INTRODUCTION This paper is a conceptual resume of engineering studies that have been evaluated by the Mine Department related to production planning over the next twenty-five years. These studies have been required principally because: a) The Rio Blanco Mine, property of CODELCO- CHILE, Andina Division, faces an operational problem due to heavy snowfall in winter which enters the surface subsidence area of the cave; later melts and filters into the broken ore creating a product that is difficult to transfer through the orepasses. The phenomenon is especially serious during the spring and has been increasing over the years. This element that complicates extraction will be controlled with the procedures proposed or others that may be determined in the future. b) The mine will increase production in 1985 by 40% . LOCATION The deposit is located in the central region of the Andes Cordillera, at an altitude of approximately 3,600 m above sea level, 50 km to the northeast of Santiago. The main camp is Saladillo (at 1,300 meters above sea level) located 30 km from the mine. Due to its location, the mine is subject to heavy snow storms during the year. On many occasions the road from Saladillo to the mine is closed because of storms and avalanches. For this reason the company has self-sufficient civil facilities near the mine to cover the needs and welfare of the working force. These housing facilities are connected to the mine by underground passages. For the same weather related reason the primary and secondary crushers, and the entire concentrator complex are located underground. GEOLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS Geology Based on the geologic model developed for the Rio Blanco deposit and comparing it with standard models pertaining to copper porphyries, it can be concluded that this deposit is part of the apical sector of a mega deposit and therefore the projections of the Xio Blanco cop per mine are very favorable, both in lateral area and depth. In order to confirm and evaluate these geo- logic features, an extensive drilling program was started at the Rio Blanco deposit. Diamond drill holes were drilled to depth as well as in the areas named "La Americana", "Don Luis" and "Elguin". The area explored by the drill program is 3 km long in a north-south direction and 1.5 km wide in an east-west direction. In some sections the drilling in depth reached the 2,300 m elevation mark. The lowermost level in the mine is at elevation 3,070 m. These new studies have permitted the recognition of the following lithologic units: Andesite Andesite Breccia Granodiorites, Rio Blanco and Cascada Granodiorite Breccia Quartzmonzonite Porphyry Monzodiorites and Latites Tourmaline Breccia Dacite Pipe and Rhyolite marginal ring. The mineralogical study permits the definition of three stages of hypogene and hydroterma1 alteration of importance with a time-altered sequence. These stages correspond to a late hydrothermal stage. IN 1948, the writer and his associates determined the surface tension of solid copper by balancing the force of surface tension in a very fine wire against an external load.' At that time we, in common with other early workers, assumed that grain boundary energy in a pure metal is very small in comparison to the energy of an external surface. Accordingly, we neglected the internal surface energy of the coarse-grained specimens. Since that time, experimental evidence has accumulated showing that grain boundary energy, far from being small, is generally about one-third of the energy of an external surface.2-4 This is sufficient to introduce a significant error into our determination. The differential equation governing equilibrium is: wdl - yds, + y*ds2 [I] rather than wdl = yds as originally written. w is the balancing force in dynes, 1 the length of the specimen, sl the external and s2, the internal surface area, y the copper/ copper vapor surface tension, and y* the grain boundary tension. Fortunately, we had made for another purpose a careful study of the size and shape of the grains, and found that the boundaries, with rare exceptions, traversed the specimens and were perpendicular to the wire axis. For this case, eq 1 leads to w = rry -(n) r2y* [2] where r is the wire radius and (n is the number of grains per unit length. A count of some twenty 5-mil wires indicated that - n became 80 & 10 after a short anneal near the melting point, and remained nearly constant for as long as 96 hr at temperature. An assumption of y* = 1/3y leads to a defining eauation for r: [31 The term in the brackets may be considered a correction factor applied to eq 11 of ref. 1. Upon applying this factor, the surface tension of solid copper at its melting point is found to be 1650 & 100 dynes per cm, rather than 1370 as previously reported.' The new temperature coefficient is —0.55 dynes per cm per "C. Grain boundary energy is more significant than surface energy to the physical metallurgist. It is evident from eq 2 that a series of experiments with wires of different grain size can lead to an evaluation of y*. The details of such an experiment are being worked out now. References 1 H. Y.-I should like to ask Mr. Neale how the members of the production committees at the individual mines, who came from the mine workers themselves, were chosen or appointed; also from what classes of employees they usually came? J. B. NEALE.