The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

A few studies on the relationship of the fusion temperature of the ash on coke to that of the corresponding coal have been made on commercial high-temperature cokes. H. J. Rose3/ in 1921 compared the fusion temperatures of the ashes of 10 coals and the cokes produced from them and concluded that they were in such hose agreement that either figure could be used. More recently, Quarfort4/ found that the ash of coke fused at a somewhat lower temperature than that of the original coal. As the ash of a coal and that off tie coke produced therefrom have the same origin their chemical composition should be identical, provided that carbonization has not altered the inorganic, or ash-forming, constituents of the coal, and such alteration seems highly improbable. However, it has been shown5/ that coke is liable to contamination by iron during crushing and grinding preparatory to sampling. Pieters6/ found that coke ash was contaminated in this manner up to 0.4 percent. Extraneous iron would lower the ash-fusion temperature because such iron may form ferrous silicate, which is readily fusible.7/ These results provide a basis for the prediction that the ash of coke will fuse at a lower temperature than that of the corresponding coal, especially if the fine grinding of the coke was done by rubbing -surfaces of iron, as in a disk pulverizer or bucking plate.

The purpose of this study is to develop designs to facilitate and accelerate auger rotation stoppage (and auger rotation start up so as to promote auger disengagement during auger miner repositioning) and to provide a time delay and warning signal prior to auger start up to permit any miner s near the augers to get away from the augers before they start rotating. In the underground coal mines in the U.S., there are four auger miners that are currently in use. They are the Jeffrey 100L (see Figure 1-1) and 100M (see Figure 1-2), and the Wilcox WCM and the MK20A (see Figure 1-3).

The Bureau of Mines studied the potential availability of primary antimony (Sb) from demonstrated resources in 21 mines and deposits in market economy countries (MEC's). Twelve of these properties were evaluated as producers and nine as non- producers. The 21 studied properties contain 499,600 mt Sb as demonstrated resources, of which 304,000 mt is recoverable as antimony metal; another 973,500 mt Sb is contained in inferred resources. Recoverable antimony from demonstrated U.S. deposits is only 10,700 mt, just 3.5 pct of the MEC total. Domestic production of primary antimony from operating mines has averaged only 561 mt/yr over the 10-yr period 1975-84. This represents just over 5 pct of total U.S. consumption of primary antimony, which averaged 11,081 mt/yr during the same period. The United States will thus continue to rely on imported ores andlor concentrates, antimony oxides, and metal to satisfy domestic industrial requirements. At production costs up to $1.15/lb Sb, 110,000 mt of refined antimony is potentially available from 10 of the 21 studied properties. At $2/lb, 294,000 mt Sb is available, and at $3/lb, the total rises to 304,000 mt Sb available from all evaluated producers of refined antimony.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers, mounted in suspension components, can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a global positioning system (GPS) is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck. This research is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) project called "Engineering controls for reduction of jolting/jarring injuries in surface mines." NIOSH is investigating how the work environment of haulage truck drivers can be improved. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that, between 1986 and 1995, 60% of the back injuries were to haulage truck drivers in metal/nonmetal surface mining. Personnel from Phelps Dodge suggested that combining acceleration data with information obtained from a GPS could generate results with a variety of uses. Therefore, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) began investigating how to tie acceleration and GPS data together. It was originally thought that this tool would be used primarily for road and truck maintenance. However, as research progressed, it became apparent that it would also be useful in providing feedback about equipment operations and identifying unusual causes of jolting. Experimental approach Available components that function well by themselves were linked for the purpose of proof of concept. Using a Modular Mining Systems (MMS) product called Vital Signs, SRL researchers took an Aero-Marine Products (AMP) acceleration recorder and hardwired it to MMS Dispatch equipment already installed on a truck. AMP is one of several manufacturers of acceleration recorders frequently used to monitor freight during shipping. MMS Dispatch is used for production accounting and truck dispatching and uses GPS tracking. Through Vital Signs, an analog or digital alarm signal can be recorded. Steve Rhoades, of MMS, wrote unique code that links the Vitals Signs data and GPS location and stores this data in an ASCII log file. SRL researchers installed the equipment in a Caterpillar 793 haul truck. The result was a working prototype. Figures 1 and 2 show the instrument installation in the truck. Discussion From 8:30 pm on Sept. 14, 1998 until 6:50 am on Sept. 15 1998, 899 jolts above a threshold of 2 g (1 g is the acceleration of gravity. The writer of this paper, however, is alone responsible for statements herein contained and since he has often found it necessary to rationalize apparently conflicting opinions of recognized authorities on this little-known subject, he will welcome constructive criticism from the trade.Two types of diamond are extensively used for industrial purposes. One type, known as bort or bortz (boort, boart, bowr, etc.), consists of diamonds of the gem variety but unfit for cutting into gems. They may be colorless, yellow, brown, or gray. The other type, carbonado, known in the trade as ""carbon"" or ""black diamond,"" differs greatly from the white diamond, being opaque and apparently amorphous or noncrystalline. Actually, instead of forming a large single crystal as in a gem stone, carbon diamond comprises a mass of microscopic crystals that interlock to form a tough, homogeneous material with no planes of cleavage. It is found in various colors -- black, dark green, brown, and gray -- but usually it has .a dark lustrous black surface, with a resinoid or submetallic appearance, often resembling fine-grained steel. Upon exposure to the air the broken surface gradually darkens to an ash-gray color. Ballas is a special type of carbonado in which the crystals are definitely-oriented around a central nucleus. They are harder and tougher than ordinary carbonado but are much scarcer. The Cape ballas is reputed to be not quite so tough as Brazilian ballas but tougher than carbon or bort.The diamond crystals are isometric and take a variety of forms. The cleavage is octahedral and well marked. A crack is easily -started parallel to an octahedral face, and bort or gem diamonds are notoriously brittle, especially when subjected to sudden shock. Even carbonado, while it has a high resistance to slowly applied pressures, may be chipped or broken by a sharp blow.Exposed to radioactive rays, the diamond becomes phosphorescent; this property is often utilized to distinguish it from quartz, topaz, or glass. The unusually high refractive index likewise aids in its identification in the case of a more or less transparent stone. At the temperature of the electric arc, diamond is converted into graphite, another form of Carbon but one of the softest mineral substances. At a much lower temperature, as low as 1,5620 F., the diamond may be burned like ordinary carbon in an atmosphere of oxygen, and according to some authorities there is danger of burning a diamond if overheated even in air."

