As an industry approaches stabilization, greater and greater stress must be laid on its technologic progress, which becomes a prime aid in improving its condition. The oil industry is tending toward this stage and hence its engineers must be pressed into greater service to prevent stabilization and stagnation from becoming synonymous, and to supply, either by improvements in processes or by new machinery, a means of obtaining savings in raw and finished products. Thus profits can be assured warranting continued investment. It may be repeated, technology must apply a slight improvement here, a change there, or a complete renovation, to eliminate inefficiencies and make each dollar invested yield greater results. The profits of ycstcrday were made of rich strikes, of monopolized patents or processes, of control of prices and of markets. Sixty-five years of growth, of large investment, of healthful competition, and of expanding markets, have put the oil industry in the foremost rank of world industries. .Just as the railroads passed a similar period of expansion and growth, and arc being stabilized with reasonable profits, so the oil industry must take advantage of the efforts of its engineers and experts to promote its healthful growth and a better service to the people. Herein is attempted a review of recent progress in which is presented the advances in exploration, production engineering, transportation, refining and greater efficiency in uses of petroleum, with a view not only to stressing important new processes and methods, but also the problems that press for solution. This review can only touch outstanding developments of recent years, but the several Petroleum Division symposiums of our program will present details worthy of attention. Exploration Geology offers directly little new in the technique of oil-finding— major stress being laid on improvement in subsurface correlation by means of foraminifera1 studies, additions to the knowledge of which are being made, slowly but surely, and by means of mineral, and especially heavy mineral, determinations in well samples. a. Boundaries of the District.—The district here considered comprises that portion of Colorado commonly known as " the San Juan Country." In order to bring the principal geological features of this region within the scope of a map of convenient dimensions upon a suitable scale, I have found it desirable to mark off boundaries near the parallels of 37O and 38O 10', and the meridiaus of 106' 30' and 108' 30' (West Longitude from Greenwich). This area of (approximately) 9400 square miles includes all the formations which we should have to discuss if our territory were greatly enlarged, excepting such as are distinctly characteristic of adjoining areas with independent orographic genesis. By limiting this review to these confines we miss very little of the geology of the eight counties of the San Juan region, viz.: Dolores, San Miguel, Ouray, Hinsdale,

PetRoleum engineers generally are familiar with the investigations of Dow and Reistle,1 Beecher and Parkhurst,2 and Dow and Calkin3 relative to the solubility of natural gas in crude oil. Since the publication of the results of those investigations and the work of Mills and Heithecker,4 little additional knowledge on this interesting and important subject has appeared in the petroleum engineering literature. The reports of Beecher and Parkhurst and Dow and Calkin agree substantially. The data from both investigations showed that, under the conditions of the tests, the solubility of natural gas in crude oil increased in direct proportion to the pressure at which the gas was put into solution, and the solubility decreased to a considerable extent with increased temperature. These facts, and others relating to the changes in viscosity, surface tension and specific gravity of the crude caused by the solution of gas in the oil, have been given due consideration in the petroleum industry, and the recognition of these facts has resulted in a great improvement in the technique of producing oil. However, in these first experiments, various grades and types of weathered crude oil were contacted at various pressures up to 500 lb. per sq. in. gage with gases deficient to a considerable degree in the heavier hydrocarbons, as compared with the gas that was originally in solution in the oil in its natural underground reservoir. The amount of dissolved gas that was liberated upon reducing the pressure to 1 atm. was measured. For these reasons, the complete significance of the effect of dissolved gases in crude oil, as it occurs in nature, cannot be determined directly from the data obtained under the conditions of the tests as described.

