This report is the 22d in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations.2 3/ A summary of work published during 1957 and of work in progress is presented. Details regarding the subjects treated in the publications may be found by referring to articles cited in the footnotes. The objective of the coal work of the Bureau of Mines is to obtain information that will lead to improved production and utilization of coal, thus conserving a most important national asset.4 5/ Though studies of mining methods and exploration of various coalfields ma; contribute directly to improved production, no less so does the work in health and safety. The many problems relating to chemical and physical properties of coal reflect the need for an understanding of these properties for the most effective use of coal in its various fields of application and for the development of new methods of processing coal. Studies of existing and proposed processes of combustion, carbonization, gasification and hydrogenation of coal are necessary for increased efficiency in its use. Engineering service provided by the Bureau is of direct value in the conservation program in preventing waste. Stations where the main coal activities of the Bureau are carried out are shown in the following list:

A rock mass classification system has been developed for support estimation in mines using caving methods. The developed system (MBR System) accepts readily-obtainable geotechnical properties, and mining geometry, to develop a rating that permits recommendations for drift support in block caving mines. The data base includes major active United States caving mines. The method is intended to be used for planning and estimating purposes and for preliminary support design. The Manual explains the organization and nature of the MBR System, its derivations, details of required input data, methods for assessing the data and for developing rock mass ratings, and techniques for selecting the most appropriate mine support recognizing mine requirements and desired stability. A worked example is provided.

Introduction This paper is prepared from data gathered for a similar paper to be submitted to the United States Bureau of Mines, for publication as one of their information circulars. It covers the history and development of the present milling practice at Premier. The authors wish to acknowledge the assistance and suggestions given during the preparation of this paper by D. L. Pitt, Manager of the Premier Gold Mining Company, Limited; also their indebtedness to various members of the Engineering Staff and of the Accounting Department who have assisted materially in gathering the data used. Location The Premier mine and mill are situated in northern British Columbia, approximately fifteen miles north of the head of Portland canal, in the Salmon River section, about half a mile east of the Alaska-British Columbia boundary line where it crosses die Salmon river. The mill is located on a rather steep hillside on the horizon of the main haulage level of the mine, and is within a hundred feet of the mouth of the tunnel. Both the mine and mill are connected with tidewater at Stewart, B.C., by an aerial tramway (1) eleven and one-half miles in length, which delivers both ore and concentrate to the bunkers at the dock for shipment to the smelters. All mine and mill supplies are transported from Stewart dock to Premier over this tramway, except heavy machinery. Heavy pieces have to be hauled either by truck in summer or sleighs in winter over a good road which runs from Stewart dock to Premier.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the performance characteristics of a 30-day around-the-clock gasification-pelletizing test conducted in October and November of 1980 with North Dakota Indianhead lignite. Gasification was conducted in a commercial-size, 6.5-it-diam, Single-stage, fixed-bed, atmospheric pressure producer with a rated capacity of about 30 million Btu/hr. Iron oxide pellets made from a commercial hematite concentrate were fired with the low-Btu gas in a 2.8-ft-diam by 35-ft-long pilot plant rotary kiln at a rate of 900 lb of pellets per hour. Gasifier operations at fuel feed rates up to 3 tons of lignite per hour and hematite pellet induration with raw 160-Btu/std ft3 lignite gas are described.

Busca-se determinar os parâmetros que governam o mesmo, suas limitações e se a conformação em matriz pode ser uma alternativa viável a processos mais complexos, como por exemplo, hidroconformação. É feita a caracterização do material (uma liga de alumínio ABNT 6061) através do levantamento de curvas de escoamento, perfis de microdureza Vickers, e deformabilidade quanto ao surgimento de trincas e de instabilidade plástica (flamblagem). Ao final são conduzidas simulações através de elementos finitos e experimentos do processo de expansão. São variadas características geométricas dos tubos e das ferramentas e o estado do material (diferentes tratamentos térmicos).

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to enhance methane control and mine ventilation practices at coal mines, as a method to mitigate hazardous work conditions. NIOSH researchers conducted case studies to investigate the effectiveness of existing systems and improve performance to decrease the potential for unplanned or excessive methane emissions. At one mine, drainage was influenced by hydrofracking inefficiencies where two of the six wells showed good frack development. Methane content was variable, from 300 ft3/t to 600 ft3/t. This paper also summarizes overburden movement during undermining and the estimated quantities of gas transported to the mine using FLAC3D and CFD modeling. The findings from this research effort highlight considerations based on specific mine conditions that may also be applicable to most longwall mines utilizing methane control systems.

