The study focuses on sulfide oxidation processes in unweathered pyrite-rich mine tailings from a soil-covered impoundment in northern Sweden. To simulate the oxygen-limited conditions in water saturated tailings two long-term column experiments were performed. Results are presented for the first 11 months of the experiments at room temperature. The tailings used in the experiments were of two different grain sizes (one coarse grained, in the range 0.02 - 0.6 mm with a grain surface area of 1.86 m2 g-1, and one fine-grained, in the range 0.0015 - 0.06 mm with a grain surface area of 10.00 m2 g-1) and with slightly different mineralogical composition. The S:Fe molar ratio in the leachates (1.0 - 1.5) indicates either that pyrrhotite is the main iron sulfide undergoing oxidation in our experiments, or, alternatively that the S:Fe molar ratio in the leachate is determined by pyrite weathering in conjunction with other processes releasing iron or immobilising sulfate. However, speciation modelling of the leachates indicates that ferrihydrite was close to saturation, suggesting that a ferric oxyhydroxide may have dissolved/ precipitated during the experimental period, thereby affecting the S:Fe molar ratio. Pyrite oxidation rates obtained from the two column experiments during æsteady-stateÆ were 2.25 + 10-13 and 8.45 + 10-14 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Pyrrhotite oxidation rates, as an alternative, were 2.31 + 10-12 and 1.24 + 10-11 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Natural microbial activity was confirmed in both the tailings and the leachates; therefore, the obtained oxidation rates are not strictly abiotic. It is thus concluded, based on the experimental results, that tailing heterogeneity will result in zones with different oxidation rates, related to their physical and chemical properties.

Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. Vein formation in response to deformation observed at Penjom reflects regional structural deformation within the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia and specifically along the Bentong-Raub Suture zone.CITATION:Endut, Z, Ng, T F, Abdul Aziz, J H and Teh, G H, 2015. Multi Torque Industries and Jadefoil have developed a safer, more efficient method of explosive protection, retention, placement, and constraint. In particular, this refers to advancements in airbag technology, where the system will offer an alternative to conventional gasbags and decking methods to provide a far more controlled and safer working environment. Airbags have provided operator control and reliability which has not until now been possible in this type of application. The benefits have been noted by current users and the advantages have provided an increase in productivity and significant savings in explosive waste. Obvious problems with gasbags lie in their instability in hot conditions where the danger is associated with gas canisters exploding with great force posing a significant risk to operators. Other problems associated with the decking systems currently on offer is the lack of versatility and operator control. The airbag systems give the operator full control to guarantee accurate placement, assured retention whilst boasting a quick operation of less than a few seconds for conventional void blocking, decking and plugging. One of the main advantages of the airbags is that the operator has full control over placement and retention force, therefore in wetter conditions where slippage can be a problem extra air can be added at the operatorÆs discretion to ensure a sufficient grip. Technical calculations coupled with experimental testing have demonstrated that an airbag will support the weight of a 30 m water column in an 89 mm hole at an initial bag pressure of 5 psig. Applications are increasingly growing whilst more customers embrace their use. Advancements such as the ability to deck in overhead holes, block voids in overhead holes at any depth, explosive retention in very wet conditions, longhole stabilisers to prevent hole closure and concertinaed liners reflect a dynamic potential for new technologies. All of these applications provide a decrease in explosive waste, an increase in operator safety, an increase in explosive protection, and an increase in productivity.

Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

Intrusion related ore deposits are widespread in the Central Peruvian Cordillera Occidental and adjacent high-plains to the east and include porphyry Cu (-Au, Mo; eg Morococha), Cu-Zn (Pb-) skarn (eg Antamina), Pb-Zn-Ag carbonate hosted vein deposits (eg Uchucchacua), cordilleran base metal (eg Cerro de Pasco) and epithermal deposits (eg Quicay). Geochronology and petrochemistry of intrusive rocks associated with mineralisation reveals that: most ore deposits were emplaced in the late middle to early late Miocene; and are related to calc-alkaline granodioritic igneous rocks with Sm/Yb >3, Sr/Y >40 and Y/Th <1.5. The largest deposits, including Antamina, Colquijirca and Cerro de Pasco are associated with intrusions with Sm/Yb >4 and which, as indicated by Pb and Sr isotopic data, have undergone relatively moderate middle and upper crustal assimilation. The chemical signature of igneous rocks related to mineralisation likely reflects melt equilibration in the lower crust at a crustal thickness of more than 45 km. Mineralisation was favoured by a change from normal to flat subduction, resulting in increased compression, crustal thickening and subsequent cessation of the magmatic arc. Premiocene ore deposits do occur, but are restricted to a broad E-W corridor between Uchucchacua and Milpo and probably were controlled by a crustal-scale structural discontinuity across the strike of theAndes. Not all igneous rocks with high Sm/Yb and Sr/Y ratios did acquire their trace element signature in the lower crust. Petrographic and Pb isotopic evidence indicates shallow crustal hornblende fractionation or assimilation of pelitic material as possible causes for high trace element ratios in some rocks. These are apparently unrelated to polymetallic mineralisation. Thus, critical evaluation of petrographic and geochemical data in metallogenetic studies, especially in areas with complex basement architecture such as Central Peru is critical and should not be reduced to simple trace element ratios. Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

Acid generating sulfidic tailings covering a surface area of approximately ten hectares have been deposited in the historic mining area of Lavrion in Greece. For the development of a remediation strategy, the performance of three alternative acid generation control techniques was assessed under actual field conditions. The techniques involved the application of dry covers, including a synthetic HDPE liner and a compacted clay layer with capillary barriers. Furthermore, the potential formation of a low permeability hardpan layer at the sulfidic tailings surface by limestone addition was investigated. The field tests covered an area of 2500 m2, which was divided in equal quadrants, corresponding to the control plot and the three alternative remedial options. To monitor the amount and quality of percolated water, lysimeters were installed beneath the four plot areas. Based on the monitoring results over a period of six years, due to the dry climate encountered in the Lavrion area, a low amount of water percolates through the pyrites if no action is taken (control area), corresponding to 20 - 25 mm per year. This water is highly acidic, pH = 1.2, and contains a heavy load of contaminants, eg Fe 40 g/L, Zn 15 g/L, and As 1.5 g/L. The HDPE cover eliminated the percolation of water into the material for a period of five years, whereas thereafter the volume of leachates increased to values similar to those recorded in the control plot. The water collected in the lysimeter of the clay cover has been minimal corresponding to approximately five per cent of the drainage volume produced in the control area. In the fourth plot, which involved limestone addition to sulfidic tailings, the volume of drainage initially collected was almost double compared to the control area. After three years of monitoring, significant reduction in the amount of percolated water was observed, attributed to the formation of a cemented layer (hardpan), at a depth of 40-80 cm from the testpad surface.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

Lafayette Mining Limited, a listed Australian company, is developing a polymetallic Project on the island of Rapu Rapu, located to the east of southern Luzon in the Philippines. The Rapu Rapu Project is based on the Ungay deposit, which has proven and probable reserves of 6.0 million tonnes of 2.5 g/t Au, 28 g/t Ag, 1.2 per cent Cu and 2.1 per cent Zn. The Project will produce copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide flotation plant as well as dore from a CIL gold plant. Average annual metal production over the projected six-year mine life is 9800 tonnes of copper, 14 000 tonnes of zinc, 50 000 ounces of gold and 590 000 ounces of silver. Despite a rich mineral endowment and long mining history, there have not been any significant new mine developments in the Philippines since the early-1990s. The investment climate has been affected by legal challenges to the 1995 mining code, civil unrest in parts of the country, the impeachment of the previous President and community concerns about the industryÆs environmental performance. As a consequence, the Rapu Rapu Project is viewed as a test case û within both the country and the international mining industry û on whether minerals investment in the Philippines is an acceptable business proposition from a risk perspective. Lafayette has faced formidable challenges in managing the development risks of the Project. The major risk areas of the Project for which the company developed strategies include: regulatory, environmental and approvals issues, technical evaluation, project development, social and community issues, land acquisition, and financial and marketing issues. This paper describes the risk management strategies successfully pursued by the company, and which have the Project on track to commence construction in 2003. Dealing with each of the areas in turn, Lafayette sought to develop strategies which either effectively neutralised, minimised or otherwise addressed the key risks most likely to be experienced.