By use of the frequency response method with a radioactive tracer, it was possible to determine fluid dispersion and distribution in a natural consolidated and an unconsolidated medium. Measurements were made in a linear flow system at oleic saturations of 69 per cent in the consolidated medium, and 100 per cent in both media. Dispersion and distribution were obtained by measuring the amplitude attenuation and the phase velocity of sinusoidal waves with a dual monitor apparatus. The gamma ray emissions permitted in situ measurements at any distance along the porous samples. One result of importance was that the effective diffusivity increased as the wave length increased. As a consequence, a dispersion coefficient appropriate for the injection of large slugs might exceed the value measured by use of small slugs. Since flow models based solely on fluid velocity and an effective diffusivity coefficient imply that the diffusivity should be independent of frequency, such representations were not adequate for the data of this study. A comparison was made with a capacitance model of porous media with deadend PVs, but even this model was not completely adequate. By using attenuation and phase velocity data, fluid dispersion can be predicted without postulating a differential equation satisfied by the tracer concentration, thereby eliminating the need of a complicated model to represent dispersion. INTRODUCTION The flow of similar miscible fluids through a porous medium can be fairly adequately described by two parameters: the average fluid velocity and the effective diffusivity.1-3 It has been pointed out recently, however, that significant discrepancies exist between this representation and the experimental data.4-7 An improved agreement can be obtained by introducing additional parameters based on the concept of dead-end pores. The purpose of the present investigation was to find out whether the frequency response method could be used to measure the relevant parameters. The method was used in the following form. A stream of fluid was flowed at a constant rate through a sample of porous material and the concentration of a radioactive tracer in the fluid was varied sinusoidally at a fixed frequency. The effects of flow through a porous medium are a decrease in the amplitude of the concentration wave and an increase in the velocity of the peaks of the waves above the average velocity. Attenuation and phase veIocity of the waves were measured as a function of frequency and fluid velocity. The simple two-parameter model implies that the diffusivity should be independent of frequency. Data reported in this paper show that the diffusivity decreases as the frequency increases. Hence, as shown also by many others, the two-parameter model is not completely adequate. Coats and Smith 5 used two additional parameters in their model: the volume of the dead-end pores and the rate of mass transfer between dead-end pores and the flowing stream. Their capacitance model of a porous medium containing some stagnant fluid, to which transfer occurs by molecular diffusion, did not explain the dispersion results of either the present study or of theirs. Instead, the capacitance effect can be better described as the result of extreme velocity variations within the pores of the medium, with transfer between the velocity zones by convection. EXPERIMENTAL PREPARATION OF POROUS MEDIA Data reported here were obtained with a natural Berea sandstone, and with two packings of 20/25 mesh sand. COAL, like most other minerals, only exceptionally occurs in a sufficiently pure state to he directly available for general manufacturing purposes. And even where this is the case, the small coal or slack is usually more impure than the lump coal, as the slate, clay, etc., from the roof and bottom of the vein become mixed with it in the handling it undergoes. These impurities often exceed ten or more percent in addition to the impurities of the coal itself. The most common impurities of the coal are slate, or shale, clay, and sulphur. The latter occurs in different forms, but most frequently as bisulphide of iron, or iron pyrites, and as sulphate of lime, or gypsum. In both cases the impurities add greatly to the amount of ash, and where they are present in considerable quantities the raw coal, and still more the coke made from it, is unfit for the, manufacture of iron. Coke will contain on an average at least ;fifty per cent, more ash and sulphur than the raw coal from which it is, made. To the manufacturer of iron every additional per cent. of ash which his coal or .coke contains is a source of additional expense, seemingly small, and yet very important in the aggregate. In the blast-furnace, for instance, the ash must be heated up to the melting-point, and, since it is composed largely of refractory substances, the consumption of carbon in melting it will be equal to at least one-half of its weight ; that is, a certain part of the coke is consumed for the melting and fluxing of the ash and is lost. Besides this, it is well enough known to the-iron-master that coke containing less ash makes the slag or cinder more liquid and less inclined to stick to- the walls of the furnace. Fuel containing much sulphur produces generally a white iron, poor in carbon, while from the same ore and flux, with a pure fuel, a good foundry iron might be obtained. The attainment of efficient flooding to a large extent depends upon a knowledge of fluid movement through porous media and the pressures used in