Xstrata Copper is extending the Ernest Henry Mine with a 6 Mtpa sub-level cave (SLC) mine being constructed under the pit. The SLC mine will maintain the EHM operation until 2024 after the pit is completed in August 2011. In February 2008, the first cut of the new underground mine at EHM was fired with the start of an exploration decline. Since then Xstrata Copper has continued the development and construction of a SLC mine. During this process a number of challenges arose, some of which had not been anticipated in the planning stages, that in turn has been addressed to ensure the development continued. The challenges have been many and varied and range from setting up the portal area and commencing the exploration decline development in an active large open pit, to management of underground water. Further challenges were presented by the effects of the GFC on investment recommendations, with the scale of the mine varying from a shaft mine to a smaller scale trucking only mine in mid-2009 and back to the full shaft mine in late 2009. The effect was the parallel development of two separate mining scenarios, with the challenge of maintaining commonality for as long as possible to keep both options alive until the final board approval was obtained. In 2010 the RSPT caused further impacts. This paper will describe the current progress of mine development as well as how the various challenges have been met and some key lessons learnt from these experiences.

This paper summarises the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a rib support design methodology and software tool that could be utilised by suitably qualified colliery staff. The project was primarily funded by Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and further supported by several Australian longwall operations. The outcome of the project is a design methodology and software tool called, Analysis and Design of Rib Support (ADRS). ADRS is an empirical technique, which recognises that several geotechnical and design factors affect ribline performance and in addition that operational and safety issues essentially dictate the level of performance required. Therefore, the design recommendations associated with ADRS are specific to the Australian coal industry; however the procedure(s) for data collection and analysis could be applied to other countries' 'underground coal industries. Case history data were compiled from 34 longwall and two bord and pillar operations resulting in 204 case histories with each case history data set being defined by approximately 130 individual data fields. In addition monitoring (incorporating stress cells and extensometers) was undertaken at 10 collieries to assess and quantify the effectiveness of different rib support patterns and hardware on rib performance. The monitoring sites allowed for an improved understanding of the mechanisms of rib failure and degradation in terms of its interaction with the installed support and at the various stages of the mining cycle. The design methodology deals with both mains development and gateroad development specific to Australian longwall mines. This paper focuses on longwall gateroads subjected to abutment loading and in particular the travel road which becomes the tailgate of the subsequent panel. The statistical analyses associated with these cases suggested that the level of rib support should be based primarily on the development height and the pillar stress level. The ADRS software guides users through the design process, allowing them to develop rib support plans based on sound science and a broad base of in-mine experience To the best of the authors’ knowledge ADRS is the first systematic rib support design technique to be developed for any country’s underground coal industry. The development and use of empirical models in mining have substantially contributed to improving safety and productivity. ADRS further demonstrates that empirical techniques are particularly relevant and beneficial in dealing with the complexities of geotechnical design associated with underground coal mining.

"Pyritic massive sulphide deposits lie conformably above submarine volcanic rocks, and beneath siliceous and manganiferous iron formations. The massive bodies are often zoned, with a barren pyritic top grading downward into pyrite with sphalerite, and occasionally galena, and a chalcopyrite-rich base. They are frequently brecciated, like the lavas beneath them, which contain pyrite and chalcopyrite as coatings on joints and fractures and as dispersed grains. The lavas also exhibit propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. These sulphide deposits appear to have formed on sea bottom from fluids escaping through the lavas during periods of exhalative and sometimes explosive volcanism. The process may be comparable to the present deposition of base metals from hot brines in the Red Sea. Some porphyry copper deposits resemble the altered, sulphide-impregnated lavas which lie beneath bodies of pyritic massive sulphide. In porphyry copper deposits, pyrite and chalcopyrite occur as veinlets and dispersed grains in intensely fractured tuffs, flows, sub-volcanic intrusions or other host rocks, characterized by propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. Metal zoning is present; sphalerite and galena often occur in manganiferous veins peripheral to a shell of pyritic veinlets which encloses the mineable zone of chalcopyrite-bearing veinlets. This sulphide distribution appears to have formed from hydrothermal fluids escaping, either passively or violently, from solidifying magma. The fluids may be comparable to hot brines encountered by drilling in the Salton Sea area of California.There are also important differences between massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits. The former usually occur in differentiated, mafic-to-felsic subaqueous volcanic rocks, whereas porphyry copper deposits are often associated with shallow plutons and subaerial volcanic rocks of intermediate to felsic composition. Calcic-sodic metasomatism accompanies the massive sulphides, whereas potassic metasomatism characterizes the porphyry cop.per deposits. Further, ages of massive sulphides range from Archean (Keewatin) to Tertiary, but porphyry coppers are Triassic to Tertiary in age. These similarities and differences suggest that massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits are related tectonically and metallogenetically. The former were generated during early stages of crustal evolution, particularly in Archean time, and were repeatedly derived during early stages of younger, individual tectonic cycles. In contrast, the porphyry coppers developed during the later stages of crustal evolution - later in terms of both absolute age and relative age within younger individual tectonic cycles. They appear in younger rocks generally, and specifically in rocks involved in events of the middle and late tectonic stages of orogenic belts. The massive sulphide deposits are of early-magmatic eugeosynclinal affiliation, whereas the porphyry deposits formed in late-magmatic, predominantly subvolcanic settings at the edge of continental plates, where contemporaneous exhalative volcanism was mainly a subaerial phenomenon. Transitional types of deposits exist and are found on continental margins with flanking eugeosynclinal sequences."