Hindered settling devices (teeter bed, up-current) are widely used in the mining industry to classify mineral streams into various size fractions and to separate minerals. In the coal industry these devices are extremely successful in separating coal of low densities from shale and pyrite. In the beach sand and in the iron ore industry, this equipment is used to beneficiate minerals either as stand alone units or lately as classifiers in spiral circuits. The challenge that these applications give to metallurgists is to be able to simulate the equipment by using mathematical models with or without the aid of small bench scale tests. In any green fields and many brownfields projects, limited amounts of samples make pilot plant tests difficult. Although there are mathematical approaches available, the accuracy is of such a nature that it can not be used for design purposes. This refers to the use of StrokeÆs law, NewtonÆs and the so called intermediate law as is widely published. Research done by the author indicates that in most applications none of the above laws apply. Using the original data as published by Perry and Chilton (Chemical Engineering Handbook, pp 5-64, 1973) and re-plotting it indicates that the settling velocity of particles is a function of (particle diameter)n where n varies between 1.2 and 1.6 which is different from that predicted by the intermediate law that suggests that n = 1.18. Another way of describing the relationship between the drag force and the Reynolds number is done by iterating between settling velocity and the Reynolds number. This needs more computer time but the accuracy obtained from this does add value to simulations. A small but simple test is suggested to determine the settling velocity of particles to enable metallurgists to determine variations from the theoretical calculations to determine the influence of viscosity and particle shape.

The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

Over the last 20 years the mining industry has played a key role in the further development of many Central Queensland and New South Wales communities. The number of people who are employed by the coal mining industry, the number of transient residents, shift work and the town facilities have all contributed to how the community views the coal mining industry. As the coal mining boom continues and the mining communities continue to grow more emphasis is needed to address the community concerns, specifically the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the coal mining companies may have on these communities. Central Queensland coal mining operations are situated in the Bowen Basin. Many of the towns in the region have been developed specifically for the coal mining industry with 13 - 50 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) of people living in the communities being directly employed by the mines. The introduction of shift work, differing rosters and the mining boom have resulted in considerable changes to these communities with more transient contractors and permanent employees taking up residence outside of these communities. This change, however, has not been as noticeable in the Hunter Valley region. The Hunter Valley, situated in the Sydney Basin has two main mining towns, Singleton and Muswellbrook. Of the 37 173 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) people that reside in the communities 13.8 to 16.5 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) are employed directly by the mines. The Hunter Valley is a large tourist destination due to its many vineyards; this results in a diverse community where mining is not the sole means of employment. Similar to Central Queensland the mining boom has brought more people to the Hunter Valley region, although greater percentages have taken up residence in the communities. The views vary between the two regions on the coal mining industry, specifically on the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the industry may have on the surrounding communities.

