Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern Québec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed ultrafine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultrafine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulphides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 microns and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3% S, 0.07% Cu and traces of antimony (0.03%). The mineralogical characterization showed the presence of 65% gangue minerals, 23% pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6% arsenopyrite, 2.2% pyrite and 0.08% chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05%) and sphalerite (0.03%). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3-5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20 C 72 hours extracted 97.0% Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7% Au extraction. A 16-h pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-h cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5%. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0%. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2%. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80%. Efficient cyanidation of an ultrafine sulphide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultrafine sulphide concentrates.

"INTRODUCTION The behavior of particles in a sound field has long been of scientific interest since Kundt (1) 5/ made his classic experiments on some of the interesting effects of standing waves in cylindrical tubes. With the development of the electronic tube and its application to continuous generation of sound, experimental investigation of the Kundt tube was renewed (2). The more intense vibrations set up by a continuously vibrating diaphragm or rod produce even more striking effects than those observed by Kundt. Instead of the striations at the antinode produced by the stroked rod, then, wafer like barriers are formed at the antinodes, sometimes extending over the entire cross-section of the tube. Furthermore, it was observed independently by Andrade (3), Brandt, Freund and Hiedemann (4); and by investigators in the Bureau of Mines laboratories (5) that aerosols, such as ammonium chloride or tobacco smoke, could be flocculated quickly if passed through an intense sound field, particularly when a standing wave field was set up by a resonant enclosure. Because of its possibilities as a new means for removing suspended particles from dust-laden gaseous furance or smoke, the phenomena attending the behavior of suspended particles in a und field have been studied intermittently by the Bureau of Mines over the past decade.The first experimental work was done with a magnetostriction vibrator and a Hartmann air-jet generator as sound sources. It soon became evident that neither type was entirely satisfactory. Low mechanical efficiency is an inherent characteristic of magnetostriction generators, and the air-jet generator is difficult to control and does not permit accurate measurement of the acoustic output. The search for a suitable sound source led to the development of an electromagnetic generator, which is by far the most suitable for study of the effects of intensive high-frequency sound fields in gases (6)."

The application of conventional rock mechanics methods to complex ground is very difficult. Yet. In most underground mining, the ground is complex. Therefore. conventional methods are not only difficult to apply but are also generally ineffective in improving underground operations. Similarly, conventional rock mechanics instrumentation has not significantly contributed to improvement of mining practice. Rock mechanics instrumentation in underground mining operations is often considered to be" merely an expensive nuisance. A new system of mine instrumentation is changing this traditional view. The new instrumentation method, called the SPDR method, was originally devised by Dr. Shosei Serata to meet the specific requirement of establishing the Stress Control Method of mining upon a solid quantitative foundation. This instrumentation method has contributed substantially to the widespread success of Stress Control mining under widely varying ground conditions in different types of underground mines (1.2.3.4). The instrumentation method provides an effective means for optimizing Stress Control mining patterns, simultaneously achieving reduction in production costs and substantial improvements in safety (5). The principles and methods of the new instrumentation method are described below, with field examples.

