The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

It is no longer satisfactory to assess the value of a coking coal on its intrinsic properties alone, its value depends upon its behaviour as a component in a blend. No single test can be used to make this assessment, it can only be made by carrying out a suite of tests. The quality parameters which are considered desirable, and which have widespread acceptance, have been discussed and their application to the blending of coals from New South Wales and New Zealand has been reported and discussed. Blending can be utilised to offset deficiencies, or capitalise on advantages, of the individual coals making up a blend. Gulf Coast domal salt mining operations have had sporadic encounters with methane gas emitted without any warning. In virtually all confirmed cases, the methane was localized in methane enriched zones. In a few cases large quantities of methane were expelled rapidly with salt outbursts, resulting in dangerous methane concentrations. Estimates of methane liberated by face blasts in methane-enriched areas is needed in determining how much air should be supplied to the face for proper dilution. A relationship between the gas content of salt samples collected from the face and the amount of methane liberated would be helpful in estimating how much methane will be produced by a face blast. Little is known about the layering or stratification of methane in large area-low velocity airways. This publication reports on three tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines which monitored the immediate return air of four faces during blasting. The test locations were in a methane gas-enriched section that had previously experienced two large outbursts and many smaller ones. A comparison was made between gas content values of face salt samples from the dissolution test and the gas liberation quantities. The characteristic movements of the methane in a large room with low air velocities were charted. This will help to better understand the factors involved in proper placement of methane sensors as a warning system.

The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

Iron ore sinter mineralogy and its associated macro-/micro – structure has a strong impact on sinter quality. At a macroscopic scale, sinter ideally consists of a strong, porous matrix which bonds relict ore nuclei together. Microscopically, the sinter matrix (solidified from the melt part of the initial sinter mix) generally consists of complex calcium ferrites known as SFCA, secondary magnetite and hematite grains (precipitated from the primary sinter melt), glass and silicates. Depending on the conditions under which the sinter structure is formed, two major forms of SFCA with different morphologies are generally recognised, ie fine micro-platy SFCA (usually termed SFCA-I) and coarse columnar/prismatic SFCA. Detailed optical microscope observations of several pot grate and compact sinter samples revealed the presence of a variety of fine, coarse and dense forms of both types of SFCA. The controlled cooling tests revealed that cooling rate has an impact on the form and size of SFCA crystals. In this work, EPMA analysis of SFCA compositions from a variety of pot grate and compact sinter samples are presented. Results show that the SFCA types exhibit a broad range of complex compositions within the system Fe2O3/CaO/SiO2/Al2O3/MgO/TiO2/MnO2. Although SFCA-I and SFCA are known to be crystallographically distinct and with different, well-defined ranges in composition, there was considerable overlap in compositions of the experimental sinter samples. The development of SFCA textures depend on several parameters including the local chemistry and conditions including the maximum temperature attained and the cooling rate, within the sinter bed, thereby suggesting that SFCA identification based on morphology alone may be erroneous.

Minimising dilution and ore loss is an important part of ensuring profitability of a gold mining operation. White Foil open pit gold deposit is a low-grade deposit and therefore managing ore quality is a high priority. Ground movement through blasting can displace ore and waste boundaries up to 10 m from their in situ location and therefore requires stringent ore movement monitoring and adjustment. There are currently only two options for monitoring blast movement – utilising visual targets (commonly lengths of polypipe) but this has widely been replaced by electronic blast movement monitors (or BMM). Regardless of the technology used, the basic principle is to compare the pre- and post-blast locations of the targets to determine the movement of the rock mass during blasting, which is then used to determine the final location of ore and waste boundaries.The Blast Movement Technologies (BMT) BMM system has been used at White Foil since June 2014. The system has been effective and reliable during that time; however, the annual cost of using the BMM system is greater than other monitoring alternatives. As such, the open pit geology team conducted a study comparing the BMM system against the conventional polypipe technique. The objective was to quantify the profit and loss that would occur based on the ore block transformations from both methods. Eight blasts were selected where polypipes were installed in additional holes adjacent to the BMM monitoring holes. The resulting movement vectors from the respective methods were used to create post-blast ore blocks by transforming the in situ ore blocks. While polypipe is a cheaper alternative, the BMM system tracks ore and waste boundaries more effectively resulting in better quality control, enhanced ability to minimise dilution and ore loss thus maximising profit. For these eight blasts, it is calculated that the BMM system resulted in A$664 978 extra profit through a reduction of ore loss. The total cost of a yearly BMM package was recovered in the first two blasts of this study. The primary reason for the difference is that polypipe had a poor recovery rate of 32 per cent compared with 92 per cent for BMM at White Foil. Therefore, the data used to transform the ore blocks was less representative, resulting in inaccurate post-blast ore block boundaries when using polypipe.CITATION:Watson, M E, 2017. There are a number of factors affecting the discovery and develop- ment of uranium in Australia which makes this mineral almost unique and quite different from other minerals. I. The role of the Australian Government, which initially encouraged the discovery by offering rewards to prospectors who discovered deposits that could become economic. 2. At a later stage, the Commonwealth and South Australian Govern- ments prevented the development and production of "new mines" by refusing to grant mining title and refusing to allow sales of uranium by not issuing export permits. 3. The unique property that uranium and its daughter products possessed, i.e. radioactivity, meant that any person who purchased a geiger coun- ter could go prospecting, even though they had no previous experience in prospecting and they had an equal opportunity of discovering a new deposit as a company or independent geologist. 4. Because the exploration/demand for uranium didn't occur until the 1940s very little background geological information or models were available and so the early discoveries tended to become the locus for exploration rather than moving into areas which might on geological concepts lead to exploration programmes based on geological models. Because of the lack of knowledge there was the exchange of geologists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Australia Geologist Survey.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia.As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary.The works are situated at Port Kembla (New SouthWales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. Thi.s will mean a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operations. The works as they exist are capable of turning out 1200 long tons of refined copper per month. It is gratifying here to note the unqualified success with whichthe E.S.A. refined copper met with on first being put on the market.

