If enthusiasm is a requirement, the coordinator of the Total Concept program is a dynamic, exciting leader with a lot of potential to keep the program a vital and progressive effort for many years. Art Meyer is entering his third year as the leader of the Total Concept. He is using his years of experience in the industry to emphasize the basics required for the course, and has also instituted new programs. Meyer began his career, after graduation from CSM as geological engineer in 1950, with St. Joe Lead. He held other responsible positions with Amax and Rocky Mountain Energy. He can answer any questions that may crop up or find the right resource person for those questions. Additions to the 18-year-old curriculum instituted since Meyer became coordinator are the study of industrial minerals and strategic minerals. The industrial minerals portion of the course includes visits to a major sand and gravel operation, in addition to lectures on the subject. Much of the strategic minerals requires study and lectures, since Colorado is not a big production state in these commodities. How does the director arrive at new additions or deletions to the program? "It's very simple," he says. "We listen to questions posed by the students, recommendations by industry people who know what is important, and feed-back from course alumni." Alumni feedback from this course has been extremely gratifying, according to Meyer. Other ideas are constantly surfacing, ideas that will be implemented as time and resources permit. One of the most gratifying results of the Total Concept program from an alumnus was the development of a complete teacher and student package by John Christiansen, a teacher at Cherry Creek High School near Denver. The course so excited Christiansen that he envi¬sioned an energy and minerals course to fill a perceived gap in science education on the high school level. The draft package was so attractive that it was sponsored and the publication costs guaranteed by the Society of Mining Engineers. Today, under the leadership of the Mineral Information Institute, the package is in use in several states and has gained enthusiastic acceptance. Other alumni have launched their efforts to broaden the scope of the existing science education by instituting courses or special seminars. One recent alumnus, Dick Will, class of 1984, who was sponsored by the Denver Mining Club, is conducting a science seminar based on his experiences with the Total Concept program. Meyer will be speaking at this seminar, as well as other industry speakers from the SME GEM Committee Speaker's Bureau. Jane Dianich, another alumna, brought her students at Kent Country Day school, also near Denver, into the mainstream of resource education by taking them on abbreviated field trips similar to those she experienced while in the program. She also has been a vocal supporter of the organization and available to speak to other teachers on the value of the experience. George Wright, of the Lake School and a second sponsoree of the Denver Mining Club, admits he came into the program because the six credit hours given toward his continuing education requirement were attractive. He then stayed on to become an ardent advocate of the mining industry. In his own words, "I'm a convert." Wright has developed a slide presentation and has lectured to teachers and students as well as presenting his views to the Denver Mining Club. He has also indicated a willingness to participate with other organizations who need speakers. The value of these speakers and teachers is obvious, according to Meyer. "They represent a respected segment of the public and are not too `tainted' by association with an industry that is too often under criticism from various groups. They represent, in effect, a citizen's advocacy of the industry, which is an invaluable asset to us all." One of Meyer's concerns about the program is that the out-of-state student rate attendance is declining. He is hoping that more AIME sections around the country will become involved in the scholarship program of the Total Concept. Total cost is about $1200 per student. "The rewards to their sections could be tremendous, with the same kind of participation we get here with speakers, citizen advocates, and interested persons," he said. Teachers say that the course improves their teaching and knowledge in a number of subjects including biology, history, economics, career planning, environmental data, science, math, geography, physics, and chemistry. The recent interest in hazardous waste management has sharpened the desire to learn more about this. And Meyer foresees another segment of the course to emphasize this subject. "One of the most valuable resources we have is the field trip program. The course would probably be meaningless without this opportunity to get out into the field where these folks can see what actually happens. George Wright, for example, was amazed at the very small amount of area actually involved in the mining operation - something contrary to what he had heard in the past." The 45 students are taken by van on eight trips, one each week, and the long trip to Colorado's Western Slope. During this long adventure, the students visit underground mines, including CSM's Edgar, open-cut and underground coal mines, precious metals mines, and oil shale properties. They also have opportunities to meet with mine personnel at each of these stops. These field trips fill another function. Living together and exchanging ideas helps the teachers come up with new concepts for the classroom work - expanding their horizons. "As long as we have a mining industry, this effort will continue to grow," Meyer said, "and will fulfill a need within the public education and public relations area of the industry. We need the support. I have dozens of comments from teachers who attest to the value of this program. They understand. The mining industry must continue to do its part."