-In the union fields, they were chosen by a local. In the non-union fields, they were chosen either by the men in mass meeting or by the company officials. The last way was very unsatisfactory because it gave the men an opportunity to say that they were going to be passed upon as to whether they were slackers or not, by men chosen by the company. When they were chosen by the locals or at mass meetings of the workers, the appointments have been very much more satisfactory. R. D. HALL, ? New York, N. Y.-The matter of inefficiency on the part of the operator is one that I think we may well take into account, because there is a very large inefficiency on the part of the coal operator; it has arisen from reasons almost beyond his control and will continue for these same reasons. It is no use arguing a moral responsibility on the part of the operator, when you make efficiency very largely a loss to the operator who puts it in force. If you ask a man working on a clay wage to work with more efficiency. he says, "Well, I may do it or I may not," it all depends how he feels, but he does not lose anything financially by not working hard. If you ask the man who is working by the ton to put out more tons, he makes a profit by putting out more tons. How is it with the operator? If he gives a man all the cars he needs and all the power he needs, if he runs after his working men and waits on them, he does not get his coal out any cheaper than before.. He gives the man a better chance and there is more efficiency, but at the same time he has increased his expenses all along the line. At the end of the year he finds that his profits have been less than if he had had less efficiency. The efficiency is really against him in many ways. Because he gets a larger tonnage, he reduces the overhead to a certain extent; but hiss tonnage may not be any greater because he may work fewer days. As Mr. Taylor remarked some tine ago, supposing he puts in a machine that is very much more effective than any he had before, he has the same scale; the miner gets out more coal, but he himself does not get any benefit out of it because he has a scale fixed, so much per ton.

The fundamental role of diffusion in many reactions occurring in solid metals has long been recognized, and there have been careful measurements of rates of diffusion in numerous alloy systems; but our understanding of the atomic mechanism by which diffusion occurs is scarcely in an advanced state.l-3 It is doubtful that this mechanism can ever be directly ascertained; rather, all imaginable mechanisms must be examined and the one that is in best accord with such data as can be obtained from suitably chosen experiments should be selected. Because of its relative simplicity, diffusion in a system containing only one kind of atomic species—commody called self-diffusion—is of considerable theoretical interest. It may be expected that diffusion theory will not be advanced appreciably until a wide variety of diffusion experiments—of which diffusion in a chemical concentration gradient and self-diffusion are two important types—are carefully performed and inter-compared. Aside from the purely theoretical interest in self-diffusion measurements, such studies will be of considerable engineering importance. The rate of any process in a pure metal requiring the movement of atoms, of which recrystallization and creep are two familiar examples, will be understood more readily with the aid of self-diffusion data.† Self-diffusion implies the diffusion of something into its exact counterpart; the detection of such a process is patently impossible, and it is necessary to substitute for it the diffusion of one isotope (in this case radioactive) into another isotope (in this case stable) of the same chemical element. There is, however, no reason to suppose that a radioactive atom will not diffuse at the same rate as its stable isotope, for all of the isotopes of the same element have exactly the same chemical properties; neither the difference in nuclear energy nor the difference in mass would be expected to exercise an important influence in this phenomenon. In this sense, self-diffusion may be thought of as the diffusion of radioactive atoms down a radioactivity concentration gradient, just as usual diffusion is the diffusion of one kind of atom down its chemical concentration gradient. The first measurements of self-difiusion were made by von Hevesy4-6 using the radioactive lead isotope thorium B in ordinary lead. The recent development of means for producing artificial radioactive elements has made possible similar measurements on gold,7, 8 copper,2, 9 and zinc.10, 11 Many of the data that have been obtained are rather poor, and no adequate reason has been given for their poorness; it appears, however, that the unsatisfactory results are characteristic of the particular experimental procedure employed, and not of self-diffusion measurements in themselves. The experimental technique that has yielded the poorer results is the deposition of a thin layer of radioactive atoms on the surface of a specimen and the determination of the rate of inward diffusion

