Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 3.2-Mt (3.5-mil-lion st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sec-tor. The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days. Unlike molecular high explosives, commercial explosives based on ammonium nitrate do not detonate ideally according to the theoretical model for steady state, one-dimensional detonation. One of the reasons for this deviation from ideal detonation is the slower chemical reaction, due to less intimate contact between the oxidiser and fuel components. It is well known that the inclusion of gas pockets, such as microballoons, in the formulation of ammonium nitrate based emulsions and watergels enhances the performance of these explosives. Various different interpretations of the “hot spot” theory have been proposed to explain this phenomenon.

An innovative cost-saving design for a 1,100 ft bulkhead on the Tanana River at Nenana in central Alaska won Alaska Construction & Oil magazine's Construction Achievement Award. The designers utilized materials available nearby at low cost. They planned sheet pile enclosures, self-anchored back into shore without cell closures. They made it practical for inexperienced local workers to do the building. And they completed the project on time and below a reduced budget.

In recent years, tellurium has been extensively used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials. For this type of application, high-purity tellurium is required. Selenium, lead and silicon are usually the main impurities in tellurium. During the electrolytic refining of copper, tellurium gold and silver are collected in the anode slimes. A pyrometallurgical treatment is used to recover gold and silver from the decopperized anode slimes whereas tellurium is oxidized and skimmed off from the refining furnace as a Na2CO3-based slag. In the slag, tellurium is present as sodium tellurite (Na2TeO3), which is further water-leached from the slag. The first step in the conventional process for tellurium recovery consists of the precipitation of the tellurium contained in the leaching solution as tellurium dioxide (TeO2). The solid TeO2 is then dissolved under acidic conditions for its further reduction with sulfur dioxide gas (SO2). In this paper, an alternative route for tellurium production is presented in which a sodium tellurate [Na2TeO4] intermediate is obtained by oxidation of the sodium tellurite in an alkaline solution following the water leaching step. Sodium tellurate is then dissolved in acid media and high-purity tellurium is obtained by reduction with SO2 gas. Experimental tests under laboratory conditions indicate that the novel process yields higher precipitation selectivity for tellurium than the conventional process. A comparison of its efficiency concerning impurities co-precipitation with respect to the conventional process is discussed.

The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-to-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs) or representative dozer regions (RDRs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate “optimum” RDR mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each RDR. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of “accepting dilution” and “wasting ore” occurs. The reported RDR dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation. The reported RDR lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum RDR mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

CFA piling is a ?blind? construction process that relies heavily on the rig instrumentation to produce sound piles. If the data measured and recorded during construction can be made available to engineers and managers within hours after construction then there are many economic and quality control benefits that can be realised. A state of the art CFA instrumentation and data management process has been developed in the UK. The key components of the instrumentation, GSM data service and the central database are described. Many benefits to the business have been realised and, where possible, these are quantified.

Paiam is a new township in the high mountains of Papua New Guinea built in association with the Porgera Joint Venture mine, one of the world's largest and most remote open cut gold mines. The Paiam town project is an interesting and genuine attempt at building sustainability into a community associated with a mine. A result of a tri-party agreement between a resource developer, government and land owners, this town is a good example of appropriate utilisation of benefits, obtained from resource development, directed at achieving a sustainable environment at local and regional levels.   Mining brought technology and income to the region, although as most mine staff fly directly in and out, local landowners considered there was a limited flow of benefits within the nearby townships. An agreement with government and mine was reached that more mine personnel and their families be housed locally. In 1998, we, a firm of Landscape Architects and Heritage Consultants based in Cairns, Queensland, were engaged to assist develop the fledgling town of Paiam into a livable and sustainable town and to produce material that would convey that information to stakeholders.   The design focused on establishing a sustainable town, with livability, urban form, aesthetics and opportunities for economic, social and cultural development. Aiming to be a livable town for locals and mine staff it included a market place designed as a focus for town life, essential for social cohesion and economic opportunities.   Located at 2200 m on steep rainforest clad topography, the town development has been laid out using an appropriate urban form based on organic village layouts. Clusters of houses allow for a common public area so children's play is monitored assisting with a sense of community similar to a traditional defensible village. Aesthetical consideration helps in developing community pride whilst maximising potential for development of a tourist industry.   Opportunities for ongoing economic development were incorporated in the design and construction process. These included developing skills and trades to service the region and to provide skills, development, income opportunities and infrastructure to last beyond mine closure. Administration procedures were set in place to form the basis of good governance.   The shift from traditional subsistence lifestyle to a sustainable community with traditional attributes was the project's goal and is being achieved.

The Patawarta Diapir, located in the northern Flinders Ranges (South Australia), has intruded into late Proterozoic Wilpena Group sedimentary rocks. The diapir contains disrupted blocks of a wide variety of rock types, most of which can be correlated with the Lower Callanna Beds of Willouran age, in a matrix of predominantly carbonate and siltstone breccia. Mafic rocks in the diapir appear to predate intrusion of the diapir. As with many other diapirs in the Flinders Ranges, copper mineralization is present in the diapir and occurs as narrow veins consisting essentially of carbonate with chalcopyrite and pyrite that formed after diapiric intrusion.Fluid inclusion studies demonstrate that the mineralizing fluid was a Na-Ca-K-Cl brine; probably derived by expulsion of interstitial water following emplacement of the diapir, with dissolution of evaporites within the Callanna Beds sediments and enrichment in copper by reaction with these sediments and associated basic igneous rocks. Mineral assemblages combined with fluid inclusion and geochemical data indicate a possible environment of vein formation of T ÿ 165°C, pH ÿ 4.3 ± 0.9 and log fO2 ÿ -47.3 ± 0.5. Sulphur isotope analyses indicate d34Sfluid ÿ 10 per mil, suggesting evaporites in the Proterozoic sediments as the major source of the sulphur but with some additional sulphur from an igneous source, possibly leached from the malic rocks of the diapir.

