Borehole breakout is a drilling induced phenomenon caused by overstress of rock around the borehole. Its depth usually aligns with the minimum horizontal principal stress direction. For this reason, it has been used to determine stress orientations and a series of researchers also argued its dimensions can be indicative of stress magnitudes. If the stress dependencies of breakout geometries are well understood, it is possible to estimate stress magnitudes based on these data. This paper investigates the influences of critical parameters on breakout dimensions, including absolute stress magnitudes, stress ratios and borehole diameter. Several experiments have been conducted on cubic (120 x 120 x 120 mm3) sandstone samples with pre-drilled holes (22 mm and 30 mm) under true tri-axial loading conditions using UNSW self-designed equipment. Experimental results confirm the increasing maximum horizontal principal stress magnitudes result in larger angular span and longer breakout depth at constant minimum horizontal and vertical principal stresses. There is also a considerable discrepancy observed between experimental results and the analytical model. Checking the quality of a blast may be considered as subjective. Checking this quality will require measuring objective parameters. One of them is the resulting fragmentation of the blasted product. Numerous fragmentation æmeasuringÆ systems have been developed and marketed, based on image-processing. This presentation of FragScan will illustrate advantages and difficulties when using such a system. FragScan is essentially defending a policy of large and representative sampling. The purpose is to show how fragmentation is discriminating both productivity and profit of quarry operations on a blast-by blast basis. The next step will then be to ædriveÆ the blasting process to reach a æbetterÆ fragmentation. Other applications require the fragmentation as an essential result: this is the case for large boulders used in structure-reinforcement. Several case-studies have shown that FragScan can be used for quality-control, checking size-distribution of the product according to the requirements of the end-user. Only clear thinking about the precise use of such a æmeasurementÆ will further the success of this task.

The published safety policy of Mount Isa Mines Limited, together with details of the organisation and control techniques adopted by management to pursue an active safety programme within the company, is presented. The importance of communication by management through the organisational hierarchy and procedures instituted to ensure rapid and concise feedback on safety concerns are detailed. The paper also describes the role of the occupational health department and safety committees in assisting management to monitor the safety effort of supervisors and employees. Current safety performance levels are tabled together with details of some aspects of the programme on which safety effort will be concentrated in the future.

An important problem occurring in the iron and steel industry of Egypt is the presence of manganese oxide and chlorine with different percentages in the Bahariya Iron Ore Deposit, Western Desert, Egypt. In this work we used a geostatistical method known as the Volume- Variance Relationship to predict grade fluctua- tions of Fe% , Mn% and Cl% in the ore after blasting a certain volume from the ore deposit, on the other hand, if we have a certain limit for each of these chemical components, we can select the bench blasting dimension to give these limits.

Costain Resources Limited operates two open cut coal mines in the Hunter Valley coalfields of New South Wales, Ravensworth Mine and Warkworth Mine. The location of the Ravensworth operation is shown in Figure 1. In the case of the Ravensworth Mine, Costain Australia is essentially a contract miner and is contracted to supply coal to Pacific Power (previously The Electricity Commission of New South Wales), on contracts won through a tender system. Due to the existing infrastructure and the lease area that associated with the contract, the mining strips at Ravensworth South have a maximum strike length of 1500 metres. This paper deals with the methods of scheduling used to overcome the challenge of mining the short strike length, multi-seam deposit at Ravensworth South.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).

High levels of contamination (non magnetics) were present in the magnetite medium of the D.M. cyclone circuit. Attempts were made to minimise the amount of undersize (-lmm) material in the D.M. cyclone feed by improving initial desliming and examining those factors that contributed to any overall reduction in desliming efficiency. Circuit density control was improved and a system of continuous contamination monitoring implemented. A brief description is included of the major alterations to circuit control philosophy. The significant improvement in overall D.M. cyclone circuit performance is outlined.

Tailings dams constructed by the upstream method have traditionally been built using the sand fraction of the tailings, which has automatically provided a relatively permeable embankment material, and helped provide the necessary drainage conditions which are a pre-requisite for safe and stable dam construction using this method. This paper discusses some recent trends which have resulted in proposals to use impermeable material in place of the sand fraction as the embankment material, both for the starter dam, and subsequent lifts. The consequences of these types of decisions on the overall stability of the dam are illustrated, and the need for continued monitoring of pore pressures in the tailings as the dam is raised is emphasised.

A history is given of the dust control techniques developed and applied by the mining companies at Broken Hill. A history of the regeneration works undertaken since 1936 is out- lined. Particular emphasis is placed on the stabilization of mine residue dumps which are located throughout a belt of mining leases in the middle of the city and which began in 1937. The establishment of vegetation for dust control techniques is discussed in detail and a case study is given of the successful revegetation of the sides of a 650 metre long, 350 metre wide and 35 metre high residue dump.

The establishment of vegetation onto open cut mine spoil is dependant on the nature of the soil and rock strata of the overburden. Experience has shown that in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland the nature of the minespoil changes considerably as subsequent and deeper mining strips intercept changing rock strata. The different mixes of strata at the surface of reshaped spoilpiles can produce variable response in the sown vegetation cover. It is usual that land features of mine sites are known in detail and are depicted on mine or locality maps. Subsurface strata and lithology descriptions are available and are used for planning of open cut mining operations. Surface and subsurface data can also be used to estimate the intrinsic nature of overburden through the use of fence diagrams. Lithology at points along a mined strip can be obtained and used to describe overburden. Indications are that correlations exist between salinity of overburden components and the response of vegetation. The developed procedure thus becomes a useful tool for the prediction of revegetation Practices.

Probabilistic analysis is widely used in slope stability assessment because of its capability to take into account uncertainties associated with geotechnical parameters. There are, however, still many unresolved practical issues to the application of the method. One of these issues is the integration of assessments when multiple sets of fractures are considered for the entire slope. In the present study, this issue is addressed within the framework of Monte Carlo simulation. Probability of failure for pairs of fracture sets are assessed independently and the final assessment of the probability of failure for the entire slope is done using conditional probabilities. Prominent Hill open pit, in particular, the problematic fresh Bulldog shale formation, was used as a case study to test the method proposed. The SWEDGE program of the RocScience software package was used for the analysis.

The Lake Rotokaua sulphur deposit, near Taupo, New Zealand, is a lacustrine sedimentary ore body, 220 acres in area and from 7 ft to 96 ft thick, containing, within the area drilled to date, some 20 million long tons of ore averaging 25% elemental sulphur in unconsolidated tuffaceous diatomaceous clay, overlain by about 120 ft of pumice sand and by the shallow Lake Rotokaua. An additional amount of perhaps 4 million tons of sulphur is regarded as probable in the area remaining to be drilled. Current economic studies cover the problems of mining an unconsolidated water-saturated formation with some residual thermal activity nearby; conservation and restoration after mining in a scenic recreation area; beneficiation of the ore and extraction of high- purity sulphur, principally for fertilizer manufacture. The deposit has additional importance as a pointer to possible further discoveries in the Thermal Region.\

This paper compares the designs of heap leach facilities for four precious metal mining projects in the southwestern United States. These four proposed projects are of small-to medium-size relative to other operating mines in the United States, and are either permitted or in the final stages of permitting. The differences and similarities in the heap leach facility designs are compared with respect to site conditions, operating conditions and regulatory requirements. This comparison provides a summary of the state-of-practice for heap leach facility design in the southwestern United States and identifies current issues in project development and process material containment.
