The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

Experimentally determined and theoretically explained phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rock around the development working brings about the radical changes in existing ideas about the mechanism of interaction rock massive with engineering constructions.The essence of the phenomenon consists in the fact, that forming of non-elastic deformations zone goes on by way of more intensive deformation and destruction of rock simultaneously in several zones, covering partially or fully output circuit and divided by zones of destructed rock. Under the influence of change of massive strained-deformational condition of depositional rock an accidental deviation of zones of supplementary expansion and compression of rock from the previous positions take place. One can observe multiplicational change of the outline, size and form of all disintegration zones in the time within the area of the working influence at massive. This phenomenon was named "fluctuation of zonal disintegration of sedimentary rock around development working".

The primary objective of mining companies is to function as a profitable business by delivering products that fit customer requirements in a safe and sustainable manner. Optimum resource utilisation is a critical focus area to achieve this objective, and the long-term sustainable business performance of a mining company is determined by the extent to which this is achieved. Technology improvements and/or new technology development could improve resource utilisation. However, adding new projects to a Brownfield operation carries risk. Overall project schedules, tie-in schedules and safety risks normally receive adequate attention, but the introduction and integration of new technology to a Brownfield site also carries the significant risk of failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). This risk must be addressed via rigorous design phase risk assessments and piloting. Post commissioning, the effective metallurgical integration of any new technology/circuit/process plant into an existing process plant calls for critical assessment, through circuit performance testing, and optimisation to ensure alignment with design criteria. In addition, this approach provides clear focus areas for further optimisation of the new plant and additional opportunity for overall plant optimisation. Roy Hill recently navigated this process successfully, and this paper provides feedback on the journey that led to improved resource utilisation.

This paper describes the results of VLF-EM test surveys, using the Ronka EM-16 equipment, over a selection of environments in Australia and Papua.Using comparisons with known geology, drilling information and other geophysical work it is shown that the maximum depth of penetration of the method is about 100 ft but is considerably less than this in most areas.The author believes the method could aid in geological mapping and provide a useful adjunct to aeromagnetic surveying in some areas.

Globally, private minerals companies considering the transition to a public company and entrepreneurs looking to create a new public company through, for example, an initial public offering or by a reverse takeover have many options. For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. It was found that inclusion of other available information, such as ore composition, train/rake assays and recent rainfall at port and mine, did not add to the predictive power of the model.CITATION:Everett, J E, Linden, D and Maney, P, 2013. Coals from the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales treated in the Port Kembla coal preparation plants of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. differ supstantially in their characteristics. Knpwledge of performance not only enables comparison and promotes better control, but also provides the means for predicting results.Evaluation of performance of cleaning equipment has been made in terms of probable error (Ep). Results for Baum jigs, a Chance cone, heavy medium cyclones, and water washing cyclones were examined. The efficiency factors derived from the probable error were applied to the float and sink analysis, mathematically simulating operating conditions. This method was applied to the Balgownie seam.The Balgownie seam lies between the Bulli and Wongawilli seams in the coal measures of the South Coast and mining on a large scale began recently in the Bulli area. It is known locally as the Four Foot seam and exhibits rather difficult washability characteristics, due to a comparatively high middlings content. These properties and the relatively high inherent ash make careful selection of cleaning equipment essential for optimum recovery. The prediction technique is used to determine the possible results when this coal is cleaned in the Port Kembla plants. Predicted values are compared with results from full scale trial washings demonstrating the validity and accuracy of the technique.Applications of result forecasting are listed.

Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

In 2013, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) produced 251 Mt from 15 mines in Western Australia. Throughout the mines, Ore Reserve models are used for long-term and medium-term mine planning. Grade control data aids the accuracy of short-term planning. Reconciliation of models with grade control data is important for maintaining confidence in predictions from the models, understanding the limitations of the models, and identifying issues that may require further work.There are a large number of sites and models, with more than 200 professionals involved in different parts of the reconciliation process. Regular meetings of all involved and enabling effective communication are important in the reconciliation process.Reconciliation data is gathered and processed through a web-based system; Grade Block Reconciliation System. This system cuts each grade block against the required model, stores the results, and allows users to view and analyse the data. Development of this system has occurred over a number of years and all Rio Tinto Iron Ore mine geologists and resource geologists now use it as standard to report reconciliation results. The results can be viewed in many ways including by different time periods or benches. Graphing the results assists identification of trends. Centralising and standardising reconciliation has allowed easier comparison between sites. Flexibility in the system allows users to customise reports to manage issues unique to their particular site.In parallel with system development, substantial effort has been put into ensuring mining professionals get together to discuss and understand reconciliation issues. To facilitate this there are now regular sessions, including site visits. Issues are assessed on a case-by-case basis and decisions on how best to address the issues are made by the relevant stakeholders. In formulating its strategic plan in 1998 the New Zealand Minerals Industry identified two related critical issues facing it. These are, broadly speaking, the issues of access to minerals; and the perception the public has towards the industry and its behaviour towards the environment. This presentation will report on the Industry's response to the public perception issue. The Industry has, through the NZMIA Council, and its Communication and Website Committees, developed and implemented strategies covering: communication through the print media, and through its website www.minerals.co.nz, a long-term educational outreach programme with schools, focussing on the significance of minerals, their contribution to community wellbeing and the negligible long-term environmental effects of the Industry's activities.

