"11.1. INTRODUCTIONA royalty is the most common form of interest retained by an owner who is disposing of his property or by a joint venturer who ceases, voluntarily or otherwise, to participate in the joint venture.1 Rarely does a non-participating party have a direct interest in the property and/or assets of a project, except during the period when a non-participating joint venturer may be having his interest diluted.2 In fact, it is most unwise to permit a non-participating party to have such an interest. It may give rise to significant problems that could prevent or substantially delay the development of an orebody and require a considerable amount of time, effort, and money to correct.3In negotiating a royalty, it is important to be aware that there is no law or convention that says, “You just don’t do that in a royalty agreement.” As with any agreement, inventiveness and flexibility on the part of the negotiator are not just assets, but virtual necessities. It is also for this reason that it is essential to read the royalty provisions, particularly the definitions, fully and carefully, especially if you are the recipient. On the other hand, if your inventiveness and flexibility cause your accountant to question the advisability of one of your ideas, pay close attention to him.4 He will, no doubt, have had experience with many royalties, and no competent professional adviser disparages a client’s ideas without good reason. Besides, he will probably be the person who will be determining the royalty or certifying the determination of it. At the very least, he will be auditing your general financial statements, which must, of course, reflect the royalty determination. Heeding his advice not only may make the determination easier but also will probably save you money in professional fees later on. Nevertheless, do not simply accept his comments or recommendations without understanding what they mean, why they have been made with respect to your royalty agreement (sometimes professionals have comments that they make as a matter of course and, even though they may be valid, you should require them to be justified to you), and how they will affect your royalty determination.It is surprising how many corporate payors insist that their standard royalty provisions5 be used as a matter of policy, thereby effectively tying the negotiator’s hands. It is even more surprising, and to professional advisers frightening, how many of the senior employees who insist that such a policy be adhered to, virtually without variation, do not know what is in the standard provisions and would be hard-pressed to explain them to a property owner. If standard provisions are appropriate, by all means use them, but do allow experienced and sensible negotiators some flexibility and make sure that everyone within the corporation who may have to use such provisions – negotiator and supervisor alike – knows what they contain and why they are as they are. For example, there are often good and convincing reasons to describe a deduction in a certain way or to include a certain specific type of deduction. On the other hand, quite often the answer to the question “why?” is that “it has always been there”; this is, or should be, an unacceptable answer. In any event, if you, as the negotiator, appear to know what you are talking about, are familiar and comfortable with your royalty provisions, and are backed up by your boss with the same words or reasoning, a property owner cannot help but be satisfied that you are knowledgeable, even if he still does not agree with your provisions. Finally, if you do use standard provisions, make sure that they are reviewed and updated regularly."

"Abstract- The Ontario Geological Survey completed a regional till sampling project between 1984 and 1988 in the Black River Matheson (BRiM) area of northeastern Ontario. The project was designed to aid mineral exploration in the area by documenting the Quatemary stratigraphy and by providing a database of till geochemistry. This paper summarizes the results from the sonic overburden drilling component of the BRiM project carried out in areas of thick drift (> 5 m). Results from till sampling in areas of thinner drift (<5 m) have been presented in a separate paper. Approximately 1100 till samples were collected from 225 sonic drill holes. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (> 3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically and visible gold grains were recovered by panning.Gold and other multielement geochemical data were plotted using proportional symbols to high­ light anomalous areas and to demonstrate how to evaluate and interpret a very large geochemical dataset. Thresholds for identifying anomalous concentrations of Au in till samples, defined using the 95th percentile, are 1500 ppb and 12 ppb for the heavy mineral and fine fractions, respectively. The heavy mineral fraction of older tills and to a lesser extent, Matheson Till, display a number of significant gold anomalies in the study area, which in a few cases, are associated with base metal anomalies. The vertical position of gold anomalies in Matheson and older tills varies from directly on bedrock to several meters above the bedrock surface and can provide information of relative ice transport distances."