The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand near the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 45 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. The Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) is owned jointly by New Zealand Oil & Gas Limited (NZOG) and private investors.   The project has followed a long and difficult road towards project implementation which is now a reality with mine construction scheduled to commence in November 2005. The first stage of the project, the consent and land access process has been the most difficult. Resource consents for the project were first applied for, granted and appealed in 1998. A second round of modified resources consents followed a similar path in 2001. Following consultation with a range of parties including local and central government as well as the Department of Conservation, in March 2004 the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through Department of Conservation land. In October 2004, the Environment Court issued a Memorandum of Consent granting resource consents with conditions that had been negotiated between PRCC and the appellants.   The second stage of the project, investigation and design, commenced in December 2004 and was completed in June 2005 with the PRCC board ratifying the project capital and operating budgets. While the investigation and design work was proceeding, PRCC were also engaged in securing private equity and bank debt funding for the project. Formal Board approval to proceed with project construction was granted in September 2005 following completion of fund raising.   The project consists of a number of significant construction activities, namely: +        10.5 km of mine access road through previous logged and virgin rain forest; +        2.2 km of tunnel through metamorphic rock; +        a coal preparation plant about 8.3 km from the mine portal; +        an underground coal preparation plant; and +        a major slurry pump station, high and low pressure underground water supply systems to support hydraulic mining units and underground coal transport respectively.   Project construction is expected to be completed in April 2007 with completion of the ventilation shaft. Mine production will commence in December 2006 with coal from pit bottom development which will be carried out by the mine owner.

The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit occurs within the complexly deformed and metamorphosed sediments of the Middle Proterozoic Cloncurry Terrane, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. The sedimentary sequence comprises a thick package of variably carbonatic argillitic and siliciclastic sediments of the Corella Formation, Lady Clayre Dolomite and Knapdale Quartzite. A slate and calc-argillite unit locally referred to as the Dugald River Slates is the host to the economically significant deposit. The deformational history of the Dugald River area involved three phases of ductile deformation. The present geometry of the Dugald River Main Lode is recognised as a strike extensive steep westerly dipping tabular sheet, within which a steep north westerly plunging zone of pronounced thickening is evident. This zone is interpreted to have formed during folding via remobilisation of the sulphides into a shoot-like body, the geometry of which was controlled by stretching associated with the folding. Further modification of the shoot and sulphide re-distribution has resulted from late phase transgressive shears. The sulphide mineralisation is characterised by three distinctive sulphide types, laminated, banded and breccia, the distribution of which define two broad zones. The northern zone is a narrow I - 5 m thick stratabound unit comprising finely laminated and banded sulphide mineralisation within a well bedded fine grained argillite sequence. This is part of the Lady Clayre Dolomite sequence and is a predeformational precursor form of mineralisation. The southern zone comprises the thickest development of mineralisation (up to 30 m) characterised by slate-sulphide breccias and veins derived from complex polyphase remobilisation of the sulphide mineralisation. It is this zone which forms a stratabound locally transgressive body within the high strain Dugald River Slates and which contains the main body of economic mineralisation. Sulphide mineralogy comprises sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena and traces of chalcopyrite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. The present resource for the Dugald River deposit stands at 38 Mt grading 13.0 per cent Zn, 2.1 per cent Pb and 42 g/t AS. The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit is regarded as an example of a syndiagenetic stratabound sulphide accumulation which, as the result of polyphase deformation and upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies metamorphism, has undergone extensive remobilisation and Rccrystallisation.

This paper looks at two ways to estimate the bulk mineralogy of the rocks for assay intervals. The aim is to find an efficient indicator of the most common minerals in the rock. Phase (modal) analysis has traditionally been done using visual methods such as point counting and image analysis. A modern version of this process is the X-ray point counting routine using the SEM-EDS based software. These methods are too slow and expensive for routine analysis of bulk sample mineralogy at the normal assay spacing.Two sources of data were considered that provide information that can be used to determine the mineral abundance in assay samples. The most widely applied method is (semi-) quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD). The QXRD method is most applicable to major minerals and has limited application to minerals at low abundance. The nominal detection limit is 0.5 per cent. Values below five per cent have large errors. A second, less common, method is calculation of mineralogy from chemical assay data. Conversion of chemical analyses to mineralogical analyses depends on the unique chemical composition of each mineral. Elements only found in one mineral are easily accounted for, but many compositions are ambiguous. Deciding on the actual mineralogy is not simple. Recalculation of mineral mode from chemical analyses is more accurate than QXRD when the correct minerals, and mineral compositions, are known.Where only a few QXRD analyses are available they can be used to setup a protocol for calculation of mineralogy from assay data. Linear programming works well in this environment. The best results are obtained when both H2O and CO2 are directly measured. Loss-on-ignition (LOI) should be included if these are not available.Where both QXRD and chemical analysis are available for all samples, the best results are obtained using the least squared method to merge the data sets assuming QXRD has much higher analytical errors than chemical assays. The combined method provides more robust results because the high abundance minerals are controlled by the QXRD measurements while the chemical assays improve the precision for low abundance minerals