The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria employs bacterial oxidation (BIOX« Process) to liberate gold from its flotation concentrate. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation even with fine grinding. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. While the oxidation process is very effective, it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold can become suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. This paper discusses investigations into the causes of the loss and also describes the successful use of quebracho tannin in reducing colloidal gold loss. Laboratory and subsequent plant trials, showed a gain of 2.6 per cent in overall gold recovery based on mill feed and waste stream data.

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.

Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

Sulphuric acid leaching at atmospheric pressure of a number of Australian nickeliferous laterites was examined in detail. The results obtained indicate that nickel can be extracted from these ores, although the conditions required to achieve about 90 per cent extraction vary widely. These differences in reactivity can be related to the types of nickel-bearing minerals present.Nickel is more readily extracted from nickel-bearing clays such as chlorite, than it is from nickel-containing goethite.The results clearly show the problems associated with the processing of complex ores such as the nickeliferous laterites, and they indicate the need for complete characterization of each deposit.

Separation of Nickel and Cobalt from Manganese, Magnesium and Calcium by Synergistic Solvent Extraction - From Batch Tests to Pilot Plant Operation The synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of Versatic 10/LIX63/TBP was used for the separation and purification of nickel and cobalt from synthetic laterite leach solution after iron removal. Very encouraging results were obtained for separating nickel and cobalt from manganese, magnesium and calcium. In batch tests, the organic composition of the synergistic system was optimised and very large synergistic shifts for nickel and cobalt were observed. The ?pH50(Mn-Co) and ?pH50(Mn-Ni) values were as large as 1.65 and 2.40, respectively. The extraction and stripping kinetics of nickel and cobalt was fast. Semi continuous extraction tests were conducted with a pH profile of 5.5/6.1/6.5 in three stages at 40¦C. The nickel and cobalt extractions reached 99.9 per cent with only 5 mg/L Ni and <1 mg/L Co left in the raffinate. With two stages of scrubbing, only 2 mg/L Mn and less than 1 mg/L Mg and Ca were left in the scrubbed organic solution. With two stripping stages, the stripping efficiencies of Ni and Co reached over 95 per cent. A fully continuous pilot plant operation was conducted successfully for 280 hours. With an O/A ratio of about 2 and a pH profile of 5.5/5.8/6.0/6.3 for the four stages EX1/EX2/Ex3/EX4, both nickel and cobalt were almost completely extracted. Using a pH profile of 5.4/5.0 for SC1/SC2, the manganese scrubbing efficiency was over 96 per cent. Using three strip stages, over 98 per cent Ni and 99 per cent Co were stripped with only 64 mg/L Ni in the stripped organic solution. The nickel concentration in the loaded strip liquor reached 83 g/L, resulting in a ?Ni of over 28 g/L. The chemical stability of the system was also assessed over 12 weeks under proposed industrial operating conditions. Operation exclusively under strip conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in LIX63 oxime half lives of 1.1 and 2.1 years, respectively. Operation exclusively under extract conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in oxime half lives of 0.26 and 0.82 years, respectively. Losses of Versatic 10 were less than four per cent.

Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

Statistical metallurgical plant trials are becoming more widespread, as a valuable tool for increasing plant profitability. Generally, a single parameter like metal recovery varies under the trial condition while all other variables such as average metal feed grade or average metal concentrate grade are equal for the two test conditions during the period of the test. Metal recovery is usually the measured variable because concentrate grade is fixed by smelter terms, and plants operate to maximise recovery at the required concentrate grade. However, in all flotation plants there is a relationship between concentrate grade and metal recovery, and under the same conditions increasing one results in a decrease in the other. At MMGÆs Rosebery Mine the zinc concentrate produced is generally above smelter specifications, so zinc concentrate grade can vary during a test. During trialling of magnetic conditioning in the Rosebery zinc circuit, the difference in both zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade were analysed. The analysis of changes in zinc grade and recovery during the trial raised some interesting questions about the relationship between concentrate grade and recovery. A paired statistical method was developed and tested to combine in each pair the change in concentrate grade and recovery in a single result that could be analysed by a paired t test. This method was found to be very sensitive to combined, varying changes in concentrate grade and/or metal recovery.
