FROM almost every point of view, petroleum was "strategic mineral number one" during the World War that ended in 1945. Even the spectacular advent of the atomic bomb in the final days of the conflict did not displace it from its position of prime importance, although within a few years uranium will almost certainly be the "number one" material in the minds of military strategists, if it is not even now in that position. But both as fuel and as raw material for chemical industries, petroleum will hold the center of the stage for many years to come. Hardly any other substance illustrates so fully the manner in which science and technology may be combined to achieve the utmost success in contributing to human efficiency and comfort. WHEN, in April, 1892, the writer began experimenting with the cyanide-process, it had already proved a success in the treatment of tailings, but had not become an important factor as a primary method of ore-treatment. The Livingston, Colorado, mill was running a few small agitators; the Mercur mill, in Utah, was said to be a success, but was " closed down to increase capacity; " and Mr. A. B. Paul, in Shasta county, California, was running ore'through a stamp-mill into leachingvats, using a weak cyanide solution in the battery. Mills had been, or were being, erected in Arizona; on the Comstock lode; and in South Dakota. Some of these never started, and several were shut down or remodelled for other processes. Altogether, the outlook was anything but favorable. Many of these mills were planned to make use of agits tion, and a cyanide solution containing at least 1 per cent. of potassium cyanide was employed. Since then the improvement of the process, both chemically and mechanically, has placed it among the recognized successful methods of oretreatment. Within the past year I have visited a large number of cyanide-mills, and have collected considerable data, of which I publish enough herewith to give an idea of the development of the process and of the methods followed in the principal mills. TEN years ago, October, 1914, the author had the privilege of giving an-illustrated address on investigations of coal-dust explosions1 to this Institute at one session of its fall meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa. On the following day, the members had the opportunity of seeing a large-scale explosion test at the Experimental Mine near Bruceton, in which the explosion was made to follow a predetermined path by means of rock-dust barriers of various types, which had prevented the explosive waves from reaching the outlets of, the mine by the shortest paths.2 There was also shown a "home-made rock-dusting machine discharging the dust from a flexible nozzle, and a cement gun operated for the quick erection of a fire or ventilation stopping, such as might be put up after an explosion. Following that paper, there was presented a paper by J. Taffanel, Director of the Lievin testing station in the Pas de Calais, which reviewed the French coal-dust investigations.3 Another important paper was by Howard N. Eavenson, on Coal-mine Explosions Caused by Gas or Dust.4 This paper contains complete lists of explosions that occurred in North America and Great Britain, from early in the 19th century to 1912; in France to 1903, and in Belgium to 1909. No one can look over these lists without being struck by the great number of explosions and the, appalling aggregate of lives lost by them. Although they still happen, we-are hopeful that we have entered on a happier period of freedom from these dreaded visitations, as the result of great increase in knowledge; of the causes and means of prevention. Looking back over coal-dust investigations, there appear to have been periods of advance and of stagnation.