controlling this movement. Little has been understood con-cerning the fundamental principles involved in the forced drive of water-flooding and an attempt will be made to present some data which may be of interest. Considerable data and technical information pertaining to natural and artificial water-flooding have been presented in the past by Torrey, Umpleby, Fettke, Panyity and others. Their papers have thoroughly covered the description of past and present-day methods of oil recovery by flooding in the Bradford field, especially an article by Torreyl in the Petroleum Engineering Handbook. A bibliography of papers devoted to watcr-flooding, published in Mr. Torrey's article, is appended to this paper. No attempt has been made, therefore, to describe the installations and procedure necessary in flooding, thus permitting the writer to deal exclusively with the mechanics of water movement in flooding operations and its relationship to well spacing. Artificial water-flooding will probably always be the most successful in oil fields described by Herold as being under "capillary control"" and will probably be useless in fields naturally under hydraulic or volumetric control. The natural water drive in an oil field under either of these two controls may give efficient recoveries, as a result of the regulated encroachment of edge water. Such a "natural flood" resulting from the influence of edge water must not be confused with the term as used in this paper, however. Any reference to "natural flood" will here refer to the old method of flooding formerly used in the Bradford field. This was discovered largely by accident and utilized the hydrostatic pressure created by a column of water standing in a watered-out oil well in forcing the oil to an adjacent producing well. FOR sixty years-in fact, ever since the inception of the basic steelmaking process -basic slags have been the subject of study by chemists, metallurgists and petrographers, with the purpose of providing a better understanding of the reactions between the slag and the metal during the refining process. The result of this work and of the researches of mineralogists and physical chemists into the chemistry of oxide systems is a considerable body of literature dealing not only with slags themselves but with equilibrium relationships in systems synthesized from pure components. Since any actual slag is a multicomponent system more complex than any yet worked out in the laboratory, a complete solution to the problem is still far away. The writers have recently published a paper1 which they believe sheds light on the role of the slag in the elimination of phosphorus and it is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the metallurgical applications of that work. Since the pioneer investigations on the constitution of basic slags carried on by Stead and Risdale, Carnot and Richards, Hilgenstock and others in the 1880's, a considerable body of literature on this subject has appeared. Many of the more important of these papers were summarized in the previous paper,' therefore they will not be reviewed here. PETROGRAPHIC STUDY The present writers have had occasion, over a period of years, to examine petrographically a great number of basic steel- making slags having a very wide range of chemical compositions and made under various conditions of operating practice. Although certain of these slags exhibit some unusual features, it is a remarkable fact that the great majority of mature slags show certain typical characteristics, which persist throughout the wide range of chemical compositions. The typical mature slag usually appears under the microscope to consist of two phases. The phase of primary crystallization is light colored and doubly refracting. If separated mechanically and subjected to chemical analysis, it is found to consist essentially of SiO2, CaO, and P2O5. Sometimes, although not usually, two such silicate-phosphate phases are found. The other conspicuous phase is dark in color and optically isotropic, and occurs as the interstitial material between the grains of the light colored phase. This dark colored interstitial phase when analyzed is found to consist essentially of FeO,Fe2O3, MnO, and MgO. In some slags high in iron oxide, particularly those from low-carbon heats, dicalcium ferrite is found. This phase is dark reddish brown in color and anisotropic.

The mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. 'Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.—a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included. Measurements have been made of solute segregation during dendrilic growth by using radioactive solute elements and ,measuring the activity of den(12-ites cut from decanted specimens. This has been done for both lead awl tin based binary alloys contaitzing the following solute additions: Ag, T1204, was dependet on ko, the equilibrium distribution coefficient in the following way Fay k &apos;c 0.1, C/C 0.6; for k0 >0.1. 0.6 <c,/c,< I. Qualitative obse?-vations were madc of dendritic segregation, by using autoradiographic techniques, for the Sn + Ag110 and Sn + Tlo4 systems. The observation were found to he in general agreement with the measurements ofCA/Co. Autoradiographic were also obtained of scctiolccl delzr11-iie stalks. These indicated that the stalks had a substructure, dclileated by solute corzetlt?atio?zs nlolg the substructure walls. A new dendrite growth direction <JI2> is reported for tila. SOLUTE segregation in dilute binary alloys has been investigated by Pfann,&apos; Smith, Tiller, and Rut-ter,&apos; and others. They considered the case of a slowly advancing plane solid interface, and derived expressions for the distribution of solute in both solid and liquid during solidification. To determine these expressions, they assumed no diffusion in the solid and either complete mixing in the liquid:&apos; or diffusion controlled solute movements in the liquid without any convective mixing.