"Tungsten skarn deposits on the Clea property in the Selwyn Mountains, Y. T., are related genetically to a quartz monzonite stock, about 500 metres in diameter at the surface. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are metamorphosed for a distance of 3 km from the stock. Tungsten-bearing skarn mineralization within the altered sedimentary rocks is of two types: sulphide-rich pods and calc-silicate beds. The most significant scheelite concentration is in calc-silicate beds near or adjacent to the quartz monzonite stock. Discordant K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic dates indicate that the stock is probably of early Late Cretaceous age, 94 Ma or slightly older, and that it cooled slowly. High initial 87Srl86Sr ratios and disequilibrium relationships between K-jeldspar phenocrysts and groundmass minerals in the porphyritic phase of the granitic rock , and between different granitic rock specimens, indicate contamination of crystallizing magma by old sialic continental crust which extends westward under the Selwyn Basin.This study is significant to regional tungsten exploration. Granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits, in this part of the Canadian Cordillera at least, appear to have specific isotope characteristics that indicate they were generated at a specific time and in a particular way.IntroductionThe Clea tungsten skarn property (Fig. I) is owned by Canex Placer Limited, and lies in the Selwyn Mountains (Bostock, 1948) near the eastern margin of the Selwyn Basin (Wheeler and Gabrielse, 1972), Yukon Territory. The property covers a 20-square-mile area centered near latitude 62°47 ' north and longitude 129°52' west, and is accessible by helicopter. An airstrip and the terminus of a summer-use gravel road at MacMillan Pass, Yukon, are about 20 miles to the northnorthwest.This paper deals mainly with the geochronemetry of granitic rocks from a stock associated with tungsten mineralization on the Clea property. We show that these rocks have specific characteristics that not only define the genesis of this stock, but also have significance for regional tungsten exploration around plutons in the Canadian Cordillera."

Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures to the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study which determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system which was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, being a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels comparing outside to inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system?s efficiency. Testing using particle count instruments performed during non-production time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated Protection Factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

This paper intends to introduce the development of copper smelting and converting technologies in China in recent years, with a particular emphasis on the introduction of various continuous converting technologies, and moreover, it analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of those technologies, including their impact on the downstream anode refining from different points of view. INTRODUCTION At present, many converting technologies are used in copper pyro-metallurgical plants in China, including Peirce-Smith (PS) converter, flash converting furnace, multi-lance based top blowing, bottom blowing and so on. These technologies have spanned a wide range of time. PS converter technology has been applied in copper smelters for many years and most of the blister copper have been produced by this technology; flash converting technology has been developed since 1990s and been maturely applied in several plants up until now; top blowing and bottom blowing technologies have been revived in China in the past decade and boast good environmental protection performance, energy efficiency, throughput capacity and short process flow. All of the said technologies have reference operations in treating high-grade matte. As more and more attention is paid to environmental protection globally and copper smelters continuously seek for cost reduction, it is necessary to share those converting technologies, especially those new converting technologies derived in China, with copper smelting practitioners in the world. This paper aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various technologies from a macroscopic view and discuss their actual application effects, current developments and future improvements. BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF VARIOUS CONVERTING TECHNOLOGIES IN CHINA China has seen a rapid development in copper smelting industry in the past 30 years and has become the largest gathering place of copper smelters in the world, most of which are operating with PS converting furnace technology, however, with the increasingly strict environmental requirements of the Chinese government in recent years, the low-level pollution issue and the disadvantage of large gas exhaust amount per unit of copper of converting furnaces are particularly prominent.

The North American mining industry faces challenging emissions regulations in coming years with the introduction of new standards for off-road diesel engines. In order to remain competitive, industry stakeholders must invest in new technologies that are economically and environmentally sustainable. Westport Innovations Inc., of Vancouver B.C. has developed high pressure direct injection (HPDI) technology that allows diesel engines to run primarily on natural gas with no intrusive engine modifications, reduced emissions of NOx, PM, and CO2, with no loss in performance. This is accomplished through late-cycle high-pressure injection of natural gas directly into a diesel engine combustion chamber. The natural gas is injected at the end of the compression stroke. A small amount of diesel fuel is injected first to initiate combustion, followed by the main natural gas fuel injection. The diesel cycle and its operating characteristics are fully retained including high combustion efficiency, low speed torque, high-power output, no engine knock and fast response to load changes. Natural gas has not been an attractive fuel alternative in mining operations due to reduced performance associated with spark ignition engines and the added weight and space required for compressed natural gas tanks. However, liquefied natural gas (LNG) can be stored in a similar manner and volume to diesel fuel by virtue of its increased energy density over compressed natural gas. Cummins, Inc. of Columbus, Indiana and Westport have formed a joint venture, Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI), under which agreement the HPDI technology is being applied to a Cummins QSK engine series for high horsepower applications such as mine haul trucking. CWI, along with Komatsu Mining Systems, ENRG Fuels, Placer Dome, and Cortez Joint Venture are performing a feasibility study for the development and demonstration of an LNGfueled HPDI QSK engine in a large mine haul truck. The goal would be to demonstrate low emissions consistent with EPA ?Blue Sky? standards, high efficiency based on HPDI technology and good economics resulting from the high fuel consumption of 2,000+ hp trucks.

