Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.

From the ventilation aspect, there is a basic difference between advancing and ezreating longwall layouts. Particular rroblems with retreating, using differing mining methods and layouts include high gas emissions, spontaneous combustion and -radients. There is an acceptable method of crntrolling the environment at the return end a retreating longwall face without the use a multiple heading system. Incorporated in the design is the facility to practice xtensive methane drainage, thus ensuring a ntrol of the rate of methane emission into the main roadways. Wind blast is the sudden movement of air displaced by the massive collapse of roof rock in underground openings and is experienced as a high velocity flow of air through adjacent workings. The initial flow in the outbye direction is often followed by 'suck back', that is a reverse flow of air towards the newly created void. As part of the Wind Blast Project, undertaken by The University of New South Wales, Department of Mining Engineering, a physical model was constructed. One of the functions of the laboratory wind blast model is to provide insight into the dynamics of the interaction between the falling strata and the air being compressed below. During a collapse, some air is expelled into the surrounding roadways while the remainder penetrates towards the top of the roof elements. In this paper two aspects of the rock mass properties which influence the phenomenon are considered: - Flow paths through the falling roof element, ie the permeability of the roof element; - Bed separation prior to the fall which introduces a void above the roof element. A series of tests was carried out utilising the physical model in order to investigate the relationships between the flow of air through the simulated roadways, the variations in gauge pressure above and below the falling roof element, and the acceleration and terminal velocity of the latter, all as a function of the flow paths through the roof element and of the extent of the void above. The results of comprehensive tests using the wind blast physical model suggested that the time history of outbye air flow in the simulated roadway comprises two distinct phases. a) A primary phase, characterised by a high velocity flow of air which exhibits a peak and corresponds to the period during which the roof element is accelerating. The peak air velocity is related to the acceleration of the roof element. b) A secondary phase, characterised by a residual air flow of a lesser velocity than in the primary phase and corresponding to the period during which the roof element is falling at its terminal velocity. The velocity of the residual air flow is directly proportional to the terminal velocity of the roof element. In a monolithic collapse of a roof element it was shown that the presence of flow paths in the roof element increased the air velocity in the roadway in both the primary and the secondary phases. The presence of an air-filled void above the roof element, on the other hand, influenced the air velocity only in the primary phase by increasing the peak air velocity. The overall duration of the process was however decreased as a result. 'plug type' collapses, where roof failure extends to the ground surface, potentially generate the highest peak air velocities likely to be encountered during wind blasts.

During the last 12 years the dominant theme at Mount Isa has been production expansion. Production rate of 3,200 tons per mine day in 1953 increased to 11,000 tons per mine day in 1960, completing the first stage of the programme. The second stage is still in progress. It is planned to increase production of lead and copper ores to 19,500 tons per mine day in 1968.Current mine workings comprise an area 2 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, the deepest production level being 2,000 ft below surface. During the next 10 years it is anticipated that mining will be carried out to a depthof 3,200 ft below the surface. The rapid extension of the mine has necessitated frequent re-appraisals and modifications to the primary ventilation system, and a system with considerable in-built flexibility has gradually evolved. Since 1953, volume circulation has increased eight-fold to approximately 2,400,000 c.f.m.To suit various mine operating requirements, a combined pressure-exhaust system of ventilation was adopted.The usefulness of this system is at a maximum when the fans installed permit ready changes in the location of the boundary between adjacent spheres of fan influence.Air flow through openings to the surface can be controlled or used as required. This feature is considered necessary for a mine where underground workings are comparatively shallow and caving to the surface willoccur.A major heat problem exists due to climate conditions, high geothermic gradient (one degree Fahrenheit in 95 ft), and oxidation in leached and brecciated areas.Because of this, quantities of air far in excess of the minimum requirements for dust removal are required to ensure satisfactory environmental conditions. In assessing fan pressure, consideration was given to 1. the mine resistance, and the requirement for pressure differential capability,2. the pressure requirement for deeper mining, with due allowance for booster fan use where appropriate,and3. the desire to avoid fan operation at pressure duties above the region of peak fan efficiency.The latter feature provides a safety margin between maximum operating pressure and the stall point of the fan.

