This paper discusses the requirements for a successful simulation modelling study, and the steps involved in the modelling process. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation are described, and a case study highlights how not to go about it. Two other case studies, for a decline truck haulage and a block caving production operation, are used to illustrate the types of variables whose impact may be investigated. Typical results are presented to indicate the sorts of presentation styles the author has found useful for conveying study results to project sponsors. Standard spreadsheet charting techniques can be very useful in this respect, but the possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the study team.

Determining the environmental consequences of green field projects is becoming an increasingly important component of new projects. Feasibility studies are regarded by potential investors as incomplete if a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has not been completed. These EIAÆs need to meet various local and international requirements in order to achieve bankability. Heavy mineral mining projects are often located in ecological sensitive coastal zones, and bring with them a suite of social impacts in the mainly developing countries within which they are usually located. This paper draws on experience gained in undertaking EIAÆs for heavy mineral mining projects in Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa, and uses these case studies to identify potential pitfalls. Important lessons include the need to initiate the EIA process as early as possible in the project, in order to develop management systems to mitigate the environmental impacts of exploration. Close and on-going consultation with affected communities is also seen to be critical to the success of the EIA. Proactive participation on the part of the environmental consultants with the project team and all interested and affected parties (IAPs) is important. An EIA commissioned later in project planning makes it difficult for the EIA to contribute in a positive manner to the project. Early engagement with environmental consultants allows the environmental assessment to develop from a report to an actual process, and to become fully integrated with project planning. The proviso is that an initial æfatal flawÆ assessment is required to identify any potential æshow stoppersÆ, in order to meet one of the important objectives of EIA, namely an assessment of whether or not the proposed project is the preferred development intervention in the study area. For more controversial proposals this may require the commissioning of a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), which circumvents some of the limitations of the project level EIA. Whilst confidentiality is a constraint to full disclosure, an open participatory approach to public consultation is essential to add credibility to the EIA process and to gain, at least, the acceptance of the process from the majority of IAPs. Full disclosure is encouraged by organisations such as the International Finance Corporation, who acknowledge that good public consultation costs a lot of money, but bad public consultation costs a lot more! An open approach to disclosure presents understandable difficulties for proponents, as they are required to give up some of their control over the project, and to trust the social scientists engaged in the process. However, independence in the EIA process is critical to its success. This paper will highlight these and other issues by drawing on five case studies to identify lessons learnt, and explore the above themes in more detail.

Geological uncertainty is reduced by improved understanding of the relationship between regional-scale geological basement features (structure, composition, depth) and known local structural risk (such as recognised structural hazards at the mine). Coal mining and exploration entities can be more efficient and effective in managing geological risk at a range of scales. A more efficient and effective performance in forward interpreting and managing geological risk will result in a more efficient and effective exploration and also incremental or even significant mining cost improvements. In order to improve the understanding of basement features, a new 4D regional structural/basin framework for the Sydney Basin and the eastern part of the Gunnedah Basin has been constructed to provide primarily coal exploration and mining with a more integrated geological framework for ongoing subregional to mine-scale geological risk based studies. The model has been developed from a range of available regional geophysical and geological datasets, of variable detail and reliability, which have been brought together to generate a more robust structural and tectonic model than could be generated with any one single dataset. An initial regional structural model for the Sydney Basin was constructed in 2003 and an update to the model was released in 2005 (SRK Consulting, 2003; 2005). The development and ongoing refinement of the model was undertaken with financial and data support from a number of coal mining industry, gas exploration and government organisations. Prior to, and following the development of the regional structural/basin model and associated Information Base, a number of more area-specific studies have been completed, using the æbasement upÆ assessment approach. The methodology for developing comprehensive structural models, from the basement up, is outlined. The approach can be applied at a country-wide, regional or lease area scale. Case examples of where this approach has been used as an effective and efficient method in improving geological certainty and as a predictive tool to help manage geological risk are also presented.

æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations. The fundamental natural ingredient of any mining development is an ore reserve. The classical definition of an ore reserve has both technical and commercial components, each involving elements of risk. By definition the desposit must contain mineral values which are "extractable at a profit". Metallurgy supplies a vital link between these two basic requirements of a successful mining project; the metallurgical input establishes the process by which the contained minerals may be recovered and converted into marketable product(s).

The C.S.A. concentrator of Cobar Mines Proprietary Limited was expanded in 1974 to treat 80 000 tonnes of copper-lead-zinc ore per four week period. In September 1980 the N.S.W. Environ- mental Planning and Assessment Act was gazetted. This legislation created a new arena of government involvement in the procedure for obtaining approval to open a new mine, or expand an existing mine in N.S.W. Since 1980 the legislation relating to environmental protection requirements, the procedure for obtaining Development Consent and the nature of relevant government policies have caused considerable confusion on the part of many potential developers. Implementation of the legislation has now become systematic and relatively predictable. However, certain aspects can be improved and require urgent government action.

Considerable confusion is to be found in the methods of estimating mineral reserves. The solution appears to be more cooperation between industry and government to agree upon a classification system with guidelines to overcome the problem of the many variable factors affecting reserves. The classification system proposed by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Geological Survey (USBM/USGS) together with the guidelines similar to those suggested by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy/Australian Mining Industry Council (AusIMM/AMIC) is recommended for reporting mineral reserves to government.

The subject is considered primarily from the university point of view and relates more to the disciplines of mining and mineral processing than to geology or perhaps metall- urgy, but the conclusions have wider implic- ations. Continuing education, being the subject of a separate paper, is only briefly discussed. The important and particularly relevant training and industry role of the technician engineer and technician are not considered.

Results obtained from linear sweep voltammetry at a graphite anode in cryolite-alumina melts are presented, together with those obtained from a chronopotentiometric investigation of the influence of dissolved metal.