&apos; The present investigation considers solute segregation during dendritic growth, in which case the solid-liquid interface is not plane, and the growth rates are rapid. Segregation under these growth conditions has not been treated mathematically, because of the relative complexity of the system. It has been suggested by Chalmer, on the basis of preliminary results, that an alternative to the diffusion and heat flow controlled conditions during growth is &apos;diffusionless" dendritic growth in which solid is formed with the same composition as the liquid. He suggests this type of growth may depend upon a solvent-solute relationship that permits some solid solubility without excessive increase in internal energy, as is the case for solutions of tin in lead. On the other hand, Montariol,4 and others, have shown experimentally that some segregation does occur during dendritic growth in metals using etching and radioactive tracer techniques to indicate the concentrations of the solute. The present investigation was undertaken to determine, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the extent of solute segregation associated with dendritic growth in a series of binary alloys, as a function of solute concentration. PROCEDURE The solvent materials used were Vulcan Electrolytic tin (99.997 pct purity) and Tadanac lead (99.998 pct purity). The solute materials were Zn, Sn, and Sb (better than 99.998 pct purity), Ag and Co (99.5 pct purity), and T1 (Fisher "purified" metal sticks). Activation of the solute metals was carried out in the reactor at Chalk River, Canada. Master alloys were prepared by induction heating from the radioactive solute metal and the pure solvent, under argon, in graphite crucibles. Pieces of these alloys were then added to the solvent to give the required solute concentration. Dendrites were grown in essentially the same manner as that described by Weinberg and Chalmer, , in which controlled orientation single crystals were grown dendritically in horizontal graphite boats, and the liquid decanted. The crystals were grown and decanted in an atmosphere of tank argon. Before decanting, a sample of the liquid was drawn up in a glass tube and allowed to solidify rapidly. The orientations of the single crystals were such that <loo> was parallel to the growth direction, and (100) in the horizontal plane for lead, and [1101 and (110) respectively for tin. With these orientations long dendrite stalks formed along the bottom of the boat in the dendrite direction (<100> for lead and [I101 for tin) from which secondary branches grew. Only these secondary branches, which grew freely in the liquid from the dendrite stalk to the liquid surface, were used in the measurements. Accordingly, effects due to substrates and oxides on the surface of the liquid need not be considered. THE stored energy and microhardness of a Au-Ag alloy deformed by explosive loading were measured previously as functions of shock pressure&apos; and compared with corresponding data for drawn wires.&apos; The difference of the two processes has been explored further by investigating the annealing behavior of explosively loaded specimens and drawn wires. Sheet specimens, 0.042 in. thick, of a Au-Ag alloy containing 82.6 wt pct Au were explosively loaded in stacks of four.3 Wires prepared from the same melt of alloy were drawn through dies.&apos; The annealing kinetics were determined by microhardness measurements on separate specimens for each annealing temperature and time. Several values of the stored energy were measured by tin-solution calorimetry Experimental details are given elsewhere. Wires were drawn until the microhardness or stored energy equalled the corresponding values of the explosively loaded specimens as nearly as possible. The analysis of Kikuchi pattersns of exct ovientalions from single cryslals and paired Kikuchi lines from single and overlapping crystals is shown to be useful and quanlitalve and is applied to Phase transfovnzcitions including ordering, spinodals, mavten-silic, and nuclealion and growth pyocesses. 112 pinciple, the analysis of exacl orientations enables the crystal system and the Bravais lattice of a crystal to he determined. The advantages of the davk-field imaging technigure for detecting vevy small precipitates are also described. ALTHOUGH Kikuchi electron-diffraction patterns were first observed nearly 40 years ago,&apos; little systematic application seems to have been made of them, until fairly recently during electron microscopy, when their usefulness in contrast experimen and for determining exact orientations8&apos;9 has been pointed out. With the availability of gonio-metric specimen tilting stages it has now become possible to make much wider use of diffraction patterns, particularly the Kikuchi pattern, which is the main subject of this paper. The treatment presented here is not exhaustive but it is hoped that it will stimulate more use of Kikuchi patterns during electron-microscopy investigations. The Kikuchi pattern is formed as a result of Bragg diffraction of the inelastically scattered electrons produced during the interaction of the beam and thick specimens, The important feature of these patterns is that they give an accurate representation of the symmetry of the crystal being investigated, so that it is possible to identify crystal systems and even the Bravais lattice. This means that new structures, e.g., formed in phase transformations, may be identified during normal electron microscopy, so that Kikuchi-pattern analyses considerably extend the uses of the electron microscope. Recent work has also shown that dark-field images are more informative than bright-field images, particularly, for observing small precipitates. The second part of this paper discusses some applications and advantages of dark-field imaging in studies of two-phase systems. 