.

The stability of paste fill bulkheads forms an integral part of a successful paste fill system. Bulkheads are constructed at the draw points of open stopes to contain paste fill while the initial pour cures and forms a consolidated plug. Mobilization of uncured paste fill as a result of a bulkhead failure can lead to significant consequences, including endangering the safety of personnel, property damage and production losses and delays. The loading conditions in the paste fill and the resultant lateral loads on the bulkheads are complex and are dependent on many factors. This paper presents a case study of several paste fill bulkhead failures; the results of an in-situ pressure monitoring program to ascertain the pressure loads, and the subsequent paste fill bulkhead evaluation.

In recent years the global mining industry has addressed its social and environmental responsibilities and numerous factors have contributed to this. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important part of mining company strategy for practical implementation of the goals of sustainability, transparency, accountablity and good relationships with stakeholders:- investors, employees and communities. A key stakeholder for all mining companies is the local community which is affected by the mining operations. Companies must identify the emerging social and environmental trends, study the interests and concerns of various communities, address their needs and maintain a positive relationship. The CSR programmes of Czech coal mining companies are focused on surrounding community initiatives and sustainable responsible business. Mining in the Czech Republic is subject to strict rules and regulations and supervised by the State Mining Authority. Mining projects undergo rigorous approval procedures which encompass all operational measures at the different planning levels ? such as public participation in the authorisation process for mining projects, the application of the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive, environmental sustainability programmes, innovative solutions and flexible options offered by the mining company. One very important part is the preparation of the mining-technology preconditions and developing the integrated planning process in which all socially and politically relevant subjects in the mining operation surroundings are included. In an in-depth debate, all stakeholders may jointly develop the concept, in accordance with democratic principles. The optimally conducted dialogue process needs broad communication bases, including setting up theme-related joint taskforces, together with good moderation and the highly qualified support of technical experts. Using a case study of Severoceske doly a.s. Chomutov (SD Company) and the Czech Coal Group ? Czech leaders in the extraction of brown coal, this paper aims to examine the community development approaches and the CSR effectiveness of large scale mining companies. This paper brings a review of CSR and other such voluntary initiatives in the mining industry's proactive steps to contribute to societal well-being in a meaningful way. Key studies are provided by the projects ? Region with Better Perspective?, ?Stop Dust for Healthy Brezno Village?, ?Clever Heads for the North? and ?Coal Safari?. CSR issues are managed throughout all stages of the mine operation and beyond, long after the mine closes (e.g. post-closure programmes of new landscape, alternatives for reclamation including generation of lakes in former surface mines, conceptualization of industrial heritage). Communities need to be given the opportunity to help themselves through participation in CSR projects rather than being recipients of financial gifts from the company. A fair balancing of interests is the basis of any successful cooperation.

The construction of refineries and gas conservation plants in the general Edmonton area in the early 1950's made available large quantities of by-product liquified petroleum gases (LPG). These gases, together with discovery of increasing reserves of natural gas in the Edmonton area, provided Canadian Chemical Company with two of the necessities for petrochemical production, namely, available and reasonably priced raw materials and fuel. This paper outlines the development of the $83 million Edmonton plant from its origin, together with a brief description of the processes and some of the interesting features involved. Several economic aspects of the petrochemical industry are high-lighted including its importance to the local community and the province. The paper reviews the relationship between the oil and gas industry and petrochemical manufacturing and indicates some of the factors that may affect the future growth of the petro-chemical industry in Wes tern Canada.

"Platinum-group minerals (PGM) typically occur in such low concentrations that quantitative mineralogical evaluation is difficult or impossible. The FEI MLA system used by Vale Base Metals Technology Development has been successfully employed to produce large PGM data sets that are statistically robust. The MLA Sparse Phase Liberation mapping routine produces false colored images that accurately document mineral textures, including intergrowths between various platinum group minerals and between PGMs and other tellurides and sulfides. MLA PGM search results can be used in conjunction with mineral chemistry to calculate platinumgroup element distribution to minerals and the MLA PGM images can be used to produce model grade-recovery curves.INTRODUCTIONThe platinum-group minerals (PGM) found in Sudbury area deposits have been extensively catalogued and reviewed by many authors including, but not limited to: Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), Cabri and Laflamme (1984; 1976) and Cabri (1981). The PGM list currently used has 12 minerals summarized in Table 1. As noted by Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), platinum-group minerals in Sudbury are dominated by tellurides, bismuth-tellurides and arsenides, with an absence of platinum-group element (PGE) sulphides or ferro-platinum alloys such as tetraferroplatinum - PtFe."