The Youga gold mine in Burkina Faso, West Africa, is scheduled to produce first gold in the third quarter of calendar 2007. The project is expected to produce 540 000 oz of gold over 6.5 years, from a conventional open pit carbon in leach mine. The direct capital cost of the project is US$47 M. Etruscan Resources Inc, a Canadian based gold exploration and development company, holds 90 per cent of the project company Burkina Mining Company SA (BMC). The state of Burkina Faso is free-carried for the remaining ten per cent of BMC. RMB Resources Limited, of Melbourne Australia, has arranged a US$35 M project finance facility for BMC (the Borrower) as the majority of funding for the Youga project development. The loan facility was provided by RMB Australia Holdings and Macquarie Bank Ltd (the Lenders) each as to 50 per cent in the lending syndicate. The Lenders also provided a gold hedging facility to guarantee a minimum price for the projectÆs gold production. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, part of the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA). The project financing is the first such facility to be arranged for a mining project in Burkina Faso, with little or no precedent available in other UEMOA countries. Therefore, while the Youga gold project is forecast to be a robust project applying conventional mining and processing methods, a number of legal, technical, commercial and social issues required identification, evaluation and resolution before the loan could be established. This paper describes that evaluation process and the resolution of these issues. In-house experience and expertise in both the LendersÆ and BorrowerÆs teams has facilitated a greater understanding and æownershipÆ of the issues and hence provided comfort with risks which might not normally be taken in conventional project developments and project financings. As a result, blanket external reviews were not required by the Lenders. A long-standing relationship between Etruscan and RMB Resources also facilitated solutions to a number of issues. Nevertheless, a degree of flexibility by the Lenders, the Borrower and Etruscan was required to successfully close the financing.

Computer controlled truck dispatching systems is a newly-developed technical system in surface mines with shovel-truck technology. The real time dispatching criteria, as the core of optimal truck dispatching software, are analysed and a new criterion, complex dispatching criterion, is put forward. Dispatching criteria previously proposed include: 1. `Earliest Loading' (EL) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck can be loaded earliest. 2. `Max Truck' (MT) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck will have the shortest waiting time. 3. `Max Shovel' (MS) - to assign a truck to the shovel which has been waiting for the longest time. 4. `Minimum Saturation Degree' (MSD) - to assign a truck to the shovel at the branch where the truck flow saturation degree is minimum. 5. `Minimum Saturation Degree with Truck Cycle time consideration' (MSDTC) - as the MSD principle, with the truck travel cycle also considered. 6. `Fixed Dispatching' (FIX) - to assign trucks to fixed shovels. A system simulation model has been set up for truck dispatching system analysis. A few surface coal mines have been selected for case studies. Equipment waiting times and shift production of the system are obtained as the main outputs of the model. Simulation results show that each dispatching criterion has its own applicable range, no one can absolutely dominate the others. For example, when under-trucked, EL and MT criterion can obtain higher production than the MS criterion; when over-trucked, it is vice versa; while for MSD criteria, better results can be obtained no matter how the truck numbers fluctuate. From the view point of shovel output balance, large fluctuations occur for EL and MT criteria, while a good balance can be obtained for other criteria. In the light of dynamic change of mining system conditions, a single dispatching criterion is not necessarily reasonable. A complex dispatching criterion has been put forward to seek the complex optimum effect. Taking the advantage of each dispatching criteria, the dispatching result of a complex dispatching criterion dominates over individual dispatching criterion and a comprehensive optimum effect can be reached.

