The E-Power Pipe technology was originally developed for the trenchless installation of protective pipes and pipelines of 10" to 28" diameter, over long distances of more than 4,000 ft. The twostage process combines elements from Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and microtunnelling technology. A microtunnelling boring machine (MTBM) excavates the borehole using a specially designed, temporary jacking pipe. A Rack & Pinion jacking frame pushes the equipment during the pilot bore and pulls in the prefabricated pipe string in a second step. The slurry microtunnelling machine is equipped with a jet pump, creating the so-called AVNS machine type. A new generation of small hard rock cutting wheels complements this considerable achievement for the tunnelling industry

During the past few years, the first stage of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, (WIPP) which consists of an exploratory shaft, a ventilation shaft, shaft stations, access drifts and test rooms, has been under construction. Construction of the first stage is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 1983. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is constructing the WIPP facility to demonstrate the feasibility of disposing of defense-related nuclear waste in the bedded salt deposits of the Delaware Basin near Carlsbad, N.M. The project promises to be a proving ground for underground nuclear waste storage facility design and construction. The completed underground plant will extend over an area of 647,500 m2 (160 acres), and 1,360,500 metric tons (1,500,000 tons) of salt will be excavated. The first stage of the project, the Site and Preliminary Design Validation (SPDV) Program, provides for full-scale construction of the major components of the underground facility. Shaft construction and underground development are described. Rock bolt installation is performed as required for roof control. Geotechnical instrumentation is installed to monitor the behavior of underground openings. Direct observation of the constructed shafts, shaft stations, and underground openings is expected to confirm the adequacy of the underground design and allow full-scale construction of the first U.S. underground nuclear waste storage facility to proceed.

A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. In today’s challenging mining environment, everyone is focused on minimizing cost per ton. With haulage costs approaching up to 45% of the overall mining costs, and loader performance driving production, optimizing payload on the truck is a big opportunity. This paper will focus on technology’s role in loaders achieving the truck target payload. There are constantly new innovations in technology, but not everyone uses them correctly. Technology is intended to help achieve the next level of performance, but still requires the right people and processes to effectively utilize the benefits. In today’s mining business, miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in past decades. Technology can make these roles more efficient, but fully relying on the technology can detract from optimization. Sometimes the old-fashioned method of loading to a consistent pass match will provide a lower cost per ton. Before blindly trusting your technology feedback, know these three areas discussed in this paper: (1) Prerequisites to utilize technology in payload management; (2) Types of payload management technology; (3) How to use the data to manage operator behavior. The objective of this paper is to provide low-cost recommendations to efficiently increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all, or they are the data-driven new generation on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to staff the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? Let the technology system do the rest; what could go wrong? Lots. Having examined numerous mining operations that use the latest loading technologies over the past several years, one common denominator is the opportunity to improve loader operator performance. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, but the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, not managing the resources to drive the right behavior and as a result, the mine’s performance is not where it should be. Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down. Extraction CPT (Cost-Per-Ton) is most sensitive to optimizing loader production which can be generalized into 3 categories of influence: machine specifications, cycle timing, and continuous management using technology. After establishing a basic production machine configuration, utilizing technology to manage cycle times, operator efficiency and payload can be advantageous. Prerequisites to Utilize Payload Management Technology It is important to begin with the primary considerations that enable the use of technology to continuously manage loading productivity. All systems are interdependent in mining, but these are divided into the simplest terms to remember. First, fix your timing and geometry.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

Artisanal and small-scale underground gold mining in Colombia plays a significant role in the country’s economy, but it faces persistent occupational hazards that threaten worker safety. Despite mining economic contributions, outdated technologies, limited risk management practices, and insufficient regulatory enforcement have led to recurring workplace accidents, many of which have been fatal. This study presents a systematic review of mining-related accidents over the last decade. Through geo-referenced analysis, high-risk municipalities were identified, and the frequency of accidents was correlated with the mining legal status and operational practices of these municipalities. The findings underscore the urgent need for evidencebased interventions that are tailored to the country’s unique mining context. Ultimately, this research contributes to the global discourse on mining safety by highlighting practical pathways to reduce occupational risks and promote safer, healthier workplaces in resource-constrained environments.

Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. Gold is very important to support the financial system, and to be used in industries of the jewelry, high-tech fields such as electronics and aerospace, etc. Gold is mainly extracted from three types of ores: primary ore (vein gold), placer (alluvial gold) and associated ore. Cyanide was widely used in gold ore flotation to depress gangue minerals and leaching/cyanidation. The process of extracting gold from gold ore, its separation and flotation concentrate, specifically through a technique called cyanidation or cyanide leaching. This method, which has been dominant since the 1970s, utilizes a dilute solution of cyanide to dissolve gold from the ore. While effective, the use of cyanide raises environmental and safety concerns due to its high toxicity. Cyanide spills can have severe environmental consequences. This has led to the exploration of alternative, environmentally friendly reagents. This paper discusses processing results using the alternative flotation depressants such as sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), etc. to produce a goldrich flotation concentrate for sale to a smelter or as feed to an alternative leaching agent. and methods to extract gold from ore without relying on cyanide.

1. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has often taken a leading role in introducing innovative construction technologies to build its transit system. Most recently, Contract Section E-5a, which included Fort Totten Station and Tunnels was constructed utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) in soft ground. Along with the station and tunnels, two permanent shafts were also constructed in soft ground employing the NATM technique. This project is located within the District of Columbia on the Greenbelt Route. The subject of this paper is to discuss the unique method of construction of these two shafts, and explore the benefits of applying the NATM technique to the construction of deep shafts. The design of the shafts was performed jointly by Jenny Engineering Corporation of Springfield, New Jersey, and Mayreder Consult of Linz, Austria. The designers also provided construction support services and a resident NATM expert at the site during construction. The construction of the project started in April 1988 by a joint venture of Mergentime Corporation and H. T. Construction, a subsidiary of Hochtief Company from Germany. This $48.7 million construction project has been completed. 2. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The two NATM shafts are located primarily in Cretaceous-age deposits that are over 100 million years old. A three-year project focusing on the depth profiling of respirable coal mine dust particles using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis resulted in the development of statistically classified particle-behavior models. The models depict the changing silicon fraction for 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-keV accelerating voltages, thereby giving a clear indication of the nature of various types of particles. The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure for the quantitative estimation of support load requirements in underground mines. Emphasis is upon the basic features of support behavior common to a large variety of support systems-bolts, timber sets, stope fill, steel arches, concrete liners and so forth. A strong reliance is placed upon fundamental principles and modern computing techniques for their quantitative implementation. Example problems illustrate the approach. Where artificial support is required, the ground in the vicinity of the face usually stands unsupported long enough for the support to be installed. At the time of installation, the load transferred to the support from the adjacent rock is essentially zero, although in some cases there may be an initial set load, for example, from timber blocking. With the passage of time and advance of the face, ground motion loads the supports. If the support system is properly designed, then the additional loading poses no threat to the safety and productivity of operations. If not, then difficulties may arise including high maintenance costs, hazardous work conditions and reduced productivity. Of course, over-design can be equally wasteful. Quantitative estimation of support loads is therefore essential to overall efficiency in mining.

"Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

The mining industry’s commitment to innovation reflects a history of adopting technological advancements to enhance workplace safety, environmental sustainability and vocational training. The objective of this research was to develop an augmented- reality (AR) system for heavy-equipment operators (HEOs) in surface mining. The developed system has the potential to enhance mine safety, training and data-driven decision- making, which presents a significant step toward a more sustainable, effective and technologically driven mining training, contributing to the industry’s evolution and growth. The AR training system leverages Microsoft’s Power Platform and HoloLens 2 capacities to provide operators with detailed and immersive training guides for three mining equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders and haul trucks. AR guides combine speech controls, 3D objects, informative images and explicative videos in the real working conditions to enhance the operator’s learning process. The system has the potential to modify the training structure based on user performance and provides an efficient approach to data collection during training. This project was developed and applied through a case study in a surface mine in the Southern United States.