A capillary tube variable volume cell is described, which has operated satisfactorily over a range of 100°F and 3,500 psi to 550°F and 1,500 psi. The cell contents are entirely visible over the length of the capillary with the exception of a space at the top amounting to three per cent of the total volume. Observations on the critical behavior of simple systems have been greatly facilitated by the apparatus, it being possible to establish the critical conditions for a particular mixture in the course of a day's run. INTRODUCTION Many types of apparatus have been designed for obtaining data on the phase relationships of hydrocarbon systems. Such apparatus can in general be subdivided into two classifications; (l), indirect measurement of phase volume, and (2), direct visual observation of phase volume, each of which has outstanding advantages and disadvantages. Indirect measurement of phase volume requires the use of rather elaborate apparatus including internal probes in which are located the device for determining the locus of the interface between phases. Such equipment is by its very nature costly, and is complex from the standpoint of operating technique. Probing techniques can be used, however, over wide ranges of temperature and pressure with a high degree of reproducibility. Apparatus for visual observation of phase behavior obviously has the advantage of enabling the experimenter to see exactly what takes place, but because the material to be tested is contained in a cell constructed of both metal and glass, is limited severely as to the temperature range of operation. Furthermore. the maximum pressure usually is limited by the choice of material used for sealing the glass to the metal, and by the strength of the glass itself. In the interest of increased efficiency of observation, as much of the cell as possible should be visible to the eye. Glass capillary tubes have been used successfully but have always given difficulty at the metal-to-glass seal. An apparatus has been devised to overcome the problems of sealing and resistance to temperature effects that have heretofore been the limiting factor with glass apparatus in the observation of phase volumes at elevated temperature and pressure. APPARATUS The objective which dictated the general arrangement of the apparatus (Figs. 1 and 2) was simplicity of operation. The air bath, A, was constructed of an iron framework to which was attached approximately one inch of glass wool bats which were covered on the outside with "Masonite." A roughly octagonal center piece was installed to provide forced circulation of the air by the fan, B, past the heaters, D, cell, F, and thermoregulator, C, respectively. The entire top of the box is removable to facilitate charging of the cell and to permit easy maintenance. In the rapidly growing industry of elemental-phosphorus production from western phosphates, most of the vanadium and chromium contained in the phosphate rock collect in the byproduct ferro-phosphorus. Results are presented of a completed laboratory project, which developed a tristage crystallization and hydrolysis process for recovering strategic vanadium and chromium, as well as a valuable phosphorus product, after extracting these elements from the ferro-phosphorus by roasting and leaching. THE Phosphoria formation in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah contains the Nation's largest reserve of phosphate rock. A unique feature of the Phosphoria beds is their content of a fraction of a percentage each of vanadium, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. Vanadium is the most important as to quantity and value. Small-scale tests by the Bureau of Mines at Albany, Oregon, in 1947, indicated that most of the vanadium in the phosphate rock collects in the ferrophosphorus product of smelting. Subsequent electric smelting operations to produce elemental phosphorus from western phosphate rock (experimentally by TVA and industrially at Pocatello, Idaho) have shown that the vanadium and other metals in the rock are to a large extent recovered in concentrated form in the ferrophosphorus byproduct. This paper reports the results of completed laboratory research on the recovery of vanadium from ferrophosphorus, which was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines at Albany in 1948 as the first phase of a project entitled, "Vanadium and Fluorine from Western Phosphates." The various vanadium-recovery methods investigated, including the roast-leach method that showed most promise and was studied in greatest detail, are discussed in an earlier publication.' Subsequent systematic study of the roast-leach method of extracting vanadium from western ferrophosphorus developed the more effi- cient tristage crystallization process, which is the subject of this paper. Process Development The investigations were made on ferrophosphorus produced in the electric smelting of elemental phosphorus from western phosphate rock. The TVA provided two sample lots of ferrophosphorus produced in pilot plant smelting of phosphatic shale from the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho. The Westvaco Chemical Div. of the Food Machinery & Chemical Corp. supplied two sample lots of ferrophosphorus produced by its phosphorus smelter at Pocatello, Idaho. The analyses of all four lots are shown in Table I. Westvaco lot B was the starting material for the more recent tests. The roast-leach process for recovering vanadium from western ferrophosphorus, as originally developed, employed the following principal steps: Roasting of a mixture of pulverized ferrophosphorus, soda ash, and salt; extraction of the water-soluble vanadium, phosphorus, and chromium compounds from the calcine by leaching, settling, and decanta-tion of the pregnant solution; primary crystallization of trisodium phosphate from the pregnant solution; purification of the trisodium phosphate crystals by dissolution in water and secondary crystallization; purification of the pregnant vanadium solution from the primary crystallization step by adding calcium chloride to precipitate calcium phosphate; and hydrolysis of vanadium red cake from the puri-