"The paper presents the engineering design and experience gained so far with a dewatering system for an open-pit uranium mine planned at Key Lake in Northern Saskatchewan.The results of hydrogeological investigations preceding engineering exhibit an extensive unconfined overburden aquifer hydraulically connected with the underlying Athabasca Formation and basement rocks, both of relatively low hydraulic conductivity. The overburden aquifer is embedded in a bedrock trough, with the deepest depression between the planned pits. The hydrogeological data were used in a numerical dewatering model simulating groundwater flow atdifferent stages of the pit development.Based on the model results, the engineering design had to provide for different pumping rates, varying between 1.0 and 0.21 ms/sec. This problem was solved by using a double line pressure system. The design concept for the complete peripheral discharge system and the well design used for 26dewatering wells are discussed.Experience with reverse-circulation techniques applied for the construction of the dewatering wells is presented. Theoretical and practical considerations which led to the constructionof wells of different diameters are discussed.The design of the in-pit dewatering system provides for seepage ditches, horizontal drains, pit-bottom sumps and inpit dewatering wells where required."

The Mildred Lake Settling Basin (MLSB) is the largest disposal site for mature fine tailings (MFT) at the Syncrude Canada Ltd oil sands plant. Over the past years (since 1997), there has been a marked change in the consolidation behaviour of MFT in the MLSB, which is attributed to microbial activity. Methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, have become very active, and large amounts of biogas (mainly methane) have been produced. In certain regions within the MLSB, gas bubbles are released to the water surface of the tailings pond. Continued field monitoring of the MLSB has provided convincing evidence of the rapid densification process (rapid water drainage from the tailings). This phenomenon contradicts the consolidation models for MFT developed over the past 20 years. The above phenomenon has also been reported at the oil sands tailings ponds operated by Suncor Energy Ltd. in Fort McMurray. This rapid densification has caused pumping challenges in the transfer of fine tailings from the Mildred Lake Settling Basin for the creation of composite tailings. The rapid densification of the MFT may also have potential positive effects in accelerating the reclamation of the oil sands fine tailings. A field and laboratory research program is underway to study the mechanism leading to the rapid densification phenomenon. Systematic field investigations were performed to determine the distribution and characteristics of the rapidly densified MFT. Gas bubble distribution on the water surface was mapped to determine the zones of different biological activities in the pond. These field investigations provided solid ground for further experimental and theoretical research. A number of small-scale column tests were carried out to observe the gas evolution and to measure the changes of some geotechnical parameters under different microbial activity. Also, a series of gassy MFT densification tests are being conducted to study the mechanism of the rapid densification of the MFT under microbiological activity. A review and discussion of the research program is given and some preliminary research results are presented in the paper.

The Kidd operation mines roughly 10 000 tpd of copper and zinc ore from underground and employs about 700 personnel. In the late summer and fall of 1997, major movements in the proximity of the east wall of the Kidd open pit had been observed. The Kidd pit had been mined from 1965 to 1977 to depths of 260 m (850 ft), followed by subsequent mining by underground methods to current depths in excess of 1830 m (6800 ft). The No. 1 Mine (2600 Level to pit bottom) is approximately 90% extracted, with most of the remaining reserve between 2000 and 2500 levels. Although initial concerns centred on the stability of the pit walls, the potential ramifications of the movements to the underground were recognized and measures were implemented to ensure the safety of personnel as well as to minimize the potential damage to existing operations. In late October, damage to underground operations was observed as deep as the 2000 Level. In the final assessment, the global mobilized mass was a “wedge”-shaped hangingwall block extending from surface to about 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. The “wedge” boundaries are defined by a fault and shear zone which have continuous lengths in excess of 1070 m (3500 ft); its base by shearing through the host rock mass; and its eastern face by deep tension cracks (Fig. 1). Mined and filled excavations at the western face of the “wedge” allowed mobilization of a mass in excess of 30 M tonnes. Movements in excess of 75 cm (30 in.) per day were recorded on the surface stations that preceded the complete shutdown of operations on October 29, 1997. The evaluations in the days following the shut-down were centred on mitigation of immediate and future possible negative impacts on infrastructure and mining of the remaining No. 1 Mine reserves while ensuring the safety of the operators. This effort required the rapid assessment of the potential damage of the block movement on underground infrastructure, stope access, drainage and ventilation, as well as airblast potential due to the falling of a large block into the pit near the ventilation intake at the base of the pit. These assessments were presented in a previous paper (Seldon et al., 1999). In total, the lateral movement of the block on the ground surface was over 4.3 m (14 ft). This paper describes the detailed studies performed to understand the failure mechanism and to assess the impacts on future mining in No. 1 Mine.