The paper reports the development of a large, slow speed ball mill closed circuited with a hvdro-scillator. This increased grinding efficiency 28 pct over conventional units. AS the title indicates, this is a progress report for the first year of experimental operation of a relatively large diameter, slow speed ball mill with 1-in. balls, with and without various classifiers, and including a hydroscillator. Several years ago the authors came to the conclusion that if any further progress were to be made in our flotation process, an understanding of the chemical and physical reactions and the control thereof, in the grinding circuit, was essential. It may be stated, at this point, that the preparation of a correct feed for the flotation process is still the number one objective of our grinding studies. This progress report deals with grinding "per se," and not with the chemical and physical reactions as the result of grinding. Prior to this time we had taken the naive position, that since grinding had been practiced by the industry for some fifty years or more, it had been well exploited and developed by a host of investigators. Consequently, we had given the matter only superficial attention. At the start of our study, we were aware of the fact that some difference in opinion existed, but we were not prepared for the controversial evidence that developed nor for the extent to which the experts differed in their viewpoints. There seemed nothing else to do but to tour the continent and decide for ourselves what was right and what was wrong, read all the published literature and visit with anyone who had ideas about the matter. This we did over the next few ensuing years. Since our study has met with some measure of success, we report, herewith, these data that ultimately they may be of help to other investigators. In 1944 it became necessary to increase our grinding capacity and at the same time to grind the sulphide portion a little finer. This provided the impetus to put our ideas into effect. As has been previously described, our grinding flowsheet at that time consisted of a 6x12 rod mill, followed by two 5x10 ft, and one 6x12 ft trunnion overflow ball mills, with conventional rake classifiers. Naturally, we first considered all the possibilities of altering or adding to the existing equipment. It became evident that if any appreciable increase in grinding efficiency could be obtained, it would pay to scrap the existing small mills and classifiers and install one big mill with adequate classification. In the short time allotted to me* I can only hope to present to you a brief sketch of the main geological features of the country which you are about to visit. My remarks must, of necessity, be more or less incomplete, as my desire is not so much to elucidate any special problem connected with the many interesting geological questions to be found here, as rather to offer such a general view of the region as will enable you, during your five days' trip through the Park, to understand clearly something of its physical geography and geology. The Yellowstone Park is situated in the extreme northwestern portion of the Territory of Wyoming. Its boundaries, as determined by the original Act of Congress setting apart the Park, are very ill-defined. At the time of the enactment of the law establishing this national reservation, the region had been but little explored, and its relation to the physical features of the adjacent country was but little understood. Since that time, surveys have shown that only a narrow strip, about two miles in width, was situated in the Territory of Montana, but it was also found that a still narrower strip extended westward into the Territory of Idaho. The question of properly establishing the boundaries, -based upon our present knowledge of the country, is now before Congress, and an Act has already passed the Senate, proposing to make the northern boundary coincide with the boundary between Wyoming and Montana, and the western boundary coincide with the Wyoming and Idaho line. The Act under consideration extends the southern boundary of the Park to the 44th parallel of latitude, carrying the area of the reservation southward nine and one-half miles. The eastern boundary is made to coincide with the meridian of 109' 30') adding a strip of country about twenty-four and one-half miles in width along the entire eastern side of the Park.