LOCATION AND HISTORY THE San Manuel property is in townships 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and Salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern Pinal County, and is about 3;2 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River and one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona. The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The Old Hat district was prospected prior to the Civil War, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the St. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage or grade. It is estimated that not more than 5o tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the San Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried on drilling from November 1943 to February 1945. Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June I944 and an option agreement was made with the owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp., and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. A drilling program was laid out to conform to the Bureau of Mines pattern, and drilling started in December 1944. San Manuel Copper Corp. was incorporated September 1945, and has carried on the exploration program to the present time. J. P. Nielsen—The data that Dr. Dunn and his associates have been obtaining are welcome checks on the theoretical aspects of grain boundary energies. With reference to the comments on the validity of the inter-facial tension concept, I should like to say that I have been having considerable difficulty myself in untangling the confusion between "interfacial tension" and "interfacial energy." The confusion however resolved itself for me when I learned that "interfacial tension" for solids, or at least crystals, is used with two distinct meanings. One meaning12. ' "hat is implied for "interfacial tension" is the work necessary to produce or increase the surface of the solid in question by a unit area, temperature and pressure held constant. This comes from the somewhat surprising but simple fact that surface tension and surface energy in the case of liquids are identical quantities. This synonymity has carried over to crystals, where it should be kept in mind that the tension connotation has meaning only by analogy with liquids and that no real stresses are being referred to. The only reason that there is apparently a set of stresses acting at a grain boundary junction is the optical illusion that liquid interfaces are being observed for the grain boundaries. The other meaning3,14,15 for the term has to do with actual states of stress in the surface of a material as would be measured by a system of forces applied to the surface to equate the surface stress state with that in the body of the crystal. J. B. Hess—Since the authors have proposed that the surface tension concept should be discarded in order to deal with the general case of interface energies in solids, their attention should be called to a recent paper by Gurney." The latter has shown, from a thermodynamic argument, that surface tension is a valid concept in solids. In fact, Gurney has rejected the idea that surface tensions are merely mathematical fiction and, instead, has given an interpretation of their physical reality. Finally, he has concluded that, as long as appreciable atomic migration takes place, specific surface energies and surface tensions must be equivalent in solids as well as in liquids. Accordingly, the authors' eqs 2 and 3 can be written with equal accuracy in terms of interface tensions, simply by replacing each E,! with its numerically and dimension-ally equivalent Interfacial tension ?,,. If the interfacial tensions (or specific energies) are independent of interfacial orientation, as is true in liquids, then the general equations that define the geometry at equilibrium of the common junction of three interfaces reduce to eq 1. However, neglect of the effect of boundary orientation is never completely justified theoretically' in dealing with crystalline solids; hence, use of eq 1 in such cases must always be considered as an approximation, though clearly a reasonable one for many purposes.1,2 At the same time, one should not be surprised that the assumption that interface tensions in solids are free from orientation