Experiments initiated by the Bureau of Mines on August 26. 1969, and recent work of others, have demonstrated the effectiveness of ventilation for controlling concentrations of respirable coal mine dust. Substantial reductions in dust concentrations have been attained by increasing the volume and rate of air movement across the face and by controlling the airflow pattern. Ventilation experiments conducted by the Bureau using high-pressure fans as auxiliary ventilation units showed that lace-generated dust could he effectively controlled in five mines employing continuous mining machines. Additional data was obtained on industry installations in two mines using similar ventilation systems. By maintaining an airflow approaching 100 fpm across the entry, the experimental system reduced the concentration of respirable dust by factors as great as 6.4. In all mines where the system was used the face-generated dust concentrations were reduced to below 3 mg/m3. Total respirable dust in two cases was above the 3 mg/m value because of the dust content of the intake air. In some mines. depending upon the type of coal being mined and other dust control factors in use, it was possible to Obtain concentrations of less than 2 mg/m Although the technology for the application of the dust control system investigated is readily available, it is evident that additional engineering studies should he made in each mine where the system is to be applied.

For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines has been investigating fires and explosions in mines, tunnels, buildings, and hazardous processes of various kinds. Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents in many hazardous processes require the collection and analysis of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the sources of ignition. Complex mixtures of gases often encountered in mines, tunnels, and industrial processes may well presage imminent danger from explosions. This report discusses some practicable methods of utilizing the analyses of samples of complex mixtures of gases in their application to the many problems that arise from their presence.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. The research has demonstrated that the ventilation of large-opening mines improves significantly by including ventilation requirements in the mine planning process and implementing somepractical techniques during mining. Planning the location of long pillars to reduce the number of crosscuts between intake airways and return airways, positioning auxiliary fans in their proper locations, and establishing ventilation stoppings with minimal leakage all significantly improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. Mine operators that adopt these techniques in the mine ventilation plan will reduce mineworkers’ exposure to airborne contaminants.