As elaborate discussion under this heading formed a chapter in one of the reports made by Professor Raymond as Commissioner of Mining Statistics." In a subsequent report? was printed a paper., by Mr. William Main, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina, containing a theoretical investigation into the effect of the velocity of impact on the effective ditty of stamps. A visit to the Lake Superior copper region last summer suggested an inquiry into the relative efficiency and economy of the enormous steam stamps of the copper-mills, as compared with the results obtained with the cam and tappet stamps commonly used in the West. The atmospheric stomp used at the Phoenix Mill promised to add interest to the inquiry, as giving an example of unusually high speed, this stamp making 160 drops per minute. In introducing his subject Dr. Raymond makes the following remarks, which are quite apropos of the present investigation: "In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted. The Bassick mine, located six miles east of Silver Cliff, Colorado, has, ever since its discovery, been noted for peculiar features. Some of these characteristics exist in one or two other mines, while some are entirely unique. Among these peculiarities I have selected the most noticeable for treatment in this paper: First. The methods of deposition of the ores, which is not, as in ordinary veins, in strata or layers parallel to the walls of the fissure. The ores are arranged in concentric layers upon detached and abraded fragments of the walls; each ore in a separate stratum, and always in the same place in the series. Second. The characteristics of the fissure or opening; its shape and dimensions; its contents, or the vein-filling; and its verticality. Third. The peculiar products of the mine. The most noticeable of these products is charcoal, which is occasionally, and at long intervals, found throughout the ore-body, and in the surrounding conglomerate, from the surface down to the present depth, which is something over eight hundred feet. The existence of charcoal here is, as far as I know, the only instance of its discovery in mines of metallic ores. Fourth. Besides the charcoal, there are other products, in themselves not peculiar, whose manner of arrangement and composition are unusual. The mine is situated near the centre of a small rounded hill of eruptive trachytic rock and feldspathic conglomerate. The diameter of the base of this hill varies from 700 to 1200 feet, and its height is 200 feet above the general level. A cliff or outcrop of fine conglomerate is exposed on the southwest side of the hill. On the northeast it joins by an upward slope the fine-grained, hardened feldspathic paste of Mount Tyndall, which rises 600 feet higher, and of which the elevation containing the Bassick mine thus forms an arm. On visiting the mine, one's attention, whether he is a scientist or not, is immediately attracted by the unusual method of arrangement of the ore. THE year 1923 started a few days after the Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., discovered a 140,000-bbl. well at. La Rosa and a well of between 2500 and 5000 bbl. at La Paz, on the opposite side of Lake Maracaibo. These nearly simultaneous events changed, overnight, the general aspect of oil affairs in Venezuela. Up to that time, big things had been expected by the companies then in the district, but many major companies had shown little interest in the country. Within a few weeks the Pure Oil. Co. and the Gulf Oil Corpn. entered the field and acquired large properties. The Texas Co. purchased several concessions and the Standard of California, Atlantic Refining Co., and Mexican Petroleum Co. established offices. Representatives of many other companies visited the district during the first few months of the year. The sudden influx of buyers naturally caused a great rise in prices and this, together with overproduction in the United States, doubtless caused the slowing up of concession transfers in the latter part of the year. The following property transfers occurred: (1) The Gulf Oil Corpn. contract with the Maracaibo Oil Exploration Corpn., whereby the Gulf acquired the right to select 100,000 acres from the Maracaibo's zones. (2) The Gulf Co. purchase of one-quarter interest in seven concessions of the New England Oil Corpn., Ltd. (3) The Gulf Oil Corpn. purchase of several concessions of Kunhardt and others in the Perija district. (4) The Gulf Oil Corpn. purchase of certain portions of the one-kilometer Lake zone that were not covered by parcels or Government reserves (namely the "sobrantes"). (5) Pure Oil Co. purchase of all Government reserves turned back by Maracaibo Oil Exploration Corpn. in the districts of Mara and Miranda. (6) Standard Oil Co.: of New Jersey deal with the British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., for control of approxi-mately the eastern third of the .district of Buchivacoa, state of Falcon. (7) Royal Dutch deal with the British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., for the control of the central third of the district of Buchivacoa, Falcon. (8) The Texas Co. purchase of several concessions in Perija and one west of Mene Grande on the east side of Lake Maracaibo. (9) Purchase by the British Equatorial Oil Co., Ltd., of Goverment reserves corresponding to certain Creole Syndicate parcels under the margin of Lake Maracaibo near La Paz. (10) The Lago Petroleum Co. acquired a concession on all of Lake Maracaibo except a 1-Km. strip along the shore.

THIS paper covers, besides laboratory work, a study of actual operation at the Washoe Smelter over a considerable period of time, together with the results of a visit to the Midvale plant of the United States Smelting- & Refining Co., near Salt Lake. For the latter privilege, as well as permission to publish the resulting data herein given, I am indebted to George W. Heintz, General Manager of the Midvale plant, and here take pleasure in. expressing my appreciation for the many courtesies extended to me by Mr. Heintz and members of the technical staff at the smelter. Almost all of the world's supply of arsenic is recovered as a by-product in the smelting of other metals. It is seen on the market in various forms, the most common being arsenic trioxide, the ? white arsenic " of commerce, which is sold as a heavy white powder, or in white, glassy, translucent masses. The trioxide is used in the manufacture of pigment, glass, and insecticides. About 50 per cent. of the domestic consumption is supplied by imports.