ThE phase relationships for the MnO-MnS system have been investigated only in the eutectic region. wentrupl reported a eutectic at 1280°C (2345°F) with approximately 50 wt pct of each component, as based on the earlier work of Andrew, Maddocks, and Fowler.2 More recently silverman3 corrected these figures to 2275° ±10°F (1246°C) with 63 wt pct MnS and 37 pct MnO. Neither Wentrup nor Silverman investigated the solid-solution limits in this system. However, Wentrup did suggest with his phase diagram sketch that the maximum solubility of MnS in MnO is 10 wt pct, and the solubility of MnO in MnS is nearer 20 wt pct, Fig. 1. These figures have been utilized in subsequent publications without further verification.4 There had been evidence found in this laboratory that the above solid-solution figures were high. An investigation was therefore conducted using the following procedure. Samples containing MnO and MnS were contained in platinum foil, heated just above the eutectic temperature in a purified nitrogen at- mosphere, and quenched into distilled water. The MnO had been prepared by calcining reagent grade MnCO3 in nitrogen at 1400°C. Only MnO was detected in subsequent X-ray diffraction analyses. The MnS had been prepared by sulfur deoxidation of reagent grade MnSO4 according to the reaction: MnSO4 + S2 ? MnS + 2SO2 The details of the sulfide preparation procedure, which utilized atmospheric sulfur pressures at 950°C, are discussed elsewhere.5 The sulfur content of the sulfide was determined to be 36.8 * 0.2 pct, which matches the stoichiometric value of 36.9 pct. No evidence of either MnO or MnSO4 was detected microscopically or by X-ray diffraction. The single-phase combinations of MnO and MnS at the eutectic temperature indicate the limit of solid solution as shown in Fig. 2(a) and (c), and the revised phase diagram is shown in Fig. 2(d). The melting temperature for MnO is that provided by Glasser.6 The eutectic temperature of 1232° ± 5°C and eutectic composition of 64 wt pct MnS are in close agreement with Silverman's correction of Wentrup's work. The maximum solubility of MnO in MnS was determined to be 1.7 ± 0.2 wt pct. The maximum solubility of MnS in MnO was determined to be 1.8 ± 0.2 wt pct. These figures represent the lower limit for the presence of liquid at 1260°C and are significantly lower than the earlier estimated solid-solution figures. Furthermore. the maximum pressure usually is limited by the choice of material used for sealing the glass to the metal, and by the strength of the glass itself. In the interest of increased efficiency of observation, as much of the cell as possible should be visible to the eye. Glass capillary tubes have been used successfully but have always given difficulty at the metal-to-glass seal. An apparatus has been devised to overcome the problems of sealing and resistance to temperature effects that have heretofore been the limiting factor with glass apparatus in the observation of phase volumes at elevated temperature and pressure. APPARATUS The objective which dictated the general arrangement of the apparatus (Figs. 1 and 2) was simplicity of operation. The air bath, A, was constructed of an iron framework to which was attached approximately one inch of glass wool bats which were covered on the outside with "Masonite." A roughly octagonal center piece was installed to provide forced circulation of the air by the fan, B, past the heaters, D, cell, F, and thermoregulator, C, respectively. THE fundamental role of diffusion in many reactions occurring in solid metals has long been recognized, and there have been careful measurements of rates of diffusion in numerous alloy systems, but our understanding of the atomic mechanism by which diffusion occurs is scarcely in an advanced state 1-3 It is doubtful that this mechanism can ever he directly ascertained, rather, all imaginable mechanisms must be examined and the one that is in best accord with such data as can be obtained from suitably chosen experiments should be selected Because of its relative simplicity, diffusion in a system containing only one kind of atomic species-commonly called self-diffusion-is of considerable theoretical interest It may be expected that diffusion theory will not be advanced appreciably until a wide variety of diffusion experiments-of which diffusion in a chemical concentration gradient and self-diffusion are two important types-are carefully performed and inter-compared Aside from the purely theoretical interest in self-diffusion measurements, such studies will be of considerable engineering importance The rate of any process in a pure metal requiring the movement of atoms, of which recrystallization and creep are two familiar examples, will be understood more readily with the aid of self-diffusion data † Self-diffusion implies the diffusion of something into its exact counterpart, the detection of such a process is patently impossible, and it is-necessary to substitute for it the diffusion of one isotope (in this case radioactive) into another isotope (in this case stable) of the same chemical element There is, however, no reason to suppose that a radioactive atom will not diffuse at the same rate as its stable isotope, for all of the isotopes of the same element have exactly the same chemical properties, neither the difference in nuclear energy nor the difference in mass would be expected to exercise an important influence in this phenomenon In this sense, self-diffusion may be thought of as the diffusion of radioactive atoms down a radioactivity concentration gradient, just as usual diffusion is the diffusion of one kind of atone down its chemical concentration gradient The first measurements of self-diffusion ii ere made by von Hevesy4-6 using the radioactive lead isotope thorium B in ordinary lead The recent development of means for producing artificial radioactive elements has made possible similar measurements on gold,7,8 copper,2,9 and zinc 10 11 Many of the data that have been obtained are rather poor, and no adequate reason has been given for their poorness, it appears, however, that the unsatisfactory results are characteristic of the particular experimental procedure employed, and not of self-diffusion measurements in themselves The experimental technique that has yielded the poorer results is the deposition of a thin layer of radioactive atoms on the surface of a specimen and the determination of the rate of inward diffusion