A testwork program aimed to improve the assaying of underground face samples established that for an Accelerated Cyanidation Extraction using the LeachWELLTM 60X catalyst, followed by an Aqua Regia finish (to quantify non-cyanide-extractable gold): ò Assay results (including the aqua regia finish) from a full set of samples from one underground face can be returned within four hours. ò The reagent dose to make the method simple and 'bullet-proof' is 8 gm LeachWELLTM 60X and 20 gm NaCN per 200 gm sample (30 per cent solids). Pulverising is to 90 per cent passing 75 micron (compared to the standard of 90 per cent passing 150 micron), and cyanidation is completed within one hour - however both might be further optimised. ò The LeachWELLTM/Aqua Regia results demonstrate that Fire Assays suffer from a significant nugget effect which makes the Fire Assay data relatively unreliable. ò Original costs, specific to Bannockburn (viz including an Aqua Regia finish), handling approximately 20 000 to 25 000 per annum is estimated to be $5.40, ie about one-third less than fire assaying. Optimising is further reducing these costs. It is estimated that the LeachWELLT"'/Aqua Regia assay procedure has reduced the probable error limits of any given assay of this ore from the range 0.74x to 1.36x for Fire Assay, to an appreciably smaller range of 0.90x to 1.11x. Thus for a cut-off grade of 1.60 g Au/t, samples with Fire Assays ranging up to 2.18 g Au/t have 25 per cent chance of being below cut-off, while samples with Fire Assays as low as 1.18 g Au/t have an equal chance of actually exceeding cut-off grade. This 1 g Au/t range in uncertainty is generally unacceptable for many practicalgrade/tonnage relationships. By contrast, using LeachWELLTM + Aqua Regia assays, the estimated corresponding limits are 1.44 g Au/t and 1.78 g Auk respectively - a far more tolerable 0.34 g Au/t range of uncertainty. Subsequent data has demonstrated that sufficient accuracy for grade control is achieved by Accelerated Cyanidation alone, further halving the cost of assays.

Botanical exploration has identified many plant species that naturally accumulate very high concentrations of elements, particularly heavy metals. The enormous potential applications of some of these species to remove metals from soil (phytoextraction) are slowly being realised. The discovery of hyperaccumulation has resulted in considerable research into applications for removing contaminants (phytoremediation) or more importantly, in the context of this discussion, for commercially æfarmingÆ metals (phytomining) from metal-bearing soils. Currently published phytoextraction models estimate Ni yields using Berkheya coddii (a South African nickelophyte) are approximately $US 750 ha-1, excluding the cost of processing. Research indicates that B. coddii will also accumulate significant amounts of Co, resulting in a considerable increase in the value of the crop. Modification of the substrate by acidification, fertilisation and/or chelation indicate fruitful avenues for improving this yield by increasing the extractability of the target element, elevating biomass production rates and/or rendering other contained heavy metals extractable. Plant uptake of more insoluble elements, such as Au, may be induced in many plant species using chemical compounds. These chelates applied to the soil, form soluble complexes with poorly soluble metals forcing them into the soil solution. Plants may then accumulate these metal complexes through transpiration. Research has achieved foliar Au concentrations of 78 mg kg-1 in Iberis intermedia, 56 mg kg-1 in Brassica juncea and 9 mg kg-1 in B. coddii (on a dry weight basis). Therefore in theory B. coddii could phytomine a soil containing modest concentrations of Ni, Co and Au to yield 116 kg Ni, 36 kg Co and over 6 oz Au ha-1 at a current value of $US 4000. Root crops have also shown promise in chelate assisted Au accumulation (eg 6.8 mg kg-1 in Beta vulgaris and 118.5 mg kg-1 in Raphanus sativus). Phytoextraction, in its varied applications, is rapidly coming of age as a technology having considerable potential for application in environmental science and the minerals industry. Phytotechnology employs unique plant biochemical behaviours in the rhizosphere, driven by the sunÆs energy, to seek out and concentrate low levels of heavy metals at very low cost.