The "V" system was first introduced by the West Virginia Coal & Coke Company at their No. 9 mine, Norton. Norton is a small mining village on the B. & 0. railway, about seven miles from the town of Elkins. This year, accompanied by G. D. MacDougall, I visited this mine to obtain first-hand information regarding this modem system and to determine its adaptability to conditions in Nova Scotia. The following is a brief account of my observations. The seam that is being worked is known as the Lower Kittaning, which, at this point, has an average thickness of 7 feet. This includes a band of hard clay varying in thickness from 8 to 14 inches, which occurs about 2 feet from the pavement, also 8 inches of inferior coal at the roof. The latter is not recovered, which leaves to be mined about 5 1/2 feet of clean coal. The roof is slate and shale for the first 30 feet, followed by 40 to 60 feet of sandstone; the total cover is from 80 to 250 feet thick. The seam lies very flat, with a dip of only 2 per cent., and, as the dip is toward the main entrance, it' is in favor of the load, also providing natural drainage for any water the mine makes. As the mine is not gassy, and there is no water to be pumped out, one can understand that mining conditions are practically ideal.

"A large-scale panel destress blast was fired at Brunswick mine in the fall of 1999 in order to reduce the ground stresses in a critically important neighbouring mining region. This work, sponsored by the Mining Division of CAMIRO and Brunswick mine, consisted in heavily choke-blasting — and subsequently leaving in place — a massive waste sulphide pillar in the southwest end of the 1000 m level. This paper describes the approach and design methodology used to try to maximize breakage in the rock mass in the area to destress, while minimizing damage to critical infrastructures in the vicinity. The loading operations, as well as the results of the blast — in terms of its field performances, as recorded by near-field blast vibration monitoring equipment, visual postblast assessments and measured impact on the regional stress field — are discussed as well. A brief comparison between the measured stress changes and inelastic numerical modelling of the test site is also presented.Un tir à grande échelle de relâchement des contraintes dans un pilier a été effectué à la mine Brunswick à la fin de l’automne 1999 dans le but de diminuer les contraintes de terrain dans une très importante zone de production adjascente. Mining operations, whether new or existing, are constantly looking for ways to maximize production and improve energy efficiency, while keeping the footprint required to a minimum. The Nordberg MP1250 cone crusher was designed with these three goals in mind. A series of side-by-side evaluations comparing an MP1250 to an MP1000 were completed at two Freeport-McMoRan operations. The first evaluation began October 2009 in a tertiary position and the second began March 2010 in a secondary position, where it remains in full production today. Utilizing 25% higher power capacity than the existing MP1000 tertiary crushers, the MP1250 had 29% higher capacity and 17% lower specific energy, adjusted for differences in feed and product size. The MP1250 compared to the existing MP1000 secondary crushers achieved 30% higher capacity at a slightly reduced specific energy, while achieving a finer product. The MP1250?s higher capacity and energy efficiency may have application in many crushing plants. Depending on site specific economic factors, greenfield projects may benefit from a smaller footprint and less ancillary equipment, whereas brownfield projects may benefit from higher capacity or a finer product within the same footprint.

High levels of geological heterogeneity occurring over relatively short distances pose a challenge to the unconventional open-pit techniques used in oil sands mining. There is strong motivation to mine selectively and minimize dilution and loss; however, the large equipment and high mining rate used to meet production targets tend to reduce selectivity. A numerical model is developed to account for geological complexity, mining equipment, regulatory criteria, and other operational parameters. This framework is used for more accurate forecasts, optimization of equipment, and other operational decisions. An example demonstrates the approach in light of Alberta Energy Regulator criteria.