1) DIFFRACTION PATTERNS 1.1) Spot Patterns. Electron-diffraction spot patterns have their limitations because of the importance of the form factor on the intensities and shape of the reciprocal lattice points. Because of the extension of these points into relrods, reflections are possible over a large angular range (+5 deg) and the patterns from thin regions can be complicated because second-layer relrods intersect the reflecting sphere. Spot patterns can thus give only an approximate idea of the crystallography unless the foil is tilted into exact orientation. In this case the spot pattern is symmetrical, with equal numbers of spots on the positive and negative zone directions about the origin. Such cases are necessary for structural analyses and have been used recently to determine the crystal structure of the ordered Ta64C phase." Exact orientation means that the plane of the reciprocal lattice lies exactly normal to the incident beam as shown in Fig. 1(b). It should be noted that in exact orientations the angle of reflection is less than the exact Bragg angle 9 so that the reciprocal lattice points lie to the outside of the sphere, Fig. 1(b). This deviation is denoted by the parameter s and in the usual convention4 s is negative for exact orientations and, of course, zero at the exact reflecting position shown in Fig. l(a). In order to avoid secondary reflections from thickness relrods it is advantageous to work in thicker regions of foils. Diffraction from thick regions may also produce Kikuchi patterns and as dis-

The question whether the kind, rank and grade of coal is in any way determined by the kind or type of plant from which it originated has been a problem since coal was first studied. Some investigators claim that the kind of plants has contributed none of the attributes that characterize the differences found in the various coals; others claim that all differences are caused by the contributing plant; and others hold that only a few characteristics are inherited from the kind of plant from which the coal originated. Most coalologists, however, give this matter no thought. It can easily be shown that the kind of plant which contributed to a coal had a marked influence on its kind and type. A number of factors enter into this problem, and all unrelated ones must be carefully eliminated, including metamorphism caused by the pressure of the cover, earth movements, mountain building and higher temperature. Only the fundamental substance—the plants out of which coal was formed—• and the causative conditions that gave rise to a peat swamp and the conditions imposed upon the plant and the plant substances during the formation of the peat swamp can be considered. Everything else being equal, the question then is, how far do different classes and types of coal owe their differences to different kinds or types of plants? Geologic Age of Coal Coal has been laid down in almost every geological period since the Devonian era. Even as early as the middle Devonian some coal was formed; although of no value it has great scientific significance. The most valuable coal was deposited during the Carboniferous. The coals of England were formed during the Mississippian, and most of the valuable coals of America, Europe and China during the Mississippian and chiefly the Pennsylvanian. From the Permian come the coals of France, Saxony, Thuringia and Schwarzwald in Germany and of Bohemia and of the Ural districts of Russia. From the Mesozoic come the coals

The New Jersey Zinc Zompany operates at Depue, Illinois, an integrated zinc smelting plant using tie vertical retort reduction process. The overall operation comprises green concentrate roasting, sintering, vertical retort smelting and metal refining. In the roasting operation, the fine concentrate is pelletized, the dried pellets fluidized and autogenously roasted with air in a “fluid column” with minimal formation of dust requiring recirculation. The roasted pellets and any associated roaster dust are agglomerated in a rotating drum and laid down, in combination with coal for fuel, on a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine which converts to a semi-fused mass - a physical state more suitable for vertical retort smelting. The smeltins plant of 27 vertical retorts rated at 8 T zinc each per day on average requires the following major processing steps - mix preparation and briquettine, briquet coking, vertical retort reduction, vapor condensation and slab casting of metal. A portion of zinc production is converted to 99.99+ percent purity by boiling and fractional distillation in columns consisting of externally heated, superimposed trays of high-conductivity refractory.