Comments Summary It is very interesting to review the technical changes which have occurred in the industrial practice of minerals flotation over the past two decades. In 1972, worldwide industrial flotation was dominated by 'mechanical' flotation machines having an individual cell volume less than 500 cu.ft. Manufactures, such as DENVER Eqpt. Co., OUTOKUMPU, WEMCO, GALIGHER (AGITAIR), AKKER, and later DORR-OLIVER, produced flotation machines featuring a mechanical rotating impeller which served to mix pulp and air, prior to flotation, and to keep the solid ore particles in suspension. While sharing this common mechanical impeller feature, the machine design of the various manufactures differed in detail; particularly in regard to the vertical location of the impeller in the cell and the means by which flotation air was brought into contact with the pulp within the rotor mechanism. A review of the existing technical literature in 1972 would identify academic research studies, particularly at Columbia University (N. Arbiter, C, Harris ...) aimed at comparing flotation cell design concepts, of the various machine manufactures, on a hydrodynamic basis. These research studies were confined to very small, laboratory bench size, flotation machines, and the benefits of incorporating hydrodynamic considerations in the scale-up of the existing 300 cu.ft. mechanical flotation technology to larger cells was not commonly practiced industrially. Technological advances in minerals flotation, over the past two decades, have been influenced by a variety of economic factors including the increasing development of lower grade ore bodies, the attractions of producing a higher grade final concentrate, and the economy of tails retreatment to improve overall plant recovery performance, and flotation system “optimization" became increasingly important through the 1970-80 time period. The trend toward processing lower grade ores led to higher tonnage mill operations, and stimulated the development of the very large capacity mechanical flotation machine for roughing and scavenging duty. In 1972, the 500 cu.ft. size flotation machine was being pilot tested and introduced to the industrial market. Today, 1993, individual cell volumes of 1500-3000 cu.ft. are operating successfully throughout the world, and well planned plant test programs have concluded that the very large flotation machine can achieve the same metallurgical performance level of its smaller predecessor. The large flotation machine development record clearly credits the incorporation of internal cell hydrodynamic considerations in guiding the scale-up of the mechanical flotation machine to large sizes. This guidance eliminated, or reduced significantly, costly in-plant prototype machine changes which increase Dramatically with increasing flotation machine size. Early in the 1980's, at approximately the time that flotation machines in the 1500 cu.ft. class were being introduced into the market, it became evident that the availability of the very large mechanical flotation machine brought with it the need for a systematic means to "optimize" the flotation system by relating flotation cell size, row length (i.e. number of cells per row), and flotation rougher, scavenger, and cleaner system configuration to the economic objectives of the concentrators' operating management. Flotation system optimization consists of quantifying the flotation process performance using a suitable model which relates the kinetic response of the trace specie and the gangue material to the cell overflow, and produces a numerical relationship between product grade and value recovery. The computer analysis technique has proven to be an invaluable tool in determining the kinetic model coefficients which characterize a given application, and is also used to apply the resulting model to a proposed minerals beneficiation situation seeking to "optimize" the flotation system by relating metallurgical grade-recovery performance, flotation cell size, and circuit arrangement, to plant space, installation, and operating costs. It is interesting to note that these same computer based kinetic flotation analysis techniques can be easily applied to quantitatively evaluate the effect of different chemical reagent strategies, and flotation air transfer, on process performance for a variety of candidate feed ore types.