Contributions made by mining have played a much more significant role in the development of civilization than is generally conceded by historians or recognized by ordinary citizens. In modern society, mined products pervade all industry and the lives of all civilized people. Early man relied largely on stone and ceramics, and eventually metals, to fashion tools and weapons. Civilization was advanced by discoveries such as abundant supplies of high-quality flint in northern France and southern England and firesetting to break rock. Middle Eastern cultures flourished not only because of agriculture and trade, but also because of mineral-rich deposits nearby. The earliest miners date back perhaps to 300,000 BC; their quest was for nonmetallic minerals (chert, flint, obsidian) suitable for utensils and eventually for weapons. Other rocks and minerals (ceramics, clay, salt, meteoric iron) attracted the miners for jewelry, cosmetics, construction materials, food seasoning, and coinage. At first, their excavations were confined to the surface, either pits or placers. But by about 40,000 BC, mine workings had been extended underground as short adits or shafts, and by 8000 BC as elaborate interconnected openings 300 ft (90 m) in depth. Metallurgical separation of metals from their ores and their subsequent fabrication evolved gradually over the centuries, copper being the first liberated (c. 7000 BC) followed by lead, silver, gold, and iron. Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Flowsheets of typical U.S. cement plants are shown in Chapter 13. Chemical Composition and Physical Properties It is generally accepted that portland cement clinker consists of a mixture of compounds or synthetic minerals. The four principal compounds are:

INTRODUCTION The simplest way to drill a hole into rock is to strike a steel chisel or drill bit with a hammer. Early miners used this elementary hand technique so successfully in "single jacking" and "double jacking" that the first mechanical rock-drill designers sought to duplicate it. However, in the early developments, the designers were forced to retreat to a construction known as the "piston drill," wherein the entire drilling element is tied to the piston and reciprocates with it. It took nearly 50 years to devise a method of divorcing the two elements and to achieve the original hammer principle used in hand drilling. The Mont Cenis tunnel, drilled through the French Alps in 1861, usually is considered the birthplace of the mechanical rock drill. The Hoosac tunnel in Massa¬chusetts was drilled at about the same time, and the success of these two ventures paved the way for innova¬tions that produced the Burleigh, Ingersoll, Sergeant, and Waugh piston drills between 1870 and the turn of the century. In 1897, George Leyner of Colorado introduced what has been considered the most significant development in rock-drill history. He devised the hollow drill steel for water flushing; when combined with his free-piston hammer drill, this became the first lightweight and dust¬free underground machine. In addition, Leyner's drills introduced improvements such as automatic rifle-bar rotation of the drill steel and chuck, automatic lubrica¬tion, and an enclosed throttle control. During the 1920s and 1930s, automatic feeds, centralizers, sliding cones, and the automatic water back head were developed, laying the groundwork for all pneumatic underground drills currently in use. Since these pioneering efforts, rock-drill development has been concerned primarily with refining the designs and improving the metallurgy to make faster, lighter, and more dependable machines. Fig. 1 illustrates the progress in drilling speed during the first 125 years of rock-drill development; that progress is a credit to the persistence and inventiveness of the designers in the rock-drilling industry. ROCK-DRILL CLASSIFICATIONS To meet the variety of conditions encountered in rock drilling, several distinct types of drills have been de¬veloped. In general, rock drills may be classified as either hand-held or mounted, with the hand-held ma¬chines including the jackhammer or sinker, the jackdrill or jackleg, and the stoper. The mounted drills are com¬monly known as "drifters." Table 1 shows that each type of drill is available in several sizes from different manufacturers. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical rock drill, showing the principal components. The jackhammer or sinker, shown in Fig. 3, is used primarily for general mine utility work such as drilling anchor holes (short vertical holes to bolt or anchor machinery), pin holes (short, usually horizontal holes to fasten sheaves, etc. to side walls), popholes (for blasting large boulders), and similar applications. They also are used for shaft sinking. Jackhammers are classified ac¬cording to weight, and they range from 7 to 30 kg (15 to 65 lb). The rock drill originally known as a jackleg was made by clamping a pneumatic cylinder or leg to a jack¬hammer, both to support the weight of the machine and to feed the tool forward in horizontal or uphole work. The more modern jackdrill refined this concept to make the hinged pivot for the leg integral with the drill cylinder and to group all drill and leg controls in the drill back head for convenience. Fig. 4 illustrates a typical jackdrill. Jackdrills are classified according to cylinder bore size, ranging from 60 to 83 mm (2.375 to 3.25 in.). Because of their light weight and versatility, jack drills are very effective in small drifts, small tunnel head¬ings, and stoping. Sodium is a silver-colored metal that is so unstable that it reacts violently in the presence of water, and chlorine is a greenish-colored gas that is dangerous and lethal. Yet the combination of these two elements forms sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, which is a white-colored compound essential to life itself. Salt is perhaps the only mineral in the world that is used virtually by every human being in every country. Although its importance has diminished over time, salt has had a profound influence on history. Sources of salt have determined the location of cities, such as Salzburg, Austria, Salzgitter, Germany, Salt Lake City, UT, and Saltville, VA. Populations have migrated in search of salt, and wars have been fought to obtain or to protect it. Although there is no written record of when prehistoric man first discovered salt, he probably instantly appreciated its unique and distinctive taste and sought more of it. He noticed animals were attracted to salt springs and salt licks, where they satisfied their innate cravings. Man used this knowledge to hunt for food; where he found the salt, he would find the animals. Because prehistoric man was not aware of his physiologic need for salt, he automatically received his salt requirements from the meat of the animals he ate. A Mesopotamian tale tells of a wounded pig that ran into the ocean and drowned. After being recovered from the ocean, where it was saturated in the salt brine, the pork was found to taste better than unsalted meat. It was not until man graduated from a nomadic to an agricultural society when he introduced vegetables and cereals into his diet that he realized he needed additional supplements of salt. The Sumerians ate salted meat and used salt to preserve food about 3500 BC. In approximately 1000 BC, the Trojans learned to use salt for preserving fish. The maritime civilizations, such as that of the Phoenicians, engaged in an extensive salt trade throughout the Mediterranean. Many superstitions, customs, and traditions surround the religious, social, economic, and political aspects of civilization. Although some commodities have provided the basis of some ageless metaphors and cliches (i.e., heart of gold, strong as steel, etc.), none are more commonly used than those pertaining to salt. Being "the salt of the earth" referred to a person's worthiness, as referenced in Matthew 5:13 of the Bible. Someone "not worth his salt" reportedly was used in ancient Greece in bartering salt for slaves. When a laborer was worth his salt, he was paid a salary (sal is Latin for salt), a term still in use today that dates back to Roman times when part of a soldier's pay was salt rations. Fearing those around him, the Roman leader Pompey was known to add a grain of salt to his drinks as a supposed antidote to poison. Hence, "taking it with a grain of salt'' is to regard something with suspicion. The earliest known record of salt production was in China about 2000 BC when Emperor Yu decreed that salt had to be supplied to the court as a tribute. Because salt was a commodity that had universal demand, governments often intervened to control salt production and distribution to generate revenue for major national projects. State-run salt monopolies were common in history, such as in Rome about 506 BC. Revenue was also derived from taxes levied on salt sales. The word gabelle refers to the direct salt tax used in France. This tax was so despised that it was a major cause of the French Revolution. Although the tax was repealed in 1790, it was reinstated in 1805 to raise revenue for war. France continued to used the gabelle until 1945. Salt making was an important economic activity in many areas of the world. Archaeological evidence indicates that salt was quarried from hills near the Dead Sea before the Bronze Age. At Hallstatt in the eastern Alps of Austria, rock salt was mined as early as 1400 BC. Solar salt was being produced in the northern Yucatan peninsula by the Mayan civilization from about 50 BC to AD 300. Other than the prehistoric use of salt in the southwestern part of the United States by the Native Americans, the first production of salt by American colonists began in June 1614 on Smith's Island, VA, seven years after the founding of the Jamestown colony. The short-lived activity was in response to the high price of salt being charged by ship's captains who brought salt over as ballast from England. Although Nathaniel Loomis is credited with starting the first commercial inland salt production in the United States at Onondaga Lake in New York in 1790, salt had been made by individuals for private use years earlier. Indians had long known of the salt springs in the Kanawha Valley of Virginia (now known as West Virginia). In 1755, Mary Ingles, a white settler, was kidnapped by Indians and was forced to make salt from the saline springs. After her escape, she told other settlers how to make salt. At Saltville, VA, Arthur Campbell began making salt in 1782 by boiling brine obtained from salt springs. In 1799, William King sank a shaft about 3 m in diameter down about 61 m to the underlying Saltville salt deposits. The shaft flooded before he could extract any rock salt; however, King has the distinction of digging the shaft of the first salt mine in the United States. Fig. 1 shows the King site as it appears today in Saltville, VA. Production of brine from the shaft continued until 1892. Settlers moved into the Kanawha Valley in 1785, but it wasn't until 1806 that Elisha Brooks established the first commercial salt works in Kanawha.