The Mesozoides of North-Eastern Asia represent a collage of exotic terranes which were accreted to the margins of the Siberian continent. In the Late Precambrian and Phanerozoic, the passive margin of the Siberian continent (the current north-east) broke up into a number of discrete fragments as a result of rifting events in the Riphean, Early and Middle Paleozoic. Rift related mineralisation includes stratiform and stratabound copper and base metal mineralisation in the structures of the Omulevka, Okhotsk and Prikolyma basement terranes, as well as along the edge of the Siberian continent in the Paleozoic sediments of the Verkhoyansk passive margin. During the Late Mesozoic the terranes were reassembled in a series of accretionary events. At the end of the Jurassic, the velocity of the Kula plate increased, and the opening of the Canadian Basin in the Arctic commenced, changing the vectors along which the Siberian and North American plates moved. Island arcs terranes were pushed back onto the Omolon super-terrane which was in turn pushed onto the Siberian Craton in a series of massive collisional events that resulted in the restructuring of the whole region. Numerous granitoids characterised by collisional and island arc chemistries with Au and accompanying Sn, and W mineralisation were emplaced. Mesothermal gold-quartz mineralisation was emplaced in a series of narrow belts that adjoin major crustal sutures and that spatially overlap belts of granitoids and zones of subgreenschist metamorphism. Each of these gold-quartz vein belts corresponds with a specific collisional phase. In the middle Cretaceous, the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt developed along the paleo-Pacific margin of the Siberian continent. Epithermal Au-Ag developed in the volcanics and shallow mesothermal Au-Ag-quartz and Au-Sb mineralisation developed in the Mesozoides. Porphyry and skarn style mineralisation developed in both the island arcs and in the continental Okhotsk-Chukotka Volcanic Belt.

This monograph presents a unified theory of adsorption and desorption of aurocyanide on activated carbon. This theory has proved useful for CIP/CIL carbon adsorption and Zadra and AARL elution process and equipment design; in accounting for the effects of various water qualities and process temperatures; and in the development of reagents to improve these processes. The theory presented is based on rigorous fundamentals : Classical Eyring theory links initial first order kinetics with Langmuir isotherm equilibria, and this isotherm is demonstrated for the first time to be a consequence of the activated complex postulate of Eyring theory. Simple extension to Freundlich conditions at high solution tenors is possible, but not presented. Supporting entropy data determined by the author includes practically all the pioneering CIP plants built in South Africa and Australia in the early 1980s.

Industries that handle and process ‘dusty’ ores are facing increasingly difficult challenges to ensure sustainable operation and development. Most existing dust-control measures treat only the symptoms of dust generation and do not deal with the root cause/s of the problem. Many of these methods are also relatively inefficient in terms of controlling dust emissions. This paper summarises the various existing options available for dust control and some of their features, advantages and disadvantages. It then describes some of the new technologies that are being researched, developed and employed to minimise dust emissions by addressing dustability or dustiness and the dust generation mechanisms found in industry. Recent research results and case studies are presented to demonstrate some interesting findings obtained from this work. In Australian coalmines there are a number of coal quality parameters that are measured by analysing samples from boreholes. The data points are used to generate spatial models of these parameters, typically using inverse distance as an interpolation method. Numerous additional boreholes are drilled which have geophysical logs measured downhole but from which no coal quality samples are taken. Full suites of coal quality analyses are expensive and time consuming to drill and sample. If geophysical proxies for coal quality could be used, this would greatly improve the accuracy of the resource estimation without additional cost.This paper examines two of the most important coal quality parameters – ash and volatile matter – and assesses the results of a number of geostatistical interpolation methods. The aim is to improve the accuracy of the interpolated models. Auxiliary variables from geophysical logs are also trialled to improve the estimation.A multivariate analysis of ash, volatile matter and several auxiliary variables of a selected coal seam was undertaken in a spatial context, using variography. This was used to construct a model of co-regionalisation that relates all of the variables as manifestations of an underlying geological theme.The traditional inverse distance interpolation approach was compared to ordinary kriging, universal kriging, co-kriging, regression kriging and kriging with external drift approaches. The relative merits of the six interpolation methods were compared by removing all points, one at a time and estimating at the thus known location. The mean error and the root mean square error were evaluated as a measure of bias and precision.This paper demonstrates that there is significant opportunity to improve the estimations of coal quality when using kriging with external drift. For example, the results show that when using the depth of a sample as an external drift variable there is a significant improvement in the accuracy of estimation for volatile matter. Furthermore, when using borehole wireline density logs as an auxiliary variable for ash content, there is improvement in the estimation of the in situ ash. The underpinning reasons for this are discussed in the context of the underlying geology and the physical properties of the coal. Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