Current low prices for many metals mean that deposits have to be mined at high cut-offs (relative to their mean grade), which means that only a small percentage of mining blocks are above cut-off. Worse, at such high cut-offs, the blocks above cut-off are usually not grouped into convenient clumps for mining; they tend to be split into small isolated patches that are difficult to reach and hence expensive to extract. Companies wishing to acquire mineral properties have to be able to work out quickly what percentage of blocks are above cut-off and what can effectively be mined given the mining method envisaged. Moreover they need this information within a relatively short-time. The work presented here relates to typical South African gold mines (ie tabular orebodies) but the long-term objective is to develop tools for quantifying the impact of reserve breakup at high cut-offs for a wide range of underground mines including those that are not tabular. The mining method and the sampling procedure determine whether ore blocks can effectively be located and extracted economically. This project studied the impact of these two factors on the recoverable reserves for Witwatersrand gold mines. In order to be repeatable, the tests were done on numerical models of the deposit obtained by geostatistical simulations. To ensure realism, the orebody model and the mining scenarios were based on a specific mine. The recoverable reserves (ore tonnage above cut-off, the corresponding metal quantity and the average grade) were calculated for a wide range of cut-offs for four mining scenarios, as well as for the base case of free selection: ò Scenario 1: Blocks are taken if their true grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline (no information effect, no marginal blocks). ò Scenario 2: In addition to the accessible pay blocks, adjoining marginal blocks are taken (no information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Scenario 3: Blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline. Here the estimator is the average of the face samples (information effect, no marginal blocks): ò Scenario 4: Accessible pay blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off. Adjoining marginal blocksare also taken (information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Free selection: All blocks whose true grade is above cut-off are taken irrespective of their accessibility. The results can be presented in different ways, for example by plotting ore tonnage above cut-off versus cut-off grade, or metal tonnage above cut-off versus cut-off grade etc. As expected, this shows the hierarchy between the five scenarios from the free selection base case to scenario No 2 (true accumulations, pay +

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. A new leaching regime was implemented at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MinesÆ (KCGM) Gidji plant on a cyanide leach of ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate. High lime concentration and lead nitrate were used to overcome the refractoriness of the fine sulfides (high reactivity of fine sulfides with the presence of gold tellurides). The leach pretreatment stage was shown to be detrimental and was shut down. Lime titration was introduced as part of the process control. It was shown that the leach could be performed at low dissolved oxygen, (ie 3 - 5 ppm) to avoid sulfide oxidation and the associated high cyanide and lime consumption. Plant results showed reduced cyanide consumption (40 per cent) and an accelerated leaching rate, whereby most of the gold was dissolved in 24 hours compared to 72 hours used previously. Similar work was performed at KCGMÆs Fimiston plant, which leached a combined ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate along with the slimes fraction from hydrocycloning the bulk flotation concentrate. The use of lead nitrate, high lime and carbon-in-leach generated a faster leaching rate and minimised adsorption of gold on fine pyrite particles. The grind, previously controlled with a P80, was replaced by a P98 to give a better operational indication of top size hydrocyclone performance. Before the implementation of the changes, average leach residues for slimes and UFG were respectively 4.0 g/t and 5.5 g/t. With the modifications to the leaching regime, average leach residues were lower by 1.5 - 2.0 g/t. Whilst significant improvements have been demonstrated, further work is progressing at KCGM to further reduce ultra-fine concentrate leach tail grades, and also to improve the understanding of concentrate refractoriness and the factors responsible for differences between laboratory and plant leach results. Estimated profits since the implementation of the new approach are in the range of $A3.5 million per year.

To compare open circuit lead primary rougher results at Mount Isa Mines Ltd., eleven surveys were made over five weeks of plant operation with varying ore sources, including a specially hauled sample of 100% Black Star ore. Three of the surveys which represented extremes in performance were selected for sizing, cyclosizing and assaying for lead, zinc and iron. A comparison of the flotation kinetics has revealed the similarities (including common problems) and differences for the surveyed ores. The concepts of entrainment and collectorless flotability are used to aid interpretation of the kinetic data.