Artificial intelligence, and especially expert systems, are currently receiving considerable attention. Of interest to the control engineer is the utilization of these tools for real-time process control applications. To evaluate this technology, a real-time expert control system was implemented in one of the grinding circuits at Brenda Mines Ltd. The performance of this micro computer based expert system compared satisfactorily to the proven supervisory control system currently in use. The study confirmed the expectations that expert systems have potential for real-time, supervisory control of mineral processing operations.

The Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was a major gold producer from 1863 to 1942, having yielded about 11,000 kg Au and 8,000 kg Ag. Gold occurs as coarse native metal and electrum in quartz veins and also finely disseminated within a quartz monzonite sill and its silicified wall rock. The sill is semi-conformable within a Proterozoic volcaniclastic-dominated sequence all dipping north about 35°. Early mining focused on the vein-hosted gold particularly in the immediate hanging wall and footwall of the sill. Later efforts included some open-pitting of the outcropping sill and adjacent altered and mineralized rock. Two sets of post-mineral faults have complicated the orebody geometry.

In recent years, junior mining companies, mostly listed in Canada, have taken a beating in the finance markets. Simply put, potential investors have been leery of sinking millions into exploration and mining projects due to volatile commodities prices and an uncertain regulatory climate in developed and developing countries. The 2014 edition of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), however, seemed to be a bit different for some juniors. Equity valuations have improved and metals prices appear to be stabilizing. So, for some of the stronger junior companies, there is some hope. Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity is picking up and, believe it or not, companies are raising some capital. Billed as the largest annual mining meeting in North America, the PDAC conference attracted more than 25,000 mining and exploration professionals from around the world. Organizers were anticipating attendance to break the 30,000 mark. But, given the state of the exploration end of the mining business, 25,000 is still a respectable number. Junior companies that are in the project feasibility stage, or have made promising discoveries that stand a good chance of proceeding to production, are being looked at by potential investors. Those are the survivors of the last three years of dismal M&A activity. On the other side are the juniors that are still around ? and there are plenty of juniors that were at the PDAC last year but have since disappeared ? but have little or no working capital. One analyst calculated that there are about 850 companies with less than $200,000 in working capital and about 600 with negative working capital. This will likely result in fewer junior mining and exploration companies as the year progresses but the ones that remain should be stronger.