This paper explores the interpretation and application of Particle Size Distribution (PSD) curves in optimizing blast design and enhancing downstream operations. The study looks at important factors like D50, D80, fines content, and the uniformity index to show how PSD curves affect the efficiency of different mining processes. The first section of this paper discusses the impact of blast design parameters such as burden, spacing, and explosive energy on the resulting PSD, highlighting their significance for downstream operations like crushing, and material handling. The section concluded that proper alignment of PSD with downstream size classes, like primary crusher inlet sizes, among others, can result in substantial cost reductions and productivity gains. The second part presents a case study from dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal, utilizing fragmentation analysis to evaluate blast performance and promote continuous improvement. The section specifically examines the effect of stemming material size on blast fragmentation, comparing the impact of using aggregate with a D80 of 12.32 mm versus a D80 of 21.94 mm. The D80 value represents the particle size at which 80% of the stemming material is smaller, making it a critical parameter in evaluating the stemming's effectiveness in confining explosive energy. The drilling and blasting designs were meticulously planned using O-PitDev and O-PitSurface software to ensure accuracy in blast parameters and layout. To assess the fragmentation resulting from these different stemming material sizes, the study utilized WipFrag 4 software. The software allowed for precise measurement of particle size distribution after the blast, as well as a detailed comparison between the two stemming sizes. Results from the analysis indicate that using bigger-sized stemming material led to improved blast confinement, which in turn resulted in better fragmentation compared to the smaller-sized material. The reviewed blast videos demonstrate that the larger aggregate effectively contained the explosive energy within the borehole, thereby reducing premature venting and directing more energy towards breaking the surrounding rock mass. This led to finer fragmentation with D80 = 1240.1 mm, D50 = 685.9, and Dmax = 2580 mm, which is advantageous in downstream operations like crushing and milling. On the other hand, the smaller stemming material (D80 = 21.94 mm) did not confine the explosive energy as efficiently, resulting in coarser fragmentation (D80 = 1327.37 mm, D50 = 750.76, and Dmax = 2370 mm) and reduced overall blast efficiency. These findings highlight the significant influence of stemming material size on blast performance and fragmentation outcomes.

The Daly-Judge Tunnel, begun in 1887 to drain mine workings, is now a source of potable water for the Municipality of Park City. The water is exceptionally clean; however, when roof falls occur, suspended solids levels become too high and water from the tunnel cannot be used in the treatment plant. In 2001, the tunnel was inspected and rehabilitated to ensure that the water supply for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games would be uninterrupted. Twenty-five timber tunnel sets were removed, and 86 steel sets were installed. Timber lagging was installed or replaced over about 230 m (750 ft) of tunnel length.

"This paper summarizes findings of a two-month investigation in Zambia and Zimbabwe and a one-month visit to Britain in1990-1991. United States contacts have supplied information about that country.Zambia&apos;s political unrest and severe devaluation, combined with developments in Namibia and South Africa, enhanced staff recruiting problems in the School of Mines. Zimbabwe has a strong and developing mining department. The departments of mining in the United States and Great Britain are readjusting and contracting due to the reduction in the scale of the industry.The above factors are reviewed and their impact on the countries evaluated.IntroductionCanada trains the majority of its mining engineers domestically but a significant number are recruited from other countries. Examination of the qualifications of 200 professional engineers registered in the mining discipline in British Columbia showed that125 received their first degree from a Canadian university, 33 graduated from institutions in the United States and 42 from the rest of the world including 30 from the United Kingdom. This is a rough and-ready sample but it indicates that developments in the education of mining engineers in the United States and in Britain are relevant to the Canadian mining industry.The recent changes in the world economy and political structure have significant implications for the mining industry and for the supply and training of engineers. Change in eastern Europe coupled with the downturn in mining, especially in the European coalfields, has enabled many engineers to travel freely to the West. The low gold price and the legislative changes in Africa that have improved access to education for Africans with the ability to fill responsible positions, have reduced the South African mining industry’s overseas recruitment to a minimal level. The Australian recession has also lowered their recruitment of mining engineers from other countries."

"Abstract - The Matheson area of northeastern Ontario is of great interest for mineral explo­ ration because of its geological similarities with the adjacent Timmins, Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake gold camps. Exploration in the area, however, is hampered by the presence of an extensive and thick cover of glacial sediments. For this reason, till geochemistry has be­ come an important exploration method. The Ontario Geological Survey&apos;s Black River -Matheson (BRiM) reconnaissance till sampling project, carried out between 1984 and 1988, was designed to aid exploration in the Matheson area by documenting the Quaternary stratigraphy and providing a database of till geochemistry. Till samples were collected by backhoe trenching of surface pits in areas of thin drift ( < 5 m) and by sonic overburden drilling in areas of thicker drift. This paper summarizes the results from the shallow till sampling component of the BRiM project.Two hundred and eighty-two surface samples were collected from Matheson Till, the youngest till sheet in the area, which was deposited during the Late Wisconsinan. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (>3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically. In addition, visible gold grains were recovered by panning the heavy mineral fraction. Five areas that display multi-element anomalies in both till fractions warrant further investigation: (1) western Egan Township, overlying the Bradley Lake Syenite; (2) around and south of the Munro and Croesus mines, in Munro and Guibord townships; (3) central Garrison Township overlying the Garrison Stock; (4) south of Ore Car Lake in northern Thackeray Township; and (5) southeastern Harker Township. In these areas, Matheson Till has a local provenance and the bedrock sources for these anomalies are nearby in the up-ice (north­ northwest) direction. Due to the fine-grained nature of gold in bedrock deposits in the BRiM area, the small size of most gold grains recovered from till samples (<50 1-1m) and the variable distribution of gold in the heavy mineral concentrate and fine fractions, the fine fraction in addition to the more commonly used heavy mineral concentrate should be used for gold exploration.Surface till samples have been affected by weathering to a depth of s3 m. Weathered till is characterized by a very low carbonate content in the matrix fraction, the absence of sulfide grains in the heavy mineral concentrate and higher concentrations of copper, nickel and zinc in the fine fraction than in the heavy mineral concentrate. As a result of the weathered/ oxidized nature of the surface till samples, the fine fraction is a better sampling medium for base metal exploration."