A laboratory study assessed the impacts of water spray pressure, face ventilation quantity, and line brattice setback distance on respirable dust and SF6 tracer gas concentrations around a continuous mining machine using a sprayfan or directional spray system. Dust levels were measured at locations representing the mining machine operator and the standard and off-standard shuttle car operators, and in the return airway. The results showed that changes in all three independent variables significantly affected log-transformed dust levels at the three operator sampling locations. Changes in setback distance impacted return airway dust levels. Laboratory testing also identified numerous variable interactions affecting dust levels. Tracer gas levels were measured on the left and right sides of the cutting drum and in the return. Untransformed gas levels around the cutting drum were significantly affected by changes in water pressure, face ventilation quantity, and setback distance. Only a few interactions were identified that significantly affected these concentrations. Gas levels in the return airway were grouped by face ventilation quantity. Return gas levels measured at the low curtain quantity were generally unaffected by changes in water pressure or curtain setback distance. At the high curtain quantity, return airway gas levels were affected by curtain setback distance. A field study was conducted to assess the impact of these parameters in an actual mining operation. These data showed that respirable dust levels may have been impacted by a change in water pressure and, to a lesser extent, by an increase in curtain setback distance. A series of tracer gas pulse tests were also conducted during this study. The results showed that effectiveness of the face ventilation was impacted by changes in curtain flow quantity and setback distance. Laboratory testing supported similar conclusions.

The Snettisham Peninsula, 30 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska, was studied by the Bureau of Hines to obtain basic information about the size, grade, and metallurgical characteristics of a large basic intrusive containing titaniferous magnetite. The investigation, which was part of a continuing program to determine the potential reserves of iron and titanium ores in Alaska, included transit and magnetometer surveys, followed by diamond core drilling and metallurgical testing. The magnetic attraction of a part of the Snettisharn Peninsula is noted on early navigational charts prepared by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Reconnaissance examinations by the Geological Survey and a preliminary dip needle survey by the Territorial Department of Mines indicated the general nature of the basic intrusive, but little was known as to the grade and extent of the magnetite mineralization. The detailed survey by the Bureau of Mines proved an area of approximately 390 acres in which generally high magnetic anomalies with exceptionally high localized anomalies occur. Subsequent drilling across B representative section of the deposit yielded core samples, which assayed from 11 percent to over 45 percent total iron. A large sample of core composited to represent the drilled portion of the de-posit assayed 18.9 percent Fe, 2.6 percent Ti02, and 0.29 percent S, 0.32 percent P, and 0.05 percent v.

In 2006, 14,885 mining operations reported employment data to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Almost half (48.2%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (30.7%), coal mines (14.2%), nonmetal mines (5.0%), and metal mines (1.9%).

To study continuous operation of the heavy liquid separation (HLS) of minerals, the Bureau of Mines concentrated spodumene from a typical ore. The studies included heavy liquid concentration, removal of the heavy liquid from the mineral products, and recovery of the heavy liquid for reuse. The research program examined the influence of feed moisture, steam consumption, stripping time, and condition of steam. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying 92 to 95 percent spodumene and indicated mineral recoveries of 86 to 89 percent. Continuous filtration and steam stripping produced mineral products containing less than I pound of heavy liquid tetrabromoethane (TBE) per ton of material. Problems unique to this process are discussed, including heavy liquid properties and viscosity, toxicity, material handling hazards, and safety precautions.

The use of liquid hydrogen as a high-energy fuel introduces numerous hazards not ordinarily associated with the use of other more conventional fuels. These hazards are attributable to the unique properties of hydrogen in the liquid and gas states (table 1). Since little work has been conducted on explosion and related hazards of cryogenic fuels, a research program was undertaken to obtain basic data on such dangers for hydrogen and other combustibles under these conditions. These data were used to outline emergency procedures for protecting personnel and equipment when an accidental spillage of liquid hydrogen occurs and to establish a quantity-distance table for the storage of this fuel. The vaporization of liquid hydrogen from a surface is treated as a prob¬lem in heat transfer theory. Two extreme cases are briefly considered: (1) The transfer of heat occurs at constant temperature drop between, the boiling liquid and the hot surface, and (2) the transfer of heat is limited by the rate at which it can flow to the surface from a hot insulating medium. The available data indicate that the former case (1) is applicable when vaporizing from a conducting surface and, initially, when vaporizing from an insulating medium; the latter case (2) is applicable after initial flash vaporization has occurred from the insulating medium. The vaporization rate determines in part the rate at which flammable hydrogen vapor-air mixtures are formed above a spill area. However, the rates at which heat is transferred to the vapor, and air is brought in contact with it also are of importance. Accordingly, the distribution of flammable mixtures above a spill area was determined experimentally. In general, flammable mixtures were found to be both above and within the visible vapor cloud.