"Ask an average non-industry person on the street “What is coal? What is coal mining? What is a coal miner?” The most common answers are coal is something Santa puts in your stocking for being naughty, coal mining is destroying the earth causing global warming, and a coal miner is a person that uses a pick and shovel to dig coal out of the earth. As farfetched as these answers seem, unfortunately this is the opinion of many Americans. Realizing the lack of educational opportunity regarding coal and coal mining, a first-of-its-kind grassroots coal education program known as CEDAR (Coal Education Development and Resource) was created. What started from a general conversation at the December 1992 North Carolina Coal Institute (NCCI) Winter Meeting at the Mid Pines Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina led to the creation, and later expansion of, CEDAR. NCCI President, Gene McBurney, challenged John Justice, NCCI Board Member from east Kentucky, to come up with an idea of how to improve the image of the coal industry, pledging $5,000 from the NCCI as seed money to assist in the development of any such program. John then met with the leaders of Coal Operators and Associates, Inc., (COA) in Pikeville, KY where they agreed to match the NCCI commitment, as well as to assist in the program’s development. After further meetings with representatives from industry, business, and the local school system, CEDAR, Inc. (of east KY) was born. The first year of implementation, the program offered coal education programs to public and private schools in one county in east Kentucky. Although it started in the coalfields of eastern Kentucky, it certainly did not end there. After an amazingly successful first year of the program, it didn’t take long for industry leaders in the western Kentucky coal-fields to learn about, and take note of this new, unique, and exciting program that provided opportunities for teachers and students to learn, “the rest of the story” about the coal industry. Through the joint efforts of Costain Coal, and the Western Kentucky Coal Association, CEDAR of West Kentucky, Inc. was formed in 1994, and has operated since that time, except for the two year period from 2004-2006. The program restarted in 2006 under the name of CEDAR West, Inc. and continues to be offered in six western Kentucky counties."

Common clay is a natural, fine-grained material composed of hydrous aluminum silicates. Shale is a laminated sedimentary rock formed by the consolidation of clay, mud and (or) silt. Government and legislative programs The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invited industry to nominate representatives to a review panel that will help the EPA develop rules to regulate air toxics from the production of brick and structural clay products. The EPA was required to establish a review panel because these regulations will significantly affect small businesses. The regulation of air toxics falls under the Clean Air Act.

"Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference. In the world of mining, erosion can lead to small cracks, which can then lead to bigger problems that, over time, can eventually lead to a catastrophic event. However, when managed correctly, as in the case of the Manefey Slide at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, the damage can be minimized.Numerous industry conferences, technical papers, studies and resources are dedicated to these issues each year, but what is sometimes overlooked is how the erosion of personal ethics can also have life-changing effects.At the 2019 SME Minnesota Conference, April 15-17 in Duluth, MN, two inmates serving their respective prison sentences at the U.S. Federal Prison Camp in Duluth spoke to the conference about how small cracks in their ethical foundations grew over time, eventually leading each man to his new address at the minimum-security facility.The men’s full names were not released and they were introduced as Jeff and Tony. Other than the matching green uniforms, both middle-aged men could have fit in with the rest of the crowd. They are well-educated and articulate whose career paths eroded thanks to greed and careless decisions.Tony, a licensed professional engineer, enjoyed a successful career working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeff is a former senior vice president of investments who ran a well-respected investment management team. Both spoke openly about the mistakes they made and emphasized that their crimes were not flagrant violations of the black and white rules but grew from ethical violations that live in the gray area between black and white, and right and wrong.Working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Tony said he was befriended by a wealthy man who was generous with his money. As Tony told it, a few meals with this man led to a few trips to casinos and eventually to gifts of money. The donor did not ask for anything in return, and at the time, Tony said he did not think that he was doing anything wrong. He admits now that the perception of a high-ranking officer in the DOD accepting gifts is not a good one, as it could be construed as the donor might have been trying to gain favor for future contracts; which is how it was presented in court by the prosecution team."