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

"The New Orleans area has been repeatedly flooded by major storms and hurricanes since its French colonial era. After severe flooding in May 1995, the U.S. Congress authorized a massive flood protection project called the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Program (SELA) in 1996 to improve interior drainage in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany parishes. However, the project was not fully funded before the landing of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Rita, which breached many of the area’s levees and flooded 80 percent of the city. Finally, the project was fully funded in 2008 and has been worked on towards its 2017 completion. Another large project simultaneously worked on in the area is the Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS). This system was designed for a 100-year level of flood risk reduction. One particular project within the HSDRRS rendered successful due to an unconventional method of pile driving that was utilized to install sheet piles to reinforce an existing concrete I-wall. This paper will discuss how and why this non-vibratory method of sheet pile installation allowed the project to be successfully completed ahead of schedule.INTRODUCTIONSteel sheet piles were utilized on many of the SELA and HSDRRS projects for permanent cutoff walls under concrete I-walls or T-walls or for temporary earth retaining walls of drainage structures. Although the SELA Project was established in 1996 after severe flooding the year before, hardly any work was done on it until the two catastrophic storms Hurricanes known as Katrina and Rita triggered its revival. These two hurricanes also triggered the HSDRRS soon after the storms’ devastation. The SELA project authorized to improve interior drainage systems while the HSDRRS project was authorized to raise or restore levees and floodwalls mainly along Lake Pontchartrain, the Mississippi River, and Lake Borgne in addition to other areas. Figure 1 shows the SELA Projects that have been completed, are still under construction, or approved for construction. The projects fully highlighted in yellow within the map specified the press-in piling method. These improvements included drainage systems, pump stations, surge walls, and outfall canals as enhanced protection for future storms similar to Hurricane Katrina that caused so much damage by inundating the New Orleans area in August and September 2005 respectively (Facts and Figures, 2012). The completion of these projects were the responsibility of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District.Due to the fact that many of the projects were in densely populated areas, the Army Corps of Engineers specified a non-impact, non-vibratory press-in piling method for driving and extracting sheet piles for many of the projects to mitigate noise and vibration impacts. The soft soil conditions in the New Orleans area was also a contributing factor in the Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to specify this piling method due to the risk of settlement for existing historical as well as modern structures. In addition, there were other projects that elected to use the press-in method without any contractual requirements. One of these projects was the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal Reach II Emergency Interim Repair which was part of the HSDRRS project that has been under construction since its authorization in 2005 (Facts and Figures, 2012)."

The Bond Work Index became a universal standard, and is the most widely used measurement tool for comminution energy consumption. This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

Structurally- controlled deep leaching processes have removed vast quantities of carbonate from a substantial portion of the "silica-dolomite" enclosing the 500 copper orebody. Mine drainage subsequently allowed free access of air to the porous environment created and oxidation of sulphides commenced. During the mIne development stage the exothermic and temperature-dependent nature of these hydrolysis reactions resulted in a slow general elevation of ground temperatures. and levels of 90 - lOO°C were attained in restricted moist sulphide-rich areas.With the advent of production and extensive use of explosives, the oxidation processes were locally raised to new levels of activity. Direct interaction of explosives and sulphides in favourable conditions caused temperature rises to above 260 C. Above this point the dry oxidation of sulphides in air was initiated and rapid escalation to the vicinity of 800 C has been known to occur in isolated cases.Ground reactivity is a function of the complex interrelationship of several controlling factors and no simple index exists.Control techniques are presently aimed at prevention of temperature rises in the range 100 -260 C. Inhibition of the rapid dry oxidation processes above 260 C is difllcult and current efforts have met with only partial success.

Improved product development, assessment methods and evaluation studies of materials for oil sands applications have traditionally focused on low and high stress abrasion and slurry erosion resistance mechanisms, because they were considered to be the predominant wear modes prevailing in oil sands mining, transportation and bitumen recovery. More recently with the very successful introduction of oil sands hydraulic transportation systems, there has been increasing use of crusher systems in which materials of construction are also required to have good toughness and gouging abrasion properties to withstand impact and the severe indentation and ploughing forces that are involved. To assess material property requirements for mitigating this additional wear mechanism, jaw crusher gouging abrasion tests using a modified ASTM G81 procedure, have been carried out on a range of wear materials of interest for oil sands mining service. The method involves a comparison of the wear losses that occur for reference and selected test plates when a controlled amount of standard feed rock is comminuted in a laboratory jaw crusher. Among the classes of material evaluated have been Q&T plate steels, austenitic manganese steel, chromium and chromium molybdenum white irons as plain castings and in laminated forms and also chromium carbide and tungsten carbide overlaid wear plates.

This circular is the third of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. The first, Information Circular 6668, published in December 1932, discussed the problems involved in prospecting and exploration. The second, Information Circular 6689 (March 1933), dealt with the development of gravel deposits. This is part I of a paper designed to present a study of problems arising in the excavation of sand and revel and their delivery to the treatment plant. Other circulars are planned which will discuss preparation of the material for market, plant storage, and miscellaneous subject. Definitions For the purpose of this circular, excavation is defined as the recovery of sand and gravel from developed natural deposits and their delivery to a plant for market preparation.

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Greenlee County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. A similar program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was generally conceded to have contributed substantially to improving the efficiency of mining operations. The morenci open-pit mine (see photograph, fig. 1) is in southeastern [zona] (fig. 2), on U.S. Highway 666 about 5 miles north of Clifton, county at of Greenlee County. The concentrator and smelter are near the mine at an altitude of about 4,400 feet. Figure 3 is a map of the mine and plant.
