In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. Plant for the production of sulphuric acid from pyrites flotation concentrates was commissioned at Cockle Creek during 1956, to meet increasing demands for commercial acid and superphosphate. Pyrite was chosen as raw material because of the uncertain supplyposition of imported brimstone and the desirability of utilising domestic sulphur.Desulphurisation of the pyrite is performed by two 40-ton per day roasters of the Turbulent Layer type operated under licence from the Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) organisation. These units are the first of their kind commissioned in the southernhemisphere. Pyrite is fed to the roasters in the as-received un-dried condition. Waste heat steam production is coupled with electricity generation within the plant. Sulphur dioxide is produced at comparatively high strengths and cleaned by conventional cyclone and hot electro-filter equipment.The acid unit has a capacity of 100 mono tons of sulphuric acid per day and includes cooling and wash towers, mist precipitators, a single stage drying tower, 4-pass oxidation section and absorption system.INTRODUCTIONSulphuric acid has been manufactured at Cockle Creek Works since 1913, when the first chamber nitration plant was commissioned. The raw material was brimstone roasted in Herreschoff furnaces. Since that time three additional chamber units have been constructed and have produced acid from brimstone, zinc concentrates, pyrites and -spent oxide, according to changing economic and supply factors.Three chamber units are still in operation. Contact processes have become increasingly important since the first Schroder-Grillo unit was commissioned in 1923. Six of these 5-ton per day units were operating in the mid-thirties, but have since been demolished.  Broken Hills is an adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit, hosted in flow-banded rhyolites and overlying rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield. The 7.1 Ma deposit was the largest producer of gold in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield, and was one of very few economic deposits hosted in Pliocene rhyolites. This paper presents the results of a recent study in the upper levels of the deposit. Maps and cross-sections constrain structural and lithological relationships, and the lateral and vertical extent of a breccia pipe û the major feature of the upper levels.   Previous studies in the upper levels of Broken Hills have shown that gold and silver values are concentrated around and within a large breccia pipe, mined by a series of æcaveÆ stopes and in veins. Contour diagrams of Au-Ag data from channel samples indicate that the breccia pipe was a major fluid channel-way for mineralising solutions.   The breccia pipe deposits are part of the dynamic geothermal system that formed the Broken Hills ore bodies; they developed as a result of hydrothermal brecciation in areas of structural weakness within a rhyolite pyroclastic unit that overlies a massive rhyolite lava-flow unit. The main breccia pipe begins near the rhyolite/pyroclastic contact, having the shape of an inverted, inclined cone, and consists of silicified breccia, stringers of quartz, and irregular patches of clay-altered country rock. Smaller zones or pockets of hydrothermal eruption breccia are silicified and contain low grade gold in the matrix and in the adjacent silicified wall rocks.   Quartz has been classified according to its physical characteristics as seen in situ and hand specimens indicate that vein definition decreases upwards, perhaps as a result of changing lithological conditions and/or increasing proximity to the paleosurface. Hydrothermal quartz is widespread as veins and as a replacement mineral, or lining fractures and cavities and overgrowing rock fragments. Breccias contain vein quartz, but some quartz veins cross-cut breccias, indicating that vein and breccia formation was relatively synchronous and overlapped in time.   Disseminated gold-silver mineralisation is associated with vein quartz and silicic alteration of the wall rock within the breccia pipe. The auriferous zones are highly irregular and erratic, and sampling results show a wide range of gold-silver ratios, suggesting that highly volatile physiochemical conditions prevailed during mineralisation.

The reactions between molten aluminium and cryoIite have been determined from a material balance of all components involved in the process. The interpretation of results were supported by x-ray diffraction studies of the evolved vapours, quenched electrolyte samples, and side-reaction products.The most important reaction involves the formation of both Na2F (sodium subfluoride) and chiolite in the fused electrolyte. The Na2F accelerates vaporization of the melt. Some AIF (aluminium monofluoride) may also be formed but the proportion of this is much less than for the former subvalent compound.

It is now five years since the advent of gold-dredging in Australia, the State of New South 'Wales, or colony as it was, being the first to adopt this system of gold-getting, and the credit of its introduction rests with a member of this Institute, Mr. Chas. L. Garland, who commenced operations with his dredge on the Macquarie River, at the junction of the Muckerawa Creek, in the month of March, 1899. In this paper it is intended to give a brief history of the career of the gold dredge in New South Wales from that relate up to the present time, during which period the writer, as a designer of many dredges, has been constantly in touch with the subject in all its phases in this State; the points noted are the outcome of his observation in a general way, and to a great extent are apart from the design proper.Gold-dredging in New South Wales up to the present moment can hardly be designated an unqualified success...

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.

LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of "Cyanidation," by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. It has been more especially in these large low grade ore bodies, that modern methods have been benefical; for small lodes must be rich to pay at all, as they cannot be worked on the same gigantic scale, but even in these a percentage of metal is saved which formerly was absolutely lost.To make these large deposits remunerative it is, however necessary to try and find the point of greatest economic advantage, to handle the ore in vast quantities, to erect huge plats to treat it, to substitute automatic appliances for hand labour as far as possible, and to combine several processes supplementary to one another, so that ore which is not amenable to one process, shall be saved, by another; and by doing...

IN this paper it is proposed to present certain features of operating practice at the Port Pirie works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, in the smelting in a blast furnace of lead ores carrying a high concentration of zinc.The subject matter selected for presentation is:(i) The effect of zinc on lead blast-furnace operations, together with an outline of the methods adopted in actual practice in dealing with the zinc problem.(2) Development of the height of tuyere above the bottom of the jacket, and the extension of the tapping interval and the combined effect of both factors upon the lead content of blast furnace slag.It will later be seen that one phase of the investigation carried out in connection with the effect of zinc on blast-furnace operations was largely responsible for the decision to increase to a marked degree the height of the tuyere above the bottom of the jacket.Due to this interdependence, it has been considered advisable to deal with the two features above mentioned.The high concentration of zinc in the lead-bearing materials smelted at Port Pirie has brought with it those troubles which are associated with zinc in the smelting operation.In the early stages of the history of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. the trend towards increasing cost for labour, fuel, and stores, etc., rendered it necessary to increase the lead content of the charge, and reduce to a minimum the quantity of barren flux used.

The Reefton Goldfield on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand was a significant gold producing area between 1860 and 1951. During this period it produced approximately 2.1 million ounces (67 tonnes) of gold. The largest single producer on the goldfield and the deepest mine in New Zealand, was the Blackwater Mine at Waiuta which produced 21 tonnes of gold. The Prolubition Shaft reached a depth of 878 metres (317 metres below sea level). The mine closed suddenly in 1951 with about 66 000 tonnes of are remaining in the stapes. Since closure there has been no attempt to determine the ore potential of the mine at depth. This paper summarises the geology, history and resource potential of the mine and sets out two options for evaluating the remaining resource. The options are either deep drilling from surface or recovery of the Prohibition Shaft and underground development and drilling. A schedule for each option is presented and discussed.

This paper reviews the changes in the coal industry over the past 30 years and attempts to predict the trends over the next ten years. The last 30 years have seen a steady concentration of production into fewer, larger mines, which operate on 3: more continuous basis, and a major increase in productivity per employee. Coal exports have increased from zero to almost half the country's total production. As well as major changes in exploration and mining equipment and the increasing use of computer tools, the industry now operates in a relatively new regulatory and commercial environment.   Safety legislation now requires the writing and enforcement of policies and procedures by the mining companies, rather than adherence to inflexible regulations enforced by an Inspector. Accident rates have decreased dramatically. The transition from coal mining licences to permits, requiring landowner consent and resource consents, is well under way. Environmental controls are now an essential aspect of the industry.   Equipment suppliers now offer maintenance services, production guarantees and flexible financing.  Contract miners offer mine design and restoration as part of the contract. In a similar approach, Solid Energy now offer an ash disposal service and assistance with resource consents to their customers as well as investment in technology to ensure a consistent product to demanding specifications. Solid Energy has proposals for energy centres which install and operate the coal burning appliances and simply sell energy to the customers. The next 10 years should see an intensification of these trends of bigger mines, more exports and greater technology and a 'package' approach to customer service.

The Telfer main dome open pit is operated by Newcrest Mining Limited at a current production rate of 50 Mt/a from a pit dimension compromising 2 km strike length, 1 km width and 250 m depth. As part of the refeasibility of the Telfer operation undertaken early this decade, Newcrest identified that an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation along with an increased scale of open pit would support a new plant targeting the processing of gold and copper ore at 17 Mt/a rates. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 and broke into the open pit in late 2009. This situation is unique across the mining industry where a cave breakthrough was planned and occurred within an active large open pit operation. The SLC broke though into the west side of the Main Dome open pit into a specially prepared bench that was left at the 5384 RL of cut-back stage 3. A main haulage ramp is within 100 m from the edge of the cave breakthrough zone and this ramp passes down to the active levels which are progressing toward the 5200 RL. This paper presents insight into the mine planning and risk management associated with continued operation of the open pit operation while an active SLC breaks through. The cave breakthrough presents unique areas for risk management as there is potential for rapid propagation and subsidence. To support the undertaking, mine design and major hazard management planning has been carried out. Focus areas include; dual ramp system design, preloading the breakthrough area, monitoring of cave propagation and air gap using a seismic system and deep hole extensometers, wall stability and subsidence monitoring using radar and prism systems, and key trigger and response planning.