Encompassing between 20 and 40 percent of the typical mining operational costs, energy in mining operations is a growing concern for the industry. However, this concern is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. Managing energy efficiency is becoming a keystone of successful companies. The suggested energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations must follow a well-structured approach to include the following: ? Understanding where energy is being used and why. ? DOUG HALBE: I've decided that we're going to change tactics here and we're going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I've also decided who's not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we'd get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We've asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you'll find what they're going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I'm going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don't know something, and he's always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Remember that we're being nice to people here, Joe. I know that's a stretch. [laughter] TERRY McNULTY: Thank you, Doug. I'm a little bit mystified by this sudden switch of tactics just before I get to the podium. Doug's been a good friend for a lot of years so I guess I do have to be nice. I won't say anything deprecatory about him, but I would have to comment that the observations made by earlier speakers have been far too generous. [laughter] During nine years of consulting as a mineral processor and extractive metallurgist, I have often conducted audits of the performance of client's plants. Usually these audits have been ordered by the plant management in hopes of identifying opportunities for improving processing efficiency or reducing costs. "More than 6,300 people converged on the Colorado Convention Center for the 2017 SME Annual Conference and Expo and 119th National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO on Feb. 19-22. Many of them crammed in to hear Douglas Silver deliver the keynote address to the conference.Silver is a portfolio manager for Orion Mine Finance, a private-equity fund focused on providing funding to advanced-stage base and precious metal projects and is one of the most respected voices in the field of mineral economics. Prior to joining Orion, he served as chief executive officer and chairman of International Royalty Corp., a global mineral royalty company, which he founded in 2003 and sold in 2011.Those who were hoping that Silver would deliver at least a bit of optimism during his 90-minute presentation got what they came for from the talk titled, “When are commodity prices going to rebound?”It marked the second time Silver has presented the keynote address to SME, the first was in 2008 and was delivered during the height of mining’s super cycle (ME, June 2008). In his 2017 address, Silver looked back on the previous 10 years and the massive contraction of the global economy that resulted from the great recession that began near the end of 2008.It has been a challenging time for the mining industry. About US$1.4 trillion was lost in the global mining stocks from 2011 to Jan. 6, 2016. Major mining companies exceeded $60 billion in write downs between 2012 and 2013 and investors lost confidence in the sector, putting the global mining industry into a bear market that has taken mining equities to historic lows.However, that was then and this is now.Using numerous examples, including rising commodity prices, a steady decline in the U.S. unemployment rate, increases in discretionary income and the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which topped the 20,000 mark for the first time ever in February, Silver theorized the current down cycle is near its end and the demand for metals and other commodities will see a sharp increase by 2025. He also noted that investors are beginning to rotate back into mining equities."

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. The nation is confronted with thousands of acres of abandoned coal lands. In Pennsylvania alone, these lands have been estimated to cost $15 billion to reclaim (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985). One way to deal with this problem is to provide a mechanism by which the active mining industry can undertake to remine certain of these abandoned mine areas. Remining is classified as reaffecting previously mined areas in order td extract the remaining coal reserves while improving the environmental quality of these lands through land restogation and abatement of pollutional discharges. However, there currently is a disincentive for operators to plan to extract reserves on these abandoned mine lands which have preexisting pollutional discharges. Therefore, they presently avoid them. This is because of the "potentially unlimited liability of post- mining treatment for any discharges that would remain after mining? (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985).

In July 1968, P.T. Inco Indonesia was granted a Contract of Work to explore and develop the nickel laterite resources on the southeastern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi. Since 1970, exploration has centred on the deposits at Soroako as the site for initial project development. This paper describes the exploration methods used to evaluate these rather unique laterite deposits, the geology of which is described in the first section of this volume.
