Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other prin¬cipal calcium sulfate mineral, has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhy¬drous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CaSo4.2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. Of most importance, however, is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 '21H20) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advan¬tage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which, when mixed with water, would form a putty that could be plastered on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of the quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term land plaster for ground gypsum was coined and has remained in use. Another cementitious material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered; today it has almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $2 Gpy as illustrated in [Table 1].

THIS paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in commercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordan,4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. ANALYSIS OF STERLING SILVER Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same analysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a stand¬ard alloy is during the reign of Henry II in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. A study was conducted for the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide information which will lead to an increase in the recycling of mineral materials, in order to help conserve the Nation's mineral resources. Data were collected on energy requirements to recycle prompt industrial and obsolete scrap for nine metal commodities: Iron and steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, lead, stainless steel, titanium, tin, and nickel and nickel alloys. Major process routes for recycling were considered, starting from the first collection point through scrap preparation, transportation, smelting and/or refining to the molten metal, ingot, or other semi- finished form approximately equivalent to a primary metal of a similar composition. Available data for 1976 were collected on the amounts of each metal commodity recycled by major scrap categories. In addition, energy requirements were estimated for separating municipal solid wastes into four major categories: Refuse-derived fuel, and magnetic, aluminum, and glass cullet fractions. Finally, areas of research were identified to enhance recycling and/or increase the efficiency of energy use.

The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

We report the studies of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM FC) and hydrogen storage materials at McMaster University for the last 14 years. From the initial investigation of ionic conduction mechanism to the revelation of the origin of non-Arrhenius temperature dependence, as well as the synthesis and characterization of high temperature polymer electrolytes, both experimental and theoretical works have been compiled for the fuel cell membranes. In addition to the discovery of suppressed ionic conduction in Electrode-Membrane Assembly (EMA) and novel hydrocarbon PEMs based on micro-emulsion, the first evidence of hydrogen adsorption saturation by carbon nano-tubes was also achieved, which has been the bottleneck for the application of PEM FC. Prior to our study, a number of controversial publications have claimed the hydrogen capacity of these materials to be between 0.1 to 10.0 wt.%, and none demonstrated a plateau of adsorption with pressure that is consistent with monolayer saturation. Others suggested that the tube bundle structure is opened under high pressure to enable higher adsorption on newly uncovered surfaces, but received no confirmation. Using our home made high-pressure instrument with in-situ electrical probes, we found that a plateau is nearly achieved at about 300 atm in the room temperature isotherm, and that nanotube bundles actually compress with pressure instead of splitting, using in-situ electrical measurements.

IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established .R3 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resinsmay serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. The interest in spark plasma sintering has been growing considerable over the past few years. This has been brought about by the unique advantages of the process, which include reduced sintering temperatures and times and the production of materials with unique microstructures and properties. Despite its current reputation as an outstanding process that has solved major problems such as nano-powder consolidation, it has so far been largely limited to the manufacture of simple shapes, due to its inherent geometric configuration. In this paper we present preliminary results on spark plasma "extrusion" that can allow the production of extended geometries via electric-current processing. Preliminary results on the processing and microstructure of spark plasma extruded aluminum are discussed.