"Current methods for acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation revolve around insulation of the waste from oxygen in the atmosphere with water and dry (soils and liners) covers. Both are of limited effectiveness and present significant drawbacks. Furthermore, while they reduce oxygen influx, they reduce but do not prevent ARD.The inert gas mixture (IGM) technology has been designed to overcome the deficiencies of gas transfer into tailings and waste rock materials across the surface and instead block oxidation by controlling the transfer of oxygen from the atmosphere. Inert gas is injected into the mine waste at low flow rates and the positive but low flow purges the oxygen that tends to diffuse into the sulfide waste across the surface. The positive flow of IGM compensates for inward oxygen diffusion and creates a pressure drop across the cover layer preventing inward diffusion of oxygen and, hence, acid generation.The IGM processes are evaluated in this paper: theoretically, with a review of the theory of ARD and the current state of knowledge about the performance of notably dry covers as atmospheric oxygen barriers via models to predict the performance of the IGM technique practically, with a bench-scaled experiment.The results demonstrate the effectiveness of IGM to prevent oxidation of sulfide minerals and ARD in waste rock. The laboratory experiments further identified key variables to be used to monitor performance and control efficiency of IGM, which is now awaiting field-scale application.The IGM technology is a patented process by Terraquest Technologies Ltd (Canada) in USA, Canada and Australia. The IGM technology can be cost-effectively manufactured on-site with commercially available compressors and gas filtration membranes. High-water rapid-solidifying material, called æhigh-water materialÆ, is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of backfill body, environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

Coal preparation is an integral part of producing coal for thermal powerplants and metallurgical processing plants. Coal processing plants use various unit processes to separate gangue and ash content from mineral coal, thus increasing the specific energy content.A flow sheet and a simulation model was established for a typical coal processing plant using Microsoft Excel. This model used the mass balance and split factors for run-of-mine (ROM) coal, tailings and water usage from a typical, generic coalmine.The common method of coal preparation initially involves several stages of crushing to reduce the size of coal. It is then sent to the processing plant for further washing. The typical method in Australia for coarse coal material processing is the use of dense medium cyclone (DMC) (Kininmonth and Baafi, 2009). Flotation cells are used for processing of fine coal. The fine products are utilised for coking coal only. In our case study, the intended coal product is for thermal powerplants. A novel approach to validate size distributions obtained from bubble sizing techniques is introduced. The experimental rationale consists in verifying whether the output features the anticipated bi-modality when two uni-modal populations (ca. 0.5 and 5 mm) are mixed in a bubble column. The degree of deviation is quantified by comparing the calculated and real proportions on a volumetric basis. A sampling-followed-by-imaging technique was used to proof the concept. The results showed the anticipated bi-modality in which the real and calculated proportions corresponded with a deviation of less than 15 per cent, considered good given the severity of the test. However, the deviation was correlated to the superficial gas velocity (Jg) in the column and was consistently against smaller bubbles. Possible sources of bias are suggested.

The nickel segregation process is one of the methods for treating nickel oxide ores. In this process nickel oxide ores are heated together with a small amount of the carbonaceous reductants and halides to about 800-950¦C. The reduced nickel segregates onto the surface of the carbonaceous reductants in the form of metallic particles which are recovered by magnetic separation or flotation. Pilot plant tests for the extraction of nickel from nickel oxide ores have been made using nickel segregation process by means of a new roasting installation which is called the "Mechanical Kiln" (2.5m~ x 3m,') with autogenous heating. Nickel oxide ores containing about 2.5%Ni were mixed with 2.5%CaC12 and 2.7%coal, and continuously charged into this installation at the rate of 60kg/h in continuous operation for 30 days per trial.

Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: 1. a minimum filling rate of 250 ma/h, 2. a curing time of 28 days, and 3. minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

The Courier 300 system basing on conven- tional X-ray technology is applied to complex or large processes. The newer Minexan 202 dis- tributed probe system based on radioisotope technology is developed mainly for simple or small scale applications.