Introduction The impact of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and their state counterparts underscore the intention of the nation's lawmakers to reduce the risk from hazardous substance to American society. The promises and requirements embodied in these laws, together with their prospects for liability, will continue to have a very substantial impact on decision making in the mining industry. These laws present the prospects for staggering liabilities, often of an unquantifiable nature in terms of time and amount. It is therefore necessary to keep them in clear focus. This is particularly true in light of President Reagan's signing into law the Superfund amendments on Oct. 17, 1986, and in light of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) major policy pronouncement of July 3, 1986, regarding solid wastes from extraction of ores and minerals. This article examines the general trends as well as the specific provisions of these laws in an effort to assess the prospects of liability for the mining industry of releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Hazardous substances vs. hazardous wastes The distinction between the terms "hazardous substances" and "hazardous wastes" is important to appreciate for the purposes of assessing the potential for liability for a mining operation. Hazardous substance is a term that appears in and is defined in the Superfund Act. In Superfund, it is defined by reference to other substances that have been declared to be hazardous under other federal environmental statutes, such as RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. Hazardous waste is a term that is less all-encompassing than hazardous substance, as that term is defined by RCRA. Hazardous substances do not need to be wastes to be considered hazardous for the purpose of Superfund liability. A "release" of a hazardous substance into the environment can bring about potential liability under Superfund. Many mining wastes, even though they are not considered hazardous wastes by EPA under RCRA, have been determined by that agency to be capable of bringing about liability under Superfund if they contain chemical substances, such as the heavy metals copper, lead, mercury, zinc, silver, and others. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the mining industry to be able to answer whether one has hazardous waste at a mining site. That question only goes partway in addressing the potential for liability. The next question is, do one's solid or liquid mining wastes contain hazardous substances that could bring about liability under Superfund? Superfund 1980 law: A review Some provisions of Superfund as it existed before its recent amendments must be considered. The law provides that the owners and operators of mining sites, together with those who transport hazardous substances to such sites, can be held jointly and severally liable for the cost of cleaning up the site. The concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of cleanup. The three major objectives of this contract were (1) to survey underground diesel-powered mining machinery to determine noise exposure problems, (2) to recommend noise control techniques, and (3) to develop a technique for predicting underground sound levels from surface sound power measurements. The objectives were achieved. The contractor developed information on the severity of the noise problem caused by diesel engines underground and pinpointed the equipment causing the problems. He recommended a number of corrective techniques that can provide relief until long-term solutions are found. A procedure for predicting underground noise levels from above-ground measurements of the machine noise was found valid for several cases tested.

Coal is still a part of energy generation worldwide and has a significant role in the sustainable development of countries. The amount of shallow coal deposits is getting scarce, making efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economies. In underground mining operations, longwall mining is a commonly utilized method to extract deep coal deposits. One of the leading engineering goals in longwall mining is increasing the efficiency of the system by investigating the effects of operational factors on equipment. This paper investigates the shearer performance for a longwall top coal caving operation by discrete event simulation that includes modeling the double-drum shearer, belt conveyors, stage loader, and armored face conveyors (AFC) to evaluate system performance by considering the amount of daily coal production of the shearer. As a result, the most influential factor on mine production is determined and a data-based framework is developed. This study suggests a framework for data collection, data analysis, and the interpretation of the operational data to evaluate the primary production unit’s performance. The models developed for the face coal extraction operations in a longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mine have a bi-directional cutting system and can be implemented in other operations readily.