Calculating machines permit the use of the more rapid cotangent and semigraphic solutions of plane triangulation. The results of these methods are as accurate as those of other methods. Simple adjustment of the net, and ease of calculation encourage more complete field work. Errors in field work or in computation are easily localized.

In recent years the problem of sulfur elimination in iron and steel-making has been of increasing importance. This interest has been due to the increasing amounts of sulfur coming into the system via raw materials. As a result, many investigations have been directed at obtaining information pertaining to the rate and mechanism of sulfur removal in the blast furnace as well as measuring appropriate thermodynamic quantities. Chang and Goldmanl as well as others2&apos;3 showed that the process of sulfur transfer from molten carbon-saturated iron to blast furnace-type slags could be considered as two opposing first-order chemical reactions. Recently, Ramachandran et al.4 have shown that during desulfurization electrical neutrality is preserved in both phases and iron and silicon are transferred into the slag concurrently with the evolution of carbon monoxide gas. They concluded that the reaction s + c-+ (0)=(S) + CO(g) does not express the stoichiometry of the sulfur transfer process. As in all previous investigations, these authors studied the process of a net transfer of sulfur from metal to slag across a slag-metal interface. However, no experimental data have previously been obtained for the process of sulfurization. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the sulfurization process, i.e., net transfer of sulfur from slag to metal. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus—The equipment used in this investiga-tion was typical of that used by others.1-3The furnace was a high-frequency induction unit powered by a 35 kw Hg spark gap converter. Fig. 1 shows a schematic diagram of the apparatus. A two-compartment crucible assembly was employed to melt the slag and metal charges; being similar to that used by Ramachandran,4 in size and design. The atmosphere was that produced by reaction of hot graphite with air. Temperature measurements were made by W-Mo thermocouples which were calibrated against a Bureau of Standards Pt - Pt 10 pct Rh couple. Temperature control was always good to * 5°C and in general was much better than this figure. Raw materials used in the experiments were C. P. reagent grade where possible. THE rate of the high-temperature oxidation of pure copper has been measured repeatedly by numerous investigators. It appears to be generally agreed: (I) that at constant temperature, after the initial stages of oxidation have been passed and the scale has attained a substantial depth, the film thickness increases in proportion to the square root of the time of oxidation; and (2) that for any given period of oxidation the logarithm of the square of the film thickness is proportional to the reciprocal of the absolute temperature of oxidation.&apos; These relationships are explained upon the basis that the rate of diffusion of copper to the external surface of the film is the controlling factor in establishing the rate of growth. Extensive studies have been devoted also to the mechanism and rates of the early stages of oxidation. There is thus available a reasonably well established theory of the oxidation of pure copper upon which to construct an explanation of the more complex oxidation of copper alloys. Few general principles have as yet emerged from the chaos of observations that have been reported in the field of the oxidation of alloys.2 It is evident, however, that the copper alloys may be divided into two main groups, whose oxidation characteristics are distinguish able. The first group, composed of the alloys with the noble metals, forms substantially pure copper oxide scales; the alloying element is concentrated within the residual metal, and sometimes particles of almost pure noble metal are found in the scales completely surrounded by copper oxide. In the second group, composed of the alloys of copper with the baser metals, the alloying element appears as an oxide in the scale, often in greater concentration than in the alloy itself and sometimes to the exclusion of copper oxide. The oxide scales of the latter class have been found to be made up of one, two, and sometimes more distinguishable layers of which the innermost is often metallic in character, composed of particles of the oxide of the alloying element embedded in essentially pure copper and known as the subscale or zone of internal oxidation. The need for a thorough quantitative study of these modes of oxidation is evident. Since it is apparent that several mechanisms must be cooperating to produce the complex oxide scales found on copper alloys, the analysis of the process into its several simple operations should prove instructive. Fortunately, it is possible experimentally to produce internal oxidation in the absence of an external scale; this permits the isolation and intensive study of one of the steps in the oxidation process. MUCH crude oil, as produced from the well, carries varying amounts of water, which may be present as free water in&apos; globules sufficiently large to settle out, in time, if the fluid is allowed to stand, or