AN insistent and steadily growing demand is evident for the broadening of undergraduate curricula in engineering. Among suggested additions are training in public speaking, report writing, business law and contracts, accounting, finance, money and banking, scientific management, economics, social and labor problems, psychology, and ethics. The demand for these subjects comes from the older engineers and from the industries that employ our graduates. Of course, many of the men who suggest such changes are influenced largely by their personal needs and contacts, but the demand is sufficiently widespread to merit serious study by educators. In fact, many educators themselves concur in the proposals for broader training. These matters were examined intensively a few years ago in an exhaustive study of engineering education. Opinion at that time was rather strongly against any profound change. Since then, however, the whole economic system has undergone violent disruption. Even if recommendations made a few years ago were appropriate to the conditions then- obtaining, the enormously changed conditions of the present make advisable a further careful study of this problem. In recent years, mergers, to reduce costs, have sharply limited the number of engineers employed and have thereby intensified the struggle to secure positions. In this stiffer competition, engineers with the most adequate training undoubtedly fare the best.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining, prepara- tion, and utilization of coal. This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee, which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee. In some instances; engi- neers from other allied countries cooperated. The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter, Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator. The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey, in charge, J. W. Buch, Thomas Fraser, L. L. Newman, and L. D. Schmidt of the Bureau of Minos; H. H. Lowry, Director of the Coal Research Laboratory, Carnegie Institute of Technology; H. J. Rose, Vice-President and Director of Research, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc.; and F. H. Reed, Chief Chemist, Illinois Geological Survey. E. 0. "In the past, smelting and refining of the precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. This is not surprising when one considers that the manpower, space and capital components of a gold refinery at an operating mine can be several orders of magnitude smaller than other unit operations at the same location. This philosophy is changing however, as economic and environmental pressure are forcing a re-evaluation of all aspects of gold mining and milling.This paper describes and evaluates three furnace technologies available and used by precious metal operators. The operation of arc, induction, and reverberatory furnaces are discussed and their strengths and weaknesses with respect to capital cost, impurity removal, slag quality, and environmental concerns highlighted.INTRODUCTIONIn the past, smelting and refining of precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. This is not surprising when one considers that the manpower, space, and capital components of a gold refinery at an operating mine can be several orders of magnitude smaller than other unit operations at the same location. Generally, gold producers will spend a great deal of effort to squeeze the last drop of efficiency out of a leach or grinding circuit via simulation or testwork but will design and build the refinery based upon past practices or industry standards. That past practices or industry standards will provide a functional refinery is undisputed; that this philosophy achieves the efficiencies that are possible or demanded in other plant operations is debatable.Environmental and worker hygiene requirements are considerations as well. Pollution control equipment can become a substantial contributor to both the capital and operating costs of a refinery and furnace selection has a marked influence upon the type and cost of this equipment. Slag characteristics and subsequent processing options available also play a role in furnace selection as precious metal slag losses and the recovery effort can greatly influence the cost / benefit analysis of a particular technology."

What is a nugget effect? In the early development of geostatistics, the term ?nugget effect? was coined for the apparent discontinuity at the beginning of many semi-variogram graphs. This name was chosen to reflect the large differences found between neighbouring samples in ?nuggety? mineralizations such as Wits gold reefs. Geostatistical theory assumes that the difference between a sampled value and a potential repeat sample at the same location is actually zero. Included in this ?nugget effect? would be true variation between contiguous samples due to the nature of the mineralization, micro-fracturing, nugget or crystal size and so on. Also included in the nugget effect would be any ?random? sampling variation which might occur due to the method in which the sample was taken, the adequacy of the sample size, the assaying process, etc. Arguments were put forward that ?sampling errors? actually exist at zero distance. Some geostatistical schools actually maintain that ?nugget effect? is all sampling error. This would imply that ?perfect? sampling would eliminate the nugget effect entirely. There is now a dichotomy both in the geostatistical world and in the software packages provided for geostatistical analyses. It may seem academic to argue over whether the semi-variogram model should take a value of zero, a value equal to the nugget effect or a partial value at distance zero. However, the decision can have a profound effect on both the estimated resource and in our confidence on that resource. Whereas most geostatistical texts define the semi-variogram model as taking the value of zero at zero distance, others imply that the full nugget effect should be used at zero distance. For example: ?The nugget effect refers to the nonzero intercept of the variogram and is an overall estimate of error caused by measurement inaccuracy and environmental variability occurring at fine enough scales to be unresolved by the sampling interval3. ?Christensen4 has shown that the ?nugget effect?, or non-zero variance at the origin of the sernivariogram, can be reproduced by a measurement error model. ?The nugget effect is considered random noise and may represent short-scale variability, measurement error, sample rate, etc.5. In many training texts and web courses, the definition of the semi-variogram is ambiguous as the formulae for semi-variogram models is not actually specified at zero distance6,7,8.