"The management of acid rock drainage( ARD) to prevent impact when tailings are disposed of in the environment requires understanding of the phenomena giving rise to acidic drainage, a rigorous evaluation of the weathering characteristics of the tailings, and the successful implementation of control measures that will be effective in the long term. This paper provides a brief theoretical background to the complex reactions taking place in mill tailings containing residual sulfide minerals which must be appreciated to enable waste characterization program to be effective in predicting the future behavior of the tailings and in designing control methods which will work. So far, most social performance monitoring systems have not gone beyond listing the impacts on various stakeholders. Executives have had to rely on intuition to devise interventions that would improve the impacts. This paper describes a survey process, known as the Stakeholder 360 (S360), which eliminates much of the guesswork. The paper reviews key studies showing that raising the levels of communication, trust, and common vision among stakeholders leads to the acquisition of the resources needed to improve the socio-economic situation. Therefore, the Stakeholder 360 measures the levels of these three factors in the relationships between a company and its stakeholders, and among the stakeholders themselves. In a validation study at a gold mine in rural Papua New Guinea, the S360 produced a socio-political ?roadmap? that showed management and stakeholders alike which relationships need more communication, trust, or common goals/vision. Management used the findings to create alliances that helped the government move forward on a regulatory regime for the mine closure. The community used the findings to focus its planning for life after the closure. An S360 survey conducted six months later revealed a decline in dependence on the mine and an overall increase in levels of mutual understanding.

"ForewordTHE Arctic Archipelago and northern Greenland contain an orogenic region that is as much as 300 miles wide and over 1,400 miles long. It occupies much of what was formerly classified with the Arctic Plains and grouped with other plains and lowlands of Canada as one main geological division. It is proposed that this folded region be designated the Innuitian Region and be recognized as one of the main geological divisions of Canada.Canada's main geological divisions (see Geological Survey of Canada, 1947) have been considered as consisting of a central shield, largely surrounded by plains that separate it from eastern and western mountains. The plains include the Interior Plains, the St. Lawrence Lowlands, the Arctic Plains or Low-lands, and the Hudson Bay Lowland, which is in the central part of the Shield. Plains and mountains are, strictly speaking, physiographic terms, but because mountains are generally folded regions and plains are generally made of undisturbed strata, such terms are useful vehicles to express the fundamental make-up of the land. Nevertheless, it is preferable to use the terms Appalachian and Cordilleran 'Regions' rather than 'Mountains', as those geological divisions are not exclusively made of mountains.Because of the lack of more definite information, the 'Arctic Plains' have included, in the past, regions with plateaux two to four thousand feet above the nearby sea, mountain ranges reaching approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, and regions of folded strata."

THE demand for high-quality aggregate is increasing in all phases of the construction industry and in all organizations associated with road building in Canada. The production of aggregate in Canada has increased almost continuously since the end of the war and has quadrupled since 1948. Increases during the past fifteen years can be accounted for by the expansion in all types of construction, particularly that of roads and highways. Total construction in 1959, based on preliminary estimates, has been valued at $7 billion, and an increase fore-cast for 1960 indicates optimism on the •construction horizon (1). Cement produced in Canada in 1959 amounted to 6.3 million tons. This is more than 2.5 times the 1948 production. Increased cement production indicates an increased use of concrete, and thus an increased need for aggregate. Natural sand and gravel deposits are gradually being depleted.

Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and Centro de Investigation Minera y Metalurgica (CIMM) commenced a five year project from 2001 to modify the treatment of the furnace dust from Teniente converter containing harmful elements like arsenic and lead. The project was supported by Japanese and Chilean governments, and a demonstration plant was installed and operated at Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery (Division Ventanas CODELCO). The basic and detailed engineering was made by Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co., Ltd (MMS) based on the joint study among JOGMEC, CIMM and Division Ventanas CODELCO. Arsenic in flue dust is lixiviated by sulfuric acid and fixed as crystalline ferric arsenate, where leachability of arsenic will be lower enough than the regulation, 5mg/I by TCLP (Toxicity Charactaristic Leaching Procedure) of USEPA. On the other hand, the recovered copper from the dust will be fed to the copper production process at Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery, while zinc will be recovered as the exportable product. As introducing the crystallization and growing stage, the stable crystalline ferric arsenate formation can be achieved under the normal pressure.

The liability created by building this railway is the great financial problem before the people of British Columbia at the present time. In dealing with the subject, I propose to divide it into three periods: The Past - The Present - and The Future. The Past The primary objects in building the railway were to provide an independent and direct route for the Grand Trunk Pacific railway into the city of Vancouver, and to open the central and north-eastern portion of the province.. This vast territory, almost one-half the entire area of British Columbia, has great wealth in fruit, agricultural, and grazing lands; timber, coal, water-power and minerals of all kinds, including some of the richest placer deposits in the world. Rivers and lakes teem with fish. Big game, including moose, elk, caribou, deer, grizzly and black bear, mountain goat and sheep, is plentiful and there is an abundance of small game and fur-bearing animals. In addition, its scenic attractions are unsurpassed in Canada. To develop these resources it was considered necessary to build a railway from south to north as a main artery of transportation and, if necessary, branch lines to carry heavy .shipments of coal or other commodities. Lighter freight may be handled by motor trucks from distant points to the railway.

This paper describes the problems encountered and the steps taken to solve them in milling an ore containing relatively large amounts of pyrrhotite. A complex and greatly lengthened flotation circuit was required to recover the pyrrhotite. A very low pH had to be maintained in the cyanide circuit in order to get good recovery of the gold and maintain reasonable cyanide recovery. Introduction D ELNITE Mines Ltd., a gold mine situated about 5 miles by road south and east of the town of Timmins, Ontario, is serviced by two shafts. No. 2 shaft extends from surface to the 2875-ft. level, and No. 3 shaft, an internal winze, extends from the 2875-to the 5275-ft. level. No. 2 shaft was stopped at the 2875-ft. level because of a heavy band of chloritic schist which necessitated a drive to the north for 1000 feet, where No. 3 shaft was sunk. Since milling began in 1988, the Laronde mill has been expanded several times, the most recent, increasing the milling rate from 5 000 to 7 000 mtpd. Laronde uses SAG/ball mill grinding followed by copper and zinc flotation circuits. A cyanidation/Merrill-Crowe process recovers the remaining gold and silver in the flotation tails in order to cope with high silver/gold ratio associated with the discovery of the Penna shaft. Since the commissioning of the Merrill-Crowe refinery in 2000, several modification and expansion projects were performed to reduce health and safety hazards. Remarkably, several of these improvements have contributed at increasing productivity and Net Smelter Return of the refinery while reducing worker&apos;s injuries. In 2004, the refinery was audited to evaluate and quantify the circuit performance. Metallurgical and mechanical operating conditions of the refinery are now understood and areas for further improvements are well defined. This paper describes some of the factors that have contributed to this improvement and describes how ergonomics and recovery can further be improved.

British Columbia, unlike the Prairie Provinces, cannot lay claim to vast prairies. She can, however, claim many valleys, uplands and plateaus that are capable of marked agricultural development. It has been said that British Columbia is not an agricultural province. This may or may not be true, but at the present time agricultural production in this province stands second only to that of forestry. The industry has advanced from a total production of 8 millions in 1908 to a total production of 60 millions in 1924, a total increase of approximately 650 per cent in 16 years. In the last 10 years production has increased from 30 millions to 60 millions. No other industry can point to such a rapid development. In 1908 British Columbia imported 12 million dollars worth of foods compared to the 8 millions which were produced at home. In 1924 she imported 20 million dollars worth of foods compared to the 60 millions worth produced at home. In addition we exported foods to the value of approximately 10 million dollars. British Columbia is therefore self-sufficing in-so-far as values ar.e concerned except for approximately 10 millions of dollars. It is not to be expected that this province will ever grow all the coarse grains that she may require: these, along with certain meats, will always be a heavy item in the imports. We are concerned at the present time more with the value of the products than with the quantities produced: in other words, with quantities only in-so-far as ? quantities improve value.

"The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals.The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. It is shown here that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. However, the theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are unlikely to experience growth in crystal particle size through heterogeneous nucleation and are more likely to grow through aggregation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome.