The mesothermal quartz-scheelite lodes of the Wakamarina valley are one of twelve known mined or prospected gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Recorded production was 556 kg gold, a little silver, and c. 390 t scheelite. 134 m of the 1800 m long Golden Bar reef are accessible in the No 2 level of the Golden Bar mine. The reef is a typical multi-banded mesothermal vein, mostly c. 1.75 m wide, enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. Scheelite is sparsely distributed, and is more common in small veinlets in the hanging wall schist. The country rocks are textural zone I-1m schists of prehnite-pumpellyite to pumpellyite-actinolite metamorphic facies. Their geochemistry suggests they are part of the Caples Terrane, and of calc-alkaline volcanogenic arc origin. The associated Wakamarina Quartzite is strongly recumbent folded, and of the same metamorphic grade, with abundant pumpellyite, stilpnomelane, and garnet, presumably spessartine. Although it has geochemical signatures of a deep sea sediment, it is depleted in Cr and Cu, and greatly enhanced in K and Ti, when compared with a standard chert. It also has trace element characteristics of a calc-alkaline arc-related sediment. However, associated greenschist has MORB-like incompatible element chemistry. The Golden Bar reef lies within a steeply dipping, normal to transtensional dip-slip fault adjacent to a shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone, which, at least on the footwall side, is 040 m wide. The shear foliation has been severely dragged down to nearly parallel the Golden Bar reef within 1 m of the quartz lode. Preliminary structural analysis suggests that the shear zone is extensional. X-ray diffraction analyses of the wall rocks show a progressive depletion of amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite towards the reef, and enhanced illite/muscovite and Kfeldspar adjacent to the lode, along with possible graphitic carbon within 10m. Two zones of intense quartz veining occur, one adjacent to the hanging wall for 12 m and one from 40 m outwards. Quartz vein systems in the country rock are complex and span from pre-schistosity to post-mylonite. They include multiple generations of quartz, actinolite, stilpnomelane, pumpellyite, albite, adularia, chlorites, illite/muscovite, calcite, and scheelite. Metal analyses across the Golden Bar reef showed gold values of 0.13.1 ppm, and low tungsten values, consistent with the observed sporadic scheelite occurrences. As and Sb are at background levels, but enhanced Cr (150 - 430 ppm) relative to the schists (30 - 41 ppm) suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic to ultramafic rocks.

The tracking of ore through process hold-ups such as stockpiles has been traditionally been difficult to achieve. The inability to pinpoint the exact source in the mine of material that is feeding a processing plant has led to inefficient mine-mill reconciliation processes. In addition, a lack of understanding of the behaviour of ore in process hold-ups such as bins and stockpiles often leads to poor predictions of plant performance and to poor reconciliation of this to the orebody.This paper reports on two short case studies. One case study addresses tracking ore from various parts of two mines to the concentrator. The other follows synthetic particles through the coarse ore stockpile. Both studies use radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracer technology. The paper concludes by discussing general strategies for implementation of such concepts into mine-mill metal accounting and reconciliation systems. As shown in this paper, reliable ore tracking systems will allow much more effective mine-mill reconciliations as well as the ability to model process hold-ups with regard to size by residence time distributions. This should, in turn, allow metallurgists to have a better understanding of the size and grade of material that will report to the plant at different process hold-up (eg stockpile) conditions.