Mineral sands are different to almost any other commodity; however, it shares similarities with other commodity types, such as the importance of quality constraints of iron ore and coal or the importance of physical properties of diamonds. The mineral sands industry consists of two principal product streams; titanium dioxide minerals û in the form of rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene, and zircon. The principal valuable heavy minerals (VHM) include ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon. Variations of other titanium minerals occur between the end members of ilmenite and rutile, including pseudo rutile and anatase. Most mineral sands deposits are found in unconsolidated fossil shorelines several hundreds of metres to tens of kilometres and occasionally hundreds of kilometres inland from the present coastline. Mineral sands orebodies essentially fall into two categories based on the mode of deposition: alluvial or aeolian. Alluvial deposits are further split into marine beach placers (or strandlines) and lacustrine heavy mineral (HM) accumulations. Exploration for mineral sands involves the positive identification of key criteria leading to the focus of exploratory surface sampling, augering and drilling. Assaying is primarily focused around determining the percentage of HM contained within a given sample. Other results of interest include clay fines, sand and oversize. Metallurgical/mineralogical assessment is often undertaken via laboratory scale bench tests that replicate the wet concentration and dry mill processing routes. The most critical component in resource assessment for mineral sands is about quantifying HM grade, then mineralogical assemblage and then quality of those mineral species. This will determine whether a mineral sand final product is marketable or not. Mining of mineral sands is conducted either wet or dry. Wet methods are generally preferred for large tonnage, unconsolidated and low clay orebodies. Where ground conditions are hard and orebodies are small, high grade and discontinuous, dry mining techniques are generally employed. Concentration of mineral sands from the primary ore is carried out in two sections; wet, utilising sizing and gravity differentiation between HM, VHM, clay and quartz, and dry, exploiting the magnetic, electrostatic and to a lesser extent specific gravity (SG) properties of the minerals of interest. Mineral sands exploration, mining and processing faces the same operating challenges as the rest of the resource sector. Added to this are the issues that are unique to mineral sands and to which the industry devotes considerable resources to developing solutions.

Two versions of a radiometric-type caliper for measuring borehole diameter are described. One, based on the bow-spring principle, is suitable for percussion (exploration) drill holes. The other, which utilizes hemispherical wall contactors actuated by springs, is suitable for blast holes. Both utilize low-power radioactive sources and employ a scintillation detector to measure the "inverse-square law" response of the device to changes in borehole radius. The performance of the device is examined and examples of its use are illustrated.

This paper explores options worthy of consideration in the management of S02 produced from the gold roasting operations at Kalgoorlie. Some of the options have relevance to other sources of SO2 in the region, eminating from nickel smelting operations. The paper considers the following options: 1. Capture of SO2 within the roaster where sulphur-containing reaction products are mixed with the calcine. 2. Processes in which the sulphur-containing products are bled separately from the stack for further treatment or for dumping as a waste. These include: Seawater-based scrubbing of SO2; Sulphuric acid manufacture as a feedstock for fertiliser production or for leaching of bauxite; its use as Caro's acid: and the production of value-added sulphur-containing reagents eg liquid S02 and sulphonic acid.

The incidence of colliery disasters has highlighted the need for more centralised and directed coal mining safety research in Queensland, with particular impetus from explosions at Box Flat in 1972, Kianga in 1975 and Moura No 4 in 1986. Inquiries which identified the likely causes recommended measures and, research and two outcomes have been the present Mines Safety Research Advisory Committee and The Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station at Redbank, near Brisbane, dealing with all mining problems, coal and metalliferous. Already, important research into ignition and explosion and other health and safety matters has been accomplished; the Station has become an accredited testing laboratory; and international recognition has been achieved. Now the advisory, testing and research arms are soundly in place to pursue preventive investigations and be ready to provide assistance in any emergencies.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced Normally.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

Increasing use has been made of engineer ing geology and hydrogeology in the development of the infrastructure for mining projects. The Geological Survey of the Department of Mines, the Department of Main Roads, the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission and private consulting organisations and mining companies, employ spec- ialist staff to carry out engineering geological and/or hydrogeological investigations. Such in- vestigations have been of assistance in recent mining developments in northern Queensland, in- cluding those in the Cloncurry - Mount lsa, Weipa, Greenvale and northern Borten Basin areas.

Pbo activities have been measured in conventional blast furnace and direct smelting type slags at 1200¦C. Much higher activity coefficients than previously measured have been obtained and attributed to interactions between iron and lead oxides. The behaviour of PbO in the two types of slag reflects their relative silica contents. Simple equations derived from mathematical modelling work are presented for the prediction of Pbo activities in complex industrial slags.

Automatic sampling and weighing of copper sulphide concentrate produced on Bougainville Island (PNG) is described. Contained metal weights gave satisfactory agreement with buyer's results after the introduction of polyethylene lined sealed aluminium foil bags for transport and storage of assay samples. Paper bags used previously for this purpose permitted oxidation of the sulphide concentrate and thus caused lower assay values.