as an emulsion formed by myriads of minute water particles, each surrounded and entrapped by a film of oil through which it cannot break under the action of gravity alone. Such an emulsified mixture of oil and water is commonly termed "cut oil." When such an emulsion is subjected, under proper conditions, to the .influence of a high-potential alternating-current field, the minute water particles rupture the enveloping oil films and coalesce into larger water droplets this procedure continuing until all the water is freed into drops of such size that they readily settle out. This action has been photographed by the micro-moving-picture camera; under, the microscope, the breaking-up of the emulsion, as described, is seen to be accomplished in a few seconds. The low power requirements of the process, from records of commercial plants, substantiate the theory that the action is that of a multitude of electrical condensers in series, rather than that of a number of conducting paths. The minute water particles serve as the metallic elements, or plates, of the condensers and the separating oil acts as the dielectric. Such surface charges as the particles may have are removed, and the intervening oil is broken, probably electrically by the voltage and mechanically by the attractive force between adjacent oppositely electrified particles. The principle of breaking up an emulsion under the influence of an alternating electric field was discovered by F. G. Cottrell and Buckner Speed, through experiments conducted, at the University of California, which resulted in a plant being installed on the property of the Lucile Oil Co. in the Coalinga field, California, early in 1909. This plant was able to reduce 14-per cent. emulsion to less than 2-per cent. with commercial success.

It is investigated whether a model of sphere packing permits the computation of the lattice parameters and their variation with concentration in various a phases; it does, except in phases containing silicon. Several observations indicate that a particular role is played by the "E-atoms" in the lattice. THE phase is formed by many alloys of the transition elements.&apos;-&apos; Its structure has been described by Bergman and Shoemaker,5,8 Dickins, Douglas, and Taylor,7 and Kasper, Decker, and elanger.&apos; There are five kinds of crystallographically equivalent positions for the 30 atoms in the unit cell which have been designated by these authors I, 11, 111, IV, and V or, in the same sequence, A, B, C,D, and E, as shown in Fig, 1. For the purposes of the present paper two elements of the lattice will be discussed separately: The lattice planes perpendicular to the c-axis which are made up by the atoms A, B, C, and D and which determine the a-parameter; and the close-packed "vertical rows" of E-atoms which determine the c-parameter. asper,9 and Frank and kasper10 described the a phase and other complex structures as sphere packings. In these papers particular attention is paid to the coordination polyhedra. Lattice positions with an equal number of nearest neighbors are considered equivalent regardless of their crystallo-graphic description. This seems to work very well for the explanation of ordering phenomena in the a phase as far as information on this is available." If the description of the phase as a sphere packing is valid it should be possible to draw two further conclusions: 1) It should be possible to calculate the lattice parameters from the atomic radii of the components, and 2) It should be possible to predict the variation of the lattice parameters with concentration within one phase field. Both points are discussed in this paper. PROCEDURE Measurements of lattice constants were done with a symmetrical back-reflection X-ray camera. With Cr-radiation, about a dozen a1 lines could be observed with most samples. From the (550/710)- and 720-lines the a-value was computed. With this value the c-parameter was calculated from the (333)- and (413)-lines. Finally, the position of all the other lines was computed from the lattice parameters thus obtained. In this way the validity of the indexing could be checked and, at the same time, this proce- dure gave an estimate of the accuracy of the lattice parameters. A correction was made for film shrinkage. The atomic radii used in the computations are the Goldschmidt radii for coordination number 12. Actually, some of the atoms have a coordination number of 14 or 15, but the error thereby introduced is small. * For the computation of lattice constants from the atomic radii an "average atomic radius" of all components was used, i.e., complete disorder was assumed. Although this seems to be true for some systems like OS-Cr,4 it is not true in others.11,13,14 The ordering model, however, which has been suggested by Kasper on the basis of extensive research lets both kinds of atoms contribute to both the &apos;&apos;vertical rows" and the lattice planes perpendicular to them, so that even with ordering of this kind the assumption of complete disorder cannot introduce a very serious error in calculating lattice parameters. This paper is the outcome of an extended investigation carried out in association with Dr. L. Slater. The inquiry had been continued in various directions and a number of results are quoted from an investigation recently completed by