"Advanced data acquisition and process modelling technology provides online data and decision support about different aspects of the resource extraction process. Real-time approaches have recently been applied to utilize the value of this information for improved production control in mineral resource extraction in different operational set ups including coal, polymetallic ore and gold deposits. The key concept of these approaches promotes the change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online material characteristics data acquired during extraction at the mining face, during material handling and processing with a sequentially up-datable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimization of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control. The contribution reviews recent developments in the three main constituents sensor based material characterisation, rapid updating of grade control models and simulation based optimization for improved production control. Technological readiness is assessed and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The value added is illustrated by means of selected case studies. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of known and established mineral reserves, the decrease in head grades and the continuing demand of mineral raw materials by the modern society, future exploitation will move towards extraction of deposits under geologically more complex conditions. Complex deposits are characterized by a low continuity in grade, presence of deleterious elements such as arsenic and high irregularity in the geometry of the ore boundaries. The profitable exploitation of such deposits becomes significantly more challenging. To be able to better utilize such unconventional mineral resources of the future, smart autonomous mining systems are needed, which integrate local exploration of spatially varying material characteristics in–situ and have the ability to follow and extract the pay zones in the ore body while minimizing dilution (Buxton and Benndorf, 2013). The main barriers to overcome for the successful economic exploitation are: • effective grade control which will maximize resource potential along the whole value chain, • minimization of handling zero-value material introduced by dilution, thus • reducing unnecessary expenditure of energy and financial resources and • management and control of the geological uncertainty due to limited information available,"

Lamco Joint Venture is operating a Dravo Pelletizing machine to produce pellets from the natural slimes of an earthy hematite ore. The grate area of the machine 3.3 x 106 m equal to 350 m2 (3800 sq. ft.) and the installed fan capacity is 8200 HP. The limiting factor for production is normally fan capacity. This means that the processing fans can not pull the additional air (i.e the additional calories or BTUs) through the bed which would be required for increased production. A way to increase production without major modifications is to supply the additional calories needed for increase production by adding coal to the pellet feed. After successful laboratory tests following method of coal addition has been chosen and the following results have been obtained. 1. The ground coal is added to the slurry prior to the filters and the rotary dryer. 2. By adding 0.6% coal, an increase of about 15% in production rate has been obtained. 3. No significant changes of metallurgical properties have been observed (i.e. tumbler index, compressive strength, ferrous iron content, reducibility, Linder degradation and swelling). 4. No unexpected operation problems have been experienced. The pellet discharge temperature increases and is the limit for how much production can be increased by coal addition without making plant modifications.

The Eureka Mine is situated in the Guruve district of Zimbabwe, some 150 km north of Harare. The mine was first worked in 1895 and until recently was operated as a typical Zimbabwean "smallworking" with a single owner­operator and small labour force mining at up to 50m depth and processing 50 tonnes per day of ore via grind, gravity recovery and CIP. The gravity circuit comprised a Knelson 12" Centre discharge Concentrator from which a significant but variable portion of production was recovered. In 1996 exploration was commenced by Delta Gold Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd (DGZ), a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Gold NL of Australia, with the aim of testing mineralisation and establishing a large-scale open pit operation. A feasibility study was completed in April 1998. Construction began in August 1998 and first gold was poured in June 1999. The mine is designed to produce 65 000 oz/annum of gold from 1.5 million tonnes of opencast ore grading 2 git Au.

Located in Mojave, CA, The Soledad Mountain mine is an Open pit Heap-Leach gold Mine, which is operated by Golden Queen Mining Company LLC. under private capital. Open pit mining began in 2015 while full production was reached in 2016. The open pit mine feed a processing plant that can process more than 13K tons per day of ore which is sent to a heap leach pad. The Soledad Mountain project is a poly metallic deposit with Au and AG being recovered as payable metals. As the mine became bigger after moving to the east pit phases, Golden Queen was facing new challenges to control the production and accurately determine KPIs to improve/increase the production. To maximize returns and asset value, a new fleet management system (FMS) was adopted and implemented. The new FMS has enabled the mine to interconnect the different stages of the mining, as well as to recognize issues and implement the necessary corrections. With the associated increase in complexity in the process, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery. Implementation of new daily and weekly plans were needed to ensure the ore delivery and meeting the tonnage goals, while allowed the equipment operators to better geolocate and to maximize the equipment production. These conditions alongside with Golden Queen’s drive to increase profitability and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and multifaceted. However, the ability to accurately route the material from the mine, is critical to site success and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption of the new FMS, the implementation of daily and weekly plans and upgrades in the ore control workflow. Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity', innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.