In the presentation which follows, wash-ability curves, such as are commonly used in making studies preliminary to the cleaning of any coal or to the concentration of any mineral, have been reduced in each instance to a single straight line; thus all the most important characteristics of the coal or mineral are represented in a form more advantageous than that in which such data usually are shown. To obtain consistent results, float-and-sink data must be based on a single definite narrow size range, which may be designated "a coal unit." It will be shown that such units, each embodying a different size range, can be grouped to form what may be termed "a composite coal." A three-dimensional presentation will emerge, which will closely identify the coal, illustrate its characteristics in a new manner and explain many obscure facts. Float-and-sink Tests For the preliminary study of any cleaning or concentration problem, or in the control of any operation, float-and-sink tests must be made. The results of these tests are grouped in tabular form and then illustrated in various systems of curves; but if such a graphic representation is to have the utmost practical value, it must offer at least the following advantages: (I) It must be easier to read than the tabular results, and (2) it must be easy to plot, check and interpolate. The first requirement will be attained by reducing the number of curves to a minimum, and the second by some system of representation that will use only straight lines. Of the many washing curves now in use, only the "recovery curve," often known as the "composite curve"—a somewhat misleading term—will be considered; Any point on the recovery curve will show what percentage of weight of clean coal can be recovered when the mineral is washed at a certain specific gravity. As an example, the tests listed below Fig. I are illustrated in the drawing by a curve obtained by plotting (I) as abscissas the ash content of the coal recovered and (2) as ordinates the corresponding percentage of refuse discarded; but, in general practice, instead of writing down that weight, it is customary to set down its complement, which is the corresponding weight of coal recovered. From this curve can be deduced the information necessary for the solution of most practical problems. New Form of Graphic Presentation The resemblance of the recovery curve ill Fig. 1, or, for that matter, the recovery curve obtained in common practice! to a Power curve is apparent. A DDITIONAL experimental data are presented in this note on a phenomenon which has been touched on but lightly in the literature. The common magnesium base rolling alloy (AZ31B) contains about 3 pet A1 and 1 pet Zn. When cold rolled, it hardens until it starts to break up in the rolls at 30 to 50 pet reduction. When it is heated after rolling to full hardness, it softens. However, other magnesium alloys have shown themselves capable of being cold rolled indefinitely, provided the ratio of roll diameter to starting gage is sufficiently high. As measured by the tensile test, these alloys actually soften when the reduction becomes large (60 to 90 pct). A subsequent heating at 300' to 500°F can produce hardening of this metal. Heating at higher temperatures (600' to 800°F) causes recrystalliza-tion and softening. Menzen' has shown that a magnesium base alloy can be cold rolled without intermediate anneals as much as 90 pet. The alloy studied, Mg-1.5 pet Mn, softened considerably between 20 and 90 pet reduction, as measured by tensile properties; a decrease in yield strength of 30 pet, and an increase in elongation from 3.2 to 16.7 pet (longitudinal direction of the sheet). However, Menzen gives no data on the reaction of this metal. to heating. Ansel and Betterton2 and Hurst and Hatch3 report a similar effect in Mg-1.5 pet Mn-0.1 pet Ca. Their data show an initial hardening, followed by softening. The former authors also show that the alloy softened by cold rolling will harden when heated at low temperatures, and that these effects are absent in Mg-3 pet Al-1 pet Zn. In the course of work4, 5 some years ago, the author observed similar effects with alloys containing cerium, thorium, or zirconium; but not with elements like aluminum, silver, or zinc. Table IA contains the results of an experiment which shows these effects rather well. A binary alloy with 0.3 pet total rare earths (Mischmetal* added) was rolled hot to 1/16 in. and then annealed to full softness by heating 30 min at 800°F. Rolling was continued at 1.5 pet per pass to 80 pet total reduction on 8 in. diam rolls. The metal was harder after 20 pet work than initially but, at 80 pet reduction, properties were back to their original values. Heating for 1 hr at 450°F produced about the same hardness whether the reduction was 20 or 80 pet. At intermediate reductions, the metal hardened, but not to as high values. Extensive cold rolling may also be carried out on metal hot rolled at temperatures sufficiently low to produce a semihard temper. Mg-0.6 pet Zr was rolled to 0.1 in. at 700° to 800°F, 30 pet per pass. As shown in Table IB, a further cold reduction of 85 pet, at 1.5 pet per pass, definitely softened the metal.