A procedure was developed for the separation of lead and sulfur in industrial concentrates of galena by a combination of chlorination and fused - salt electrolysis . Galena could not be satisfactorily electrolyzed in the various media tried ; however , when it was treated with chlorine the resulting lead chloride could be effectively separated electrically into lead and chlorine . An apparatus was designed and constructed to chlorinate galena and to volatilize simultaneously most of the chloridized impurities . By electrolyzing the chlorinated concentrate , a high percentage of lead was recovered . Anodic chlorine was drawn from the cell and was used to chlorinate new feed . In many runs , the recovered metal analyzed from 99.8 to 99.9 percent lead . Lead was also distributed as a chloride in the bath , and a small portion was in the volatile fraction produced during the chlorination step . During a tinuous operation , only 0.1 percent of the total lead was discarded ; 99.9 percent was accounted for in the metal , electrolytic bath , and washed or leached chlorination condensate which was essentially lead chloride . About 95 percent of the sulfur from the galena was recovered as a byproduct of over 90 - percent grade .

In its search for strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Rutherford Mine property in Amelia County, Va. The property was visited by F. W. Horton, mining engineer, and Margaret Fuller Boos, mineral technologist, of the Bureau of Mines, in company with Eugene Dawson, of the War Production Board, on July 16-11, 1943. An exploration program by the Bureau was recommended, and work was started on July 28, 1943, and continued until September 16, 1943. A total of 1,250 feet was diamond drilled in 5 holes on the property.

Low-cost housing, like automobiles, should be appraised in the light not merely of first cost but of upkeep as well. Even more important than the number of miles the family car will go on a gallon of gasoline is the number of days the family home can be kept comfortable on a ton of fuel. A furnace tender who tossed every third shovelful of coal into the ashcan would lose his job promptly, but the effect is the same when homes continue year after year to pour out precious heat through uninsulated roofs and walls, Greater economy in household heating means even more to the national economy than to the individual, especially now that we are preparing for defense. Our fuel resources, although large, should be conserved. If less fuel is used for civilian needs, augmented requirements for defense can be met without unduly increasing the number of men needed at the coal mines and oil ells or adding new producing units that might complicate ultimate readjustment to peacetime conditions when the emergency is past and over-expansion of many industries brings new problems if unnecessary demands for transportation facilities are reduced, public carriers will be able to haul more munitions, and manpower needed for national defense will be released; and by protecting workers from health hazards in their homes additional man-hours of productive effort will be gained. Moreover, reducing the running expenses of houses by proper heat insulation helps home owners to maintain payments on property, and by minimizing foreclosures helps to stabilize the financial structure of the country. In short, here is a situation where the interests of the individual and the Nation are identical and the greatest good for the greatest number is obtained without sacrifice to anyone.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the three significant coal beds in Greene County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 12.5 million tons of coal was produced in Greene County in 1956, of which approximately 10 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 8 cleaning plants. The Bureau of Mines has estimated that 3.5 billion tons of recoverable coal remained in the county as of January 1, 1954.

MIGRATOM is a third-generation PC-based computer program developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for geophysical tomography. Like its predecessors, BOMTOM and BOMCRATR, MIGRA TOM was developed to enable users to address a variety of mining-related problems by mathematically reconstructing the distribution of physical properties in a rock mass, using measurements of travel time or amplitude of wave energy propagated through the rock mass. Examples of applications include lithologic characterization, fracture detection, fluid monitoring, stress evaluation, and blast assessment. The resolution and accuracy of tomographic reconstructions generally depend very strongly on the geometry of source and receiver locations. In many practical applications, such as cross-borehole tomography, limited coverage results in nonunique reconstructions. MIGRATOM follows the precedent of BOMTOM and BOMCRATR in allowing the user to constrain the inversion, in order to reduce the nonuniqueness problem. A new approach to application of constraints implemented in MIGRATOM is based on fuzzy logic techniques. Refraction of wave energy is modeled in MIGRATOM using an approach based on Huygens' Principle. Propagation of a continuous wavefront is modeled as a constructive interference phenomenon, which obviates the shadow-zone problem that affects conventional ray-tracing calculations. MIGRATOM has been tested with both synthetic and field data sets.