S. H. Jenkins. In projecting the work some five years ago, the author had in view a general attack on the problem of the spontaneous combustion of coal from an angle that had received little attention. The basic idea was to obtain a "slow motion study" of the active combustion of coal. This included an examination of the conditions prevailing in a mass of coal at the moment when active combustion ceases. It was thought that, if the factors governing the extinction of combustion in coal could be definitely established, it might offer an explanation of the manner in which the spontaneous combustion of coal originates. The inquiry arose from a detailed study of the properties of fusain that the author began in 1918. Fusain seemed to possess characteristics quite distinct from the coal with which it was associated, for if it were collected into a heap and one portion were heated by a small flame the combustion would traverse the whole mass. This combustion was not accompanied by smoke and passed slowly through the heap of material. Later, it was found that coals, including anthracites, would behave in a similar manner provided they were in the form of powder and that the particles were smaller than a certain size. The limiting size of particles is a definite characteristic of the coals investigated. In view of the fact that fusain exists with coal in a state that enables it to undergo this particular form of combustion, it must be assumed, sometimes, to play a definite part in the spontaneous combustion of coal in the goaf (waste). Tables 1 and 2 contain the analyses of samples of dust collected from a mine and from a dust collector. Some idea of the degree of fineness of the particles of fusain may be obtained from a study of the analyses of the dust from the dust collector; 80 per cent. of the dust would pass through a 200-mesh screen while the fusain was concentrated in the finest dust. The material that passed through a 90-mesh screen contained 54 per cent. of fusain while that between a 30- and a 90-mesh only con-

Rock downhole is known to be lesc. drillable than when brought to the surface. This must be ascribed mainly to the presence under downhole conditions of a pressure differential across already made chips, which hinders their being lifted. The pressure differential has partly a static and partly a dynamic origin. Balling-up of bits is another consequence of this pressure differerztial. Reduction in penetration rate owing to an increase in the strength of the rock is governed by the difference between the mud pressure and the pressure of the for/nation pore liquid. Rotationally symmetric geostatic stresses have 170 effect on drillability. Fracture of rock when drilling will be brille in most cases. The above is supported by laboratory drilling experiments with drag bill and roller bits an elevated mud, pore, and confining pressures On rocks differing in strength and permeability. INTRODUCTION In oil well drilling drillability of rock is found to decrease with increasing depth of the hole. Naturally deep rock will be more compacted and, therefore, harder to drill than shallow rock of the same type. However, apart from this the drillability of a sample of deep and compacted rock brought to the surface is generally much higher than in its original location downhole. In view of the economic implications of this reduction in drillability, it seems worthwhile to analyze its causes. The origin clearly has to be sought in the difference of environment. The only conceivable factors would seem to be the presence of mud under pressure, the pressure of the formation pore liquid, and the overburden of the rock. Down the borehole the rock is compressed triaxially by mud pressure and overburden. It is well known that the strength of rock is increased when confined by external pressure1. Various authors have, therefore, ascribed the difference in drillability mainly to the strengthening of rock by triaxial compression. Another factor, mentioned by Bobo and Hoch5, is that forces. including "pressure differential forces", tend to hold a dislodged particle in place. However, the conditions determining their magnitude are not clarified nor is their effect on drilling rate assessed. In the laboratory, drilling experiments on pressurized samples of rock yielded evidence that pressure differential forces holding the chips down are the major factor in reducing rate at depth. This paper describes the experiments and shows how the results enable both a qualitative and a quantitative interpretation of the factors determining the effect of chip hold-down on drilling rate. The implication with respect to balling-up and jet action is also discussed. The greatcr part of the experiments were performed in the pressure vessel shown in Fig. 1. The spacc between the sample of rock and the vesscl is divided by "0" rings into three separate chambers. The rock sample is confined laterally by pressurized oil in thc middle chamber. Penetration of oil into the sample is prevented by partly jacketing it with brass foil. Thc pressure of the drilling fluid in the hole can be adjusted via the upper chamber. Permeable rock specimens arc water saturated before being drilled. With a properly plastering mud as drilling fluid the pressure of the pore water can be adjusted independently via the lower chamber.