The Grey River dredge is the first large scale alluvial operation to be permitted under the Mining Act 1971 and the Water and Soil Conservation Act 1967. The experience of Grey River Gold MiningLimited in pursuing these statutory approvals has identified weaknesses and strengths in the present system and problems which need to be resolved. The Company has learnt lessons, which if heeded, will assist future large scale alluvial mining projects.

The Khanong supergene-enriched copper resource, (~23 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu), is one of several resources recently discovered in the intrusive-centred, sediment-hosted Au-Cu Sepon mineral field located in southern Lao PDR. The unusual style of hypogene mineralisation and unique set of conditions have resulted in the development and preservation of a supergene-enriched profile in this subtropical climate. Hypogene sulphide-rich mineralisation replaced calcareous cataclastite (fault rock) developed in the flat-lying, extensional, Khanong Fault. Spatially, the hypogene mineralisation was immediately out board of the skarn û hornfels Cu-Bi front and in board of sediment hosted Au-(As-Sb) mineralisation in a zoned intrusive-centred hydrothermal system. In situ supergene enrichment of the sulphide protore has resulted in a high-grade chalcocite-clay zone (~10.3 Mt at 4.6 per cent Cu) overlain by leached limonite-clay. A very high-grade in situ to exotic limonite-clay Cu-oxide-mineral zone is locally developed above impermeable dolomite at the base of chalcocite-clay zone. Exotic Cu-Mn-wad mineralisation developed for up to 1 km down the hydraulic gradient from the chalcocite-clay zone. Unique supergene enrichment conditions have resulted in the high-grade Khanong Cu resource in a subtropical weathering environment. The base of the currently active supergene profile coincides with the base of a flat-lying, pyrite-rich fault rock, dipping parallel to the hill slope, maximising Cu enrichment. Meteoric water has been channelled along subvertical faults and narrow horizontal subsurface zones. Low permeability of the fault host rock and footwall rocks has controlled the low volume and slow movement of groundwater required for supergene enrichment. Erosion has been slowed by the resistive ironstone and limonite-clay layer at surface, which assists in preserving the gentle slope over the chalcocite-clay zone.

Controlling unwanted ground movement is critical in mining as well as many other highly hazardous environments, such as construction and tunnelling. Sharing knowledge about effective hazard management is paramount to improving health and safety and operational outcomes across industries, and some industry sectors have embraced this openness as part of the way that they do business. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program funded the RISKGATE project to build a body of knowledge for managing a broad range of hazards across mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure within a mine-life or product life cycle perspective (eg from exploration through to decommissioning, or design through to operation). The RISKGATE body of knowledge was assembled from Australian coal industry experts through a semi-structured bowtie analysis-based action research workshop cycle. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE serves to provide a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper presents an overview of RISKGATE topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, ground control open cut, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, tailings dams and inrush) with a summary of individual topic structures, as well as showing the contrasts and inter-relationships between these ground management topics. In mining industries, materials loading and handling costs represent a significant component of the total (capital and operation) costs. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading and haulage system with the lowest total cost. The optimal size and number of equipment calculation are very important task for mining engineering because loading and haulage equipment are major proportion of open pit mining cost. Capital and operating cost are considered in objective function with respect to interest rate, insurance and tax in non-linear form. Shovel and truck annual productivity constraint, fleet matching constraint and number of truck per shovel constraint are incorporated in this optimisation problem with continuous variables. This formulation will yield total cost minimisation per hour and good accuracy compared to previous methods.

A zinc-lead-iron sulphide concentrate from McArthur River can be leached at atmospheric pressure in aqueous solutions with HCI, FeCl3, CuCI2, HCl/02 HC1/02/ CuCI2, Cl2, and CI2/CuCI2 to extract >98 per cent zinc, >90 per cent silver, and <15 per cent iron in 1-7 h at 95°. Galena is more reactive than sphalerite and is converted to lead chloride. Except for leaching with HCI, elemental sulphur is the the main by-product of the leach with little or no sulphate ion detected. The rates and products of these reactions are compared. It is recommended that aqueous slurries of the concentrate (50 per cent w/v) are leached at atmospheric pressure with Cl2 in the presence of copper(II) chloride, which accelerates the extraction of zinc. Hydrochloric acid is a by-product which is consumed bYJeaction with fresh concentrate in air at 60°. Copper is subsequently stripped from the leach solution and recycled by reaction with fresh concentrate at 100°. The separation, recovery, and electrolysis of zinc and lead chloride is outlined since this process would produce Cl2 gas which can be recycled and used directly in the leaching stage.