ANNUAL or necessary inspections and investigations of coal mines for various purposes were made possible through the Federal Coal Mine Inspection Act of May 7, 1941, which authorized entry to the Secretary of the Interior through the Bureau of Mines. Primary object of these inspections is to obtain information pertaining to health and safety conditions. Among the purposes for which the data are to be used, are annual reports to Congress, the publication of inspection reports, and the compilation and publication of statistics. The act states that inspections and investigations shall be made by employees of the Bureau of Mines, who shall co-operate with other bureaus of the U. S. Department of the Interior, as well as with the official mine-inspection, safety cr health agencies of the several states and territories. The act specifies that a coal-mine inspector shall have "the basic qualifica-

Henry LOUIS, London, England (communication to the Secretary) : Prof. Richards's paper has impressed me as highly valuable. Without entering upon any discussion of it as careful and thorough as it deserves, I venture to mention one or two points which a perusal of it has recalled to my mind in connection with my own study and practice of ore-dressing. I always mentally divide jigging into two phases: 1. A particle at rest on the jig-bed is lifted and carried upwards by the rising current of water, at an increasing velocity, which tends to a maximum. When the upward current is stopped, the particle continues to rise with rapidly diminishing velocity until it comes to rest. This completes the first phase. 2. In the second phase, the particle falls from its position of rest with an increasing velocity which tends again to a maximum, and continues to fall until the rising current of water has reduced its velocity to zero. This completes the second phase. The second phase will evidently be greatly modified by the effect of suction, as Prof. Richards shows; but I do not see that his experiments very clearly imitate the action of the second phase. And the brief intervals at the end of each phase, when the mineral particle, by reason of its acquired velocity, is still moving, though in opposition to the water-current, yet remain to be investigated. I feel especially, in Prof. Richards's paper, a difficulty which I have felt with regard to all similar previous investigations, namely, that the experiments deal with particles falling a long distance, when the velocity becomes uniform. I question whether this uniform maximum velocity is attained in actual jigging-practice. If so, it is certainly for a comparatively very small proportion only of each stroke. It seems to me that an investigation like that of Prof. Richards, but confined to the first 6 or 8 inches of fall only, and carried out with suitably delicate recording-apparatus, is what we

IN THE COURSE of its investigations directed toward providing strategic metals from domestic sources and toward utilizing power from Federal power projects in West, the Bureau of Mines concluded some years ago that the development of a method for producing electrolytic manganese might well be an important step towards both goals. Accordingly, laboratory investigations were undertaken in 1935. Further studied on a relatively large laboratory scale indicated that electrolytic manganese could be made from domestic ores at a cost not out of line with other nonferrous metals. On the basis of these results, the Electro Manganese Corp. Operating under U.S. Patent 2,119,560 issued to S, M, Shelton and assigned to the Secretary of the Interior for administration, undertook commercial production of electrolytic manganese at Knoxville, Tenn, This company has brought the process through the pilot-plant stage successfully, and is now regularly producing approximately one ton a day.