This paper reviews progress in equipment design and in the techniques applied to mine lighting in Great Britain. The incidence of the disease miner's nystagmus, which was a major source of concern only a few years ago, has now diminished, largely owing to improvements in standards of lighting in mines. The reorganisation of the coal mining industry, involving increasing mech-anisation, together with new safety legislation, has brought about the widespread use of mains electric lighting underground. An account is given of some of the results of research to determine the lighting conditions needed for compliance with the compulsory legal requirement of "sufficient and suitable" general lighting at specific localities in British mines. Some details are given of the techniques applied and the results of recent research in the problem of glare from miners' cap lamps. Of the various factors in the working environment of the miner, it is true to say that lighting is seldom given attention comparable with that devoted to other factors, such as dust, heat and humidity, or atmospheric gas content. No doubt one reason for this lies in the ability of the human eye to adapt itself to low brightness levels. Be that as it may, the fact is that at the turn of the 20th century the miner's working light improved little throughout the centuries during which mining technology has developed. Indeed, in coal mines which encounter a methane explosion hazard, flame safety lamps, with a luminous intensity less than one candle power, were virtually the sole means of lighting during almost the whole of the 19th century. The 20th century has witnessed a substantial improvement in lighting techniques underground in coal and metalliferous mining. In Great Britain the general pattern has been one of standards periodically raised by the implementation of Statutory Regulations imposed under successive hlines Acts, but it is fair to add that the more progressive mining companies usually anticipated the Statutory Regulations, which when they have been put into effect have served to turn into general practice what was already being done at the better mines. In earlier years, official requirements were limited to the specification of approved lamp designs, with stipulated minimum values of luminous intensity and light output, but more recently the necessity of satisfactory maintenance of standards during service has been recognized, and the current regulations not only require that a maintenance organisation should exist, but also specify a maximum permissible depreciation below initial approval standards.'

THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel, iron and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760°C.oin a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and subsequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus is shown in Figs. I and 2. It consisted of two units, a degassing system and an analytical system. Each had a bake-out oven, as shown surrounding the systems in the sketches. The system will be traced, starting from the sample in the degassing system. A water-cooled quartz chamber surrounded the sample. The high-frequency coil, which heated the sample, extended only around this chamber and was cooled by an air blast. High-frequency power of 0800-meter wave length was obtained from a self-rectifying oscillator circuit with a maximum power input of 20 kw. A graded seal connected the quartz to the rest of the apparatus, which was of hard' glass. The temperature of the molybdenum sample was observed by an optical pyrometer through an optical window about 40 cm. distant from the sample. Since the object viewed under these conditions was not 'a black body, true temperature was not observed, but the so-called "brightness temperature." The correction of this to true temperature is discussed in a later section. The apparatus was taken apart just above the graded seal; the quartz chamber was slipped off, washed with nitric acid, water and alcohol, and dried by an air stream. The old sample was removed by

The "PORTA VENEZIA" STATION will be the most important in the link and it will he also the largest underground project of the whole railway transport network in Lomhardy. The particular conditions of the soil and the collocation of site in the center of Milano have required new technologies and the technical solution applied to this job is called "Cellular Arch Method" by its designer Prof. P. Lunardi. Our sincere thanks go to Prof. P. Lunardi and Eng. E.M. Pizzarotti of Rocksoil, Milano who have kindly furnished us a technical description of this method. Eng. Pizzarotti was the guide during the visit and gave all the technical explanations to the delegates. THE "VENEZIA" STATION IN THE 2PB SECTION OF THE RAILWAY LINK The excavation of cavities in loose ground, exceeding a certain dimension and at shallow depth, is not feasible using traditional methods: in fact it is not possible to consolidate the ground around the cavity in such a way that homogeneity and resistance is sufficiently guaranteed.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

Based on the commercial computational fluid dynamics software, Fluent, the fluid flow and temperature field in an iron-bath reactor were simulated numerically, and the effects of top-blown and side-blown operating parameters on the mixing time of iron bath, distribution range of oxygen in top space, and post-combustion ratio were investigated. The simulated results showed that the mixing time of iron bath increased initially and then decreased with the increase of inclined degree and immersion depth of side-blown lance. The distribution range of oxygen became wider as pulling the top lance away from the iron bath. Furthermore, post-combustion ratio was reduced given the top lance was too close the bath. The simulation results provide theoretical base for the process optimization of iron-bath reactor and further development of new type iron-bath smelting reduction process.

THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. It is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. Synopsis of Biological and Chemical Facts The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microor- ganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life—proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins— may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals.
