A vertical grain boundary intercepting a horizontal free surface forms a groove to reduce the combined surface energy of the system. We study grooving by surface diffusion with anisotropic surface energy. A recently developed delta-function model of facets is used to describe the surface energy with three or four fold symmetry. It is found that the groove grows following a similarity law. The self-similar groove profile is solved numerically by a shooting method. Even with strong anisotropy, the groove profile can be smooth if the exposed surface orientations do not include a facet orientation. The smooth self-similar groove shape is the same as an isotropic groove, but the size is reduced by a factor that depends on the degree of anisotropy. This induces a large error on the value of surface diffusivity if the isotropic model is used for an anisotropic system. My remarks are directed at relating some of the mineralogical approaches mentioned in the preceding presentations to emerging energy issues. The assembling of this symposium on process mineralogy attests to the growing concern for energy development from the non-petroleum mineral fuels and the unconventional petroleum fuels. A report in 1979, prepared under the auspices of the National Research Council/National Academy, of Sciences, was published in two parts and dealt with "Redistribution of Accessory Elements in Mining and Mineral Processing." This report rather comprehensively considers broad aspects of minerals associated with the solid fuels considered in this symposium and focuses attention on some problems of process mineralogy relative to these fuels. Papers have dealt with coal, oil shale, tar sands, and uranium minerals. Problems associated with mining, processing, and use of these materials have significant differences, but also have some factors in common relative to the subject of this symposium.

"This address discusses how ""Mineral Processing Technology"" can play a major role in the life and profitability of a mining company. Examples of past and present technological breakthroughs and their impacts will be examined. Also, the future of processing technology will be emphasized.IntroductionThis talk will center on the role of technology as an important component of a business plan for mining companies. I'll attempt to explain how I see technology development as an underpinning of a successful mining company. We will examine an example of a technology that has resulted in a re-birth of segments of the industry, examine a technology life cycle and discuss technology as it relates to ore reserve replacement. Also, we will touch on technology in today's mining company and propose some food for thought for those designers of corporate organizations."

"Metallurgy, as all of material science and engineering, rests on the intellectual foundations of processing-structure-property-performance relationships. Today it is widely recognized that processing has been too long neglected and presents exciting opportunities for exploitation. New processes, many of them already in the laboratory, will be exploited in the year 2000 and beyond, for near net shape forming and for achieving-new metallurgical structures and composite structures. Process modelling will alter the way we think about process and product design. Processes themselves will increasingly be automated and controlled by computers, altering the nature of the workplace and the tasks of the metallurgical engineer of the future. IntroductionInnovations in metal processing is hardly a new phenomenon, with the field thousands of years old. Nonetheless, the next few decades offer particularly important opportunities to improve our ability to process these materials. We appreciate today the variety of processing paths available to us, including vapor-, plasma- and electro-deposition, multiple phase and casting technologies, and non-equilibrium processes, and how these affect structure at the atomic level and at higher levels of aggregation. We understand the basic physical mechanisms involved far better than even before and have remarkable new abilities to predict, control, and simulate the kinetics underlying processes, and the processes themselves.The following sections describe these new opportunities in greater detail. First, we examine developments in the modelling of metal processing. We then consider some implications associated with process control and automation. Finally we present what we consider to be particularly promising metal processing technologies, and conclude with a few summary comments."