A brief description is given of the requirements which No. 4 Shaft has been designed to meet and of the methods by which two-stage winding of rock has been accommodated in a single shaft sunk to a depth of 7,421 ft. This is followed by a consideration of the factors which led to the decision to sink the shaft as rapidly as possible. Introduction T HE No. 4 Shaft of Hartebeest-fontein Gold Mining Company, Ltd., has been sited to serve the deep southern area of the mine, some 1,500 claims in extent, between the elevations of 6,250 and 7,300 ft. below surface. From this area, some two-thirds of the mine production will ultimately be obtained. Above the 6,-250-ft. elevation, an existing shaft hoisting system, situated adjacent to the reduction plant, is of adequate capacity to cater for all ore hoisted to surface for milling. No. 4 Shaft will therefore be required to provide downcast ventilation of 1,000,000 c.f.m., together with surface hoisting facilities for men, material and development rock and underground hoisting

"A SHORT WHILE AGO I enquired about The Mining Society of Nova Scotia. In all honesty I was apprehensive about addressing such a body if it was highly geared to the technical aspects of discovering and obtaining mineral resources. I was told that this would not be the case. Rather, there would likely be in attendance a broad cross section of people from business, industry and government and from across Canada and the U.S.A. Thus there would be an interest in a free-wheeling discussion of the prospects for industrial development in Cape Breton. Accordingly - being one who hates to miss an opportunity - I intend to exploit the invitation of your executive by being, over the next short while, frankly promotional. I would like to talk about what I consider to be some of the most important attributes of Cape Breton for industrial development and identify some of those prospects. Secondly, I will quickly review some of the things the Cape Breton Development Corporation is doing these days to stimulate some of that industrial development."

On this occasion, however, the President of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, our good friend Dr. H. J. Fraser, has been our host at the enjoyable reception preceding this Institute Luncheon, which luncheon was sponsored by our official host, The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, one of our .constituent bodies.

"The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."

The Polokwane Smelter Complex (PSC) relies on a single 68MW high-intensity six-in-line furnace to smelt a planned 650 000 t/a dry concentrate to produce a platinum group metals (PGM)-bearing matte. As typical of a greenfields venture, considerable attention was paid to the project development and implementation stages of design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Somewhat unusual though, was the role of a dedicated multi-disciplinary "Operational Readiness" and support team, comprising the owners team and specialists from the furnace designer, HATCH, to effect a safe and rapid ramp-up to the design smelter capacity of 68MW. The challenges encountered in developing an effective partnership will be discussed. The modus operandi and roles of the "Operational Readiness" team during the design, procurement, construction and commissioning stages as well as that of the operational support team within the overall ramp-up objective will be presented. This little sketch of the late Willet G. Miller, Provincial Geologist of Ontario, is intended to be neither a biography of his career nor a eulogy of his life. His biography has already been written in an incomparable manner by Mr. T. A. Rickard, his eulogy by Canon Cody. What more can be said of Dr. Miller than is summed up in the words of that great Canadian divine, Canon Cody, that he was "Big in body, big in heart, and, as we learned, big in brain." This article, then, will merely record a few personal reminiscences of the man himself, and while they are necessarily disjointed, they may at least serve to illustrate certain traits in his character which are not generally known or appreciated outside of the circle of his intimate friends. In the latter part of May in the year 1904, Willet G. Miller, with two? assistants, set out for the small village of Haileybury to begin his geological work in the area a few miles to the south which he was soon to name Cobalt. At that time the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway was not finished, although the right-of-way was cleared and partly graded. The nearest railway station was on the Canadian Pacific at the south end of lake Timiskaming, from which point the old steamer Meteor carried passengers and freight up the long, narrow and deep waters of lake Timiskaming, a very pleasant trip of some sixty miles. On this particular trip there was a fairly large crowd on board consisting of settlers going into the clay belt north of lake Timiskaming, of lumbermen, and of a few merchants and commercial travellers who were interested in the small business centres of Haileybury, New Liskeard and Ville Marie. Scarcely any attention was paid to the reports of the newly found silver deposits, although the daily papers had announced discoveries in the district six months before. As a matter of fact, the chief excitement on board was afforded by a moose, which, in swimming from the Ontario to the Quebec shore of the lake, crossed the bow of the boat, the captain steering to within a few yards of the terrified animal.