During November and December, 1907, four serious mine-explosions occurred in the Appalachian coal-field, which resulted in the loss of nearly a thousand lives and caused an eliormous damage to propcrty. These accidents attracted more than the usual attention; coal-trade and engineering papers contained many comments and suggestions on the cause and prevention of accidents; the daily press in many instances condemned the coal-operators and charged these accidents to their negligence, or their anxiety to make money without adopting precautionary measures. Immediately after cach accident the respective State authorities ordered close investigations to be made, with the view of establishing the cause and suggesting remedies to prevent recurrence. Representatives of the Technologic Branch of the IT. S. Geological Survey, to whom the investigation of mine-accidents had recently been delegated by the Secretary of the Interior, visited the mines and co-operated with the local authorities in their determinations. It may be safe to say here that an investigation of a mine after an explosion has occurred discloses but little, because the causes hare been removed and conditions have been entirely changed. On Jan. 8, 1908, the coal-operators of West Virginia organized an association at qTashington for the purpose of making extensive investigations, and sufficient funds were pledged to carry out this work. At this organization meeting, the representatives of the Geological Survey present had no suggestions to offer as to the cause of these accidents. An examinatiou of the various reports concerning these accidents indicates that the explosions were caused by the ignition of gas or dust; they show the point of origin and the direction in which the force was expended, and give a detailed description of the damage done. THE Annual Fall Meeting held in Chicago in conjunction with the celebration of a Centennial of Engineering brought forth a round of field trips and symposiums which did much to add to the store of information of the 240 who registered for the gathering. Instead of a scattered program, technical papers were grouped together in organized symposiums, where the particular importance of each report was enhanced by presentation in context. Despite the heavy accent on technical papers and informative field trips, those attending the meeting had ample time to enjoy the benefits of a visit to Chicago. The AIME dinner dance was held at the Palmer House, in the Red Lacquer Room. The Chicago Section played host Friday evening at dinner. The MBD held four sessions at the meeting headquarters, the Palmer House, September 4 and 5. Featuring the meetings was a review of taconite concentration and new theories on comminution. The first session opened with a paper on the Structural Features Which Effect the Concentration of Iron Formations, presented by F. J. Tolonen. The paper was centered upon the various members of the low grade iron formations of the separate Michigan districts. The study correlated macrostructure, microstructure, and concentration tests. [ ] Beneficiation Characteristics of Michigan Low Grade Iron Ores, presented by F. X. Tartaron, cochairman of the session, reviewed the work of his laboratory on the beneficiation of low grade ore taken from various strata of a deep shaft on the Marquette Range. The paper included data on flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation, and combinations of these processes. The economics of low grade ore treatment generated great interest. Ty. Maki offered a compilation and correlation of field results with magnetic separators in ferrosilicon and magnetite medium recovery circuits. Following the morning session, 130 persons attended a luncheon, followed by a brief business meeting. Later, a film illustrating the grinding, separation, and pelletizing steps investigated by the Mines Experiment Bureau, was presented by H. H. Wade. T. E. Ban, and L. J. Erck gave a report on pelletizing which evoked much discussion. R. A. Limons presented a paper on the Mineralogy of Blast Furnace Sinter, for its author, H. M. Kraner. Friday sessions featured a new hypothesis for high speed drill rod milling and a new technical approach to comminution. Jack Myers commented that Consolidated's large rod mill was a hammer mill turned inside out. Steve Erickson described the use of Cyclones for Heavy Media Concentration of Iron Ore Fines. Bob Meaders gave a Progress Report on the Aerofall Mill. Shiou-Chuan Sun described an improved high frequency analyzer for studying the conductivity of suspensions of various minerals. L. A. Roe discussed a magnetic reflux condensor which enabled him to determine the degree of liberation of magnetic iron ores. Roy A. Johnson described a function of the hydroscilator in which the fan rake was eliminated in favor of a conical bottom. The Industrial Minerals Division sessions held September 5 and 6 and were well attended. The Friday morning session was particularly concerned with developments and advances in industrial minerals with special emphasis on the Chicago area. The first two papers dealt with transportation on the Great Lakes and fuel movement into the Chicago area. The third paper proved to be of great interest, turning the spotlight on the fairly new hydraulic mining methods introduced by a silica company in the Ottawa, Ill. field.

DuRing the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the overburden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semicircle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. DuRing the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the overburden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semicircle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done ? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on t,his subject, and the results seem to furniih an answer to the question propounded above. Sampling for the U. 8. Geological Survey Coal- Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal, in car-load lots only, would be accepted for testing; also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sample from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N W. Lord of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Samp1ing.—Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations adopted for mine-sampling mas, that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine.

AN elaborate discussion under this heading formed a chapter in one of the reports made by Professor Raymond as Commissioner of Mining Statistics.* In a subsequent report- was printed a paper, by Mr. William Main, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina, containing a theoretical investigation into the effect of the velocity of impact on the effective ditty of stamps. A visit to the Lake Superior copper region last summer suggested an inquiry into the relative efficiency and economy of the enormous steam stamps of the copper-mills, as compared with the results obtained with the cant and tappet stamps commonly used in the West. The atmospheric stamp used at the Phoenix Mill promised to add interest to the inquiry, as giving an example of unusually high speed, this stamp making 160 drops per minute. In introducing his subject Dr. Raymond makes the following remarks, which are quite apropos of the present investigation : "In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at- the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted.