Introduction Abandoned mill tailings deposits can be found throughout the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, indicative of mining activities that originated during the great gold rush days of 1875. The Refuse Act of 1899 attempted to regulate the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. But, in most cases, huge volumes of mine and milling wastes were disposed of in ways no longer considered environmentally acceptable. Restoration of gold mill tailings deposits is a relatively new practice to the Black Hills area. This discussion will present an overview of the environmental setting, environmental problems associated with past tailings disposal practices, practices being implemented to solve these problems, and prospects related to present the future tailings disposal practices. Environmental Setting An understanding of climatic characteristics, geology, surface and ground water hydrology conditions, and the physical and chemical characteristics of selected mill tailings deposits will aid in understanding environmental problems associated with tailings disposal and restoration. "AbstractThe PRESS-IN METHOD is widely recognised as “an environmentally friendly piling method”. However, this characteristic is only one of the fundamental advantages of the method and this paper presents the most up-to-date capabilities of the method. Due to the evolution in recent years, the Press-in Method is now applicable to 2.5m thick retaining walls, over 50m deep foundations, overcoming rock conditions and confined construction conditions.The Press-in PrinciplesThe basis of the Press-in Method is simple. The Silent Piler presses a pre-formed displacement pile into the ground by static jacking force. The reaction for the Press-in Force is generated by gripping previously installed piles. As a pile is pressed into the ground, “A Pressure Bulb” is formed around the pile toe. Accordingly, higher bearing capacity can be generated compared to driven piles without disturbing the ground and producing any vibration. A potentiometric model study has been made of the effect of vertical fractures existing in the matrix of the reservoir on the flooding or cycling performance. Fractures can have unusual flow characteristics. Fluid entering one side of a fracture can emerge on either the same or opposite side of the fracture, depending on the particular streamline. Fracture orientation has a great influence on the sweep efficiency. However, sustained fluid injection may still permit large areas to be swept. INTRODUCTION One can find considerable information available in the literature on the effect of fractures originating at the wellbore on sweep efficiencies of water-flooding or gas cycling programs.1-5 However, there arc few, if any, quantitative data reported in the literature on the effect of vertical or horizontal fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on secondary recovery performance. Several papers have been presented on the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on the productivity or conductivity of waterflood and gas injection patterns, but in all cases the fractures initiated at the well and simulated commercial fractures.6,7 It is believed that natural fractures may exist out in the reservoir matrix and would effect the displacement performance. The purpose of this report was to study the effect of a few isolated vertical fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on the performance of waterflood or gas injection patterns. DESCRIPTION AND EQUIPMENT Since the potentiometric model was described by Lee8 it has been widely used to study numerous types of fluid displacement problems. The potentio- metric model can be used for fluid displacement studies when the following assumptions are valid: (a) steady-state conditions exist; (b) the mobilicy ratio is one; and (c) the capillary and gravitational effects can be neglected. Five-spot and direct line drive square patterns were studied using a copper strip of the desired length and orientation to simulate a vertical fracture in the reservoir matrix. The 20 x 20-in. model was considered to represent only one element of an infinite array of similar patterns. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS FIVE-SPOT PATTERN — ONE FRACTURE BETWEEN INJECTION AND PRODUCING WELLS Fig. 1 shows a quadrant of a five-spot pattem with the vertical fracture existing out in the matrix along a line connecting the injection and producing wells. Length of the fracture was equal to 35.4 per cent of the distance between injection and producing wells. In this particular pattern it is noted that fluid breaks through from the injection well to the producing well when the dimensionless time is equivalent to 26.9. The distribution of sulfur in iron was found to be dependent upon the time and temperature of the treatment as well as the chemical composition of the sulfide. With higher temperatures, the sulfide phase spreads more extensively between the iron grains. A complete network, however, does not form until approximately 1300°C (2372°F), ot which temperature the dihedral angle approaches zero. Silicon has little effect on this change. Aluminum, oxygen, and manganese all modify the temperature of sulfide network formation to a higher value. The microstructures which result and have significance in relation to hot-shortness are discussed. SULFIDE inclusions in steel were recognized by metallurgists before the turn of the century. Considerable attention has been paid to them, and numerous studies have been made on the working properties of steel as affected by them. It has been suggested that ho t-shortness of steel is due to the presence of an enveloping liquid sulfide film at the grain boundaries of the steel in the range of the hot-working temperatures. However, several facts have been observed in commercial steels which do not seem to be completely consistent with this explanation: 1) the frequent absence of continuous films of sulfide as observed under the microscope, 2) the absence of hot-shortness in some high sulfur and resulfurized steels, and 3) the limitation of hot-shortness to a definite temperature range. The role that manganese plays in steel to eliminate hot-shortness is well known, but the theory behind it is still under question. Moreover, the effect of de-oxidizers such as aluminum and silicon, and the effect of oxygen are still not clearly known. In this study, the effect of heat treatments and of additions of manganese, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen upon the distribution of sulfide inclusions in iron was investigated. Both the as-cast and the heat treated structures were studied, using microscopic and autoradiographic techniques. Part of the results were interpreted in terms of Smith's' concept of microstructure. Review of Literature Metallurgists used to consider sulfide inclusions as suspended particles. It was Wohrman' who first pointed out that sulfide inclusions are soluble in liquid iron. Many observed facts may be understood on the basis of this concept of solubility. Wohrman found that small castings contain small inclusions. and larger castings contain larger ones. Also, inclusion sizes are smaller near the chilled surface. For the same size ingot, the average inclusion size in a given heat of steel depends upon the rate of solidification. "INTRODUCTION Previous investigations of the Boulder City station of the Bureau of Mines have demonstrated that low-grade domestic chromite concentrates can be roasted with carbon to obtain selective reduction of the contained iron, and that the reduced iron can be removed by acid leaching of the roasted products to produce residues with higher chromium iron ratios. Thus, some chromite ores or concentrates that originally contain too much iron to be acceptable for the production of ferrochrome can, by this treatment, be rendered marketable as ""high-grade"" chromite. 3/The present report supplements the earlier work of the Bureau and re¬cords the results of small-scale laboratory tests investigating the effects of:1. Temperature and time of the reducing roast.2. Chromite and carbon particle size.3. Ratio of carbon to chromite in the initial roast mixture.4. Variations in the alumina and silica content of the ore.5. Back-oxidation of the roast product.6. Temperature and time of leaching .of roast product.This work differs from that done previously in that particular emphasis was placed on roast mixtures containing just enough carbon for the reduction of the iron in the chromite, whereas some two and one-half times this amount of carbon was used in the earlier work.In addition to these tests, the mechanism of the production reactions was examined for the purpose of explaining the precance of acid-soluble chromium, which occurs under certain conditions of chromite reduction."