AT the time this investigation was initiated variations were observed in the quality of different heats of basic electric-furnace steels, although they had been made under purportedly similar conditions. This indicated that these variations were related to normally unobserved variations in the character of the bath, especially during the "refining" period. Although the slags used for this operation are commonly referred to as "reducing" slags, and are regarded as having a "deoxidizing" action on the bath, no reliable measurements of this action were available. It was decided, therefore, to study the behavior of oxygen in the metal for a large enough number of heats to learn its normal variations and to relate these variations to regularly observed conditions [f] operation. The most important general conclusion reached was that the time a heat is held under a reducing slag should be reduced to a minimum, which was about an hour and a half under the conditions studied. Beyond this time no observable beneficial effects are obtained from the reducing slags, insofar as oxygen and sulphur content of the bath are concerned. It is likely that added time may increase hydrogen content as well as heat costs. The oxygen content of the bath is never reduced below the amount in equilibrium with the carbon. Concurrently with this work, J. S. Marsh1 presented data that supplement and support many of the results of this paper. PROCEDURE The work was done in two different electric-furnace shops of the same plant. The selection of heats was made primarily with regard to the convenience of heat schedules. Companion slag and metal samples were taken just prior to slag-off and throughout the refining period for an initial set of 17 heats, and before slag-off and near tap for an additional 13 heats. Slag sampling presented no particular problem; a spoonful of slag was poured onto a metal plate and when sufficiently cool was sealed in an airtight container. Sampling the metal for oxygen presented a more complex problem. Because of the lack of previous experience in sampling electric-furnace baths, a number of methods were compared. Chilled Wedge Samples2 An unkilled metal sample is removed from tie furnace in a well-slagged carbometer spoon and poured immediately into a heavy copper mold designed to provide rapid freezing. Three different types of molds were used to determine the optimum for electric-furnace heats. The Big Wedge Mold (a) was a 4 by 4 by 4-in. split copper mold, yielding a wedge-shaped casting 1 in. wide, 1 ½ in. long, and ¼ in. maximum thickness, and was finally adopted as the most satisfactory design. The Long Wedge Mold (b) was a 2 by 2 by 5 ¼ -in. split copper mold, yielding a wedge-shaped casting 1 in. wide, 2 ¾ in. long, and ¼ in. maximum thickness. The Small Wedge Mold (c) was 2 by 2 by 4-in. split copper mold, yielding a wedge-shaped casting 1 in. wide, 1 ½ in. long, and ¼ in. maximum thickness.

One of the difficulties encountered in the preparation of titanium specimens for transmission electron microscopy is the formation of a surface hydride phase during the thinning operation at ambient temperatures. This necessarily destroys contrast, obscures features of interest, and often leads to misleading results. By cooling the polishing solution to temperatures below 0°C this problem has been overcome in the past.' However, since the cooling procedure is somewhat inconvenient, a technique was developed at this laboratory for thinning titanium at room temperature. The material examined was A-70 grade commercial-purity titanium purchased from the Crucible Steel Co. of America. The mechanical and thermal treatments, described elsewhere,* yielded a recrystallized grain size of 4 to 5 p. A slice, 0.5 mm thick and 1.5 mm wide, was cut from a bulk specimen2 using a diamond cut-off wheel. The sample was then coated with paraffin wax. Two concentric holes, about 0.03 in. in diam, one at each broad face, were scribed through the wax to the surface of the metal. Subsequent polishing for several minutes resulted in a preferentially thinned or "dimpled" region. Thereafter, the wax was removed and the entire specimen polished to the point of breakthrough at the base of the dimple. Polishing was effected chemically in a solution comprised of 30 pct HF and 70 pct HN03 by volume, kept at room temperature (20" to 25OC). The specimens were mounted in a stereo holder and examined at 100 kv in a Philips l00 B Electron Microscope. A micrograph from a foil prepared in this way is shown in Fig. 1. Several points are noteworthy. This electron micrograph shows neither evidence for the formation of a hydride phase due to specimen preparation nor, moreover, any obvious surface contamination in electron-transparent areas of a freshly prepared foil. Localized variations in foil thickness observed in some specimens seem to be a characteristic of this chemical polish but do not seriously detract from foil quality. With care, the lifetime of a good specimen exceeded 2 hr in the beam. On the other hand, the exposure of a sample to air at atmospheric pressure, when still warm from the beam, clearly resulted in the deterioration of a formerly clean area just previously in the field of view. An example in Fig. 2 of a contaminated region reveals features, and "spots", not unlike those observed in much purer material by Yamane and Ueda. Consequently, one can conclude that: 1) titanium can be thinned satisfactorily in a solution at room temperature for transmission electron microscopy; 2) large-scale precipitates, >50A in diam, are absent in commercial-purity, recrystallized, furnace-cooled, A-70 titanium containing about 3800 wt ppm interstitials and the same amount of iron; 3) care must be taken not to attribute surface contaminants to precipitates. his paper discusses how the following formation characteristics can be determined mathematically from drill-stem test pressure charts: true formation pressures, effective permeability of the entire section tested, well productivities, wellbore damage, and possible detection of barriers (faults, pinchouts, etc.). This paper also presents a practical method for im-mediate determination of eflective permeability and well-bore damage from successful double shut-in pressure tests. A list of recommendations for improving the reliability of drill-stem rest pressures is also presented. INTRODUCTION A drill-stem test is a temporary completion designed to sample the formation fluid and to establish the possibility of commercial production. Early pressure recording devices were used merely to verify proper operation of the testing tool. Until recently the accuracy of the pressure gauges has been insufficient for any reliable quantitative use of the recorded pressures. In view of the need for more reliable formation evaluation and as a result of the recent interest in exploration work employing the concept of hydrodynamic en-trapment,1,2,3,4 better pressure recording gauges are now in use. These devices can record pressure within 1 per cent above 1,000 psig and can detect differential pressures as low as 1/2 psig. In addition to formation pressure, several other reservoir characteristics can be determined from DST charts; namely, well productivity, formation permeability, wellbore damage, and the possible existence of bar- riers (faults, pinchouts, changes in permeability, etc.). This paper presents a practical method to interpret DST pressure charts for formation pressures and many other reservoir properties, a method that has been developed in analyzing approximately 4,000 DST charts during the last five years. The techniques used are a composite of published articles on drill-stem testing5,6, together with well-known pressure build-up analysis methods. THEORY It has been shown7,8 that the following equation may be used for analysis of pressure build-up curves: Po - Pw = 162.6 qu/kh log ( to + ?/?) .....(1) When this equation is applied to the curves obtained in drill-stem testing, the assumptions and boundary con-ditions are more nearly realized than in conventional flow and build-up tests on producing wells. Zak and Griffen9 have recently discussed in detail the use of this equation in analyzing DST charts. One of the problems with DST curves is the lack of reservoir data for precise analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop empirical rules and field methods for analyzing DST charts in quantity. For this reason, the empirical methods presented in this paper have been developed, and their derivation is found in Appendices A and B. METHOD USED FOR ACCURATE READING OF DRILL-STEM TEST CHARTS In order to apply the pressure build-up theory to DST charts, it is necessary to obtain a digitized expression for the pressure and time data recorded by the pressure gauge. FEW men reach middle life without having had the experience of failure in one or more undertakings; and most of us can look back with gratitude to help or advice given us by friends at critical periods of our lives. If, as men, we ask and take the benefit of such aid, why should we expect our sons to be stronger? A parent can make no greater mistake than to send a boy, however steady and intelligent he may be, off' to school or college, and expect the boy always to cope successfully with all the new conditions and new difficulties that may confront him. This is undoubtedly more the case with a freshman, in his first year at college, than in later years, or than it is with a boy at day- or boarding-school, where the boy receives a greater degree of care and oversight than can be given to the young man entering college; of all periods in life, the youth in his freshman year-fresh from the overshadowing care of home and school-may need judicious advice and timely aid. The change from the restraint of home and school to the freedom of college life is sudden and marked, and it is in this the first year of the boy or young man of 17, 18, or 19 years of age, that some tactful, judicious aid should be near him in his work and course. Some boys go to college so well prepared that they become careless and finally fall behind in their work from over-confidence. Others meet trouble from ambitiously trying to do more than their previous preparation, or physical or mental strength, can sustain. Others fall behind from illness-from injuries-from natural inability to grasp at first, without more aid than comes to them in the regular course of instruction, the higher mathematics-or mayhap the modern languages, or other subjects presented by the advanced curriculum of the present day.