"Compagnie Miniere Esperance operates a gold primary ore body. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity concentration generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analyses of the tailings proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment.As lab tests proved the technical feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation, an on-site pilot operation has been carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for the industrial circuit sizing.Data collected during the pilot campaign have been used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM™ PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain a good fine gold recovery in a small amount of concentrate. A preliminary capital cost has been achieved to assess the flotation workshop profitability.INTRODUCTIONCompagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity separation in two stages: a top plant and a bottom plant. A “coarse” pond contains tailings of the top plant; this product feeds the bottom plant. Tailings of the bottom plant are stored in the “fine” pond.Analyses of the fine ponds proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment. However, direct cyanidation would require a too large installation, regarding the local conditions (accessibility, supplying and meteorological conditions).It has been then decided to test the feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation. Lab tests have been carried out by SGS Lakefield (Canada) in March 2007, which proves the technical feasibility."

Roof and rib falls are the basic ground control hazards associated with underground roadways during development, stand up and, if applicable, retreat. Falls of ground can happen following the deterioration of supports or rock conditions over time, and particularly as a consequence of continuing rock deformation and/ or failure to install adequate support. Once developed, the risk of a failure is increased due to the effects of time as well as to front abutment stresses through retreat mining. The measurement of strata displacement using monitoring equipment is a form of ground control risk assessment. These monitoring systems are active, or ?live?, in a sense that risk is assessed real-time. However, there are circumstances in which falls of ground can occur without the prior recording of excessive movement. In addition, monitoring equipment is typically placed at set intervals, and strata conditions could vary between these points. Consequently, a visual assessment of other factors contributing to the risk of a fall should be made in order to complete a ground control risk assessment. Such surveys are usually one-off, thus capturing roadway conditions at one particular point in time. Ongoing deterioration is not documented through such one-time surveys, and there is a requirement for real-time or live assessment where a system is in place so that observation data can be updated on an ongoing basis, and a useful summary of prevailing roadway states produced on demand. To address the shortfalls of one-time assessments, a ?live? computerbased quantitative ground control risk assessment process has been developed. It combines visual observations processed in a quantitative manner with existing monitoring data into an interpretable output which indicates zones of roadway where there is an increased risk of a fall of ground from the roof or sides, so that remedial action can be carried out to mitigate that risk. Through improved procedures, it is now possible to generate a ground control risk assessment for each roadway, and one which can be updated frequently. This paper aims to outline and describe the assessment process.

The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1951 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: Oil from Coal. R. I. 4865, Part I - R. I. 4866, Part II - Oil from Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1951 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

It is felt that the publication of this information will be of interest and value to the mining industry at large and especially to operators whose mining conditions are similar to those described. The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (Ministry) recently completed a slope stabilization project at Ten Mile Slide on Highway 99. The highway is an essential part of the road network connecting the British Columbia (BC) coast with the interior of the province. The landslide was first identified in the mid-1980s and has retrogressed more than 250 m upslope since then, leading to continual and expensive repairs to the highway. The Ministry engaged BGC Engineering Ltd. (BGC) and their structural sub-consultant Gygax Engineering Associates Ltd. (GEA) to develop a stabilization scheme that would halt the slide with an acceptable level of residual risk. The design required careful consideration of construction stages and the stresses induced in the structural components as the slide movement was progressively stopped as construction advanced. Four stabilization design options were shortlisted with the preferred option selected in Fall 2016. The selected solution comprised the construction of five rows of post-tensioned soil anchors upslope of the highway and a tied-back concrete tangent pile retaining wall for the roadway itself as well as reconstruction of the highway alignment, grade and drainage through the slide. Works were installed by top-down construction within defined time allowances stipulated in the contract. Significant engineering was undertaken beyond standard design processes for this complex project, such as comprehensive geotechnical investigations, aerial and terrestrial laser scanning and change detection analyses, pre-production test anchors, detailed geo-structural numerical modelling and due diligence activities to validate and optimize the design. The stabilization works have been very successful with the slide response being as predicted and the highway operating again as full two-lane service.

To solve the problem of large deformation of deep soft rock roadway, taking the soft rock roadway of no. 1 coal mine in New Shanghai as an engineering example, the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock of deep soft rock roadway is analyzed by combining theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field test, and the control countermeasures centering on deep and shallow dense drilling are put forward. Through theoretical derivation, based on the masonry beam theory, surrounding rock structure S-R stability principle and composite beam principle, the length, angle, and spacing of deep and shallow dense drilling are determined. Through numerical simulation, the deformation evolution process of soft rock roadway surrounding rock after dense drilling pressure relief is reproduced, and the influence of drilling parameters (drilling spacing, dip angle) on pressure relief effect is analyzed and compared. The field application test and monitoring verify that the deformation control measures of deep and shallow dense drilling broken roof surrounding rock have a good effect of large deformation control of soft rock roadway, and provide a new support means for the safety and stability control of soft rock roadway.