This bulletin, which discusses open-cut mining at the metal mines of the United States, is the last of a series of such papers by the Bureau of Mines describing the principal methods of mining.4 Open-cut mining is applicable to flat-lying mineral deposits relatively near the surface. Vein deposits seldom are amenable to this method, although outcrops of veins sometimes are worked as open pits. Most of the iron ore of the country is mined from open pits; according to the Minerals Yearbook, 67.4 percent was mined from open pits and 32.6 percent from underground mines in 1937. Open-cut mining is relatively new in the copper industry but yields more copper than any other method; in 1937 about 52 percent of the copper ore mined in the United States was taken from open pits. Lead-zinc ore has been produced from open pits in the Joplin (Mo.) district, but most of the deposits in this area, although flat-lying, are too deep to be mined economically by the open-cut method. In 1937 one company at Oronogo, Mo., was stripping overburden and mining mixed oxidized and sulfide ores by this method.

Mine to Mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian Mining Industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in NorthernQueensland, Australia, has espoused the Mine-to-Mill concept and isactively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROMstockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken betweenErnest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives tooptimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance ofindividual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimisefragmentation or the downstream processes. These include suchspecialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, andPOWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As importantare the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers,measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and ahigh-speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design - only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as theunderstanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting inreduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control.
